OUR MISSION The Meadows School develops in its students a love of, and respect for, learning—inspiring them to seek knowledge independently and preparing them for higher academic pursuits.

The School maintains high standards and seeks to instill in its students the concept that education carries with it an obligation to self, family, and community. It encourages each student to become a compassionate and productive member of the increasingly global society of the 21st century.

The Meadows School admits students of any race, color, and national or ethnic origin to all rights, privileges, programs, and activities generally accorded or made available to the students of the School. DEAR MEADOWS FAMILY, Since our founding in 1984, The Meadows School has built a well-earned reputation for offering both a rigorous, college preparatory education and the kinds of extracurricular activities that support the development of well rounded students.

Our academic program and other offerings are unique to The Meadows, as no other school in the region can tout the successes we have seen over the course of the past three decades. TMS is also unique in that it is entirely funded by parents and supporters. Without you, none of the things that make The Meadows School so special would be possible.

Each year, we take the opportunity to publish and circulate The Meadows School Honor Roll of Donors. This publication provides insight into how the school is doing in its fundraising, how your generous contributions are spent, and most importantly, allows us the valuable opportunity to offer our heartfelt thanks for all that our supporters’ generosity allows us to do.

The past fiscal year has been another remarkable one for The Meadows community.

Looking back, we find it truly amazing just how much our students and staff pack into just ten months. We genuinely hope you enjoy taking a look at this issue of the Honor Roll, which details just a handful of things our community has engaged in each month of the past year.

We are humbled to be called upon to serve an institution like The Meadows School, where once again the Board of Trustees, Alumni Board, TMSPA Board, and the entire faculty and staff supported the 2016-17 Annual Fund. Moreover, 61% of the School’s parent body, comprising the majority of 535 total donors made the Annual Fund a philanthropic priority. Thank you!

STRATEGIC PLANNING STATEMENT: 5-YEAR PLAN

he Board of Trustees of The Meadows School is charged, in part, with the long-term health and welfare of our school. This requires us, in consultation with our administration, to evaluate constantly what we are providing to our students and families, both currently and prospectively in the future. Our motto, “In Pursuit of Excellence,” carries with it a mandate to improve and strengthen our school whenever and however possible. As such, the Board embraces the responsibility of staying current on trends and advancements in education, both globally and locally, and acting alongside our administration to position appropriately our school to best serve our students and families.

As a Board, we affirm our support of the School’s need to evaluate, and respond appropriately as needed, to shifts brought on by changes in educational technology, local offerings, student needs, and other realities. In considering and undertaking potential enhancements and the development of the School’s next Strategic Plan, we have established five guiding principles that will inform and shape the decisionmaking process for The Meadows School. everal decades ago, before there was a Barder Hall, a Peccole Center for the Arts, a Creel Field, or the hundreds of trees that line our campus, there was a small street that served as the entry point to The Meadows School: Scholar Lane.

Nearly thirty years later, the area around that small street has grown and expanded with businesses, restaurants, and shops, and The Meadows has flourished into the thriving community we know today. But beyond the buildings and landscaping that make our campus so beautiful, it is the people who inhabit these spaces that make TMS special.

So much happens in a year on Scholar Lane: learning, teaching, competing, drawing, painting, singing, dancing, acting, innovating, creating, discovering. Here, we invite you to take a look back at the 201617 school year. he Meadows has a long history of fostering the development of musical skills, and our program provides students with a wide range of opportunities to demonstrate their expanding musical engagement. Our curriculum also promotes the understanding and appreciation of many different types of music by both performers

and listeners. Most students in grades K through 12 are enthusiastically involved in extracurricular music-making. Students eagerly join The Meadows Singers, Orchestra, Jazz Band, Symphonic Band, Pep Band, Elite String Ensemble, Handbells, or Encore Performance. All groups perform several times throughout the year, both at School and

In August, forty-two TMS students across all four divisions performed for Virtuoso Travel Week at the Bellagio Hotel. The orchestra was accompanied by the Las Vegas Philharmonic and performed two pieces arranged by orchestra director Mrs. Denitza

xperiential learning is a process through which students develop knowledge, skills, and values from direct experiences outside a traditional academic setting. These experiences through The Meadows encompass a variety of activities including internships, service learning, and field trips. Well-planned, supervised, and assessed experiential learning programs can stimulate academic inquiry by promoting interdisciplinary learning, civic engagement, career development, cultural awareness, leadership, as well as other professional and intellectual skills.

