It is awards season in Southern California and the themed entertainment industry’s TEA Thea Awards ceremony has taken its rightful place in the distinguished lineup. I would like to welcome all of you to TEA’s 25th annual celebration of excellence in themed entertainment. Our association has been honoring achievement, talent and personal excellence in our industry for a quarter of a century now, showcasing the best of the international creative community that TEA represents. The TEA Thea Awards span the globe and reflect the innovation, development and expansion current in our industry. Of the 18 extraordinary people and projects receiving awards at the 2019 TEA Thea Awards Gala, six are in the Asia Pacific region and four are in Europe (including the first ever from Poland). They are also extremely diverse in nature, including museums, a cruise line, two National Parks, theme parks, attractions, a parade, a water park, and technology. Congratulations to all of you! Special congratulations go out to this year’s Buzz Price Thea Award recipient, Mark Woodbury, recognizing his lifetime of distinguished achievements; Dollywood, receiving our Thea Classic Award; and Michel Linet-Frion, recipient of the TEA Peter Chernack Distinguished Service Award. Special thanks to Chimelong Group for reprising its role as Presenting Sponsor of the TEA Thea Awards Gala this year. We are honored to continue the relationship between TEA and Chimelong. The prestigious TEA Thea Awards are one of the primary ways in which TEA serves its membership and the industry. The Thea Awards have been around nearly as long as our association (TEA was founded in 1991; the first Thea Awards Gala was in 1994) providing a way to annually showcase the vision, creativity, and skills of the teams that develop award winning projects.

In 2018, TEA introduced a complementary program, TEA Masters, to honor individuals whose body of work has made a significant contribution to the growth and development of our industry through their innovation, design, craftsmanship and artistry. Seven inaugural TEA Masters were recognized last October in conjunction with the TEA SATE conference in Orlando, and an annual slate of inductees will be added to this group in the future. This is an exciting time for our association and for the themed entertainment industry as a whole. Over the past five years our organization’s success has accelerated on multiple levels, from the size of our membership to the number of events we produce in all regions and the amount of attendees at those events, from the outreach of the TEA NextGen initiative to the degree of interest our members show in serving TEA. TEA’s current success is due to a collaborative effort involving the support and dedication of members, sponsors, TEA leadership, volunteers and staff. That success has put TEA in a position where it can focus on planning for the future with confidence. Our International Board of Directors developed a new, three-year Strategic Plan that will focus our efforts on who, what, and where we want to be in the years to come. This effort will help all of our members, by targeting global growth, leveraging our educational programs and strengthening the brand of TEA around the world. We hope you’ll join us for the journey ahead into the future of TEA and the global community we represent. The outlook is bright. Thanks to all of you!

History of the Thea Awards

in technology, social behavior and connectivity are reinventing our notion of storytelling and immersion.

The establishment of the TEA Thea Awards as the preeminent award program recognizing excellence in Themed Entertainment projects was seminal to the recognition of Themed Entertainment as a professional industry. The Theas shine a bright light on the industry and its leaders, fabricators and creative geniuses who make Themed Entertainment magic. -- Themed Entertainment Association (TEA) founder Monty Lunde,Technifex

As our industry has expanded globally, the Thea Awards have recognized this and the geographic coverage of the awards has grown accordingly. It should also be noted that the Thea Awards are not by any means confined to theme parks. Museums and museum exhibitions, heritage centers, casinos, multimedia spectaculars, brand experiences, theatrical productions and many other types of attractions and guest experiences fall into the realm of projects that can be eligible for Thea Awards.

