May 15-17 Tavernier, FL Keys - No Boat? No Problem! Inshore or Offshore!
TAVERNIER, FL - Casual anglers and fishing enthusiasts are invited to fish the LLGF Screamin’ Reels Tournament May 15-17 in Tavernier, FL. Hosted by the nonprofit Ladies Let’s Go Fishing Foundation, this unique, non-intimidating tournament welcomes anglers to compete for inshore or offshore species while learning valuable fishing skills in the Florida Keys.
The action-packed weekend kicks off on Friday with a presentation on fishing rules and conservation, plus a meet and greet with fundraisers from 6:30-8 pm at the Tavernier Elks Club.
On Saturday and Sunday, participants will take to the water in a friendly competition aboard private boats or guided charter boats. The 2026 event saw 110 fish hooked across inshore and offshore categories.
$1,000 in individual angler prizes include Penn combos, art prints, shirts and more. Awards include Top Offshore and Inshore Fish, Releases, Wild Card prizes and more.
LLGF Screamin’ Reels offers casual rules. For those without a boat, charter boat slots fill quickly – early registration is recommended. Registration of $95 early entry, $115 regular per adult angler and $55 for teens includes $20 in gifts and a chance to win tournament prizes.

Sheet Pan Florida Grouper Tacos with Cilantro Lime Slaw
Ingredients for the tacos:
• 1½ – 2 pounds grouper
• 2 cups Florida sweet peppers, sliced
• 1 Florida green bell pepper, sliced
• 1 tablespoon blackening seasoning or all-purpose seasoning
• 1 tablespoon neutral oil such as avocado oil, divided
• ½ teaspoon kosher salt
• Florida key limes and fresh cilantro, for serving
• Tortillas, radishes and queso fresco, for serving
Ingredients for the slaw:
• 2 cups Florida green cabbage, shredded
• 2 cups Florida purple cabbage, shredded
• ½ cup Florida cilantro, chopped
• 1 jalapeno, finely diced and seeds removed (for less heat, if desired)
• ¼ cup olive oil
• 2 tablespoons fresh lime juice
• 1 teaspoon lime zest
• 1 tablespoon Florida honey
• 1 teaspoon kosher salt, plus more, to taste
• ½ teaspoon ground cumin
Preparation for tacos: Preheat the oven to 425 degrees. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper, if desired.
Pat the fish dry and brush with ½ of the oil. Season the fillets evenly with the blackening or all-purpose seasoning and arrange on the prepared baking sheet. In a bowl, toss the sliced peppers with the remaining oil and kosher salt. Arrange the peppers around the fish in an even layer. Bake on the center rack for 10 to 12 minutes, or until the fish is tender, flakes easily with a fork and the peppers are slightly charred. Squeeze fresh Florida key lime juice over the fish and garnish with chopped cilantro. Serve with warm tortillas, sliced radishes and crumbled queso fresco.
Preparation for slaw: Add the shredded Florida green cabbage, Florida purple cabbage, chopped cilantro and diced jalapeño to a large bowl. Toss to combine. In a small bowl, whisk together the olive oil, fresh lime juice, lime zest, Florida honey, kosher salt and ground cumin until well combined. Pour the dressing over the mixture and toss until evenly coated. Taste and adjust seasoning as needed. Chill for 1 hour or until ready to serve. Fresh tip: Feel free to sauté fresh seasonal vegetables using same pan to make a complete meal.

Electric Speed Met Racing Heritage: Princeton University Tested Kilo Hydro at Mercury Racing’s Lake X
FOND DU LAC, Wis. — (March 23, 2026) — Mercury Racing hosted Princeton University’s Princeton Electric Speedboating (PES) team for a week of on-water testing at its legendary Lake X facility in Florida. The March test session brought Princeton’s cutting-edge electric hydroplane program to one of the most storied high-performance marine proving grounds in the world.
PES’s new custom hydro is named Eagle 1. The vessel is a 16.5 foot all-electric hydroplane designed and built by PES in conjunction with JW Myers from Black Sheep Racing. Underneath the carbon fiber decks spanning the entirety of the 7.5 foot wide vessel, the system consists of two battery modules; each rated at 356.4 V nominal (388.8 V maximum). Eagle 1 is equipped with a safety system that utilizes system status indicator lights for the high-voltage and low-voltage systems, emergency stops, a seven-point harness system, air tank, and a deployable airbag to ensure the safety of the driver and divers while testing at Lake X. The powertrain is designed to reach over 300 HP and sustain speeds upwards of 145 mph for up to one minute while driven by John Peeters. The test session with Mercury successfully represented the vessel’s first operations at these target speeds. The Electric Kilo Hydro represented a new generation of competitive hydroplane design, evolving from previous platforms with the integration
of advanced electric propulsion systems and a modified Mercury Racing SSM4 gearcase.
“Lake X has always been a place where new ideas are put to the test,” said Chris Jenks, Mercury Racing’s Development Engineering Manager. “Partnering with Princeton University on their Electric Kilo Hydro program was a great example of how academic innovation and high-performance marine engineering can come together. We were excited to provide a controlled environment where their team could gather meaningful data and continue pushing the boundaries of electric propulsion.”
“Testing at Lake X is a major milestone and honor for our program,” said Evan Callas, President of Princeton Electric Speedboating. “It gave us a rare opportunity to validate our electric propulsion system in a world-class environment while pushing performance limits and collecting critical data as we prepare for our next world record attempt later this year.
“Programs like this demonstrate how the future of marine performance will be shaped by collaboration,” Jenks added. “Whether it’s electric propulsion, new materials, or advanced control systems, bringing together university research and industry experience benefit everyone involved.”
Lake X provided a controlled environment with on-site safety, rescue and technical support, helping Princeton refine
data and prepare for its next record attempt.
Safety remained a priority, with protocols tailored for electric race boats and supported by experienced rescue divers Dakota James and Shawn Steinert, widely recognized for their work in U.S. Offshore racing events.
APBA President Kurt Romberg was also on-site, bringing additional expertise from his background in NASCAR aerodynamics and participated in a test session during the week.

