Family fun in the city

There is so much for families to do in Southampton, whether you are looking for adventure, a fun day out, making some memories, or just something to pass a few hours.

Southampton is lucky to benefit from some great open spaces, which are perfect for some affordable family fun! Watch the boats go by and grab an ice cream down at Mayflower Park, or take a picnic to Southampton Common with it’s woodland, parkland, rough grassland, ponds, wetlands, nature trails, a paddling pool, a children’s play area, a model yachting pond, and a fishing lake!

At Southampton Common you’ll also find Hawthorns Urban Wildlife Centre, the perfect place to get in touch with nature and discover what wildlife can be found in the city.

If you’ve got some energy to burn when make sure you visit Southampton’s Oxygen Freejumping! This new trampolining venue, gives you over 25,000 square feet of air to explore. Flick, flack, flip (or trip!), up and down until your hearts content. Certainly a great way to tire the family out!

My mind is always on the go, so I get in East Street, and temporary giant

animal sculptures over the summer, there is so much to see and admire and I am privileged to be part of it.

What springs to mind when you think about Southampton?

History - the city is riddled with it!

I’ve always been interested in the back-stories of places and people and I really love that in Southampton, everywhere you go there are reminders of its rich history. From the Southampton Walls, to the many monuments dotted around the city, it really evokes the imagination and makes you want to discover the secrets that Southampton holds.

What are your top 5 favourite things to do when in Southampton?

Well if I had to just pick five I would say: 1. A pie and a pint or two at the Dancing Man Brewery.

2. Going to gigs at Southampton’s many live music venues.

3. Visiting the Southampton City Art Gallery.

4. Shopping for books and vinyl.

5. Chilling out on Southampton Common in the summer.

What are the must-sees and dos?

As of last year the Common People Festival is hopefully set to be a mustdo annual event. For a bit of history the Tudor House and Gardens, and Vaults Tour are perfect, you could even test your bravery with a Ghost tour at night! A nice aspect of Southampton is its location, making it easy to visit stunning places like the New Forest. Finally for those who love good food and a relaxing drink, Oxford Street is just the place to go.

Southampton’s must-visit attraction is SeaCity Museum, which tells the story of the people of the city through the ages, their fascinating lives and the area’s historic connection with the sea.

Titanic Story The most famous ship in the world, the RMS Titanic, pulled away from White Star Dock in Southampton at the start of her maiden voyage on 10 April, 1912.

In the early hours of 15 April she struck an iceberg and sank, causing great loss of life.

Nowhere was the tragedy of the Titanic disaster more felt than in Southampton, where more than 500 households lost a family member. Visitors to the museum will discover how many people worked on board and the huge variety of jobs the crew carried out. The centre-piece of this gallery features a 1:25 scale, interactive model of the Titanic.

Through powerful oral testimony from survivors, the Disaster Room describes the sequence of events from the time the ship struck the iceberg to its sinking, and the rescue of passengers by the Carpathia. Also, there is a fascinating audio visual show for visitors to find out about the British Inquiry, which was held in London soon after the disaster.

Gateway to the World Gateway to the World recounts the stories of people who have departed from or arrived in the port of Southampton over the last 200,000

years with themes of invaders and settlers, traders, exiles and soldiers.

This gallery introduces visitors to people who have passed through Southampton: from Roman traders bringing new merchandise, Saxon settlers setting up homes bringing in new trades and skills to Hamwic, or Huguenot Protestants seeking refuge and Victorian industrialists with links across the British Empire. Digital touchscreens and hands-on activities invite visitors to interact and engage in exhibits and share their Southampton stories.

To help put the city into context, a large interactive map reveals the development of Southampton from small Stone Age settlements into the walled medieval town and through the ages to its present size.

Special Exhibition Area The Pavilion, the iconic building attached to SeaCity Museum, houses our special exhibitions. This year, the exhibition Port Out, Southampton Home, celebrates the golden age of the ocean liner. These ships were the lifeblood of Southampton, bringing employment, industry and glamour to the city.

From the early days in the 1890s to modern day cruise liners, this major

exhibition tells the story of these great ships and evokes the romance of sea travel and life on board. It includes a wide range of rarely seen items from the city’s maritime collection, including ship models, posters, photographs and ephemera from liners such as menu cards and souvenirs. Visitors of all ages can have a go at activities such as deck quoits, try on uniforms, or find out what was served for a meal in First Class on the Queen Mary.

Don’t miss the chance to cruise on Southampton’s ‘hidden gem’!

A heritage, cargo-passenger ship included in the National Historic Fleet, SS Shieldhall was launched on the Clyde in 1955, and later owned

by Southern Water until her purchase for £20,000 in 1988 by the charity that still operates her. Today the Shieldhall is a unique seagoing ‘time capsule’. She provides a working example of steamship machinery both above and below deck, typical of the cargo and passenger ships that plied the oceans of the world

between the 1870s and 1960s, after which they became all but extinct. Whilst other heritage ships are held permanently in dry dock, the Shieldhall is very active, with a programme that allows passengers to access the impressive steam engines at work in the engine room itself, and the bridge, complete with traditional instruments and gleaming brasswork.

Passengers are encouraged to see how the ship operates, and meet the Captain and volunteer crew.

Relax on board and listen to the

commentary of the sites and sounds of Southampton Water, as Shieldhall passes the outgoing cruise ships.

Shieldhall is considered a very stable vessel, providing an excellent viewing platform. There is plenty of covered seating on board, a Children’s Passport to follow, and a fully licensed bar and saloon serving hot snacks and refreshments.

The 2016 cruising programme runs from June – September, with a variety of trips from 2hr to all-day cruises. Look out too for ‘alongside events’ taking place in dock.

