Just see how different these two statements ‘feel’. ‘I want to get that job’ or ‘I intend to get that job’. I am sure you will agree that the latter is a much ‘stronger’ statement. We have all experienced intention in action in our lives. Can you remember a time when you were successful because you refused to give in, or that you knew the direction you were heading was definitely right for you? Failure was never an option! Intention is put into action when you are absolutely sure you know what you want. It creates its magic when you have stopped the indecision and you have
well and truly made your mind up. It is evident then that the most powerful creative force in the universe is seriously inhibited by doubt and indecision. So, the first step to making a change in the right direction is to decide what you want. If we look at any of the major breakthroughs, discoveries and inventions that our species has known, we can clearly see intention at work. All the inventors, scientists and explorers were fuelled by an inner ‘knowing’. They all persevered, undeterred sure that what they searched for was possible. Never did they have the intention to prove that something didn’t exist or wasn’t possible.
The second major factor that effects the activation of intention is the ability to ‘imagine’ something that may not yet exist. Maybe you don’t know if the job you want actually exists but just thinking about what you want from your work will begin the process. Did you know that your brain sends out the same signals when thinking about something as well as doing it? It doesn’t distinguish between the two. That is why athletes do ‘dry runs’ of the courses they plan to run, in their mind; this improves their performance on the day of the event. It takes just 16 seconds for something to begin to manifest when you start thinking about it, whether it already exists or not. The more time you apply to it after that determines how quick the initial thought can become a solid object or situation. The creation process begins with a single thought or idea. Maybe the original notion is planted by the universe just at the right time or it is lying dormant in us from before birth waiting to be awakened at the right moment. Either way it only takes the one thought to start the process. The thought is given energy dependant on the amount of time it is used. It attracts other energies vibrating on the same or similar frequency depending on its strength and nature (e.g. how much time the creator has spent thinking about it and whether it is a positive or negative vibration). These other energies give the creator some kind of
feed back as to the possibility of a result (e.g. a similar experiment or breakthrough may become known to them or another creator offers a helping hand. You know what I mean a non-coincidence happens just at the right time). The creator fuelled by the recent confirmation that he/she is on the right track gives it a great deal of his/ her thinking time. He/she ‘imagines’ the outcome in different scenarios but he/she always ‘imagines’ success. Related feelings fuel and drive him/her. The energy around the thought is now so vast and the thought itself is so huge that it is now more of a ‘belief’. We base our beliefs on things that appear ‘real’ to us. That is, things we can see and hear or are told over and over again. (E.g. you believe that grass is green, but who says so? Someone, somewhere, in the beginning, made a decision that the colour of grass would be called green. You might think this is a silly thing to say but the point I’m trying to make is we can believe things to be true just because we’ve been told enough times that they are. After all it may be possible that when I see green it is different to what you see.) The vibration then matches the belief and it becomes a reality. Every possible matching vibration is attracted to it and the desired result is achieved. The thought or idea has become solid or we have fixed our attention on random subatomic particles and set them into the pattern we expected to achieve. Why not try to deliberately access the creative force of intention? What is your resolution again? Make a decision and apply as much energy through thought to it as you can. The process will be instigated, intention will be activated and if you imagine yourself there, before you know it you will get what you want. Don’t waste your ‘dry run’ thought time on thoughts like ‘things like this don’t happen to me’ or ‘I don’t deserve this’. The more you concentrate on something the bigger it gets, so only send out what you want to get back not what you don’t. Anything is possible and no one is exempt from the creative force of intention. You are limited only by your imagination!

So go on then what did you decide to do this year? Lose weight, quit smoking, change direction, get married, have a baby, make more money or just get happy? I suppose the next question is how’s it going? Have you started yet or have you given in yet? There’s something about January that makes us reevaluate and commence change, but sometimes by the beginning of February we have steered off track. The truth of the matter is every single moment can be the moment in which change commences. If there is anything missing in your life or there’s something you would change, it is evidence that you are out of synchronisation with the universe. We have the power and tools to re-align and to co-create all we desire into our lives. We can use our imagination to dream our goals and the laws of creation to make them a reality. I know we have talked about the laws of creation before but this is the perfect time to remind ourselves how to make our resolutions solid by using intention. Intention is the force of creation. We all use intention everyday, without even realising it. Primarily, we use intention when we are absolutely sure of what we want, when there are no grey areas. If you intend to do, or be, or have something, the universe gets a clear message that you really mean it and that you will participate, doing whatever you have to do, to achieve your goal. Intention is determination and some and can be triggered for anything from a trip to buy a new shirt to finding our soul mate.

