It’s been a fantastic few months for us here at Southampton Airport especially as we have just recorded our busiest summer which reflects the ever increasing range of airlines and routes on offer to passengers. Some of our new routes include, amongst others, year round services to Cork, Lyon and Munich as well as new seasonal routes such as Ibiza for next summer. We are constantly working towards providing an even greater choice of destinations so please check our website and social media for up to date information on the latest new routes including those for 2017.

19 20

As well as increasing the number of exciting destinations from Southampton, we constantly strive to provide you with an excellent level of customer service. We are continuing to invest in new technology, providing more convenient facilities as well as upgrading our priority products, such as our Priority Lounge facility located upstairs in the departure lounge. It was therefore particularly pleasing to be awarded the Airport of the Year award in October by the European Regions Airlines Association. I hope that your experience today has been fast and easy and where you have encountered a member of staff that you have found them to be friendly and courteous. Thank-you for using Southampton Airport and we look forward to welcoming you again in the near future.

Airport news We constantly strive to achieve excellence in all that we do within the airport as well as with our partnerships and within our local community. Take a look at what we’ve been up to lately.

Airport of the Year

Southampton Airport has been awarded the Airport of the Year 2016 Award by the European Regions Airline Association. This is a huge honour for us and we are very grateful to the ERA for this wonderful award. To all of the passengers who continue to travel through the airport… thank you, we couldn’t have done it without you!

Southampton Airport comes top for passenger assistance Southampton Airport has come out top in a new CAA report released in September that rates airports on their quality of assistance for passengers with a disability or reduced mobility. 30 UK airports were assessed on how well they support passengers with a disability or reduced mobility and the report shows that overall UK airports provide a high quality of assistance. 10 airports were rated ‘very good’ for their performance including Southampton Airport!

Airplane at the Airport On October 1st we invited the Eastleigh Film Festival into the terminal for an exclusive screening of the hit 80’s film, Airplane! The screening was a huge success with over 100 people coming to watch the comedy. There was even some fancy dress involved.

Staff at the airport who travel the extra mile At Southampton Airport we pride ourselves on helping to make our passenger’s journey as easy as possible. Our Breeze Through Awards recognise and reward those staff who go the extra mile.

June - Lyn Cole Lyn was a superstar recently when she looked after a young girl who became ill after going through security. Lyn received huge praise from the girl’s parents for her compassion and knowledge whilst dealing with the situation. Well done Lyn!

Get in touch...

August - Nichola Shaw Nichola recently went above and beyond in her role when a flight was delayed. Nichola put her day on hold to look after all the passengers and ensured that they were all comfortable and kept up to date with the flight information. Thank you Nichola!

Has anyone at Southampton Airport gone the extra mile for you? If you’d like to recognise an exceptional member of staff, please tell us at: www.southamptonairport.com/feedback

Walk the floor with...

Are you interested to know what happens behind the scenes of your favourite airport? We asked our newest recruit in the fire department, Leanne Watters.

What does your day-to-day job involve? Every shift starts with an inspection of the vehicles, breathing apparatus and a trip to the fire ground to ensure everything is in working order. Daily duties include testing all equipment, cleaning of the vehicles, testing of fire alarms and wildlife hazard management. A huge part of the job is training to keep our skills current and to the highest standard. We train both practically and theoretically in a huge variety of areas including; external fires, internal fires, casualty search and rescue, tactics and techniques, first aid, dressing drills, knots and lines, aircraft familiarisation, map reading and so much more. Every shift is different but we are prepared and ready to go at a moment’s notice. What is your favourite part of being a fire fighter? It has to be the practical training sessions, you never know what is going to be thrown at you and the adrenaline rush you get when

10

the training rig is set alight is unbelievable. No situation is ever the same and I learn something new every time we train. What training did you have to go through to become a fire fighter? My initial training consisted of a 5-week residential course where alongside nine other recruits we learnt everything from ladder drills to aircraft design. I really enjoyed learning about the breathing apparatus, this is one of the most important pieces of kit we use as it keeps us alive and allows us to enter otherwise un-survivable areas. The final week was by far the best week, a week on the fire ground attending a variety of different incidents tackling fire after fire. What made you decide to become a fire fighter? It’s always been the childhood dream to become a fire fighter, and even now when we drive up the runway in convoy in the big red trucks I still can’t quite believe it’s me sat in there! I have always liked the idea of working

closely as part of a team and being there for people when they need you the most. What is your favourite destination from Southampton? I love skiing so the ski packages on offer from Southampton Airport are perfect for me. I have enjoyed many ski trips to both France and Austria and am currently in the process of choosing this year’s ski holiday! What is your favourite aircraft? I was on shift when the Lancaster Bomber landed at Southampton Airport; while it was on the ground I was fortunate enough to have a look around and was completely amazed with everything!! Though Southampton Airport would not be the same without the Dash 8! What is your favourite thing to do outside of work? Outside of work I am a keen triathlete, so when not at work I will often be swimming, cycling, running or all 3!