Tudor House Discover Southampton’s most important historic building, encompassing over 800 years of history on one site. Tudor House, with its beautifully recreated Tudor knot garden, is just a few minutes walk from the city centre. The timber-framed building facing St Michael’s Square was built in the late 15th Century, with King John’s Palace, an adjacent Norman house accessible from the garden, dating back a further 300 years. Tudor House gives a unique and atmospheric insight into the lives and times of both its residents through the years, and of Southampton itself.

Enjoy a vivid and exciting audio-visual show which explains the history of the house, alongside interactive screens that rotate to show how the rooms would have looked during different historic periods, in particular the Tudor, Georgian and Victorian eras. A selection of restored artefacts are on display in the museum, including archaeological finds dating back to the medieval and Tudor periods. Special events are held throughout the year, including hugely popular Halloween & Christmas activities.

Tudor House & nearby Westgate Hall are also available for weddings and corporate hire. Within this historic complex, we offer a wide range of rooms which can be laid out in different styles to suit your event – be it a meeting, conference, product launch, team building day or corporate hospitality with a difference. They may be used by themselves or in combination to enable, for example, breakout sessions and the ability to provide catering and refreshments separately from the main venue.

Alternatively, it is possible to hire the entire venue for exclusive use.

he art gallery attracts artlovers, curious amateurs as well as those who simply enjoy the atmosphere of a gallery.

Southampton City Art Gallery offers the opportunity to enjoy high quality exhibitions ranging from painting, sculpture and drawing, to photography and film, as well as permanent collection and displays that change regularly to ensure new experiences with each visit.

Southampton City Art Gallery is internationally renowned for its permanent collection which features around 5,000 works. These span eight centuries and tell the story of western art from the Renaissance to the present day. The core of the collection is twentieth century and contemporary British art.

Strong clusters within this include Post-Impressionism (notably the Camden Town Group), Surrealism, St Ives and progressive contemporary art from the mid-1970s.

Free to enter and conveniently located right next to SeaCity Museum, the venue caters for families. You can enjoy gallery trails through the exhibitions, monthly art clubs and a fantastic range of activities for all ages.

The gallery can be hired for weddings, civil ceremonies, drinks receptions and even more. If you like to get your hands “dirty” then the Red Hot Press Printmaking Workshop is a great place to practice the art of printmaking, with courses available for all levels of skill.

In Southampton’s newly developing Cultural Quarter you’ll find the Solent Showcase which features contemporary visual art that encourages engagement, discussion and participation.

The Cultural Quarter will also soon be home to the John Hansard Gallery. This contemporary visual art gallery can currently be found at the University of Southampton.

With a thriving and growing art scene Southampton is the perfect place for creative minds.

K6 GALLERY K6 Gallery is the region’s newest and smallest art gallery.

The contemporary gallery has an on-going programme of exhibitions and events throughout the year.

Located in a pair of grade II listed phone boxes in the heart of Southampton, and within the city’s medieval town walls.

The gallery is open year round, every day of the week, 24 hours a day and is free to enter.

‘Brutalust’

April to July sees it host Roam an arts trail comprising of artworks by both local and international artists in a variety of unusual spaces starting at the phone boxes. At just over 2 miles long it makes the perfect way to fill an afternoon.

From July to October the phone boxes will each host an installation by Isle of Wight based artists Joanne HummelNewell and Laura Hathaway. From October until the New Year the gallery will be part of the British Art Show Fringe, making up one of many events around the city to celebrate local artistic talent to coincide with arrival of the British Art Show in the city.

Neil and Laura Moodley started Enoteca in January of 2016, based on a loose interpretation of the Italian Enoteca establishment. These small, usually informal restaurants dotted around Italy, tend to focus on good quality but inexpensive wines as well as good, local, simple food. Very often, they encourage diners towards the idea that people love being able to order many dishes from a menu and share those dishes with their dining companions.

The menu was designed by Neil and tested extensively on his very willing wife and children, using both Italian inspiration as well as the classical techniques learnt at Gordon Ramsay’s Tante Marie Culinary Academy where he achieved his Cordon Bleu Diploma.

Mango Thai Tapas Since opening in 2007, the original Mango Thai in Portswood’s boho student area has become renowned on the South Coast for its intimate charm and vibrant atmosphere. You will be pleasantly surprised when it’s not a bowl of stodgy rice pudding that lands in front of you, but a deconstructed masterpiece of smooth rice pudding, silky jam and a passion fruit ice parfait that cleanses the pallet.

If it’s a showstopper you’re after, “Chocolate Death” is nothing short of theatre on a plate! Don’t be scared by this coffin shaped dessert, with it’s warm brownie centre surrounded by a chocolate crumb soil, blood splattered raspberry coulis and a skull shaped burnt white chocolate and vanilla parfait that finishes it off perfectly. This dessert is unexpectedly lighter than you’d expect and with flavours that will make putting the spoon down before you finish, near impossible.

The Dancing Man Located in the only surviving freestanding medieval warehouse in Southampton, The Dancing Man Brewery is an award-winning microbrewery offering great beer, mouth-watering food and outstanding service.

Built in 1338, The Wool House was used as storehouse for wool exports to Europe, during Southampton’s time as a leading wool port it is one of several wool houses. It was later used as an prison during the Napoleonic war an then the Maritime Museum which closed following the opening of the new SeaCity Museum.

The Grade I listed building, has been brought to life by the owners of nearby pub, Platform Tavern, who have successfully restored an empty heritage building into a city brew house.

Renovated beautifully to compliment the building’s character, the Dancing Man Brewery’s minimalistic design mixes the old with the new. Look out for the graffiti on the walls, which remain from when it once held French prisoners from the Peninsular War. You can’t escape the smell of hops brewing the selection of beers. pened in February 2016, Steak of the Art redefined what eating out means in Southampton.