BACK TO THE CHAIN REACTION! FUTURE! Future of the Left is an alternative rock band, which formed in 2006 in Cardiff, Wales. They consist of Andy “Falco” Falkous (vocals, guitar, keyboards), Kelson Mathias (bass, vocals) and Jack Eggelstone (drums). Falkous and Eggelstone are former members of mclusky and Mathias is a former member of Jarcrew. Welsh trio mclusky was one of the bright spots in the British indie scene’s post-Britpop hangover, forming in 1999 and releasing three appealingly noisy albums before splitting in January 2005. During the same period, Welsh electropunks Jarcrew released two albums before also splitting in early 2005, reportedly due to the drummer finding religion. While mclusky bassist Jon Chapple went off to form Shooting At Unarmed Men, the trio’s remaining members, singer/guitarist Andrew Falkous and drummer Jack Egglestone, hooked up with Jarcrew singer and keyboardist Kelson Mathias and bassist Hywel Evans. Evans soon left to start his own group, so with Mathias moving over to bass (and after experimenting with a variety of tongue-in-cheek names) the remaining trio debuted as Future Of The Left in autumn 2006. Remaining with mclusky’s label Too Pure, Future of the Left made their debut with the double A-side Fingers Become Thumbs / The Lord Hates A Coward in January 2007. Two more singles followed: adeadenemyalwayssmellsgood and Small Bones Small Bodies; and the album Curses was released in September 2007. Falkous’s trademark abrasive guitar riffs and vocals remained in evidence, but also added to the mix were keyboards: an old Roland synth plugged through a guitar amp in most cases, but also acoustic piano on album closer The Contrarian. Amidst constant touring, a stopgap live album last night I saved her from vampires was released in 2008. March 2009 saw a new single on 4AD, The Hope That House Built, and second studio album Travels With Myself And Another was released in June. The band hit the Sheffield streets with a gig at the Corp on the 23rd.
Zico Chain Are a rock band from London, United Kingdom, formed in 2002. To date, they have released one full album entitled Food and one self titled EP. The band opened the main stage at The Download Festival on 8th June 2007. They supported Velvet Revolver on their 2007 summer tour of the UK in support of their second album Libertad. Demos of songs for the second album have started to appear on the bands myspace. The band formed in East London. Vocalist-bassist Chris Glithero had moved there from Manchester, and met guitarist Paul Frost and drummer Ollie Middleton. Their dissatisfaction with 21st-century British rock helped them connect with one another. Influenced by such bands as Motörhead, Queens of the Stone Age, The White Stripes and System of a Down, they began recording, and soon were signed to Hassle Records. For their first EP, they worked with Teo Miller, who has previously worked with Placebo. They then toured with such bands as Nine Black Alps, Alkaline Trio, Cave In and The Fall of Troy. They had a number-one video on MTV2’s chart. Musician’s Slash and Duff called Zico Chain their favourite new band. In 2009, the band released the ‘These Birds Will Kill Us All’ EP, available on itunes among other Internet sites.

Not a great deal of chart music comes from France and never really has done apart from the odd crooner style track from the like of Charles Aznavour. ‘She’ springs to mind, you know the song that was crucified by Elvis Costello a few years back. Of course there’s the infamous J’etaime from the ‘60’s and then probably only Vanessa Paradis (now married to Johnny Depp) who had a big hit called ‘Taxi’ when she was about 14 years old, but also had a few more hits later in her career when she hooked up musically with the likes of Lenny Kravitz. In fact the majority of music played on French radio is still British and American music. So you can’t really be surprised that younger French artists are recording all their vocals in English. This review probably wouldn’t be happening if the song had been in French and that’s a shame. Anyhow, the Plastiscines are described as a four piece all female trash/glam kinda band. This song is directed at the Peaches Geldof sort of people it seems, the video really shows this off. Lots of snobby back-biting posh women throughout its storyline. But the song isn’t, for me, quite edgy enough. The band look more like the Bangles than a trash/glam four piece and their image is very clean. The French press describe them as “the spoilt kids of rich parents playing at being rock stars” which isn’t the vibe the band would want to get across I don’t think. I wish this would have been grittier and dirtier, but its polished feel makes you think the French press may have a point. Maybe this band is really just The Saturdays with guitars? Discuss…………….?
Talking of France, this duo has of course a French name, but they are English. This single did the rounds last year and lifted La Roux to new heights and into the British consciousness. Since then, the band has continued to get talked about and the record label have decided to re-release ‘In For The Kill’ a good move I think. I quite liked it the first time around, but it is growing on me more and more and I think it could be an even bigger hit this time around. It’s very electronic, a tad cheesy maybe? But it is basically a modern Erasure or Flock Of Seagulls, the haircut of which is likened to singer Elly Jackson……….to be honest it aint quite that ridiculous thank goodness. A very unknown fact…….her mother is Trudie Goodwin, who rose to fame playing June Ackland on long-running police series The Bill. How strange! I’m not sure why but it just feels odd. I digress, this song is catchier than herpes and its even easier to pass onto others in this digital age………….so beware!

At least one Frank Sinatra album should be in everyone’s music collection I believe and if I had to choose one it would be ‘Strangers In The Night’ It was basically a comeback album for him in ’66 and it featured a new kind of Frank and it oozed richness thanks to the Nelson Riddle orchestra. Go check this one out (at least).

