ToCelebrate Sanctuaryin Southmeadthisyear there’llbeaWelcome WalkwiththeGreenway StrollersonWednesday14th June,andadedicatedareaand performancesattheSouthmead Festival.Thisyearit’salsothe 20thanniversaryoftheFestivalof Nature-from9thto18thJune there’llbeeventsatBlaiseCastle andLeighWoods,aswellasinthe citycentre,tohonourandenjoy ournaturalworld.There’slots goingontoprotectand encourageournaturalworldin Southmead,readmoreonpages 4and5.

TheSouthmeadFestivalteam putineveryeffortnottoclash withotherfestivals,butBristolis jampackedwithsummerfestivals

everyweekend!This yearoursis alongsidethe BristolPride festivalwhich celebratesthe LGBTQ+ community,with abusyschedule from24thJuneto 9thJuly.There’s plentyoftimeforyouto attendPrideeventsandcometo theSouthmeadFestivalthoughso docometoboth!

I'msurewe'reallenjoying springasitgiveswayto summer.Soisthenaturalworld. Birdsareworkingtofeedtheir youngwithpigeons,crows,great �ts,blue�ts,housesparrowsand manyotherstakingfoodtotheir nests.Inlocalstreamsandrivers willowmossandalgaearegrowing fast,shrimps,olivemayflies,caddis fliesanddamselfliesareac�ve,and fish(pluso�ersandwatervolesif they’rearound)arefeedinghardon thefoodaroundthem.

OnFriday19thMayanecologist fromBristolAvonRiversTrust visitedtosurveytheTrymforthe TroutintheTrymgroup,aimingto seeiftherearewatervolespresent. Sigh�ngshavebeenreportedand it'sworthansweringthisques�on as,whiletheywereoncecommon, theyarenowrare(redlisted)inthe UK.It'sagood�meofyearfora surveyasthenumberofvoles increasesinspring.Theywillbe feedinghardandleavingsignsof ea�ngplantsandleavingpoo.

Theriverbankswerethoroughly surveyedintheSeaMillsareaand alsoinBadock'sWood. Unfortunately,thefindingswere clear-nowatervoles.Therewas evidenceofbankvolesandbrown rats-butthatwasit.Itislikelythat folkshavespo�edtheodd individualpassingthroughlooking tofindanewterritory,butnone havese�led.Itappearsthehabitat isn’tquiteright.Ashamebutnow weknow.We'regratefultothe BristolAvonCatchmentPartnership forfundingthesurvey.

Ontheplussidethesurvey foundevidenceofo�ers.Thesewill beindividualspassingthrough.They havebigterritoriesandvisit differentareasbeforemovingon. Wemayneverseethembecause they’recarefultoavoidpeopleand dogsbutit'samazingtoknow they’vebeenhere.Thetrout,eels androachintheTrymwillknow

thattoo.Infact,thisyearthere seemtobefewertroutandtheyare morewarythanever, possiblydownto o�erac�vity.

Youmay seeTroutin theTrym volunteers li�er picking and removing rubbish inthe Trymand HazelBrook.

Wedoriver cleaning sessionsonFridays whichyou’rewelcometo join!Volunteersarealso discussingwaterquality withWessexWaterwho havesharedtheirplanto fixtheworstCombined SewerOu�lows(CSOs)inour area.Otherac�onstoimprove waterqualityarebeingconsidered bythemtoo.Withcleanerwater andnorubbishourstreamscan becomeabundantnaturalpathways linkingupothergreenspaces.By repor�ngsuspectedpollu�onto WessexWaterandneverpu�ngoil,

paint,and wetwipesdownthe drainsortoiletswecanallhelpkeep theriverclean.Evenge�nga waterbu�wecanmake adifference.You mayhaveseen thesignat Badock’sWood asareminder. Already ourstreams lookbe�er. Asweheadtowardsthe summersols�ce(thelongest day)on21stJuneitfeelslikethe worldhasbeenwakinguparound usagain.I’vebeen celebra�ngascolour andcri�ersreturnto mywalktowork andmy a�ernoonsatthe allotment.Birds arebusyand insectsare buzzing.And whilstwildac�vity haspickedup,it’s importanttobe mindfulthatthehomes ofthesewonderful creaturesareunder moreandmore pressure.

We’resofortunate hereinSouthmeadto havegreenspaces,andat theGreenwayCentrewe embracedNoMowMay.Infact, betweenMarchandtheendofthe summerwe’vestoppedmowingthe edgeofthefieldallthewayfrom theBadock’sWoodkissinggateto theappletreesbythecarpark.

NoMowMayisana�onal campaigntoencourageplantsto growandflowertogivefoodand sheltertoavarietyofwildlife.I’ve takenabreakfrommydeskeach weektowanderthegroundsand seewhat’spoppedup,coun�ng differentplantspecies–sofar, we’vegot21!Ourplanisdothis eachyearandasthingsflowerand setseed,wehopethediversityof plants,flowersandinsectswill grow.We’llbecarryingonwithLet ItBloomJune!Smallac�onscan makeabigdifferencewhenit comestosuppor�ngnatureand takingac�onfortheclimate.

