FEAT: TPG (THE PERFECT GENT) DO’S HAIRCUT If you are looking for a new look, do not be so quick to go online and start shopping at your favorite store.

You would be quite surprise how much grooming could change your appearance. Up keeping your facial hair, hair style, and even better hair can give you a new and improved look, a great addition to your style that wardrobe just couldn’t do.

A hair cut can easily change you on a woman’s scale from a 5 to a 7, just with a haircut.

Gentlemen who like to keep their hair short, should get their hair cut 10-14 days. Gentlemen who prefer a longer hair style can go months without a cut should get a line up to make your long lasting hairstyle looks fresh.

God created man, but not all men were created equal. Our facial structure is constantly being judged and for men, facial hair can truly set you apart. Facial hair is not something you can grow overnight, Find a style that fits your personality and face, and adjust from there. (see: how to shave).

NAIL UPKEEP

Tips4Gents: Trim pubic hair, its more hygienic, plus, your partner will appreciate your decision.

Gentleman, it is ok to treat your nails. No women or even a future employer wants to look at dirty and uncut nails. Invest in a kit, where you no longer use your teeth to trim your nails. Also, treat yourself to a MANicure and even a pedicure (maybe you work on your feet all day). Every once in a while treat your mother or sister.

You can get a full haircut one week then a line up the next week and just alternate to save money.

Gents, there are two types of skin types: dry and oily, and in addition, your skin could be sensitive or non-sensitive. You want to wash at least twice daily, morning and night, to remove the debris from your day. Also, exfoliating can help as well, which shouldn’t be performed daily.

Do not forget, always moisturize especially with dry skin. It will keep your skin healthy & hydrated.

THE PERFECT SHAVE FEAT: TPG (THE PERFECT GENT) We have come a long way from sharpened rocks to electronic razors. Shaving is for EVERY MAN; however, different razors should be used depending on one’s skin & hair texture. Here are some tips to shaving and recommended products that I have had success using.

HAIR/SKIN TEXTURECURSE HAIR: Use a 3-5 blade razor.

Sensitive skin: use a 1-3 blade(s) Shave with the grain in short strokes of no more than an inch or two.

RECOMMENDED KITS: BEVEL AND THE ART OF SHAVING Tips4Gents: Not everyone facial hair grows in the same direction, so make sure you get a feel of which direction, by rubbing fingers across face before shaving it is better to shave during or after the shower, because your pores are open and you skin is soft.

PROCEDURE 1. Place a hot towel over face Apply shaving cream—look into a badger brush (it applies easier and it help exfoliate).

2. Shave, and NEVER shave over the same place more than once, you will irritate the skin causing bumps and itchiness.

3. Wash face off with cool water to close the pores and relax the skin.

4. Finally, apply after-shave balm to moisturize the skin.

Tips4Gents: Your razor should last about 8-12 shaves. NEVER DRY shave, unless it is electric shaving.

“Find what works for YOU and stick with it” Kenneth Kyrell McKoy said in describing his philosophy toward fashion.

Kenneth Kyrell McKoy along with Jovel Phillips, who are both 2012 graduates of Morehouse College, are currently on a path toward becoming two very influential figures in the fashion industry. While at Morehouse College, the two were heavily involved in the fashion scene in the AUC working in many AUC fashion shows, appearing on many fashion blogs, and even creating their own blog called “The No Names” in 2011. Presently, Jovel Phillips and Kenneth Kyrell McKoy both hold positions at Macy’s Corporate and still run The No Names together. I recently got the chance to catch up with the two Morehouse Men to find out what their doing and how they got there; here is what they had to say: The Maroon Tiger: Please describe what each of you currently do today in fashion. How did you get there?

Jovel Phillips: I’m the editorial writer for Macy’s Corporate.

I’m also the cofounder of [the no names], a fashion and lifestyle blog. I served as VP of the Marketing Association when I was in school and worked directly with the Macy’s recruiter at the time. I also served as the men’s fashion editor-at-large for Kontrol Magazine in Atlanta.

Kyrell McKoy: I am currently the Assistant Fashion Director for Men’s and Kids for Macys.com in NYC, and the CoFounder of TNN: The No Names. One of my most

current projects that will be released later this month is a web series that I am hosting entitled ‘First Semester’. I’ll be highlighting a variety of young influential and topics in the realm of Fashion, Music, Art and Entertainment through indepth conversations and “street talks”.

MT: Did attending Morehouse College help prepare you for working in fashion?

JP: I wouldn’t say it prepared me in a direct sense, but indirectly, absolutely. From modeling Freshman year and then eventually serving as one of the creative directors for our senior show to just getting dressed for class each day on such a fashion focused campus, my time at the House helped me develop my foundation in the industry.

