OurSpeechandDebateTeam,ledbycoachMr.KieranLarkin,hashadanimpressive season.AttheStateRegionalQualifyingTournamentheldatArchbishopMolloyHigh School,severalteammembersearnedspotsattheNewYorkStateChampionships takingplacethismonth.
Followingthatsuccess,theteamcontinuedtoshineataGrandTournamenthostedby theMetropolitanExpeditionaryLearningSchool,wheremultiplemembersqualifiedfor theNationalCatholicForensicLeagueNationalChampionshipsinChicago.Their outstandingperformancesalsoearnedtheteama3rdPlacetrophyoverall. Basedontheirachievements,we’rethrilledtosharethatourteamwillbecompetingat NationalsoverMemorialDayweekend!

TMLA’sRoboticsTeam,theSteampunkPenguins,earnedtheSustainabilityAwardat thisyear’sFIRSTRoboticsCompetition—aninternationalprogramthatchallengeshigh schoolstudentstosolvereal-worldproblemsthroughinnovation,engineering,and teamwork.
Thisseason,theteamspotlightedaninspiringgroupofIndigenousShinnecockwomen knownastheShinnecockKelpFarmers—proud“waterprotectors”whoarerevitalizing theecosystemofShinnecockBaybyplantingkelptosupportmarinelife.
The2024competitiontheme,REEFSCAPE,focusedonenvironmentalconservation andwasaperfectmatchfortheteam’songoingpartnershipwiththeShinnecockKelp Farmers.Insupportofthiseffort,twoTMLAseniorsdesignedandbuiltaspecialized tooltostreamlinethekelpseedingprocess.Lookingahead,theteamiscommittedto continuingitscollaborationwithSKF,helpingtodevelopnewsolutionstosupporttheir sustainableaquaculturepractices.
TheSteampunkPenguinsaredeeplyhonoredtoberecognizedbyNewYorkCity FIRSTwiththeSustainabilityAward—ameaningfulacknowledgmentoftheirworkin environmentalinnovationandcommunitypartnership.
TheMaryLouisAcademyisproudtohostourannual5Kon Saturday,May3rd,inmemoryofJoeLewinger—abeloved memberoftheTMLAcommunitywhopassedawayin March2020.
JoeservedTMLAfornearlytwodecadesasaSocial Studiesteacher,AthleticDirector,andultimatelyas AssistantPrincipalofStudentLife.Hewasavibrant presenceoncampus,knownforhisenergy,dedication, anddeeploveforthestudentsandmissionofthe Academy.JoewasinstrumentalinbuildingTMLA’s AthleticsDepartmentintothelargestall-girlsprogramin NewYorkCity.