Pub Goers Set to Benefit from Abolition of Land Agreements Exclusion Order

CAMRA, the Campaign for Real Ale, has welcomed the Government’s decision to revoke the Land Agreements Exclusion Order 2004. The consumer group has been campaigning for its revocation since last summer as part of its campaign to reform the beer tie to address a lack of competition in the pub sector in order to deliver a fair deal to the pub goer. Large pub operating companies, principally those with 500 or more pubs, will now need to work to prove that their beer tie agreements are fully compliant with competition law. Currently tied landlords are unable to buy beer from brewers of their own choice and are forced to pay prices inflated by around 50 pence a pint. The Government consultation response states that revocation of the Order will promote fairer and more open markets and a better deal for consumers through improved prices,
Mike Benner, Chief Executive, said: ‘This is very positive news for pub-goers, small brewers and struggling lessees. The Order is an anomaly which has for too long given legal cover to companies which are party to potentially anticompetitive agreements. The large pub owning companies will now have to review their existing beer tie arrangements in the full knowledge that they will be liable to severe penalties if it is subsequently proven that they have breached Competition Law.’ ‘CAMRA remains supportive of the beer tie model provided that it offers a fair share of benefits to consumers through greater choice, price competition and quality. We now urge the large pub owning companies to publicly commit to delivering on the basic principle that a tied tenant should be no worse off than they would be if free of tie.’

LIFE AFTER DEATH AND MORE BESIDES Regular readers of The Mercury will have seen the weekly column by Joanne Gregory, who is advertised as one of the UK’s most accurate and gifted mediums. There are very few subjects that raise more varied opinions as to whether there is a life after death. It is reasonably well documented that we all have a ‘God spot’ in the brain and as long as there have been records documenting human behaviour there have been references to faith and an afterlife. Humans are almost unique insomuch as they have a sense of self and again this is related to a belief that we have a soul. For as many people that believe there is an afterlife there are almost an equal number that believe there is nothing and perhaps the most forbidding of explanations I saw was in the BBC fictional drama ‘Torchwood’ when someone was revived from the dead. When asked if there was anything after death he said that it was absolute black and nothingness however there was something that “moved in the darkness”. One of the problems over the years has been that there have been all manner of cranks, fraudsters and weirdos that have claimed to be ‘gifted’ and sensationalist programmes such as ‘Most Haunted’ don’t always help. When I came back to The Mercury in July I was introduced to Joanne Gregory and while I found her to be
engaging and good company it would be fair to say that there didn’t appear to be anything out of the ordinary about her and neither did she appear unduly different in any way. In general conversation she would say certain things that made you think ‘where did she get that from?’ or ‘how the hell did she know that?’. There was definitely a sense of heightened perception and a certain insight however what she was saying was, sort of, general everyday stuff, however unless I had told her there was no way she could possibly have known. I was also aware that Joanne had a considerable following and also people that had seen her work or visited her for a ‘reading’ were absolutely convinced by her abilities. I’m a pragmatic open minded soul and I tend to deal in facts. Then it happened!! We had already agreed to promote an event jointly with Joanne at Club Baize on the 21st of January and she is also to appear at Wadsley Bridge WMC on Friday 12th March. I came up with an idea to arrange a very special event and we needed the appropriate venue to stage it. Having been brought up in Ecclesfield and also having been a chorister at St Mary’s Church I was quite familiar with Whitley Hall and some of the stories surrounding it. It’s not common knowledge but there is a Priory at the rear of Ecclesfield Church dating back to the 8th century and a
legend of a tunnel comnnecting it to Whitley Hall. We arranged a site visit with Joanne as she had expressed a concern that there may not be the level of ‘activity’ necessary to make such an event a success. Almost immediatey we walked into the building Joanne spoke to us of a young girl that was ‘bound’ to Whitley Hall and was walking around as though she was carrying out regular domestic duties. Speaking to the staff she amazed them speaking about the building and previous occupants as though she had intimate knowledge dating back at least 400 years. Everything that Joanne spoke about was confirmed by the staff including parts of the building where staff felt a presence or staff and guests had noted activity and in some cases actually seen something, or someone. Joanne could not have had previous knowledge of many of the subjects or ‘instances’ she was speaking about. This was all described in a very ‘matter of fact’ manner as though it was the most natural thing in the world, and to Joanne it is. On Friday 12th March I will be at Whitley Hall to see Joanne work and details are available from The Mercury. If you have spent time with Joanne and someone asks you the question is there life after death? I suspect you will find a degree of difficulty in accepting that, whatever your beliefs now, there must be.

FRESHLY SQUEEZED Hi Readers, Long time since I’ve done a write up but been ‘gigging’ with our own show. This weekend I had time off so went down to Ecclesfield Club to see a 2 girl duo called Freshly Squeezed. As soon as I walked in I was so pleased to see one of the girls as it was no other than the lovable little Sam. Now everybody knows Sam who used to be one half of the 2 Lyons comedy duo, what an artist this girl is, (but I’ll warn you that when Sam is on stage you’re not safe sat in your seat Ha! Ha!) a brilliant singer and entertainer. Now we get on to
Lee Freeman, resident at Plug’s Saturday night party Shuffle, was recently lucky enough to take part in a project at Seven Hills school in Sheffield. The course ran over 3 months and consisted of learning the basics of music structure and dj-ing, planning an event and promoting it. The culmination of the course was a 2 hour event in the Earth room at Plug on Thursday 17th December which turned out to be a huge success. Lee was involved with the course, in helping to teach the group how to beat match, tune selection, the technological aspects of DJing, along with imparting his considerable promoting wisdom too. This story is special as the group featured 12 incredible brave, bold and adventurous

