How to Get Internet on a Boat: Reliable internet connectivity remains the biggest challenge for anyone looking to work remote from a boat. Fortunately, a few solid solutions exist: • Cellular data is the most common option.
Many boaters install cellular boosters with external antennas to improve signal strength when near shore. For serious digital nomads, consider a dual-carrier setup with automatic switching between providers for better coverage.
• Marina Wi-Fi is available at most docks, though reliability varies. Wi-Fi boosters can help strengthen these signals. Some experienced boaters use directional antennas to connect to public Wi-Fi from considerable distances offshore.
• Satellite internet has improved dramatically in recent years. Services like Starlink are changing the game for boat-based workers, offering high-
speed connections even miles offshore. Though more expensive than cellular options, satellite provides true freedom for those wanting to venture further from land. Having backup connections is essential when working remotely. As tempting as it might be to work while underway, it’s nearly impossible to focus properly while also handling your vessel safely. Next, create a schedule that aligns with your location. Early mornings often bring calmer waters and fewer distractions, making them ideal for focused work. Save video calls for when you know you’ll have the strongest internet connection. (Many people who work remote from a boat find that starting early allows them to finish by early afternoon, leaving plenty of time to enjoy boating activities!)
Additionally, take intentional breaks to appreciate your surroundings. A quick swim, fishing for 15 minutes, or simply sitting on deck with coffee can refresh your mind. These
micro-breaks actually improve productivity and represent the primary benefit of the digital nomad lifestyle.
Lastly, weather awareness must become part of your work planning. You’ll want to check forecasts daily and plan intensive work during periods of stable weather. And having a badweather backup plan, such as a nearby coffee shop or library, ensures you can meet deadlines regardless of conditions!

Florida Spiny Lobster Bisque
Ingredients
1 ½ pounds cooked Florida spiny lobster meat
1 rib Florida celery, finely chopped
1 Florida carrot, finely chopped
1 Florida tomato, finely chopped
1 medium onion, finely chopped
2 tablespoons olive oil
6 cloves garlic, chopped
2 tablespoons fresh tarragon leaves, chopped
2 tablespoons fresh thyme leaves, chopped
1 bay leaf
8 black peppercorns
½ cup brandy
½ cup dry sherry
4 cups fish stock or bottled clam juice
¼ cup tomato paste
½ cup heavy cream
1 ½ tablespoons cornstarch
2 tablespoons water
Sea salt and fresh ground pepper, to taste
Preparation:
Slice cooked lobster meat into medallions, reserving a few slices for garnish. Coarsely chop remaining slices; cover and chill. In a 6-quart stockpot sauté the vegetables, garlic, herbs, and peppercorns in oil over medium-high heat until soft. Carefully add the brandy and sherry; simmer until most of the liquid is evaporated. Add the fish stock and simmer uncovered for 1 hour, stirring occasionally. Strain the stock into a large saucepan; discard remaining solids. Add tomato paste and simmer for 10 minutes until stock is reduced to 3 cups of liquid. Stir in cream and simmer for an additional 5 minutes. Combine cornstarch and water in a small bowl and whisk into bisque. Simmer for 2 minutes, stirring, until slightly thickened. Add chopped lobster meat and simmer until lobster meat is heated through. Add salt and pepper. Serve garnished with reserved lobster medallions.

Daytona Beach currently has five designated Clean Marinas (Coquina Marina, Daytona Marina & Boatworks, Halifax Harbor Marina, Halifax River Yacht Club, and Loggerhead Marina Daytona Beach).
This past May Morgan Smith, NE Clean Boating Coordinator, Florida Sea Grant with University of Florida, visited Daytona Marina & Boatworks (645 S. Beach St, Daytona Beach 32114) for their 5-year Clean Marina renewal site visit. Morgan worked with the dockmaster, Bob Garrison, and found this marina to be a great example of what the program aims to accomplish. Bob seemed passionate about the environmental stewardship of the marina, and implemented many Clean Marina “Best Managment Practices” (see attached document). The marina office has educational materials displayed for boaters that highlighted the importance of using pumpouts, Clean Boater Habits booklets, protecting Florida manatees, and more.
This marina’s history is also interesting because it is over 100 years old (Built in 1903). From their website: “The role of the marina has changed over the hundred plus years of its existence. Initially, it had been used as a transportation hub for the east coast, as well as a base camp for intracoastal waterway construction. It has also been a site of naval ship building during and around World War Two, later for race boat construction, and commercial and pleasure fishing boat building.” www.thedaytonamarina.com

