RS SAILING ADDS NEW DAYSAILER TO THEIR ADVENTURE RANGE:

INTRODUCING THE RS

AIRA 22

RS Sailing are proud to announce the addition of the RS Aira 22 to their cruising portfolio, as they take on the build license, distribution, marketing and sales from Aira Boats. This keelboat represents a significant step forward in RS Sailing’s strategy to make sailing more accessible to a wider audience, blending comfort, innovation, and performance in a unique, all-inclusive package.

“As we continue to grow our presence in the leisure sailing market, the RS Aira 22 embodies our commitment to expanding the sport of sailing beyond competitive racing and into the realm of family-friendly adventure,” explains RS Sailing’s Commercial Director, Michiel Geerling. For the past ten years, RS Sailing has steadily grown their offerings for leisure sailors and rental companies with boats like the RS Zest, RS Quest, RS Toura, and RS Venture, addressing the diverse needs of recreational sailors. Michiel adds: “As market interest in daysailing grew, we recognised a need to add a larger vessel to our line-up – a flagship keelboat that merges comfort, performance and accessibility. Enter the RS Aira 22!”

The RS Aira 22 draws inspiration from the daysailer tradition in the Netherlands, where families fre-quently enjoy time on the water in boats that are both practical and comfortable. “It is a nice bal-ance of sport and leisure, and, of course, we will be adding our own RS stamp on the product.”

Welcoming the RS Aira 22 into The RS Adventure Range

The original Aira 22 was born in 2018, developed by Jos Snijders Blok, founder of Aira Boats. The boat was designed for recreational sailors and gained popularity with sailing schools and rental centres in the Netherlands. As Jos prepared for retirement, he approached the RS Sailing team, to bring the Aira 22 into the RS Family and onto the world stage.

Michiel commented: “We’d been in talks with Jos for several years, and the Aira 22 has always stood out as a smart and

innovative boat. We’re thrilled to now be able to expand its reach and introduce it to a global audience. The RS Aira 22 is truly the future of accessible and enjoyable sailing. We will ensure that Jos’ legacy lives on while sharing this exceptional product with day sailors worldwide.”

RS Aira 22 Features & Performance

Whether adventuring or racing, the RS Aira 22 allows families and friends to disconnect from the pressures of the everyday and reconnect with nature. The daysailer is designed with ergonomics and safety in mind, offering a spacious cockpit, higher boom, ample storage space, and comfortable seating options, complete with cushions. The boat also features a foldable table and a retractable built-in e-propulsion electric engine, making it the perfect choice for sailors who wish to spend time on the water without the pressure of a rigid itinerary.

But what about the performance? “We often describe the Aira as a comfort-focused boat with the sleek lines of a modern sportsboat,” explains Jos. Its design features contribute to its performance capabilities. Attributes include a wide beam, a flat bottom, a wide stern, and a powerful square-top mainsail, which is a modern feature for open keelboats in this size range. Jos adds: “Many customers report, after some time sailing, that the boat performs faster than they initially expected. They’ve participated in club races, often outpacing other open keelboats and smaller cabin yachts.” Whether for family outings or for rental fleets, the RS Aira 22’s sailing qualities exceed expectations, promising to redefine the day-sailing experience.

Versatility for Recreational Sailors and Hire Centres

“There is a real need to engage more people in sailing, especially families,” explains Michiel. “We want to ensure that

sailing remains an enjoyable, accessible activity. The RS Aira 22 is something for the whole family and I can also see it being a big hit with hire centres and sailing schools around the globe. Its versatility means that one day it is a daysailer and the next day it could be a club racer. The hull design ensures effortless planing, while the 28m² gennaker elevates the boat into a powerhouse of fun! It strikes the ideal balance between comfort and performance.”

The introduction of the RS Aira 22 marks an exciting milestone in RS Sailing’s ongoing efforts to make sailing a more inclusive, enjoyable, and sustainable sport for people of all ages and backgrounds. The RS Sailing Store will also be supplying parts and spares for both new and existing customers who have purchased from Aira Boats in the past. Boating Bucket List: 10 Summer Boating Activities to Try

One of the best things about boating?