She seemed a nice lass, they call her Kim. She started singing and dancing at the age of eight. At seventeen went to Cornwall and Devon singing and dancing, mostly holiday camps. Then she went in for Miss England and got through to the finals. (told you lads a=she was a stunner) - but sorry to disappoint you she has a partner. At twenty she joined a trio called Sweet Candy. They did most of their own work in America. When she came back she split from the due and went solo under the name of Kim Brodie. So I stopped to listen to their second spot. What a shock I got. They were so
good together as if they’d been together for years instead of just two years.. I’ve got to say readers if you want a really good night out of entertainment and comedy you’ve got to go and see these two lovely girls. They name they go at is Freshly Squeezed. They have got their own website telling you where they are. Just one last thing, Sam is now a Mum to a little daughter and she still worked on stage up until the final ninth month. She might be small but very tough. Congratulations to you and your family Sam.

too. The night we did was a real cracker too, teachers and pupils from the school came to Plug and we have a great party, with everyone having a go at mixing. I have been to many parties at Plug, all have been amazing but this one really felt like an achievement for everyone, I was so proud of the guys.” After the success of this first project, Lee and the guys at Plug have been asked to get involved on a yearly basis, something they are again very proud of.

A journey into the life of Eric Morecambe ‘Comedian of the Century’ At the Edinburgh Fringe 1997, while appearing together in Steve Martin’s Wasp, Guy Masterson casually commented, to his onstage son, Bob Golding, on his extraordinary likeness to a young Eric Morecambe’ for Bob was only 24 at the time. Now, 12 years later, in commemoration of 25 years since the great man’s untimely death, they are creating a theatrical celebration of Eric’s life. “Bob could have been born to play Eric.” says Masterson, who knows that one needs an extraordinary talent to do justice to Britain’s ‘Comedian of the Century’. “He has it all!” Masterson attests, “He’s an all-rounder. The slimming club was launched by Margaret Miles-Bramwell OBE in September 1969 when she was just 21. Margaret started out with just four groups in Derbyshire, where the company is still based. It now holds 6,000 groups every week and boasts a membership of 300,000 men, women and adolescents, making it the UK’s leading weight-loss organisation. VOICE OF THE NIGHTINGALE - ISSUE 21 This week we took in another service from the Rotherham Minster. This service was a special Songs of Praise style event which featured just a few readings and prayers along with plenty of favourite hymns. The service which was led by Canon David Bliss, the Vicar of Rotherham, was broadcast live on Sunday afternoon to the patients at the hospital. We were able create a link between the hospital chapel and the Minster too, with Reverend Hamish FergusonStuart, one of the chaplaincy team at the hospital, leading the prayers at the service. The Minster choir, led by Director of Music Phillip Higgins, performed a version of Psalm 23 to the tune made famous as the theme to the TV series The Vicar of Dibley. On Thursday this week we will have ice-hockey coverage as the Sheffield Steelers return to league action after a weekend of games in the Continental cup where they finished third. An unusual night for action at the Arena but our commentary team are all set to cover the game against Edingburgh Capitals with face-off at 7.30pm.
We started collections in the hospital foyer this week and a big thank-you to everyone who donated as they passed to help us raise £102.28 towards our ongoing costs. In association with the Foundation for Social Improvement we are looking for people to raise money for Radio Nightingale by taking part in Challenge 2010. The event is a sponsored walk or run over two distances, either 4km or 10km taking in the fantastic scenery of Derbyshire. The event takes place on Saturday 5 June 2010 finishing at Thornbridge Hall with a BBQ and drinks. There’s no entrance fee or minimum sponsorship level. Rotherham United are reducing prices for the upcoming game against Shrewsbury with Chairman Tony Stewart heralding the game as a chance to reward the Millers’ loyal fan base. Tickets for the match on Monday 22nd February have been reduced to £10 for adults and £5 for concessions, with the game also being broadcast live on Sky Sports. “With the Shrewsbury Town game, now set for Monday 22nd February, recently being confirmed as a live Sky TV fixture, and in the middle of a number of additional home fixtures, we are delighted to announce that tickets for this fixture will be just £10 for adults and £5 for concessions, Under 8’s will, as always, be free of charge,” said Mr. Stewart “We have quite a number of home fixtures on the horizon with all the rearranged postponed fixtures coming up and in the middle of them we now have a live Sky TV match to look forward to. This is a match where together we have a platform to show the nation just what progress Rotherham United Football Club are making, both on and off the pitch.” The game against Shrewsbury is one of three matches where the club will be releasing different offers. JASON TO STAY AT DALE Jason Taylor’s loan spell at Rochdale was finally officially confirmed this morning with the former Stockport man staying until the end of the season. The midfielder has spent two months on loan at Spotland since moving in November, and has impressed sufficiently to earn an extended stay with the Lancashire club. “I am enjoying it,” he told Rochdale’s official website. “Things have gone fantastically well for me since I arrived and I am very happy to have extended my loan.” Taylor signed for the Millers in January 2009 on a free transfer from Stockport County, having also represented Oldham in his early career.