Fall Fishing Tips
Late September is the kickoff month of the year for fall time action, and therefore my favorite month is not just for fishing, but as the best time to do all those honey do’s you haven’t done and work on preparing your fishing tackle for my start up time for fall fishing.
Here are a few tips:
• Give your reels a good cleaning by loosening the drags and lubricating the gears. If you don’t feel comfortable doing this there are several good tackle dealers in Tampa who can service your reels at a reasonable price.
• Check your line guides on the rods for any scratches or nicks. Use cotton swabs or borrow a panty hose from your wife when she’s not looking and cut it into small strips. It will last a long time, so don’t worry, she won’t miss one panty hose. Now run the cotton swab or piece of panty hose through the guide. If the panty hose clings or the cotton sticks to the guide, replace the guide or risk losing a fish later. A slight scratch or cut on the guide will cut your line under pressure from a pulling fish.
• At the end of the day never

put your hook on the guide, as this can and will scratch the guide. Use the one supplied by the rod manufacturer or make your own by taking an electrical nylon tie with a screw hole built in and place it just above the top grip on the rod. This allows a place for the hook to sit.
• Most anglers take too much tackle on a fishing trip. Remember the last time you went on a vacation with your wife, and she brought half the closet along? There are many new small soft sided tackle boxes that can handle all your needs. I suggest you leave most of your tackle at home and replenish your tackle box as needed. In addition, many of those medicine bottles that you throw away make great hooks and small sinkers holders to keep on the console of the boat to use as needed also they keep your hooks from getting rusty.
Now the honey do’s are done and your tackle is ready for fishing. Remember, fishing heats up as the water temperature drops.
Late September will bring lower water temperatures and an increase in fish activity. Look for snook cruising the mangrove shorelines; flounder will hit jigs tipped
with shrimp bounced on the bottom around sand patches in the grass flats. Mackerel action steps up a notch and redfish will move further out into the flats during high tides.
September is the lead month for some of the best cobia fishing around Tampa Bay. The range channel markers the action starts mid-September and finishes in late October.
Best bet for me is the snook action as the big females are starting to make their way back into the bay after spawning season is done, they will be hungry and aggressive the best time to catch that trophy fish. Forget the live bait fresh cut threadfin sardines or ladyfish on a 3/0 Kahale (wide gap circle hook) with a number four split shot about five inches from the eye of the hook helps keep the bait on the bottom and let it soak they will come. Big females will be hungry but not much in the mood to chasing down using live baits will get you plenty of the small males I rather wait for the Big Mama to show up.

On my recent fishing charters, we have been concentrating in the Naples & Marco Island areas and we are experiencing the classic summer fishing pattern. It’s a fantastic time to hit the water, especially if you’re an early riser. The weather has been nothing short of perfect in the mornings, with calm seas and clear skies, providing the ideal conditions for a successful outing. However, be prepared for the typical afternoon thunderstorms, which roll in to cool things down. This routine has created a magical window for fishing, where getting on the water at first light is the key to a productive day.
Snook fishing continues to be a highlight of my Naples and Marco Island inshore fishing charters. These feisty fish are actively feeding, and anglers are finding them in their usual haunts along mangrove shorelines, in passes, and near boat docks. Live baits have been the most effective offering, with pilchards, threadfin
herring, and pinfish proving irresistible to the snook. They are particularly aggressive in the early morning hours and late in the evening as they prepare for their summer spawn, so targeting them during these times can lead to some incredible action.

