Unlike standard sailboats that rely on a single hull and a heavy keel for balance, a trimaran boat has three separate hulls. With three hulls, this sailboat offers sailors a unique blend of speed, stability, and safety.
So, whether you’re seeking a cruising trimaran or a highperformance racer, we’ll explain why this three-hulled design is special.
What Is a Trimaran with Three Hulls?
A trimaran is a multihull vessel consisting of a central hull and two smaller outer hulls—also known as “amas” or “floats”— attached by lateral beams called akas. This design offers a wide beam, creating massive natural stability without the need for a heavy, deep lead keel.
Because they have a minimal surface area to drag through the water, these vessels are among the fastest types of boats available today. Unlike monohulls, which must push a heavy ballast through the water, the trimaran stays light. This allows it to “plane” or skim across the surface with far less effort.
How Does a Modern Sailing Trimaran Work?
The magic of the trimaran is found in its unique design and its interaction with the elements.
• The Central Hull: This is the center hull where the main living space, mast, and cockpit are usually located.
• The Outer Hulls (Amas): The outer hulls provide the “righting moment.” As the wind pushes the sails, the boat leans slightly onto one of the outriggers. This provides the buoyancy needed to keep the boat upright.
• Stability: Because the boat is so wide, it’s significantly less likely to capsize than a monohull. These boats are famous for
their outstanding stability, speed, and minimized air drag.
• Speed and Apparent Wind: These vessels have a unique relationship with apparent wind. Because they move so fast, they actually create their own wind over the sails. That allows them to accelerate even further, often sailing faster than the actual wind speed.
What Are Some Common Uses for Trimarans?
• Day Sailing: Many smaller models, especially folding trimarans, are perfect for quick afternoon outings. Their stability offers a safe platform for families, and their ease of handling delivers an engaging sailing experience.
• Coastal Cruising: A cruising trimaran is an excellent choice for island hopping. Their shallow draft allows sailors to navigate into tucked-away coves and beaches that monohulls and catamarans with deep keels can’t reach.
• Offshore Performance Sailing: Specialized trimarans are built for high-speed ocean navigation. Plus, their ability to handle heavy weather and maintain high-average speeds makes them an excellent option for long-distance racing.
What Are the Pros and Cons of a Trimaran Boat?
Advantages of Trimarans
• Speed: Trimarans are generally faster than both monohulls and catamarans of an equivalent size.
• Stability: They remain very flat while sailing, making for a more comfortable living space for those prone to seasickness.
• Shallow Draft: The lack of a deep keel means you can explore shallow reefs or beach the boat for a picnic.
• Folding Options: Many modern sailing designs allow the outer hulls to pull inward. That means the boat can fit into a standard marina slip or be pulled out of the water on a trailer.
Disadvantages of Trimarans
Docking Space: Unless it is a folding trimaran, the wide beam makes finding a marina slip difficult and expensive.
Interior Volume: Compared to a catamaran, which can have cabins in both hulls, a trimaran’s living space is mainly restricted to the narrow central hull.
Price Point: The complexity of the hulls and the high-strength beams often results in a higher price than a standard monohull. How to Sail a Trimaran
Learning how to sail a trimaran is an exciting shift for those used to single-hull boats. Because of their design, they behave differently in terms of physics and feel:
• Handling and Responsiveness: They’re incredibly light and turn quickly because they lack the drag of a massive lead keel.
• Stability Management: Unlike a monohull that heels over to “bleed off” wind pressure, a trimaran stays flat. That means the sailor must be more proactive with the mainsheet in gusty conditions.
• Apparent Wind Mastery: As the boat accelerates, the wind direction you feel shifts toward the bow. That requires ongoing sail-trim modifications to uphold performance.
• Tactile Feedback: Sailors must rely on the boat’s speed and the pressure felt in the helm rather than the angle of the deck to judge when it is time to shorten sail.
Additional Considerations
The benefits of this boat differ from those of a monohull. First and foremost, the configuration provides excellent stability and allows for little heel. And the use of a tiller extension gives the helmsman greater leverage and control—especially when making quick adjustments in changing wind conditions.
Modern options typically feature innovative rigging systems that simplify sail handling (even for smaller crews). However, it’s important to note that the wide beam and unique design mean docking requires skill and slip fees can be higher due to the larger space required.
Spice Crusted Florida Tuna with Orange Horseradish Sauce

Preparation:
Preheat a large sauté pan over medium–high heat and add 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil. Generously season all sides of the tuna loin with the seafood seasoning and carefully place into pan. Sear the tuna loin on all sides for no longer than 30 seconds on each side. The goal is to have a hard crispy sear on the outside and rare on the inside. Carefully remove the tuna from the pan and place on a plate with a paper towel and let rest in the refrigerator for 30 minutes before slicing. To make the sauce, combine the marmalade, horseradish and parsley in a small mixing bowl. Mix ingredients thoroughly then taste and adjust seasoning with salt and pepper. Once the seared tuna has cooled and rested, use a sharp knife to slice the tuna into bite-size portions. Display the sliced tuna on a chilled platter and serve with the horseradish sauce.