In September, students in 7th, 8th, 10th, and 11th grades left campus for Schoolsponsored class trips to bond, explore, engage, and integrate their classroom learning experiences. Middle School students

traveled to California for Pali Camp and Astrocamp trips. These experiences present a different type of learning for TMS students.

Our Middle Schoolers learn to overcome fears and work together and support each other.

The sophomore class ventured to our nation’s capital to see monuments, meet lawmakers, and witness government in action. Part of the core curriculum for tenth graders is U.S. History and American Literature, and this trip provides enrichment to the classroom experience. A dominant part of the junior year is college exploration. To this end, the eleventh graders traveled to Mid-West and Mid-Atlantic regions for tours of universities.

These high school trips use the alreadyestablished themes of the respective classes to set the tone for the year.

he Meadows School maintains that education carries with it an obligation to community, and we strive to instill this concept in our students. The School’s service program is designed to give students an understanding of the importance of contributing to the larger community, establishing a lifelong pattern of community activity, and providing opportunities for service. The Meadows’ various honor societies and graduation requirements all maintain community service standards. Further, a commitment to serving the community is firmly established in our mission.

Since 2004, the students of the Lower School have participated in Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF,

the Halloween-themed campaign that strives to improve the lives of children all over the world. Ms. Brennan’s fifth-grade class coordinates the program annually, tallying the money after the trick-or-treating is done.

Later in the year, the entire School commemorated Founders’ Day with an AllSchool Day of Service. Every student from Beginning Schoolers to seniors participated in a meaningful activity that improved the School, the community, or the world. Students wrote letters to servicemen and women overseas, cleaned around campus, volunteered at food banks, and befriended senior citizens all in honor of the School’s founders and its mission.

T

he Meadows School has quite a number of cherished traditions and events -- both expected (commencement exercises, Homecoming, reunions) and unexpected (pumpkin donating and the Long Blue Line). Behind each of these annually-recurring events is a central theme that comes up time and again with TMS: here you’ll find a collaborative and affirming community, where students spur one another to achieve and accomplish their personal best.

In November, one of our longest standing traditions is celebrated the day before Thanksgiving -- Grandparents Day. Grandparents from all divisions begin their day in the Upper School Common for breakfast and then enjoy musical and theatrical performances in the Peccole Center for the Arts. Students in grades kindergarten through 12 entertain the packed audience, including a special medley of turkey songs from the kindergarten class. Following the show, grandparents receive flower turkeys and join their grandchildren for a tour and pictures in the classroom.

t the center of The Meadows’ program is the written word. Writing and reading well are the keys that open all doors, and all TMS graduates leave the School armed with powerful tools of selfexpression, including academic prose, research, and creative writing. TMS students can say with confidence who they are and where they are going. Beyond honing their language skills, Meadows students learn to use language in the real world, to express thoughts and emotions, to exchange ideas, to entertain, and to persuade.

In December, Middle Schoolers were inspired by the written word to make a difference in the world. As eighth grade students completed a close reading of Mark Twain’s Pudd’nhead Wilson, classroom discussion

centered around some characters’ lack of empathy. This discussion reinforced some of the Middle School assembly and advisory themes of acting through kindness.

Students took these lessons to apply empathy in a modern, real life situation through participation in a special opportunity that Kiva, the world’s first online lending platform, offered to the class. Students had 15 twentyfive dollar loans to award to people around the globe. Students browsed the micro-loan applicants’ photos and stories and decided where their money might do the most good.

As the students discussed the people whose lives can be changed with small amounts of money, they made the connection between literature and modern life.

As global citizens, we expose our students to cross-cultural learning in various ways: international trips, foreign language study, and presentations of holiday traditions from around the world. Students are immersed in

Every January, kindergarten and 5th grade students embrace the Chinese culture with a Chinese New Year celebration. This nearly three-decade-old tradition started in 1988, when the two kindergarten classes paraded through the halls of the school singing “See

the Dragon Come.� At that time, the dragon head was made from a 5-gallon ice cream tub with round cardboard circles connected by garland representing parts of the dragon body. In 1996, the celebration expanded and kindergarten and 5th grade students dressed in red and yellow and took the parade to the Fremont Street Experience, which included a large, custom handmade dragon.

