This February, people in Sheffield will be able to celebrate the Valentine’s period in style with Love Sheffield, a variety of events and activities planned for all the family. The love-themed action kicks off on Thursday 11 February with a Valentine’s farmers market in the Peace Gardens. On Friday 12 February, the Love Sheffield fair will arrive, and will stay in the city centre right through half term until Sunday 21 February. People visiting the fairground rides on Saturday 13 February will be given roses and chocolates.
Love is also in the air in the Winter Garden and Millennium Galleries, with a free Sonic Materialities performance on 12 February from 6.30pm to 10pm, and a Winter Garden Tea Dance on 13 February from 6.30pm to 8.30pm. Then to end the Valentine’s celebrations in true style, The Moor is holding a fashion show at the Plug on Wednesday 24 February. Cllr Colin Ross, Cabinet Member for Employment, Enterprise and Development, said: “Whether couples want to enjoy a romantic meal followed by a

LOCAL SLIMMING WORLD GROUP’S PUTS WEIGHT BEHIND CHARITY SLIMATHON Big-hearted slimmer’s from South Sheffield are putting their weight behind Slimming World’s annual sponsored slim to raise money for the NSPCC. And the members of the Lynne Riley’s team which consists of groups in Eckington Waterthorpe, Killamarsh ,Birley , Beighton, Hackenthorpe, Mosborough , Sheffield Woodhouse , Halfway and Swallownest are inviting anyone who wants to lose weight in 2010 to join them in their six-week sponsored slim. Over the coming weeks hundreds of thousands of Slimming World members across the UK will take part in the Slimathon, which has been held by the UK’s favourite slimming club for the past 12 years, and raise £££s as they lose lbs. Slimming World Consultant Lisa Aldred, who runs the Tuesday 5.00pm & 7.00pm Springwater Avenue Community Centre group in Hackenthorpe and Friday 10.00am & 12 noon Sheffield Cathedral town Centre group, says: “The event is open to everyone in our team and everyone in the UK for that matter, not just Slimming World members. The more people who take part in the Slimathon, the more money we can raise for the NSPCC and the healthier we help people in south Sheffield to be.” All of the money the slimmer’s raise will go to Slimming World’s very own charity SMILES (Slimmers Making It a Little Easier for Someone), which this year is supporting the NSPCC’s Child’s Voice Appeal. Last year the Slimathon made £72,000 and participants from Slimming World groups around the UK lost more than 400 stone. Lynne says: “The brilliant thing about the Slimathon is that as well as raising money for charity, it provides wonderful motivation for slimmer’s because with all their sponsors rooting for them they’re bound to be successful. We’d love everyone to join in, whether they want to lose a little or a lot of weight. Even if someone has just a few pounds to lose they could still make a huge difference – one member last year had only 10lbs to lose but she raised more than £250 – and others wanting to lose a larger amount of weight will get a superb kick-start to their weight loss journey. Mike Smith who runs the Tuesday Halfway Infant School group at 7pm commented “The great news is that over the six weeks slimmer’s can lose a stone or drop a clothes size or two. But even better than that is the fact they can do it without ever going hungry. At Slimming World our healthy eating plan encourages members to fill up on unlimited amounts of satisfying, low-fat foods like fruit and veg, pasta, rice, potatoes, lean meat, poultry and fish, as well as still enjoying occasional treats. We want people to know that this isn’t a charity fast, it’s a way to do your bit while also improving your health and happiness.” Anyone wanting to take part in the six-week Slimathon can do so any time during January, February and March. Pop along to the Eckington Slimming World group to pick up a sponsorship form and see what a friendly, inspiring and non-judgmental Slimming World group is really like. HOME OWNERS AGED 50+ Protect your home from future Care Home Fees
Does this sound familiar? “We have made our Wills leaving everything to each other then to the children”. These are known as ‘Mirror Wills’.
Sounds reassuring enough doesn’t it! But your children could in fact end up with very little or nothing at all. The main reason for this is your surviving spouse requiring residential care when you are no longer here to look after them. Although the possibility of care may seem a long way off, there are steps you should take now to protect your home.
Care Costs - If your surviving spouse has to go into care, they will have to use all their assets to pay for their care until they get down to their last £14,000. It is therefore not a good idea to leave your half share of the home in your will to your surviving partner. The answer is to make new Property Trust Wills. You may be unaware that legislation is already in place for you to take advantage of these types of Wills.

