FROM THE DESK OF THE PRINCIPAL
Fall 2014 Dear Alumnae, Parents and Friends, I am happy to write to you again at the beginning of another exciting year at The Mary Louis Academy! I am pleased to report that contributions to TMLA during the past year totaled over $1.1 million. This total reflects a very generous gift made towards our Music Program. We are very grateful for your continued support. The Class of 2018 has officially begun this school year as members of the TMLA community. These young women and their families chose TMLA because of our long and rich history as “THE” college preparatory academy for young women. To provide them with an education that matches their ambitions is a responsibility which we do not take lightly. In this publication you will see a wide range of our students’ and alumnae’s achievements. TMLA remains committed to our proud legacy of excellence in education that nurtures the whole person by integrating faith and life. All of this is made possible with your help. During the summer we made significant investments in our campus and buildings. TMLA has expanded to make use of the beautiful building that had been the Mary Louis Convent. Extensive renovation and repurposing of the building have provided us with an additional 12,500 square feet of space for our expanding academic and service programs. In our Main Building, a very generous donation from the family of Audrey Prager MacLean 46 to enhance our music program enabled us to remodel and dedicate our new Music Conservatory. Thank you for all that you do for The Mary Louis Academy. It is our goal to help our students appreciate their womanhood, to develop their gifts, to understand that they are worthy of the best education and that they are empowered to make a difference in the world. Your generosity demonstrates that you believe in them: that you believe in The Mary Louis Academy. Thank you so very much for all of your prayers and support. May God continue to bless you and your family. Sincerely,
S. Kathleen McKinney CSJ, Ed.D. Principal

Stained glass window depicting St. Joseph, installed on the main staircase of St. Joseph’s Convent, the Sisters of St. Joseph’s Motherhouse in Brentwood. This window was donated by the grown orphans from St. John’s Home for Boys in Brooklyn, in memory of their long-serving Directress, Mother Mary de Chantal Keating CSJ. Mother de Chantal was renowned for founding and operating a Union Army hospital in Wheeling, WV during the Civil War. Countless numbers of wounded and dying soldiers received care at the hands of Mother de Chantal and her fellow sisters. Upon her passing in 1917 Mother de Chantal’s contribution to the Union war effort was posthumously honored by the United States government with a veteran’s headstone placed on her grave in Mount St. Mary’s Cemetery in Flushing, NY.

KEY NOTE ADDRESS TO THE GRADUATES AT THE 2O14 COMMENCEMENT EXERCISES OF THE MARY LOUIS ACADEMY Congratulations, graduates, to you and your families on your wonderful achievement today! Thirty-three years ago, I sat where you are now sitting. I have to wonder what’s on your minds today. Maybe you know exactly what you want and exactly how to get there. And that’s wonderful. But I have to tell you: when I sat in that seat, I really had no idea what life had in store for me. I knew I was going to college, but I didn’t have a clue about what I would ultimately do. All throughout my childhood, my father would ask me: “What do you want to do? Do something you love!” My dad gave me great encouragement, but it almost felt like pressure – I didn’t know what I wanted to do –and worried there was something “wrong” with me. You know what? It turned out okay in the end. The key thing is to keep an open mind and reach for opportunities when you see them. Don’t hold back. Don’t hold yourself back – that’s probably the biggest challenge for you. From Mary Louis, I went on to Fairfield and majored in math. Enjoyed it, but wanted to do something more practical and more tangible. So, I entered graduate school in public health. Which left my family asking: what on earth is public health? I think the best way to describe public health is this: In the same way that a doctor treats an individual patient, public health professionals “treat” entire communities in order to advance the health of all. How do we do that? We study what makes people healthy. Think about what affects your health. Can you think of anything that’s “bad” for you? Good for you? HOW DO YOU KNOW? You know largely because of public health research. Who here has ever had a vaccination? Put on a seat belt? Who has ever put a helmet on a child before bike riding? All of that is public health. So I cannot resist putting in a “plug” for my field to this accomplished, bright group of young women. Think about public health as a career. It’s about serving others, which fits very well, I think, with the perspectives you have gained at Mary Louis. So I found my niche. How will you find yours?
we are often afraid. For every big decision I’ve ever made, I’ve been terrified. I’ll say it again: it’s okay to be afraid. Just don’t let fear paralyze you. There is a wonderful young man who works for me. He came to me about 3 years ago, when we first started working together. He told me that he dreaded making a mistake and letting me down. I told him very clearly: the only people who have done nothing wrong in the past year are the people who have done NOTHING in the past year. I told him it’s okay to be afraid – but keep moving ahead. When you are facing a tough challenge, as you will many times in your life, remember this: You know a lot. Use your knowledge. Analyze each situation from every angle. Seek input from those you trust and admire. THEN ACT. Give it your best shot, even though you are afraid. Expect to be wrong sometimes; that’s okay. And when you make a mistake, as you inevitably will, gather yourself together again, forgive yourself, and move on. Expect to be wrong, and do better next time. Now, this is a very happy day. But know that there will be days in your life when you are really up against the ropes – because of your work, your family, your health, and some day perhaps, your children. There will be heartbreak. There will be times when you are feeling so low and so broken, you think you will never recover. But I promise you – you will. It takes time. Maybe a month, or 6 months, or even a whole year. But you will recover, and you will smile again, and you will go on to do more great things. And throughout your life, you will be relying on the skills and knowledge you gained in high school and beyond. But at those low times, you have something even more important: the principles that were instilled in you at TMLA. Let me see if I have it right: “unity, reconciliation, and allinclusive love”. These will be your mainstay, your compass, in the worst storms that life presents to you. Those are guideposts that will give you strength for the long haul. So no matter where you go from here, whether to college or to work, whatever you choose to do – do it well, take pride in it, prepare to be afraid and then move past it: because you’re ready. Good luck!
