What is an Electric Fishing Reel?
An electric fishing reel is a motorized reel that retrieves line automatically using battery power. Push a button, and the motor cranks for you! They’re designed to handle deep drop fishing where manual retrieval would be exhausting. Think swordfish at 1,000 feet or queen snapper at 600 feet.

Pompano Portobello Mornay
Ingredients
• 8 tablespoons butter, divided
• 3 medium Florida portobello mushrooms, sliced
• 1/2 cup brandy
• 1 cup heavy cream
• 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese
• 2 fresh Florida thyme leaves, minced
• Salt and pepper to taste
• 1 tablespoon seafood seasoning
• 4 6-ounce Florida pompano fillets
Preparation:
Melt 4 tablespoons butter in a large sauté pan over medium-high heat. Add mushroom slices; sauté about 7 minutes until soft and lightly browned. Add brandy and simmer until liquid reduces to a glaze. Reduce heat to medium and add cream, Parmesan cheese and thyme; simmer 7 minutes until sauce thickens, stirring occasionally. Season with salt and pepper and keep warm. Season the fillets with seafood seasoning. Melt remaining 4 tablespoons butter in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add fish and sauté 3 minutes per side, turning once, until cooked through and opaque in the center. Transfer fillets to serving plate and spoon sauce over.

Archipelago Yachts announced the All-Electric Archipelago 40 at boot Düsseldorf 2026, introducing the first fully electric model in the British company’s range.
Based on the proven and highly capable Archipelago 40, the all-electric version has been carefully re-engineered to accommodate a high-capacity battery system and electric drivetrain, while retaining the robust, go-anywhere DNA that defines the Archipelago brand.

AMERICA CLASSES - The U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla 11-1 Clearwater is pleased to offer the Boat America® Safe Boating Course to area boaters throughout 2026. With Florida leading the nation in both registered recreational vessels and boating-related accidents, boating safety education has never been more important.
To better serve the community, Flotilla 11-1 Clearwater offers the Boat America Safe Boating Course both in person in Clearwater and virtually via Zoom. These flexible learning options make it easier for boaters to meet Florida’s education requirements while accessing life-saving information.
Upon successful completion of the course, participants receive a Boating Safety Education ID Card issued by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC). This card is required for many operators and is often recognized by insurance companies for potential policy discounts.

FLORIDA BOATERS CAN NOW TAKE FREE STATE-APPROVED BOATING SAFETY COURSE - At-home learning helps Florida boaters prepare for the water easily and conveniently. The BoatUS Foundation for Boating Safety and Clean Water has launched the only free interactive boating safety course for Florida recreational boaters. The course, which is approved by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission and meets state boating safety education requirements, can be taken at the student’s own pace. After passing the exam, they can print their own certificate of completion for immediate use and will receive a lifetime card from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.The course provides video demonstrations and sample common boating situations for students to interact with to better understand how to evaluate real-world instances. The learning experience includes storylines where the student “boats” to various places and includes interactive learning tools like flashcards and drag-and-drop features to enhance learning and retention. Course-takers will be able to design and name the virtual boat that takes them through the course and map how far they’ve “traveled” within it. In the state of Florida, anyone born on or after January 1, 1988, who operates a vessel powered by 10 horsepower or more must pass an approved boating safety course and have in his/her possession photographic identification and proof of boating safety education completion issued by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. The online BoatUS Foundation boating safety course and exam are approved by the National Association of State Boating Law Administrators (NASBLA) and recognized by the U.S. Coast Guard as exceeding the minimum requirements for the National Recreational Boating Safety Program. “NASBLA approval of our Florida Boating Safety Course is a meaningful investment in boater safety, said Lynne O’Hearn, Program Manager at BoatUS Foundation. “Boater education is one of the most effective ways to prevent accidents, and this course gives Florida