Wills’. Rather than leaving everything to each other, yourself and your spouse (or partner) leave your respective shares of your home to the children in Trust but say that they cannot have it whilst the surviving spouse / partner is still alive. This half would then NOT be included in any future means test calculations. The surviving spouse is free to sell their share of the home, raise cash or move house. Your children are powerless to intervene but simply have to wait for their inheritance, as they would have done under your old ‘Mirror Will’.

Do you qualify? Property Trust Wills must be written whilst you are both still alive and in good mental health. Unfortunately, these are unsuitable if you are single or a surviving spouse who now owns the property outright. It is therefore important for couples to act now.

ATLANTIC CROSSING! In the last couple of decades, the city of Glasgow has shone as one of the world’s most vibrant and diverse music scenes. Twin Atlantic – a young four-piece whose ambitious debut mini-album, Vivarium, is packed with enormous sweeping riffs, moods that flit from light to shade, and impassioned vocals dripping with gorgeous Scottish vowels (really!) – are powering out of that creative hub of a hometown to take on the world. The seeds of Twin Atlantic were sown when front man Sam McTrusty and bassist Ross McNae met at school, united by a love of music. Guitarist and cellist Barry McKenna came on board after driving the fledgling band around Scotland to tiny pub gigs. The final piece of the puzzle came in the shape of drummer Craig Kneale, who
had been in an earlier band with Ross. “It’s very incestuous scene, but everybody helps each other and it’s genuine,” explains Sam. “If you’re from Scotland you’re pretty much an underdog from the start because everything’s going on in London. I think it’s awesome that there’s loads of amazing music getting made in Glasgow.” Since those early days, they have evolved into one of the UK’s most exciting new rock bands, poppy melodies twisted with a metallic crunch and shades of prog experimentation. After an ambitious EP, A Guidance From Colour, and show-stopping support slots with alt-rock legends Smashing Pumpkins and like-minded American prog rockers Circa Survive, fans are already showing up at gigs with their logo and lyrics tattooed to their bodies. They’re far from an overnight success though - a lot of hard work has gone into this band. “Our practice space up until recently was Craig’s dining room,” says

Sam. “We’d be at his house at 12 and practice until half four, and then he would go to sleep for two hours, get up, go to work at B&Q all night, sleep for two hours, wake up and then practice. He did that for months. “ They’ve always been a creative bunch. Barry was classically trained at the prestigious Royal Academy in Glasgow and started his career touring with orchestras. Ross studied photography and oversees the band’s artwork, while Sam painted at art school, another experience that gave him the opportunity to develop the ideas whizzing around his head. Sam continues to paint – occasionally creating
one-of-a-kind merch pieces for fans to buy. In March 2009, Twin Atlantic headed over the ocean to the crazed streets of Austin, Texas to play four blistering shows at South by Southwest. Their American adventure took them to LA shortly afterwards to record ‘Vivarium’ with producer John Travis, who has worked with Kid Rock, Sugar Ray, Static X and Social Distortion. These Goth rockers from Finland have always been one of the best of this particular genre. They look as cool as they sound too, which isn’t always what happens with Finnish bands! Songs such as ‘Solitary Man’ (yes the Neil Diamond penned tune) ‘Sweet 666’ and ‘Wings Of A Butterfly’ are real stormers. But probably their best release and most famous is their stunning cover of Chris Isaak’s ‘Wicked Game’. A great song in its original form anyway, but HIM put the rock into it and did a stunning job. On a slightly different note, if you’re a lover of ‘Wicked Game’ I urge you to go online to www.myspace.com/edwardsno8rockclub; it’s an infamous rock club in Birmingham. On their Myspace player there is a version of Wicked Game done by a duo called Children Of Lilleth, you have to hear this version. It kind of dances the tune up a bit, but in the coolest way you’ll ever hear, you will not be disappointed. If that version got a proper release it would be massive I’m sure. Anyway, back to HIM. This is the first single form their latest album released next week called ‘Screamworks: Love In Theory and Practice’…………hmm, bit of a poncy title I think you’ll agree. But it’s the music that’s the important thing isn’t it. If you know HIM already, you won’t be shocked by this. It follows that staple gothic rock sound with soaring guitars and a melancholic vocal and overall feel. It can also uplift though and this song does both those things, as is the staple of HIM’s music. It’s a class tune, the guitars are fantastic and it’s not too Gothy to put off rockers or the general public I feel. Worth checking out.
The White Zombie frontman returns with his fourth solo album. His first was titled Hellbilly Delux, so this is Rob’s real follow-up to that huge album. Rob Zombie is one of THE biggest acts in rock and alternative clubs, his music is all over the horror film genre and songs such as ‘Dragula’ ‘Living Dead Girl’ and ‘More Human than Human’ are massive classics. He does rock how rock should be. Where HIM go more for passion and melancholy, Rob just shoves it in your face and grabs you by the balls. ‘What’ is a great track that sums up the whole album really well. Thundering guitars, great riffs and the extra thing that most rock bands can’t do and that’s a really catchy glam rock lyrical melody. You only have to hear this once and it’ll be in your head forever. A brilliant song! This album is full of these kind of songs, some have that Alice Cooper feel to them which is no bad thing. The imagery of a bloody Catweazle will not be to everyone’s taste, it can look a tad daft, but the music more than makes up for it. Great rock music. His involvement in movie making has seen him do Halloween 2 recently and his next venture is a re-make of The Blob…………..I can’t wait!