Tarpon will still be a good option this month. Catch and release night snook fishing in the ICW or in the surf should also be good options. With water temperatures pushing 90 degrees, shallow water action for reds and big trout will be best early in the day.
Tarpon fishing should be good in the coastal gulf in July, which is my favorite month to fly fish for tarpon. Large schools of tarpon will dwindle in size and numbers to singles, doubles and small schools of mostly post spawn fish. With spawning completed and after a long migration, I find tarpon to be aggressive and curious in July. The tactics are the same as earlier in the season, anchoring or staking out on travel routes, although fish are in a better mood. Unlike the large tarpon schools that we see around full and new moon phases in June, July fish are usually more aggressive. Large schools of tarpon are impressive, but if you spook the lead fish you will spook all of them. Smaller baitfish, shrimp and crab patterns seem to work well late in the season.
Tarpon will thin out towards the end of the month as they begin to move to inside waters of Sarasota Bay, Tampa Bay and Charlotte Harbor. They move into these areas to rest and feed following spawning where they can be targeted in these areas with flies. Also look for tarpon feeding in schools of “breaking” ladyfish in these areas. I have done well fishing inside areas late in the season with wide profile flies, such as Lefty’s Deceiver or EP flies. When tarpon show up to feed in ladyfish schools, cast to feeding tarpon and strip the fly very slowly to present a large profile to fish cruising the edges of the school and to avoid ladyfish bites.

fishing will be a good option this month. With very warm water this time of year, it is important to use tackle heavy enough to land them quickly. Fly anglers should do well with clear intermediate sink tip lines and wider profile flies, such as Lefty’s Deceiver or EP flies, since larger baitfish may be more predominant. Docks and bridges close to passes should be the best ones. You’ll also find snook in the surf, where you can walk along the beach and sight cast to them in shallow water. The same flies that work at night usually also work in the surf, although be observant of the size baits that are present in the area you are fishing so you can “match the hatch”. Gibby’s DT Variation is a “go to” fly for many snook surf anglers.
Reds should be very active in shallow water this month. With plentiful baitfish and higher tides, they should spend more time feeding over shallow grass flats. Look for them along the edges of bars or in potholes when the tide is low or along mangrove shorelines and around oyster bars when the tide is high. You’ll also find big trout in many of the same areas where you find reds, but the bite for big trout is usually best early or late in the day. I tie my Grassett Flats Minnow in a larger size this time of year to match the size and profile of pilchards or pinfish that are plentiful. Fly poppers and Gurglers may draw some big explosions! In my opinion it’s important to protect larger trout, which are usually female breeders.
I like to drift deep grass flats and cast ahead of my drift with weighted flies on sink tip fly lines to find fish. Diving birds or baitfish “dimpling” on the surface are signs that predators may be present. A drift anchor

July is one of the best times of the year to book a Naples fishing charter or Marco Island fishing charter, with consistent action and a wide variety of fish available throughout Southwest Florida.
While many anglers think the excitement ends when peak tarpon season winds down, experienced local captains know that’s when Southwest Florida’s incredible variety really shines. July offers outstanding opportunities to catch multiple species in a single trip, making it one of my favorite months to guide families, experienced anglers, and first-time fishermen alike.
The summer rains have cooled the water just enough to get fish actively feeding, baitfish are abundant throughout the area, and the backcountry, mangrove shorelines,
beaches, passes, and nearshore waters are all producing quality catches. Whether you’re interested in Naples backcountry fishing, Marco Island inshore fishing, or exploring the beautiful waters of the Ten Thousand Islands and Everglades National Park, July offers outstanding fishing with very little boat traffic during the early morning hours.
One of the best parts about July is the incredible variety of species available. On many trips, it’s common to catch six to ten different species before returning to the dock.
Snook Fishing Continues to Improve.
Snook remains one of the primary targets throughout July. Schools continue to feed aggressively around mangrove shorelines, creek mouths, docks, bridges, and passes where moving water concentrates bait.
Early morning and late afternoon are typically the most productive times, although cloudy days often produce excellent action throughout the day. Live pilchards, threadfin herring, pinfish, and shrimp all work well,

