Citrus Marinated Shrimp with Florida Avocado
Ingredients:
• 1 pound large Florida pink shrimp, peeled and deveined with the tail on
• 2 Florida pink grapefruit, peeled and segmented, seeds removed
• 3 Florida tangelos, peeled and segmented, seeds removed
• 3 Florida tangerines, peeled and segmented, seeds removed
• 1 Florida sweet pepper, diced
• 1 large Florida avocado, peeled, pitted and diced
• 2 tablespoons seafood boil seasoning
• 1 red onion, diced
• 1 tablespoon olive oil
• 3 limes, juiced
• ½ cup fresh cilantro, chopped
• 1 bag plantain chips or tortilla chips
• Sea salt and fresh ground pepper, to taste
Preparation:
Fill a medium-sized sauce pot ¾ the way with water, and heat over medium-high.
Add the seafood seasoning to the boiling pot of water.
Add the shrimp and cook for 2 to 3 minutes or until completely done.
As soon as the shrimp are done, plunge them into an ice water bath to stop the cooking and cool them off.
When the shrimp are completely cool, strain them and put them into a medium-sized mixing bowl.
Add the citrus, sweet pepper, red onion, olive oil, lime juice, cilantro and avocado.
Season the ingredients to taste with salt and pepper.
Stir to combine ingredients.
Serve ceviche with chips.

Volvo Penta continues to push the boundaries of sustainable innovation with the launch of its new fully electric marine propulsion range, built on the proven Volvo Penta IPS platform. This is another milestone in the company’s path to deliver zero emission vehicles and vessels on land and at sea.
A New Chapter in Electric Marine Propulsion - The Volvo Penta IPS Electric (E) range is a powerful complement to the hybrid electric (H) solutions introduced earlier in 2024. Together, they offer customers a broad selection of ‘fit-for-purpose’ solutions tailored to diverse operational needs and duty cycles. In this new, fully electric marine propulsion offer, the electric motor is directly coupled to the Volvo Penta IPS driveline and available in twin, triple, or quadruple configurations. This opens possibilities for a broader range of vessels to harness the core benefits of the Volvo Penta IPS system – such as Electronic Vessel Control (EVC), forwardfacing propulsion, and outstanding maneuverability. “We have built up strong expertise based on 20 years of efficient operation with more than 40,000 Volvo Penta IPS drivelines in operation, as well as recent successful market pilots in marine electrification,” says Anna Müller, President of Volvo Penta. “Our aim with this new range is to deliver a plug and play electric propulsion solution, keeping the uniqueness of our core competence, but also designed to scale together with 3rd party integrators.”

The all-new electric (E) propulsion range - Starting in Q4 2025, Volvo Penta will roll out the IPS900E (up to 515 kW), followed by models like the IPS650E (up to 374 kW). The aim is to electrify all five drivelines in the Volvo Penta IPS range, targeting power outputs from 220 kW to 1.1 MW per driveline – scaling up to 4.5 MW for quad installations. and prolong service intervals. If one generator is offline for maintenance, others seamlessly take over, enhancing reliability. This ‘power of plenty’ approach boosts productivity and maximizes uptime.

Scalloping and Fishing the Nature Coast
Have you heard the news: The opening week of scalloping season here along the Nature Coast has started out to be the best it’s been in nearly 7 years. We’re finally back to counting our scallop hauls by the gallons instead of individual numbers and our snorkelers couldn’t be any more excited to hit the water.
Scallop Season runs through September 24th so there’s still plenty of time to get your scallop fill in this summer. For those folks have never tried it or are wanting to know what it’s all about we have numerous pages on our website that shed light on this extremely fun summer activity. out early and get back to the dock early!! Why fish all day when we can target the most optimal time frames to catch fish?
Summer time fishing here in Crystal River and Homosassa can be extremely productive when targeting the most productive fishing times of a day. Usually the sunrise and sunset portions of the day are the most productive as low light fishing leads to an increase in fish feeding activity. For those anglers that love topwater fishing (hand raised) this is the time to shine. Snook, Redfish, Speckled Trout and Tarpon are all top targets on topwaters this time of year and when the conditions are ideal Grand Slam opportunities could present themselves (catching 3-4 of these species in the same morning).
Cobia Two Ways Cobia (Ling) Rachycentron canadum or just cobia is a familiar sight in Tampa Bay all summer into late or mid October according to water temperature. In Tampa Bay they range in size from 30 inches in the flats to 48 inches around structure and wrecks. Cobia must be at least 36 inches long from the fork of the tail to be legal. Bag limit 1 person per day or a total of 2 per boat.
Looking good in 2025 I have lost and landed over 23 cobias since the beginning of April and almost every trip we have had a chance at one so maybe this could be the year. Overall,Cobia fishing inside the bay has been on a slow decline whether to pollution or storms. I don’t have the answer, but this year looksgreat, and I hope it stays this way.
Baits: Greenback sardines, threadfin sardines, blue crabs, grunts and pinfish are the baits of choice. I find an area of grass flats close to a channel or drop off. I prefer the water depth around 2 to 4 feet. I then start by chumming for the bait with a mixture of tropical fish food, menhaden oil and some salt water mixed to a cream of wheat texture. The secret to chumming is not to feed the bait but attracting them to the boat. I prefer to use green 10 foot 3/8 mesh bait net. I find the color green works best and I believe it blends better in the water and increases my catch.
Keeping the bait alive: A live well is a must to have on any boat, and if you don’t have one, portable units can be purchased at most retail tackle outlet stores. A good live well needs to be at least 26 gallons or bigger with a 700