So they’ve done the Vanilla Ice version, which has always been seen as a ridiculous version anyway. They might as well have re-done the Birdie Song for all this is worth. It is absolutely shocking! No matter what music is released in the next 10 years, this will be the worse song of the decade.

Students at school were asked to write about the harmful environmental effects of oil on fish. One 11-year old wrote, “When my mom opened a tin of sardines last night it was full of oil and all the sardines were dead.”
Men and women One day, there was a catastrophic event which caused all living creatures on earth to die. To sort things out, everyone went to heaven. God approaches and says, ‘I want the men to make two lines. One line for the men who ruled their women on earth and the other line for the men who were ruled by their women. Also, I want all the women to go with St. Peter.’ With that said and done, the next time God looked, the women were gone and there were two lines. The line of men who were ruled by their women was 1000 miles long, and in the line of men who ruled their women, there was only one man. God became angry and said, ‘You men should be ashamed of yourselves. I created you in my image and you were all whipped by your mates. Look at the only one of my sons who stood up and made me proud. Learn from him! Tell them, my son, how did you manage to be the only one in this line?’ The man replied, ‘I don’t know, my wife told me to stand here.’
I am a great believer in being responsible and accountable for what we do or do not do in our lives and on Friday afternoon, I spent four hours at a speed awareness course which was offered to me as an alternative to a fixed penalty and three points on my driving license. As South Yorkshire Police have a policy of education being preferable to punishment and many readers will therefore one day have to attend such a course, I feel it will be useful to use this column to acquaint all drivers about what is in store should they transgress. The fee is seventy one pounds, which is not much different to the fixed penalty. I was first to arrive at the venue at Catcliffe, and therefore made my acquaintance with Karl, the lecturer, if that is the right word, before the other fourteen speeders arrived. He was quick to tell me that he was not a policeman, but a self employed examiner who had been involved in this aspect of driving for many years. He entrusted me with a bag full of tokens for the drinks machine, and I took up my position at a table just inside the door, and as each racer arrived, I issued them with a token and enquired how fast they were travelling when they were caught speeding. I therefore gave the impression that I was in charge; much to the amusement of the chap who followed me in who knew that I was just another offender. I have to confess that I went
thinking that it would be a waste of time and was just a means to escape the three points on my license, but having joined in some lively debate and seen some videos and awareness pictures, I emerged a better driver and will certainly monitor my speed in future. Our lecturer, Karl, did a sterling job whilst at the same time coming across as very friendly and not at all condemnatory. Russ Dennett, do I never stop writing about this musical genius, held his first Tuesday open night at the White Swan Dronfield and it was fabulous entertainment. It was a joy to see performances by local lass Diana and George from Scotland who are members of top Abba tribute band Bjorn Again. They absolutely oozed class, and returned to the Swan from a gig in Moscow. This exemplifies the pulling power of Russ Dennett. The usual contributors were all in attendance, notably new band The Score, where lead vocalist Hayley came to my notice by mistakenly (I think) picked up a pint of lager belonging to a friend of mine. She soon realised her mistake when she discovered the lack of lime. Just kidding Hayley, I would trust you with my life. It was also good to see Niall Howard back with us after his winter hibernation. I have been asked to organise a charity concert to benefit the Dronfield Mayor’s Charity Appeal which will take place in
a couple of months at Hilltop Club on a Wednesday night. I have a good nucleus of big hearted acts that have never let me down previously and so I shall be making a few begging requests shortly. These events are always a joy, as the quality of those who appear is superb, and the social ambience on these one off evenings are a joy to behold. What a transformation we are seeing at Hillsborough. Alan Irvine has been in charge for three games, and Sheffield Wednesday have won all three, following a long losing run. Is this the man to lead us out of the wilderness and into our rightful place amongst soccer’s elite? I seriously think so, and the fickle fans from Sheffield 2 must be green with envy. It will however give them a chance to see Real Madrid and Inter Milan in Sheffield, albeit at Hillsborough, something I imagine beyond their wildest dreams. I have been watching Celebrity Big Brother with interest to witness the combative rivalry between Mr. Katie Price, Alex Reid and Dane Bowers, who used to be Mr Jordan. Throw soccer nutter, turned Hollywood superstar, Vinnie Jones into the equation, and there is the recipe for a real proper punch up. I suspect, however, that they are all talking horses and it would be like handbags at dawn.