By going out and learning, observing lots of options, trying things out. Today is graduation day. You’ve proven yourselves smart, strong, and capable – combined with a core set of values that you will have for the rest of your life. You have so much ahead of you.
(Dr. Melissa Dowd Begg 81 is Professor of Biostatistics and Vice-Provost for Educational Programs at Columbia University. Dr. Begg also serves as Co-Director of the Irving Institute for Clinical & Translational Research at Columbia and currently sits on the Board of Trustees of The Mary Louis Academy.)
What’s your biggest obstacle? Oddly enough, it’s probably you. Despite your accomplishments, you might lack confidence. You might be afraid. You might be afraid of being wrong. My biggest message to you: fear is okay. Fear means you are smart and recognize when there is risk. Those of us in the room who are older and more experienced will let you in on a little secret:

VALEDICTORIAN S ADDRESS own and passions we did not share. We understand that this world will continue to expand before our eyes. We can choose to be empowered by the fact that even though we are all just one element in the “play” of life, as coauthors, no one person is more significant in the large scheme of things, but we are all independently integral. We can choose to lead lives that are unique and meaningful. As graduates of TMLA we carry with us the values of unity, reconciliation, and all-inclusive love; we can shape our verses with those three beliefs above all. We have also learned the value of service as part of our TMLA culture. Our verses will continue to be healing and influential, and grow to become so much more. Please, let us not think about our lives as our burdens or see the welfare of this world as our omnipresent responsibility. Let us think of them as our incredible chances to say something. We have learned that our voices are important and that we in turn can empower others. Yet still, we might ask - how do we know that our individual lives, our small efforts, can be significant? Let us look at the people around us. We have seen how often a few words from a TMLA teacher or friend have altered our perceptions of our worlds and ourselves. We have seen how others’ individual verses of love and genuine care have impacted us. We can be inspired by the values of TMLA’s administration, Good Morning Sister Kathleen McKinney, Sister Filippa Luciano, Mrs. Ann Cordes, Sister Helen Kearney, Mrs. Marie Whelan, Ms. Heather Maloney, Dr. Melissa Dowd Begg, Faculty, Families, Friends and Class of 2014. I feel honored to be the representative voice for the young women alongside whom I have grown and who have simultaneously acted as friends and wise teachers in my life. Class of 2014, through every single moment we shared as members of the TMLA community, we came to realize how much vaster the world is than we thought it was when we were younger. In his poem “O me, O life”, Walt Whitman proposes why our interconnected existence, despite life’s difficulties, is so beautiful. Whitman affirms that what is “good” is “That you are here – that life exists and identity, that the powerful play goes on, and you may contribute a verse.” The reality is that every person here today continues to receive a greater taste daily of how incredibly awesome this “powerful play” is. At TMLA, we directly learned about the multitudes of perspectives in this world through our academic experiences, such as in world history as freshwomen, and our extracurricular activities, such as at Mary Louis’ Cultural Harmony Festival. Moreover, we learned indirectly as we formed friendships, as we looked around even on mere subway rides. We realized that we lived beside and loved people who possessed certain beliefs different from our
CLASS OF 2014 THROUGH EVERY SINGLE MOMENT WE SHARED AS MEMBERS OF THE TMLA COMMUNITY, WE CAME TO REALIZE HOW MUCH VASTER THE WORLD IS THAN WE THOUGHT IT WAS WHEN WE WERE YOUNGER. faculty and staff as well as by the support from our own families and friends. Their great acts of love and sacrifice have sustained and stirred us. Whitman’s quote treats life as a gift and recognizes that we are coauthors in the play of life in which each person is immeasurably significant. As we look forward and celebrate our commencement from TMLA, let us remember our capabilities to improve the “play”, our world. Thank you. , DEIRDRE WALDRON O5
Deirdre Waldron, a member of TMLA’s Class of 2005, is not only a woman of vision and dignity; she is a woman of service. Deirdre’s unfailing commitment to volunteering among those less fortunate truly embodies the Mary Louis spirit of inclusion and giving back to the world around her. “I had a lot of opportunities to volunteer while I was at Mary Louis and definitely took advantage of as much as I could. NHS and Student Council offered many opportunities for service; I recall especially time spent at Saint Mary’s Children’s Hospital. In my senior year, I was able to coordinate a food drive with City Harvest and TMLA. As a member of TMLA’s Adopt -A-Grandparent club, I enjoyed diverse opportunities for service.” As an undergraduate at Saint Joseph’s, a Jesuit University in Philadelphia focused on service work, Deirdre tried to get involved as much as she could in the many volunteer opportunities they provided during her 4 years there. These opportunities included many trips as part of construction crews for Habitat for Humanity, trips to Appalachian regions in Kentucky and Virginia, an eyeopening experience since there was such an extreme level of poverty so close to home. In 2008 Deirdre led a service immersion trip to Duran, Ecuador through Rostro de Cristo where her group lived in the community with the local people. The group lived off $1 a day and spent their two weeks visiting members of the community and playing with the children. They spent time with people who were in the leprosy clinic and listened to their life-stories. Deirdre feels that she
learned so much from this trip, “Seeing how happy and beautiful these people were really made me put my life into perspective. Here were people who had to struggle for food and shelter and they were ten times happier than a lot of people back home. It made me rethink getting frustrated about not knowing what to wear out on a Saturday night! I realized that material things do not matter and that it is the simple things in life that inevitably lead to love and happiness.” During her college years Deirdre found different types of volunteer experiences with Melmark Shoemaker After-School Program where she played games and ran activities for children with profound disabilities and head injuries. Actors without Boundaries offered another level of experience when Deirdre volunteered with children who had cerebral palsy and helped them put together performances. In 2009 at her graduation from St. Joe’s, Deirdre was honored to receive the prestigious Saint Joseph’s University Student Service Award. With a degree from St. Joseph’s in Elementary/Special Education, Deirdre worked from 2009 to 2013 as a Special Ed teacher at Stepping Stone Day School in Queens, NY. In 2013 Deirdre graduated from Saint John’s University, Queens, NY with an Ms. Ed in Clinical Mental Health Counseling. This education led Deirdre to become a 1st grade special education teacher in the NYC Department of Education.