For those chasing the “Silver King,” juvenile tarpon fishing has been excellent. While the massive migratory schools may have moved on, the smaller, acrobatic tarpon have been holding in the backcountry and nearshore areas. Just like the snook, they are most active during low-light conditions. My Naples inshore fishing charters are finding success by sightcasting to rolling fish on the flats and in channels. They’re biting on a variety of live baits, with crabs and mullet being popular choices. These smaller tarpon provide an exhilarating fight and are a fantastic way to spend a
While snook and tarpon have been the stars of the show, redfish have been a bit less productive lately. While they are still present, finding a good bite has been more of a challenge. Anglers are picking up a few here and there, but they are not as consistent as their snook and tarpon counterparts. It’s a good idea to focus on areas with strong current and submerged structure when targeting reds, and don’t be afraid to switch up your bait and presentation if you’re not getting a strike. The live bait on the offshore wrecks and piles has been excellent, so a mixed-bag day with some offshore action is always a great backup plan.

Late Mahi Bite
Fishing changes with time. Fishing in the summer in South Florida meant one thing – and that was mahi fishing in the Gulfstream for big schools of mahis. This usually started just after Labor Day and would last well into end of July. Mahi fishing was still ok in August, but you had to go farther offshore to find them, and we always associated August with the term “August Doldrums” meaning slow fishing. Well now it seems that the mahi fishing in the Gulfstream is slow in June and July and takes off in August. These past two weeks we saw the best mahi fishing of the season. We caught our limit, or close to our limit of mahis on almost every trip. The limit is 10 per person (captain and mate are not included) and the fish had to be 20 inch minimum. Last week almost every mahi was well above legal and had quite a few 10 – 15 pounders (gaffers) mixed in. Such a relief when you pull up to a school of mahis
and you realize that you will not have to measure any of them as they are all well over legal size. In June and part of July we would pull up to a school and almost all the fish were undersize. As much as you want to handle them gently, many of the fish you hook and measure that are short often don’t make it. Mahis are ravenous and they completely inhale a bait. Even if you just cut the leader, I always wonder how many still survive. So, when we do pull up to a school of undersize fish, we usually keep going. Hopefully we have a charter that understands, because we do need to protect that resource as that is what keeps us in business in the summer. Here are a few interesting notes on mahis: Lifespan is 4 years on average, they grow about 2 inches a week, sexual mature in 3 months, some mature as early as 14 inches, a 20-pound fish is usually less than a year old, 50 pounders are 2 -3 years old. Everglades Fishing Report
It has been a while since my last fishing report so I wanted to let you know what is going on right now in the Everglades. Late summer fishing has been pretty solid with lots of 20-50 lb tarpon around. It has been hot down here with some afternoon thunderstorms rolling through, so we have been getting out on the water before the sun is up. This time of year is important to do that to get some of the best fishing of the day. I spent some time snook fishing last week deep in the backcountry and it was really good with snook up to 30 inches and the occasional tarpon coming out and showing themselves.
The fishing out on the flats of florida bay has also been pretty good. We have been getting plenty of shots at tailing redfish and laid up snook. The water looks good out and the more rain we get the better!!
Some of my favorite fishing of the year is coming up throughout the Fall. Big schools of bait get pushed down and the big tarpon are typically right behind them. I have some dates open for the Fall, so