JOHN REILLY IS BETTER THAN EVER In May 2001 I played my first gig with Big Business at the Ritz ballroom Brighouse. My family and friends were there however had I not been playing there I would have been at the Cutlers Hall for a black tie function. The next day I saw a good friend of mine and exchanging pleasantries, as you do, he asked me about the gig the previous evening. It soon became apparent that he wasn’t all that interested in my answer as he was impatient to tell me about his evening.
The reason for his extreme enthusiasm was, he told me, that he had seen a band and that they were the best band he had seen in 20 years. He informed me that the drummer, bass player, guitarist, sax player and electric violinist were extraordinary musicians and the music they played was fantastic. He also told me that the singer had the best voice he had, possibly, ever heard. The name of the band was the Acoustic Angels and the name of the singer was John Reilly. I couldn’t understand
why I hadn’t heard of them, especially as the guitarist was my lifelong friend Cary Bayliss. Cary and I had played in Jimmy James and the Vagabonds together and he had also been a member of the original Big Business back in the late 70s. Cary is a fantastic guitarist and I knew that if he was in the band it would be very good indeed. I determined to find out more about the band and when I saw them I was blown away. It would be no exaggeration to say that there wasn’t a

ALPHABEAT INTERVIEW Denmark’s finest, Alphabeat, have revived the eighties with their quirky image and retro melodic pop which has excited music lovers world wide. After their début album ‘This is Alphabeat’ was released in 2008, the six piece have thrilled us Brits at several music festivals, including a show - stopping performance at T in the Park. Mercury caught up with Anders SG, male vocalist of the ‘wonky pop’ group, to ask about the hugely anticipated new album ‘The Spell’ and what 2010 has in store for Alphabeat. Rumours had been circulating fan-sites regarding the release date of the bands second album, which has now been confirmed as 1st March. This was previously set to have been 2nd November 2009. ‘We finished the album, but kept on writing... we couldn’t stop. We got some songs down we really liked and just had to beg the label (Polydor) to put them on the album.’

Whether it is just my impression may be up for debate but there really is a buzz around the Mercury at the moment as we work with other organisations. BBC Radio Sheffield is doing a great job helping to raise money for this appeal and speaking with Jimmy Carol today you can feel that his energy and enthusiasm will go a long way to making this a night to remember.