AMERICA CLASSES - The U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla 11-1 Clearwater is pleased to offer the Boat America® Safe Boating Course to area boaters throughout 2026. With Florida leading the nation in both registered recreational vessels and boating-related accidents, boating safety education has never been more important.
To better serve the community, Flotilla 11-1 Clearwater offers the Boat America Safe Boating Course both in person in Clearwater and virtually via Zoom. These flexible learning options make it easier for boaters to meet Florida’s education requirements while accessing life-saving information.
Upon successful completion of the course, participants receive a Boating Safety Education ID Card issued by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC). This card is required for many operators and is often recognized by insurance companies for potential policy discounts.

FLORIDA BOATERS CAN NOW TAKE FREE STATE-APPROVED BOATING SAFETY
COURSE - At-home learning helps Florida boaters prepare for the water easily and conveniently. The BoatUS Foundation for Boating Safety and Clean Water has launched the only free interactive boating safety course for Florida recreational boaters. The course, which is approved by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission and meets state boating safety education requirements, can be taken at the student’s own pace. After passing the exam, they can print their own certificate of completion for immediate use and will receive a lifetime card from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.The course provides video demonstrations and sample common boating situations for students to interact with to better understand how to evaluate real-world instances. The learning experience includes storylines where the student “boats” to various places and includes interactive learning tools like flashcards and drag-and-drop features to enhance learning and retention. Course-takers will be able to design and name the virtual boat that takes them through the course and map how far they’ve “traveled” within it. In the state of Florida, anyone born on or after January 1, 1988, who operates a vessel powered by 10 horsepower or more must pass an approved boating safety course and have in his/her possession photographic identification and proof of boating safety education completion issued by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. The online BoatUS Foundation boating safety course and exam are approved by the National Association of State Boating Law Administrators (NASBLA) and recognized by the U.S. Coast Guard as exceeding the minimum requirements for the National Recreational Boating Safety Program. “NASBLA approval of our Florida Boating Safety Course is a meaningful investment in boater safety, said Lynne O’Hearn, Program Manager at BoatUS Foundation. “Boater education is one of the most effective ways to prevent accidents, and this course gives Florida boaters the opportunity to build their skills to better enjoy Florida waterways safely.”

UNITED STATES COAST GUARD FLOTILLA 7-16 OFFERS SAFE BOATING CLASSES IN GULFPORT, FL, MEETS THE THIRD WEDNESDAY OF EACH MONTH. These classes qualify the attendee for the FWC Safe Boating Card. This card is required for most people born after January 1, 1988 to legally operate a power boat with greater than 10hp motor in Florida. The one-day class includes instruction on safety equipment, boat handling, rules of the road, navigation aids, communications, trailering, legal requirements and others. Power and sailboats are covered, as well as personal watercraft. Of course, besides making a boater in compliance, the main goal of the class is to create a safer boater. Classes are offered on the second Saturday of each month. To sign up, contact Marty Richardson at (630) 674-5352. Flotilla 7-16 also performs free courtesy vessel safety inspections for power and sail boats, personal watercraft, and paddle craft. The inspector will come to your location, inspect the required safety features of your vessel, and if you pass will provide a safety sticker to mount on your vessel. But the vessel owner then knows of any deficiencies to correct before having an accident or being sanctioned by the Coast Guard. - STUARTDespite numerous COVID-19 restrictions, more and more boaters are taking to the water to alleviate at-home boredom while taking advantage of the open-air benefits and more pandemic-free aspects of recreational boating. But if you haven’t been out boating in a while, are your vessel’s lights operating properly? Do you have a sufficient number of life jackets for the number of passengers aboard? Is your engine’s ventilation system up to par? To get you started on a new year boating adventure, now may be a perfect time to consider getting a 2025 Vessel Safety Check (VSC) offered by certified VSC examiners from the St. Lucie River Power Squadron, also known as America’s Boating Club of Martin County. These trained VSC examiners from the local squadron will point out safety features such as minimum requirements required by the U.S. Coast Guard, examine fundamental mechanical aspects of your vessel, and answer questions how you can have more fun safely on the water. BOATING CLASSES - A Vessel Safety Check is a complimentary check of your boat conducted by members of the Auxiliary, confirming that it meets both federal and state requirements for safety. No citations are issued, and the results of the safety check are not reported to any enforcement agency, but a decal is awarded to display when the vessel has passed the examination. The Vessel Safety Check (VSC) is performed at your boat, whether in a slip, at the launch ramp, or in your driveway, by a certified Vessel Examiner,

