TheideaistogooutonChristmas daytoshareamealandspendtheday withourunfortunateBristolci�zens whohappentobewithnofamilyor whoarehomelessonChristmasday. Wepreparefood,hotdrinksand
dessertandtourthestreetsofBristol sharingfoodandcompany.
Thecorevisionistoensure unfortunatehomelessfellowci�zens celebrateChristmaswithusasonebig family.Soforthepasteightyearswe gooutandcelebratethedayinthe streetsofBristolwithotherhundreds offellowMuslimsandChris�ans together.ManyMuslimfamiliesare Sudanese,Somalian,Arabianand Asian,andwiththeirchildrenjoinin andbringfoodanddesserts.

A�eracoupleofsuccessfultripsback inthesummerwewereinundated withrequeststobooksomemore.AtThe TravellingTeapotweholdcoffeemornings toraisemoneytohelpfundthetripsand makethemaffordablebysubsidisingthe majorityofthecost.Withrisingpetrol pricesthebushirehasdoubledand thereforereducestheamountoftripswe areabletooffer.Itisalifelinetomanywho haven’tgottransport,ortheirhealthand mobilityrestrictstheiruseoflocalbuses. With‘doortodoor’pick-upsand‘dropoffs’ wemakeithappen.

Weenjoyge�ngtogetherto takeagentlestrollinourlocal parksandhavingacuppaa�er.We’ve beendoingthisforafewyearsnowand havediscoveredthereareplentyof parks,pathsandgardenstokeepus interestedsowedon’tno�ceourlegs moving!Thiswaywekeepac�veand builduparou�newithplentyofsocial chattolookforwardtoeachweek.
Themaingroupmeetsatthe GreenwayCentreonWednesday morningsat10am.Youmayhaveseen usse�ngoffthroughthecarparkor downDoncasterRoadheadingto Badock’sWood.Thisgrouphasbeen goingforoverfouryearsnowand plentyofwalkershavebecome volunteers,helpingtolead,ortokeep aneyeoutattheback.Someofustake ashortcutandreturnearly,while otherscon�nueforthehour.
Everyonemeetsbackatthe GreenwayCentre’scafeforcoffeeanda chat,andonceamonthwehavelunch together.We’vebeengivensome fundingfromtheJohnJames Founda�ontopayforthesesocials.
Wereallyenjoynewwalkersjoining ussopleasedon’tbeputoffbythesize ofthegroup,everyonewillwelcome youandyoucanjoininasmuchoras li�leasyoulike.There’snopressureto comeeveryweek,it’sjustmostpeople likeitsotheycomeregularly.Thisway wemakefriends,andcancatchupwith eachother.
Therearesmallergroupsthatmeet inlocalparks–atTheArdaghon HorfieldCommon,CanfordParkin Westbury,atSouthmeadHospital allotment,andatBlaiseMuseum.All thegroupsfollowasimilarformatand manywalkersa�endseveralgroups
Whydowedothis?Weknowit feelsgoodtobeac�ve,butnotunder pressure.Andtobeoutsideinthefresh airanddaylight,andyes,some�mesthe rain!Solongaswearedressedforthe weatherwearefine,andweeven boughtsomelargebrollieswhichsome ofthevolunteerscarrytoshare.We
cantalkaboutanyconcerns.Wecan listentoeachotherandshareideas and�ps.Weliketoseethechanging seasonsinthetreesandnatureasthe leavescomeandgo.Weliketolookat theflowers,thecolours,theclouds, andmeetotherwalkersanddogsas theygoby.Andallthismeansfora li�lewhileweforgetourworriesand justhaveabreakfromthebusiness andpressuresoflife.

IrealisedthenthatIneededhelp and,whilesearchingforanewdoctor, Ino�cedtheword‘Community’in GreenwayCommunityPrac�cesomethingfamiliar.Ineededto connect.FromthenonIbeganto buildarela�onshipwiththem, accessingtreatmenttogetbe�er.I wasofferedtraumacounselling ini�allytohelpmecopewithday-todaylife.Iwasthenreferredtothe SocialPrescribingserviceatthe SouthmeadDevelopmentTrustand joinedagardeninggrouptomeet morewomeninsimilarcircumstances. ThroughtheserviceIwasalsoableto gotosomeswimmingsessionsat HenleazeLakeandstartedtomake friends.