Steelers Take Bronze in Continental Cup The Sheffield Steelers this the Steelers took on Yunost weekend became the first British team to ever bring home a medal from the Continental Cup Finals, after coming third in the competition and walking away with the bronze medal. Starting netminder Andrew Verner also took an extra honour - he was voted Goalie of the Tournament for the Continental Cup, with a save percentage of over 91%. The Steelers travelled to France for the finals weekend with a strong contingent of Sheffield fans, ready to keep up the noise for their team throughout the grueling schedule of three games in three days. Friday’s game saw the Steelers take on host team Grenoble. Goals from Jeff Legue and Jonathan Phillips put the Steelers 2-0 up during the first period. During the second period, in which, by Coach Dave Matsos’ own admission, the team “...fell apart.”, Grenoble levelled the scores with goals from Molin and Fleury. Young Brit Robert Farmer couldn’t have picked a better time to score his first goal for the Steelers, sending them into the third period in the lead. Andrew Verner began his quest for Goalie of the Tournament with some outstanding saves in the third period as Grenoble came out fighting to try and take the lead. The Steelers had other plans, however, as Matt Hubbauer added a goal and Jason Hewitt fired home and empty netter to complete the 5-2 victory. Red Bull Saltzburg were the
Steelers’ opponents on Saturday night, and they certainly had wings as they flew through to the Steelers goal with ease. Coach Dave Matsos took the team back to the hotel on Friday night for video reviews and to prepare for Saturday’s game. Saltzburg scored first at 3:40, but it looked as if the Steelers’ hard work was paying off when Matt Hubbauer scored a power play goal just 25 seconds later. However, that was to be the Steelers’ only goal of the game, as Saltzburg fired the puck home again and again, out-shooting the Steelers 24-9 by the end of the first period. Daniel Welser deflected a shot from Matthias Trattnig at 15:21, and within a couple of minutes Manuel Latusa added their third goal. Even a five-on-three powerplay could not be converted to a goal, and Saltzburg thought they had added their fourth goal minutes later when a shot from Michael Schiechl went under the body of Andrew Verner, who averted disaster, pulling off a stick save behind his back. Sadly just 14 seconds later the fourth goal did go in, Latusa managing to hit the back of the net. Saltzburg’s Welser and Schiechl added the fifth and sixth goals before the end of the second period, and the goal-less third period saw the Steelers give in to frustrations and take many penalties, some of which as a result of “different” refereeing on the continent, calling things that in the EIHL would not be called. With gold out of sight and the silver medal to play for,

Minsk were out of the running for the gold medal after losing their first game to Saltzburg on the Friday, however they still intended to give the Steelers a run for their money, and opened the scoring at 7:32. Verner was under fire again two minutes later as Sergei Yanovski headed for him on a breakaway, but failed to score. Despite the Steelers having the majority of possession and out-shooting Minsk 12-11 in the opening period they couldn’t find the back of the net, and Yunost’s plan of “patient play” paid off as they took advantage of the Steelers’ weariness. At the halfway point of the game Yunost scored their second goal as Alexei Baranov scored on his own rebound at 30:42, and just six minutes later a further two goals had been fired past Verner, Oleksandr Materukhin adding the third followed by the fourth from Alexander Borovkov. Matt Hubbauer added a consolation goal at 54:34, but there was no coming back for the Steelers, who had to wait until the final game of the tournament was over to find out if they had secured third place. Eventual champions Saltzburg beat Grenoble, and the Steelers claimed the Bronze medal. Wednesday got off to the perfect start under new manager Alan Irvine beating Barnsley 2-1 at Oakwell the first league win since October and the second away win of the season. The Owls struck first through Tommy Spurr but were promptly pegged back by Emil Hallfredsson’s equaliser. But Jermaine Johnson rammed home a piledriver to restore the visitors’ advantage Irvine rung the changes, with Lewis Buxton returning at right back while Johnson and Michael Gray both had places in the starting line-up after missing out against Crystal Palace in the FA Cup two weeks prior. Akpo Sodje took up a place on the bench having returned from his loan stint at Charlton. The game kicked off at a lively tempo and Wednesday, roared on by a 4,500-strong army of travelling fans, had the perfect start when Spurr blasted into the net from close range on three minutes following Gray’s corner. But that lead was quashed three minutes later when Hallfredsson’s deep cross from the left found its way, rather fortunately, over Lee Grant and in at the far post to level the score. In a game that was living up to its billing, the opening 15 minutes was proving to be a typical derby encounter with challenges flying in all over the field and plenty of end-toend action. But it was Barnsley who should have taken the lead when Darren Purse presented Daniel Bogdanovic with a golden chance. Purse’s header back towards goal near the halfway line was intercepted by the Maltese striker, who raced towards goal but Grant was out quickly to smother the danger. Wednesday dusted themselves down from that scare and nearly regained the lead moments later when James O’Connor hit the post with a fierce angled drive but the Owls did get that goal on 21 minutes. From Darren Potter’s free kick, Barnsley failed to clear their lines and, at the second time of trying, Potter’s punt forward was flicked on by Marcus Tudgay to Johnson, who thumped the ball high into the net. The hosts were looking likely to equalise as half time approached and came close when Adam Hammill’s corner picked out Stephen Foster,

