Cold Brew coffee liqueur from awardwinning distillers, right here in Dorset.

WINTER 2018

WELCOME to the BREEZE WINTER edition

As this year draws to a close it gives me great pleasure, as the new Managing Director, to reflect on yet another incredible year at Southampton Airport.

Its time to forget everything you know about coffee liqueur. Conker Cold Brew uses Grade 1 forest-grown Speciality coffees from Brazil and Ethiopia to capture the true taste of espresso. No flavourings, additives or thickeners. Simply the best coffees we could lay our hands on.

We had a flying start to 2018 by being the first airport in Europe to test an innovative ornithoper, Robird®, developed by Clear Flight Solutions. This fascinating project has allowed us to deter real birds away from the airport, thus avoiding unwanted bird activity, and landed Southampton Airport first place at the South Coast Business Awards for the Best Use of Technology.

And from deterring birds to being up with the birds, it gives me great pride to say that in September I was amongst a group of my fellow colleagues from the airport jumping out of a plane for our Charity Partner, Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance, and we raised an astonishing £10,000. With the £20,000 raised from our Runway Run, I am very pleased to say that we’ve hit our fundraising target for this year, however we will be pushing to go even further in 2019!

6 News

And finally I am very excited to oversee the launch of our new draft Master Plan that sets out the vision and growth path for the airport over the next 20 years, highlighting the development of a runway extension as well as the expansion of the existing terminal facilities, ultimately offering more connections and more choice for our passengers in the years ahead. This comes in direct response to what you have told us for some time: that you want to use Southampton Airport for more and more leisure and business routes, and we hope our future plans will meet with your expectations.

It is an exciting time for us here at Southampton Airport, and we can’t wait to build the future with you. Have a wonderful journey wherever you are flying to today, and we look forward to seeing you again very soon.

On 8 September our amazing airport staff and business partners conquered their fears and skydived from a plane at 10,000ft, with some people taking it even higher to 15,000ft, in support of our Charity Partner, Hampshire and Isle of Wight Air Ambulance. The skydive took place at Old Sarum Airfield, and we raised more than £10,000! We would like to thank everyone for their astonishing support that pushed us through this breathtaking activity, and we are already planning our next event to raise even more funds for the fabulous HIOWAA charity.

MATTHEW BRIERLEY

Walk The Floor With… Matthew Brierley, Airside Operations and Safety Duty Officer What does your daily job involve? My job is to provide an effective hour-by-hour management and control of the airside operational areas, ensuring that any service provided, related to aircraft ground handling, airside operations and airside safety, meets all statutory and mandatory practices. Whilst I’m on shift I’m accountable for all airside inspections, surface and lighting, runway friction analysis and I also lead Winter Operations for the department. What is your favourite part of what you do? Winter Operations is the most favourite part of my job, I currently lead the Operations Department in Winter Operations making sure all of our snow clearing kit and snow clearing teams are ready and trained for any winter event we may experience. This also gives me the opportunity to drive my beloved tractor Daisy Mae. I also enjoy leading and being a part of my team, who all do a fantastic job keeping the airfield safe. How long have you been with Southampton Airport? I have been working at the airport for 8 years. What training did you have to go through before you could do this job? Initially I had to do a three-month training to be an Airside Controller which was pretty intense with a lot to learn, but as you go through your training it all comes together like a jigsaw. When I got promoted I had to do a further two months of training learning the more advanced topics of the job whilst learning how to line manage a team. What made you decide to work in aviation/at the airport? I have always been interested in the aviation world since I was a kid, I think now that I work in the aviation/airport world I will be here until I retire in 34 years time. What do you like about working at Southampton Airport? What makes Southampton Airport is the staff who work here, we are like one big family who have good days and bad days. What has been the highlight of your time working here? The highlight of my job is when we have snow here at the airport as we all come together, working long hard days and nights clearing snow and keeping the operational disruption to a minimum. I guess I should also note the day when we had the Olympic Torch arrive at Southampton Airport. What is your favourite aircraft? Hard question, I prefer my John Deere tractor Daisy Mae but if I had to pick one it would be the 757200 or Piaggio P180 Avanti. What is your favourite destination from Southampton Airport? My favourite destination would have to be Faro in the Algarve region of Portugal, it is a relaxing place where I can enjoy some sun, sea and a bit of golf. What is your favourite thing to do outside of work? I enjoy spending time with my girlfriend and my kids, I also like to have a game of golf and to beat my colleague Ian on Battlefield 1. I love going on a holiday, and every year I make sure I spend some time away with my work colleagues visiting historical sites and relaxing.