Small Great Things - Jodi PICOULT When a new-born baby dies after a routine hospital procedure, there is no doubt about who will be held responsible: the nurse who had been banned from looking after him by his father. What the nurse, her lawyer and the father of the child cannot know is how this death will irrevocably change all of their lives, in ways both expected and not. Small Great Things is about prejudice and power; it is about that which divides and unites us. It is about opening your eyes.

Holding - Graham NORTON Graham Norton’s masterful debut is an intelligently crafted story of love, secrets and loss. The remote Irish village of Duneen has known little drama; and yet its inhabitants are troubled. So when human remains are discovered on an old farm, suspected to be that of Tommy Burke - a formerlove of both Brid and Evelyn - the village’s dark past begins to unravel, anger, resentment, secrets and regret. Magpie Murders - Anthony HOROWITZ From Sunday Times bestseller Anthony Horowitz comes Magpie Murders, his deliciously dark take on the cosy crime novel, brought bang- upto-date with a fiendish modern twist.

Mount - Jilly COOPER In Jilly Cooper’s latest, raciest novel, Rupert Campbell-Black takes centre stage in the cut-throat world of flat racing. Rupert is consumed by one obsession: that Love Rat, his adored grey horse, be proclaimed champion stallion. He longs to trounce Roberto’s Revenge, the stallion owned by his detested rival Cosmo Rannaldini, which means abandoning his racing empire at Penscombe and his darling wife Taggie, and chasing winners in the richest races worldwide, from Dubai to Los Angeles to Melbourne.

Peggy and Me - Miranda HART The hilarious and heart-warming memoir of Miranda and her life changing dog, the inimitable and most lovable Peggy.

Swing Time - Zadie SMITH An ambitious, exuberant new novel moving from north west London to West Africa, from the multi-award-winning author of White Teeth and On Beauty. Dazzlingly energetic and deeply human, Swing Time is a story about friendship and music and stubborn roots. The Pigeon Tunnel - John LE CARRE From his years serving in British Intelligence during the Cold War, to a career as a writer that took him from war-torn Cambodia to Beirut on the cusp of the 1982 Israeli invasion, to Russia before and after the collapse of the Berlin Wall, John le Carré has always written from the heart of modern times. In this, his first memoir, le Carré is as funny as he is incisive - reading into the events he witnesses the same moral ambiguity with which he imbues his novels.

p u s ’ Snow ude! d

Knee injuries, often involving trauma to a combination of the medial collateral ligament (MCL), the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL), or the cartilage, account for a third of all Alpine ski injuries. If you are hitting the slopes this winter, Winchester GP’s Dr Tom Willsher has some top tips to avoid returning home on crutches. • • • • • • •

Prepare your body for skiing -Pre-season quads exercises will strengthen the muscles which support your knee. Check your bindings to ensure they are appropriately set. Avoid wide snowplough. Keep your legs bent when falling. Don't try to get up after falling until you've stopped sliding Don't jump - unless you know how. Watch out for boarders (and sometimes skiers) crashing into you from behind - a major cause of ACL damage.

Tips for Speedy Security

Too late? How bad is it?

When it comes to a suspected knee injury, seek a skilled examination and investigation as quickly as possible, as this leads to appropriate management and the best recovery outcomes. See a doctor if: • The knee is obviously deformed. • You can’t put weight on it. • It’s very swollen, particular if this happened fast (within 2 hours of the injury). • You can’t straighten your knee fully. • Your knee is severely tender.

How can we mend it doctor? •

Initially, think RICE- Rest, Ice, Compression (wool and crepe bandaging) and Elevation. • Your doctor may consider a cricket pad splint (to keep the knee straight and protect it) and you may also need crutches. • Anti-inflammatories, initially for the pain, and regularly for a week after, even if not in pain. • During the rehabilitation period, you will be given quad (thigh) exercises to help strengthen the muscles around the knee and stabilise it. • In the case of severe and complex injuries, you may require surgery. If, in spite of all your preparation, you do get unlucky, take heart that most knee injuries have a good long term prognosis. Bon Ski!