who directed his header back across goal only for Potter to head off the line. The Reds came out of the blocks fast after the restart and were putting Wednesday under pressure but without any reward. Johnson continued to pose a threat to the Oakwell side in the second half and once again tested Luke Steele with a low strike to the right of the penalty box. In an attempt to shake things up just past the hour mark, Reds boss Mark Robins made a triple substitution introducing Jamal Campbell-Ryce, Iain Hume and Andy Gray With 15 minutes remaining and the game still in the balance, Johnson showed more menace as he danced around a number of challenges in Barnsley’s penalty area, but Nathan Doyle made a good challenge to deflect the Jamaican’s shot over for a corner. With time running out, Barnsley were throwing men forward into the box but were finding it hard to get that crucial break in front of goal - adding to the frustrations of the home crowd. As expected, the pressure continued in the late stages as Hume went close with a shot from a difficult angle - the ball landing on the roof of the net. Despite five minutes being added on for injuries, Wednesday held on for a hard-fought victory, a vital three points and a perfect start under Irvine. New Sheffield Wednesday manager Alan Irvine has urged his side to give more of the same when the Owls visit Blackpool on Tuesday. Irvine engineered a local derby triumph over Barnsley at Oakwell from his first game at the helm last Saturday as the Owls emerged with their recently damaged pride intact. SWFC would leave the bottom three behind with a point at Bloomfield Road and the manager insists that aim will only be achieved with the requisite amount of hard work and commitment. He said: “It was a hard game for us on Saturday and the players are going to have to do that again, again and again between now and the end of the season. The Championship is unforgiving, both in terms of tough how the games are and how many there are. “And Blackpool will be a big test. They are fantastic at home, with a record that is right up there with the best. Ian Holloway has done a terrific job, he has changed their style of play quite dramatically. “They play 4-3-3 and are very good at it. They play out from the back and through the middle of the park and put you under a lot of pressure. We will have to work every bit as hard on Tuesday as we did at the weekend and keep our shape all over the pitch.” Irvine gave the players every credit for the way in which they responded to the new coaching team’s ideas at Oakwell. As a result, it is likely to be a case of ‘as you were’ over the Pennines on Tuesday evening. He added:”I was delighted with the start, the lads tried very hard to do all the things we asked of them in the couple of days training that we had. But that’s all it is - a start. “The players deserve a huge amount of credit because it is different, there’s no doubt about that. Everyone has their own ideas and it was good to see the lads put them into place on Saturday. “So I certainly won’t make too many changes, because when I came in, I said to the lads, if they perform well, they will have a real chance of staying in the team. I’m not a great believer in rotation and I’m not sure that works properly in any case, so it will be a very similar team.”

Irvine: ‘This is only a start’ New manager, Alan Irvine was heartened by a resounding victory at Barnsley in his first match in charge. The Owls won 2-1 with goals from Tommy Spurr and Jermaine Johnson in the first half but Irvine stressed that there is plenty more work ahead. “It was an absolutely terrific performance from the lads, the application was good, but this is only a start,” the Owls boss said after the match. “If we think that’s it and everything is ok from now then we’ll end up having problems. The players have set the benchmark today in terms of the levels required to stay in this division and it’s up to us to make sure we don’t fall below those levels of commitment, determination and application. “The players have been excellent this week, they’ve worked very hard and they have been very receptive to what we want them to do. It hasn’t been easy to prepare because the weather conditions have meant that three out of five of our sessions have been indoors. The two training sessions we have done at Hillsborough have been key in getting things right for this match tactically. “We need points as soon as we can get them and today’s result is a great start in that respect. We need a lot of wins to confirm our Championship status and that is one of them but we need a lot more still.” Irvine stated that team shape had been key in securing a result and that organisation will be essential in getting the points on the board that the Owls need. “There was a focus on team shape during the week and the players took that on board very well. That gives us something to build on because if other things aren’t going well for you but you have the right shape then you will have a better chance getting the ball back and be able to use it and express yourself. “Jermaine Johnson was terrific today but he was just one in the whole team. He ran himself into the ground and by the end he was running on empty which is why I brought him off but Barnsley were also throwing all their big men forward towards the end and Akpo Sodje is a bigger player and better header of the ball than Jermaine so it made sense to put him on. “Jermaine played as a striker when Sheffield Wednesday came to Preston last season and he was certainly a threat so I had it in my mind that he could play in a similar role for this game. The fact that Franny Jeffers and Leon Clarke came of
the training pitch with hamstring niggles yesterday made that decision a bit easier but Jermaine certainly played his part.” Irvine also paid tribute to the 4,800 fans who gave his team outstanding backing throughout the South Yorkshire derby: “The Sheffield Wednesday fans were terrific. The noise they generated throughout the game was incredible. I always looked forward to going to Hillsborough eith other clubs because of the atmosphere you could expect but as an away support today the noise they made was awesome.”

