Ingredients:
1/3 cup red onion, finely chopped
3 tablespoons mayonnaise
2 tablespoons fresh cilantro, finely chopped
3 teaspoons fresh squeezed lime juice
1/2 teaspoon ground cumin
1/2 teaspoon lime zest
8 ounces jumbo lump blue crabmeat, picked over for shells
1 large ripe avocado, halved, pitted, peeled
Directions:
Mix together red onion, mayonnaise, cilantro, lime juice, cumin and lime zest in medium sized mixing bowl.
Gently mix in crabmeat. Season salad with salt and pepper.
Drizzle avocado halves with remaining 1 teaspoon lime juice to prevent discoloration and season with salt and pepper. Arrange avocado halves, cut side up, on plates.
Fill tops of avocado with crab salad. Garnish salad with lime wedges.

Modernizing Marine Propulsion Without Replacing the Vessel
AMaryland startup is developing a removable electric waterjet platform intended to give useful commercial vessels a practical path toward cleaner propulsion.
Across working waterfronts, many commercial vessels remain structurally sound, dependable, and well suited to the jobs they perform. Yet the propulsion systems inside them are aging, costly to maintain, and increasingly difficult to reconcile with the marine industry’s movement toward cleaner operation. Replacing an entire vessel may solve the propulsion problem, but it can also create a much larger financial and operational burden for owners whose hulls still have years of useful service remaining.
Aqua Leaf Technology LLC, a Maryland-based marine innovation company, is developing AQ2-R around a different question: why replace an entire vessel when it is the propulsion system that needs to evolve? AQ2-R is a patent-pending removable electric waterjet propulsion retrofit platform intended initially for compatible commercial workboats and similar vessels. The first prototype program is centered on a 100 kW-class electric propulsion concept. Rather than treating propulsion as a permanent installation that is difficult to access, the system is being developed around a removable module connected to the vessel through a dedicated Vessel Docking Structure.
The long-term objective is to allow the propulsion module to be removed for service, replacement, or future upgrades while the vessel remains afloat whenever practical. That docksideservice philosophy is central to the project. Conventional propulsion repairs can involve extensive dismantling, shipyard scheduling, or dry-docking. AQ2-R is intended to reduce that disruption by making the propulsion unit itself modular. The removable module is intended to integrate the electric motor and waterjet propulsion assembly. The vessel’s Battery System, power electronics, charging equipment, controls, cooling, and safety-management functions would remain vessel-specific systems. This approach is meant to support maintenance access and future component upgrades while recognizing that each installation will require qualified engineering and compatibility review.
Aqua Leaf Technology’s broader vision is not limited to one pod. The company is developing AQ2-R as the foundation of a larger retrofit ecosystem that could eventually support different vessel classes, duty cycles, power requirements, and operating environments.

Crystal River 2026 Scallop Season
The 2026 bay scallop season is off to a fantastic start in Crystal River and Homosassa, and despite the heavy boat traffic over the busy July 4th holiday weekend, there are still plenty of scallops waiting to be found.
Reports from local captains and recreational scallopers indicate healthy numbers of scallops throughout the grass flats, with many crews continuing to limit out while spending less time searching than expected. Water clarity has remained favorable across much of the area, allowing snorkelers to easily spot scallops nestled in the seagrass.
While the holiday brought crowded boat ramps and busy waterways, the scallop population has held up well. Anglers and families heading out this week are finding productive areas throughout both Crystal River and Homosassa, proving that the season is still in excellent shape.
The best action continues to be in 4 to 8 feet of water over healthy seagrass beds. Early morning trips are providing calmer conditions, better visibility, and lighter boat traffic, making for an enjoyable day on the water.
As always, harvesters should remember the current regulations for Citrus County, including a daily limit of two
gallons of whole bay scallops in the shell (or one pint of meat) per person, with a maximum vessel limit of ten gallons in the shell or four pints of meat. The season remains open through September 24. If you’ve been waiting for the holiday crowds to clear before planning your trip, now is an excellent time to head to the Nature Coast. The scallops are plentiful, the water is warm, and the 2026 season is shaping up to be one of the better starts in recent years.

The late summer bite is in full swing here in Crystal River, Florida, offering a thrilling mix of heavy-hitting inshore species and excellent scalloping opportunities. Whether you are hunting giant redfish on the flats or gathering dinner in the grass flats, right now is