The best Christmas treat ever!

That magical time of year is fast approaching…so why not break the habit of staying at home and reward yourself with a Christmas the family will never forget. Capture the warm cheer and good tidings of the Yuletide in Lapland where you can meet the big man himself or celebrate Disney-style at Disneyland Paris, it’s what Christmas dreams are made of! Christmas treats don’t get much better than going to Lapland and meeting the real Santa Claus. Dash through the snow on a sleigh pulled by reindeer, a toboggan or a snowmobile and meet the man himself, tour the workshop where the elves are busy at work and even help Mrs Claus bake cookies. From the moment you disembark your flight, it’ll be an advent adventure that the children will be talking about for years. Lapland is an area of intense natural beauty and offers so much more…unending views of snow-clad pine trees, frozen rivers, vast expanses of tundra and big enchanting skies, it really is the perfect winter wonderland. Award-winning Lapland Specialist, Canterbury Travel, captures the spirit of Christmas with a truly authentic Enchanting Lapland day trip to meet Santa in his homeland. The main event is obviously meeting the man himself but equally as exciting will be the snowmobile and sleigh transfer from the grounds of Enontekiö Airport to the snowy woodland and the visit to a snow igloo with beautiful ice sculptures on display.

Prices start from £465 with flights departing from 20th December www.santa-holidays.com 14

Warm up with some winter sun Escape the winter (albeit for a few days) and head for the sun with a last minute holiday from Southampton Airport. There are some fantastic winter sun destinations to choose from with short flying times...here are just two.

Faro, Portugal

Faro is often overshadowed by larger resorts of the Algarve but it’s this very point that allows the compact city to retain its peaceful ambience and traditional charm. Take a water taxi along the coastline of Faro’s beautiful, quiet beaches; meander around the cobbled streets of the Old Town or take a boat trip around the Ria Formosa Nature Reserve to your very own desert island. Fly to: Faro International Airport Flight time: 2 hours 30 mins

Did you know?

Portugal accounts for about 50% of the worlds cork production and are used by leading brands such as Moet Chandon and Rolls Royce, by Airbus and NASA.

Why book with Southampton Airport Direct Travel? Alicante, Spain

Lap up the warm winter sun on one of the many internationally recognised beaches of the Costas. This vibrant Valencian city offers a beach for everyone and is the perfect destination for year-round water sports. Enjoy the crystal clear waters aboard a jet ski, explore the underwater world snorkelling or head to the lively marina and raise a glass of Sangria to the sensational winter sunset. Fly to: Alicante-Elche Flight time: 2 hours 30 mins

Did you know?

According to the World Health Organisation, the Costa Blanca has one of the healthiest climates in Europe. Its warm temperatures throughout the year, clean air and low rainfall make it a particularly good place to live for those who suffer from arthritis or asthma.

World Cruising Top of our list: Best for

Disney Royal Caribbean Carnival P&O Cruises

You may be forgiven for thinking that all cruise lines are the same but think again. They all offer something different offering experiences based on the age and size of the ship, the destination and the time of year you’re sailing. And, to make it even harder to choose, each ship has its own personality too!

Where to go:

When to go:

First things first, pick a cruise based on the destinations you want to visit whether that’s a sun-soaked Caribbean adventure, cultural jaunts around the Med, an epic world cruise or a Norwegian escapade.

Do you need to schedule around school breaks or want to avoid children? Is your main goal to escape the freezing British winter or are you celebrating a special occasion? Are you flexible as this might offer a great deal? Answers to these questions will influence which season is best.

There are boutique and small vessels to resortstyle ships and the size of the ship can dictate the itinerary as smaller ships can dock at smaller ports. cosy city retreats The winter is no excuse to stay inside when you could be enjoying some amazing places from Southampton Airport.

The best things to do on a winters day…

Wrap and walk… Don your layers and blow the cobwebs away.

Have a hot chocolate… It’s what wintry days were made for!

Keep warm…

Image : Skating & Speyside Cooperage images © visit Scotland

Head indoors and take in some art, a museum or peruse the shops.

Find a pub with a roaring fire… There’s no better place to warm up than with a pint beside a crackling fire.

Get your skates on… Take to the ice amidst iconic locations.

