SHEFFIELD ARENA ANNOUNCES ITʼS HIGHLIGHTS FOR 2010 SPECIAL FEATURE - PAGE 6

Avondale Management is pleased to announce that Sheffield 2010 will open the World Indoor Trial Championship following a request from the FIM. An additional three riders will be joining the original line up at Sheffield Indoor Arena, so now the world’s top 10 Trial riders will come together to battle it out over some of the toughest obstacles. This year they will not only be competing for the coveted King of Sheffield title but now also for points in the first round of the World Championship! “At the request of the FIM we have negotiated for Sheffield to become the first round of the 2010 Championship. Contracts were already in place with our seven invited riders and not wishing to go back on our word Sheffield will now run with those riders and the additional three for the FIM Championship. This will make it the best ever line up at Sheffield and a qualifier will decide who goes through to the final,” explained Neil Crosswaite,

from Avondale Management. “It’s going to be one hell of an action packed evening, I can’t wait!” This will be the 15th year at Sheffield Arena in what has become renowned as the world’s No 1 Indoor Motorcycle Trial event. The event is famous for having the most innovative and daring sections and our massive crowds (over 100,000 spectators to date), who have been amazed at the pure skill on show from the very best riders in the world. With hours of intense action, nail-biting excitement you will go home wondering how 4 hours (approx) could have gone so quickly – that’s the magic of Sheffield! A giant 40 meter square video screen will transmit all the action to ensure you don’t miss a moment of the action. Please note that this year’s event will not be shown live on TV and in person in Sheffield on 9th January is the only way to see the event live! This years interval entertainment will be provided by Danny Macaskill an amazing

SALES SEASON So you’ve barely recovered from the annual day of feasting, drinking and merriment but there is no time to waste; the January sales are about to begin and there are plenty of bargains to be had at recession-busting prices at Crystal Peaks.

If you thought Christmas shopping was a magical and thrilling experience, then January will leave you breathless with excitement at Crystal Peaks. The sales start as early as Boxing Day (26th December) in certain stores and continue right up until the end of January. When the sales are in full swing, stores will be teaming with excited shoppers hunting for an exclusive purchase at a reduced price so it’s always a good idea to leave lots of time to peruse

the shelves and find the very best of the bargains. If Santa didn’t get you that much desired designer handbag or winter coat you had your heart set on, get down to Crystal Peaks shopping centre and Retail Park and pick them up for yourself. You’re sure to find what you’re looking for along with hundreds of other fantastic sale items. Remember, the key to clever sales shopping is to only buy the clothes, shoes and accessories that you really need. Don’t buy killer heels that hurt or jeans that you’ll only squeeze into when you’ve reached your ideal, post-festive season weight, buy bargains that are going to make and feel great for the rest of the year. If you do spot that perfect bargain outfit, don’t leave

it and come back for it as it may well be gone- if you like it, buy it to avoid disappointment. Camille have an outstanding offer; everything in store is half price, offers end on January 15th. Are there any friends or family birthdays or special occasions coming up? Ensure you keep your eyes peeled for any great priced items that you could give as gifts, best to save the pennies when you can. And now the kids are back to school, are they running low on school equipment or uniform? The sales are the best opportunity to pick up all the essential items that will be needed at some point during the new term so why not bag yourself a bargain. Happy New Year and Happy Shopping!

An Open Mind A weekly column written by International Medium, Author & Visionary Joanne Gregory

PREDICTIONS FOR 2010 Whilst working with and for spirit I discover quite a lot more than just the personal predictions for my clients. As with everyone at this time of year my mind has automatically turned to what the New Year will bring for me and the world in general. I believe that this year will be quite extraordinary for many people and I predict a massive u turn in many things that we have been subjected to over the last year that have not been quite so pleasant. The recession that has been so well documented has already begun to turn around, and I believe that by the time we alter the clocks for British summer time there will be a noticeable change in the housing market here in the UK, a sure fire sign that things are picking up. The building trade will also see an upturn and new houses will be built again this summer, noticeably so. Not all the predictions I have for this year are as positive as I would like them to be so I will scurry through those for you. They are obviously worth mentioning or they would not have come through, but I prefer as little energy as possible to be sent to them. There is also the possibility that something could be done to change the problems if someone knows

