West Marine Appoints Paulee Day as Chief Executive Officer

FORT LAUDERDALE, FL – November

Florida Salmon with Spinach Cream Sauce

Ingredients:

• 4 (6- to 8-ounce) Florida salmon fillets (skinless)

• 1 cup Florida cherry tomatoes, halved

• 3 cups Florida baby spinach

• 2 teaspoons Florida seafood seasoning blend

• ½ cup sun-dried tomatoes, chopped

• 1 tablespoon fresh garlic, chopped fine

• 1 tablespoon olive oil

• ½ lemon, juiced (plus slices, for garnish)

• 1 cup heavy whipping cream

• ¼ cup vegetable broth

• 2 tablespoons fresh herbs (oregano, parsley), chopped fine

• ½ cup Parmesan cheese, grated fresh

• 4 sprigs fresh basil, hand torn for garnish

• 1 pinch crushed red pepper flakes (for heat, if desired)

• Sea salt and fresh ground pepper, to taste

Preparation:

Preheat a large sauté or cast-iron pan over medium-high heat. Season salmon fillets with 1 teaspoon of seafood seasoning blend. Add olive oil to the preheated pan, then add seasoned salmon fillets. Cook for 2 minutes on each side. Remove from pan and set aside. Decrease the heat to medium-low. In the same pan, add the sun-dried tomatoes, garlic, remainder of the seafood seasoning blend and halved cherry tomatoes. Simmer while stirring, until tomatoes start to wilt slightly. Add vegetable broth and stir to release any bits stuck to the bottom of the pan. Continue to simmer until liquid in pan is reduced by half. Add heavy cream, chopped herbs, lemon juice and red pepper flakes. Stir ingredients and return to a light simmer. Add baby spinach and cook until wilted into the sauce. Add ½ of the grated parmesan and stir. Taste sauce and adjust seasoning with sea salt and fresh ground pepper. Add salmon fillets back into the pan with the sauce. Cook for another 2 minutes, or until salmon is cooked through. Sprinkle the remainder of the Parmesan cheese and garnish with fresh basil and sliced lemon.

Small changes can go a long way in minimizing your carbon footprint. If you’re renting a boat, consider choosing environmentally-friendly boats when available. For boat owners, routine engine maintenance can significantly reduce emissions and fuel consumption. Keep your propeller clean and properly sized, and minimize engine idling whenever possible.

Anchor, fuel, & dispose responsibly

Improper fueling or waste disposal can be damaging to marine ecosystems. Follow these best practices to reduce your impact: • Refuel responsibly: Use absorbent pads or spill-proof containers, and refuel away from open water whenever possible.

• Use pump-out stations: Keep bilge and holding tanks functioning properly and empty them only at designated locations.

Getting your anchor to hold should be easy—no guesswork, no drama. Whether you’re just stopping for a quick dip or staying for the night, you want your setup to work every time.

So, what really makes the difference? The right anchoring accessories, simply put. Having the right gear means you’re more likely to get it right on the first try. Here’s a look at the essential boat accessories every skipper should have to make anchoring easier and safer.

Essential Anchoring Gear Checklist

1. The Right Boat Anchor

Your main anchor is the backbone of your anchoring system. Different anchors perform better on different bottoms—mud, sand, rock, or weeds—so choose one that matches where you boat. For most bays and coastal waters, a modern fluke or claw anchor offers reliable holding. Always size your anchor using the manufacturer’s recommendations for your boat’s size.

2. Anchor Rode (Line and Chain)

The rode is the connection between your boat and the bottom. Essentially, it’s a combination of chain and rope:

• Chain: Aim for at least 15 to 20 feet of chain. The extra weight keeps the anchor shank down so the flukes bite into the bottom as they should. It also provides critical abrasion resistance down near the anchor.

• Line: Nylon line stretches just enough to soften the ride, taking the edge off waves and wakes so your boat doesn’t get jolted. This prevents sharp jolts that can rip the anchor free. The total length of your rode determines your scope—the ratio needed to set the anchor to the seabed securely.

3. Anchor Windlass

If your boat is over 30 feet (or you run heavy chain rodes), an anchor windlass is a necessity. It’s an electric or hydraulic winch that does all the heavy lifting—hauling up the anchor and all that tensioned line. With a windlass, you won’t strain your back or risk injury, and pulling up the anchor is much quicker.

4. Deck Cleats, Chocks, and Rollers

These accessories are responsible for securing the rode and protecting the boat’s hull.

• Cleats: Your final anchor rode ties off here.

They must be heavy-duty, well-mounted, and backed by solid plates to handle the massive shock loads they’ll see.

