Kindergarteners?

When you are in kindergarten you will do reading groups.

You will do math papers.

And you will do art that will look so pretty at the end.

The teachers always want you to do your best work.

You will get a time test later in the year. When you pass Z you will have 80 facts to pass and the missing addend. You will have specialists like PE or music.

Sixth Graders?

Dear Upcoming Sixth Graders, Transitioning to a new building feels like changing schools and in some cases it is, but at least your friends are still there with you. For me, I thought that Middle School was going to be hard and that there was tons of homework and that teachers were going to be much stricter, but, in reality, that’s not always the case.

Going from Lower School to Middle School definitely has its differences and will be a little confusing for the first few weeks, but you get used to it so don’t get too worried. The main difference between Lower and Middle School is that there is more freedom which is a big plus for those who don’t want to be walking in lines and quiet during lunch, but freedom comes with some more responsibility. Even though you have more responsibility, it isn’t the hardest thing to conquer. Also, there is a little more homework, but if you use myMeadows, it is a piece of cake. The last big difference is that you can finally move from class to class with your own schedule, and memorizing your schedule comes easy after some practice.

If you want to be successful in Middle School, I suggest staying as organized as possible. If you are organized and get

homework done, you will do absolutely fine in Middle School.

Studying is also important if you want to keep a steady grade, but at this age, don’t wear yourself out with studying all night and all day and do some after-school sports or participate in plays or such.

Changing the way you go throughout your school life can be hard and sometimes a little stressful but so long as you balance out your time and do what you are told to do, you will be on your way to being a straight-A student.

Dear Upcoming Freshmen,

for detention.

Welcome to high school! If you want to make your transition year as smooth as possible, here’s some advice: 1. Get involved. Get involved in school clubs, sports, and activities. You’ll make a lot of new friends and enjoy the school year much more.

2. Stay on top of your school work (especially in Mr. Zimring’s class)! Your work load is going to increase as you go through high school. I highly recommend you stay on top of your work as much as possible, or even do some ahead of time, so you’re not stuck with 4 hours of homework the night before a big assignment is due.

Lastly, don’t forget to have some fun. Making friends and having a social life is a key part of maintaining your sanity during your high school career. Don’t forget that!

3. Learn what makes teachers tick. Knowing what bothers teachers will help make your freshman year a lot easier.

For example: DO NOT touch Ms. Chabot’s desk, and DO NOT use your phone in front of Mr. Vollan or Ms. Larson between classes, unless you want it taken away.

TOP THREE THINGS SENIORS SHOULD KNOW 1. Start college applications as soon as possible 2. Don’t be afraid to try new things even though you are a senior. For example Tanner [Rubeli ’19] and I started the Swing Dance Club this year. I had such a blast and I wrote some college application essays about it.

Middle and Upper School News Middle School Students Earn Honors More Debate Victories in Essay Contest

T

he Nevada Center for the Book, an affiliate of the Library of Congress Center for the Book, and the Nevada State Library, Archives & Public Records is excited to announce the winners of the 2016-2017 Letters About Literature Contest. This contest requires students to write an essay in the form of a letter to the author of a memorable book which has had a positive influence on them. This year 390 Nevada students wrote letters to authors that were read by the Library of Congress staff in the Letters About Literature contest.

Among these 390 entries only fifty-two advanced to the state level for judging, and twelve of those fifty-two are Mrs. Reeder’s students.

Mustang Mentors

The US Mustang Mentors program is wrapping up its first successful year of providing guidance and support to new students at The Meadows School. Upperclassmen worked closely with new students at the school throughout the year to help them transition and find a permanent home in the TMS community. Next year, the Mustang Mentors are looking forward to expanding their program to include providing a Mentor for every freshman at the Upper School as well as new students to the TMS community!

Journalism Students Take Home Review Journal Awards

T

his past May, we have had two team trips to the University of Kentucky in Lexington for the Tournament of Champions.

To start the month, Clara B. ’17 and Abdus N. ’17 attended the High School Tournament of Champions in Policy Debate.

Clara and Abdus have received six “bids” to the TOC this year. A team receives a “bid” by reaching the deep elimination rounds at national tournaments. If a team receives two or more bids, then they qualify for the TOC. Only 70-80 teams in the country qualify for the TOC, and six bids represents the most qualifiers that any Meadows team has ever received! It also is one of the ten best totals of any team in the nation. At the TOC, Clara and Abdus ended up with a winning record, going 4-3, against some of the toughest competition in the country. While they did not advance to the elimination rounds, finishing with a winning record is an outstanding achievement and a great effort at the end of a historic season. Congratulations to Clara and Abdus!

Later in May, Alexander W. ’21 attended the Middle School TOC. Alexander had a fantastic TOC! He advanced through the preliminary rounds of Lincoln Douglas debate with a 5-1 record, which was good enough to make him the Second Seed moving into the elimination rounds. He was named the Second Speaker, and defeated an opponent from University High School in Florida in quarterfinals to make it to the final four before bowing out to a debater from Kudos Academy in Los Angeles. In the first year of the MS TOC, there were teams from all over the country, representing many of the best MS programs and debaters. It was a great effort for Alex, and portends great things for his future. Great job Alex!