KM: While at Morehouse College I knew the importance of networking within the city and getting involved in extracurricular activities that were fashion oriented such as writing for The Maroon Tiger and getting involved within the Fashion scene on campus. Freshman year I was the Director of the Freshman Fashion Show, Director of Merchandising and Styling for the Morehouse and Spelman College Homecoming Fashion Shows my Sophomore and Junior year. Senior Year, I was one of the Creative Directors over the show, which really helped me showcase my strengths and advance to the next level.

MT: Now that you are Morehouse Men, describe your views toward fashion now compared to when you where Men of Morehouse . JP: Back then, so many basic things impressed me and my understanding of the industry was rather shallow, even though I was actively doing what I could to learn more and more. Once you’re actually a part of the industry, and more so an influencer—be it a blogger or whatever—you see facets of this world that you’d never imagine.

When you work for a multi­billion-dollar retailer, sit front row at fashion week, serve as an editor for a publication, all of these experiences change you in amazing ways.

KM: My views toward Fashion now that I am a Morehouse Man compared to that of when I was a Man of Morehouse isn’t too different to be honest. Even before attending Morehouse College I viewed Fashion and more importantly “Style” as a type of social adhesive that brings many people with contrasting backgrounds together. Considering the Fashion Industry is my day to day routine now, I have grown to appreciate and understand it even more.

Its no secret that Morehouse College graduates exceptional men who go on to do great things in their respective career fields and areas. James Jeter, a 2013 graduate of Morehouse College from Washington D.C., has distinguished himself as one of these exceptional men. As a Man of Morehouse, Jeter was one of the many stylish gentlemen to walk up and down Brown St. and helped establish many of Morehouse’s current fashion trends. His eclectic yet refined style helped distinguish himself from his peers. Additionally, while at Morehouse, Jeter contributed to The Maroon Tiger as a staff writer and started one of MT’s first fashion & style columns. Now, Jeter is currently a Men’s Concept Designer at Ralph Lauren Headquarters in New York, NY. The Maroon Tiger (MT): As a Man of Morehouse, you were one of the most flee guys on campus. Presently, you are a Morehouse Man working as a designer at Ralph Lauren after graduating almost 2 years ago.

How did that happen?

James Jeter (JJ): I think timing had a lot to do with it, a little bit of luck, and the people at RL that I became friends with. I¹ve been preparing to be a designer for a while, so my ending up here has been in the works much longer than a year.

MT: How were you first introduced to Ralph Lauren?

JJ: I was introduced to the brand Ralph Lauren in the same was most were introduced—through the ubiquitous notion that the iconic polo was just a part of the American fabric (no pun), so in a sense I inherited a relationship with the brand.

I was first introduced to the man Ralph Lauren when I was an intern by Mary Randolph Carter, it was around the time he was deciding to close Rugby (Rugby Ralph Lauren), and Mr. Lauren wanted my opinion.

MT: Describe your current position and what it is like working at Ralph Lauren’s Corporate Office.

JJ: I’m currently a Concept Designer at Ralph Lauren, which is probably the most multifaceted position in the company. It all starts with my team, which consists of 4 people. We come up with the inspiration for every collection each season for Polo, Black Label, Purple Label and RLX. We present ideas to Ralph that serve to push the needle in areas that may need to become cooler. We travel the world to shop for vintage and contemporary clothes, as well as for inspiration in each product category. We style out showrooms, and concept rooms, and oversea high profile store openings. The list goes on. . .

JJ: I first realized the effects Morehouse had on me in a corporate environment back when I was an intern, it was just that then I couldn¹t quite put a finger on what exactly Morehouse instilled in me that allowed me to thrive in my position. Then I realized that what Morehouse prepares us all for is the grind, and the ability to finesse outcomes in our favor. I also think that knowing who you are is the first step in becoming who you want to be, and Morehouse introduces you to yourself in a major way.

MT: Recently, you had the opportunity to appear (model) on GQ.com for Ralph Lauren’s Spring/Summer 2015 Collection, How did that happen?

JJ: I was in a meeting with Ralph, and he kept commenting on the way I was dressed, there were some guys from advertising in that meeting…the rest is history.

MT: What sparked your interest in fashion?

JJ: I never really loved fashion; I just always saw an importance in personal style.

It¹s more about a lifestyle than it is about fashion.

MT: What are your long term career goals?

JJ: For a long time my dream job was to be a Concept Designer, but every time you achieve a goal you expand and want more.

As of now I just want to be an invaluable asset to the company, in whatever capacity.

How we present ourselves will always bring out biases from others rooted intheir unique experience. When I leave my room, my intention is to encouragesomeone to acknowledge my humanity before they acknowledge anything else. Weare all human beings who are constantly bombarded with society’s ills throughvarious forms of media daily. No. Ultimately we cannot control what others think ofus or what biases our presentation may incite in others. However, we can do ourbest to present our best self in how we dress. This does not mean you cannot bestylish while doing so either. For me specifically I strive for my dress to reflectpurity in some sense and to avoid being objectified in anyway.

Apart of this goesbeyond how you dress and also has to do with your character, your aura, and yourspirit. How you walk, how you talk, how you treat others, this is all apart of yourdress. I believe there is clothing that is unseen, beyond the physical that highlightsthe essence of every human being.