will slow your drift to a more manageable speed if it’s windy. You may find Spanish mackerel, blues or pompano mixed with trout on deep grass flats. You’ll need to add 6” of 60-pound fluorocarbon to your leader when toothy fish are in the mix.
In addition to tarpon, you might find false albacore (little tunny), tripletail or cobia in the coastal gulf this month. Look for albies feeding on the surface. I have seen large schools of albies “blitz” the beach while tarpon fishing this time of year. They are usually feeding on larger baits, such as threadfins or pilchards. You might find cobia swimming with tarpon or cruising bars in shallow water along the beach. You can use your tarpon fly tackle for cobia, but an 8 to 9-weight fly rod will be better suited for mackerel and albies. I also occasionally run into tripletail in July, either around a crab trap float, buoy or floating debris.
There are lots of options this month, late season tarpon, snook in the surf or at night or fishing skinny water for reds or big trout. Tarpon fishing is usually best when sweat is pouring down your back, but you’ll want to fish early in the day in inside waters. Our natural resources are under constant pressure from red tides fueled by industrial, agricultural and residential runoff, toxic spills and discharges, freezes, increasing fishing pressure and habitat loss and degradation, please limit your kill, don’t kill your limit!

Summer Lake Toho Fishing report
The summer heat is here and the bass fishing on Orlando’s Lake Toho is heating up with it! The cooler morning bite has been the deal, as it always is at this time of year. Our captains have been averaging around 15-25 bass on our morning 4 hour charters. With bigger bass becoming more prevalent again like the 9 pound 11 ounce and 7 pounder pictured above caught with our captain Jay!
With the heat we typically get at this time of year, the bulk of the bass and especially the bigger bass are pushed off shore in the deeper grass beds and brush piles. There isn’t as much submerged grass on the lake as we’ve had in previous years so wherever there is submerged hydrilla and eel grass there’s pretty much guaranteed fish on it.
The best bite as always, has been on wild shiners. That’s what the bulk of the larger bass are coming off of right now. But for artificials, zoom speedworms reeled over top of the grass
and zoom flukes twitched over it have been what the bulk of the bite has been on. Chatterbaits have been working also, but only on cloudy, windier days, along with jerkbaits.
It has been a great start to the summer so far for us and with the consistent weather we get at this time of year, the great bass fishing should continue for the rest of the summer. So if you’re looking to fish Lake Toho, now is a great time to book. This also has been the busiest summer ever for us as a guide service so I would recommend booking your trip as early as possible to ensure we still have availibility.
3 Marlin in 3 Trips
We are now in the summer season and mahi fishing and swordfishing have been the focus. As many already know, there is a tremendous amount of sargasso weed in Florida. That is both good and bad for fishing. When the grass is concentrated in big mats and is spaced apart is what you want for fishing. If the grass is broken up and is everywhere, that makes it difficult to know where the fish are as well as keep you trolling spread clear and free of grass. As of right now its 50/50. Some days are clean and some days the grass is broken up and everywhere. For mahi fishing we have found lures that work well with the sargasso grass and don’t get constantly fouled up. When the sargasso grass is everywhere, it makes daytime swordfishing a lot of work. It’s doable but we are constantly clearing the tip rod of grass. Luckily it has not affected the sword bite and there are still plenty of swordfish being caught.
The one thing I have to mention in this report is the 3 marlin we caught on 3 consecutive trips. Catching marlin is Miami is not unheard of, and we usually catch a marlin once a year or so. This year we caught 3 marlins on 3 consecutive trips! That is unhear of. The first marlin we were trolling when one of our mahi lures got inhaled. The fish sounded
and after about 10 minutes started jumping. We could clearly see it was about an 80 lb. blue marlin. Luckly was only 80 pounds because we had hooked it on 20-pound test. We had hooked a 300-pound blue a month earlier, but that fish eventually frayed us off. This time we successfully got to the leader rand some great videos boatside. The next day we headed back offshore trolling for mahis. Looking out in the distance I can see some commotion near sargasso patch. That is usually a blue marlin feeing on mahis. As I approached the weed patch I can see a marlin swimming under the weeds. We trolled by it and no bites. I quickly spun the boat around and Billy fired out a live goggle eye on a 20lb spinning rod. The fish inhaled the bait, and it was game on. After close to an hour, we got the marlin next to the boat and realized it was a hatchet marlin. A hatchet marlin is often mistaken for a white marlin bit its dorsal fin seems to be cut off at the top thus the name Hatchet. There are other subtle differences that this fish also had. A few pictures and videos boatside and that fish was released as well. We then had a few days off, but on our very next trip we were trolling back in from ahi fishing and only had a couple of mahis. On the very same lure as our
first blue marlin, we have an explosive hit. I heard the outrigger line snap and looked back and saw a big boil in the water and the side of a big fish. This fish went down again but this time we had her on 30lb trolling gear with a heavier leader. After a few minutes the fish jumped, and it was an estimated 300-pound blue marlin. I was in shock; how can this be the third marlin in just three trips off of Miami. We all settled down and after about an hour we got this marlin boatside for some pictures and another release. Unbelievable is all I can say.
We are now getting into July and although the heat can be unbearing on land, there is always a slight breeze on the water and trolling for mahi is the perfect trip for all types of anglers. From the experienced to that entire families, mahi fishing is a staple in South Florida during the summer. Fow the more adventurous we also provide daytime swordfishing trips and on our very next trip after the third marlin we went daytime swordfishing and caught a decent 125-pound swordfish. Before summer runs out, look at your calendars and let’s book that trip!