TEA created the Thea Awards to bring recognition to achievement, talent and excellence within the themed entertainment industry. The Thea Awards began in 1994 with a single Lifetime Achievement Award, and the first honoree was Harrison “Buzz” Price, a pioneer in entertainment feasibility. Monty Lunde, Bob Rogers, Pat Scanlon and Barry Howard were on the first Thea Awards organizational and judging committee. The Thea Awards were named in reference to three words: • “Thea” - the Greek goddess from whom all light emanates • “Theater” - derived from the goddess Thea • “TEA” - the acronym referring to our Association The original Thea trophies were designed by Barry Howard and Jeremy Railton. The current Thea trophy debuted in 2001 and was designed by Zofia Kostryko. The first year’s ceremony, held at the Biltmore Hotel in downtown Los Angeles, was produced by Ron Miziker, and coordinated by Jana Love, with TEA founder Monty Lunde serving as master of ceremonies. The 1995 Thea Awards also took place at the Biltmore, again with a single honoree: the late Marty Sklar (an official Disney Legend, Marty). After Buzz Price passed away in 2010, TEA renamed the Thea Lifetime Achievement Award in his honor. It is now called the Buzz Price Thea Award Recognizing a Lifetime of Distinguished Achievements. The third year (1996) saw the introduction of Awards for Outstanding Achievement (AOA). Ten AOAs were bestowed. The Thea Classic category was created in 1997. It can be given to one achievement per year that has stood the test of time. Also in 1997, the AOA category of Excellence on a Limited Budget was created, to celebrate outstanding achievements under $10 million. For 2014-2015, new Wizarding World of Harry Potter attractions at Universal Studios prompted the Thea Awards Committee to create the Paragon Award, which recognizes a project that sets a new bar of excellence. In 2017, several Thea recipients first represented the newly created category of Connected Immersion, recognizing that tremendous advances

14

The TEA Peter Chernack Distinguished Service Award is also presented at the TEA Thea Awards Gala. This award was created and is decided by the TEA Past Presidents Committee, and was renamed in honor of the late Peter Chernack, a past president of TEA who was instrumental in conceiving this award. The culture of the Thea Awards is unique. Here are some key characteristics: • Honoree: the project itself – Thea AOA and Thea Classic awards honor the entire achievement. The trophy is awarded to the project owner. • Official project credits – The project owner is obliged to furnish a comprehensive credits list for publication by TEA. In this way the Thea Awards have resulted in the first official project credits of the themed entertainment industry. • Trophies for the team – Individuals and companies named on the official credits list of a Thea-honored project are entitled to obtain their own trophies from TEA. • No set categories – The TEA is free to honor several achievements in the same category, create a new category, or to skip categories as the year’s achievements warrant. • No secrets – Award recipients are openly announced in November, and the awards are formally presented the following spring at the Thea Awards Gala. • Open nominations – Anyone can nominate a project for a Thea Award. It is not necessary to be a TEA member. You can nominate your own project. The objective is simple: To find excellence and celebrate it. As we look to the future, the Thea Awards will continue to grow and evolve, while continuing to honor the original objective of bringing recognition to achievement, talent and professional excellence within our themed entertainment industry.

25th Anniversary Gallery: The TEA Thea Classic Award The first TEA Thea Classic Award was given in 1997 at the fourth annual Thea Awards Gala, to Pirates of the Caribbean, Disneyland Resort, Anaheim CA USA. The Thea Classic Award honors an outstanding “compelling place and experience” achievement from the past, which set new standards and which has stood the test of time. “Test of time,” while not a hard and fast rule, is generally understood by the TEA Thea Awards Committee to mean a minimum of 20 years in operation. The achievement or attraction must still be in existence, use or operation.

Bazyliszek

— Park Legendia, Chorzow, Poland

Thea Award For Outstanding Achievement - Attraction, Limited Budget

This unique attraction introduces interactive, darkride storytelling to an emerging theme park market (Poland) and builds on a unique and local cultural context. Bazyliszek uses modern storytelling tools and immersive environments to explore the myth of the Basilisk – a reptilian monster, part serpent/part rooster with magical powers and a deadly glance. In the Monster Hunters Guild mansion, in the Magical Forest zone of the park, guests are enlisted to go to the village of Kurkowo, battle the Basilisk and free the village. The queue experience is a walk through the Guild Hall, Hall of Fame, Research area, Weapons room, and finally a Briefing room where guests are asked to help in the hunt by Flora, a Monster Hunter herself. Guests board Monster Hunter vehicles and use shooting devices in a fierce and fun battle to disarm carnivorous plants, find the Basilisk and defeat it.

26

The attraction uses a full range of tools to deliver this story and experience: targets are in the media on screens that are integrated in show sets, as well as on moving show action elements, and into black lighted sets. The media extends the show sets, and elegantly continues the story and the village, and bring the characters to life in a fun, energetic way. Despite its limited means, the attraction is a complete story with a full queue, preshow, video presentation, dedicated load, interactive ride across multiple scenes where theming bridges well across gaps, and even includes scores shown in a guild book at the end. Using a Polish myth as a basis for its story is a great match for its audience. Delivering an attraction that is well integrated in its cultural context, but that manages to deliver a compelling modern and fun experience is not only remarkable, it is also a great alternative to major IP offerings. Bazyliszek is an outstanding model of an attraction that speaks to its regional audience. It is wellexecuted, elegant, engaging, colorful, fun and fresh.

