2015 was a wonderful year for new routes and airlines at Southampton Airport. We welcomed VLM for routes to Antwerp and Hamburg and Aer Lingus Regional for a new route to Cork in the Republic of Ireland starting March 2016. We will also be the first airport within the UK to offer scheduled flights with Volotea to Palma starting May 2016 and will be welcoming Dutch airline, KLM, for flights to Amsterdam with worldwide connections again in May. (See page 6 for our map)

We constantly strive to achieve excellence in all that we do within the airport as well as with our partnerships and within our local community. Take a look at what we’ve been up to lately.

2015 AIRPORT HERO Airport Hero Award 2015: Nichola Shaw We recently asked our airport family to vote for the member of staff who they thought went above and beyond in all that they do. We are delighted to announce that our Terminal Operations Assistant, Nichola Shaw, was the winner! We are sure a lot of you will recognise Nichola as she is very heavily involved with the day to day running of our main terminal. Nichola is more than happy to help passengers and assist with members of the public, nothing is too much trouble for her and she is a great example of the friendly service we like to portray at Southampton Airport.

Soller Railway Take the train to Soller and step back in time by 50 years. The vintage carriages of the train run 27 kilometres along its narrow-gauge tracks through the beautiful and unspoilt landscapes, villages, country stations and scenic mountains down into the citrus valley where the town of Soller is situated.

Facts Almost half the entire population of the Balearic Islands live in Palma.

Cathedral Le Seu Palma's pride and joy has to be the cathedral - one of the world’s finest and largest Gothic structures surrounded by a maze of narrow streets of ancient mansions and hidden squares. In front of the cathedral is the Parc de la Mar with its impressive fountains and sculptures. Bellver Castle Set high on a hill and dominating the skyline since the 14th century is Bellver Castle – the only castle in Spain that is totally circular in design. Built in 1309, the castle began as a summer Royal residence and was later used as a prison. Look out for the graffiti on the walls, carved by French prisoners of war.

Forget the images of the All Day English breakfasts and high rises of Magaluf, there is so much more to the picturesque island of Majorca. The sunshine city and capital of the Balearics, Palma, has palacios and promenades, beautiful beaches and beautiful people, chic restaurants and boutique hotels and yet has still managed to retain its old town charm with its lively art scene, rich historical attractions and ancient architecture. Located on the south coast of Majorca, this cosmopolitan vibrant city offers a big-city experience on a small-town scale. With year round appeal and direct flights from Southampton Airport withVolotea in just under 2 and a half hours it’s a great destination that showcases the modern take on its ancient past. Around every corner is a quiet plaza to sit and watch the city’s world go by.

The art scene

Now a hub of old town, the cobbled streets of Placa Major (often referred to as the “artist’s corner”) is home to a number of art galleries, an outdoor craft market and a vast range of bars and restaurants dotted around the edge of the square. If you’re in search of modern and contemporary art, head to the gallery and museum Es Baluard which displays works by Spanish modern artists. Located on the old Palma’s harbour side fortifications, it’s also the perfect spot for a sunset drink with the spectacular views of the harbour.

Fiesta time!

If you time your trip around the national holidays, you’ll be able to soak up the old Spanish tradition of a fiesta where the city comes alive with exhibitions, side stalls and parades of local dancers dressed in traditional costume.

A fascinating historical site, the Banys Arabs highlights to what heights the Arab culture and architecture had reached during the Middle Ages. Its graceful colonnade and proportionate architecture have attracted many architects and history lovers.

The island is also renowned for its great wines …a Merlot or Tempranillo to a Moscate or Prensal Blanc rest assured you’ll be able to accompany your dining experience with a suitably complementary, locally produced wine. It’s believed to have been founded in the 19th century by the 7th Duchess of Bedford, Anna, when it was common to eat only two main meals a day. She found herself weakened with hunger pains each day and therefore decided to take tea and an afternoon snack each afternoon and over time, it became a common practise. Today, it’s considered an occasional luxury to retreat to an exclusive hotel or country house to celebrate a birthday, Mother Day, anniversary or a catch up with friends but it’s certainly a decadent way to spend an afternoon.