about them, so here goes. There will be a pretty big glitch with a stadium that is being built in the UK in the South and anyone who is involved in this should be aware that it’s going to cost more than they could imagine because of a problem with plumbing, pipes, heating etc. It will be well documented and heads will roll, so to speak. It will mean that tactics have to be changed as far as the forthcoming Olympic Games are concerned. There will be the death of a leader this year that will bring immense grief in one place and a sigh of relief in others. A male Hollywood star will lose his life saving others in a country he decided to visit at the last minute. On a lighter note Siamese twins will be successfully separated around August time and they would not normally be candidates for separation. There will be groundbreaking eye surgery on a little girl in the USA or Canada that will change the way blindness is treated worldwide. There will be a major change within our government at a time when it is unexpected and a new bill will change the way politicians are allowed to behave with regards to money, particularly expenses. There will be a lot of controversy over this and again it will be

well documented. There will be an unexpected Royal death. A woman will be elected into a position of power and make real change in a country that has never seen female leadership. An assassination attempt will be prevented in a developed country. A new team, car supplier, will be allowed to race in the Grand Prix and will do very well. There will be a major breakthrough in the treatment of Motor Neurone or Parkinson disease type illnesses and also the treatment of Alzheimer’s will change when new drugs are dispensed this year. They will have a life improving or lengthening properties for sufferers. The next Nobel peace prize will be given to a woman. On the whole it is a positive year for the economy and things will feel easier for us everyday folk, financially. Whatever does come to pass this year make sure you remember that much of what will happen will be our own doing, we create our world with our belief system.

I have to say, now that it is all over and done that this year’s festivities have been much quieter than usual. I have never been one for going out on Christmas Eve, particularly when my twin daughters were small, as the evening before the arrival of Santa Claus was both busy and exciting. This year was the first Christmas with my new girlfriend Caron and Jack, her eight year old son. Regrettably, Christmas this year was Dad’s turn to have Jack, and so I was denied the joy of being woken up at five in the morning with cries of ‘He’s been’. To compensate, Caron and I had best champagne and hot croissants for breakfast before Jack arrived with his Dad to open his second lot of presents. Previously, I have always found a pub open on Christmas Day lunchtime in order to have a couple of pints in a male only preserve (no pudding burners out for this session) as the total clientele was made up of men resplendent in brand new trousers and pullovers, having a quick one before a huge Christmas dinner and the inevitable post meal snooze. This year was different, as I was deputed to prepare the vegetables, whilst my better half who is a competent chef, did all the rest. It was a joy to see the reindeer dust, the wine and mince pie consumed and also Rudolph’ s carrot half eaten. Roll on next year. My life now is totally trans-

formed, and I was delighted to enjoy two family nights out, both as it happens involving my great pal Stephanie King. Firstly, Caron, her Dad Arthur, a delightful man and Jack met up with Stephanie and the young Stars of the Future for an evening of ten pin bowling. Due to the injuries sustained in my bad fall two years ago, I was unable to join in, but had a great evening, nevertheless, and Jack was in his element mixing with the children who are all tremendous company. The next night was spent with the four of us going to Manor Social to see the Stars of the Future Roadshow which as usual was excellent entertainment and filled the club to capacity. Boxing day was party time at Gary Sinclair’s house in the evening, Amongst the guests was my old pal, ex Sheffield United defender Ted Hemsley. I have always been very envious of Ted as from the age of fifteen he has played professional football in the winter and professional cricket for Worcestershire in the summer. What a wonderful life he has had something akin to Roy of the Rovers. After seventeen years in football and twenty years playing cricket. Ted pursued his interest in horse racing and for many years was a bookmaker in Dronfield. Today, Ted is still involved in horse racing working as a ring inspector. I must confess that when Ted told me he was now a ring inspector, I thought he was some sort of

OLD DECADE PROBLEMS CREATE NEW DECADE CHALLENGES 2010 is going to be a very interesting year. The readers of this paper and our advertisers may well be faced with some of the most difficult challenges as the situations created over the last decade come home to roost at the beginning of this. VAT is back to 17.5% and it may well rise again before the end of this year and the small revival in the housing market may well be stalled due to the fact that the stamp duty holiday is now over. Government borrowing is at an astonishing level and the amount spent on public services just has to be reduced and this at a time when UK PLC may see a reduction in it’s international credit rating which would lead to higher interest payments on future government borrowing. It doesn’t stop there however as pressure will increase for interest rates to rise along with inflation. It’s a curious and black art which goes under the name