Be Washington: It’s Your Turn to Lead George Washington’s Mount Vernon, Mount Vernon, VA, USA

Thea Award For Outstanding Achievement - Museum Experience, Limited Budget

In this new first-person, interactive experience, visitors face crises that Washington faced in his presidency (four possible scenarios), hear from advisors and choose a course of action while on the clock, then learn how Washington himself acted. In a period-looking space equipped with state-ofthe-art gaming kiosks, actor Chris Jackson (George Washington in “Hamilton”) appears on screen to introduce the topics. The room design, inspired by Congress Hall in Philadelphia, contains 18 two-person kiosks. Theatrical windows on the left and right of the theater change in color to suit the topic and mood of the scenario. While based on primary, 18th-century source material, the first-person approach, interactive elements, rich 6K media presentation, and time-pressured gameplay are all designed to appeal to millennials and Gen Z participants – guests with very different media expectations than previous generations.

30

Some distinguishing attributes: • Gamification meets edutainment meets Theater! • Engaging, entertaining and highly educational! • Individual or group/network mode • Can be deployed in classrooms anywhere • Web version leverages the same media and gameplay as the theater version In addition to welcoming everyday guests, the “Be Washington” theater can be used to host education, leadership, corporate, and governmental groups for custom facilitated sessions with Mount Vernon experts. The large 6K screen includes a picture-in-picture capability that allows the facilitator to present additional information to further flesh out the topic and facilitate discussion. “Be Washington” is an excellent example of bringing historical education to life in a present-time environment.

Nemo & Friends SeaRider Tokyo DisneySea, Japan

Thea Award For Outstanding Achievement - Repurposed Attraction

This immersive ride experience is based on the Disney/ Pixar films Finding Nemo and Finding Dory. Guests board a “SeaRider” submarine which shrinks to the size of a fish. The video interactions with the spectators showcase the beloved characters Nemo and Dory and many of the other popular characters from Finding Dory including Destiny, the whale shark, and Hank, the octopus. Each of the two theaters utilizes the same motion simulator system as its predecessor, StormRider, which includes a combination of motion and visual effects. In addition to the all-new story and media are a new exterior theater façade, a new preshow and a more refined immersion experience inside the simulators.

42

Even without 3D glasses or a complex theater, the team found the perfect balance of elements to make this a charming and exciting ride for the whole family. Each experience is unique, composed live with more than 576 different video clips that create different storylines for each ride. The attraction is beautifully executed and subtly transformed; it does not feel like a repurposed ride. The immersion effect composed of video and motion is perfectly balanced, providing the guests with a feeling of riding in the water and plenty of surprises and action to entertain. Nemo & Friends SeaRider is a beautiful example of taking a good attraction and making it even better.

Legend of Camel Bells Huaxia Cultural Tourism Resort, Xi’an, Shanxi Province, China

Thea Award For Outstanding Achievement - Live Show Spectacular

This live spectacular is Chinese legendary epic storytelling, of travelers on the Silk Road crossing China all the way to ancient Rome during the Tang Dynasty (618-907) encountering extreme weather, lifethreatening dangers, and fantastic sights. Legend of Camel Bells wows the audience with stunning stage effects, massive props, extreme scenery, a huge cast, animal actors, a 15-meter-tall volcano and snow mountain, 18-meter-high Buddha and 20-meterhigh by 40-meter-wide waterfall - all dramatically presented on the massive, oval-shaped stage, backed by a 4,000 square meter LED screen. The adventure is continuous as the 3,000-person, raked audience platform rotates seamlessly from scene-to-

50

scene. Not only does the platform rotate, it tracks back and forth from the action to provide a more intimate or larger stage area as required for the scene. This is China – where audiences love big spectacles, big stories – and where, due to sheer population numbers, themed entertainment must be on a grand scale. The Legend of Camel Bells represents the highest level of visual imagination and design in its execution. It immerses and involves its audiences and is executed with theatrical flair and showmanship. The enormous scale makes it the largest show in Northwest China (and in most parts of the world!)