Every August, anglers around Tampa Bay seem to ask the same question: where did the fish go? There’s no doubt the bite gets tougher this time of year, but the answer is rarely one thing. Heat, rain, changing salinity and scattered bait all play a part in the summertime blues.
Some years August stays dry, water temperatures climb into the upper 80s and even over 90 degrees, and fish slide into deeper, cooler water or bury themselves in the shade of mangroves, docks and bridges. Other years, heavy afternoon rains push too much freshwater into the bay, dropping salinity and moving bait and game fish out of their normal patterns. When the greenbacks disappear from the flats, it can feel like the fish disappeared with them.
This year has been rough on baitfish, especially greenbacks. They showed up as expected in March, but by midMay many of the flats were already thin. If you worked hard and put in the time, you might have caught enough to fish with. On several trips, I still had to buy shrimp as backup, and that is not a bad plan for August.
Assuming this August follows the usual summer pattern, the key is to adjust. Fish cooler
periods, target moving water, and look for shade, structure and lights. Here are a few ways to improve your chances:
• Fish early and be in position at daybreak. Artificial lures can help you start casting right away along mangroves, points and potholes before the sun gets high.
• If you can, catch greenbacks the day before and keep them in a bait motel. This works well if your boat stays at a marina or if you live on the water.
• Try fishing at night around dock lights and bridge lights. Shrimp work great after dark, and the coolerwater makes it easier on both the angler and the fish.
• Change tactics this month and spend some time along the edges of the Tampa Bay shipping channel. Mangrove snapper, gag grouper, Key West grunts, sea bass and cobia can all be found around deeper structure and hard bottom.
• Pompano, sheepshead, black drum, tarpon and trout are all possible around the Howard Frankland, Gandy and Sunshine Skyway bridges, especially when there is good current.
This month I plan to do most of my fishing at night around docks with underwater lights,because those lights draw bait and, in turn, better fish. If you have greenbacks,use them, but medium to large shrimp will often
prime time to be on the water.
Big Redfish: Massive redfish are schooling up on the shallow flats and around mangrove keys as they prepare for their fall spawn. Target them during high tide using cut mullet, live pinfish, or gold spoons.
Trout Heating Up: Speckled trout fishing is getting better by the day. Large, mature female trout are showing up in deeper potholes and along the outer keys, aggressively striking topwater lures early in the morning and live shrimp under popping corks

A 1/0 hook, 30-pound fluorocarbon leader and 20-pound braided linegive me enough strength to turn a fish before it gets under the dock. Even with the right tackle, expect to lose a few.
Bridge fishing at night is a different game, and your tackle needs to be a little heavier because you never know what is lurking in the dark water under Tampa Bay’s bridges. Over the years I have caught tarpon, black drum, trout and some big redfish there. For trout and tarpon, use lighter spinning tackleand let a live bait drift naturally from the dark side into the light. For bottom fishing,step up to medium tackle with alarger spinning outfit or conventional reel, at least 30-pound line and a 40-pound leader. Fresh cut blue crab is hard for black drum to refuse, and live threadfins are excellent for tarpon. Position the boat up-current and under the bridgeso your baits drift back to the pilings. With light tackle, let the bait slide past the shadow line into the light where trout and tarpon are feeding.

A Blessed Day at the Boils: Pompano, Drum, and Dolphins Nearshore
On Saturday, Tania and I hosted my friend Joe for a nearshore fishing trip. With a forecast of 5kt SE winds and 2-3 ft seas, it was shaping up to be a good day. The intel I received was that the bottom was cold and bottom fish were scarce, so I decided to head to one of my go-to spots, the Boils. I told Joe to show up at the dock between 6:30 and 7 am.
Tania and I left home around 5:50 am to make sure we beat Joe to the dock. On the drive, we began the day with our daily prayer, asking for His blessing of protection, open eyes, and a bountiful catch. We arrived at the Fishing Center shortly after our prayer and were fortunate they had shrimp, since we’re in the time of year when shrimp are hard to come by.
We made it to the dock about 6:25 am. Tania and I loaded the boat and got everything ready for Joe. He arrived shortly after we were set to go, and we left the dock near 7 am, making our way toward the Boils. Once we cleared the inlet, we noticed a massive weed line just off the beach. We pulled up to investigate and see if any fish were holding under it, but unfortunately, we didn’t spot any.
At that point, we continued on to the Boils, with weeds all the way. I was a little concerned they’d make fishing tough, but once we arrived, the weeds let up enough to make it workable.
We started drifting near the East buoy, hoping the permit would be biting. Unfortunately, nothing was. We ended up drifting from the East
buoy all the way to the west end of the Boils, with very few bites and even fewer fish. Joe did catch the first fish of the day, a blue runner, but that was all we had to show for the first hour.
By then, I was looking around and not seeing much life — barely any wind, and it felt like slack tide since we were hardly drifting at all. Between the lack of signs of life and the lack of fish, I brought up heading to one of the reefs five miles offshore, but Tania suggested we work our way back toward the buoy one more time before making that call. That turned out to be the right move. The tide had started moving by then, and the fish started biting right along with it.
On the first drift back, Joe caught a juvenile African pompano. Tania was a little disappointed since that’s one of her bucket list fish, but since it was small, she figured the one she eventually catches will be bigger. We ended up staying in that area for another few hours, drifting and catching fish steadily. Highlights included a 24-inch black drum and two of the largest grunts I’ve ever seen, 14 and 15 inches respectively. Along with the fish, we had a few large sea turtles surface within 10 feet of the boat, and some dolphins swam past as well. We always love seeing these wonderful, beautiful sea creatures.
Once the bite slowed down, we started heading back to the dock, with a plan to stop at our Margate spot along the way. That decision paid off too — we caught a bunch more fish there, ending the day on a high note.
About noon, we decided to head in for good, as the weather looked like it was
moving in — the sky was darkening on both sides of us. Once again, our timing was perfect. As we pulled into the marina, it started to sprinkle. The good Lord blessed us one last time by holding the rain off until we’d finished up and were driving home. All in all, it was a great day on the water with great company. We caught fish, saw dolphins and turtles, and beat the rain. Tania and I send our best wishes to all our fellow anglers. August brings the heat and stellar rod bending action. The kids are back to school, The water has less traffic and pressure, making for great fishing.
Snook fanatics, the line insiders are abundant along beaches, passes, docks, sea walls, and mangrove shorelines. Working these areas with live bait, rapala x raps and DOA 3 “ shad tail gets the strike. Snook can be sight fished at times making for spectacular hook ups as anglers witness the strikes.
Tarpon a.k.a. Silver King are an angler‘s favorite as they always put on a show. These acrobatic fish are willing to take live baits free lined with the tide or Doa terror eyz worked in their vicinity. Tarpon offer great drag screaming runs bringing smiles and excitement to anglers engaged in battle. Tarpon can be found roaming beach shorelines, deep passes, sea walls and mangrove shorelines.
Anglers looking for a good variety of species to target the local waters, offer snapper, jacks, mackerel, drum, blue fish, and plenty of sharks. Sharks are always a favorite for anglers as they put up a great fight, and people are fascinated with
these toothy dinosaurs.