‘quantitative easing’. I am certainly not an economist but it’s seems strange to me that getting the Bank of England to print more money and flood the economy with billions of pounds with previously non-existent funds should somehow create a stimulus. This seems to be a bleak introduction but once again it’s the working man and woman that will bear the brunt of the mistakes made by politicians and bankers. I have recently finished reading a great book called ‘Cityboy’ which exposes the vile and corrupt nonsense that goes on in the City of London financial markets. I have long held the view that the stock market is a fantasy created by investment analysts, bankers and hedge fund managers simply to create wealth for the few, built on foundations of shifting sand, and this book really gives an insight into what really goes on. The excesses of these individu-

als and the deceit and sham tactics that make money make some reading and I was filled with fury at times reading this book. A soldier goes to war for £18000 per year and a ‘Cityboy’ can make short term decisions and predictions that can easily create an income of £500000 and this based on manipulation of data that has no real substance when put to the test. The Mercury Newspaper is a publication that operates within quite a narrow social strata being essentially a ‘working class’ paper which is distributed through pubs, clubs, public buildings and shopping centres. It can also be found on Powells buses which run the early morning shift to the steelworks etc as well as providing services all over the region. This is why I wish to raise these issues on this page. 5% of the population control 80% of the wealth in this country and this government have created a new

Jeff Michaels a local vocalist writes: - I have not written since Mark Richie left the Mercury last year, I hope he is well and keeping busy. I hope 2010 is a good year for everybody. Having been brought up listening to great rock & roll bands like Dave Hawley and Chuck Fowler it was a pleasure to see a new local group recently, called The Buddies. If you like rock & roll music, look out for these guys, you will enjoy them! I‘ve seen them twice now at Colley Club, firstly when they auditioned for Cee Bee, “In the beginning show” and secondly when they were booked for Friday 1st January. The Buddies are Danny, who is lead singer, lead/rhythm guitar and is also an accomplished drummer. Carl who does backing vocals and plays the double bass. Robert is on saxophone and Paul is the drummer. THEY ARE 100% LIVE and their repertoire includes songs from early Elvis, Buddy Holly, Carl Perkins, Little Richard, Johny Kidd, Johny Cash , Sufaris (Wipeout) and even Glen Miller (In the mood) Apart from The Past Masters. class over the last 10 years. Years ago there were the three classes and people knew what they were about and the ‘class system’ didn’t really punish those people that had aspirations and neither did it really hold anyone back. It was a political tool which could be used to whip up the masses into believing they were being denied access to a better life. The divide between rich and poor has never been so great and the ‘Orwellian’ statement that “all men are equal but some are more equal than others” may well be more true now than it has ever been. It would be claimed that more school leavers go to University now than ever but to what end in the majority of cases. There are still only the same number of better paying jobs around and getting ahead in life is more difficult now than it has ever been. The war on terror has created more terrorists, the war on drugs has created more addicts,

dealers and crimes and there are now so many cars on the roads that journeys take longer and longer. Our water, electricity and gas are owned by foreign companies and even the working mans game, football, is a money sodden, debt ridden creation where it’s now virtually impossible for anything but the larger clubs to progress and succeed. If ever we needed a change of direction from whichever colour the government turns out to be it’s now. 2009 was an interesting year for us here at The Mercury. I have to say that the highlights were the events towards the end of the year. The 1940s night and Clubland Awards at Wadley Bridge WMC were great nights and the concert in aid of Weston Park at the Cathedral was a triumph. Editorially the paper improved and there are now more features than ever. Advertisers tell us that they gain business using our services and this has to

be a good thing. All in all the second half of the year provided us with opportunities for growth in the years ahead. We made improvements by taking positive action and it has to be the way forward for our clubs and pubs. Week after week we hear reports from Derek Tomlinson and the witty and sometimes ascerbic observations of our premier columnist Howard Copley and we are grateful for their work and the responses they encourage. We care about the licensed trade and we acknowledge the difficulties they sometimes face be they a managed or tenanted house or a club. The government is unlikely to make things much easier and the economy will certainly create issues which make things harder still. Don’t wait for events to overtake your business you really need to do something about it now.

BULLDOG SPIRIT

and Anne who struggled in this morning. Stephen really is a credit to the paper and also an example to many younger people who couldn’t get to work this morning. Both Stephen and Anne are senior ‘mature’ individuals but they were determined to get here. David Platts has designed and set the entire paper, just about, and prepared it

for print. I encourage you to have a good look at how much work goes into this and it’s quite a task (please don’t look too close, fatigue set in hours ago - DP). We’re still here, it’s still snowing, it’s late and there are 2 more pages of the paper to complete. Never missed an issue and we’re not starting now. BRING IT ON!!!!