Luxury in the Heart of the City

Book a stay away at the hotel with wine at its heart, Hotel TerraVina. Nestled in the beautiful New Forest National Park.

Nestled between Eastleigh and Winchester, in the picturesque village of Hursley, just 9 miles from Southampton Airport, you’ll find The Kings Head. A four star Georgian coaching inn that combines the warmth and comfort of a traditional country pub, with the finesse and elegance of a fine dining establishment. As soon as you step foot in the door you will feel welcomed. From the friendly, attentive team managed by Mark and Penny Thornhill, to the crackling fireplace, cosy corners and home comforts. The restaurant boasts high ceilings and large windows filling it with light. The mixed styles of the furniture gives a rustic feel and adds real character to its charming surroundings. The attention to detail is superb, with fine china and fresh cut flowers on the tables. The menus offer a good selection of choice, whether you are there to enjoy lunch or dinner. Head chef Jenny Jones uses freshly sourced produce and herbs picked from the restaurant's very own garden. Creating food that is nothing short of exquisite, with steak that will melt in your mouth, and desserts that will have you coming back for more. After dinner take a seat at the bar and enjoy the finest quality local ales on offer. If you’re a Gin drinker then their impressive selection of Gins will tantalise you, whilst for those with a sweet tooth the quirky sweet bar is perfect! The Kings Head also offers eight rooms and one suite, each a comfort away from home. Hursley itself has been called home by a number of notable figures, from bishops to royalty and the Cromwell family, and while the rooms hold modern comforts we’ve also paid homage to the inn and area’s rich history. The Edward VI room was named so as that was who wore the crown when Hursley was surrendered in 1552. This particular room boasts a four-poster bed and roll top bath, perfect for unwinding. Being a building of history there are some hidden treasures inside. Below the restaurant in what was

24

previously the cellar, is a function room complete with skittles alley which is ideal for hosting a celebration. You can also be in the safe knowledge that the solid structure of the building means you can celebrate as loud as you like! Out the back of the building you’ll find the pub garden. With wooden furniture, palm trees and strung lanterns, the atmosphere continues on outside. The perfect spot to enjoy a drink in the summer months, and heaters provided for the cooler evenings. You will find it hard to believe you are only 10 minutes from the nearest town. A visit to The Kings Head promises an experience beyond your normal local pub, bringing you traditional British comfort from the moment you step foot in the door to the moment you leave. Contentment is guaranteed. A complimentary glass of wine/beer/soft drink with any main course when you mention The Southampton Airport Breeze Magazine.

A breath of fresh air

CORK

Embrace the Emerald Isle

Escape the bustling city and visit the idyllic seaside town of Cobh and learn about its fascinating links with Irish emigration and the famous ships that visited its port - including the Titanic. Or enjoy a peaceful day strolling along the cliffs by the coast showcasing the rolling hills and wild flowers of the mountainside with the magnificent cathedral dominating your view of the town.

In search of adventure All images © Tourism Ireland

DESTINATION FEATURE

Adventure and outdoor pursuit centres are a plenty from pony trekking on the beach, deep-sea fishing, kayaking, tree climbing at Zipit Forest Adventures to riding the thrills of The Ballyhoura Mountain Bike Trails - the largest trail network of its kind in Ireland! There really is something for everyone, whatever your passion.

One of the jewels in the Emerald Isle’s crown, Cork is a beautiful and popular city break and it’s easy to see why; steeped in history, surrounded by miles of spectacular coastlines and landscapes, colourful villages, must-see activities, fairy-tale castles and sumptuous restaurants serving an authentic taste of Ireland.

Ireland’s second largest city is fast gaining a reputation as one of Europe’s hippest and is only 1½ hours from Southampton Airport with Aer Lingus. Built on islands in the River Lee, the many bridges give the city a continental feel with the Georgian grandeur of its successful past. The birthplace of many a famous face from TV personality Graham Norton, Roy Keane of Manchester United and Munster and Ireland rugby player Ronan O’Gara, its ideal for both city sightseers and outdoor enthusiasts and provides a fantastic base for exploring some of Ireland’s most treasured attractions. Here are just some to kick start your sightseeing tour…

Did you know? At one time Cork had the largest butter market in the world and is still famous for its dairy produce, with local cheeses winning many awards.

