CHEMICAL NEWS THYSSENKRUPP BAGS CONTRACT FROM ATUL FOR CAUSTIC SODA PLANT Basic chemicals and derivatives manufacturer, Atul Limited, has selected ThyssenKrupp Industrial Solutions (formerly Uhde India) to render engineering, lumpsum supply of cell elements and site supervision services for their caustic soda conversion project at Valsad in Gujarat. The project envisages the conversion of Atul's existing mercury cell caustic soda facility at Atul near Valsad, Gujarat and to set-up a 75 tpd membrane cell facility.

The capacity of the plant will be expandable to 100 tpd. The scope of services includes basic/ detailed engineering, project management services and procurement services, inspection and expediting services for critical items, supply of imported proprietary membrane cell elements and site supervision services during start-up and commissioning. BASF reported a slight increase in third-quarter Ebitda to €2.52 billion ($3.19 billion) compared with €2.49 billion in the year-earlier quarter. Earnings before interest and tax (Ebit) before special items were 8.9% higher at €1.84 billion but net income declined 4.8% to €1.04 billion. Sales rose 3.3% to €18.31 billion. A sharp rise in volumes in the natural gas trading business was mainly responsible for this growth. BASF is divesting this operation by the end of this year. Dow Chemical posted net income of $852 million, up 43% from the year-ago quarter, led by strong gains in performance materials, performance plastics, and electronic materials. Revenues were up 4.9%, to $14.4 billion.

LyondellBasell reports third-quarter net income of $1.3 billion, up 48% YOY from $851 million. Sales totaled $12.1 billion, an 8% YOY increase. Air Liquide has reported that its third-quarter revenue was €3.8 billion ($4.81 billion), up 1% YOY on a reported basis and 4.3% YOY on a comparable basis. AkzoNobel reported a 32% rise in third-quarter net income, to €205.0 million ($262.9 million), on 2% lower sales of €3.69 billion. While lower crude prices may compress margins for ethane-based crackers globally, even with crude oil at $80/bbl ethane-based crackers in the Americas maintain first- and second-quartile cost positions. Westlake plans to invest over $330 million to expand ethylene capacity at its facility in Lake Charles, LA, by 250 million lbs/year and to make other capital improvements. The company expects to complete the expansion in late 2015 or early 2016.Oil prices resumed their deep downward march on Wednesday, with US crude again nearing $80/barrel after data showing a second big jump in weekly US crude stockpiles broke a brief period of tentative consolidation. Similarly, India's largest agrochemicals manufacturing company, Insecticides (India) Ltd (IIL) has announced a 66 per cent increase in net profit for quarter ending September 30, 2014. IIL's net profit grew to Rs 22.93 crore from Rs 13.84 crore over the corresponding period last year on the back of encouraging response to its newly launched products and stable production at the new Dahej plant.

Commenting on the company's performance, Rajesh Aggarwal, Managing Director, IIL, said, "The increase in net profit is very encouraging for us in the scenario.

The company's net turnover rose to Rs 402 crores in the quarter from Rs 340 crores in the same quarter last year, recording a 18 per cent increase.The basic and diluted EPS this quarter stood at Rs. 18.08 as against Rs. 10.91 in the corresponding period last year. The chemical sector in the country has been performing better compared to earlier years, and investors have begun to pose faith in the sector.