In 1997, the venue changed to the current location in the Forum Shops at Caesar’s Palace. Today, students dress in authentic red and yellow outfits and parade through the School and the Forum with a custom-designed dragon made in Hong Kong. Students sing Chinese songs and recite traditional Chinese poetry, celebrating the Chinese culture.

articipation in athletics provides many opportunities to round out a Meadows education. Starting in Lower School, students receive physical education several times a week to better the mindbody connection. Sports are introduced in an age-appropriate way that translates to more competitive play in the higher levels.

As students progress into Middle and Upper Schools, a greater emphasis is placed on specific skills.

In conjunction with the Nevada Interscholastic Athletic Association (NIAA), the athletic department sets policies and procedures that govern the spirit of competition at TMS. These policies and procedures require parental support, which is achieved through

proactive communication. Athletic traditions are created and maintained through hard work and dedication to the program.

Student-athletes and their families are an integral part of building this type of tradition at TMS. In February, TMS celebrated the hard work, dedication, and spirit of three people integral to The Meadows athletic program with the inaugural Hall of Fame induction.

Kari Gregory ‘03, Jeff Hutzler, and Linda Richardson (athlete, coach, and friend of TMS athletics, respectively) were honored during the All-School Spirit Night in front of a packed house. The accomplishments and service of these individuals helped shape the athletic program at The Meadows.

rama at TMS offers students the chance to learn the art of theatre in ways both practical and intellectual. The program stresses attention to detail, the strengthening of the power of observation, the development of empathy, and the use of language to explain, persuade, and describe. Theatre succeeds only when every participant supports the larger effort.

Students design lights and sound and work with a costumer on wardrobe, hair, and makeup.

In March, students participated in the State Thespian Competition at Liberty High School. Thirty students performed from the Middle and Upper Schools in individual events including solo musical, duet musical, monologues, duet scenes, and group scenes.

Of the over 800 Nevada high schoolers who competed, twenty-four received perfect scores; five of these came from The Meadows. In addition, nearly half of TMS competitors received superior scores, qualifying them for the International Thespian Conference.

anguage and culture are inseparable. At TMS, the study of world languages balances the learning of grammatical rules and syntactical structures with the ability to communicate effectively and comfortably with people from other cultures and traditions. Through the use of literature, fine arts, media, history, geography, and different world views, students develop an appreciation of cultural diversity along with their facility to read, write, and converse in another language.

April was an exciting month for world languages at The Meadows. The National Spanish Competition and National French Contest results were published and proved to be successful for TMS students. Our Spanish students earned 225 honors. These exams are the largest of their kind in the United States and attaining an honor is very prestigious. Our French students also fared well in their exams. All students in French 2, French Film, and AP French Language and Culture earned a national award, including two perfect scores.

n 1991, three young women walked across the stage, received their diplomas, and became the first graduates of The Meadows School. Today, TMS graduating classes are more than 20 times the original, but the impact and meaningfulness to the seniors and their families is just as special.

On May 27th, sixty-five Meadows students became Meadows alumni. The members of the class of 2017 were accepted to 136 distinct colleges and universities, received over $5,075,000 in renewable academic scholarships, and matriculated to schools in 19 different states, plus Washington, D.C. These graduates represent the best of TMS. These young men and women exemplify our mission: independent thinkers who love and respect learning; compassionate and productive members of a global society. They are the products of a Meadows education ready to leave their marks on the world.

ach year, hundreds of alumni, parents, grandparents, faculty, staff, and students join together to give back to TMS. While TMS parents contribute most of the total dollars to the Annual Fund each year, Mustangs of all affiliations have progressively rallied their support, empowering TMS to make an indelible positive imprint on the world.

Over the past two years, faculty and staff giving has reached 100% participation, and our parent donors have increased by more than 15%. More and more alumni have recognized the opportunities powered by Annual Fund generosity and are proudly embracing their role as our next generation of philanthropic leaders.
