hearts and a desire to connect with everyone, whoever they are, and wherever they are at. Groups range from memory ac�vi�es, arts and cra�s, cha�ng and coffee, kni�ng, board games, batch cooking, walking, singalongs, and days out. There is also a brilliant monthly market in the Main Hall run by volunteers (dates on page 18).

Next there is more specific help collected together at the Greenway Thursday Support & Advice Hub (see page 4). Here you will find Ci�zen’s Advice, the Food Bank, Barclays Local banking (where have all the banks gone?!), the NHS jobs team, Bristol Somali support, and Parent and Carer groups.

From November 14th the Trust’s new Greenway Learning & Wellbeing team (see page 5) will be there on Thursdays to hear about the aspects of our lives which might be holding us back. The team will be se�ng up specific learning and opportuni�es in response to what residents tell them.

This could be support with confidence, mental or physical health, educa�on, employment, loneliness, or isola�on.

Thursdays are busy, and while it is deligh�ul to see residents coming together to find connec�on and support, at the same �me it is saddening that so much support is needed.

But that is our job here at the Trust – to listen to and respond to our community. So, to offer even more

opportuni�es we will also be running bigger, seasonal support events, to bring more organisa�ons together under one roof. Everyone is invited to our Winter Connect on Thursday 12th December (see back page). Here there will not only be professionals to help and advise, but other things to enjoy as well like food workshops and entertainment, with free cuppas and snacks.

As well as offering support, we like to help set up events just for fun. You may have come along in previous years to our special focus week to celebrate Winter. This year the date is the week beginning Monday 2nd December where we invite everyone to try to forget winter living issues for just a moment with some refreshments, themed ac�vi�es, and to share different ways to celebrate. It does not ma�er what or how you celebrate in Winter – Christmas, Kwanzaa, Diwali, Hanukkah, Sols�ce, Lunar New Year, and many more - we would just love to experience what you do. How about se�ng up an ac�vity with the kinds of refreshments you enjoy? The team here will support you to do that and provide a space for it to happen. So do get in touch.

Then, at the end of this week, it will be �me for, what has become, a rather popular tradi�on here at

Greenway - the community panto.

Now in its seventh year, this year it is that well-loved tale Cinderella, on Saturday 7th December. But these shows are never exactly tradi�onal.

They are modern, full of surprises, musical, topical, and hilarious making children and adults alike laugh their heads off! Oh yes they do!

So if you simply want connec�on in the warm, some friendly company, to join in with something interes�ng, specific support because you are in need or worried, or to come to a fun event, Greenway is a place for everyone.

SAT 9th NOV - FOR SINGLE PARENTS ��: ���� ������ ������ � ��������� ���� ��� ��������� ������

I

have been helping to run the Single Parents Fair now for over ten years and it is a highlight of the year because single parents tell us that it is a gi� for them. We understand that there is something about bringing up children single-handedly that can be challenging and even overwhelming at �mes, and I love that The Community Church recognises that and does something wonderful.

I see situa�ons where family is thin on the ground and finances are �ght and there is real need, and so this day of love and support means a lot to those who come. We try to think about what

would be par�cularly suppor�ve like providing professional level portrait photos because when there is only one parent who takes the photo of you and the kids? Or how is it possible to have the �me for a haircut or a hand massage ? Or how about a moment to have a cuppa and some homemade cake? Or where is the money for some clothes or a few extra toys for Christmas?

This day of love does all these things and more – advice stalls from agencies and chari�es, cra� rooms and inflatables for children, popcorn, even a special Christmas room where children can choose a li�le gi� for their parent for Christmas! Last year it was amazing to see the joy in parents faces knowing

their child had picked and wrapped a gi� just for them.

I am delighted and o�en humbled to work with the most amazing army of volunteers who work hard to say to one parent families: we not only see you, but we think you are doing the most amazing job!

Lastly, in case you are wondering about how all this happens, the whole church gets involved with all shapes of family and we love it. If you are paren�ng on your own, you are invited, and it is totally free.

e are delighted to introduce you to the new team for our new community service Greenway Learning & Wellbeing. Jodi → is our new team Manager, and brings a wealth of experience of suppor�ng people in the areas of their lives where they most need help, as does Shuma → who joins the team as the Wellbeing and Employment Coach. They are leading this new support service for residents in Southmead and North Bristol.

Greenway Learning & Wellbeing is here to support your holis�c health, wellbeing, and employment goals. We can help you with health and longterm health condi�ons, mood and mental wellbeing, housing, finances and debt, confidence, learning new skills, and much more. We can offer support with training opportuni�es, volunteering, or ge�ng into paid work. This can include interview prep and financial support for you to a�end interviews, job searching, IT skills, CV wri�ng, confidence building, and volunteering.