Perfect for those looking for pure foodie pleasure, the restaurant, which is located at Admirals Quay, Ocean Village, combines an electric artistic atmosphere with some of the best steaks served anywhere across the south coast.

From the moment you step inside customers are rewarded with a real wow factor. Split over two floors, 130 covers are indoors while the remaining 40 are outside providing a vista unlike anything else in the city and the ideal spot to soak up the summer sun while enjoying a refreshing drink and bite to eat.

The restaurant itself is a living gallery with pictures and paintings on display (and for sale) from local artists including work from the Southampton Art Society. The venue also includes a quirky crow’s nest where up to six customers can sit and enjoy their meal while overlooking the rest of the venue.

A Titanic themed mural adorns one entire wall. Made up of over 40 aluminium panels it links Southampton’s historical past with the famous ship. There are also a number of

booths which offer a more private dining experience for up to six people. The nautical theme continues throughout the whole restaurant with the floor incorporating numerous nautical flags while the private dining area, which is great for meetings, private events or family gatherings is decked out with a series of ropes.

The importance of sourcing the very best ingredients is a real labour of love for the team and is reflected in the quality of the meat and fish.

The team insists that all the main ingredients have good provenance with amazing quality, and the Southampton restaurant benefits from getting its meat and fish from some amazing suppliers which includes Cornwall-based Philip Warren butchers and Fish for Thought.

Steak of the Art is a totally new concept and one that has captured the imagination of the people of Southampton and is a great place to go for visitors to the city.

There are two tour guiding associations operating in the city providing flexibility and covering a wide variety of interests.

here are over 100 hands-on exhibits each one on a different aspect of science.

So you can, for example, operate cranes, compose electronic music, build electrical circuits and see your body’s hot spots with a thermo-imaging camera. The new sport activity zone is full of unusual interactive exhibits, like moving a ball with just your brain waves, wheelchair basketball and a short race track with a photo of your start.

The Science Centre makes exhibits on-site and works with University partners to develop new content each year.

The Science Centre also has the UK’s largest stand-alone Planetarium. This is a cinema with a vast dome screen. The image is all around you so that the effect can be like floating in space. The planetarium uses state of the art digital images and a cinema standard sound system. It is a unique experience. See website for the range of shows and offer and the daily schedule.

There are new films recently added to the planetarium schedule: We Are Stars which

offers a journey through time and space to discover where we came from, on a story that spans the billions of years between the Big Bang and modern day. In school holidays live-presenter shows are offered.

Simply Stars shows a starry sky and learn to recognise constellations, groups of stars and other objects that can be seen at this time of year. Watch out also for the seasonal live planetarium show “Space Mission for Santa” and for additional live planetarium shows in the schedules.

There is also a full event schedule for families or adults-only, including Saturday Night Live at the Planetarium, Single’s Nights and After Dark.

The golden age...

Make sure you take a selfie on the King’s Cross Footbridge, recently relocated from London and famous for its appearances in The 39 Steps, Elizabethan Express and the Harry Potter films.

Step back into the golden age of steam and discover the delights of a day out on the famous Watercress Line!

Running along the border of the South Downs National Park, the heritage steam railway starts in New Alresford – just 7 miles from Winchester on the A31. The attractive Victorian station has easy parking and steam trains running from 11am throughout the day. Famous for its watercress farms, Alresford is a picturesque town to explore with its boutique shops and café culture, or take a delightful stroll along the River Arle to the medieval Fulling Mill.

Once on board let the train take the strain as you sit back, relax and travel through the heart of the Hampshire countryside. All day fares allow you to get off and explore each of the period stations along the ten mile route to Alton, ride the trains as much as you wish and visit the towns at either end.

The heritage carriages are perfect for picnicking; pick up a lunch or cream tea from the station buffet or bring your own to enjoy along the way.

At the next station of Ropley you can see behind the scenes from the viewing galleries in the impressive engineering sheds where all of the

restoration is carried out, through to the loco yard itself where you can get right up close to these sleeping giants. There’s a large picnic area and a short walk to the railway’s own meadow and, on weekends, the miniature railway is also running for added fun. Make sure you take a selfie on the King’s Cross Footbridge, recently relocated from London and famous for its appearances in The 39 Steps, Elizabethan Express and the Harry Potter films.

Jump back on board the next train and listen out for the engines working hard up and over the steep climb of ‘the Alps’ to the quiet country station at Medstead & Four Marks. There’s an amazing amount of local wildlife to look out for along the way to the final station at Alton. Here you can watch the volunteers get the engine ready to haul the train back to Alresford.

You can also take a short walk in to the bustling market town which has a delightful mix of historic buildings and modern shops, with its own Curtis Museum and Allen Gallery and links to Jane Austen’s House Museum in nearby Chawton.

The railway is open weekends from mid February – October, with additional midweek running May – September and open every day in August. Throughout the year it holds annual events for visitors of all ages to enjoy, including Steam Gala’s, Days Out With Thomas and WWII reenactment weekends.

Whether you are taking a trip down memory lane or creating new ones, a trip on the Watercress Line is perfect way to unwind and experience the nostalgic sights, sounds and smells of steam travel from a bygone age.

Marwell Zoo Visit Marwell Zoo, near Winchester and discover the wonders of the natural world.

A host of exciting special events and fun packed activities will be taking place throughout the year at Marwell during school holidays, promising to occupy the most curious of little monkeys.

Marwell’s Zany Zebras will gallop through Southampton and Marwell Zoo for 10 weeks from 16 July creating two fun, family friendly trails for all to enjoy. Over 140 brightly coloured sculptures will adorn the city streets and a miniature replica trail will be hosted at the zoo. Find out fun facts about the Grevy’s zebra, and finally figure out if they are white with black stripes or black with white stripes! Winchester Cathedral

ifteen centuries of English history lie behind the magnificent Cathedral you see today. It stands at the heart of historic Winchester, once the seat of Anglo-Saxon and Norman royal power, on the site of an early Christian church.

