WELCOME

to the BREEZE SPRING edition

When it seems like cold and gloomy days are dragging on, Southampton Airport’s got you covered with exciting summer destinations. I am very pleased with our range of sun holidays this year, our passengers are really taking up the opportunity to book on our most favourite routes to Spain with Volotea, and the seven new exotic routes with FlyLolo. I am pleased to say that 2018 has been a very successful year for us, and we welcomed more than two million passengers. To mark a strong start to 2019 we have just been named the UK Regional Airport of the Year by International Travel News – a true testimony to the outstanding service that we provide for our passengers! It’s been great to see the level of support that the airport has in the local community – this has been demonstrated by the high level of positive responses received to our development plans. We are preparing a planning application to extend our runway, providing more choice and more connections for our passengers in 2020. Geneva route is still going strong with a lot of people taking advantage of the mostanticipated EasyJet service that takes you to the best snowy slopes of Europe in just under three hours. And of course we are looking forward to working with Connect Airways, a consortium founded by Virgin Group and Stobart Aviation that has now acquired Flybe. This is another exciting development that we hope will support our growth ambitions in the years ahead. So whether you are getting ready to ski in the Alps or all set to travel for business, Southampton Airport is waiting to extend a warm welcome. We’re proud to be your Airport of Choice.

STAFF AT THE AIRPORT WHO TRAVEL THE EXTRA MILE

STEVEN THURSTON

Walk The Floor With… Steven Thurston, Head of Planning and Development What does your daily job involve? The main focus of my role at Southampton Airport is leading on the strategic planning of the airport and coordinating the programme of infrastructure changes outlined in the recent airport Master Plan. At present my focus is split between leading the runway extension design and planning approval teams and I’m also understanding how the Terminal expansion can be phased alongside the forecasted passenger growth. What is your favourite part of what you do? The variation of what I can cover in a day is both exciting and challenging. Over the period of a day I could have met with designers talking about the runway, discussed planning with a local councillor, met with an ecologist to ensure we don’t impact on any protected species and discussed removing tree obstacles in an area of local woodland I recently led on purchasing for the airport! How long have you been with Southampton Airport? I joined the airport in 2005 having previously worked in a similar role at Heathrow Airport. What training did you have to go through before you could do this job? I have attended courses on airport planning and project management but the majority of my experience has come from my time in the aviation business, working on projects right across every aspect of aviation and numerous airports. What made you decide to work in aviation/at the airport? My first aviation experience was working for British Airways World Cargo travelling around the world setting up new cargo bases. With no particular aviation interest I quickly became more involved in airport business projects and after deciding to leave BA the first job I was approached for was working for BAA at Heathrow Airport! 27 years later I’m still in the aviation business! What do you like about working at Southampton Airport? As part of the airports leadership team I’m able to help shape and influence all parts of the business and due to the airport size I get involved in all aspects of the operation, I’ve even been known to drive the snow plough! What has been the highlight of your time working here? I wouldn’t say there’s been one thing as I have been involved in so many changes helping shape the airport to what it is today. I suspect the future opening of the runway extension will top everything. What is your favourite aircraft? Although it’s great every winter to see the EasyJet A320 arrive I still love hearing the sound from the Spitfires and Lancaster when they visit the airport. What is your favourite destination from Southampton Airport? Perpignan, can’t beat the weather! What is your favourite thing to do outside of work? For years my main passions have been ocean sailing and rugby, not sure they go that well together, but more recently I’ve become involved in endurance running and have taken part in various events like nonstop double marathons along the South Downs. Basically anything that gets me active outside.

BREEZE AWARD

WINNERS GEMMA FORMAN, ADM Gemma went above and beyond on her late Airport Duty Manager shift in September, stopping to notice a young family travelling struggling in the Terminal. Never one to shy away from having fun, Gemma was praised for her “caring, considerate and friendly nature” while busy entertaining the children, interacting with pilots and in turn giving Mum the time to relax. ALAN HOWE, SWISSPORT PRM Alan’s superb special assistance got nominated by the Swissport Station Manager, especially after one grateful family took the trouble to write in and thank him for his care and patience while assisting their daughter on a recent trip to Amsterdam. Nothing was too much trouble and all in a day’s work for Alan as he “completely understood the needs of the whole family”. What a fantastic endorsement of his hard work!

Laid-back way of Life!

When to go... Amsterdam is a city for all seasons. Come wind, rain, snow or shine, there’s always something to do and see. Spring is unquestionably the most beautiful time of year to visit Amsterdam. The annual carpet of richly coloured tulips burst into bloom and the lush, tree-lined canal banks welcome every visitor. Whilst the city’s flora paints a colourful canvas, nothing beats a trip to Holland’s world famous flower strip or bollenstreek so head to Keukenhof Gardens between March and May for the best blooms. During the summer months you’ll be spoilt for choice with music events, foodie festivals and cultural carnivals. Of the 300 festivals that take place around the city each year you’ll find the majority happen in the summer months.

Why go… If the culture, history, arts, and beauty were not enough to sway you, then time your visit with one of the spectacular events that happen throughout the year. If you love tradition you’ll love National Mills Day from the 11 - 12 May, a day when as many mills as possible are running with events taking place around them. For music lovers the summer Roots Festival in July offers a wide range of global music and non-western culture. And in early June, the biggest performing arts festival in the Netherlands, Holland Festival, takes place with music, theatre and dance.

Hampshire FOCUS Hampshire, home to Southampton Airport, has an exciting 2019 ahead. With world-renowned events, exciting key milestones, and new developments that will give you plenty of reasons to visit and stay in this picturesque county.

Events and Festivals Big news for the county as the ICC Cricket World Cup returns to Hampshire for the first time in 20 years, with five fixtures at The Ageas Bowl between Wednesday 5 June and Monday 24 June. The popular Hampshire Food Festival takes place throughout July, a wonderful month-long, countywide programme of events celebrating the best of local food and farming. You’ll also find the UK’s longest running festival of outdoor arts when Winchester Hat Fair returns from the 5 - 7 July in the centre of the historic city of Winchester.

New developments

Something to celebrate There are some milestone anniversaries in Hampshire in 2019 and some serious celebrations to go alongside. Exbury Gardens will be celebrating their centenary of when the Rothschild family bought the property and started the gardens with an unveiling of a new ‘secret’ garden. To mark the 500th anniversary of the death of Leonardo da Vinci, 144 of the Renaissance master’s drawings in the Royal Collection will go on display in 12 simultaneous exhibitions across the UK, including Southampton Art Gallery. Beaulieu National Museum also celebrates 50 years of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang with a special exhibition featuring Coggin’s Garage, technical drawings and original costumes and props.

Southampton is set to welcome a new multimillion luxury hotel in Spring 2019. Hotel giant Marriott is behind the scheme to build the eightstorey, 208-bedroom building, near Westquay. In early 2019 Southampton can look forward to the reopening of the cornerstone of it’s medieval defensive wall, God’s House Tower. After refurbishments, the subsequent exhibition and events program will culturally reanimate this important local monument