There are countless ways to enjoy it. Summer is the perfect season take full advantage—to expand your boating horizons and explore new ways make the most of your time on the water. From peaceful cruises to adrenaline-filled watersports, we’ve compiled a list of summer boating activities will add new dimensions to your time afloat.

Looking to level up your boating game this summer? Use this list as inspo for your boating bucket list; each idea is designed to help you create unforgettable boating experiences and enjoy the unique freedom that comes with being out on the water.

1. Try a New Watersport: If you’ve never tried wakeboarding, wakesurfing, or tubing, summer is the time to give it a go. These high-energy activities are a favorite for thrill-seekers and families alike. Prefer an activity that’s a little more laid back? Paddleboarding or kneeboarding can introduce a fun challenge while staying close to your boat. Watersports offer a new way to enjoy the water like never before, and with the right instruction and safety gear the learning curve is often shorter than you’d expect.

2. Plan a Sunset Cruise: Sunset hits different when you’re on the water—there’s something magical about the calm and color of a summer sunset reflected on open water. Planning an early evening cruise gives you a chance to unwind, take in the views, and maybe even catch the elusive “green flash” if the conditions are just right.

For extra ambiance, pack your favorite snacks and cue up the perfect boating playlist. A sunset cruise can be a relaxing (and romantic) scenic boating experience—and the perfect way to end the day.

3. Explore Dock and Dine Destinations: Skip the onboard snacks and dock and dine instead! This is a favorite summer boating activity for a reason. It’s an easy way to turn a casual cruise into a full-day adventure. Many waterfront towns and marinas have restaurants with transient dock space where you can tie up for a meal. From fresh seafood to local comfort food, arriving by boat always adds a little extra flavor to the dining experience. (And yes, the food really does taste better when you show up by boat.)

4. Go Snorkeling to Spot Marine Life: Clear summer waters and warm temperatures make summer the ideal time to snorkel. Grab your snorkel gear and head to a designated marine park, reef, or shallow cove to explore the world below the surface. Kids and adults alike will enjoy discovering fish, shells, and underwater habitats up close. Just be sure to follow local rules and guidelines to protect fragile ecosystems while you explore.

5. Rent a Sailboat for the Day: If you’re used to powerboats, sailing offers a different connection to the water. It’s a whole new vibe— slower, quieter and as much about the journey as the destination. Consider renting a small sailboat or joining a crewed charter for a few hours. It’s a great way to learn the ropes without committing

to ownership. You’ll get a feel for harnessing the wind, reading the water differently, and slowing down to enjoy the journey.

6. Take a Boating Safety Course: Here’s the thing about boating—there’s always something to learn, regardless of your level of experience. A certified boating safety course not only builds your knowledge but also boosts your confidence. Think of boating education as a way to empower yourself to become the kind of captain everyone enjoys riding with. Many states require safety certification for boaters, and online or inperson courses are widely available. Whether you take one online from your couch or show up in person, you’ll walk away knowing things that could save your day (or someone else’s). Completing one should be a key item on your summer boating bucket list.

7. Go Boat Camping: Sleep under the stars on the water? Yes, it’s a thing, and it’s amazing. Boat camping offers an immersive overnight experience for boaters looking for a deeper connection with the water. Spending the night onboard under the stars is a peaceful change of pace. Be sure to pack sleeping gear, navigation tools, and a few extra comforts for the best possible outing.

8. Attend a Concert by Boat: Looking for uniquely nautical summer event? Many lakeside and riverside venues host live music events that you can watch and hear from the water. Some marinas even feature floating stages or waterfront music nights where you can enjoy the show without ever leaving your boat. Check

your local boating calendar; this is one of the most entertaining summer boating experiences out there.

9. Go Fishing: Relax or Compete: Fishing is a classic boating activity that offers everything from tranquil solitude to competitive thrills. Whether you prefer casting a line at sunrise in a quiet cove or joining a local tournament, fishing is a great way to connect with the water and the outdoors. It’s easy to tailor this activity to your crew; kids can learn the basics with simple setups, while experienced anglers can chase after bigger catches with more advanced gear— or even try night fishing.