Deirdre feels that all of her volunteer experiences impacted her life, but 2 are especially important to her. For the past 11 summers, Deirdre has spent multiple weeks volunteering at camps held at the Marist Brothers Retreat House located in Esopus, NY, a small town on the Hudson River. Each week has a different population of children/adults with special needs. There used to be a week for children with HIV from Harlem Hospital; this ended in 2012 because the population of children being born with HIV has rapidly decreased! That was Deirdre’s favorite week of the year for 9 years! The campers and fellow volunteers who go to Esopus year after year have grown to love each other as if they were family members. There Deirdre has met some of her closest friends and friends who will be life-long. The volunteers have developed a closeness that cannot be explained and she truly feels so blessed and lucky to have all of them in her life. Many people do not understand why Deirdre and her friends go to Esopus on their summer vacations when they could be at the beach or out traveling the world, but it makes sense to them and that’s all that matters. This is a prime example of how volunteering can impact and truly change your life for the better. Post-undergrad it was very hard for Deirdre to get involved in volunteer opportunities besides going to Esopus in the summer time. She was teaching full-time and going to graduate school in the evenings full-time. With so much on her plate Deirdre promised herself that when she was done with school she would go on a trip somewhere to volunteer!
Deirdre decided to go to Kenya, Africa this past summer of 2014. Deirdre booked her trip and got on a plane- not really knowing what to expect. She spent the next two weeks volunteering at a special needs boarding school through an organization called African Impact. While she was there Deirdre worked with the teachers and educated them on new techniques for teaching children with these various needs, implemented visual schedules for some of the non-verbal students and worked on small-group teaching. Deirdre sums up her experience in Kenya by saying “I wish I could have stayed for a longer period of time, but it just motivates me to go back! “ When asked what she would like to impart to the young women at TMLA today Deirdre said “Volunteer work is something that will always be in my life. It keeps me grounded and focused on what is important. Through volunteering I have gained a lot of insight and perspective into a world that is filled with so much good. I am so fortunate to have had all of these great experiences and will hopefully get the opportunity to have many more. I encourage all of the students and graduates of Mary Louis to volunteer and give back to the world around you; it truly will make a difference not only in the lives of others, but in your own life as well”.

TMLA... A FAITH COMMUNITY our community of faith.