UNITED STATES COAST GUARD FLOTILLA 7-16 OFFERS SAFE BOATING CLASSES IN GULFPORT, FL, MEETS THE THIRD WEDNESDAY OF EACH MONTH. These classes qualify the attendee for the FWC Safe Boating Card. This card is required for most people born after January 1, 1988 to legally operate a power boat with greater than 10hp motor in Florida. The one-day class includes instruction on safety equipment, boat handling, rules of the road, navigation aids, communications, trailering, legal requirements and others. Power and sailboats are covered, as well as personal watercraft. Of course, besides making a boater in compliance, the main goal of the class is to create a safer boater. Classes are offered on the second Saturday of each month. To sign up, contact Marty Richardson at (630) 674-5352. Flotilla 7-16 also performs free courtesy vessel safety inspections for power and sail boats, personal watercraft, and paddle craft. The inspector will come to your location, inspect the required safety features of your vessel, and if you pass will provide a safety sticker to mount on your vessel. The inspection is a courtesy, so no action is taken if problems are found. But the vessel owner then knows of any deficiencies to correct before having an accident or being sanctioned by the Coast Guard. Despite numerous COVID-19 restrictions, more and more boaters are taking to the water to alleviate at-home boredom while taking advantage of the open-air benefits and more pandemic-free aspects of recreational boating. But if you haven’t been out boating in a while, are your vessel’s lights operating properly? Do you have a sufficient number of life jackets for the number of passengers aboard? Is your engine’s ventilation system up to par? To get you started on a new year boating adventure, now may be a perfect time to consider getting a 2025 Vessel Safety Check (VSC) offered by certified VSC examiners from the St. Lucie River Power Squadron, also known as America’s Boating Club of Martin County. These trained VSC examiners from the local squadron will point out safety features such as minimum requirements required by the U.S. Coast Guard, examine fundamental mechanical aspects of your vessel, and answer questions how you can have more fun safely on the water. Tampa Bay As I Knew It (Part II)
Growing up in Tampa Bay in the 50’s and 60’s had so much to offer when it came to fishing. When we were not going to Boca Grande for the weekends, we spent a lot of time exploring new spots and there were plenty of places to find. In the 50’s and 60’s the mindset was to fish offshore and very little attention was given to the inshore areas. Last month I covered the upper part of the bay and this month I have some stories about how it was in lower Tampa Bay in the 50’s and 60’s.
Bayside Power Station (Port Sutton Road)
We called it Black Docks, and the winter fishing was terrific. The colder it got the hotter the bite. In those days we were allowed to fish from the bank or run your boat right up to the hot water runoff. The bank would have elbow to elbow fishermen catching pompano, redfish, snook, trout, sharks, sheepsheads and yes sometime a school of catfish would move in and mess up the bite. I can’t remember the year, but I do remember the story of an angler falling into the water from the bank and drowning. After that, all fishing from shore was stopped and no trespassing signs went up.
Bullfrog Creek Railroad Crossing
There’s a railroad crossing on Bullfrog creek that I remember well. Before there was a catch limit or size on redfish we
would sit next to the crossing and load up on 12-inch redfish all morning long using fiddler crabs or shrimp. The last time I stopped by was 10 years ago and an old lady with her cane pole was fishing at the same spot we used to and had several undersize redfish on a stringer. I walked the area and saw several large redfish and sheepshead hanging around the pilling, so I guess the fishing was still pretty good at the old crossing.
Little Manatee River
We didn’t fish in the area much since it was a long run for us from the old boat ramp on 22nd street causeway next to the Seabreeze restaurant, but when we did one of our favorite spots was the broken-down bridge area and the mouth of the river. Winter was our most productive time,as in the summer months we were too busy fishing Boca Grande or the Courtney Campbell Causeway.
Piney Point
In the 40’s through the mid 50’s there was the Bee-Line ferry that went from Piney Point to Pinellas Point, the original site of O’Neal’s bait shop. It was a 69-mile drive through US Highway 41, and this took about 55 minutes to get across and it saved a long drive if you wanted to go from Pinellas to Manatee County.