10. Host a Raft-Up with Friends: A raft-up is a social gathering where multiple boats tie together to create a hangout on the water. In other words, a floating block party. It’s a great way to meet up with fellow boaters, share food, swap stories, and enjoy the day anchored in a scenic cove or near a sandbar. Keep it casual with just two or three boats, or coordinate a larger event with a group. Floaties, music, and snacks make it even more fun, and it’s a perfect setting for building community on the water.

Make the Most of Your Boating Season: Your boating bucket list doesn’t need to be filled with far-off adventures—some of the most meaningful experiences happen when you try something new, even close to home. These summer boating activities are perfect for adding variety, fun, and learning to your time on the water. Now it’s time get out there, make some memories, and soak up every minute on deck.

Why the Gulf of America Boundary Extends 9 Nautical

When boating along the Florida coast, it’s essential to understand the boundaries of state waters— especially when it comes to rules surrounding sewage discharge. For most of the U.S., state waters typically extend 3 nautical miles from shore. However, if you’re navigating the Gulf of America off Florida or Texas, that boundary extends to 3 leagues which is roughly 9 nautical miles. So, why the boundary difference? And what does it mean for boaters?

A Look at the History

The 3 league (9 nautical mile) boundary for Florida’s Gulf waters has deep historical roots. Before Florida became a state, Spain claimed these waters; when Florida joined the Union in 1845, this boundary remained intact. The federal government later reaffirmed this claim in 1960 with a key court case tied to the Submerged Lands Act, which clarified that Florida’s jurisdiction extends 3 leagues (9 nautical miles) into the Gulf.

Similarly, Texas enjoys the same 9-nautical-mile boundary, thanks to its unique history. Before becoming a state, Texas was an independent republic after gaining independence from Mexico in 1836. As an independent republic its statues established a 3-league (9 nautical mile) boundary which the

U.S. ratified when Texas was admitted to the Union in 1845.

Why This Matters for Boaters

These extended boundaries aren’t just a historical footnote— they have real implications for today’s boaters. As a boater, it’s important to remember that it’s illegal to discharge untreated sewage in state waters. In the Gulf of America, that means within 9 nautical miles of Florida and Texas shores.

Navigating the Rules

As a responsible boater, it’s crucial to know where state waters end, and federal waters begin. If you’re 9 nautical miles or less from the coasts of Florida or Texas in the Gulf, be sure to use a holding tank and pump-out facility for your boat’s sewage. On Florida’s Atlantic coast and in most other coastal U.S. states, this boundary is 3 nautical miles, so stay mindful of where you are and the specific regulations that apply.

By staying informed, you can help protect our waters and ensure that boating remains a fun and safe activity for everyone. In Florida, to find a pumpout that works download the Pumpout Nav app, on iOS and Android devices.

A VESSEL SAFETY CHECK - STUART -

Despite numerous COVID-19 restrictions, more and more boaters are taking to the water to alleviate at-home boredom while taking advantage of the open-air benefits and more pandemic-free aspects of recreational boating. But if you haven’t been out boating in a while, are your vessel’s lights operating properly? Do you have a sufficient number of life jackets for the number of passengers aboard? Is your engine’s ventilation system up to par? To get you started on a new year boating adventure, now may be a perfect time to consider getting a 2022 Vessel Safety Check (VSC) offered by certified VSC examiners from the St. Lucie River Power Squadron, also known as America’s Boating Club of Martin County. These trained VSC examiners from the local squadron will point out safety features such as minimum requirements required by the U.S. Coast Guard, examine fundamental mechanical aspects of your vessel, and answer questions how you can have more fun safely on the water. These are just a few of the many discussion points covered in this voluntary examination. As an added plus, Vessel Safety Checks are free to boat owners. And if you don’t “pass muster” with the thorough examination, the summary report is yours and yours alone. No record of any possible deficiencies will be reported to the USCG, state agency or any other authority. Want to know more about this complimentary Vessel Safety Check program? Contact Peter Burns at (772) 486-2684 or burnspet@aol.com. St. Lucie River Power Squadron, one of more than 300 squadrons nationwide, also offers safe boating classes to the public. with Captain Taylor Cowieson

Let’s go fishing in Bradenton Florida July and August are great months to book a fishing charter in Bradenton and Anna Maria Island Florida. The traffic is lighter as it is not prime time tourist season, and the fishing is awesome. Now that the weather is warming for summer we try to get out in the morning and back in before it gets hot in the midafternoons.