AMERICA CLASSES - The U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla 11-1 Clearwater is pleased to offer the Boat America® Safe Boating Course to area boaters throughout 2026. With Florida leading the nation in both registered recreational vessels and boating-related accidents, boating safety education has never been more important.
To better serve the community, Flotilla 11-1 Clearwater offers the Boat America Safe Boating Course both in person in Clearwater and virtually via Zoom. These flexible learning options make it easier for boaters to meet Florida’s education requirements while accessing life-saving information.
Upon successful completion of the course, participants receive a Boating Safety Education ID Card issued by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC). This card is required for many operators and is often recognized by insurance companies for potential policy discounts.

COURSE - At-home learning helps Florida boaters prepare for the water easily and conveniently. The BoatUS Foundation for Boating Safety and Clean Water has launched the only free interactive boating safety course for Florida recreational boaters. The course, which is approved by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission and meets state boating safety education requirements, can be taken at the student’s own pace. After passing the exam, they can print their own certificate of completion for immediate use and will receive a lifetime card from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. The course provides video demonstrations and sample common boating situations for students to interact with to better understand how to evaluate real-world instances. The learning experience includes storylines where the student “boats” to various places and includes interactive learning tools like flashcards and drag-and-drop features to enhance learning and retention. Course-takers will be able to design and name the virtual boat that takes them through the course and map how far they’ve “traveled” within it. In the state of Florida, anyone born on or after January 1, 1988, who operates a vessel powered by 10 horsepower or more must pass an approved boating safety course and have in his/her possession photographic identification and proof of boating safety education completion issued by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. The online BoatUS Foundation boating safety course and exam are approved by the National Association of State Boating Law Administrators (NASBLA) and recognized by the U.S. Coast Guard as exceeding the minimum requirements for the National Recreational Boating Safety Program. “NASBLA approval of our Florida Boating Safety Course is a meaningful investment in boater safety, said Lynne O’Hearn, Program Manager at BoatUS Foundation. “Boater education is one of the most effective ways to prevent accidents, and this course gives Florida boaters the opportunity to build their skills to
better enjoy Florida waterways safely.”

UNITED STATES COAST GUARD FLOTILLA 7-16 OFFERS SAFE BOATING CLASSES IN GULFPORT, FL, MEETS THE THIRD WEDNESDAY OF EACH MONTH. These classes qualify the attendee for the FWC Safe Boating Card. This card is required for most people born after January 1, 1988 to legally operate a power boat with greater than 10hp motor in Florida. The one-day class includes instruction on safety equipment, boat handling, rules of the road, navigation aids, communications, trailering, legal requirements and others. Power and sailboats are covered, as well as personal watercraft. Of course, besides making a boater in compliance, the main goal of the class is to create a safer boater. Classes are offered on the second Saturday of each month. To sign up, contact Marty Richardson at (630) 674-5352. Flotilla 7-16 also performs free courtesy vessel safety inspections for power and sail boats, personal watercraft, and paddle craft. The inspector will come to your location, inspect the required safety features of your vessel, and if you pass will provide a safety sticker to mount on your vessel. But the vessel owner then knows of any deficiencies to correct before having an accident or being sanctioned by the Coast Guard. A VESSEL SAFETY CHECK - STUART -
Despite numerous COVID-19 restrictions, more and more boaters are taking to the water to alleviate at-home boredom while taking advantage of the open-air benefits and more pandemic-free aspects of recreational boating. But if you haven’t been out boating in a while, are your vessel’s lights operating properly? Do you have a sufficient number of life jackets for the number of passengers aboard? Is your engine’s ventilation system up to par? To get you started on a new year boating adventure, now may be a perfect time to consider getting a 2025 Vessel Safety Check (VSC) offered by certified VSC examiners from the St. Lucie River Power Squadron, also known as America’s Boating Club of Martin County. These trained VSC examiners from the local squadron will point out safety features such as minimum requirements required by the U.S. Coast Guard, examine fundamental mechanical aspects of your vessel, and answer questions how you can have more fun safely on the water. These are just a few of the many discussion points covered in this voluntary examination. As an added plus, Vessel Safety Checks are free to boat owners. And if you don’t “pass muster” with the thorough examination, the summary report is yours and yours alone.