Middle and Upper School News TMS Teacher Helps Develop a New Board Game

TMS English teacher Rebecca Reeder played a role as one of the wildlife photographers in the development of a new board game, The Great Apes Survival Game. Sales of this game help support saving great apes from extinction. This board game is endorsed by Jane Goodall.

Mrs. Reeder and her husband, Bill Hunt, are longtime volunteers, donors, and charity event fundraisers with Dr. Birute Galdikas for orphan orangutan rescue and rehabilitation on the island of Borneo.

Birute M. Galdikas is one of the three women chosen by Dr. Louis Leakey to

study the great apes in the 1970's. While Jane Goodall and Dian Fossey headed to Africa to study chimpanzees and mountain gorillas, respectively, Dr. Galdikas headed to Borneo. This island is one of only two islands where the critically endangered orangutans exist in the wild. One of Mrs. Reeder's favorite orangutans was the star of the 2011 IMAX movie "Born To Be Wild," and she proudly calls him "Anak lelaki saya [my son]."

National Honor Society Inducts New Members

April 20, 2017 was an important event for thirty-seven students from The Meadows School inducted into the National Honor Society.

The National Honor Society (NHS) and National Junior Honor Society (NJHS) are the nation's premier organizations established to recognize outstanding high school students. More than just an honor roll, NHS serves to honor those students who have demonstrated excellence in the areas of Scholarship, Leadership, Service, and Character. These characteristics have been associated with membership in the organization since their beginnings in 1921 and 1929.

This year, some of the activities that our NHS students participated in included the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation Walk, the 3-square program, Catholic Charities Adopt-a-Family program, two community fall festivals, Thanksgiving baskets, Operation School Bell, a coat drive, writing letters to the military oversees, and The Miracle League. It was a very busy year.

President of National Honor Society, Steve S. ’17, was instrumental in the organization and function of this year’s society. Next year, Tucker H. ’18 will be the president and promises to increase that number of activities involving National Honor Society. Other officers for this year were VP Lauren O. ’18, Secretary/Historian Sarah J. ’18, and Parliamentarian Chloe N. ’17.

At this year’s induction ceremony, former NHS President and current UNLV Honors College student, Casey B. ’13 spoke on

her experience with service-based organizations in Las Vegas and around the country and the importance of students getting involved with their community. One of the new traditions of the National Honor Society at the inductions is the pinning of the new inductees by the senior members of NHS. Middle and Upper School News Hispanic Honor Society Outreach

National French Contest Results

During the month of March, 2017 The Hispanic Honor Society of The Meadows School translated various school books for Dr. C. Owen Roundy Elementary School. Many of the students of Dr. C. Owen Roundy Elementary School are bilingual and cannot study with their Spanish-speaking parents at home with books written only in English. Each student from The Meadows School Hispanic Honor Society chapter translated one of these books for the Dr. C. Owen Roundy Elementary School to help bridge the linguistic difficulties they might have at home.

On March 22, 2017, students from Mrs. Stamanis’ French classes took the National French Contest exam. Nearly 85,000 students participated nationally and the students of The Meadows School continued to be successful at this competition. A large number of TMS students received some form of National Recognition. All of the students in French 2, French Film, and AP French Language and Culture earned some sort of National Award.

This activity was entered into the Short-Term Activity of the Year contest for the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese (AATSP), the accreditation source for The Meadows School Hispanic Honor Society. Of the many contestants to enter the contest, The Meadows School placed third, earning a trip to the AATSP National Congress ceremony held in Chicago this June to receive their monetary prize. The AATSP Regional Director had the following words for The Meadows School for their efforts: “The tremendous compassion of your members was evident in the help and affection given to the children of Dr. C. Owen Roundy Elementary School. The successful translation of their school books shows the outstanding goodwill of the students to serve those in need. All Spanish teachers know that providing a motivation for using Spanish outside of the classroom while promoting an appreciation for culture is no easy task. For having complied with this objective in such an outstanding way and for all of your efforts to promote the objectives of the Hispanic Honor Society, you are the chosen recipients of the third place prize for the Short Term Activity of the year 2017. Congratulations!”

Thirty-one students received national ranking for the efforts in the form of certificates, medals, and the title of Lauréat National. For the first time in TMS history, we had not one, but two perfect scores. The young women who earned this prize receive a special plaque and certificate noting their National Rank of first place.

National Spanish Competition Results

by Dr. Jonathan Deen, Upper School Spanish Teacher Congratulations to our Middle and Upper School Spanish students who attained national recognition for excellent performance on the 2017 National Spanish Examinations.

Our Spanish students earned a total of 41 gold, 58 silver and 35 bronze medals along with 91 honorable mentions. “Attaining a medal or honorable mention for any student on the National Spanish Examinations is very prestigious,” said Kevin CessnaBuscemi, National Director of the Exams, “because the exams are the largest of their kind in the United States with over 157,000 students participating in 2017.”

The National Spanish Examinations are administered each year in grades 6 through 12, and are sponsored by the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese.