ILLUMINATIONS: human/nature Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity, Banff National Park, Alberta, Canada & Rouge Urban National Park, Toronto, Canada

Thea Award For Outstanding Achievement – Connected Immersion – Digital Overlay Experience, Limited Budget

This creative collaboration is a magical, nighttime, digital discovery experience. The experience was offered and tailored to two different national parks. These parks have a rich history to explore – not just geology, but also the ecological impacts that have created what surrounds guests today. The team wanted to make these narratives visible without impacting the environment, but also wanted to demonstrate how their multiplicity and continuity shapes the landscapes and wildlife ecosystems. In this case, the show equipment (gear) used both revealed the story and became a metaphor for the story. The team sought a ‘leave no trace’ approach and the entire operation was designed to be battery-powered and portable.

54

The experience starts at night, with guests exploring in teams. They have been outfitted with multimedia tools disguised as camping gear, that activate along the way to illustrate story points, trigger video, special effects, music and voiceover, revealing wildlife and history within the parks. From salmon swimming up the Rouge River to a submerged town of Lake Minnewanka, each moment is a combination of multimedia effects and encouraging audience participation to work together to bring these stories to life. Illuminations: human/nature leverages the magic and storytelling impact of the digital tools of our industry while being respectful and aware that the majesty of our national parks and environment must be preserved. It invites participants to consider the real lack of boundaries between humans and wild nature.

Official Credits List - ILLUMINATIONS: human/nature Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity celebrated the histories that have shaped Canada by commissioning a participative artwork experience titled ILLUMINATIONS: human/ nature, created by contemporary visual artist Sarah Fuller and Montréal multimedia studio Moment Factory and presented in both official languages of Canada, French and English. The innovative immersive event took place in two locations for three nights each: • Treaty 7 Territory in Banff National Park, Canada’s first national park and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, at Lake Minnewanka from October 5-7, 2017. • The traditional territories of 10 first nations in Rouge National Urban Park, Canada’s first urban national park in the Greater Toronto Area, from October 19-21, 2017. From deep time to the present, ILLUMINATIONS: human/nature shined a spotlight on the landscape, people, and heritage of Canada by weaving together the unseen narratives of the human and the natural in both national parks – from their geological formation, ecology and biodiversity, to Indigenous and colonial settler history, as well as conservation. Through storytelling, projection, and technology, ILLUMINATIONS: human/nature re-imagined nature without boundaries and the future of wild spaces in a fully engaged experience that uncovered the unseen narratives of each site. In small groups, visitors were equipped with a portable toolkit that led them on a journey in each park at night. The journey culminated in a multimedia campfire experience that brought the smaller groups together as a community. All visitors received a field guide which provided detailed information about each site based on the pre-event research that we undertook. We acknowledge that Banff National Park and Lake Minnewanka is located on Treaty 7 Territory, the traditional land of the Stoney Nakoda, Blackfoot and Tsuut’ina Nations.

Universal Spectacle Night Parade Universal Studios Japan, Osaka, Japan

Thea Award For Outstanding Achievement - Live Show Spectacular

Theme parks have, over the decades, explored ways to expand upon the nighttime parade spectacular and Universal Studios Japan has dramatically reinvented the stage on which their nightly pageant performs. The memorable characters, settings and music from Harry Potter, Transformers, Jurassic World and Despicable Me “Minions” provide the basic foundation for this achievement. Universal’s goal was to immerse guests in an experience rather than merely have them view it from the sidelines. As each scene winds its way down the parade route, elaborate yet subtle background settings transform environments all around into carefully extended worlds in which the characters and props passing through inhabit and reside - from prehistoric worlds and science fiction, to live action fantasy and cartoon towns.

60

The stories come to life in a multitude of ways. Characters move on and off the moving set pieces. Animatronic and costumed characters make fantastic beings real; while supporting filmed characters appear within the mapped background environments. The movements of a large cast of live performers align with the projection and technical elements. A new parade control system had to be invented to synchronize onboard and off-board projection mapping with the progressive movement of parade units, choreographed to a musical score. With absolute precision, the massive, virtual environments synchronize with puppeteered creatures and live performance to achieve near-total guest immersion with characters, settings and music. The result really does let guests “live the movies.”

