FIM ENDURO WORLD CUP DEBUTS IN SHEFFIELD Elton John will bring his outrageous Las Vegas Show The Red Piano to the Sheffield Arena on Friday 23rd October. The Red Piano show, conceptualised and designed by acclaimed photographer and good friend of Elton, David LaChapelle, has been running at The Colosseum, Caesars Palace, Las Vegas to packed houses since 2004. Sir Elton brought the show to London’s O2 Arena in September 2007, to rave reviews, as part of his 60th birthday celebrations and to mark 40 years of touring. He returned last year to perform in Birmingham, Manchester, Liverpool and a spectacular New Years Eve performance at The O2 in London, broadcast live on ITV. The larger-than-life set, complete with Elton’s iconic Yamaha red grand piano, has been designed to reflect Elton’s flamboyance alongside his peerless musicianship. The theme throughout The Red Piano is love, symbolised by the colour red and articulated through the songs and state-of-the art effects and high-end imagery.
During the show, the audience will be treated to live performances of the phenomenal back catalogue of Elton John and Bernie Taupin, including hits such as Rocket Man, Yellow Brick Road and Candle In The Wind. Elton John said: “It’s fantastic to see how British audiences react to the Red Piano. The show is stuffed with hits, it’s brash, bright and colourful. Over the past five years we have played over 200 Red Piano shows at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas and every single one has been an event – the band and I have had a ball! David LaChapelle said: “The show is a visual extravaganza, a collage of all the outrageous and beautiful images Elton has been responsible for in his career. I just wanted it to sparkle and shine and just be lush almost edible, like looking at a candy store. Elton has had a lot of fun. There have been some sad parts in his life, but when he’s on that stage I think that he loves it. This is a way of showing that love of performing and pay tribute to it”.

FITNESS FANATICS LOOKING TO GO THE EXTRA MILE TO RAISE ‘DOUBLE MONEY’ FOR LOCAL CAUSES FITNESS fanatics are putting in the miles for a fundraising attempt to help local causes and will be able to double their money in the process. The Mount Gym, in Spinkhill, has laid down the gauntlet for people in the area to take part in a ’12 hour distance marathon’, with sponsorship monies raised going to support the work of the South Yorkshire Community Foundation. Through SYCF, all funds raised from the event will be matched pound for pound through the government’s Grassroots Grants programme and create a grant funding pot to secure the long term future of small community groups and projects in the area. Becky Marsh, fitness instructor at the gym, said: “Everyone is really psyched up for what will be a great social event where gym members and those not yet involved with the gym can come together and raise money for their local community. “Knowing that the money raised will be doubled through SYCF’s match funding offer has provided a big incentive for people to get involved with our ‘12 hour distance marathon’.” The event will take place from 7am till 7pm on Saturday, October 24, and will see teams of four clock up as many miles as possible on the treadmill and exercise bike to raise money for SYCF. Becky said: “We chose to
support the South Yorkshire Community Foundation because we decided that rather than focusing on one particular cause we would support a charity that helped people from all walks of life. “This way we know that a whole range of different causes will benefit from the funds that we raise.” The event has already generated plenty of interest, with people coming from as far as London to get involved with the fundraising and one gym member has already secured more than £100 in sponsorship. Pauline Grice, chief executive of SYCF, said: “This is a fantastic idea that is engaging local people who care greatly about their area to raise funds for worthy causes. ‘We support a vast range of activities and projects, from boxing clubs addressing anti-social behaviour issues to old peoples’ lunch clubs addressing social isolation, and from drop-in centres tackling substance misuse to refugee centres working towards social cohesion. “It really does mean a lot to us when people in the area who care about the community that they live in go that extra yard to make a difference for those who need it most.” Those interested in keeping fit and raising money for local causes should contact Becky Marsh on 01246 431990 or e-mail bmarsh@msmcollege. com to get involved.

Sheffield 50+ - The Voice of Older People Heard Nationally INTERGENERATIONAL FISHING MATCH Early on Sunday, 4 October thirty people including pupils from City School, Woodthorpe Development Trust, Sheffield 50+ and staff from SCC’s Aiming High Positive Activities arrived at Aston Park. The reason for getting up so early on a lovely autumn
morning was to take part in a special intergenerational fishing match. Trophies were presented to the winners by Councillor Martin Lawton. Robert Gillatt of Sheffield 50+ said “It was a wonderful day with friendly rivalry – I can’t wait for the next match.”