This issue of the paper and the last have had to be produced under very unusual circumstances. When we arrived on publication day just before Christmas there was no power here due to the fact that some ne’er do wells had dug up the power cable and nicked it leaving us without electricity. What’s more they had stashed their ill gotten gains and come back and taken them under the noses of the engineers as the endeavoured to carry out repairs. The team here came into the darkened and cold premises, disconnected the computers and took them away to designer Jamie Jackson’s house, wired them up and connected to the internet and managed to get the paper to press on time. We came back to work under the certain knowledge that this was unlikely to happen ever again and a great deal of credit has to go to David, Lindsey and Jamie for their determination in getting the pre-Christmas issue out on time. I am typing this as me and David sit alone, after hours, in a snow bound office making sure that this issue gets aways to the printers on time. Thanks to Stephen

GOODBYE TO THE DECADE As usual at this time of year the gig front is non existent, everyone is recovering from too much drink and food to be out on tour and the record companies are planning on their strategies for the coming year after they have cleaned up selling the “Best Of” Albums over Xmas to Mums, Dads, and Gran’s as last minuet stocking fillers. It amazes’ me that every year they repackage the same records as hit compilations and they still sell! Surely by now everyone who wants them has got the best of the 60’s the 70’s the 80’s the best Xmas songs ever, the best cowboy

songs! The best bus driver’s whistle! (Hmm, maybe not, but look out for that one next year), but you get the idea. Tell you what, maybe in 2010 they should sign some good bands instead of relying on the usual rubbish they spoon feed us on radio or the X Factor. Which brings me nicely on to the Xmas No1 I bet they didn’t see that coming did they Rage Against The Machine beating the X Factor popette to No1... there really is a God. I know there is some good music out there that’s why we try to let you know about it in these pages and the past decade has been a strange

time for music and with the proliferation of downloads in particular making it hard on musicians. It will be Interesting to say the least what the next ten years of the music biz will bring. Looking back on the decade Sheffield’s Arctic Monkeys made the biggest impact from our local band’s on the world stage showing how to use the Internet to get fame and fortune. Other notable Sheffield bands that made a mark on the decade include: Milburn, The Long Blondes, Bromheads Jacket, Harrisons, Richard Hawley, Little Man Tate, and Reverend And The Makers. I’m sure as I

write there are bands in Sheffield vying for the “Big Time” hopefully this year, only time will tell. One thing I am sure about is the record Industry has an uncanny knack of re-inventing itself no matter what it is faced with. Whether you are into music or just a casual listener as far as I’m concerned it’s one of Human kind’s most incredible inventions! A world without it would truly be a depressing place. So here’s to the next decade of musicians whether they originate from Sheffield or not. I salute you and forever may you compose the soundtrack to our lives.

Oh what joy, what joy, what joy! To see that justice (or rather Facebook) was done at Christmas with the No.1 single being Rage Against The Machine’s ‘Killing In The Name Of’ thus making sure that Simon Cowell’s treacly, insipid X-Factor single, sickingly entitled ‘The Climb’ didn’t hit the top spot for the fourth year running. It was a great show of people power and two fingers up to corporatism. It also has really helped single sales it seems and got people enthused about music more. So many kids nowadays think music is watered down commercial rubbish, but there is so much amazing stuff out there if you just spend a bit of time and search the internet. Of course not everyone wants or can do this, but in a few years it will all be a part of out TV sets, it’ll be easy for everyone. Anyway, I digress, back to reviews……….apart from I must just say, that now Lady GaGa has kept the X-Factor single from getting to No.1!! Fanf**kingtastic! (Yeah, I know the X-Factor single managed to scrape to No.1 in-between Christmas and New Year, but no-one actually noticed). We hope you caught our very special exclusive interview with Gary Numan in our holiday issue. If you missed it then beg steal or borrow a copy from somewhere.