The service is open to anyone aged 16+. To arrange support, either contact us directly or ask a

professional to do this on your behalf. Once we have your details one of our friendly team will be in touch to get to know you a li�le be�er. You will then meet one of the team one-to-one to talk through what is going on for you, and about your needs and aims.

The team will support you at a pace that suits you. We can introduce you to different services and groups, help to create a personal wellbeing plan, and spend some �me talking through what ma�ers to you. This might mean you meet one of our team just a few �mes, or regularly on a longer-term basis.

A NEW LOOK AT GREENWAY GYM ��: ���� ������ ������� � ��������� �������, ��������� ��� �����

I

am so pleased and proud to let you all know that our mission to refurbish and revamp the Greenway Gym was finally completed at the end of the Summer. This included a lot of pain�ng to give the Gym a new look.

Thank you to everyone who chipped in to make it such a wonderful new space for health. We now have new equipment, signs, colours, music system, plus extra group classes on our �metable. We have also strengthened our health and safety procedures and have taken on new staff.

It really has been a long and bumpy road which has had its challenges, but now I really believe we have finally nailed it to make Greenway Gym, with its loyal members, a very strong compe�tor for other gyms in North Bristol. Lovely gym member Anne Street said, “I’ve turned seventy-one in the past year while being a member, and I can honestly say I feel so much be�er in terms of my fitness and physical strength, you have an amazing gym which I’ve seen improve more and more every month, keep up the great work”.

We had some fantas�c volunteers from Pieminister who kindly took �me out of their working day to throw on some overalls and give the gym its brand-new colour scheme – thank you to everyone at Pieminister. Without this team of super-stars we would have really struggled to get the final phase completed.

Other gym members have said: “The gym is spot on Joel, it couldn’t be any be�er” (Declan McManus); “I absolutely love the new colours, and the gym now has all the equipment you could possibly need” (Sarah Halle�); “You’ve done an amazing job!

It’s really made the gym go from good to amazing” (Michael Edwards); “What a great job you’ve done, a great choice of colour which gives it lots more warmth” (Brian Collins).

Our Health & Wellbeing Coach David can support you to take the first steps to improving your physical health, which goes hand in hand with your mental health, and we can help you find ways to support that too.

If you are recently re�red, or have a bit of �me on your hands, I would like to offer you free gym membership for one month between 10 AM and 3 PM daily. As long as you are receiving a state pension this offer is for you. As well as exercising in the gym, we have lots of friendly group fitness classes

O

ne of the things that o�en comes up in conversa�on and in our surveys is that people would like more cultural and food events. What could be be�er than an event that combines both?

A Peace Feast brings people together from different cultures around a meal. Stories are shared and understanding and friendships grow.

And we are having one in Southmead!

I am so excited that this is happening and even more excited to offer Southmead residents the chance to win some free �ckets.

AN INSPECTOR CALLS AT GREENWAY ��: �������� ������ D�������, ��������� �������

A few of the Southmead Players

A

n Inspector Calls is the latest produc�on from the Southmead Players, a community theatre company. We are rela�vely new, and we would love the support of residents to come and see the show produced by the community for the community.

The cast is made up of a mix of Southmead residents and University students and includes Elizabeth Madgwick, Arthur, Sarahanne MarshBrewer, Sharon Dudbridge, Kieron Edwards, Rhys Polis, and myself. This is our second produc�on, you may remember our first one – Rohin Hood – last January which was a huge success.

We are now looking forward to bringing An Inspector Calls to the Greenway Stage and share this play by J. B. Priestley. The story revolves around the apparent suicide of a young woman called Eva Smith. In the play, the unsuspec�ng Birling family are visited by the mysterious Inspector Goole. He arrives just as they are celebra�ng the engagement of Sheila Birling to Gerald Cro�. To find out more you will just have to come along!

Please join us on Saturday rd 23 November, at Greenway Centre, Doncaster Road, BS10 5PY. The show is suitable for ages 8 plus. Doors open at 12:30 PM and the show �me is 1 – 2:30 PM with an interval. REMEMBER THE SUMMER?! ��: ������� �����

W

ere you at the Southmead Fes�val back in July? Thank you to everyone who came and especially to those who helped to put on this fabulous and free event for our community. I absolutely loved it! The weather was perfect, and the vibes were so good. We had some great chats in Conversa�on Corner and there were some real local superstars on the Community Performance Stage.

Some people told us it was the best Fes�val yet! I do think it is the best one I have been to but it has been going for decades so you need to tell us what you think. We would love to know your favourite performance or ac�vity, and any thoughts we can take on board for next year.