It is important that patients and carers are involved. You can help by volunteering to join the Clinical Audit Patient Panel (CAPP). You decide how much time you want to volunteer to each project – it can be as much or as little as you can manage.

If you do a search on Google for Malin Bridge Sports and Social Club this is what you get, to the rear of 22 Stannington Rd, Sheffield, S6 5FL, which tells you where it is. What it doesn’t tell you is that this is a gem of club with excellent sporting facilites. I go in there every Thursday and Sunday as this is where Stannington Brass Band have rehearsed for years. The club is known locally as ‘The Gas Club’ as it was formerly the sports and social club for British Gas in Sheffield. When ‘British Gas’ had no further use for it the club was bought by a local property developer and he immediately set about trying to get planning permission for housing. This would have been a disgrace as the club had served the community for many years and there was also the provision of excellent sporting
facilities. Thankfully, and quite correctly, the planning application failed and the future of the club has been secured under a long term lease. Not only are there excellent sporting facilities but there is a good snooker room, a delightful lounge and decent sized function/concert room. The club has also recently been redecorated throughout and the steward keeps one of the best cellars in Sheffield. Pete, our genial host, is worth a write up all of his own. I’ve been going into clubs since 1976 and I have rarely met anyone like him. He obviously knows his business as the pint he serves is unrivalled anywhere in the region and I often ‘pull his leg’. The response I get is, quite frankly, marvellous and if I had the opportunity I’d record them and get them up on Youtube. Al Murray, the ‘Pub Landlord’ has
nothing on this man and he causes a degree of merriment with his responses to my tongue in cheek enquiries for exotic drinks. CLUB AVAILABILITY Another idea I came across while out and about was the letting out of the rooms within the clubs during the daytime. Some areas have lost their community centres /youth clubs etc so one club rents their room out to local mother and toddler groups, OAP dance clubs and in mid week as a youth club disco which I was informed gets busy with the pop and crisps and entrance fees etc .
Dear Sir I called into the Handsworth Social on Saturday night with the intentions of having a look at a chap by the name of ‘Sebella’ or his proper name of Stuart Eden’ entertainer, and finished up stopping for the night. This man from York has been around for a good while and is famed for his adult comedy; not for the faint hearted, not to mention a brilliant singing voice. His act covers every aspect of comedy and he spends most of it walking round the club having one good laugh with the punters, who on this night couldn’t get enough of him. His claim to fame apart from the television work (X Factor etc) js that he was the best comedy act at the prestigious East Midlands Gala command Show 2009. So when he’s at your club ‘don’t miss him, he’s not to be missed’. Good comics like him are few and far between. They had to switch the club lights off to get him off the stage; he’d have stayed on all night and the punters would have let him. One of the best nights at the Social for many a night. Magic!!
Dear Sir I keep reading about the demise of ‘clubland’, price of a pint, smoking ban etc; young people not taking the places of older members; who for different reason can’t get to the club; young people would sooner be cramped in a pub in town paying extortionate prices for a pint. In my view and that of many other older members in my area who sit in the club listening to ‘wannabee’ pop stars’; male and female singing so called pop songs that don’t mean a thing to most people in the club, who prefer to hear the songs from their era. A good artist should be able to sense what the crowd want and should be able to adapt, a few artists who have been around a while can do this, not the young artist nowadays. How many times have I heard the comment “where have you got this turn from?’ ‘It’s what the agent sent us’. Leading me to suggest that the agent should have a good idea as to which artist would suit which club. The agents should have a good look around clubland. How many times have I seen people leaving their club after bingo’s finished saying “I’m off, I don’t want to listen to him or her, don’t know what the songs are about anyway and guess what it will be