People can sense what energy you give off byhow you carry yourself. I say that the best dress anyone can have is good character.

3 INTERVIEW LOOKS THAT WILL GET YOU THE JOB “It seems simple to pick out a nice suit, shirt, pair it with your favorite tie, and a pair of dress shoes, but it’s not. The rules of dressing for an interview are harder than you think. Older companies have different requirements than startups.

The Conservative: Interested in working corporate with fortune 500 companies on Wall Street, downtown Chicago, and Atlanta, you better dress like you know what you are doing. What you need is a power suit.

You want to stay away from solid black on the interview and wear a dark navy & grey.

Make sure to wear a solid white or light blue shirts, stripes are ok with laid back companies, but you can never go wrong with solids & barrel cuffs. If you wear French cuffs don’t go overboard with the cuffs, they look at you like you do not need the job.

Navy, red, & gold are you power ties.

Red is bold. Gold is friendly, Navy is neutral.

For a conservative job it is best to wear black Oxford shoes, but you can wear brown shoes as well.

Socks should match your trousers and or shoes. Wearing the same colors of your trousers can add an illusion of you being an inch taller.If you wear a watch make sure it is not too flashy.

The Creative: When you start to deal with entertainment, media, & start ups companies you are not required to wear a suit, but if you do spice it up some. The creative jobs are more laid back and relax work environment and it is easier to get your creative juices flowing. Your weekend jeans might not work, but all jobs have a dress attire policy so do not worry. If you not quite sure what to wear, wear something similar to what the current employees wear to work.

In the photo I am wearing a Macy brown taupe suit. Navy Bengal stripe TM Lewin spread color shirt and a reversible hunter green white dokadot & striped The Tie Bar bow tie. Also do not be afraid to add some color, try complementing or bringing out a color from your tie or shirt.

The Casual: This attire takes place when you have to wear a certain uniform for, so you will buy clothes from the store or will be provided clothes (I.e. Clothing Retail.) It is also catered towards jobs where it is not corporate, but the employees still get business casual dressed up.

Above I am sport a navy Jos. A Bank Joseph Slim fit blazer. With a banana republic brown, navy, & white Gingam pattern button down with roasted khaki chinos, and a pair of brown wingtip shoes.

This article is just to encourage black males to love the women that are the foundation to their existence.

Malcom X once said, “The most disrespected person in America is the Black woman, the most unprotected person in America is the Black woman, the most neglected person in America is the Black woman.” This quote continues to provoke the idea that the Black woman is not appreciated for the greatness that she can bring to a family’s household.

While there is importance for the Black man, generally, the Black woman allows the home to prosper with strength, humility and grace.

What is your culture foundation? Many students in the Atlanta University Center (AUC) are of African American descent.

Yet, a new age of hip-hop has been born encouraging young black men to desert their black sisters in exchange for foreign women.

In 2015, we have entered a new period in Hip-Hop culture. The Black woman has been neglected. The 90s and early millennium was all about black love. It was cool to be black and hip hop was filled with lyrics like “ The darker the berry the sweeter the juice” ,” Big up all de girls dem wid dark complexion”, “Black woman I love you so, every day”, “Black love No end in sight” and “Brown skin, you know I love your brown skin”.

However, now there has been a paradigm shift to lyrics like “If it aint foreign its boring”, “She from another country, I brought her to the city with me”, “No, it’s never boring American you know I had to cop that foreign”, “With a hand full of girls and they all so foreign.” While it is nice to experience the greater things in life, what is wrong with loving a Black woman?

Let’s stop for a moment and ask ourselves what leaders like Malcom X would say. As Black people, we have allowed history to

repeat itself. We no longer have the Black love. We no longer have the Black power.

Instead, we have Black compliance. We have allowed the “dominating race” to tell us what is acceptable and what is not. We have decided to accept the phrase, “If it ain’t foreign its boring” to be a way of life.

The Black men need to stop sexualizing black women. Black men need to treat them like the great Queens that they are by putting them on a pedestal just as ancient history did with Black queens such as Amina, Candace, Makeda, Nefertiti, and Yaa Assantew. Take it back to the roots.

Every other race is trying to take parts of the Black woman to make their own, yet the Black man is demolishing her existence. In the same speech mentioned, Malcolm X went on to say, “We will kill you for our woman!

We believe that if the White man will do whatever is necessary to see that his woman gets respect and protection. Than you and I will never be re recognized as men and until we stand up like men and place that same penalty.”

Black men, it is time to step up and stand up for your Black women. Another shift needs to occur that involves adopting the same passion, enthusiasm, and gusto that Malcom X had for not only black women but for the Black culture. Once this shift occurs, there needs to be no change ever again. The only change that can be accepted is if it is to love the Black culture even more. This should be to build the culture back to its originating roots of royalty, intelligence and black excellence. I speak to you, Black man. I speak to you.