There was a lovely warm glow to be felt walking out of Oakwell on Saturday. People helping each other up the now familiar hill to the Metrodome, sporadic cries of ‘Handball!’ and the strange and forgotten feeling of pride and victory helped to ease the pain of the past three months. Of course it is too early to relax and dream of playoff action next season. Of course it is premature to acknowledge Alan Irvine as the long awaited saviour of Sheffield Wednesday. Of course it shouldn’t be forgotten that we are still in the bottom three. There will be negative vibe merchants on every corner with those three points on special offer but I say walk on by. I’m still basking in the wake of Saturday’s game and will do so until we lose again (quite possibly before you read this away at Blackpool). The reason why I persist in sitting in cold and often half empty stands with only the choice of cold or lukewarm Bovril to warm me up is that feeling of satisfaction when Wednesday walk off the pitch having won with guts, glory and, dare I say it, a modicum of competence. I often wonder why people risk their lives by climbing mountains or risk their brain cells by sitting by a lake for hours at a time. Those very same people will probably ask me why I spend substantial amounts of money on watching people I have never met kick a ball around, typically losing in the process. My reply will simply be to explain the feeling of happiness and belonging I felt on Saturday. A feeling I hope to replicate plenty more times yet.

CRESWELL STRIKE SEALS THE POINTS FOR BLADES Richard Cresswell’s second half goal - his fifth in Blades colours - was enough to secure a deserved home victory over Middlesbrough. The striker stooped to convert Andy Taylor’s cross to ensure the impressive run of late continues. Henri Camara was denied by a post late on but Mark Bunn and his defence were barely tested by Boro. Manager Blackwell made just one change with the fit-again Walker returning in the rightback position and Geary dropping to the bench, where he was joined by Henderson and Ward. Boro included Flood, Robson and Killen, all signed from Celtic in midweek. With the snow melted, rain holding off and little wind, conditions were good for United’s first Championship game of 2010. Less than a minute had elapsed before Wheater was called upon to stop Cresswell after Evans had knocked down Walker’s cross. From Middlesbrough’s first attack, Seip cleared from Aliadiere and then Morgan blocked Osbourne’s shot but a crowded midfield prevented any clear cut chances being created by either side. Cresswell picked up an early booking for a challenge on McMahon and referee D’Urso made himself even more unpopular on 25 minutes when he failed to spot a handball in Boro’s box. Walker’s header into the penalty area clearly hit Robson but there was no spotkick award. Back on defensive duties, Walker timed his tackle on Flood to perfection in the area and then Bunn did well to hold on to a high ball, despite being under pressure. The United goalkeeper was called upon twice more to make saves before the interval, firstly from Osbourne after a fortunate ricochet presented him with a chance and then from Riggott’s header following a Robson free-kick. Mr D’Urso was thrust back into

the limelight on 34 minutes, starting with a booking for Robson following his challenge on Quinn, who, along with O’Neil, were also shown yellow cards for a disagreement which ended with them going nose-to-nose. The closing stages of the first half were incident less, with a lack of action in the penalty area giving both goalkeepers an easy ride until the interval. Both managers resisted the urge to make a change at half-time but O’Neil attempted to break the deadlock with two early freekicks in the second half. Williamson was booked for a foul on Flood before United began to get a foothold, trying to force the visitors back. Walker’s centre beat everyone and flew across the face of goal and then the ball would not drop for Evans after Williamson’s head down. A bit of pressure, though, did the trick... the opening goal arrived on 56 minutes. Taylor was the instigator; he played a one-two with Evans from a free-kick before whipping in a cross which CRESSWELL converted from close range. The United striker got the better of Wheater but didn’t know his header had beaten Coyne until turning round to see the ball nestling in the back of the net at the Kop end. Boro had a big penalty appeal waved away moments later when Aliadiere went down at pace under a combined challenge from Seip and Walker. The play-on call from Mr D’Urso all but confirmed that United would not receive a penalty soon after when Evans tumbled following Riggott’s challenge. Middlesbrough made the first substitution of the day, introducing Johnson, and just two minutes later he had set Hoyte free down the left but from the subsequent cross Robson could not keep the ball down. On 68 minutes a good move almost brought the Blades a second. From a Cresswell cross, Evans cushioned the ball
into the path of the onrushing Harper, but he could not keep his effort down but Blackwell indicated more attacking endeavour by introducing Ward and Camara. Middlesbrough, chasing a leveller, should have been on the offensive in the later stages but United used attack as the best form of defence to keep the visitors at bay. It was Quinn who started a fine move on 85 minutes which saw Harper illegally stopped on the edge of the box by Riggott but Camara played on and curled his effort against the base of the post, watching in agony as the loose ball dropped into the grateful arms Coyne. Johnson fired a long-range free-kick over and Franks was stopped by Montgomery as the visitors searched for a spark, whilst United introduced Henderson for the tiring Cresswell, possibly to add extra power to the rearguard. Four minutes of added time was announced and despite the groan from the crowd at the amount of injury minutes, the Blades negotiated the time with little fuss - securing three more valuable points to keep the pressure on the top Championship sides. Blades: Bunn, Montgomery, Morgan, Evans (Camara 70), Williamson (Ward 70), Harper, Taylor, Cresswell (Henderson 89), Seip, Quinn, Walker. Unused: Bennett, Stewart, Geary, Fortune. Boro: Coyne, Hoyte, Riggott, Aliadiere (Johnson 63), Killen, Flood (Franks 75), O’Neil, Robson, McMahon, Wheater, Osbourne. Unused: Bent, Arca, Bennett, Steele, Williams.
The place to be United have climbed back into sixth place in the Championship for the first time since early October and Kevin Blackwell can draw comfort from the knowledge that his sides normally get stronger as the campaign progresses: “In the last couple of seasons we have been the form side of the Championship from Christmas onwards - we work very hard on our fitness. “Last year we gradually dragged Birmingham back towards us and were in contention for automatic promotion right up until the last day.” The fact is that few sides can streak away from the rest and stay well clear even though in recent seasons that looked as if it might be the case. Currently, Newcastle, WBA and Nottingham Forest are setting the pace but with almost four months of the season remaining there is still plenty of time for them to falter, and others to capitalise on it: “Right now we have to try and stay in the top six and not kill ourselves before the run-in. Middlesbrough on Saturday were a lot bigger and tougher than they used to be and that is becoming typical of this division so I am glad that fixture is out of the way. “Our side has been rebuilt again since May so it pleases me that we are now where I would gladly have settled for when we began in August.” The Blades take a break from league action this weekend when they go to Bolton in the FA Cup on Saturday, before Reading visit the Lane on Tuesday in the Championship.