ZEENAT - A STAR OF INDIA Do you want to eat ‘EnglishIndian’ food or the real thing? Zeenat, one of Sheffield’s longest established restaurants, now offers diners a superb selection of authentic ‘apna’ dishes. Zeenat has made big changes to it’s menu. I decided to find out why, and sample the new dishes, writes David Hayes. The Attercliffe restaurant has been serving Indian food to Sheffielders for nearly 30 years, so why meddle with what has obviously been a successful recipe? As my co-investigator I took along a curry expert. The decor in Zeenat is Early Bollywood - rich red tones and flickering candlelight. Greeted by the restaurant manager Faiz Mohammed, who showed us to a very nice table. Not being a big lover of beer, although the Zeenat has an extensive selection of both bottle and draught, I selected from the wine list. A bottle of Chilean Sauvignon blanc at only £11.50, very refreshing with a nice chilled crisp taste. The new banner outside the Zeenat displayed a now serving ‘Apna Style Food’ which is a Punjabi word and roughly translates as ‘Our Own’ The Zeenat proudly boasts authentic Indian cooking, rather than the toned down dishes many other Asian restaurants offer. Apna food offers strong authentic flavours, meat on the bone full of strong spices which really tantalises the taste buds. The extensive menu still offers many of the traditional Indian style meals including Madras,
Kormas and Vindaloo’s but they are listed as chef specials. The majority of the menu proudly displays a colourful array of the Apna dishes. For an appetiser we shared two plain poppadoms and a tray of mixed pickles, including Lime chutney, mango chutney, and a fantastic tomato based chutney that Faiz informed us was Zeenat’s “apna” - it’s own secret recipe. Poppadoms done, we shared a special tandoori mix starter (£3.50): spicy-lamb sheek kebab with chunks of lamb and buttery chicken tikka. The dish was fantastic: robust flavours and tasty marinades. For main course we chose Salunay rice from the apna menu (a spicy alternative to pilau rice), I opted for balti ghost with lamb tikka (£8.50). It definitely looked different from the curries i’m used to: less greasy, and more colourful - deep, rich red. The menu described it as having a mouth-watering taste, and it certainly did not disappoint. The lamb was fall-apart-inthe-mouth tender, and the sauce was packed with simmered herbs and spices. Curry Expert said his apna on the bone lamb chop larahi (£8.50) was one of the best curries he had ever
tasted, which was quite a compliment coming from someone who eats Indian food as often as he does. Faiz now suggested we try a traditional apna desert called zahda, which is the Indian equivalent of rice pudding. It rounded off perfectly an evening of exciting new tastes. Faiz says once Indian-food lovers have eaten apna-style, they never go back. On the evidence of our evening at Zeenat both of us are inclined to agree. ZEENAT HAS LAUNCHED a weekend specials menu. For £10.50 you can try and traditional apna dish, plus dessert. The specials available rotate through the whole apna menu, so if you visit Zeenat regular you will taste them all.

Food and service is of a good consistent standard and the prices are reasonable too. There are a few unusual dishes on the menu, which add a touch of interest if you feel adventurous, but all the usual dishes are there too, including a good range of vegetarian options. A plus point is that the chefs are accommodating enough to cope with cooking meals to your preference if you ask. Its been a steady run-of-the-mill week at Radio Nightingale this week, everything went to plan and nothing out of the ordinary happened. The words storm, before and lull spring to mind! We had Steelers commentary on Saturday night, the slight technical hitch of the previous week a distant memory as the commentary team pulled off their best show yet. Unfortunately we don’t seem to be bringing the same improvements to the Steelers performance as again they were defeated at the Sheffield Arena. We continue to search for new volunteers who can bring something to the Nightingale team. If you’ve ever listened to the radio and thought it sounded easy and fancied a go, do get in touch with us. Its not as easy as it sounds but we can train (almost) anyone to present a programme. We’re really keen to hear from people who have a musical specialist subject which can be used as a theme for a programme, e.g. swing, brass, motown, etc. There is also a vacancy coming available shortly on a Sunday morning to present a programme surrounding the live relay of the hospital chapel Holy Communion Service. For this programme you’d ideally have a knowledge of religious music and be available weekly Sundays from 10am-12pm.If presenting sounds a bit too technical or terrifying, then we have a variety of other tasks which don’t involve talking on the radio. Most of them do involve computers, but not all. Some are just about talking to patients, visiting people at their bedside to collect requests and feedback about the service. There’s admin jobs, making jingles, looking after the library of CD’s, even cleaning and tea-mashing!