Vicky dealt with an elderly lady who had never visited the United Kingdom before. She had flown in from Amsterdam on the KLM flight and her onward journey was to Alderney. She was unable to get that flight due to the KLM flight being delayed, when she landed she couldn’t deal with any Aurigny staff as they were all airside and there was no more flights for that day. Vicky intervened and made her feel comfortable, she rebooked her flight for the next morning and found her a hotel to stay in for the night. If it wasn’t for Vicky this lady would have been left on her own in a country she didn’t know. Vicky has gone beyond her own job and taken customer service to another level!

Looking into the bright future of

SOUTHAMPTON AIRPORT

O

ne step ahead of the snow Winter Operations at the airport Matthew Brierley, Operations Lead explains more

Master Plan - a positive ambition for the airport as a key transport and economic asset for the region. September of 2018 has seen the nation glued to TV screens and smartphones, holding breath on the Brexit negotiations. However there was one piece of news that shot through all the Brexit noise with a potential to change the economy of our local region – after a long wait we at Southampton Airport have finally revealed our vision of the airport’s future in the draft Master Plan 2037.

International connectivity is a key element in the future of any regional economy International connectivity is a key element in the future of any regional economy, and Southampton Airport always thrived to be the top regional airport in the UK. As its last Master Plan was released back in 2006 and could never realise its full potential due to the global recession of 2007/8, a lot of people felt that the update was well overdue. This has now become possible in 2018, following a steady recovery in the UK economy plus a focus on new route development that has helped grow passenger volumes to a new high of over two million in 2017. The draft Master Plan includes the development of a runway starter extension, and by increasing the runway by 10% the airport will have a potential to open up a whole new spectre of destinations, such as Frankfurt, Stockholm, Copenhagen, Barcelona, Prague and Milan. So whether you are planning your next family holiday, a romantic summer getaway or a quick city break at any time of the year, Southampton Airport will become the key connection between

12

the Hampshire region and the rest of Europe, Scandinavia and even Eastern Mediterranean. A demand for new destinations goes side-by-side with a demand for new infrastructure, and with our ambition to welcome four million passengers by 2027 and five million passengers by 2037, it comes to no surprise that certain changes within the terminal need to take place. Therefore the draft Master Plan highlights the new terminal extension with additional check-in facilities such as self-service boarding pass kiosks and automated baggage drop-off points. Passenger comfort will be improved through enhanced retail, duty free and food and beverage facilities, and a new Executive Lounge will be realised as part of the terminal redevelopment. Southampton Airport is one of the largest employers in the region with nearly 1,000 staff employed on site and nearly 2,900 employed in the wider region, in total generating over £160m each year for the regional economy.

With the future development outlined in the draft Master Plan 2037, the airport will act as a catalyst for the ambitions of the region and will be able to provide 500 additional jobs onsite, while doubling the number of our employees in the wider economy, therefore realising a potential £400m economic contribution to the region per annum by 2037. We have conducted a six-week consultation, where members of the public voiced their views on the draft Master Plan. This will now enable us to realise the ambitious plans while making sure that all environmental and community aspects have been taken into full account. However there is no doubt that delivering the Master Plan provides the opportunity for Southampton Airport to significantly boost its contribution to the local, regional and national economy. So whether you live close to the airport or frequently use it for its “breeze-through” nature, there is definitely plenty to get excited about.

Don’t forget to Tweet a photo of you and Breeze Magazine at one of our destinations #BreezeThrough

In March 2018 The Beast from the East took the whole of the UK by surprise, putting the entire country into the snowy gridlock. With the Met Office predicting the comeback of the extreme weather conditions this season, Southampton Airport is at the forefront of its Winter Operations, ensuring the safety of our passengers. Planning and preparation is the key to success when it comes to the ability to manage whatever nature unleashes on an airport. But how exactly does Southampton Airport prepare for the winter season? We’ve asked our Winter Operations Lead, Matthew Brierley, to explain... Whilst Southampton’s passengers jet off to a variety of holiday destinations in the summer months, the airport is busy planning for its winter season. Most people think once winter is over then we don’t need to worry about it until October, however this is far from reality. Clearing the Snow To keep the airport open in the winter, the runway and taxiway must be clear of snow and ice, with sufficient snow and frost-free parking positions. This means that we have to clear an area of more than 127,500m2 – an equivalent of 17.5 football pitches! And this is where the Airside Operations department’s clearing equipment comes into play.