The spiritual theme of the 2013-2014 academic year was “Gifted and Called to Unity, Reconciliation and All Inclusive Love.” Throughout the year, all of our spiritual life initiatives sought to bring out the God-given gifts that are in each of us so that we may be our best selves and contribute to our world in faith, service and love. TMLA strives to have a vibrant Liturgical Ministry. As a Catholic Academy, we celebrate Mass daily and encourage our students to get involved in various ministries. The young women of TMLA serve our liturgical ministries by assisting in orchestrating Mass, participating as lectors, altar servers, gift bearers, musicians and ministers of hospitality. This past academic year 10 students were installed as Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion. They will now serve our community and their parishes as well. We completed the third year of our Sacrament Seekers program. Throughout the year five of our young women were catechized by TMLA’s Campus Minister, Chairperson of the Department of Religious Studies and other members of the TMLA community including past Sacrament Seekers and faculty members. This program enables our students to grow in faith and in community as they prepare for various Sacraments of Initiation. The program culminated in the spring of 2014 when our candidates received the Sacrament of Confirmation. We were blessed to welcome them into
In October 2013 TMLA celebrated our first Founder’s Day! With a celebration of Mass in the morning, short and special facts throughout the day about the six initial women who founded the congregation, posters with images around the building, and a sweet French dessert at lunch, our community was able to celebrate and honor the brave and faith-filled women of France who became the Sisters of St. Joseph. In the fall, Campus Ministry held an Interfaith Worship Walk where we traveled on foot to a Buddhist Temple, Muslim Mosque, and a Catholic Church. Twelve students moved from sacred space to sacred space on foot. At each stop, the group prayed together, learned together, and experienced how various faith traditions practice their religion. This pilgrimage of faith was such a beautiful and meaningful way to deepen our awareness of God and the faith lives of our brothers and sisters. It’s always great to see faith in action and this year the CSJ Leaders Club ran a significant campaign called “Spread the Word to End the Word.” During level meetings students learned about this initiative that seeks to end the use of the word “retarded” from our vernacular and at lunches students, using their iPads, signed a world-wide pledge choosing to stop using this word. Our faith teaches that we ought to love all human beings and that we’re to recognize each
person’s dignity and worth, along with seeing the unique and special gifts each person has to offer our blessed world. It brought such great hope and joy to see the wonderful response from our community supporting this campaign. Our second Mission Week was a great success! Again, we kicked off our week of Mission-based awareness and celebrations with our annual Communion Breakfast. Each year we hold a beautiful student-led liturgy where family and friends join our school community for a joyful celebration of Mass and then a delicious and fun breakfast! We hope you can join us this year! This year, throughout Mission Week, the CSJ Leaders Club worked hard to orchestrate events for our school community to deepen its awareness of the Congregation of the Sisters of St. Joseph, their spiritual roots and their mission of Love, Unity and Reconciliation, which sustains The Mary Louis Academy. Highlights included Mix-It-Up Day, learning about the Mission through Maxims of the Congregation, and a Faculty Fashion Show! Students came to see their teachers and staff members reveal the TMLA uniform “through the ages!” This event was an energetic, community building and very fun (and funny!) way to round out the 2014 Mission Week.

SUSTAINER DONORS Donors in the Sustainer Program provide TMLA with their credit or debit card information and authorize Mary Louis to deduct an amount of their choosing once a week or once a month. Many find this to be an easier way to donate without having to remember to send in a check, this also may allow you to give a larger cumulative gift than you might otherwise be able to make at one time. We would like to extend our gratitude to those who have chosen to become Sustainer Donors.

THANK YOU FOR GRANTS RECEIVED Grants from foundations are an especially essential form of support for TMLA. Grants help to fund many of our most dynamic programs. Many grant making institutions will not accept unsolicited applications from outside parties, therefore if you or someone you know is connected with a foundation please recommend The Mary Louis Academy as a potential grant recipient.
The Mary Louis Academy gratefully acknowledges the following restricted grants: Brooklyn Benevolent Society - $12,000 George Link Foundation: $15,000 The Brooklyn Benevolent Society and the George Link Foundation generously awarded TMLA a combined total of $27,000 in grant monies. These grants are to be used to provide tuition assistance for students who demonstrate need. Josephine Foundation - $1,000 The Josephine Foundation: Follow Your Dreams grant program awarded TMLA a $1,000 grant. This grant is being used to underwrite some of the costs of our Genesians productions. Wallace Foundation - $175,000 The Wallace Foundation awarded TMLA a very generous $175,000 grant. Through this grant juniors and seniors have a full time college counselor, in addition to their guidance counselor, who helps chart their paths up to and after graduation. Additionally, students work with independent college consultants. SAT preparation courses, taught by instructors from a nationally recognized college prep program,
are offered to all juniors and seniors on campus at TMLA. Eligible students take affordable, overnight bus trips to visit prestigious East Coast colleges, including Yale, Princeton, Georgetown, Brown, MIT, Boston College, and Harvard. Thanks to this grant our students are well prepared for life after TMLA.
The Mary Louis Academy gratefully acknowledges the following unrestricted grants: Unrestricted grants provide invaluable assistance in helping us fulfill our budgetary expenses. We thank the following private foundations for their generosity: Patchett Family Fund: $13,000 Stritter Foundation: $1,000 The Irving T. Bush Foundation: $10,000

REGIONAL RECEPTION Over the last several years TMLA alumnae have hosted regional receptions in Florida, New York City, New Jersey, California, Connecticut, the DC Capital District, Maryland, Long Island, Westchester and the Albany Capital Region. These receptions serve to help TMLA alumnae “reconnect” with Mary Louis. These events have proved to be a wonderful way for TMLA alumnae who live in the same area to meet each other, connect with fellow Mary Louis women and also learn about what’s happening at TMLA today. We believe the Mary Louis community extends far beyond the geographic boundaries of our hilltop. No matter where you live you remain a member of the TMLA family. We are all united by memories, traditions and a strong belief in the education of women of vision and dignity. This year the Sisters of St. Joseph hosted a lovely event for TMLA alumnae at St. Joseph’s Villa, their vacation retreat on Shinnecock Bay in Hampton Bays. We thank them for their warm and gracious hospitality. If you would be interested in hosting a Regional Reception near your home please contact the Office of Academy Advancement at 718.267.21.20 x286 or Advancement@tmla.org