reviews by presley artist: Chris Brown single: I Can Transform You release date: Out Now Well, he certainly transformed Rhianna’s face! But he’s done his time (even though he seemed to use it more for promotion every time he was filmed cleaning the streets). This single features Little Wayne (as does virtually every song at the moment). It’s basically electro rap, its got the annoyingly common American thing on it………yes that melodine affect on the voice which makes it go………..well you know, a bit wobbly. Which basically means that when it’s performed live, it usually aint. I’m going to be honest, I’m not keen on this track, no matter what my views on Chris Brown are. Its three minutes too long. But it’s not the worst rap tune I’ve ever heard but it’s just so common of everything that’s coming out of America at the moment. He can do decent music, if you here him do ‘With You’ it’d really surprise you, it did me! He can sing……..so…….. sing more!!

artist: Lost Prophets ng single:Where We Belo release date: January 11th The Prophets have always been a class act. The formed in Wales around twelve years ago and they were more of a post-punk band. This is still evident when you hear this single, it’s more alternative rock. It’s very Green Day for the first minute or so, then has some incredible backing vocals, then a fast paced rock chorus with grinding guitars and then………back to the Green Day bit, and so it goes on. The chorus’ is a killer though! It’s a good rock tune, it won’t win them many new fans but it’ll keep the masses they already have very happy. They’re touring this year virtually everywhere except Sheffield???? Why??? But they’re worth checking out if you fancy travelling to Birmingham or Manchester.

ANDY ON THE ROAD TO RECOVERY

REVIEW OF 2009 January – The year started with a return to hospital broadcasting roots; initially all services were purely for the broadcast of commentary of football games. After years of coverage of Rotherham United FC home games, the move to Don Valley Stadium brought a temporary halt to our coverage whilst we raised money to purchase a Broadcasters Mobile Phone which allowed normal service to resume in January. February – At a second bite of the cherry we were able to collect in the Tesco Superstore in Rotherham. The original dates given turned out to be the weekend of snow for the year and with treacherous conditions the store kindly offered us a further date for a couple of weeks later when things had thawed out! We also met with NHS Rotherham to discuss ways in which we could help spread their health promotion messages and were able to form an effective partnership arrangement. March – To mark National Stop Smoking Day, Zahra Velji from the Stop Smoking Centre at the Hospital popped into the studio for an interview to promote the benefits of kicking the habit. We had a full team outing to Don Valley Stadium, no commentary

this time though, it was for a collection – thanks to the generous Rotherham and Chesterfield fans. Through a friend of a friend, we were invited to give a talk to the Chantry Ladies club meeting and entertained the ladies with a pop quiz. April – Another interview, this time Amy Black from the Connect To Work service who offer support and guidance to people in receipt of disability benefits wanting to get back into work. We also held a membership Open Day for people to visit the studio and discuss whether they would like to volunteer. Plus we recorded our first service of the year from the Rotherham Minster on Easter Day. May – Another talk, Minster visit and interview but not before we celebrated 10 years of broadcasting on 1350mw. The talk was to the Retired Teachers Association, the Minster service was for the inauguration of Cllr Shaukat Ali as Mayor of Rotherham and the interview a review of the work of the Doncaster Gate Heritage Project with Emily Uren. June – The start of holiday season and things get a little quiet but we still managed a collection on the Tanyard Shopping Centre at Wickersley. July – We met with Jim Curry of the Mercury Newspaper and the idea of the Radio Nightingale column was started!! August – There was an interview with Carol Bowser of Winthrop Park, a local sensory garden and we took part in a national fund-

raising event, The Small Charity Car Draw Raffle, sadly we had no winners. September – Two Minster services, first a Musical Mix with the Rotherham Schools Music Service and the Reisa Band from Germany. Followed the next morning by the Battle of Britain commemoration ceremony. Sports coverage expanded as we added commentaries of Sheffield Steelers Ice Hockey games to our schedule. October – A letter from Eileen who spared the time to write and let us know she was enjoying listening to our programmes. November – A technical challenge to broadcast live the Remembrance Sunday service from the Minster and wreath laying at the Cenotaph was achieved in the pouring rain. Plus we received a donation from the Rotherham Floral Arts Society. December – Visitors to programmes were the Rotherham 31st Guides who raised money for the station by bag packing and they read out requests to help achieve their communications badge. Also, two more Minster services, the Schools Music Service Carol Concert and our 1st year anniversary of Carols by Candlelight. Thank you to everyone who’s helped and supported Radio Nightingale throughout 2009 and we wish everyone a Happy New Year and a prosperous 2010!