Tarpon are here and they are hungry. This is prime time to catch a full-grown tarpon in Tampa Bay. The migratory fish are showing up more and more every day especially as we get closer to the full moon. They are all over Tampa Bay and in all the major passes in our area from Sarasota north to St Pete. The fish also like to hangout around the Sunshine Skyway Bridge pilings and rock piles. Fishing around the Skyway for Tarpon also yields bycatch such as gag grouper, mangrove snapper, a variety of small sharks, Spanish mackerel, cobia, and more! When conditions are right this can add up to be an actionpacked day. The tarpon also like to frequent the edges of the sandbars in Tampa Bay and out around Egmont Key. On our fishing charters when

targeting tarpon we like to use live and fresh dead threadfin herring and small blue and pass crabs.

The mangrove snapper bite is starting to get better as the water warms in Tampa Bay. The artificial reefs in the bay, the bridges, and deeper mangrove edges with good current flowing are good areas to target these tasty fish. The minimum size limit is ten inches long and you can harvest five fish per person. The snapper has great eyesight so scaling down the leader to twenty pound or even fifteen pound can trigger more bites. Using live pilchards, cut dead pilchards, and live or dead shrimp are great baits to target mangrove snapper in Tampa Bay.

West Central Florida

There has been a lot of snook coming out of the Manatee River and heading towards the passes and beaches to spawn this summer. Snook are catch and release during the summer but provide great action on our fishing charters. They can get quite large frequently over thirty inches long and upwards of ten pounds. They are great fun on light spinning gear and test your angling abilities. On our fishing charters

with Captain Rick Grassett

This is my favorite time to fly fish for tarpon, which should still be a good option in the coastal gulf this month. Spin anglers will do best by setting up in travel lanes and drifting live baits under floats while staying ready to sight cast to fish that may pop up with no notice. The tactics are the same as earlier in the season, except July fish are usually more aggressive. Tarpon will thin out in the coastal gulf towards the end of the month as they begin to move to inside waters where they can be targeted with flies, a variety of DOA lures or live bait.

In addition to tarpon, you might find tripletail or cobia in the coastal gulf this month. You might find cobia swimming with tarpon or cruising bars in shallow water along the beach. You can use your tarpon fly or spin tackle for cobia, but a medium spinning outfit or an 8 to 9-weight fly rod will be better suited for tripletail, which I occasionally run into this time of year, either around a navigational marker or floating debris.

Catch and release snook fishing in the ICW at night or in the surf should also be good during July. You’ll find snook in the surf, where you can walk along the beach and sight cast to them with flies or

lures. Spin anglers should do well fishing lighted docks and bridges in the ICW with live bait, CAL jigs with shad tails or jerk worms or DOA shrimp. Fly anglers should do well with clear intermediate sink tip lines and wide profile flies, such as Lefty’s Deceiver or EP flies, since larger baitfish may be more predominant. Docks and bridges close to passes should be the best ones.

JULY 7-10, 2025: Del Brown Permit Tournament, Sugarloaf Key. www.delbrown.com

when targeting snook we like to use live pilchards and pinfish.

If you are looking for a fishing charter in the Bradenton/ Anna Maria Island area, give me a call or text at 813220-8725. You can also book online directly through my website at onamissionfishing. com. On our fishing charters we fish in Tampa Bay and Sarasota Bay. We fish with light tackle and live bait. I catch bait early in the morning before picking up customers for our fishing charter. I offer very family friendly trips and also cater to the pros. We are just a short thirty-minute drive north from Sarasota and Siesta Key. We are about the same distance from St Petersburg just over the famous Sunshine Skyway Bridge.