During the snow clearing the tractors drive in an echelon formation pushing the snow to the sides of the runway and taxiway. Once the runway and taxiway have been ploughed, the team use the BEMA brushes (from Germany)attached to the back of the tractors to clear up any slush on the paved surface making sure all surfaces are to what we call “back to black”. The John Deere tractor with deicer follows on behind spraying chemical liquid to melt away any ice on the surface and bring the paved friction levels back up to the required standard for aircraft operations. While the main snow fleet are concentrating on the taxiways and runway, two smaller Kubota tractors will be busy

clearing the snow from the airside roads and the aircraft parking stands. Training All airside operations personnel are trained to a high standard to operate the airport snow equipment, and for us training starts at the beginning of September when our first tractor, plough and de-icer return for the winter season. At Southampton Airport the Airside Operation department is prepared and ready every single year so we can keep the airport open and continue to breeze our passengers through.

“Every snowfall the team at Southampton clears more than 385 tonnes of snow – that’s about three-and-a-half times as heavy as a Blue Whale or about four-and-a-half times as heavy as an Airbus A320!” www.southamptonairport.com

Set in the charming historic Marktplatz and overlooked by the Renaissance town hall, the annual market opens its “gingerbread houses”. Underneath a sky of festive lights, you’ll find trinkets, local crafts and gifts a plenty and where you can ice-skate in Düsseldorf’s very own winter landscape. The Christmas market will stretch across the square as craftsmen and women demonstrate their skills and offer their wares. The hut facades on Flinger Strasse will be modelled on Düsseldorf’s old townhouses to create a unique harmonious ensemble and see the dream setting of crystals and sparkling stars that make up “Sternchenmarkt” (“Little Star Market”) at Stadtbrückchen. You’ll also want to make sure you warm yourselves up at the traditional mulled-wine pyramid located on Heinrich-Heine-Platz. Visitors to the new “Christmas Market at the Kö-Bogen” will be able to enjoy the sight of traditional wooden huts set against modern architecture and a panoramic view of Hofgarten. As well as buying from the huge choice of stalls, you’ll also be able enjoy crafts, snacks and beverages, not to mention the merry-go-round at Schadowstraße that the kids will love! Mont Blanc

GENEVA

The sleek, slick and cosmopolitan Swiss city of Geneva is a great gateway to the Swiss ski resorts along with many resorts in the French Alps. Offering plenty of variety from quiet smaller, undiscovered gems of the Alps to large bustling ski resorts including the internationally known Chamonix, Les Gets and Flaine, all overlooked by Mont Blanc – the highest mountain in Western Europe. As you Breeze through Southampton Airport you can enjoy a flight to Geneva in just over two hours, making it perfect for a last minute ski weekend or longer stay. The sheer number of ski resorts near the airport means you can be on the slopes within a few hours of leaving your flight from Southampton.

18

The mountains offer a good selection of restaurants, bars and cafés. So once you’ve reached the summit, cosy up on a terrace or balcony and watch the alpine life go by with a hot chocolate (or something stronger) before flying down the slopes yourself. If you fancy treating your legs to a rest, travel across the Switzerland-France border and ride a cable car to the summit of Aiguille du Midi for an incredible Alpine panorama — the views will take your breath away. If you’re tempted to put down the skis for a couple of hours and try something different, there are plenty of alternative activities to try your hand at, from thrill-seeking adventures to relaxing tours. Discover the joys of the snowmobile on a 20km guided adventure or take a trip up Glacier 3000, one of the most famous glaciers in Switzerland.

At the top discover panoramic views and numerous activities including a snow park, dog sled rides, and the highest bobsleigh track in the world! The resort of Avoriaz offers a ski-in/skiout, fully pedestrianised town, which makes it a fantastic resort for families to base themselves. The charming Italian resort of Courmayeur offers a good selection of bars, apres-ski clubs and restaurants, making it perfect for couples to enjoy their ski retreat.