Michel Linet-Frion TEA Peter Chernack Distinguished Service Award

by Gene Jeffers The TEA Peter Chernack Distinguished Service Award is presented annually at the TEA Thea Awards Gala, in recognition of a TEA member’s outstanding contributions “above and beyond the call of duty” to the Association. Nominations are open to the TEA membership; the final selection of the recipient is made by majority vote of the TEA Past Presidents Committee and approved by the TEA International Board of Directors. The late Peter Chernack, a Past President of TEA, was instrumental in creating the award. Take a pinch of Verne, a sip of Champlain, a splash of Cousteau and a dash of Debord, mix well and throw in a welcoming smile and an always helping hand. Voila! You have one Michel Linet-Frion, architect, experience designer and recipient of this year’s Peter Chernack Distinguished Service Award. Ever since Nick Farmer (Past President of the TEA International Board of Directors) introduced him to the TEA in 1999, Michel, who is based in France, has dedicated himself to improving the association and growing its membership. The TEA Service Award recognizes exceptional service to the association, and Michel’s strong history of TEA leadership and service includes a stint on the TEA International Board and multiple terms on the TEA Europe and Middle East Division Board (EME). He is currently serving a term on the latter, with a particular focus on the role that TEA should play in the EME regions. He is passionate about TEA’s continued development across global markets becoming, as he says, “as pertinent as possible so as to become unavoidable!” No stranger to the TEA Thea Awards, Michel has major credits on four award recipients, Space Mountain in Disneyland Paris, L’Oxygenarium in Parc Asterix, Les Mysteres de la Mer at the Grand Aquarium of St. Malo, and Center Parcs’ Bois aux Daims Eco Resort. He has participated in the TEA Thea Awards Committee, where his advocacy helped facilitate increased review and selection opportunities for projects in Europe, the Middle East and Asia. After key posts with Walt Disney Imagineering and Parc Asterix/Grevin & Cie., Michel now serves as Creative &

68

Innovation Director for Pierre & Vacances/Center Parcs, a French leisure and real estate group. In that role, he finds his volunteer efforts and contacts within the TEA to be both personally and professionally rewarding. His work brief, as he sees it, is to develop Center Parcs’ current and future sites, to ensure they are attractive and innovative, to ensure they remain competitive and distinctive leisure choices within an increasingly competitive sector. As a creative force who has worked within large corporate owner/operator organizations for 30 years, Michel has brought and continues to bring a unique and valuable perspective to his role within TEA. “Today’s guests have evolved, becoming more and more used to theming,” Michel says. “Design teams must double down, strive harder to achieve a kind of verisimilitude that will bring out both the drama of the story and the authenticity of the experience.”

Michel fundamentally understands the value of the TEA and its highly qualified membership to his own work and to the industry as a whole. Since joining the association 20 years ago, Michel has been instrumental in helping to generate networking Michel celebrates with and educational events, colleague Bruno Guth after a especially within the CenterParcs project received EME region. He assisted a Thea Award in 2017 with the first TEA SATE conferences in Europe and has presented on a wide range of topics at events of TEA and other industry groups. And always, he is the quintessential TEA ambassador, recruiting, cultivating, ensuring that the value, reputation and reach of the ever-expanding organization continue to improve. Michel is deeply grateful for the support of his wife Valerie, daughters Fleur and Stella, and son Tim and to the hundreds of TEA volunteers who make the

70

association possible. “This award is only possible because of all of you,” he said. “Thank you.” Following his retirement several years ago as TEA Executive Director, Gene Jeffers is currently serving as Board chair for the San Gabriel Pomona Valley Chapter of the American Red Cross and is a Board Member of the Historical Novel Society. He was recently invited to and attended the Tucson Literary Festival’s Master Class; is writing an historical novel and a series of short memoirs about growing up in the Congo; and is drafting a research article based on a survey he conducted about perceived success factor differences between theme park designers/builders and theme park operators worldwide. Gene and his wife, Carol (also a writer) travel often, and enjoy their two daughters and three grandchildren. More at www.OurWriteHouse.com.

JUSTICE LEAGUE™: Battle for Metropolis Six Flags Magic Mountain, Valencia, CA, USA

Thea Award For Outstanding Achievement - Attraction

This story-driven adventure for guests of all ages blends dimensional and animated sets, animatronics, 3D video, special effects, projection mapping, laser stun-blasters, interactive targets, a scoring system, a musical score and more aboard custom motion vehicles. Narrative-based, full immersion storytelling is an impressive new direction within a park system better known for iron rides - while staying true to the Six Flags brand. Participants are plunged into convincing illusions simulating the dynamic movements emblematic of other Six Flags attractions, including a vertical loop, a corkscrew inversion and other thrill movements. These are cleverly achieved without the need for height restrictions. Thus, the experience can be safely shared with everyone from younger siblings to grandparents.