When the Redfish migration occurs numbers are never an issues as it boils down to how much abuse does an angler want to endure before taking a break. Average numbers during a sitting can quickly hit 20, 30, even 40 fish but there are always those mornings where landing 80+ fish isn’t unheard of. Yes, some are small, but most are large averaging over the 27” breeding slot size. This fishing is an absolute blast experience and with most of these fish being released there are usually plenty of numbers to go around.

Most boats come equip with a live well system from the factory or are ready to be plumb for one. Unless you are a handy man type I suggest you find a local shop to install it-most applications require making a hole through your hull to install a pick up tube not something I am inclined to do myself.
Cobia on the flats: Ok, now we caught our baits, but what are we to do next? That’s simple: start cutting somebait (greenback sardine) in half and make a large pile on the cutting board. Start by tossing pieces in the water around the boat remember you are anchored in 3 t 4 foot of water now just wait for rays to start showing up. Southern rays or brown rays are attracted to you chumming and with them come the cobias. Remember, cobia like structure and are lazy to feed, but as the rays move in on the scent of the chum with them come the cobia. Rays stir the bottom up with their wings in order to feed and this brings up all the small shrimps and crabs and pieces of chum to the surface of the flats.
The Cobia will be just under the rays or next to them picking the pieces of bait the rays leave behind. Toss a live pinfish, greenback, shrimp or crab at them and hold on. A word of caution: leave the bail open on the reel until the cobia gets at least 20 feet from the boat before you set the hook or they will head for the nearest structure which is your boat. I have several broken rods at home to remind me of this costly mistake.
Buoy tending: The first thing that comes
to mind when someone says cobia fishing in Tampa Bay is buoy tending; the ritual of running from one buoy (channel markersrange markers) to another looking for cobia hanging around them during the slack tide periods. Cobia is a structure oriented fish that like wrecks, buoys and anything that creates a shadow line. Buoy tending is a method that works, but is expensive on the pocket book with gas prices so high. The term early bird gets the worm applies in this case, the first anglers to the buoys have the best shot at catching them.
Method: Approach up current from the marker with live bait ready to go when cobia is sighted toss up current allowing the bait to drift towards the fish rather than throwing the bait on top and spooking it. I use a large float such as a Blue Water Thunder with 3 feet of 50 pound test fluorocarbon leader and a 3/0 circle hook. Cobia can be picky eaters and some cases refuse your offer, don’t waste time run to the next buoy or range marker and start all over again.
Tackle: Flats I prefer a medium action spinning outfit with 20-pound test braided line, 40- pound fluorocarbon leader and 3/0 circle hook. Buoys a heavier outfit need either a large spinning outfit with 40-pound test braided line and 50-pound test fluorocarbon leader again 3/0 or 4/0 circle hook.