ICE HOCKEY - STEELERS NEWS Words & Pics by Sarah Youle

ISSUE 830

STEELERS FESTIVE FAILURE Disappointed Steelers fans saw their team lose not once but twice over the Christmas weekend to their biggest rivals, the Nottingham Panthers. On Boxing Day the Steelers traveled to the NIC in Nottingham, to play before a capacity crowd which, according to Nottingham press, contained the largest number of Panthers fans and the smallest number of Sheffield fans (around 500), of any meeting between the two teams. The first goal was a fair time coming, with Kevin Bergin putting the Panthers ahead in the 19th minute. The game got off to a rough start as Jason Hewitt and Panthers’ Bruce Richardson renewed their rivalry and both took a 5 minute penalty for fighting, after which there was a lengthy delay as Hewitt’s blood was scraped from the ice, before eventually Panthers’ management phoned to have the Zamboni brought on for a final cleanup. There were no further goals in the first period, and the Steelers got the first goal of the second, as Doug Sheppard fired home a shot at 21:15, assisted by Jeff Legue, his 100th career EIHL assist. David Clarke gave the lead back to the Panthers in the 33rd minute, and the score remained 2-1

through the third period. Sunday saw the return leg, and fans battled early sales traffic to get to the Arena. Joey Talbot opened the scoring for the Steelers in the second minute of the game, but it wasn’t long before the Panthers answered with a goal from Player-Coach Corey Neilson. Steelers’ Captain Jonathan Phillips, who had sat out the previous night’s game in Nottingham following a penalty resulting in a ban the week before added the Steelers’ second goal at 17:15, and the Steelers began the second period in the lead. Cameron Mann soon put the visitors level, however, with a goal

in the 23rd minute, and the scores remained tied until the final two minutes of the second period, a disastrous two minutes for the Steelers, as the Panthers fired home three goals within the space of 89 seconds. Jade Galbraith put the Panthers ahead, and Dominic D’Amour added his goal shortly afterwards. Just 22 seconds later, young Brit Robert Lachowicz added the Panthers’ fifth goal. Joey Talbot added a consolation goal at 45:49, but it was too little too late for the Steelers, who finished on the losing end of the biggest rivalry in British ice hockey for the second time in two days.

attention on the Championship battle ahead following an FA Cup third round defeat to Crystal Palace. Goals from Neil Danns and Calvin Andrew either side of the break ousted Wednesday, with Clint Hill’s own goal just before half time proving academic. Francis Jeffers started for the Owls and academy youngster Liam Palmer took a maiden place on the bench alongside first year professional Arron Jameson. Caretaker manager Sean McAuley kicked off with an enterprising three forwards on the field in a 4-3-3 formation but after an uneventful start, it was Palace that struck first on 19 minutes. The Owls defence failed to deal with an attacking threat down the right from Shaun Scannell and the ball broke across the six-yard box for Danns to tap home in simple style at the back post. Danns thumped a blistering volley wide a minute later as Palace looked to firm up their advantage but the game swiftly reverted to type, with neither side posing a real threat in the final third. Marcus Tudgay tested Julian Speroni from Darren Potter’s corner as the Owls sought to increase their attacking play ahead of the interval and they made their brief flurry of pressure count on 43 minutes. Tom Soares and Tudgay both had shots charged down - the latter with the questionable use of an arm by a grounded Eagles defender - before Leon Clarke placed a low effort across Speroni that was helped into the net by the backtracking figure of the unfortunate Hill. With an already congested calendar ahead, a draw was last on the list of both sides so the game continued at a more than steady pace. Alan Lee and Clarke each fired opportunist shots wide early in the second period before Wednesday started to up the ante, bossing possession if not calling Speroni into action. Mark Beevers glanced narrowly wide from Jeffers’ whipped-in cross but suddenly the Eagles soared into the lead totally against the run of play. Substitute Andrew muscled his way into the penalty area from the left flank and his accurate shot across Grant nestled into the net with the aid of the post. The Owls burst straight upfield and almost drew level

O’CONNOR WINS DECEMBER AWARD Sheffield Wednesday midfielder James O’Connor has won the Handley Brown Player of the Month vote for December. The award is the Irishman’s first since signing for the Owls in the summer of 2008 and richly deserved given his consistent performances throughout last month. O’Connor is happy to take the plaudits from Wednesdayites - but says that helping to steer the Owls clear of the relegation trapdoor is of far greater importance. He exclusively told Wednesday Player: “I’m happy to win and I’d like to thank the supporters for voting for me but it’s bittersweet because of the predicament that we’re in. “I’m desperate to get out if it and Saturday’s game against Peterborough is about as big as it gets. “Looking at the fixtures, January is a massive month for us and the sooner we get that first win on the board the better.”