26

Soak up the history and culture

Step into the life of the city’s poverty stricken 19th century prisoners that were once housed in the Cork City Gaol - many of them sentenced to hard labour for stealing bread to eat. Bursting with historical and archaeological heritage, experience the sights, sounds and smell of life on the wrong side of the law during the 19th century. The three spires (and chimes) of St Finbarre’s Cathedral are one of Cork’s main landmarks and can be seen, and heard, from all around the city. Step closer and you will be in awe of the French-gothic architecture, step inside and you’ll see for yourself that the interior lives up to the beautiful exterior. Blackrock Castle is a 16th century castle that is now home to an observatory with fascinating exhibitions on stars and space and an interactive floor-to-ceiling screened tour of the universe, which is out of this world! Immerse yourself in Ireland’s finest public art collection outside of Dublin at the Crawford Municipal Art Gallery set in the elegant former customs house built in 1724. At the heart of the gallery lies the famous Canova Casts, a series of plaster casts donated by the Vatican Museum to the Cork Society of Arts in 1818. Connect with us

Did you know?

Food & Drink

Cork is known as the gourmet capital of Ireland and is a diner’s delight with so many places to eat in and around the city. Tantalise your taste buds with a barista-made brew in the cafes, a hearty traditional Irish stew in a gastro pub or choose between the array of trendy restaurants and bars with something for everyone on the menu. Sample the delights of the locally produced artisan goods ranging from Cork’s famous pastries, honey to craft beers and handmade chocolates. To accompany your culinary delight of Cork, visit the Old Midleton Distillery, the world’s biggest pot still for making whiskey. It has a capacity of 31,618 gallons.

Shopping

If shopping is your bag, explore the indoor and outdoor markets and shopping districts that Cork has to offer. Patrick Street is the main shopping area and home to Brown Thomas, the oldest department store in the city as well as the major high street stores. For something different try the French Quarter for interesting book shops, small boutiques specialising in Irish crafts and antiques or the Coal Quay market which is great for second hand goods and antiques. Blarney Castle

The 13 arch bridge in the village of Glanworth was built in the mid-15th century structure and is said to be the narrowest and oldest public bridge in everyday use in Europe.

Must sees

• No visit to Cork is complete without visiting Blarney Castle to kiss the Blarney Stone in the hope of gaining more eloquent speech! • For an amazing 360 degree view of the city, climb to the top of St Anne's Church - you can even have a go at ringing the Shandon Bells yourself. •

Explore the English Market, a Victorian food market under beautifully ornate vaulted ceilings that specialises in selling their artisan goods and tempting local produce such as smoked salmon and ballycotton potatoes. •

Take a trip out to West

Cork to experience some fantastic whale & dolphin watching on the Irish Coast. Whales, dolphins, seals and seabirds are often spotted on this coastline of outstanding natural beauty.

That ’s interesting... Cork Harbour is said to be the second largest natural harbour in the world, after Sydney Harbour in Australia.

Cork got its nickname ‘The Rebel County’ due to a history of independence from the Viking invasions to the Irish War of Independence, when it was the scene of a considerable amount of fighting. J ohn F Kennedy’s great grandfather came from West Cork. St. Colman’s Catholic Cathedral in Cobh has the

largest number of Carillon Bells in Ireland

the ill-fated Titanic’s last port of call in 1912.

Relax and unwind in the warmth of the sun with Southampton Airport’s sun-trap destinations! Perfect for family holidays and romantic getaways. Alicante - A destination that offers everything you look for in a summer holiday; long sandy beaches, places to explore, an exciting eating scene and thriving nightlife. This attractive Spanish city is home to a castle, old quarter and long waterfront. Climb to the top of the medieval Castillo de Santa Bárbara, set on a hilltop and enjoy the sweeping views of the Mediterranean coast. Popular all year round with a hum of activity 7 days a week.

