LastyearourproducerRuthMyers suggestedthatwetakepartinaGreek tragedywhichwouldbeperformedat BristolOldVic.Tosaythatwewere
gobsmackedwasanunderstatement. Myini�althoughtswere"no!”because wewriteourownscripts!AGreek tragedysoundedsofarremovedfrom ourcommunityplaysitwasalmost unthinkable.ButRuthdoesn’tgiveup thateasilyandbeforelongwewere actuallyseriouslythinkingaboutit.
WealsolearnedthatLucyHunt (thedirectorfromtheOldVic)had beendeterminedtogetusonstage eversincetheycametoSouthmeadin 2017.Theplaywascalled“Orpheus& Eurydice”andisallaboutlove.We startedrehearsalsinSouthmead earlierthisyearandourdirectorwas LisaGreganwhoalsodirectedourfirst play.Shewasbrilliantandverydown toearth,andsheevenletusputabit ofMeadertalkintheplay!

peoplefromacrossBristolwhich includedmanycommunitygroups. Wesharedourrehearsalspacewith agroupcalled“OiPolloi”whowere recoveringfromalcohol/drug misuseissues.Theagerangewas from7to87andtheyoungsters actuallyplayedtheGods. Rehearsalsrampeduptowardsthe endofAugust.Wehadtolearnthe “DanceOfTheDead”whichwas verybeau�ful.
OurgroupplayedFerrypeople whoferrythedeadsoulstothe Underworld.Ourscenewasvery funnywithOrpheuslookingfor Eurydiceandustellinghimtoget lost.SherFowleraddedalineatthe veryendofthescenewhichwas “CheersDrive”whichmadethe audiencelaughoutloud.There were12ofusinourgroupandwe hadtheverylovelyCarlotaMatosas ourproducer.Shesome�meshadto reignusinatrehearsalsaswewere laughingsomuchatSher’s interpre�vedance.Wedidpresent herwithalovelybunchofflowers,a cardandsomegoodiesa�erthe finalshow.Wetoldherthatwe couldn’thavedoneitwithouther andthatshehadthepa�enceofa saint.
Duringtheplaytherewere sevenspeechescalledWIKOLS (WhatIKnowOfLove)performed.I wasluckyenoughto
monologueofmymemoriesoflove throughoutmylife.Thesecouldbe aboutafriend,ananimalora partner.Althoughitwasscaryitwas alsowonderfultoexpressthemon stage.Luckilythespotlightwasso brightIcouldn’tseetheaudience’s faces!Ididn’trealisethatmywords wouldmakepeoplelaughandcry. YoucanreadmyWIKOLmonologue inthepinkboxbelow!
Weperformedtheplayfour �mesandhadasell-outcrowdof 500peopleateachone.Theplay waspureBristolian,andthewriter AdamPeckdidamarvellousjob withit.Wehada5-starreview fromStageTalkmagazine.A manevencamealltheway fromLondontogeta�cket, buttheyweresoldout!
EveryoneattheOldVic wassofriendlyand suppor�veitfeltlikewe hadknownthemfor years.
Itwassuchabrilliant experienceforallofus andhasbroughtour groupevencloser.Wewill, ofcoursebeback performinginSouthmeadwith MeadowsToMeaders5butifwe getaskedtodo somethingoutof ourcomfortzone again,wewill definitelytakeit on!

WhatIknowofloveismyfirstadultkisswitha co-worker.Itwasamagicalmomenttoshare withhimasitwasinadirty,smellywarehouse. Wewerebothsofedupwithasummerofrain andthekisswilllivelonginthememory. WhatIknowofloveisthedaythatmyhusband andIhadourfirstproperdate.Itwasaboiling hotdayinJune,andwewenttoadiscotogether. Webothwentoutsidetocooldownandsaton somesteps.Webothlookedateachotherand said,“Ithinkthisisthestartofsomething special”.Wegotmarried6yearslaterandhave beenmarriedfor43years.

NeighboursConnect Southmead(NCS)wasborn fromtheknowledgethatpeopledo notalwaysgetthecareorsupport theyneedanddeservewithinthe community.
HereattheTrust,welookedat waystotakepressureofftheAdult SocialCaresystem.Wewantedto createaservicewherecommunity volunteerscouldsupportother residentsandactasabridgetothe restofthecommunity.
So,wecarefullymatched trainedVolunteersfromwithinthe community,withresidentsinthe communitywhoneededcompany andhelp.Theideaistodothings togethersuchasdiscovering communitysocialgroups,ormore prac�calthingslikegoingtothe doctorsandsmalltasksorhobbies athome.Volunteerscanalsogain valuableworkexperienceinthe sector.
Wenowhavegreatnewsto sharewhichisthatwehavebeen givenfurtherfundingtokeep NeighboursConnectSouthmead goingforanotherfewyears.This meanswecannowincreaseour numberofVolunteers,andalso con�nuetoencouragetheCouncil’s AdultSocialCareteamtorefer residentstoustosupport.