The best part of fly fishing the Everglades is that it can be done all year round. No matter the weather condition, there is always a place to hide in the Everglades. We mostly target Tarpon, Redfish, and Snook with a fly rod but there are plenty of other options as well. Other species that we may encounter in Everglades National Park are Black Drum, Seatrout, Shark, Tripletail, Permit, Jacks, and Ladyfish. Another great thing about the Everglades is, if the weather is warm, you can target tarpon all year round. There is no other place in the world that you can do that. TARPON – Tarpon can be caught year round, but the peak season is March through July. They can be found from the Gulf all the way to the deep backcountry. They range in size from 5lbs to over 150lb, so having the right setup is important. I recommend using a 10wt-12wt
you can see, they are extremely fast growing.
I would imagine as late as the mahi fishing was this year, September should also be a good month. September is also a month when we start getting ready for kite fishing on the edge. Sailfish will slowly start to show up although we have had many 5 to 8 sailfish days in September. September is also the beginning of the fall daytime swordfish bite. The bigger swordfish will start leaving the colder waters up north and make their way into South Florida. I also can’t wait to start wahoo fishing in the Bahamas this fall. We have had many good wahoo runs in September in Bimini. I am truly looking forward to the fall and the change of fishing seasons. The heat of the summer will soon start to fade, and our winter fish will start making there was south.

SNOOK – Snook are some of the most exciting fish to target with a fly rod. We sight fish snook along the mangrove shorelines and up on the flats. These fish are anywhere from 3lbs-15lbs, so I recommend a 8wt9wt rod.
REDFISH – These fish are found all over the glades. We target them tailing up on the grass flats of Florida Bay, along the Gulf Coast of the Glades, and deep in the backcountry. They range from about 3lbs to over 12lbs, so I like using a 6wt-9wt rod.

UNITED STATES COAST GUARD FLOTILLA 7-16 OFFERS SAFE BOATING CLASSES IN GULFPORT, FL, MEETS THE THIRD WEDNESDAY OF EACH MONTH. These classes qualify the attendee for the FWC Safe Boating Card. This card is required for most people born after January 1, 1988 to legally operate a power boat with greater than 10hp motor in Florida. The one-day class includes instruction on safety equipment, boat handling, rules of the road, navigation aids, communications, trailering, legal requirements and others. Power and sailboats are covered, as well as personal watercraft. Of course, besides making a boater in compliance, the main goal of the class is to create a safer boater. Classes are offered on the second Saturday of each month. To sign up, contact Marty Richardson at (630)674-5352. Flotilla 7-16 also performs free courtesy vessel safety inspections for power and sail boats, personal watercraft, and paddle craft. The inspector will come to your location, inspect the required safety features of your vessel, and if you pass will provide a safety sticker to mount on your vessel. But the vessel owner then knows of any deficiencies to correct before having an accident or being sanctioned by the Coast Guard. CLASSES - A Vessel Safety Check is a complimentary check of your boat conducted by members of the Auxiliary, confirming that it meets both federal and state requirements for safety. No citations are issued, and the results of the safety check are not reported to any enforcement agency, but a decal is awarded to display when the vessel has passed the examination. The Vessel Safety Check (VSC) is performed at your boat, whether in a slip, at the launch ramp, or in your driveway, by a certified Vessel Examiner, at a mutually-convenient time. It usually takes 20-45 minutes, depending on the size of your boat. FLORIDA BOATER’S ID CARD - Don’t forget that “Anyone born on or after January 1, 1988 is required to either have successfully completed a National Association of State Boating Law Administrators (NASBLA) approved boating education course or have passed a course equivalency or temporary certificate examination and have in their possession a boating education ID card and a photo identification card before operating a vessel with a motor of 10 HP or more in Florida.” Identification cards for persons completing the course or the equivalency exam are good for a lifetime. SARASOTA FLOTILLA 82 OF THE USCG AUXILIARY Florida law requires that any person born on or after Jan. 1, 1988, may not operate a vessel powered by a motor of 10 horsepower or greater unless such person has in his or her possession, aboard the vessel, photographic identification, a Florida boater safety identification card (or any other state’s boating card), and the registration for their vessel. Regarding the above law, which has been in effect for over a year, Flotilla 82 of the USCG Auxiliary, based in Sarasota, Florida (at Mote Marine) offers a 1-day course held on the last Saturday of each month. It starts at 9:00 am and completes at 5:00 pm. The course includes the USCG exam which, if passed, results in a Florida lifetime boating card/license.