CAMPUS HISTORY In 1909 the Honorable Morgan J. O’Brien, Sr., Presiding Justice of the New York Supreme Court, purchased a lot in the newly planned community of Jamaica Estates. Judge O’Brien purchased 10 acres “…running approximately 400 feet along Wexford Terrace with Dalny Road wrapping around on the North and West sides”. Judge O’Brien commissioned a mansion be built on the property as a wedding present for his eldest daughter, Genevieve O’Brien Fox (a schoolmate and bridesmaid of Cathleen Vanderbilt), and her husband E. Lyttleton Fox (a prominent attorney who took part in the famous contestation of the Jay Gould Estate). The mansion was constructed according to plans by William A. Bates, architect of the main building at Sarah Lawrence College. He was also famed for being the architect known as the “builder of Bronxville”. The mansion was designed in the Mediterranean Revival style with white stucco walls, a terra cotta tile roof, arched French doors throughout the first floor, leading to brick terraces covered in awnings, and French doors leading to wrought iron balconies off all the second floor bedrooms. There was an open air courtyard with a fountain, terraced gardens and a tennis court (present site of the Senior Lawn). A conservatory was constructed alongside the west terrace (present site of the convent chapel). A separate carriage house was constructed to the rear of the mansion with a caretaker’s apartment above (present day Advancement Cottage). At a later date the Foxes constructed a detached garage with three bays (a portion of the present day Art Cottage). The Foxes named the estate “Rose Crest”. Between 1920 – 1930 Genevieve & Lyttleton Fox sold 5 acres of the estate (north and west of the mansion) back to the Jamaica Estates Company who constructed eight single family homes on the new lots (three of which are the present day White Cottage, Formation Cottage and St. Joseph House). Shortly thereafter the Foxes sold the remainder of Rose Crest to Mrs. Rose Adikes, widow of John Adikes one of the founders of Jamaica Savings Bank. Mrs. Adikes resided at Rose Crest with two servants for less than 10 years until 1932 when she was approached by Mother Mary Louis Crummey CSJ – General Superior of the Sisters of St. Joseph. Mother Mary Louis expressed an interest in purchasing the estate for the establishment of a college preparatory academy for young women… and the rest is "herstory"!
THE HONORABLE , MORGAN O BRIEN Born April 28, 1852 in New York City, the son of Irish immigrants, Morgan J. O’Brien earned degrees from the College of St. Francis Xavier (now Xavier High School), St. John’s College (now Fordham University), and Columbia University Law School. He was admitted to the bar in 1875 and went on to become a successful and well respected attorney, being appointed as corporation counsel for New York City in 1887. Later that year Mr. O’Brien was elected to a 14-year term as a Justice of the New York State Supreme Court. He was only 35 years old, the youngest person at the time to be elected to that position. Justice O’Brien was appointed to the General Term of the Supreme Court in 1892 by Governor Hill. When the Appellate Division was established in 1895, Justice O’Brien was named one of its first members by Governor Morton. He was re-elected to the Supreme Court in 1901 and re-designated to the Appellate Division. In 1905, Governor Higgins elevated him to the position of Presiding Justice of the Appellate Division, First Department. ,WHO SAYS YOU CAN T GO HOME AGAIN?
On September 14, 1936 The Mary Louis Academy opened our doors. It may surprise some of you to learn that those first doors were not on Wexford Terrace but instead on Edgerton Boulevard! From 1936-1938 TMLA’s first home was in the double parlors of the Convent on our campus; it is thus fitting that 78 years later we’ve moved back home! In the fall of 2011, the number of Sisters residing in the Mary Louis Convent had dwindled to the point where it was no longer feasible for them to maintain such a large residence. The remaining Sisters moved to neighboring convents and the Sisters of St. Joseph turned the convent building over to TMLA for The Academy’s use. Prior to this, in 2004, one wing of the Convent had been renovated and converted by TMLA for use as additional classrooms and office space. During the summer of 2014 extensive renovations and repairs occurred on the 105 year old Convent (originally the Rose Crest mansion), to accommodate TMLA’s expansion into the building. The architecturally beautiful Convent adds more than 12,500 square feet of space to The Mary Louis Academy’s facilities and now houses many wonderful new spaces for our students; these include a Student Lounge, Painting Solarium, Service Homeroom Center, Mathematics Lab, "Cooking for College" Culinary Lab, Robotics/Engineering Lab, new classrooms, office space as well as a return to our original, larger Chapel. The architecturally exquisite Chapel, designed in the Spanish Mission style, doubles the size of our worship space! We are so very grateful for the generosity of the Sisters of St. Joseph and our wonderful benefactors who made this exciting expansion possible!

TMLA HITS A HIGH NOTE In October of 2013, Audrey Prager MacLean, a member of TMLA’s Class of 1946, passed away. Audrey’s family chose to memorialize her generous spirit and lifetime love of music by dedicating The Mary Louis Academy Music Complex in her memory. The Music Complex (constructed in 1957 in the original Dining Hall) underwent extensive renovations and remodeling during the summer of 2014. These renovations have resulted in our beautiful new Audrey Prager MacLean Music Conservatory. The new conservatory houses sound-proofed practice rooms, a choral library, storage room for musical instruments, faculty offices and more! The Choral & Orchestra Hall was transformed with a new ceiling, sound proofed walls, new furnishings, ceiling fans and a state of the art vocal playback system to enhance our voice program. Faculty offices were refurnished, upright pianos were restored and all five Steinway baby grands were professionally refinished and retuned. In addition to the renovation and naming of the Music Conservatory, the MacLean family’s gift has established the Audrey Prager MacLean Vocal Scholar Award. This award is granted in 3 year increments to a student who displays exceptional vocal potential. This student will receive professional vocal coaching once a cycle and will attend an annual performance at the Metropolitan Opera. We would like to offer our tremendous gratitude to the MacLean family for their incredible generosity to TMLA. We are so honored to be entrusted with continuing Audrey’s legacy and love of music. Please know that Audrey’s spirit will live on through the many wonderful opportunities you have made possible for our young women.