74

Continuous improvement is how it ought to be. While this Thea Award honors the installation at Six Flags Magic Mountain, with the JUSTICE LEAGUE™ attraction in seven parks since 2015, Six Flags and their team have achieved a commendable, constant trend of artistic and technical improvements and set an example for the industry. With each installation it gets better, artistically and technically - raising the bar in all aspects, all while staying within a business model and cost structure appropriate to the park’s attendance and market. And the result is both a documented crowd pleaser and attendance driver. Shouldn’t it always be this way? This is the TEA’s opportunity to reward what we would like to see at every economic level of our industry.

Intel® Shooting Star™ drone Thea Award For Outstanding Achievement - Outstanding Technical Innovation

Developed by Intel’s Drone Group, the technology for the unique Shooting Star Drone System is an innovative design and engineering solution for aerial light shows. This drone mass flight system (for both indoor and outdoor shows) is controlled by one computer and one operator. This technology is inclusive of both the unique Shooting Star Drone and the software and technology necessary to control the complexity of mass drone flight with precise, reliable and safe control and choreography of extremely large numbers of drones.

78

Each Shooting Star Drone is exceedingly lightweight (300 grams); each provides a moving point of brilliant light with virtually infinite colors (more than 4 billion color combinations from built-in LEDs). With the software and animation interface of the system, a light show can be easily created in a remarkably short time. Intel’s proprietary algorithms automate the animation creation process by using a reference image, quickly calculating the number of drones needed, determining where each drone should be placed and formulating the fastest path to create an image in the sky. Employed in the PyeongChang 2018 Winter Olympic Opening Ceremony, 1,218 drones set a new Guinness World Record for most drones flown simultaneously.

The Evel Knievel Museum Topeka, KS, USA

Thea Award For Outstanding Achievement - Museum, Limited Budget

With his famous motorcycle stunts and jumps, Evel Knievel entertained kids and adults throughout the late 1960s and into the 1970s. This museum is a sincere, respectful tribute to Knievel’s high-adrenaline career, fearlessness and humor, and the love that people still hold for him. It is created with great respect for Knievel’s fearlessness and an appreciation for the humor he brought to his stunts, which were always clever, clearly dangerous, and compelling to watch. The museum is a two-story building in Topeka, Kansas which sits underneath the Historic Harley Davidson, just south of the Kansas Expocenter. The first floor offers an historic timeline and a collection with many of his unique cycles, fancy leathers, a movie theater and the lovingly restored “Big Red” Mack truck Evel used to transport his show.

84

The second floor features a virtual reality stunt-jump over 15 police cars, and the famous Skycycle X-2 Steam Powered rocket in which Knievel attempted to jump Snake River Canyon. Also displayed are many of his custom cycles, fancy leathers and a plethora of famous and sought-after merchandise. There are memorabilia and posters from his different shows, interactive displays and a theater showing his movies, such as “Viva Knievel.” The TEA Thea Awards Committee gives The Evel Knievel Museum high marks for creative staging and production, unique storytelling and great guest experience for all ages.

MORI Building DIGITAL ART MUSEUM: teamLab Borderless - Tokyo, Japan Thea Award For Outstanding Achievement - Connected Immersion – Digital Art

Japan’s famous art collective teamLab, in collaboration with local urban landscape developer MORI Building Co. Ltd. created this permanent experience showcasing more than 50 interactive digital artworks in 5 different zones over 100,0000 square feet, and already a ‘mustsee’ attraction for anyone visiting Japan. The museum is designed for people of all ages and cultures. The experience is beautiful and accessible to guests, whether tech-savvy, digital art lovers or new to digital art. The main objective is to create interactions between guests (jumping, climbing, touching, etc.) with a sense of total immersion. The playfulness of many of the exhibits removes the ‘seriousness’ of the ‘digital art’ and encourages these interactions, helping to bring out the ‘child’ in everyone,’ catalyzing moments of fun and joy.

86

This exhibit is a great example of a well-balanced and structured, totally immersive experience, without complex instructions or recent technologies (no wearables, motion theaters, VR, AR, or 3D glasses). The simple, yet innovative combination of analog interactive installations and advanced projection mapping visuals equals a world-class, non-linear entertainment experience that allows visitors to explore, wander and discover at their own pace. It maintains a ‘Japanese’ touch with many local culture and nature references, for example, the interactive Tea Ceremony room. The level of technical complexity (520 computers / 470 video projectors / interactive sensors / etc.) and the overall quality of the experience, make ‘Borderless’ a new reference point and potentially a game-changer in the industry.