It may be cold outside but there are many great places that offer a special warmth at this time of the year. Why not wrap up warm and enjoy the crisp, fresh wintry air of Paris, Aberdeen or the Alps. A Parisian Winter

Warm up from the inside out

Paris transforms from the City of Lights to the City of Fairy Lights with trees strung with garlands of shimmering light and festive illuminations. Hop aboard a Flybe flight from Southampton Airport into Paris Orly or Paris Charles De Gaulle, there is so much to do. One word of advice…since this is shopping season, be sure to pack lightly so you have enough space in your suitcase for holiday delicacies and gifts to bring back home. • Enjoy a mesmerising wintery walk through a gorgeous Parisian park. • Say Bonne Année and celebrate New Year’s Eve at the city’s largest gathering at the Champs-Elysees. • Find a traditional Parisian café and share a cosy meal with a glass (or bottle!) of champagne. • Hit the department store districts to take in the sights of their amazing window scenes. • Head indoors and explore the many museums and stunning galleries of the city.

One way to keep snug is to sip your way through the Speyside Malt Whisky Trail taking in seven world-famous working distilleries, one historic distillery and the fascinating Speyside Cooperage - one thing is for sure, you won’t be worrying about the weather! www.speysidewhiskytours.com

A warm Scottish welcome awaits

Take me there... See page 5 for our table of flight schedules www.southamptonairport.com/ direct-travel www.southamptonairport.com

The Scottish always offer a warm welcome so board a flight from Southampton Airport to Aberdeen with Eastern, and join the St Andrew’s Day celebrations or sparkling Hogmanay and Burns Night festivities. This historic and cultural city is rich in wildlife, nature and sport too and brimming with great events, unique entertainment, shopping experiences and festive cheer to warm up winter nights.

Warm your soul on the slopes One of the best things about the winter is the lure of a ski trip - the mountaintops are absolutely magical and the views can warm the coldest of days! Within 3 hours of taking off from Southampton Airport, you can be enjoying the pure mountain air, glistening slopes and impressive scenery of the French Alps offering the best ski resorts of any country in the world.

Snowy getaways can be fun even when you’re not up for skiing or snowboarding, have a go at these: Husky sledding - drive through the snowy forest paths on a sledge pulled by beautiful husky dogs Fine dining – get all romantic and have a moonlit dinner on the slopes Snow-shoeing – enjoy the wintry mountains from the marked hiking trails Relaxation and pampering – turn your alpine adventure into a spa-centric experience at the resort’s spa Sledding – enjoy the child-like thrill aboard a sledge

…and after all that, sit back and enjoy an invigorating soak in an al fresco hot tub.

Don’t hesitate New Year, New Adventures

At the end of every year, we all vow to make a difference in our lives for the year ahead. Why not pick a New Year resolution that you can stick to and more importantly, enjoy! Here’s some travel-related resolutions that will make your holidays in 2017 unlike any other: Pick a destination that you have never been to before: •

For cultural lovers, head to Lake Garda and enjoy music, art, theater and exhibitions (flight time of 2 hours and 25 mins) Head to Munich to taste the best beer in the world at a traditional beer festival (arrive within 1 hour 45 minutes) Cycle around the island of Alderney, just 3 miles long and 1.5 miles wide (hop across within 45 minutes) Try a city break closer to home for some retail therapy in Glasgow (a short 30 minute flight).

Try a new activity: •

• •

Hit the slopes and try out the world famous winter sports of Innsbruck (in under 2 hours) Set sail on a chartered boat around Corsica (flight time of just 2 hours) Head to Ibiza with Volotea (in just over 2 hours) to snorkel around the sandy coves of Portinatx village or windsurf at S’Arenal Grand and S’Arenal Petit. Learn to play golf in the Algarve (fly to Faro in 2 hours 30 minutes) Get down on the dancefloor (or mud if it rains!) of Leeds Festival 25-27 August 2017 (be there within 49 minutes).

Do things differently: Wake up early - Sunrise is not only a magical time for photos but also allows you to enjoy the surroundings/ attractions all by yourself (and avoids the crowds!) Speak the lingo – If you go abroad, don’t be afraid to try and speak the local dialect, the locals will love that you are trying to interact this way. Get lost on purpose – To see where and how real people live & work, set off on foot without knowing exactly where you’re going. Take a note of your hotel (just in case you need to catch a taxi back) and head off in any direction. Eat the local food - Taste a bit of everything, especially if you don’t know what it is. Ask the restaurants for recommendations and enjoy the local delicacies. Food image above © Gurnsey food feastival