Speakingofwhich,I’mreally pleasedtoleteveryoneknow thatSouthmeadDevelopment TrusthasbeenchosentocoproduceaCommunity ClimateAc�onPlanwith Southmeadresidents.

Ini�allythroughaseriesof workshopsandmentoringsessions wewilllearnhowtoputtogether thistypeofplan.We’llbealongside fiveotherBristol-basedcommunity organisa�ons:KnowleWestMedia Centre,HillfieldsCommunity Garden,WindmillHillCityFarm, BristolChari�es,andBricksBristol. They’llalsobeproducingaplan withtheircommuni�es,andweare allpartofthesecondgroupin Bristoltomakeplans,soallofours willjointhosemadelastyearinthe firstphaseoftheproject.

I’mexcitedthat community-led climateac�onis being championedin Bristol.Itmeans thatresidents cansharetheir priori�esandideas forwhat’sneededin theircommunityas thepeoplewho knowtheir communi�esbest.

Tacklingtheclimate andecologicalcrisis

shouldn’tmakethechallengeswe alreadyfaceworse.Itcanand shouldimprovepeople’squalityof life.Aclimateac�onplancanhelp ustotackleotherlocalpriori�es too.

ustoabout20peopleandwehave lotsofsongsinourrepertoire,we haverecentlyaddedsome Eurovisionclassics!

Iwashavingachatwithtwo ladiesfromtheCrea�ve Wri�ngGroup,PamelaandSue.It wentsomethinglikethis:“wouldn’t itbegoodtohaveasinginggroup? Notasseriousasachoirjust somethingfun”.So,Isawthisasan opportunity.

ItturnedoutSarah,whoispart ofourwalkinggroup,couldplaythe ukelele.Shewasupforgivingsome ofherspare�metoasingalong.We arrangedameetupoveracuppa andtwoweekslaterourfunsinging groupbegan.

ThefirstweekIwasali�le nervousandsowerethe par�cipants.Afewsaidthey couldn’tsinganoteatall.Itold themthiswasa fun singinggroup anditreallydidn’tma�erifyou wereintuneornot.Wehavea varietyofpar�cipants-agesrange from26to87.

SwibaandImanmadeparty bagsforthekids,alongwith homemadeEidbiscuitsandyummy hibiscusdrinks.Weplayed Sudanesemusicandhadthe wonderfulHennaAr�stNaz decora�ngourhands.Wesaw plentyofoldandnewfacescome togetherandcelebrate.

Swibasaid,“Itmademefeel moreinvolvedandwelcomeinthe communityandmoresupportedin mylocalarea.Forourkidsithelped themnotfeelsohomesickand moreathomeinSouthmead.In SudanatthemomentthisEid wasnotcelebrateddueto thewar,andwewereso worriedaboutour familiesthere.This celebra�onatTheRanch helpeduscometogether andforgetourworries foramoment.”

TheideaforaDeathCaféhas comefromresidentsandwasput forwardinthelast‘Livingin SouthmeadUpdate’.Welooked intopossibili�esandconnected withtheinterna�onalDeathCafé whosuggesttheaimofaDeath Caféis‘toincreaseawarenessof deathwithaviewtohelping peoplemakethemostoftheir (finite)lives’.

Wedon’tgetalotofprac�ce talkingaboutanddealingwith deathanddying.Discussingthese thingshelpsustonormalisethem andlivelifebe�er,morerichly,and withpurposeandmoremeaning. Peoplecano�enleavefeeling moreempoweredandfree.

Butnow there’sgreat news.The libraryKnit andNa�er grouphas restartedon Wednesday mornings 11am-12pm.There’s noneedtobringany equipmentorwoolasit’sall readyandwai�ngforyou,

copewithstress,andfeelmore confident.Wecanalsosupport parentsandcarerswithparen�ng supportgroupsandinforma�on drop-ins.Lastyearweranmore than230sessions.

We’vebeenworkinghard overthelastfewmonths ondifferentaspectsofthehousing projectforGlencoyneSquare.We’ve submi�edsomeslightlyrevised planstorespondtocomments raisedbytheCouncil’sDesign, EcologyandHighwaysteams.

Ihaveonlyrecently movedto Southmeadandhave founditvery welcoming.The communityiswell establishedwithlotsof peopleinvolvedand helpingtheirneighbours. Ihavealwaysbeena supporterofworkingtogether co-opera�vely.Inthis waywecandoso muchmorethan wecanas individuals. Different peoplehave differentskills toshareand togetherwecan beathriving community.

SouthmeadDevelopmentTrust providesanopportunityforthat. Iamre�rednowwhichmeans thatIhavemuchmore�me tohelpoutandrepay someofthebenefitsthat Ihavegainedoverthe years.Volunteeringis alsoaverygoodwayof findingoutwhatis goingoninthearea. Talkingtoarangeof peopleandfinding outwhatisavailable andwhatneedstobe improvedisinteres�ng andmo�va�ng. Everythingcounts.Fromwalkingand gardeningtowashingthecar. Personally,Ilovegoingtothegym, doingfitnessclassesandwalkingto getmyBodyMagic!