• Bow Roller: This keeps the anchor and chain aligned so you don’t scratch the hull or rail when dropping or pulling in the anchor.

• Snubbers: If you run a chain rode, a snubber (aka a nylon bridle) will make a huge difference. It takes the strain off the chain and transfers the load to a deck cleat, so the nylon can stretch and smooth out any jolts or rattles.

5. Depth and Scope Tools

Smart anchoring requires precise information. And you can’t anchor safely without a good depth sounder. In addition, a chartplotter or GPS makes it easy to see where you are and spot right away if your anchor starts to drag.

While a mooring buoy is a pre-installed convenience, several small mooring accessories are vital when anchoring in open water:

• Marker Buoy/Anchor Ball: Use this to temporarily mark exactly where your anchor is set. It is helpful for both retrieval and keeping other boaters informed.

• Heavy-Duty Gloves: Non-negotiable for handling rough lines and gritty chains safely.

• Line/Chain Hook: A chain or line hook makes handling your gear easier—whether you’re setting up a snubber or pulling the anchor out of the water.

UNITED STATES COAST GUARD FLOTILLA 7-16 OFFERS SAFE BOATING CLASSES IN GULFPORT, FL, MEETS THE THIRD WEDNESDAY OF EACH MONTH. These classes qualify the attendee for the FWC Safe Boating Card. This card is required for most people born after January 1, 1988 to legally operate a power boat with greater than 10hp motor in Florida. The one-day class includes instruction on safety equipment, boat handling, rules of the road, navigation aids, communications, trailering, legal requirements and others. Power and sailboats are covered, as well as personal watercraft. Of course, besides making a boater in compliance, the main goal of the class is to create a safer boater. A VESSEL SAFETY CHECK - STUART -

Despite numerous COVID-19 restrictions, more and more boaters are taking to the water to alleviate at-home boredom while taking advantage of the open-air benefits and more pandemic-free aspects of recreational boating. But if you haven’t been out boating in a while, are your vessel’s lights operating properly? Do you have a sufficient number of life jackets for the number of passengers aboard? Is your engine’s ventilation system up to par? To get you started on a new year boating adventure, now may be a perfect time to consider getting a 2025 Vessel Safety Check (VSC) offered by certified VSC examiners from the St. Lucie River Power Squadron, also known as America’s Boating Club of Martin County. These trained VSC examiners from the local squadron will point out safety features such as minimum requirements required by the U.S. Coast Guard, examine fundamental mechanical aspects of your vessel, and answer questions how you can have more fun safely on the water. These are just a few of the many discussion points

covered in this voluntary examination. As an added plus, Vessel Safety Checks are free to boat owners. And if you don’t “pass muster” with the thorough examination, the summary report is yours and yours alone. BOATING CLASSES - A Vessel Safety Check is a complimentary check of your boat conducted by members of the Auxiliary, confirming that it meets both federal and state requirements for safety. No citations are issued, and the results of the safety check are not reported to any enforcement agency, but a decal is awarded to display when the vessel has passed the examination. The Vessel Safety Check (VSC) is performed at your boat, whether in a slip, at the launch ramp, or in your driveway, by a certified Vessel Examiner, at a mutually-convenient time. It usually takes 20-45 minutes, depending on the size of your boat. After successful inspection you are awarded a vessel safety check sticker which is affixed to your vessel near your state registration sticker. It starts at 9:00 am and completes at 5:00 pm. The course includes the USCG exam which, if passed, results in a Florida lifetime boating card/license. Guests are welcome to come and join our monthly meetings and listen to our guest speakers who discuss a wide variety of fishing techniques and helpful tips for all anglers. Meetings are held the last Monday of every month at the Mudville Grille located at 3105 Beach Blvd. Doors are open at 6:00 p.m. and the meeting begins at 7:00 p.m.

Holidays and Sailfishing Holiday season is upon us. I hope everyone had a Great Thanksgiving and we now have Christmas and New Years coming up. Charter business has been a little bit slow, so we took advantage and did some work on our boat. We installed all new electronics and now have the newest and best from Simrad. We have new Simrad NSS4 multi-function displays as well as a new Halo Radar that we are about to install. We also tore off the Aquatraction flooring and had a company remove every speck of residual glue and had a new Aquatraction floor installed. The boat looks amazing.

But let’s get to the fishing. Fishing has been very good especially for kite fishing. We have been catching sailfish very consistently and had quite a few days with five and six sailfish per day. Besides the sailfish there have also been some decent mahis and some real nice size kingfish. Throw in a few tunas and bonitos and it makes for a fun filled, action packed day. This is our typical trip in the wintertime where we kite fish with live bait and fish on what we call the edge which is only 2 – 3 miles form show, so regardless of weather we can almost always go out and go fishing.