Audrey Prager was born in Brooklyn on July 7, 1926. After her father’s death at an early age, Audrey put herself through The Mary Louis Academy, working in the rectory of her local parish in return for the pastor paying her tuition. All the while Audrey helped take care of her mother who was ill and her younger brother. Upon graduating from TMLA in 1946 Audrey went on to train at the Metropolitan Opera in Manhattan. An exceptionally gifted opera singer, Audrey retired from her singing career to raise her family. In 1948, Audrey married Victor MacLean at St. John’s Church in New York City. The MacLeans made their home in Woodside, Queens and Warwick, NY for many years before retiring to the town of Fishkill, NY. A communicant of St. Mary, Mother of the Church in Fishkill she served on the Parish Council and volunteered as a Eucharistic Minister. Audrey was invited to serve on Cardinal Timothy Dolan’s Stewardship Committee and was also very active with the board at Fox Ridge Condominiums, where she was Vice President for 17 years until 2012. Audrey passed away after a brief illness on October 26, 2013. She was predeceased by her husband, Victor, daughter Virginia, two infant sons as well as her two sisters and brother. She is survived by 9 children, 24 grandchildren, several great-grandchildren and thousands of her TMLA “sisters”.

ALS ICE BUCKET CHALLENGE
TMLA alumna, Jenn Flynn Quinn 03 and her husband Pat Quinn, are two of the creators of the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge that swept social media outlets across the globe. This has been a tremendously successful campaign raising funds and awareness for ALS, a devastating illness that affects as many as 30,000 people, in the U.S. alone.
Jenn and Pat reached out to Pete Frates, their friend in Boston who also has ALS, and together they came up with the idea of bringing the challenge to social media and each nominating 50 of their friends to participate. In the summer of 2014, Jenn, Pat and Pete launched the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge. The campaign quickly went viral and has become an internet phenomenon. Millions of people across the world have participated in the challenge, including movie stars, professional athletes and even
former U.S. Presidents! As of today the challenge has raised over $100 million for ALS research and awareness!! Jenn and Pat have been recognized and featured in USA Today, Good Morning America, NBC News, CBS News and were named "Queens Persons of the Week" by NY1 News. In addition Jenn and Pat have generously agreed to come to TMLA and speak to our students about ALS and help to put a face on the true meaning of the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge.
Pat was diagnosed with ALS in March of 2013 and quickly made it his mission to spread awareness about this rare and debilitating disease. Pat and Jenn established Quinn for the Win, a non-profit foundation which spreads awareness about ALS and helps to raise funds for research towards treatment and a future cure. In 2014 Pat and Jenn witnessed people in Pelham, New York participating in an Ice Bucket Challenge on an individual basis, to raise awareness for a variety of charitable causes. They realized this would be a catchy and fun way to raise awareness for ALS. 57

FROM THE TOP OF THE HILL, YOU CAN SEE THE WORLD... On Febuary 10, 2014 Dr. Helena Kane-Finn 63 returned to TMLA to speak with our students about her experiences as a career diplomat. in our class of three exchange students from Northern Italy. For all of this, I am very grateful Graduates of The Mary Louis Academy have had the privilege of a superb education. That privilege comes with an important responsibility. We have the responsibility to do good in the world. Doing good starts at home with the life we lead every day and our interactions with our family, friends and neighbors. Dear Students, Dear Faculty, it is a great honor and a great pleasure to return to The Mary Louis Academy after far too long a time. Over the years since my own graduation in 1963, I have often been struck by the value of the education I had at TMLA. I will never forget our classes on Chaucer with Sister Dorothy Mercedes who taught us to enjoy the “vicarious experience” of literature, or our classes on the Civil War with Ms. Lucas who helped us to understand the deep divisions in our society over slavery. I recall learning how to “find a suitable place for a military encampment” by reading Caesar’s Gallic Wars; how to appreciate the beauty of French civilization through its early poetry; how St. Thomas Aquinas equated truth and beauty. I fell in love with Debussy in music class when I heard for the first time his “Golliwogs Cakewalk.” I recall the terror of our piano recitals and musical productions. Would I remember the notes to play? Would I recall the words of the songs? My years at TMLA were also enriched by the presence
get a doctoral degree and pursue a career as a university teacher. However, at the same time, I had an enormous desire to see the world. My father took us as children to visit the United Nations, and when I was a young girl, many from the U.N. lived in our neighborhood. I saw people wearing the saris and turbans of India and Pakistan, and the gorgeous dress of the African and Asian and Latin American countries. A hundred languages were spoken in the streets of New
“GRADUATES OF THE MARY LOUIS ACADEMY HAVE HAD THE PRIVILEGE OF A SUPERB EDUCATION. THAT PRIVILEGE COMES WITH AN IMPORTANT RESPONSIBILITY. WE HAVE A RESPONSIBILITY TO DO GOOD IN THE WORLD” However, we must always think of the larger good we can do in the world by improving the lot of those less fortunate than we. There are a thousand ways to achieve this goal – in our generation, we went in the Peace Corps, or we worked in literacy programs for disadvantaged fellow Americans. We volunteered in hospitals or libraries or homes for the elderly. Today, many young college graduates opt for a program called “Teach for America,” offering to work for a year or two in schools in underprivileged neighborhoods. Young women often ask me about how I became a U.S. diplomat. The diplomatic service has been my way of “giving back” to my society, to my country. As a college student, I had planned to