Seatrout will inhabit most grass flats in 3-6ft. of water. Look for the murky green color indicating sea grass. Larger Seatrout will become more prevalent during the early spring months. Artificial presentations all work but shrimp, suspended under a popping cork, will be the most effective way to catch lots of Seatrout.
Tarpon will begin to arrive during their annual spring migration from Mexico and beyond. Look for them off the beaches, in Pine Island Sound, Redfish/N. Captiva passes, Boca Grande and Charlotte Harbor. In other words, this time of year and for a couple of months, they will be everywhere. I suggest anglers who have never caught or hooked a tarpon hire a guide, as there are several locations and
several different techniques to be utilized. Proper equipment is also needed.
Snook will begin to move from rivers, creeks and canals to the beaches to spawn during April.
Redfish become the target fish for many. The higher daily tides offer anglers and fishing guides access to shallow, less pressured areas of the winter months. Look for them around the oyster beds, mangroves, around the passes, and under docks. While artificial presentations will work, Pinfish, Pilchards, and shrimp will provide the best results.
Mangrove Snapper are an inshore favorite. They are smaller than most offshore Mangrove Snapper because they are younger and will not move offshore until they reach a larger size (usually about 3 years old).

Snook Heating Up in the Passes and Beaches
Snook fishing continues to improve as fish begin staging in the passes and along the beaches. With warming water temperatures, snook are feeding more aggressively and transitioning out of their winter patterns.
We’re finding fish around passes, jetties, and beach troughs, especially on moving tides. Live pilchards and shrimp are producing well, along with soft plastics and topwater plugs early in the morning.
If you’re planning a snook fishing charter Marco Island or Naples, this is prime time to catch quality fish as they begin to spread out and feed heavily.
Redfish, Trout, and Pompano Providing Consistent Action
The inshore bite remains strong and is a great option for anglers looking for steady action. Redfish are still feeding well along mangrove shorelines and oyster bars, particularly on higher tides.

Happy Easter! April weather can be a whirlwind hot, rainy and windy. April Fishing is great, no matter what the weather brings. The spring mullet run can creates eating frenzy, along beaches and inshore waters.
Warmer weather made for a great snook bite. Anglers enjoyed catching snook on the shallow flats, along mangrove shorelines, and near docks. Live bait lured the line siders to strike, anglers enjoyed catching three species of snook, common snook, fat snook, and tarpon snook. As a warmer weather continues in water temperatures rise the bite will get better and better. Snook fishing along docks, sea walls and mangrove shorelines great areas for anglers to target the linesiders. Sunrise provides great action with top water Rapala skitter walks entice explosive strikes. Mid day switch to a DOA C.A.L. 3 inch shad in glow / gold rush belly. Seawalls and grass flats are great areas to find snook laid up ambushing bait schools, be sure to stay quit and look for bait schools or snook crashing baits as signs of life.
Tarpon fanatics! April tarpon action gets the drag screaming. Tarpon can seen rolling on the surface, both sides of the tides produce great results. DOA bait busters in pearl / black back get the silver kings excited. Live bait for tarpon will get the drag screaming, free line or slow troll baits along mangrove shorelines and drop offs for consistent action. Tarpon fishing was steady on both sides of the tides. Channels and mangrove shorelines where the areas to target. Live bait triggered the best strikes for anglers as tarpon put on a show with their acrobatic leaps.
When not targeting snook and tarpon anglers enjoyed catching plenty of other species. Jacks offered plenty of drag screaming action, triple tail, snapper, barracuda, ladyfish, drum, and many other species put a bend in the rod for anglers.

drag screaming on light tackle, target jacks along seawalls and grass flats. The jacks school together ambushing schools of live bait in there vicinity. The annual shrimp run has arrived in Miami, bringing some of the best tarpon fishing we have seen all year. Massive schools of shrimp are moving through the waterways, stacking up along bridges, inlets, and channel edges—creating prime feeding conditions for trophy tarpon in these inshore fishing zones.
The bite has been especially strong around bridge shadow lines, where artificial lighting attracts shrimp and baitfish, drawing in large tarpon ready to feed aggressively. For anglers looking to book a Miami fishing charter, this is peak season for targeting tarpon after dark.