The swordfish bite has been very good. We have not had a lot of

swordfish trips and unfortunately the only trip we had we had one bite but pulled it off. The reports though have been very good and there have also been quite a few 300-to-400-pound swords caught.

The Holiday season is always very busy. Beginning mid-December to just after New Years many people come down to spend the Holidays with friends and family and what a better way to spend time together than a day out on the water catching fish. We already have some bookings, so I encourage everyone to book their thrips before we get sold out. We also offer gift certificates so if you are stuck and need a great gift for that someone special, we offer gift certificates. Just shoot me an email and I can have a gift certificate sent to you.

Happy Holidays and Merry Christmas to all. Inshore fishing this month provides a variety of species to target throughout the water column. Live bait and artificial enthusiast will all enjoy drag screaming action.

Snook season closes December 15th, but that should not stop anglers from targeting them. Snook fanatics can find stellar action near deep channels, docks, and sea walls. Live bait, shrimp, DOA 3” shrimp and DOA C.A.L. 3 inch shad, great baits to get the strike. Back bays and canals are great areas to locate snook and it is not uncommon to catch four different species of snook. Night time fishing also a great choice to target snook, fly fishing offers many strikes and drag screaming action.

Tarpon fishing continues to shine, the silver king will be plentiful in bays, canals and channels. Live bait shrimp and mullet drifted with the tide best technique to hook a tarpon, artificial enthusiasts can also get in on the action. A DOA 3 inch shrimp in glow, DOA terror Eyz and a Rapala sub walk entice strikes. Typical size of the

tarpon range from 5 to 50 pounds.

Jacks, drum, trout, bluefish and lady fish all roam the flats and channel edges, look for bait schools or birds in the area helping to locate fish. A good bottom machine like the humminbird solix with side scan and down imaging helps pinpoint fish on or near the bottom. Live shrimp freelined, 3” DOA Shrimp or a DOA C.A.L. 3 inch shad in glow holographic will get you hooked up.

Also wishing you all a Happy New Year! January offers a plethora of species to target throughout Jupiter and Palm Beach. Typically cool fronts bring cool water temperatures and seasonal weather. The cooler north east winds bring in migratory schooling fish for anglers to battle.

The inter coastal waters will be teaming with jacks, tarpon, snook, drum, sharks and many other species. Live baits work great, as well as artificial baits like DOA C.A.L 3” shad tail in glow / gold belly rush and DOA Shrimp. Remember work your baits slow and work the area thoroughly. Look for any signs of bait and birds signifying fish are in the area.

Snook can be found cruising shallow flats, docks and seawalls. Artificial baits like Doa 3” shrimp and DOA curl tail awesome baits to get linesiders to chew. The bigger snook can be found around bridges and deep holes ranging from 5 to 20 feet. DOA terror eyz and C.A.L. 3” shad tail excellent baits to jig the bottom for rod bending action

Channels, mangrove shorelines and sea walls will offer great fishing for, jacks, bluefish, mackerel, drum, pompano and snook. Clean water and moving water the key for successful fishing.

Boats should gather on the south side of the Matlacha bridge at 5:30 p.m., and the parade will begin at 6 p.m. The best viewing is from the bridge or along the shores of Matlacha — but please respect private property.

• PUNTA GORDA | DECEMBER 20

SCHEDULED: Punta Gorda Boat Parade, Punta Gorda Isles. 6:30 pm. The parade route is within Punta Gorda Isles. Best place to view is from a boat. While there are no designated public viewing areas on land along the 4.5mile parade route, there are many viewing areas along Almar Drive. Do not park on the street. Find your spot early and bring chairs.

SCHEDULED: Tampa Riverwalk Lighted Boat Parade. The parade begins at the southern tip of Davis Island, travels through the Convention Center basin and up to the Heights where the boats will turn around and head to Sparkman Wharf, where judging will occur and the parade will end. Public viewing at Armature Works, Channel Drive, Curtis Hixon, Davis Island, Harbour Island, Sparkman Wharf, Water Works Park. Parking is available at several public parking lots.

• TREASURE ISLAND | DECEMBER 20

SCHEDULED: Treasure Island Holiday Boat Parade. The parade will begin promptly at 6:20 p.m. just south of the Treasure Island Causeway. The route travels south of Paradise Island, back through the Treasure Island Causeway Bridge at 7 p.m., around the Isles of Palms and Capri, and finishes at John’s Pass at approximately 8:15 p.m. Viewing areas at Treasure Island Golf & Tennis Club, along the Treasure Island Causeway Bridge, and at John’s Pass.