Begun in 1079, the Cathedral has been a place of worship ever since.

Today the Cathedral welcomes hundreds of thousands of visitors each year and in recent years has become well known for its annual Christmas Market and open-air ice rink, which alone attract over 350,000 visitors.

A walk round the Cathedral takes you through centuries of English architecture. Particularly striking is the vast gothic nave, the longest medieval nave in Europe. Great works of art, including paintings, sculptures and carvings can be found throughout the building. Don’t miss the Crypt, this atmospheric part of the Cathedral is home to Antony Gormley’s contemplative statue ‘Sound II’ which, after prolonged periods of rainfall can be seen standing in water.

The Winchester Bible, the largest and finest of all surviving 12th-century English bibles, is one of the Cathedral’s greatest treasures. Its exquisitely illuminated capital letters, coloured with gold and lapis lazuli, are as intense today as they would have been 800 years ago.

The Cathedral is the resting place of many influential and famous people including Saxon kings, bishops and the much-loved English novelist Jane Austen, who was buried in the Cathedral in 1817. An exhibition telling of Jane’s life in Hampshire can be found beside her grave and a memorial plaque funded by her nephew is on the wall adjacent.

Visiting the Cathedral A guided tour provided by the Cathedral’s own volunteer guides is by far the best way to explore the building. Available on the hour from 10am – 3pm Monday to Saturday, these hour-long tours really do bring the Cathedral, its characters and history to life.

It’s worth taking the time to walk through the Cathedral’s historic Inner Close where you will find beautiful buildings and hidden gardens and a gateway to a pretty area of the City known as Kingsgate Village.

A perfect way to round-off your trip is a visit to The Refectory, serving homemade cakes, a seasonal lunch menu and a good range of drinks. The pretty terrace and orchard with outdoor seating enjoy good views of the Cathedral.

Follow in the Footsteps of

Literary lovers can learn more about one of the world’s best known authors during their stay in Hampshire.

Jane Austen, who lived from 1775 to 1817, was born in Hampshire as one of eight children. She began to write as a teenager and her first novel Sense and Sensibility has captivated generations across the globe.

The famous writer hit the headlines recently when there was a media furore over the Bank of England’s announcement that our currency would not feature a woman for several years. Elizabeth Fry was being replaced on our five pound notes by Sir Winston Churchill and after an online petition gathered 35,000 signatures, there was universal joy when it was

revealed Jane Austen would feature on Ј10 notes from 2017.

It was in Hampshire that Jane Austen found inspiration to write such classics as Pride and Prejudice, Emma, Mansfield Park and Sense and Sensibility.

Jane’s family moved to the village of Chawton near Alton, in 1809. The family home now houses the popular Jane Austen House Museum where visitors can see some of her personal memorabilia and artefacts including the writing table where she revised some of her most famous novels.

The Museum tells the story of Jane and her family and has on display portraits and memorabilia, original manuscripts and first editions of

her novels. The recreated historical kitchen and bakehouse are also open to visitors.

2017 will be the 200th anniversary of her death and Hampshire will be celebrating her life and work through a number of exhibitions and events.

Austen died in Winchester on 18 July 1817, at the age of 41. She was buried in the north aisle of the nave of Winchester Cathedral. The epitaph praises Austen’s personal qualities, draws attention to the “extraordinary endowments of her mind” but does not mention her achievements as a writer.

The restaurant is a welcome break off the busy High Street and the perfect place for a spot of lunch. Famous for his fish and shellfish dishes, you can’t but feel in-touch with the big blue from the moment you step in the door.

The décor in the restaurant is clean and fresh, and clever little touches give an authentic feeling of being by the sea. From the deep blue water glasses and napkins, to the coastal artwork hung on the walls. Even the background music plays its part in transporting you to the ocean.

The attentive staff will make you feel welcome, whilst the open kitchen adds a touch of flair to the atmosphere as you watch the chefs hard at work and hear the sizzle of fresh fish on the grill.

The restaurant offers both an a la carte and set lunch menu option, which include a good selection of non-fish based delights, a vegetarian menu and gluten free options.

Rick Stein has always emphasised that fish needs to be cooked simply, the quality of the produce is the hero of the dish and this is emphasised by its presentation. Each course is simply cooked to perfection, with a nod to its coastal heritage.

The Old Vine Ensuring local produce is at the heart of their food offering has played an important part in the success of The Old Vine.

Nestled close to Winchester Cathedral, the Grade II listed 18th century inn is a perfect spot to stop for lunch or dinner and sample the best of what local suppliers have to offer.

Ashton Gray, co-owner of The Old Vine, explained how around 50 per cent of the ingredients for the menu is produced locally in the summer.

“We look for local producers who can supply us with new ingredients. Currently on our menu we have some cracking pulled pork sausage rolls from Uptons of Bassett (voted Best Butcher at the Hampshire Life Food and Drink Awards) and we’ve teamed them with real ale chutney from the Hampshire Chutney Company – it’s not fancy food but it’s good, honest food you can really enjoy,” he said.

An added benefit to buying from individual producers with a real passion for food has been the chance to meet some really great people.

“I get to speak to people who really care about the food they are producing so

it makes it a real pleasure doing business with them.

But its not all plain-sailing as Ashton needs to know the artisanal makers can cope with the demands of a busy restaurant. “But I would far rather support a local business than some corporate monolith,” he said.

The Old Vine was Highly Commended in the Beautiful South Awards 2014-2015, which celebrate the best in hospitality and tourism across the region and it is an ideal place for visitors to soak up some of the atmosphere of the city.

The menu offers everything from hearty sandwiches, snacks, soups, salads, pub classics at lunch time to more elaborate dishes in the evening, such as Scottish salmon fillet with Hampshire watercress sauce, or English leg of lamb steak marinated in olive oil, garlic and herbs.