An extra special thanks to Southmead’s Raffle Guru Shirley Neville. Shirley works so hard around the community to raise money for good causes by running the BS10 Bingo and Travelling Teapot events.

We are delighted that for this year’s Fes�val Shirley raised nearly £500 to go into the pot for next year.

You may have seen the Fes�val photo gallery on The Mead website (www.themead.org) – if not, do grab someone who can help you to view them on a digital device. We have squeezed in just a few, opposite, from the many great ones of residents who enjoyed the day.

As always, our wonderful Community Connector and volunteer Dawn (pictured in the gallery, top far le�) worked hard and had fun. She welcomed Fes�val goers through the door, handed out programmes, and kept us all going with her warmth and friendliness. Here is her rundown of the day . . .

Bill was tops, he played at the entrance so people coming and going could enjoy his music. Greenway Singers scored a hit, with the crowds joining in. I loved the Donkeys, Flora just loved being stroked and the sheep seemed very happy with the rabbits sleeping contentedly in the sunshine.

The Churches Together tent with face-pain�ng was wonderful for kids and grown-ups and the tea and biscuits went well with the chat. And lovely fruit from Travelling Kitchen- well done ladies!

The bands were brilliant, the dancers were very good and the keep fit was much appreciated. The merry go round and the free ac�vi�es were a good �me for the kids.

Lewis worked hard in the car park and our Steve li�er picked at the end. Thank you everyone in the Greenway community who made this possible. Looking forward to next year when the sun will shine on us once again.

Kids were given ‘Southmeadals’ for taking part in Olympic themed games (and the games carried on at The Ranch for the rest of the summer), Eduardo and Agnel (above) won free Greenway Gym memberships for smashing the �mings on the Olympic Assault Course, and Trish (above) won a £25 voucher for coming first place in the Olympic themed costume compe��on. If you have ideas for next year’s theme, let us know. And look out for next year’s date – we have been listening to feedback about the date and are trying not to clash with other fes�vals in 2025 - any thoughts about this are welcome.

FOOD, FUN, & FORAGING → ��: ����� �������� ���� ���� ������, ��� ����� ��������� ���������� � ����� �����

W

e started the Summer Holidays with a BANG – an end of School BBQ party on the last day of term. There was banners, balloons, music, and delicious food including halal meat so everyone could tuck in. One of our Ranch Dads, Graham, took charge of the cooking – huge thanks Graham! This celebra�on began six weeks of laughter, entertainment, learning, and lots and lots of hard work from our kind volunteers and brilliant staff team.

We carried on The Mead Olympic theme which began at the Southmead Fes�val. The kids competed in different Olympic style games to win their very own ‘Southmeadal’ and chocolately prizes. We had tugs of war, sack races, trampoline acroba�cs, footy tournaments, bike races, running races on a giant inflatable obstacle course, and a sandcastle compe��on. In years to come, if you find a special ‘Southmeadal’ at the back of a drawer, we hope it will take you back to Summer 2024 at The Ranch and the great memories we all made playing outside and having tons of fun.

Play sessions at The Ranch focus on being outside and Bristol’s wellloved wild food educator Steve England lead happy groups of foragers into beau�ful Badock’s Wood. The children hunted for blackberries to bring back to make compote, and

picked wild garlic to make garlic bu�er to go on their homemade French bread twists, which they cooked over The Ranch fire-pit.

Everyone thoroughly enjoyed gathering, preparing, cooking, and ea�ng their own food.

Our amazing professional partners Travelling Kitchen, run by Clare and Sarah, provided nutri�ous and hot lunches most days. At lunch�me we all sat and ate at tables laid with tablecloths.

This created a clean and calm space to just be in the present moment to share and enjoy food together. I loved the sound of the children talking and giggling while having their food – it enhanced The Ranch family vibe we all feel. The children had different fruit salads every day for dessert, and some lucky families even had boxes

of strawberries to take home! Once a week we had healthy packed lunches with carefully selected ingredients thanks to Café Des Amis at Greenway.

We are thankful to funding from the Holiday Ac�vi�es and Food programme which encourages ac�vi�es related to making and ea�ng healthy food. So, we discovered and tasted different types of melon (some of our children had never tasted another kind other than watermelon), we made our own fruity ice poles, as well as juices and squash – there was plenty to go round. The children also peddled their way to tasty fruit smoothies by taking turns on The Smoothie Bike which powers the fruit blender.

They also made their own milk shakes with extra ice-cream! Sarah and Clare from Travelling Kitchen taught everyone how to make pizzas from scratch from the dough to sprinkling on the herbs.