West Central Florida Bradenton, Florida Captain Taylor Cowieson On a Mission Fishing Charters - 813-220-8725 www.onamissionfishing.com

You’ll find reds very active in shallow water this month. They should form large schools towards the end of the month. Look for them along the edges of bars or in potholes when the tide is low or along mangrove shorelines and around oyster bars when the tide is high. You’ll also find big trout in many of the same areas where you find reds, but the bite for big trout is usually best early or late in the day. In my opinion it’s important to protect larger trout, which are usually female breeders.

I like to drift deep grass flats and cast ahead of my drift with jigs, flies or live shrimp to find trout. A drift anchor will slow your drift to a more manageable speed if it’s windy. Look for birds or baitfish on the surface to find fish.

You may also find Spanish mackerel, blues, pompano and more mixed with trout on deep grass flats. Flats close to passes or on points that get good tidal flow are usually the most productive.

There are lots of options this month; tarpon, snook and more. You’ll want to fish early in the day in shallow water due to heat. Our natural resources are under constant pressure from red tides fueled by industrial, agricultural and residential runoff, toxic spills and discharges, freezes, increasing fishing pressure and habitat loss and degradation, please limit your kill, don’t kill your limit!

Happy July 4th! The palm beaches and Jupiter will be red hot! A plethora of species for anglers to target snook, tarpon, sharks, and jacks provide explosive action.

Snook anglers can target beaches, inlets and the ICW. The snook will school up in local inlets, along deep channels and beach fronts. Live bait schools are prevalent just about everywhere you look. Greenies, bait of choice for snook but pinfish and mullet will get the bite as well. DOA lures work great for the snook along the beaches, nothing beats a DOA C.A.L. 3” shad tail in bayou tiger or pearl color. Rapala twitchin mullet baits also a great bait while fishing the beaches or drop offs were snook are lurking. The average size of the snook ranges from 5 to 30 pounds.

Silver king action will be explosive. The tarpon can be found lurking along the beaches and near deep channels. Tarpon school up, early morning risers get the best bite. Tarpon on the beach range from 50 to 130 pounds. The silver kings gathering in the inlet and Icw are willing to devour any greenie in their path, but don’t shy away from artificial baits. terror eyz in root beer or pearl provoke drag screaming action.

The ICW will offer great fishing for big jacks, sharks, bluefish and even some big triple tail. Docks, seawalls, and mangrove shorelines great areas to locate fish. Look for bait fish in the area as tell tale sign, predator fish are near by. Live baits and Rapala skitter walks or DOA Terror Eyz will get your drag screaming.

Tarpon fishing the past week has been excellent, anglers are enjoying a wide range and size 5 to 80 pound fish have been willing to eat. Live bait drifted with the tide, create the best strikes. Artificial enthusiast Doa terror eyz awesome bait to entice the silver King. Tarpon fishing along the beaches is usually excellent this time of year, but it has been tough at times to locate fish due to the choppy conditions along with clumps of seaweed.

The snook fishing has been great along deep passes, beaches, docks and sea walls. Live bait presented to them will create strikes.

Sight casting to snook along the beaches is an awesome way to get a rod

How to Choose the Best Charter Boat?

It is very common to get a call, and the first thing asked is what do you catch today, Captain? Vetting a captain is extremely important in choosing who you will pick to provide the services and goals you want to accomplish while charter fishing.

Asking what someone caught today is irrelevant, some days are tough, some are extremely easy. (We love the easy days!) Choosing a fishing charter should come down to long-term success and the boats’ commitment to doing everything possible to get their clients on the bite.

Some questions will give you a better idea of who you will be spending the day with and the attitude of the guide. Some good questions to ask are:

I am coming these dates and would like to catch “a fish”, is this a good time to catch this species? “A knowledgeable captain will be able to assist you with

past experiences from what was running in prior years those dates”

If the day is not going to plan, do you have a backup? “Most fishing guides always have a back up plan. Even if clients swear, they only want to do one type of fishing, most of the time patience run thin if the bite is off and we like to have an alternative plan to bend the rod”

If the weather is bad what is your cancelation policy? “Every client is different when it comes to what he or she can handle for wave heights. The last thing you want to do is get forced onto a boat when the seas are terrible and there is bad weather approaching. Knowing how deposits will be returned in case of weather and conditions should be known before booking”

What has been being caught recently in Key West?