Money for Nothing

FARO

- the rise of the SME Corporate Airline Reward Scheme If you’re reading this as a business traveller on behalf of a FTSE100 company, the chances are your organisation has a direct corporate relationship with the airlines you fly on most often.

Malaga - A port city on southern Spain’s Costa del Sol. Famed for its rich

architectural history, delicious Mediterranean cuisine, outstanding local wines and beautiful sandy beaches as well as being the birthplace of Picasso. Rising over its modern skyline are two hillside citadels that bring culture, history and the chance for exploration. Its maritime location means there’s plentiful fresh produce and exceptional seafood, with its fine dining being compared to that of Barcelona.

However, for many of us this isn’t a practical proposition and so most major airline groups have developed business reward programs which incentivise “undealt” companies for travel purchased.

Faro - Faro is the best-known city in Portugal’s deservedly famous Algarve region. Offering some 200km of idyllic island beaches, full of history and culture, and the stunning Ria Formosa nature reserve. With some of the best recreational facilities available in Western Europe, including great shops, restaurants, theatres and galleries, conveniently all in walking distance from its center. It’s growing reputation make it a location not to be missed when visiting the Algarve.

MAJORCA

These programs are in addition to the frequent flyer benefits enjoyed by individual travellers. Each scheme varies slightly and is administered differently, but the bottom line is that they are cost-free and can significantly reward companies with “free” tickets, upgrades, on-board wifi, hotel accommodation and more besides.

Palma - Palma is a resort city and capital of the Spanish island of Majorca, in the

western Mediterranean. One of Europe’s most dramatic cathedrals dominates the skyline, while the maze of an old town delivers cobbled lanes packed with tiny tapas bars. It’s nearby beaches offer ample space for enjoying the warm sands, whilst it’s promenades offer restaurants and bars dotting the coastline. Palma also boasts some of the country’s best museums, shops and nightlife.

There’s no downside to joining these programmes...

Corsica - Described as “A French island basking in the Italian sun”, Corsica is a

mountainous island with plenty to delve into! Relax on its remote beaches or explore its stylish coastal towns, dense forest and craggy peaks. It’s been part of France since 1768, but retains a distinct Italian flavour. With its sublime mix of astonishing scenery and thriving culture, this stunning island still remains relatively unknown to British holidaymakers.

They come with no real strings attached – there’s no revenue or market share commitment and no annual review. As long as your organisation has a company registration/VAT registration number and a couple of frequent flyer card carrying travellers, you can join. The process involves the nomination of a scheme administrator and a quick session of online form filling. Once enrolled you just need

CORSICA

Biarritz - On the south-western coast of France just 8km west of Bayonne, the

ritzy town of Biarritz has grown in popularity over the past few years. A major surfing destination, with its beaches home to many surf schools and an annual international competition, it’s no surprise surfers flock here with the offering of some of the best waves in Europe. By night a busy nightlife scene encompasses late-night bars, clubs and a grand beachside casino, the Barrière.

Toulon Hyeres - Found in the South of France on the Mediterranean coast,

28

Toulon is fast becoming a popular destination for holidaymakers. Steeped in history with its narrow streets, small squares and many fountains, it’s also an important centre for fishing and wine making. From stunning beaches to hidden rocky coves, as well as lively, family-friendly resort areas, most of which are within easy reach of the city centre.

DESTINATION FEATURE

“Of course there are the must-see and must-do attractions when visiting the bright lights of New York such as standing in Times Square, a show on Broadway, the heights of the Empire State Building, the ferry trip to Liberty Island and the Statue of Liberty and not forgetting the poignant 9/11 Memorial honouring the memory of those who lost their lives in the attack at the World Trade Centre. The list can be endless but we wanted to get away from the masses and really ‘feel’ New York.

BIG LIGHTS GREAT CITY

Rooftop Bars *2 30 FIFTH is New York’s largest outdoor rooftop garden. * The Refinery Hotel offers cinematic views with DJs and jazz performers.