At this stage I didn’t really know John Reilly and while I had heard of Boy on a Dolphin I wasn’t really familiar with their work. I soon made efforts to listen to them. Again it was hard to believe that a band of such quality writing great songs wasn’t known by everyone. I saw them at The Boardwalk and then at a packed City
which was unfortunate. When the band had set up they had the usual sound check and even this was great to listen to and then John stayed on stage for 10 minutes tuning his guitar and running through a couple of numbers on his own. EVICTION My landlord has threatened to evict me, what can I do? If your landlord wants to evict you, they have to follow a strict legal procedure. They cannot simply turn you out onto the street without following these procedures. The process involved will depend on what type of tenancy agreement you have. This is not limited only to private landlords and tenants; it also applies to Councils and Housing Associations. In order to legally evict you your landlord has to first obtain a Court Order for possession and then a warrant for eviction. If the correct procedures are not followed the eviction may be unlawful. If you have been threatened with eviction a specialist housing solicitor can assess your situation and try to help you to resolve the problem before you are evicted. At any stage during this process they can give you advice and also represent you in court proceedings if required. What if I am evicted unlawfully? Unlawful eviction is when your landlord or their agent forces you to leave the property without following the correct legal procedures. Unlawful eviction could result if: • You are locked out of your home or the locks have been changed • You are physically removed from your home • You are prevented from entering part of your home If you have already been unlawfully evicted your landlord may have committed both a criminal offence
and a civil offence and we may be able to help you to mount a civil claim for compensation or re-instatement into the property. What if my landlord is using harassment tactics to drive me out? Harassment is when your landlord or their agent interferes with your legal rights in the accommodation, including the right to quiet enjoyment. Examples of this may include: • Cutting off essential services such as water, electricity or gas • Entering your home without notice • Threatening to make you leave • Refusing to do essential repairs • Frequent unannounced visits, especially at night If you are being harassed in this way contact us to speak to a specialist housing solicitor. Rotherham United quickly overcame the disappointment of Tuesday night with a 2-1 victory over Grimsby Town. Adam Le Fondre’s two first half goals were enough for the Millers who dominated much of the match. Wes Fletcher’s consolation was the only blackspot on an otherwise excellent performance. Ronnie Moore made three changes to the side that were beaten midweek, with Tom Pope, Micky Cummins and new loan signing Gavin Gunning all given starts. The new faces all looked eager to impress, and Pope particularly appeared to be revelling in his starting role. His cross in the first minute was almost turned in by the outstretching Le Fondre, and on five minutes he received Cummins’ header in midfield, but dragged his shot wide from twenty yards. On eight minutes the breakthrough finally came, and Pope was again the thick of the action. Gary Roberts won the ball in midfield and played a ball into Pope. His clever flick found Cummins whose through ball was perfect for Le Fondre to control and slide past goalkeeper Nick Colgan. The game began to die down following the goal, as Grimsby searched for a leveller, but despite much of the possession, they were unable to create anything clear-cut, and were limited to shots from distance. the right with a searching ball, and his cross was just too high for Pope who couldn’t get his header on target. The game soon fizzed back into life, and the Millers pressed for a second. Pope picked Marc Joseph’s ball out of the air and played a ball inside. Roberts slid a first touch pass into the path of Le Fondre, but his shot was deflected for a corner, despite the shouts of handball from the Millers players. On 36 minutes Nicky Law broke down the right hand side, and with attacking options charging into the box, his cross was cut out at the near post. From the resulting corner, Cummins’ header was saved before Le Fondre pounced on the line to poach his second of the game, and give the home side a deserved 2-0 lead going into the break. Kevin Ellison’s cross after getting the better of Peter Bore was the only action of a slow start to the second-half as the Millers continued to hold control of the game. On 66 minutes Bore’s miss-hit clearance only reached Ellison who played in Le Fondre, but his shot was high and wide from just inside the area. At the other end, Peter Sweeney’s shot from just outside the area trickled wide of Andy Warrington’s goal before Pope missed the chance to put the Millers 3-0 up. Le Fondre took control of Joseph’s ball and found the onrushing Law who found Pope 12 yards out. The striker took a touch before wriggling through two challenges, and scooping the ball wide from the edge of the six yard box. The Millers had a second penalty shout on 80 minutes as Roberts was sent tumbling in