Real ale buffs might like to know that The Old Vine is passionate about its beer too, the quality is guaranteed by Cask Marque and they are also members of CAMRA’s LocAle scheme, which recognises their support of local brewers.

All their meat comes from local farms that produce free range or organic meat to the highest welfare standards.

Fish and shellfish come from West Country day boats and other sustainable sources in the South West. If fish choices are sometimes limited it is because the Chefs are rigorous in only choosing what they believe to be sustainable. Most vegetables and fruit used are grown within 50 miles of Winchester.

The Canteen supports Hugh’s War on Waste, and are reducing their waste and wider environmental impact.

From the outset of River Cottage, the intention was to create sites that are low carbon, low energy and consider carefully the various issues of sustainability and are pleased to say that they

How one man’s dream has become a Winchester sensation!

In 2014 Paul Bowler’s career took a turn in a new direction after he left his longterm role as a software developer and established the Winchester Distillery.

Two years on, the distillery produces some of the finest spirits to ever come out of Hampshire.

By distilling in small batches the Winchester Distillery creates intense, fragrant and refreshing flavours that can be found in every bottle of its Twisted Nose brand produced at the distillery.

Winchester Guest Magazine talk to entrepreneur, founder and distiller; Paul Bowler, to find out just where his dream started and where it’s going next...

What led you to open your own distillery?

I spent over 20 years working in software development and felt the need for a new challenge and a change of direction away from large corporations and beyond my safety zone of information technology. As an avid gin fan I had been following the new gin renaissance with great interest and the idea of creating a craft distillery for producing Hampshire spirits started to take shape in my mind. At the start of 2014 I made the difficult decision to leave the corporate world and take 6 months off to launch my first product, Twisted Nose Gin. This was nearly two years ago and I haven't looked back.

Do you run tours, tastings or events at the distillery?

The distillery has just expanded into new premises a few miles outside of the city and I'm currently developing part of the building into a comfortable tasting room where I will be able to entertain visitors, run tastings, educational events and tours. This should be ready to welcome the first visitors in early summer.

What's the most popular tipple at the distillery?

Our Twisted Nose Gin is by far the biggest seller in our growing range of spirits. This was our first product and is a modern take on a London Dry Gin using ten botanicals including Winchester's most famous export - watercress. As a matter of interest, our new distillery is actually situated within an old watercress factory and is surrounded by gravel beds where this amazing herb thrives. I only have to walk a few meters from the distillery to the beds to collect the watercress for my gin - it doesn't get much fresher than that!

What does the future hold for the distillery?

We have many new products in development including a new range of seasonal gins using botanicals gathered from around Hampshire. We also have a new classic dry gin and a Navy strength 'Gunpowder' gin, which includes some very interesting local ingredients.

With our reputation for quality and innovation we are also getting increasing numbers of commissions to create spirits for other businesses including bars, hotels and restaurants. For example, we recently worked closely with the Gilbert White Museum in Selbourne to use the fruits and herbs from their own botanical garden to create a unique gin for their shop.

This was a wonderful challenge and the resulting product is one of which I am very proud.

Beyond gin we are also making high quality flavoured vodkas and liqueurs using only real natural ingredients (no ‘nastys ‘that you'll find in popular brands) and, in collaboration with local vineyards, breweries and fruit growers, will shortly be exploring the idea of making whisky and fruit brandies. This next year is going to be very exciting indeed.

On a personal note, what is your favourite thing about Winchester?

Winchester is fast becoming known as a top food destination in its own right. The city has a wonderful selection of independent restaurants and bars, which are really supportive of fledging producers such as the Winchester Distillery. The number of cultural events is also growing, including the wine fair, fashion week, and (most exciting for me) Cocktail Week of which the distillery is a major sponsor. Being a fan of quality food and drink I can't think of anywhere else I'd rather be.

When choosing your main the menu offers a selection of accompaniments, allowing you to tailor your meal perfectly to your taste.

The ‘while you wait’ section of the menu temps you with the perfect introduction to your meal, from large juicy olives to artisan breads, complete with a delicious dukkah spice that compliments the rapeseed oil and apple balsamic perfectly.

Now you’ve awoken those taste buds it’s time to welcome the starters.

Tender scallops that melt in your mouth, placed on a silky smooth cauliflower puree, all tied together with a preserved lemon dressing and smoked bacon for that bit of crunch. Perfectly battered salt and pepper squid that crunches upon first bite, then transforms into a soft centre with a punchy sweet chilli jam to accompany it.

Whatever you choose for your mains you are in for a treat; with lamb that falls off the bone and rump steak that slices like butter. Every dish is perfectly paired with a selection of sides, from delicious greens that add a splash of colour to chunky chips with a golden exterior and fluffy inside.

Despite your belly telling you you’re done, you’ll have to try a dessert. A treacle

tart that is surprisingly light made extra special by the cinnamon ice cream and treacle crumb that accompanies it. A raspberry glazed double chocolate dessert with a soft chocolate sponge that sits on a river of white chocolate that is so moreish you’ll have cleaned your plate before you’ve even realised you’re full.

Stardust Years Vintage Fashion In Stardust Years the stock is lovingly displayed according to decade and Karen researches each label or company, including this in her, detailed, and often witty, labels. “I used to apologise for the “essay” that seems to accompany the frocks but so many customers said they love reading the labels so I haven’t reined myself in!”

Through her research, Karen has been lucky enough to make contact with the later generations of some of the designers and manufacturers of the past.

One such example is the Rayne family.