York. I yearned to see these far flung places. When I was a senior in college, I read an article in The New York Times about how the Department of State had decided to recruit more women as Foreign Service Officers. Up until then, most women who joined had worked as secretaries for a few years before marrying one of their male colleagues. When I investigated however, I discovered that women were not permitted to remain in the service once they married. Since I was engaged, I decided to return to my initial plan and get my doctoral degree. When my husband Robert and I completed our graduate studies, he joined the diplomatic service and I thought I would pursue a career teaching at
65
oocTMLAtxt.indd 65
11/24/14 12:14 PM
universities around the world. Well, I quickly discovered that the wives of diplomats were supposed to host dinners and tea parties. Indeed in many countries, they were not permitted to work. That was the decisive factor for me. Since the rule had finally been changed, and married women were allowed to join the diplomatic service, I took the examination in 1979 and entered the service the following year. As it happened, our son was born only eight weeks before I was sworn in as a Foreign Service Officer. Robert and I were able to give our son Edward an extraordinary childhood living in Turkey and Pakistan and Germany before he went off to board at the Groton School in Massachusetts. I chose public diplomacy because it suited my abiding interest in the world of ideas and the arts. Our generation was very inspired by the words of President John F. Kennedy, “ask not what your country can do for you. Ask what you can do for your country.” During the thirty years that I served at our Embassies and Consulates abroad, I had two tours in Turkey, two tours in Pakistan, one tour in Israel, two tours in Germany and one tour in Austria. My friends who chose academic careers often ask me if I am sorry that I did not spend my life with writing and teaching. Of course, that is also a very marvelous life, but I have no regrets. I accomplished my goal of seeing the world. In Turkey, I traveled to universities around the country lecturing on American literature and history. I did that in Pakistan as well. In Israel, I worked on conflict resolution between the Israelis and the Palestinians. In Germany, I did a great deal with the minority Turkish community. In Austria, I supported the efforts of my colleagues at our Embassy in Sarajevo, Bosnia, after the signing of the Dayton Accords ended the horrible Balkan War of the 1990’s. Throughout my career, one of my main interests has indeed been conflict resolution. I organized conferences in Pakistan for Indians and Pakistanis. In Turkey, I worked on Turkish-Greek and
Turkish-Armenian reconciliation. In Israel, I oversaw a very large grant supporting cooperative efforts between Israelis and Palestinians. In affluent and influential countries like Germany and Austria, I made every effort to coordinate with those who sought to resolve these conflicts. This is all related to the idea of “giving back.” When I took the oral examination for the Foreign Service, they asked me why I, a woman, wanted to do this job. Such a question would not be posed today, but then it was meant sincerely. I responded by saying that we have an obligation to use our talents whatever they may be and that I believed that I could make a real contribution through diplomacy. All of us, men, women and children, have the obligation to make the world a better place. We must assess realistically how we can do that and then just go for it. The larger objective is world peace. Improving mutual understanding between the peoples of different nations is one way to accomplish that goal. Whether you decide to play on the local stage, the regional stage, or the world stage, you too can keep this in mind. One of the great leaders of the last century spoke of “peace at home and peace abroad.” Some of you will work to make our society better from within, and others of you may choose work that will lead to better relations amongst the peoples of the world.
I am now the VP of a non-profit organization called The American Council on Germany. It is dedicated to promoting transatlantic dialogue between the U.S. and Germany plus the rest of Europe. The issues we deal with in this dialogue however, are global. My little granddaughter, Nora, will be two years old on March 14th. I think a great deal about what kind of world my generation will leave for hers. We must be good stewards of the environment, warm and hospitable to the new arrivals in our country, innovative in science and technology and dedicated to the arts. My current work permits me to do all of these things. In addition, I am proud to say that I Chair the Board of the Battery Dance Company and that I am a member of the Committee Twenty of a foreign policy organization called Network 20/20. It is important to be active and engaged throughout our lives. I believe that my education at The Mary Louis Academy was one of the strongest incentives in my entire life to seek to make the world better for us all. (Dr. Helena Kane-Finn 63 has enjoyed a wonderful career in the U.S. Foreign Service that spanned over 30 years. Dr. Finn has served at diplomatic posts in Pakistan, Turkey, Greece, Cyprus, Austria, Israel and Germany, also serving as Director of Amerika Haus in Germany and Director of Turkish Studies at The Washington Institute for Near East Policy as well as Assistant U.S. Secretary of State for Educational and Cultural Affairs under President Clinton. Currently Dr. Finn resides in NYC with her husband, Ambassador Robert Finn, and serves as Vice-President and Director of Programs for the American Council on Germany.)
In 2010, I retired from the diplomatic service to return home to the great city of New York.