the area as he looked to latch onto Law’s cross. Two minutes later and Law again turned provider, as he picked the ball up in his own half and bursting forward riding the challenges before feeding Le Fondre on the left, he cut infield and opened up his body, but Colgan was equal to his effort pulling off a fine one-handed save. Three minutes of added time were indicated, and when substitute Wes Fletcher latched onto Adam Proudlock’s through ball and slid the ball past Warrington, it left a nail biting finish in prospect. Marcus Marshall was introduced for his debut in place of the impressive Pope, and the Millers were able to hold on, and move to within three points of the automatic promotion places. “Embarrassing” and “Inexcusable” Says Matsos On Sunday the Sheffield Steelers slumped to their 10th home defeat this weekend to the Hull Stingrays, leading Head Coach Dave Matsos to promise the fans that changes would be made to the Steelers’ line-up after what he described in a post-game press release as the most embarrassing performance he had witnessed as Head Coach of the club. “It was just plain and simply embarrassing,” said Matsos after the game, “it’s inexcusable and it won’t continue because we will change the team.” The week’s games started off with a win, as the Steelers beat the Edinburgh Capitals at the arena on Thursday evening. With back-up netminder Dan Green in net Steelers fans were delighted as the team cruised to a 3-0 lead. Robert Farmer opened the scoring with his first league goal for the Steelers before Matt Hubbauer scored at 8:41 to double their lead. Farmer added his second goal of the night and the season, and the Steelers went into the second period with a comfortable lead. Unfortunately they got a little too comfortable, and with less than four minutes gone of the second period the Capitals pulled a goal back as Simon Lambert netted during a five-onthree powerplay. Their comeback continued when Owen Fussey scored at 33:27, and another powerplay goal from Scott McKenzie tied the scores at the start of the third period. With a little over ten minutes left in the game, Mark Garside put the Capitals 4-3. Less than a minute later, however, Jason Hewitt tied the game, and in
the last two minutes Doug Sheppard scored a short handed goal and, following a time-out for Edinbugh, Joey Talbot put the Steelers 6-4 in front with an empty net goal. Following Thursday’s game the Steelers were presented with their bronze medals, won the week before in Grenoble as they placed third in the Continental Cup competition, the first British team to ever get that far. Andrew Verner was also awarded the honour of “Goalie of the Tournament”. New import Jonathan Zion was left waiting in the wings on Thursday as his kit was delayed in arriving in the UK, but on Saturday night he faced a baptism of fire with the Panthers v Steelers game at the NIC in Nottingham. Sadly it was the Steelers fans who left disappointed as the Panthers made it five wins out of five against the Steelers during the 2009-10 season. Kevin Bergin scored first for the home team, and it took until almost half-way through the second period before the Steelers made it onto the scoreboard with a powerplay goal from Randy Dagenais. The third period saw the Panthers add another four goals in twenty minutes. Cameron Mann, Corey Neilson and David Clarke (five-on-three powerplay goal) took the Panthers way ahead. Jonathan Zion scored his first goal for the Steelers at 57:12, but by then once again it was too little too late for the Steelers. Marc Levers added the final goal of the evening at 59:33 into the Steelers’ empty net and again the Steelers left the NIC empty-handed. Sunday’s game against the
Stingrays began with a Steelers goal, Kevin Bolibruck scoring with just 1:40 on the clock. Just over a minute later Adam Knight evened things up with a goal for Hull, but the Steelers took the lead again, this time through Jonathan Zion who fired home his first home goal for the Steelers. In the second period it all began to go wrong, as the Stingrays’ Curtis Huppe scored the only goal. The third period showed just how the mighty have fallen, as the defending league champions allowed the Stingrays to score three goals in just four shots on goal and Jason Silverthorn, Craig Mitchell and Sylvain Cloutier sent the ever-vocal Hull fans home even louder than they arrived. On Monday morning Steelers’ owner Bob Phillips issued a personal statement, acknowledging that “…We are certainly a club in crisis” and calling the current situation “…the most embarrassing position the Sheffield Steelers have found themselves in their 18 year history.” He promised conference calls with both Steelers’ GM Mike O’Connor and Head Coach Dave Matsos, and that changes were imminent. Sheffield Wednesday posted their third win from three games under new manager Alan Irvine as they continued their recent transformation. Marcus Tudgay’s brace put the Owls in the driving seat and although Jake Livermore bagged a consolation, it was too little too late for Peterborough, who remain rooted to the foot of the table. The win saw Wednesday climb another place and they head to Scunthorpe in midweek buoyed by maximum points since Irvine was appointed two weeks ago. Irvine made one change from the side that beat Blackpool in midweek, with Leon Clarke coming in for hamstring victim Jermaine Johnson up front. Clarke scored his third goal of the season at Bloomfield Road, a strike that nudged him ahead of loanee Luke Varney, who had to settle for a place on the bench following his return to Hillsborough for a third spell from Derby. The early exchanges unfolded in Peterborough’s half and the Owls almost took a deserved lead on seven minutes, with Clarke at the centre of the action. Michael Gray looped a high ball in from the left and the big striker pivoted to execute a powerful, low volley that Joe Lewis did well to save and gather at the second attempt. Posh continued on the back foot as Wednesday enjoyed the upper hand, with the only thing missing a more regular threat on the visitors’ goal in front of the Kop. Clarke was particularly lively, causing consistent problems for a Peterborough rearguard shorn of three regular defenders sidelined through injury and suspension. Darren Potter came close to breaking the deadlock when the midfielder struck a rasping drive from distance that rattled the crossbar with the aid of a deflection from Exodus Geohaghon. Peterborough responded in an instant and hit the woodwork themselves from their first meaningful attack; Reuben Reid’s header striking the bar following a rare Posh corner. Darren Purse brought the best out of Lewis with a firm header just before the inter-

