Ravenclaw: Ended 6-Year Drought, Snatches Grand CPC Cup

Out of the four houses from JONELTA Foundation School of Magic, the house of Ravenclaw from the local program grabbed its first win as it emerged as the new reigning team after beating the houses of Gryffindor from the same program and Hufflepuff and Slytherin from the international programs in the two-part sixth Annual Grand Clinicopathologic Conference (CPC) last February 12 and May 1, 2021. Both parts were held online and broadcasted via YouTube to cater not only the JFSM community but other audiences around the world. The event was hosted by Dr. Iftizar Haron and Dr. Jennifer Mateo.

Part 1 of the 6th Annual Grand CPC The program started with University President Anthony Tamayo’s inspiring video message that encouraged students to fully accept the challenges brought by online classes and use these opportunities to grow and be more productive in using educational online platforms provided and prepared by the university. Dr. Arnaldo de Guzman, school director, encouraged the medical students to actively participate in this first online Grand CPC despite the major changes in the educational landscape.
Dr. David Olveda, assistant chair for the Department of Pathology, gave his welcome remarks. He stated, “Medicine is the branch of science that gives us hope so we can cure disease, alleviate people’s suffering and improve their lives for the better, by relying on reason, evidence and compassion.”
Dr. Haron introduced the panel of judges composed of Dr. Bernadette Espiritu, Dr. Jericho Cordero, Dr. Gito Devy, and Dr. Reynaldo Alipio. She also provided the criteria for judging and case presentation guidelines.
The competition began with 12-minute video presentations from each house, followed by the question-and-answer portion facilitated by the assigned judges for each house. The multiple-choice questions (MCQs) portion ended the team evaluation. All of the rounds were pre-recorded before the broadcast of the competition.
Towards the end, Dr. Servillano Ritualo III, chair and coordinator of the Department of Pathology, discussed the results of the autopsy of a neonate who suddenly died three minutes after birth. The pediatric case was part of his personal collection of post mortem cases back when he working for the United Nations Peace Keeping Operations, World Bank Health Reconstruction Program and Italian Cooperation Program from year 2005 to 2014.
Ravenclaw rose as the winner for the first installment of the Grand CPC, garnering a total score of 83.3% and engaging into a close fight against Gryffindor which earned a score of 83.0% and ranked first runner up. Slytherin placed as the 2nd runner up while Hufflepuff as the 3rd runner up.
The presenters from the house of Ravenclaw were Jan Christian Alonzo, Kim Martina Cerna, Brando Miguel Capuno, Michael Tari Najar and Conrad Alfred Reyes. The house leader of Ravenclaw for the first part was Neilmar Umali. They were mentored by Dr David Olveda from Department of Pathology.
The closing remarks was provided by the college Dean, Dr Emelita Gatmaitan.
Part 2 of the 6th Annual Grand CPC The second part and final sequel of the Grand CPC commenced as the assistant chair Dr. David Olveda gave his welcome remarks.
Dr. Iftizar Haron and Dr. Jennifer Mateo introduced the panel of judges comprised of Dr. Ana Rose Cariaga-Alvarado, Dr. Jericho Cordero, Dr. Nathalie Tumang, and Dr. Leonisa Santos-Sagun. Dr. Haron gave the criteria for judging while Dr. Mateo explained the case presentation guidelines.
As with the first part, the assessment for the second part started with 12-minute video presentations from each house showcasing their creativity and talents in presenting the case and resolving it with their differential diagnoses and pathophysiology. It was followed by the question-and-answer portion facilitated by the assigned judges for each house. The multiple-choice questions (MCQs) portion ended the team evaluation. All of the rounds were pre-recorded before the broadcast of the competition.
Dr. Haron introduced the guest speaker for the event, Dr. Bienvenido Jose Tianco. He shared his expertise about peri-procedural death reporting and its medico-legal aspect.
The chairman and coordinator Dr. Servillano Ritualo III discussed the results of the autopsy of a woman who died due to uterine atony leading to hemorrhage causing the demise of the patient on the operating table. The obstetric case was the sequel of the pediatric case in the first part of the Grand CPC.
The house of Ravenclaw emerged as winner of the second installment of the Grand CPC and hailed as the overall champion with a score of 83.38%, followed by Slytherin as the first runner up, Gryffindor as the 2nd runner up, and Hufflepuff as the 3rd runner up.
The house of Ravenclaw was mentored by Dr. David Olveda from Department of Pathology and Dr. Rodolfo Pascual Jr. from the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology.
The presenters from the house of Ravenclaw were Kylie Bangalan, Jocel Andee Bejoc, Jillian Bettina Buot, Mariam Erika Jacob, Jessa Andrea Naringahon. The house leader of Ravenclaw for the second part was John Calvin Clemente.
The said win for the house of Ravenclaw was the first time since the birth of Grand CPC in 2016.