Surprise Guests and Spillway Success!
This weekend brought a surprise visit from our dear friends Amy and Darryl, who made the trip down hoping to finally meet our daughter Mia. Sadly, Mia had just flown back home to Australia on Wednesday. While the weather forecast threatened storms all weekend, we decided not to take out the boat and instead focused on land-based fishing.
Saturday evening brought a break in the weather, so we made a quick run to Billy Bones Tackle, grabbed four dozen shiners, and headed to C-24 Canal. Despite our hopes, we didn’t get so much as a nibble. Not ready to give up, we packed up and headed to one of my favorite nearby spillways.
That decision paid off! In just 45 minutes before the rain returned, Tania landed both a largemouth bass and a largemouth sleeper. Darryl pulled in a healthy fat
snook and hooked a sizeable gar, but unfortunately, it flopped off the hook before we could grab a picture. As for me… well, I reeled in my bait—a very lively shiner!
With bait still on hand, we returned to the same spillway Sunday morning around 8 a.m. Tania kicked things off with a swordspine snook just minutes into casting. We fished for about an hour before we ran out of bait, but in that time, Tania caught two swordspine snook, Darryl added another swordspine and battled a few elusive Florida gar, and I finally broke the skunk with a nice Mayan cichlid.
Every time Darryl visits, I make it my mission to put him on fish—and I’m happy to say the streak continues!

but being offshore is a lot cooler than being on land. In the ocean you get some breeze and are not locked into the humidity that is being felt inland. Mahi fishing goes hand in hand with summer in Florida. This is the time of year we hed offshore in hunt of big schools of mahis. This spring we saw a surprising amount of 20 – 50 pound mahis in Miami, but typically in the summer we see big schools of schoolie mahi. Last year there were a ton of small fish (under 20 inches – which is legal size), but thankfully this year we have been seeing mostly legal size mahis. Now that can change with every school you run into but for the most part the fish have been keepers. My advice is that if you run into a school of mostly undersized fish, leave them alone and go search for the next school. Mahi are ravenous and they inhale any bait thrown at them and the majority get gut hooked. It may be your best intention to release the smaller fish, but I can guarantee that a lot of the smaller fish that get released end up dying.

At that point from the tower, I can find the school and pitch small live bait or chunk bait at the fish in the school. Once you hook a couple of fish, leave them hooked up in the water and near the boat as this tends to keep the school around the boat. The legal size is 20 inches from the fork of tail to the head and the limit if fishing in state waters (within 3 miles from shore) is 5 fish per person and 30 fish max per boat (if there are 6 people on board). In federal water which is where most of the mahis this time of year are caught the limit is 10 fish per person and a max of 54 per vessel. To me 10 fish per person is a lot so catch what you can eat and perhaps a few more for friends. Mahi fishing is a great family trip where even the real young anglers can get in on the action.

in the summer, there has been quite a few sailfish around while fishing live baits on the edge. Besides the sailfish, there have also been quite a few kingfish, a few blackfin tunas and in the last week a ton of bonitos. Bonitos might not be good table fare, but they are hard fighting fish and beginning anglers and experienced ones can hone their angling skills fighting bonitos on light tackle.
The next fish on the list is going to be swordfish. Flat calm weather usually prevails in the summer and daytime swordfishing in calm weather is always a plus. There have been some decent swordfish caught this year, and the catches keep coming in.
So, if you want to escape the heat, set up your day of fishing offshore. Besides staying cooler, it is highly likely you will come back with some good fillets for dinner.