val but the Owls did get their reward on 44 minutes when Gray’s resulting corner found Tudgay at the near post and his glanced header flew into the top corner. Rock bottom Posh had to show more enterprise in the second half to avoid being cut further adrift and they missed a decent opportunity just after the resumption. Scott Griffiths floated a free kick into the danger zone and Izale McLeod might have done better with a header that sailed wide. The Owls then had two shots cleared off the line in an amazing bout of action - first Clarke was unlucky after rounding the keeper before Gray suffered the same fate from the rebound. Purse glanced a header narrowly over following Gray’s dangerous free kick but Wednesday did double their lead on 67 minutes. Potter’s deep corner was moved on by Purse and Tudgay was on hand to bury a firm header past Lewis. Just as the Owls seemed to be heading out of sight, though, Peterborough grabbed a lifeline on 76 minutes after a brief flurry of chances. Lee Grant saved superbly from Griffiths but could do nothing to keep out Livermore’s drilled effort from 20 yards. Mark Cooper’s side pressed for an equaliser in the closing stages but the Owls formed a resolute backline to hang on to the lead and seal another welcome win. Irvine: Players deserve full credit Sheffield Wednesday manager Alan Irvine has lauded the players who have helped the new regime at Hillsborough unfold with a perfect start. The Owls’ 2-1 home win over Peterborough on Saturday was the third victory from three since Irvine took charge two weeks ago, coming hot on the heels of travelling triumphs at Barnsley and Blackpool. And Irvine has handed full credit to the Wednesday players for swiftly absorbing the methods and demands of the manager and his coaching staff. He said: “The players have been magnificent since I came into the club. They have listened to what we have to say and taken in what we have asked. And for that they deserve so much credit. “I would have been satisfied with five points from the first three games because they were all very tough tests. To get nine is just fantastic so well done to the lads. “But it’s absolutely vital that we stay 100 per cent focussed. We have just had a week that has seen us pick up points and move up the table. We need to remember that a bad week could see us go back to where we were.” Irvine was delighted to see Marcus Tudgay return to goalscoring form against Posh after a dry spell of 13 Championship games. Tudgay bagged a brace to seal victory and the manager heaped the praise on the former Derby man: “I’ve been getting round all the players with one-on-one meetings and I saw Marcus, who said that he’s been getting some criticism from people who thought he didn’t want to be here. “But he told me that nothing was further from the truth. He is totally committed to this football club and he has certainly shown that with his performances in the three games so far. All he wanted was a goal. “He has been fantastic, doing a lot of the work that maybe goes unnoticed but is crucial to the way we want to play the game. “I was really down for him when he hit the post against Blackpool, so now he has the two goals today, I am absolutely delighted for Marcus.” Meanwhile, Irvine has revealed that Jermaine Johnson could be facing a six-week spell on the sidelines.The Owls pace ace pulled up with a hamstring injury at Blackpool and may be missing until the latter part of next month. Irvine said: “It could be up to six weeks for JJ. There is no way of putting a completely accurate timescale on these kind of injuries, but it’s a tear and it could be six weeks.”

CUP DREAM OVER AS BLADES FALL TO BOLTON United’s FA Cup aspirations ended across the Pennines thanks to Bolton’s Scandinavian connections. Second half goals from Gretar Steinsson and Johan Elmander secured Bolton’s place in the fifth round draw and left United to concentrate on the Championship. More than 5,000 fans, which included 18 coach-loads, saw a battling Blades display but the Premiership side prevented a repeat of United’s FA Cup victory at the Reebok Stadium two years ago. Blackwell made three changes, one very late. Henderson and Camara were recalled with Cresswell and Evans dropping to the bench, whilst Seip was named on the teamsheet but at kick off it was clear that Fortune was partnering Morgan in the heart of the Blades defence. Despite having played Arsenal on Wednesday and a Premiership encounter with Burnley on the horizon, Bolton named a strong team, which included Sheffieldborn duo Davies and Cahill. Despite the fog closing in on the Reebok Stadium at kick-off it was clear to see that boss Blackwell had opted for a two-man attack. It almost paid off within 20 seconds as a shot from Camara was blocked by Knight and Williamson subsequently volleyed just wide. Camara also won a corner from Knight within three minutes as United began brightly, buoyed by the full away end. It would be unfair to say United were dominant early on but it took until the 18th minute before Bolton registered a chance. Klasnic’s pull-back gave Cohen the chance to shoot but Bunn saved and then gathered before Lee arrived. The opportunity was, however, the catalyst for