“In the late 1940s, young Edward Rayne joined the family firm (founded in 1885) and soon “society ladies” were drawn to Rayne Shoes as they became renowned for their style, beauty and craftsmanship. So, it was only natural that Buckingham Palace chose Rayne to design and supply the wedding shoes for Queen Elizabeth II. Today, the Rayne family have created a Rayne Shoe Archive and Stardust Years is proud to have donated a pair to this special collection.”

So, is it the quality of the clothing, the comfortable dressing room (with its chair from the QEII cruise ship), or the lovely vintage music in the background that makes this a Winchester ‘mustvisit’ shopping destination?

“I hope we provide a friendly, relaxed shopping experience where you can browse quietly, research our fashion books or share the memories stirred by our vintage treasures,” says Karen.

Opened in July 2013 by Karen Fitzsimmons and her husband Gary Nicholson, Stardust Years brings to Winchester the glamour and style of past times – from the Victorian era through to the 2000s. Karen comments, “Fans of Downton Abbey can find an original 1920s beaded dress or purse, alongside more recent pieces such as an evening gown designed by Thomas Starzewski, who designed for one of our most famous fashion icons, Diana, Princess of Wales.”

It’s clear that Karen has a passion for her stock.

“I grew up watching the films of the 1930s, 40s and 50s.

Whether it was Bette Davis striding across a room in a finely-tailored 1940s suit, or Grace Kelly, in a 50s’ cocktail dress, pouring champagne for James Stewart in “Rear Window”, I loved it all. In the shop, we even have an Oscarnominated costume worn by Glenda Jackson and a fur stole believed to have been worn

by Vivien Leigh.

he first thing I do when I wake up in the morning is to reach for my mobile and review the day ahead. My role is incredibly varied and includes an element of travel so once the week starts it’s a fairly packed schedule with back-to-back meetings and lunches on the go. I can be in Southampton one morning and up in Basingstoke for the afternoon and then back in Winchester for the last meeting of the day.

It’s not just about the 23 venues that we look after, it’s also about developing important strategic partnerships such as working with independently run museums like Jane Austen’s House in Chawton and other attractions in the county like Winchester Cathedral and The Great Hall, all an essential part of the role.

The Trust is a relatively new organisation but the many team members have worked together in individual Museums and Gallery teams over a number of years.

The creation of the Trust brought us all together, harnessing our creative energy to bring some world-class show-stoppers to the area. It’s a privilege to be at the helm as we look to raise the profile of the cultural backdrop of the county and we benefit from a highly qualified team of professional historians, museum and gallery curators, archaeologists, business professionals and 400 volunteers – local people who are so passionate about the history and culture of their local areas.

shops. Winchester’s Tudor and Stuart era is revealed at Westgate Museum, a beautifully refurbished listed monument and the last of the main Medieval gates into the city where interactive activities include being able to try on a suit of armour, as well as making an authentic brass rubbing.

The City Space at Winchester Discovery Centre will have some exciting exhibitions in 2016. Noted for their surreal and provocative textiles and wallpapers, Timorous Beasties, the multi-awardwinning, internationally acclaimed company are at the forefront of British design, working with clients such as Fortnum & Mason, Famous Grouse, the V&A and Nike.

The last few years have been about embracing change whilst working towards a vision that defines local culture as connected, engaging and accessible.

From the 2014 exhibitions marking the centenary of the outbreak of WW1, to the Natural History Museum’s animatronic dinosaurs that took over Milestone’s museum in Basingstoke, there is always something surprising in store from the Trust. The sense of endless possibility is incredibly motivating and means the future looks very bright indeed.

Outside of my ‘day job’ I am writing a paper about Alfred Russel Wallace, Charles Darwin’s co-author on evolution so more likely than not the last thoughts to go through my mind as my head touches the pillow are about natural selection – but I am as likely to dream about dinosaurs or Jane Austen as I am The Origin of the Species!

Seaside fun for all the family The UK’s only island city boasts a magnificent promenade running from Eastney to Old Portsmouth. Along the length of the beach are a plethora of attractions for all ages – many evoke memories of traditional seaside holidays of the past with swan-shaped pedalos on Canoe Lake and the nearby pitch and putt. The Tenth Hole, a popular café, sitting alongside the course, is well known for its eye-poppingly large cakes and is a great place for breakfast too.

Southsea Castle is the place where Henry VIII watched the Mary Rose sink. Now it’s a great place to visit and the kids will have hours of fun exploring the passages below ground. Every weekend throughout the summer there is live music from an assortment of musicians at the Band Stand. Pack a picnic and prepare to enjoy great music, a party atmosphere and one of the best backdrops in the world. (You will see everything from warships to sailing ships, hovercrafts, ferries and pleasure boats traversing the Solent).

There is a fascinating walk from Clarence Pier to Old Portsmouth. You can follow the route along the raised section with the harbour to one side and the old town to the other and see such landmarks as Portsmouth Cathedral, the Square Tower (often open for arts and crafts/ vintage events) and the Round Tower where generations have welcomed home their sailor sweethearts, waving as the navy ships pass close-by.

ItineraryTHREE Creative Portsmouth With its long association with great authors Portsmouth’s literary heritage is well known and you will find blue and brown plaques around the city. Charles Dickens was born in the city in 1812 and his birthplace, a small house on Old Commercial Road, is now a museum, which celebrates the author’s life and his many novels.

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle worked in Portsmouth as a doctor and it was at No. 1 Bush Villas on Elm Grove that he wrote the first two Sherlock Holmes novels.

Rudyard Kipling also lived for a time in the city and you will find his house in Campbell Road which bears a blue plaque to mark his time in the city from 1871-77.

Portsmouth is still a creative city, with a thriving contemporary art scene. Turner Prize winning artist Grayson Perry studied for a BA in fine art at Portsmouth Polytechnic and it is home now to a thriving creative scene.

There are always exhibitions of fine and decorative art at the free Portsmouth Museum, with a collection spanning 500 years of art, sculpture, photography, print, glass and ceramics.