REMEMBERING SISTER EILEEN GILDEA CSJ It is with very heavy hearts that we mourn the passing of S. Eileen Gildea CSJ. S. Eileen served as Assistant Principal at TMLA from 1989-2010 overseeing programming and academic matters. Her devotion to outlining the best academic program for each student was appreciated by thousands of TMLA alumnae. Sister Eileen continually encouraged students to pursue the most interesting and challenging course of study during their four years at TMLA. She never tired of counseling students and welcomed them all into her office to share academic, personal and just plain fun exchanges. She was a strong presence to TMLA's faculty not only through teacher development but in friendship and personal support. Sister Eileen also directed the many International and Cultural Harmony Festivals that take place each year at TMLA and developed our course program in Leadership and Life Skills. S. Eileen celebrated 60 years of religious life in September 2014 and was laid to rest September 21 on what would have been her 79th birthday. She is tremendously missed.
You’ve come full circle. We recall your birth Was on the cusp of summer turning fall. That same day we’ll commit you to the earth. We pause a bit to try to capture all You were to us. Remembering your mirth, We gather this last day of daylight’s sprawl. We come together at this equinox In mourning. We remember how you planned The master schedule, the finals, and Our academic lives in little blocks Of minutes. And the stilling of your clocks Is jarring, and it’s hard to understand; But you rest now in the Timekeeper’s hand That gently, oh so gently, gently rocks.

FINDING MY VOICE AT THE MARY LOUIS ACADEMY We encouraged the school community to make conscientious decisions while shopping and considering purchasing products from fair-trade companies.
Mary Casey 14
Every Catholic school has a mission that distinguishes it from other schools. At The Mary Louis Academy the mission is more than just a saying; it becomes your way of life. The Congregation of St. Joseph’s (CSJ) mission of all inclusive love, unity and reconciliation enlivens and motivates the entire community. All of the activities that take place at TMLA are grounded in this philosophy with an additional emphasis on service. One of the unique service opportunities at TMLA is the Service Homeroom Program, of which I was fortunate to be a member. The program, led by Mrs. Allyson Gutierrez, is offered to sophomores, juniors and seniors. In this service program, over 150 students and six faculty members learn about social justice, health and environmental issues. Throughout the school year, we sponsor countless initiatives to raise awareness and take action as advocates for positive change. One of our most recent initiatives has been promoting Fair Trade. By definition, fair trade is a practice that ensures goods are produced in an ethical and safe environment, assisting small farmers and entrepreneurs who do not exploit men, women and children. To educate the TMLA community on this issue, the Service Homeroom Program sponsored a Fair Trade Christmas Bazaar and invited fair-trade vendors to sell their goods in our cafeteria.
Another initiative of the Service Homeroom Program is Delete Day. We have designed a series of events and activities to encourage ethical and responsible use of the Internet. We invite students to update emails, learn about privacy settings, delete unknown friends and followers, and clean up social media posts that are dangerous or disrespectful. On Delete Day, students go on their social networking accounts – Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, etc. – and remove statuses and pictures that are not representative of who they are as individuals. This initiative centers on Mahatma Gandhi’s words, “My life is my message,” and urges students to understand that their posts on social media reflect who they are. In 2013, members of the Service Homeroom Program expanded our efforts to educate local Catholic elementary students through a Delete Day training seminar. Many of the grammar schools have sponsored their own Delete Day events after attending this training seminar. The initiatives of the Service Homeroom Program include a wide range of activities. One highlight last year was when we participated as student delegates in the Commission on the Status of Women 57 at the U.N. The focus of that commission was an “end to violence in all forms against women and girls.” During the year, we also participated in weekly trips to a soup kitchen, park cleanups, various fundraising walks, a Veterans’ Day drive, Teens for Jeans Drive, Rockaway cleanup after Hurricane Sandy, EAK Beautiful Me, P.S. I Love You Day, screening of the documentary “Girl Rising” in solidarity with the girls kidnapped in Nigeria and an Earth Day H.O.P.E. concert.
Following our mission of helping others, service homerooms have influenced the school to adopt TOMS shoes as our uniform shoe; for each pair we purchase, one pair is given to a child in need. My experiences with the Service Homeroom Program have been rewarding and vital to my empowerment and maturity as a young woman of dignity. My participation has enabled me to develop leadership skills, work cohesively in group settings and address large audiences. I have been exposed to situations and people that I would not have otherwise known; for that I am grateful. I will carry with me for the rest of my life the knowledge I have attained and the values I have formed as a result of the program. In contemporary society, it is easy to lose one’s voice in the shuffle, especially as a young woman; however, the Service Homeroom Program and The Mary Louis Academy have taught me how powerful my voice is and that I can speak out against injustices and be heard. Choosing a high school offers elementary students opportunities to explore many options. Growing up, I attended St. Adalbert School in Elmhurst, and it was clear to me that I wanted to attend a Catholic high school because of the support and love I had enjoyed. I knew when selecting The Mary Louis Academy that I would receive an excellent education and feel at home in the school community, but I did not realize how valuable, beneficial and influential TMLA’s mission and Service Homeroom Program would be. (Mary Casey 14 is attending Vanderbilt University in the fall on a full four year scholarship as a Posse Scholar. The Posse Foundation identifies high school students with extraordinary academic and leadership potential to be named Posse Scholars. Posse partner colleges and universities award Posse Scholars four-year, full-tuition leadership scholarships. Mary is pursuing a degree in medicine, health & society. )