Fantastic Journey Majestic Princess, Princess Cruises, Valencia, CA USA

Thea Award For Outstanding Achievement - Live Show Spectacular, Limited Budget

Fantastic Journey sets a new standard in cruise ship entertainment by the creation of an epic concert of exceptional proportions and production values aboard the Majestic Princess, which was purpose-built for the Chinese guest market. It combines the best of leadingedge entertainment technology: LED and projection mapping, programmable costumes and scenery, immersive audio and lighting design, and a unique, autonomous indoor drone show. It reflects Princess Cruises’ in-depth understanding of their market’s tastes, style, and preferences, combined with a high sensitivity to the need for best-in-class leisure experiences. A theater at sea has special maintenance needs. In the case of Fantastic Journey, the ever-changeable ocean

94

means that each show (and constantly throughout each show) the flight of carefully choreographed lightsource drones must be monitored and adjusted. That’s what happens in the astonishing complex performance of “Rise” midway through the evening. And this jawdropping number is just one in an evening of awesome live entertainment and outstanding spectacle. After a build-out in Montefalcone, Italy, the Majestic Princess set out on her maiden shake-down cruise to various Mediterranean ports and headed on to Shanghai while on-board, the production team assembled by Princess Cruises set up, tested and rehearsed the show. The premiere of Fantastic Journey in Spring 2017 was, of course, nothing short of fantastic.

Volcano Bay Universal Orlando Resort, Orlando, FL USA

Thea Award For Outstanding Achievement - Water Theme Park

Volcano Bay is the third theme park to open within the Universal Orlando Resort. This Polynesian-inspired, water-themed park consists of four distinct villages, 18 attractions, six restaurants, retail, real sand beaches and the 200-foot-tall Krakatau Volcano. Guests can enjoy all Volcano Bay has to offer without standing in lines or carrying personal flotation devices, thanks to the revolutionary Tapu Tapu bracelets. The entire park beckons with the promise of escape, relaxation and adventure and lives up to the belief that ‘Water is Life and Life is Joy.’ Once inside, guests are transported to a quintessential tropical island paradise that’s every bit as exciting or serene as they wish. Guests can float along the Kopiko Wai Winding River,

98

play in the waves of Waturi Beach, ride the Krakatau Aqua Coaster and experience a 125-plunge speed slide, racing slides, body slides and the TeAwa raft ride. Islandinspired dining and shopping are featured in the park. The revolutionary Tapu Tapu bracelets entitle guests to all privileges and conveniences of the island including: virtual queueing, cashless transactions for lockers and cabanas, to view and purchase photos captured throughout the day and enjoy dining and retail, all with just a tap of the wrist. They can even use Tapu Tapu to unlock some island magic all around the park. Volcano Bay truly merges a water park and a theme park into something representative of the high standards of our industry, and raises the bar for water parks in general.

The Buzz Price Thea Award – Recognizing a Lifetime of Distinguished Achievements

The Buzz Price Thea Award is a tremendous honor for anyone to receive, and we at Universal Creative couldn’t be more proud to have it bestowed upon our inspirational leader and creative visionary, Mark Woodbury. Mark’s career with Universal Creative and Universal Parks & Resorts is certainly one worth honoring and celebrating, though he is quick to remind you that you’ll be “stuck with him” for many more years. In his 30 years with the company, he has created lasting memories for all of the guests who experience the products of his vision around the world, from entire theme parks to individual attractions, retail establishments, dining venues and more.

by Universal Creative Team

110

Mark’s mission to “do better today than we did yesterday” is one of the driving forces behind Universal Creative. He challenges himself and his team to never rest on our laurels or accept anything less than excellence. His ability to lead holistically – being a knowledgeable source for marketing ideas, industry trends, financial data, innovative technology, design principles and more – is a rare talent that enables him to push the business forward effectively and strategically. Mark truly embodies creativity in everything that he does. His creative energy is effervescent and infectious – as his team, it inspires us to challenge our thinking, care about every detail, and color outside the lines. From Universal’s Islands of Adventure, to The Wizarding World of Harry Potter, his creative direction has brought to life immersive experiences and rich stories in ways that no one else could.