There is an exhibition programme, which changes every few months and other creative events and activities, along with a lovely café and open garden area for the warmer months For contemporary art and upcoming artists, Aspex Gallery in Gunwharf Quays hosts artists from around the world with a first-class programme of exhibitions. There are also smaller galleries that hold regular exhibitions such as Art Space’s Gasp Gallery. Art Space also hold ‘open studio’ events several times a year.

There are new galleries opening all the time in the city such as the Coastguard Studios, Portsmouth Guildhall’s new space - Zodiac Art Gallery and the University’s new Space Gallery.

There are also regular exhibitions in alternative spaces such as hairdressers and orthodontists, garages and pubs. All along the seafront in the warmer months there are creative events from art fairs at the Square Tower to craft workshops at Southsea Greenhouse

Keep your eyes peeled on a Friday for pieces of artwork left dotted about the city for an appreciative audience to take home. My Dog Sighs (featured on BBC2’s The Culture Show) is a great proponent of the free art scheme and you can see more of his work by visiting www.mydogsighs.co.uk. To see some of his spectacular wall art in the flesh, walk down Exmouth Road from Albert Road, past the colourful terraced houses towards Marmion Road and just before the junction, there is a garage on the right hand side with a spectacular piece of his work. (Take the time to watch My Dog Sighs - A Can is Born on Vimeo).

My Dog Sighs has recently collaborated with five other artists on painting the walls of Hilsea Lido of which certain parts can be seen from the M27 and M725 motorways.

On Albert Road, there’s plenty of street art to admire, remember to look up and you might see something quite unexpected. At 1 Albert Road is the immensely popular Garage Lounge – perfect for morning coffee, wonderful lunches or fantastic tea and cake.

Or why not wander through the Palmerston Road precinct to sample the delights of Like a Teatray in the Sky on Osborne Road. Great food, lovely people, a fun vibe and some of the most delightful crockery you are ever likely to see.

As evening approaches head to one of the theatres; the Kings Theatre in Southsea or the New Theatre Royal to see cuttingedge dance, opera, ballet or if you are visiting during the summer months, look out for the open air performances.

But if live music is more your scene, Portsmouth Guildhall boasts a impressive calendar of live music, comedy and shows whilst the Wedgewood Rooms in Southsea is a wellestablished live music venue, playing host to many national and international live acts in the worlds of music and comedy.

Alison Gardiner

Artist and illustrator Alison Gardiner has lived in Southsea for nearly 20 years and is often inspired by the “sea-side village” vibe of the UK’s only island city. Showcasing her work on the front of The Portsmouth Guest Guide, we find out more about Alison’s work and unique souvenirs.

How did your artistic career begin Alison? I moved to Southsea from Hatfield, and at first I did miss the hustle and bustle of being so close to London where I had a studio in Clerkenwell.

My other particular interest is in Architecture. Working with the National Trust and other heritage sites gives me a wonderful array of different architectural styles to illustrate.

I studied printed textiles at college, but moved into illustration for my career quite early on. My first work was in greeting cards, and over the years, I have worked in lots of different areas, including children’s books, consumer magazines, printed textiles and ceramics.

What is your favourite piece and why? I loved creating my Christmas at the Cathedral advent calendar, which is actually an illustration of Canterbury Cathedral. It is an amazing piece of architecture, and it was a real pleasure to be able to make it as festive as possible! When it comes to Portsmouth illustrations, my favourite has to be The Spinnaker Tower; it’s such an iconic monument to the city and its shipping heritage.

Tell us about your style: My preferred medium is gouache and ink. With this technique I have created a distinctive style, which is bright, colourful and eye catching. All my art is hand drawn with no computers involved!

What inspires you? My inspiration often comes from history and architecture. I love to research the history and stories surrounding the place I am illustrating. The past and the present are so often interlinked; for example, whilst designing a tea towel illustrating Garter Day at Windsor Castle for the Royal Collection, I really had to understand the Order of the Garter.

The Order is the oldest British Order of Chivalry, founded in 1348 by Edward III. It was extremely important to get the Members, their ceremonial garments and their position in the pageant procession correct.

How did you get into illustrating souvenirs?

In 2000, I was commissioned by the National Trust to create a mug design for Corfe Castle, in Dorset and that led to a growing range of National Trust mugs. I have now designed over 50 Property mugs and the range gets added to every year.

Jigsaws, notebooks, key rings and fridge magnets followed and the souvenirs range expanded. Since then, I have created bespoke souvenirs for many historic and heritage sites, including our very own, Mary Rose Museum and extended my own Great British, London and Portsmouth collections.

What are your top 5 favourite things to do when in Portsmouth?

1. A cycle along the seafront is always a pleasure.

2. Dining out at the variety of local independent restaurants.

3. Taking the Hovercraft to the Isle of Wight.

4. The fantastic Sourdough bakery, Bread Addiction, on our street, Elm Grove. Their croissants are probably the best this side of the channel.

5. Evensong at the Cathedral; superb choral singing.

If you could illustrate anyone, any place or any event – what would it be? I would love to illustrate some of our great sports events. I have been lucky enough to work with Royal Ascot, illustrating the great characters who are so much part of this event. The America’s Cup World Series is one that is in my sights!

What springs to mind when you think about Portsmouth?

Portsmouth is unique as the only island city in the UK - this geographic feature creates its character. It’s also a city immersed in history, for example D Day, Charles Dickens birthplace; and being home to the creator of Sherlock Holmes and famous engineer, Isambard Kingdom Brunel.

Portsmouth’s seafront location is very special. Where else can you sit on the beach watching a wide variety of different ships sail by only yards away, all against the backdrop of the Isle of Wight!

What are the must-sees and dos? Portsmouth is a city of museums with the centrepiece being the Historic Dockyard.