BLADES MAKE THE DRAW GAFFER’S WE WILL BUT FACE A REPLAY REACTION COMPETE A replay will be needed to see if either the Blades or Queens Park Rangers will play in the fourth round of the FA Cup. For the second time in 15 days, United and QPR fought out a draw with Richard Cresswell again netting against the Hoops. Stephen Quinn and Ched Evans both struck the crossbar as the Blades bossed the majority of the game. United’s first game was played in freezing temperatures at Bramall Lane and the stalemate will mean the sides will battle it out again on Tuesday 12 January. It appears that the days of making excessive changes for the cup are over with Blackwell forced into just one alteration to his team that saw out 2009 with a victory. Taylor took the place of hamstringvictim Stewart at left-back, whilst on the bench Harper returned after injury to sit alongside newboy Seip. Bunn, in the first game since extending his loan deal from Blackburn until the end of the campaign, had to be alert and off his line quickly to stem an early threat from Routledge but, backed by the Kop, United started well. Morgan had already headed a free-kick from Ward wide before an encouraging move on nine minutes, beginning with a neat lay-off by Evans which gave Camara freedom. He avoided a lunging challenge in the box from Gorkss before laying off and watching Quinn’s effort pound back off the crossbar. United again went close to opening the scoring on 18 minutes when Taylor took his time and picked the right ball, which floated over the head of Gorkss, but Camara was put under pressure from Borrowdale just as he was about to shoot. QPR hit back with long-range efforts from Buzsaky, Simpson and Leigertwood but Bunn was forced into just one save. The efforts did, however, signal that the visitors were coming back into the game, further emphasised by Bunn directing away another Buzsaky attempt. Cresswell and Taylor were booked within two minutes of each other and soon after QPR grasped the lead. Routledge found space on the right and his low cross was missed by Taylor allowing SIMPSON to sweep the ball home from eight yards. The Rangers goal prompted the Blades to get back on to the front foot and Camara edged between Faurlin and Ramage but was nudged out of the way by Stewart although the appeals for a penalty fell on deaf ears. But, in the third and final minute of added time at the end of the half, United recorded a leveller. From a set-piece the visitors failed to clear their lines and when Quinn swung in a ball from the right, CRESSWELL rose highest to head into the top corner of Cerny’s net. The goalscorer was injured moments before netting and still looked in pain as his team-mates celebrated with him. Cresswell did reappear for the second half but Kilgallon didn’t and his place was taken by Seip, on for his debut. Looking to continue the momentum, the Blades had the first opportunity after

the restart but, after taking advantage of a Gorkss slip, Camara’s shot was punched away by Cerny. On 55 minutes United went even closer but again QPR survived. A neat flick by Camara began a move which ended with Evans laying off to Ward, whose pre-planned slice curled just wide of the post. Stewart bundled a Buzsaky corner wide for the home side but United were quickly back on to the front foot. Ward almost benefitted from charging down a Cerny clearance and then Cresswell and Camara both had efforts blocked in the same move on 69 minutes. Despite having the territorial advantage and most of the offensive possession, United’s chances dried up and Blackwell introduced Williamson for the final ten minutes in an attempt to nick a winner. Three sides of Bramall Lane rose to their feet and then groaned simultaneously on 81 minutes. Following the award of a free-kick 30 yards from goal, Evans unleashed a thunderbolt that smashed against the crossbar and hit Cerny on the way out. In the final ten minutes, Geary was booked, Morgan took a whack to the head, which needed a bit of treatment, and Little was brought on as United’s third substitution. Three minutes of added time brought very little, apart from Cresswell snuffing out Helguson from a free-kick, to ensure that both sides made into the hat for the fourth round draw.