TODAY'S FAVOURITES

CRAFT BEERS…AND THE CRAFTY PINT

“With all that exploration, we deserved a pint! Did you know that New York has been witness to an explosion in the craft beer industry? A few years ago a number of bar owners got together to create The Good Beer Seal which is awarded to those bars who serve the best beers from local, national and international producers. There are around 65 bars in NYC, New Jersey and Long Island that have been awarded the Good Beer Seal – here are three of our favourites:

Breeze Magazine Editor, Jo, shares with us her recent bite of the Big Apple – exploring this great city from a different perspective. MY TOPS TIPS FOR SIGHTSEEING:

34

GREAT VIEWS Instead of taking the ferry to Liberty Island and joining the queues of people, we headed to Battery Park and took the free Staten Island Ferry, we had a great view of Downtown and the Statue of Liberty. It was so simple; jump off one boat and jump back on the return ferry! BEST SKYLINE views we chose the “Top of the Rock” Observation Deck at the Rockefeller Center. At 850-foot, the building is shorter than the Empire State Building but the views are just as breath-taking and perfect to do when you first arrive as it gives you the lay of the land plus the best view of

the monumental Empire State Building and Central Park in all its glory. ICONIC SKYSCRAPERS Walk across the Brooklyn Bridge and look back at the skyscrapers of Lower Manhattan. It certainly gave us a different perspective as we looked back at the skyscrapers – something which is quite hard to do as you walk around the ‘concrete jungle’. Once across the bridge, we strolled around Brooklyn Heights and into DUMBO – the area underneath the two bridges where there are a number of interesting shops, restaurants, art galleries and arty venues. We recommend a hot chocolate and a cookie from Jacques Torres Chocolate (66 Water Street, Brooklyn) and

then to sit back in either Empire Fulton Ferry Park or Brooklyn Bridge Park where you’ll be greeted with fantastic views back across Manhattan including both bridges. As we were doing New York ‘our way’, we chose to walk back into the city over the Manhattan Bridge with beautiful views of Lower Manhattan and the Brooklyn Bridge itself.” UNEXPECTED From the end of March for two weeks the popular department store Macy’s comes alive with spectacular floral displays consisting of millions of live flowers, plants and trees from around the world – all which bloom in unison. A perfect combination of shopping and flowers! Connect with us

Jimmy’s No.43 – East Village, 43 E. 7th St. This bar specialises in sour and Belgium beers. Rattle ‘n’ Hum – Midtown East, 14 E. 33rd St. Close to the Empire State Building with around 70 beers on tap and a great food menu too. The Ginger Man – Midtown East, 11 E 36th St. A huge beer and whisky selection with daily beer and food menus – be sure to try the Ginger Man Hotdog!

BEST TIME TO VISIT? “The Spring is an ideal time to visit the big city, we visited in March and enjoyed a day and night of thick snow ahead of a day of clear blue skies and sunshine. Seeing Central Park covered in glistening snow against the bright blue sky was simply magical and everything you see in the movies”

In the exciting ‘city that never sleeps’, we found a unique way to see everything we had on our list. Think big and explore new areas. It’s a metropolis with everything at your fingertips so be sure to venture far and wide to see the best of it.”

Dear Southampton Airport, Next month we have been married 60 years and for our Honeymoon we went to St Helier Jersey and had a wonderful week there. The aeroplane we travelled on was a Dakota and the runway was grass with a strip of concrete. As we started the flight a steward came round with a brown paper bag for each of us and a barley sugar sweet to suck on in case of sickness. We are so pleased to hear on Radio Solent about how busy you have been this past year. Yours Truly, Mrs M. McDonal

Mrs McDonald also sent us some memorabilia such as their flight ticket as well as the receipt from the duty free shop and their taxi receipt for the journey to the airport. They bought a musical box and a Kershaw 110 Camera which came to the total price of 2 pounds, 7 shillings and 6 pence. Congratulations to both Mr and Mrs McDonald on their 60th anniversary and we wish you many more happy years together!