FLOTILLA 7-16 OFFERS SAFE BOATING CLASSES IN GULFPORT, FL, MEETS THE THIRD WEDNESDAY OF EACH MONTH.
These classes qualify the attendee for the FWC Safe Boating Card. This card is required for most people born after January 1, 1988 to legally operate a power boat with greater than 10hp motor in Florida. The one-day class includes instruction on safety equipment, boat handling, rules of the road, navigation aids, communications, trailering, legal requirements and others. Power and sailboats are covered, as well as personal watercraft. Of course, besides making a boater in compliance, the main goal of the class is to create a safer boater. Classes are offered on the second Saturday of each month. To sign up, contact Marty Richardson at (630)674-5352. Flotilla 7-16 also performs free courtesy vessel safety inspections for power and sail boats, personal watercraft, and paddle craft. The inspector will come to your location, inspect the required safety features of your vessel, and if you pass will provide a safety sticker to mount on your vessel. But the vessel owner then knows of any deficiencies to correct before having an accident or being sanctioned by the Coast Guard. A VESSEL SAFETY CHECK - STUARTDespite numerous COVID-19 restrictions, more and more boaters are taking to the water to alleviate at-home boredom while taking advantage of the open-air benefits and more pandemic-free aspects of recreational boating. But if you haven’t been out boating in a while, are your vessel’s lights operating properly? Do you have a sufficient number of life jackets for the number of passengers aboard? Is your engine’s ventilation system up to par? To get you started on a new year boating adventure, now may be a perfect time to consider getting a 2022 Vessel Safety Check (VSC) offered by certified VSC examiners from the St. Lucie River Power Squadron, also known as America’s Boating Club of Martin County. These trained VSC examiners from the local squadron will point out safety features such as minimum requirements required by the U.S. Coast Guard, examine fundamental mechanical aspects of your vessel, and answer questions how you can have more fun safely on the water. 2024 SCHEDULE FOR VESSEL SAFETY CHECKS AND BOAT
AMERICA CLASSES - The United States Coast Guard Auxiliary Clearwater Flotilla is pleased to unveil its comprehensive schedule for Vessel Safety Checks (VSC) and Boat America classes for 2024. Dedicated to promoting boating safety and education within the community, the Clearwater Flotilla continues its commitment to ensuring that local boaters are equipped with the knowledge and resources necessary for a safe and enjoyable time on the water.
Vessel Safety Checks (VSC):
Vessel Safety Checks are a crucial component of the Clearwater Flotilla’s mission to enhance boating safety. Trained and certified examiners will be available throughout the year to conduct complimentary VSCs for local boaters. These checks cover a variety of safety aspects, including life jackets, navigation lights, fire extinguishers, and other essential equipment. By participating in a VSC, boaters can ensure that their vessels meet all required safety standards, fostering a safer maritime environment for all.
Boat America Classes:
The Clearwater Flotilla is also pleased to announce the schedule for Boat America classes in 2024. These classes provide participants with a comprehensive understanding of boating safety, navigation rules, and emergency procedures. Whether you’re a seasoned boater or a newcomer to maritime activities, these classes offer valuable insights and practical knowledge that can contribute to a safer and more enjoyable boating experience. Participation in Boat America Classes is open to boaters of all experience levels, and successful completion may result in valuable discounts on boat insurance. Boat America Classes are $50 per person, including all books and materials. Upcoming 2025 Boat America Class: July 26-27: In-person; August 2324: Zoom; September 27-28: In-person.
Vessel Safety Checks: Second Saturday of each month at Seminole Boat Ramp. THE PORT ST. LUCIE ANGLERS CLUB
THURSDAY OF EACH MONTH - The Port St. Lucie Anglers Club meets on the second Thursday of each month at the Port St. Lucie Botanical Gardens 2410 SE Westmoreland
Blvd. The entrance to the facility is at the first stop light south of the intersection of Westmoreland Blvd. and Port St. Lucie Blvd. Each month we have a different topic about fishing the waters of the Treasure Coast. These informative and educational meetings will enhance your knowledge of the most productive techniques to fill you fish box and ways to ensure the conservation of this wonderful natural resource. The Club provides arrangements for Anglers to be paired up with boat owners in order to facilitate fishing opportunities. Upcoming fishing trips and Tournaments will be discussed. SARASOTA FLOTILLA 82 OF THE USCG AUXILIARY Florida law requires that any person born on or after Jan. 1, 1988, may not operate a vessel powered by a motor of 10 horsepower or greater unless such person has in his or her possession, aboard the vessel, photographic identification, a Florida boater safety identification card (or any other state’s boating card), and the registration for their vessel. Regarding the above law, which has been in effect for over a year, Flotilla 82 of the USCG Auxiliary, based in Sarasota, Florida (at Mote Marine) offers a 1-day course held on the last Saturday of each month. It starts at 9:00 am and completes at 5:00 pm. The course includes the USCG exam which, if passed, results in a Florida lifetime boating card/license. The cost for materials is $40 for the first member of a family and $10 each per additional family member. For more information, please call C. Block Island, RI takes the Grand Prize for the second consecutive year as the passionate harbor community rallies again
Camden, ME – 06/25/2025 – US Harbors (usharbors.com) has announced the winners of its 6th annual “Best Harbor” contest. Each year, voters select their favorite harbor from more than 1,400 harbors listed on the site, spanning thirty states along the Atlantic, Pacific, and Great Lakes coasts. The contest sparks friendly competition and voters show their pride, as people rally behind their favorite harbors.
This year saw a record number of votes cast for over 230 harbors, but no community rallied together like Block Island, which held onto the top award for another year.