Mark is frequently described as “tough, but fair.” In the best way possible, he is not an easy audience. He challenges our team to be better, think differently, reach higher and dream bigger. Mark never settles, and he never lets his team settle either. One key quality that makes Mark an incredible leader is his humility. When Mark found out he would be receiving this award, his reaction was, “Why would they want to give this to me? I couldn’t have accomplished anything without my team.” He always shines the spotlight on others and takes opportunities to recognize his team for our contributions and hard work. The Buzz Price Thea Award is meaningful to us as a team because it acknowledges someone who never puts himself first or tries to be the lone hero. This award recognizes that Mark has continually championed teamwork, combining effective collaboration and intentional communication across a multitude of disciplines and functions to design, develop and deliver unforgettable experiences to our guests.

Finally, we would be remiss if we did not include one of our favorite qualities about Mark, his sense of humor. Mark has the uncanny ability to always hit a punch line, and the comedic timing of a born entertainer. Although his pranks may have subsided, his trademark dry sense of humor and quick wit are always there to remind us that we work in the business of fun and shouldn’t take ourselves too seriously. In summation, we could’ve used this article to tell you about the number of attractions Mark has opened or the fast facts of his career. But those won’t be Mark’s legacy. Mark’s legacy will be in the lives he has touched, both within Universal Creative and outside Universal Creative. His legacy will be in his unwavering advocacy for diversity and inclusion, his sincere desire to meet every Team Member and hear their story, his heartfelt “thank you’s“ and “congratulations,” the time he spent mentoring and developing his team, and his commitment to his family. It will also be in the extra time spent perfecting a design, the hand-drawn napkin sketches that turned into real-life buildings, the unconventional ideas that became blockbuster successes (think The Hogwarts Express), and his willingness to always bet on his team. Mark, there is no one more deserving of this award and we couldn’t be more proud of you. Thank you for everything. It wouldn’t be Universal Creative without you.

Dollywood - Pigeon Forge, TN, USA Thea Classic Award

The Thea Classic Award honors an outstanding “compelling place and experience” achievement from the past, which set new standards and which has stood the test of time. Dollywood is a 150-acre theme park located in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee. The park began as Rebel Railroad (1961-1970), then Goldrush Junction (1970-1976), and Silver Dollar City Tennessee (1977-1985). Since May 3, 1986, Dollywood has been owned and guided by Dolly Parton and Herschend Family Entertainment. Visitors from across the country and around the world flock to Dollywood to experience its 10 themed areas and enjoy the local culture. In 2019, Dollywood will open its 11th themed area, Wildwood Grove, representing the park’s largest expansion ever and described as a place where “adventure takes root and dreams take flight.” Over decades of expansion and improvement, the park remains true to Dolly’s priorities, passions and philanthropy through strong commitments to

114

community, employees and other initiatives that are unique in the industry. It began in 1961 as a small tourist attraction that included a historic steam railroad ride, general store, blacksmith shop and saloon. The park today includes more than 40 attractions, as well as highenergy entertainment, dining and retail areas. The 10 themed areas (soon to be joined by Wildwood Grove) are Showstreet, Rivertown Junction, Craftsman’s Valley, The Village, The Country Fair, Timber Canyon, Jukebox Junction, Owens Farm, Adventures in Imagination and Wilderness Pass. Dollywood lives up to the Herschend motto of “Creating Memories Worth Repeating®” with a blend of thrilling rides, spectacular shows, master craftsmen and heartfelt sincerity in the best traditions of the Great Smoky Mountains region where it was born. Culture, story and authenticity are hallmarks. Most important, at every point of the visitor experience, guests encounter employees with a genuine interest in the guest’s experience, delivering what is arguably the highest level of authentic human care and heart of any park in the world. Dollywood is truly a Classic.

Official Credits List - Dollywood Dollywood’s success can be attributed to the unprecedented vision of entertainment icon Dolly Parton, and theme park legends Jack and Pete Herschend. Their unique partnership, which began in 1986, highlights the strengths of each and has transformed the park from a regional attraction into one of the country’s most popular family destinations. Three leaders have been instrumental in guiding The Dollywood Company to its current position, company presidents Ted Miller, Ken Bell and Craig Ross.

It is impossible to list the thousands of employees, partners and supporters who have spent countless hours dedicated to offering a welcoming and thrilling atmosphere for all who enter. The overwhelming teamwork of so many has created this special place. From the friendliest hosts in the industry to world-class attractions and the highest quality live theme park entertainment, Dollywood provides an unparalleled guest experience and is a direct reflection of the evolving vision dreamed up by Parton and Herschend Family Entertainment.