I highly recommend visiting The Mary Rose Museum to see Henry VIII’s flagship, Mary Rose, which was raised from the seabed and preserved. There’s a lovely café looking out on the stern of HMS Victory and the modern Royal Navy jetty where large warships are often berthed. You can sit with your coffee and see 500 years of Naval history; a unique experience. And no visit to Portsmouth is complete without a harbour tour. Southsea has become a really interesting place for shopping. It has everything from quirky antiques dealers, and unique independent shops to John Lewis. Try Pie and Vinyl in Castle Road, where you can to go for a top quality pie while browsing through vinyl records. That’s pretty specialist!

a theatre of national importance

T

he dignified and beautiful Kings Theatre, situated on Albert Road in Southsea, is one of the best examples of an elegant Edwardian playhouse to be found in the British Isles with many of its original features and Italian Renaissance style of décor still intact.

The theatre, a result of the vision and business acumen of John Waters Boughton and the architectural prowess of Frank Matcham, one of the greatest theatre architects of his time, opened in 1907 in “a most glittering of occasions”.

Since that night numerous productions have visited the Kings - the theatre was the venue for the opening of the famous ‘Aldwych Farces’ and in 1974, Director Ken Russell filmed the Pinball Wizard sequence of the rock opera ‘Tommy’ featuring The Who and Elton John here.

Many stars of the stage and screen have performed at the Kings including Sarah Bernhardt, Noel Coward, Sean Connery, Rex Harrison,

Spike Milligan, Ivor Novello, Sybil Thorndike and HB Irving to name but a few of the greats of the last century and the theatre is proud to include Dillie Keane, Hugh Dennis, Anita Harris and Lisa Reilly as their current Patrons.

Since 2003 the theatre has been operated by Kings Theatre Trust Ltd and over £2million has been spent on an extensive restoration programme to carry out vital repairs, restoration and improve facilities. In 2016 the theatre launched its Big Project which will see major restoration and renovation to create improved facilities and opportunities to ensure the continued enjoyment of the Kings for many generations to come.

HOME OF THE BIG GUNS

The Royal Armouries Museum is home to Britain’s national collection of arms and armour, with sites in Leeds, The White Tower (Tower of London) and Fort Nelson just outside Portsmouth. This world-renowned collection contains over 75,000 objects, including arms, armour and artillery from the early medieval period to the present day, from Europe, Asia and the Americas.

Fort Nelson houses the Royal Armouries’ collection of artillery and historic cannon – the Big Guns – with over 350 on display, tracing the development of artillery from pre-gunpowder siege machines to the modern day.

This vast Victorian fortification, high on the chalk ridge of Portsdown Hill, was built in the 1860s as part of a defensive chain around Portsmouth and its vital Royal Dockyard. It is probably the best surviving example of a Victorian fortress and has been restored to its original 19th-century state, together with parts of its Second World War history.

Visitors can explore the vast 19-acre site to discover secret tunnels and underground chambers, and some of the best panoramic views of Portsmouth Harbour, the Meon Valley and South Downs National Park from the ramparts.

Take a guided tour to unearth the intriguing history of Fort Nelson and imagine the tough life of the Victorian garrison soldiers in the refurbished barracks, kitchen and hospital.

The magnificent Voice of the Guns gallery, showcases 14 of the most distinctive weapons from the national collection, key pieces include sections of the infamous Iraqi Super Gun, antiaircraft guns used to defend the South Coast and the city of Portsmouth during the Second World War, and a medieval wall-smasher, the Great Turkish Bombard, dating to 1464.

The newly configured Artillery Hall displays an extensive range of 20th-century guns. The largest on display being the enormous 200-tonne First World War Railway Howitzer.

Fort Nelson is one of a few places where you can experience live black-powder firings of historic artillery pieces. One of the big guns is fired every day at 1pm and there are special gunfiring events throughout the year.

Cafe 1871 is open daily, serving a wide selection of delicious cakes, snacks and light meals. Relax and enjoy the views from the terrace with a pot of freshly brewed tea or a barista-made coffee.

Enjoy Fort Nelson whatever the weather – there’s stuff to do, things to see, inside, outside and entry’s free.

larence Pier, Southsea is one of the largest amusement parks on the south coast and boasts all manner of amusements, rides and activities for all the family.

Can you rise to the challenge of Pier Pressure? It is the UK’s first double decker urban extreme aerial high ropes challenge course which looks out over Southsea Beach and across the Solent.

Suitable for the whole family, it has 28 different elements for you to navigate from tight ropes to four-inch beams at a height of more than 10 metres, high wire rope bridges and ladders. You don’t have to be ultra fit – just as long as you can climb a set of stairs, and everyone who takes to the ropes is fitted with a harness and given comprehensive safety training from experienced instructors. So what is there to fear?

For those who don’t want to take to the Sky Trail, the new attraction which provides breath-taking stunning views across the Solent is a 32m diameter Solent Wheel. With 24 carriages, you can sit back, relax and take in the ever-changing views and events on the water.

Clarence Pier has even more rides and attractions than ever including the flying dumbo. Another test of bravery, this ride is a must-visit for any adrenaline junkie.

There is also Pirate Pete’s adventure playground; one of the largest indoor children’s playgrounds on the south coast. Children aged 2 and up can take advantage of the wealth of attractions available including Pete’s 100ft pirate ship, with a maze of tunnels and netted walkways, two adventure ball pools, rockin’ rollers, soft play zone and crazy bouncy castles.

Did you also know that the diet onboard was vastly improved by the regular delivery of up to 50 live bullock at any one time? Weevils in biscuits were far less common than popularly suggested and if found in food, the food was not issued and condemned.

New and untold stories of Nelson’s flagship can be seen in the Victory Gallery, which is based in the museum building just opposite Victory. It tells the story about the ship as an object and historical artefact.