Kevin Blackwell rued a series of missed chances and the lack of a lucky break in the draw with QPR as his team missed an opportunity of claiming a 4th round place in the FA Cup draw. The Blades fell behind but clawed their way back through Richard Cresswell’s header before the break and the United boss felt his team did enough to merit a win: “We had the better chances and hit the bar twice but sometimes it just doesn’t happen for you. We really went for it and my only frustration is that we were not clinical enough in the final third.” Henri Camera tormented the visitors backline as the focal point of United’s attack and Blackwell admitted that the Senegalese striker could emerge as an influential player in the months to come: “He has good awareness and can create something out of nothing but I am aware that we have to tread carefully with him until he becomes fully fit. “My heart is in my mouth when he stays on and starts to tire because I don’t want him to pick up an injury because he could eventually be the missing link we are looking for. “But we have three or four back shortly and hopefully I will be able to rotate the squad and give him a rest when he needs it. “We have Walker, Henderson, Naysmith getting back to fitness, plus Harper, Stewart and Williamson to get fully fit so Blades: Bunn, Montgomery, then we won’t be too shoddy.” Morgan, Kilgallon (Seip 45), Matt Kilgallon was replaced at Evans, Taylor, Cresswell, half-time by new loan signing Ward (Little 87), Geary, Quinn Marcel Seip, a substitution (Williamson 78), Camara. made purely by the fact that Unused: France, Reid, BenKilgallon was carrying the nett, Harper. effects of an injury: “Matt had strained a hamQPR: Cerny, Ramage, Stewstring earlier in the week and art, Leigertwood, Routledge, really wanted to play, but if Buzsaky (Ephraim 71), Agye- he had carried on and suffered mang (Helguson 85), Gorkss, more damage he would have Faurlin, Simpson, Borrowdale. been out for six weeks so I Unused: Hall, Connolly, Balwas looking after him - whether he stays with us or not.” anta, Taylor, Parker.

SEIP’S SOLID START On-loan defender Marcel Seip got his first taste of action for the Blades at the weekend and the Dutchman is hoping for a prosperous stint at the Lane, after joining until the end of the season from Plymouth Argyle. Seip replaced the injured Matt Kilgallon at half-time in United’s FA Cup third round stalemate against QPR and the experienced Championship campaigner is relishing the challenge that awaits: “I was still at Blackpool, just about to leave, when the manager phoned me and I am delighted to have sorted this deal to join a big club. “Plymouth wanted to ship me out again and it was an easy decision to make coming here because of the position and stature of Sheffield United. “I am not that big for a centrehalf, but I do like to use the ball from the back and that helps when you have a lot of good players around you.” Playing alongside Chris Morgan is something the Dutchman is looking forward

to and Seip is sure United will be there or thereabouts in the promotion race come May: “Morgs loves to put in his head in where it hurts and that was proved with the injury he got towards the end. “All the lads here are focused on what this club is trying to achieve and hopefully I can play a part in that. “I am looking to take my chance when I get it then it is up to the manager. “The facilities here are brilliant and I know the atmosphere is pretty special when the ground is full.”

Kevin Blackwell insists that the Blades will still be busting a gut to get to the FA Cup 4th round for a tie at Bolton when they go back to Loftus Road for a replay with QPR: “A draw was the result we didn’t want because the squad is not big enough to handle extra games, but we will give it everything we have got down there in the replay. “We were without Jordan Stewart who has a hamstring injury, and it was too early to risk the likes of Henderson, Naysmith and Williamson but, to be fair to the players, they really got on top in the second-half and overall I was pleased “Passing up chances does concern me but we didn’t play in a negative way at all - Ward, Cresswell, Evans and Camera are all strikers and can score goals, and they all started the game. “It will turn for us in that department because the players needed to convert opportunities are already here. We are in a good run of form and results, and have only lot one game in the last ten, so we are not about to start giving anything up after getting back on track”

A Fan’s Weekly Verdict Written by Jon Warburton Half term report

As the chalk dust settles on the festive period, the half term report makes fairly positive reading for Blades supporters. It is by no means sparkling and there is still a lot to be desired, but as far as the goals and ambitions for this season are concerned, we are just about on course to reach our targets. Kevin Blackwell spoke last season of his theory for staying in touch with the Championship’s high achievers. He insisted that those with serious ambitions of achieving the grade necessary to make the step up to the Premier League should be in touching distance of a play off spot by early January. Then those with serious aspirations of top flight football should have the top two in their sights after the Easter period. Last season, Blackwell’s predicted progress for his Blades team made him seem Richard Cresswell is still fully focused on a run in this season’s like the wisest of scholars as everything he had been talking FA Cup, despite QPR forcing the Blades into a third round about all season came to fruireplay at Loftus Road on Tuestion, as we rose confidently up day week. the table. CRESSY BACKS CHED

“I love playing football and have had some success recently with Stoke so obviously I am looking for that to continue having come here to get promoted again. “This squad has the potential to go up and importantly we have a good blend of youth and experience.”

Verdict: Shows promise but still must do more to fulfill true potential.