Weknowthattreesare importanttoour community.We’veheardthatthe treesalongGreystokeAvenuearea favouritefeatureofthe neighbourhood.Plan�ngtreesis alsoagoodwaytotakeposi�ve ac�onforourplanet.So,hereat theTrustwethoughtwe’dadd somemorebyfunding20new streettreesinSouthmead.
Streettreesaren’tjustlovelyto lookat.Theygiveuslotsofother benefitstoo.Theyprovidewildlife withfoodandshelter,keepuscool whenitgetshot,reduceflooding, andtheyabsorbairpollu�onand carbondioxide.Anddidyouknow theyalsohaveaposi�veimpacton ourmentalhealth?Spending�me amongsttreescanlowerstress, anxiety,anddepression.Research suggeststhatifchildrencansee treesintheirdailylives,thenthey haveearlyopportuni�estoconnect
withnature,anditsupportstheir braindevelopmentandwellbeing. Treesareamazing!
We’llbeplan�ngthetrees throughTreesforStreets,acharity whohavepartneredwithBristol CityCounciltoplantsponsored streettreesacrossthecity.The Councilhavechosenplan�ngspots sothatnewtreesdon’tgetinthe wayofinfrastructure.They’vealso chosenthetypesoftreessothey arethemostsuitableforeach loca�on.
So,weneedyourhelpto choosethefinal20plan�ngspots! Onthenextpagethere’samap with25possiblespotstochoose from.Allyou’vegottodoisletme knowwhichonesyou’dliketosee treesin.Youcantellmeasmanyas youwant.Leavemeamessageon thephone,emailwiththenumbers you’vechosen,oryoucancirclethe numbersyouwantandreturnitto theGreenwayCentrerecep�on.The mostpopularspotswillgettrees plantedthiswinter.

I’dbeenhavingafew conversa�onswithvarious peopleregardingthecost oflivingcrisis.Iheard frommanythatthe choicewas “hea�ngor ea�ng”,havingto choosebetween hea�ngtheir housesorfeeding themselvesand theirfamily.
IcontactedSarah andClairefrom TravellingKitchenand weputaplantogethertodoa CommunityCookUp.We’d getpeopletogethertoprepare, cookandeatameal.Notonlydoes thismakecosteffec�vemeals, enoughtotakehomeandfreeze, butcruciallyitalsogetssome isolatedpeopletogether.A�erthe pandemic,whenmanywerealone, thisisreallyimportant.
Wemetonceamonthandhad acoupleofvolunteerstohelpset upandsupportpeoplethroughthe session.
Sixmonthslatertheprojectis finishedand�mehasflownby. Therewerelotsofnewfriendships made.Wewereali�lesadthat we’dcometoourlastsessionbut alsobuzzingwithexcitement, andhopefulforthegroup tocon�nue.

Iwasfirstawareofthe GreenwayCentrewhenitwas suggestedtomethatIjoina Crea�veWri�ngGroupthat wasbeingsetupandled byKathHorseman.
Atthe�me mysociallife consistedof twoshopping tripsandthe occasional dayoutwith afriend.My family persuaded metohavea goasthiswas somethingI coulddoforme, justforme.Ihad beenre�redsinceIwas
60,andhadlookeda�erothers bothpersonallyandprofessionally allmylife.Now,attheageof81and withthegrandchildrenallold enoughtolooka�er themselves,the�me wasright.
Sincethat �meImust saythe Greenway Centrehas opened upanew worldfor me.NowI comehere forthe wri�ng groupand whatalovely groupweare. Wehavehadothers
comeandgobuthaveaconstant groupnow.Sevenofusthatnot onlyshareourwri�ngbutshare eachothersviewsandideas.
Ihavealsojoinedthesinging groupwithSuefromthewri�ng group.Thiswassetupbymy daughterSherwhoisaCommunity DevelopmentWorkerfor SouthmeadDevelopmentTrust.The singingisjustforfunandvery enjoyable.Boththesingingand wri�nggrouphavebeentodifferent eventstoshareourwri�ngand singingwithothercommuni�es.

comingtotalktous.Youmayhave seenheronthelocalnewswith SheetalJethwafromtheradiowhen shedidamenopausetalkatSparks. Wehaveaccumulatedagood amountofhandoutsandbooksyou canborrownowtoo.