Gaffer’s A VIEW SHEFFIELD verdict FROM THE UNITED 2009/10 FIXTURES TERRACE The guts of his team and the support of the fans were praised in equal measure as Kevin Blackwell reflected on another win, and a fifth successive clean sheet at home in the league. Richard Cresswell’s secondhalf header put Middlesbrough to the sword and the Blades boss conceded that his halftime talk centred on the need to stay focussed and strong: “I said to them that we had to be patient and grind it out, and that if it had to go to the last two or three minutes before won, so be it. “It was the sort of game where somebody being brave in either box would prove the difference and ‘Cressy’ was that man today for us. He is someone I have had before so I know what he is about.” Goals at the Lane have been hard to come by, largely because the opposition have set out their stall not to concede: “Teams certainly don’t come here and make it easy for us and patience really does have to be the key - from myself, the team and the fans. “It was a bit of a chess match at times but our supporters were fantastic and when they shout like they did in the second-half the lads can’t help but be inspired and run even harder.” With Kilgallon ruled out with a slight calf strain United included Walker in place of Geary but the visitors threw in all three new signings from Celtic: “I thought that Gordon would do that to make his side solid and he played two strong banks of four, and I am glad that we counteracted that. “As far as preparation goes the new signings being involved made it difficult for us because we didn’t know how they would line up at set-plays and we had to work it out as we went along.” The win lifted the side into sixth place, built on just one defeat in the last twelve league and cup games: “Our lads have a great desire to win games. As the match went on we got better and better and we could have won by two or three goals. “It is the time of year when you need a resilience about you and results often have to be ground out, especially at home because our reputation here means that teams come to frustrate us. “We’ve had snow, now the pitches are heavy, and it can be like running in treacle but I thought Quinn, Harper and Montgomery were magnificent considering that this afternoon.”

The January shopping list Sheffield United fans will all have their own ideas of what the Blades should be looking for to bolster their squad in this January transfer window. Many would argue that competition for on loan stopper Mark Bunn is a priority, or that an accomplished utility man to cover the back four is a must. Others would point to the recurrent problem of creativity from midfield and that something fresh is vital in that area. And of course there’s the obvious desire of all teams in the Championship to stumble upon a striker who can get the goals to lead an assault on the promotion places. If you believe what you read on the forums and message-boards, the Blades’ squad would already have swelled to twice its size in the transfer window’s first two weeks alone. Ultimately the only shopping list that matters is the one so closely guarded by Blades chief Kevin Blackwell. The addition of centre half Marcel Seip on loan and permanent signing of loanee Richard Cresswell has added definite strength to the squad; both played admirable roles in Saturday’s win against Middlesbrough. But what we have added in strength still needs matching in style. The imminent signing of Boro’ winger Mark Yeates would definitely go some way to redressing that balance. It hasn’t quite worked for the former Tottenham and Colchester winger during his time at the Riverside, but he is a very talented wide-man who will bring something different to what we already have. In all honesty when we have the majority of our squad fit there is enough to suggest that a play off place is the least we can hope for. However one more signing that would make this transfer window one of our most special in recent times would be the recapture of Kyle Naughton from Spurs. If at all it would almost certainly only be a short term deal until the end of the season, but what a massive boost it would be to our promotion aspirations. With that, Blackwell’s January shopping trip would be complete, and I for one would have very few complaints.