Winter tips for hot fishing Winter seems to come and go about every 5 to 7 days, as cold fronts roll in, leaving windy conditions, turbid water, and rough seas to settle. When to fish depends on weather conditions, and of course, whenever you can. Here are a few tips for maximizing your catch when winter weather throws you curves.
1.) Barometric pressure can play a major role in turning on a bite or shutting the bite down. Incoming cold fronts, especially fronts that are fast-moving, will drop barometric pressure fairly quickly. Fish sense the change and recognize it as an opportunity to feed quickly before the conditions become too difficult to find prey. Getting on the water ahead of the front can pay big dividends for hungry fish.
2.) Know the forage that your targeted species prefer. Inshore, the majority of targeted species will be eating either shrimp or crabs. Sheepshead will eat both but also most any kind of mollusk, barnacles, and fiddler crabs. Trout primarily forage for shrimp. Redfish will follow mullet schools that mill around grass beds, kicking up crabs, shrimp, or small baitfish, allowing an easy meal for a hungry redfish. Snook can be very temperamental in cold situations, and when water temperatures

around the docks was fantastic all year round with some of the biggest snook and redfish for residents. Still, today in the spring it’s one of the best places for large snook if you can get them out of what remains of the old pylons left from the loading dock of the Bee-Line ferry landing.
Bishop Harbor
There used to be a small boat ramp off the old 41 Hwy Road that took you to the Skyway Bridge, and from that ramp we could access the fertile grounds of Bishop Harbor in our little boat. Mariposa Key at the entrance to the harbor was a home base for mullet fishermen in the 30’s and to this day there still exists some of the remains of their cabin and part of the dock.
I look forward to hearing from my readers about any fishing stories they have from the 50’s and 60’s fishing in Tampa Bay. Thanks to my uncle who took the time to teach me how to fish and make me the angler I am today.

The SkywayBridge did not open until 1955 and that was the downfall of the Bee-Line ferry. This fishing
fall into the upper 50’s, these fish can succumb to the cold and either become very lethargic and feed irregularly or become stunned as if in a coma. Snook are closed, and possession is prohibited regardless of whether a fish appears to be dying or just stunned. Most will recover as water temperature rises. Flounder will be available in the next few months, and these ambush predators depend on currents to bring forage to them. Small minnows and shrimp are their prime targets as they position themselves on an up-tide side at the bottom of a pass or area with moving water.
3.) The metabolisms of fish are regulated by water temperature because fish are cold-blooded. As water temperatures drop, the requirement for food decreases, since digestion slows. Scale down the size of your baits. Small jigs that slowly work at the bottom 1/3 of the water column (where most fish will be) are effective, but slow is the key here. Live or artificial shrimp with just enough weight to keep them on the bottom can be deadly. A small jig head threaded up the tail with the last segment of the shrimp pinched off works very well.
My personal choice is a DOA Shrimp. Some anglers choose a Berkley Gulp! Shrimp for their scent.
4.) Winter waters are cold, and as the temperatures drop, algae die off in the water, and the water can become very

clear. This can make your lines and terminal tackle more visible to fish, making them shy away from your lure or bait. Dropping down your main line and leader test is the easiest way to improve a stealthy presentation. Small main line, small leader, and small baits are the key to getting bit.
5.) The early bird doesn’t get the worm. Sleep in and get on the water around 9 or 10 a.m., allowing the sun to warm the water to get appetites stirring.
Take these few tips to heart with you on your next fishing trip and give them some thought. While the temperature may be chilling, you could find that your action heats up. ‘Til then…I’ll catch ya later!