three more in the space of four minutes. Firstly, Montgomery threaded the ball through the defence to put Camara clear but the striker clipped over the crossbar with just Jaaskelainen to beat and then, for Bolton, Klasnic played in Samuel, but he wasted two shooting chances by trying to turn United’s defence inside out. The visitors hit straight back once again but after Knight had failed to deal with Taylor’s cross, Williamson and Henderson got in each other’s way. The closing stages of the first period were quiet - both on and off the pitch. Neither side could justifiably claim to be on top nor were there chances aplenty. On 32 minutes a cross from Quinn saw Morgan, under pressure at the back post, head wide, whilst for the home side the threats were coming from Lee on the right but both Klasnic and Cahill were able to convert their headers. The fog was still evident at the start of the second period but Montgomery was able to see and cut out a cross from Steinsson in the early moments. However, United did not heed the warning of the threat from Bolton’s right. With 48 minutes gone, Davies spotted STEINSSON’s burst down the right flank and the Icelandic full-back, faced with a crowded penalty area, shot at goal from an acute angle and managed to squeeze the ball under Bunn, into the far corner of the net. There was a quick chance for a second Bolton goal but Fortune and Taylor combined to block a shot from Cahill, whilst United attempted to hit back but longrange attempts from Henderson and Williamson barely troubled the home defence.
United, though, were the more offensive team in the middle section of the second period. Henderson’s deep cross looked destined for Camara before the slightest of touches from Knight and the introduction of both Ward and Cresswell for the final 15 minutes gave the travelling fans a lift. Ward dragged a shot wide after teaming up with Montgomery and Camara to open a hole in the Bolton defence and further fresh legs were introduced for the final ten minutes with Evans brought into the action. Steinnson returned to defensive duties to prevent Henderson getting on the end of Ward’s cross before, cruelly, the Blades were caught on the counter attack. With 85 minutes gone Fortune kept ELMANDER on side and the Swedish substitute fired into the same corner that his Scandinavian team-mate found earlier in the half. The remaining five minutes, plus four of injury-time, saw the Blades unable to seriously test Jaaskelainen. Cresswell was the first and only name to go in the book for a foul on Elmander but the final whistle signalled that United had failed to score for the first time in eight matches.

Two defensive errors cost the Blades the chance to earn a second crack at Bolton Wanderers and left Kevin Blackwell frustrated: Steinsson - early in the secondhalf - and Elmander - late - took advantage of the slips that created a two goal cushion the Blades manager didn’t think was deserved: “A lot of neutrals watching would not have been able to choose which team was in the Premiership but two pieces of sloppy defending made the difference. “You can’t give Premiership chances like that and not expect them to take them, but there was nothing in the game and overall I was pleased with our display. “We were forced into a change just before kick-off when Marcel Seip tore a hamstring in the last kick of the warm-up. “Jon Fortune came in, not really ready and not having played since the Barnsley match, but he did a terrific job and the lads coped with the changes. “One or two chances were passed up in the first-half and Bolton: Jaaskelainen, Samuel we could have gone in a couple (Basham 85), Cahill, Muamba, Knight, Davies (Riga 88), Stein- of goals to the good, but when we conceded early after the sson, Klasnic (Elmander 75), break we had to chase the game Ricketts, Cohen, Lee. and it probably disrupted us a Unused: Robinson, Al Habsi, little bit. A Fan’s Weekly Verdict Written by Jon Warburton
A Disappointing Meal To say the last week has given Blades fans food for thought would be a massive understatement. And unfortunately it has turned out to be a four course meal that though starting brightly, turned more distasteful as each course was served. The starter was lively and refreshing, as Sheffield United welcomed tricky winger Mark Yeates to the club just over a week ago. We can only hope that when everyone is fit, we will see well balanced wing play with Yeates and the diminutive ward attacking down the flanks. The fish course however, was one full of bones that are still stuck in the throats of many Blades fans. After proclaiming two weeks ago that Matt Kilgallon’s decision to commit himself to the Blades till the end of the season was one to be heralded, the young defender is of course, no longer a Sheffield United player. But just like a dining out is not ruined by one bad course, a footballing week can not be ruined by one bit of bad news. So on to the main course of Sheffield United’s week, and the FA cup tie at Bolton. I think this can be best described as a dish that on first sight did not look likely to impress, and though the first mouthful was a pleasant surprise, on completion it left you as disappointed as you had expected. A midfield four that largely consisted of defensive minded midfielders did little to inspire, and although there were flashes of creativity from Camara in the first half, we ultimately did not offer enough to deserve anything from the game. After these two disappointments we desperately needed a dessert to titillate the taste-buds and give us hope looking forward. Blackwell’s post match interview did no such thing. In response to questions regarding a replacement for Kilgallon he sounded suicidal, suggesting that he may not be allowed any money to replace him and we need ‘to wait and see’. I will try to have faith with five days left to the transfer deadline, because an adequate replacement will make or break our season. I’m not holding my breath.