With Florida leading the nation in both registered recreational vessels and boating-related accidents, boating safety education has never been more important.
To better serve the community, Flotilla 11-1 Clearwater offers the Boat America Safe Boating Course both in person in Clearwater and virtually via Zoom. These flexible learning options make it easier for boaters to meet Florida’s education requirements while accessing life-saving information.

The BoatUS Foundation for Boating Safety and Clean Water has launched the only free interactive boating safety course for Florida recreational boaters. The course, which is approved by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission and meets state boating safety education requirements, can be taken at the student’s own pace. After passing the exam, they can print their own certificate of completion for immediate use and will receive a lifetime card from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.The course provides video demonstrations and sample common boating situations for students to interact with to better understand how to evaluate real-world instances. The learning experience includes storylines where the student “boats” to various places and includes interactive learning tools like flashcards and drag-and-drop features to enhance learning and retention. Course-takers will be able to design and name the virtual boat that takes them through the course and map how far they’ve “traveled” within it. In the state of Florida, anyone born on or after January 1, 1988, who operates a vessel powered by 10 horsepower or more must pass an approved boating safety course and have in his/her
possession photographic identification and proof of boating safety education completion issued by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. The online BoatUS Foundation boating safety course and exam are approved by the National Association of State Boating Law Administrators (NASBLA) and recognized by the U.S. Coast Guard as exceeding the minimum requirements for the National Recreational Boating Safety Program. “NASBLA approval of our Florida Boating Safety Course is a meaningful investment in boater safety, said Lynne O’Hearn, Program Manager at BoatUS Foundation. “Boater education is one of the most effective ways to prevent accidents, and this course gives Florida boaters the opportunity to build their skills to better enjoy Florida waterways safely.”

UNITED STATES COAST GUARD FLOTILLA 7-16 OFFERS SAFE BOATING CLASSES IN GULFPORT, FL, MEETS THE THIRD WEDNESDAY OF EACH MONTH. These classes qualify the attendee for the FWC Safe Boating Card. This card is required for most people born after January 1, 1988 to legally operate a power boat with greater than 10hp motor in Florida. The one-day class includes instruction on safety equipment, boat handling, rules of the road, navigation aids, communications, trailering, legal requirements and others. Power and sailboats are covered, as well as personal watercraft. Of course, besides making a boater in compliance, the main goal of the class is to create a safer boater. Classes are offered on the second Saturday of each month. To sign up, contact Marty Richardson at (630) 674-5352. Flotilla 7-16 also performs free courtesy vessel safety inspections for power and sail boats, personal watercraft, and paddle craft. The inspector will come to your location, inspect the required safety features of your vessel, and if you pass will provide a safety sticker to mount on your vessel. But the vessel owner then knows of any deficiencies to correct before having an accident or being sanctioned by the Coast Guard. A VESSEL SAFETY CHECK - STUART - Despite numerous COVID-19 restrictions, more and more boaters are taking to the water to alleviate at-home boredom while taking advantage of the open-air benefits and more pandemicfree aspects of recreational boating. But if you haven’t been out boating in a while, are your vessel’s lights operating properly? Do you have a sufficient number of life jackets for the number of passengers aboard? Is your engine’s ventilation system up to par? To get you started on a new year boating adventure, now may be a perfect time to consider getting a 2025 Vessel Safety Check (VSC) offered by certified VSC examiners from the St. Lucie River Power Squadron, also known as America’s Boating Club of Martin County. These trained VSC examiners from the local squadron will point out safety features such as minimum requirements required by the U.S. Coast Guard, examine fundamental mechanical aspects of your vessel, and answer questions how you can have more fun safely on the water. These are just a few of the many discussion points covered in this voluntary examination. As an added plus, Vessel Safety Checks are free to boat owners. And if you don’t “pass muster” with the thorough examination, the summary report is yours and yours alone.