February in the Palm beaches provides anglers with cooler temperatures at times, moderate winds, while targeting their favorite species or bucket list species.
Anglers targeting snook had great success working dark muddy bottom areas along with mangrove shorelines and sea walls. These areas provided warmer water temperatures for snook like lying waiting on bait fish to come across their path. Live bait rapala X raps and flies all enticed the line siders to eat. Anglers also enjoyed catching multiple species of snook to add to their catch list.
Deep channels and drops excellent areas to locate a plethora of species. Anglers enjoyed using Doa curl tail jigs, along with shrimp on the bottom to catch a variety of species. Snook, jacks, trout, bluefish, ladyfish, snapper and many other species put a bend in the rod.
As these cool fronts continue to push into our local areas the bite should stay consistent and hopefully bringing more migratory species into the zone.
Snook anglers should target deeper holes, bridges, channels, and sea walls. The snook will be holding near the bottom and tight on structure, high noon sunny days look for snook laying up
on sand bars basking in the sun.
The snook will strike live bait or DOA C.A.L. 3” shad tail in Arkansas Glow.
The tarpon fishing in the back canals and bays offer great action with the fly rod and artificial lures. Keep an eye out for rolling fish on the surface and work the area thoroughly. Deeper passes hold bigger fish up to 60 pounds. Anglers using live baits will have plenty of action but artificial lures like a DOA terror eyz and DOA BaitBuster in Pearl / green back provoke strikes from the silver king.
The ICW will be teaming with life as anglers can target jacks, snook, tarpon, sharks, drum, sheepshead, and pompano. Seawalls and docks are great areas for jacks and snook during the day and at night. Live shrimp, mullet and DOA C.A.L. 3” shad tail will produce many strikes. Top water Rapala skitter walk early morning and late in the afternoon provided explosive action for top water fanatics.
Beginning of the week was brisk, anglers still enjoyed drag screaming action.
Rock piles and channels held plenty of Lane, mangrove, mutton, snapper, along with drum, grunts and many other species to put a bend in the rod.

ladyfish, Jax and snook as well. Mangrove shorelines were the target area for those anglers looking to tango with the linesiders. Snook have been schooled up in troughs and along drop offs, striking rapala X raps and live baits worked in their vicinity. The cooler water temps have made the fish a little slower, so presentation was key. The cooler temperatures did not detour tarpon from striking. Clear sunny days tarpon enjoy, muddy bottom mangrove shoreline areas. Both sides of the tides anglers were able to target tarpon as they can be seen rolling on the surface. Live bait predominantly work the best but a Rapala x raps also a great choice to get hooked up.
Southeast Florida
Much of the nation is under a severe winter storm advisory but in South Florida we are currently in the 80’s and sunny and warm. We have had a few cold fronts (low in the 50’s and highs in the 70’s) which is what we need to get the sailfish moving down to our part of the world. Sailfishing was very good in November and December but tapered off a bit the past two weeks. Luckily the bite picked back up this weekend and the sailfishing should now stay consistent well into the spring and we should get some incredible double-digit days after practically most cold front the rolls through, as long as we have the wind, current and water color needed.
I was honored again by The Billfish Foundation to win Top South Florida Release Captain for Atlantic Sailfish and second overall as Top Atlantic Release Captain. This award has thousands of entries so it’s quite the honor. We will continue to strive on competing for this award again next year.
of the big highlights this year so far is the daytime swordfishing and the new technique we have honed to catch a daytime swordfish with IGFA rules - which means No Electric Reels. We are fine tuning a system to allow us to use a Penn 50 International with 50-pound braid and drop down to the bottom. Depending on the current we can employ two different methods, but it has been very successful. We have guided three different anglers on three different trips in either achieving their IGFA Billfish Slam or getting them one step closer to achieving it. An IGFA Billfish Slam is catching all the different billfish within IGFA rules. The Billfish species are
is usually one of the hardest ones to catch but we can make it happen. The goal is to become one of the premier guide services for that and for South Florida to become the premier are for that as well.
To sum it all up, now is the time to get out of the cold and come down to South Florida and enjoy some great kitefishing for sailfish as well as kingfish, mahis, wahoo etc. Or come down and take a crack at a big swordfish during the day either with electric or with manual conventional reels.