As well as this summer of making and tas�ng good food, there were lots of other kinds of workshops and adventures. Tash, from Each one Teach one UK helped the children to make bubble bath salts, body lo�ons, and lip balms, all from natural ingredients, and taught body and self-care. Life Cycle UK took a group of our boys on a bike ride to The Vench in Lockleaze so

they could enjoy doing tricks on the bike pump track. Gizmo the Clown entertained us and taught us circus skills. And of course, on hot days, the old-fashioned water slide came out so everyone could whizz along in the wet and cool off. We also went on a wonderful trip to visit the SS Great Britain and learn about Brunel – it was a great day out for everyone.

Not only was the Summer a success for younger kids, but our young people aged thirteen plus had a great �me at their evening sessions. A�er ac�vi�es for young people moved round to The Ranch from the old Southmead Youth Centre on Arnside, sessions for this age group have got be�er and be�er. Our Youth Engagement Manager Del is incredibly passionate about working alongside young people to listen to the kinds of ac�vi�es they

want to take part in, and supports them to find paths to meaningful futures. He has now added another session to run three each week for young people.

Some of this work is via music and ← Del is currently focussed on enhancing the music and recording studio at The Ranch.

I must add that we took our youth group to Laser Quest in town for their Summer trip to play some energe�c laser tag games, and the staff beat the young people – go staff!

I am so proud of our staff team, not just for the Laser Quest win, but for their dedica�on, devo�on, and hard work to make sure all children and young people in Southmead are given the opportunity to go to a safe, welcoming, and exci�ng place – a�er school, in the holidays, and in the evenings – with ac�vi�es and food

provided. I am really proud to be part of this team. And we would not be anywhere without our valued volunteers – a huge thanks to all of them for the great summer sessions and for their con�nued hard work, enthusiasm and support.

We now have 500 children and young people registered on our system and to know we can make a difference in their lives is awesome we believe that each and every one of them deserves a place like The Ranch, just for them.

Finally, I want to share the good news with you that we have a new Manager for The Ranch, Ma�. You may have just met him during our Autumn Half-term sessions. He brings a huge wealth of experience and is so excited about building on the successes at The Ranch.

If you are coming to a session say hello to ← Ma� and let him know your ideas about how we can keep on improving Southmead’s well-loved and special place for children and young people and help it go from strength to strength.

PLAYING OUT IN SOUTHMEAD ��: ������� �����

P

laying Out is a grassroots organisa�on which started on a Bristol street and is now a na�onal movement for long term change. If you are as old as me then you will remember playing out as something which just happened, a�er school and homework, during the holidays especially. These days children play out a lot less although they need it just as much.

A Playing Out session is a couple of hours with the road closed (stewarded by residents) where children can play freely, and other residents can connect. There is a simple process to get this going including cha�ng to your neighbours and ge�ng permission from the Council to close the road, then le�ng everyone know about it.

We now have a Playing Out kit here at the Greenway Centre for you to borrow when you would like it. This includes Road Closed signs, cones, and high vis vests, plus bits and bobs for playing like skipping ropes and chalk.

It is free although we will ask for a small deposit, and we encourage everyone to take advantage of this opportunity to make our streets livelier and more connected. his year The Bluebell Nursery celebrates its ten-year anniversary at the Greenway Centre.

Owner, Izabela, started the nursery back in 2014, with plenty of support from her two children. She has always been very passionate about teaching and wanted to bring her knowledge and passion of quality childcare to the Southmead area.

The nursery was originally situated in the Green Rooms building (once the canteen when Greenway was a school), but earlier this year, due to this building being renovated, the nursery relocated to the main Greenway Centre building. The nursery is now right next to the Greenway Gym and Café Des Amis. Even be�er, the nursery’s view looks directly across the Greenway field, over to the lovely Badock’s Wood nature reserve, where the children are o�en taken on special guided trips so they can look at wildlife, which, in turn, inspires their love of nature.

The Bluebell nursery is mul�lingual, with teachers from different ethnic backgrounds, which, in turn, is reflected by the range of na�onali�es (for example, Portuguese, Sudanese, Bulgarian, Spanish, and Polish), represented through the children themselves.

The nursery is influenced by different models of childcare, par�cularly those first implemented by the Reggio Emilia nurseries, which place great importance on the influence of the environment and natural explora�on.

Children a�ending the nursery also have weekly access to a so�-play and the outdoor playground at The Ranch Adventure Playground & Youth Space.

Addi�onally, the nursery has a garden area where children can

engage in a variety of learning opportuni�es.

With space for forty children, the nursery welcomes all children aged from 0 to 5 years old, including those families in receipt of government-funded childcare (15 or 30 funded hours per week).