“Captains should know what the other boats have been catching and what they have been doing. Some days we can be the top producer, others we can struggle. No one

can be found in the local inlets, live baits worked on the bottom, will get you hooked up.

When the tarpon and snook will not cooperate, there are plenty of mutton snapper, triple tail, jacks, drum, sharks, mackerel and many other species willing to strike. Live bait and Doa 3 inch shad tail excellent bait to present to fish along docks, drop offs and mangrove shorelines.

Well that is the fishing report hope you all enjoyed. Remember you can’t catch them from the couch, so get out there and get hooked up. Tight Lines!

to catching the most fish”

Some Questions not to ask or be weary if they are offered:

Do you guarantee fish? “I would never go out with a fishing charter that said they would guarantee me fish, especially a target species. Somehow there is a loophole in this, and the last thing anyone wants to hear is, “Should have been here yesterday!”

By asking some of these questions, you may find that the guide will not suit you well with personality, drive, or experience. Having a short conversation with the guide when picking a fishing charter can help you decide the best charter to pick in Key West or anywhere else you may want to fish.

Kathy Sinnett Honored with 2025 BoatUS/ NWSA Leadership in Women’s Sailing Award

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla., June 9, 2024 – Since 1999, the BoatUS/NWSA Leadership in Women’s Sailing Award has recognized extraordinary women who have inspired, educated and enriched the lives of women through sailing. This year’s honoree, Kathy Sinnett of Daytona Beach, Florida, continues the tradition in epitomizing the exceptional skill, leadership, and dedication to promoting opportunities for women to embrace the joy and challenge of the sport of sailing. Sinnett accepted the award Saturday at the 2025 National Women’s Sailing Association Conference presented by American Sailing in St. Petersburg, Florida.

Sinnett grew up on the water, first racing Snipes with her father, then teaching and racing at the University of Wisconsin. Her career decision to move to Alaska did not tamp down her desire to sail. “Who cares if the water is frozen? I’m from Wisconsin,” she offers as she shares her sailing adventures aboard her DN iceboat up the Kuskokwim River.

After accepting a position as a public health nurse in Ketchikan, Alaska, Sinnet found a spot on an allwomen’s keelboat on which she shared her knowledge while honing her leadership in Alaska’s wet, cold and challenging environment.

Club (SHYC) in Stonington, Connecticut, and the new group, Windward Women at Halifax Sailing Association in Daytona Beach, Florida. Through a networking event she organized, Sinnet recruited Windward Women and the St. Augustine Sailing Sisters to join and strengthen the Florida Women’s Sailing Association.

In 2019, Sinnett received the Tucker and Sandy Bragdon Trophy for her substantial contributions to SHYC’s sailing programs, and in 2020, she was presented with the George Shuck Award for her leadership at the club. She currently holds a position on the leadership team of the Halifax Sailing Association.

“We grow women’s competence and confidence on the water in all the groups while strengthening connections between us,” Sinnet said proudly. “Our focus is not only on sailing but also on environmental issues and giving back to our community.”

NWSA President Debby Grimm remarked, “Kathy has a positive and encouraging nature to lead with enthusiasm while teaching . Her ‘can-do’ attitude makes others ask how to be involved.”

Throughout the years moving coast to coast as a U.S. Coast Guard spouse, Sinnet has shown leadership by creating opportunities for connection with other women through sailing and racing on dinghies, keelboats and offshore boats. She spearheaded the long-running Ideal Women Sailing Program at the Stonington Harbor Yacht

“We congratulate Kathy for this well-deserved honor,” said BoatUS Vice President Heather Lougheed. “BoatUS is proud to partner with NWSA to get the word out to aspiring women sailors that this healthy lifetime sport can be rewarding and life-enriching.”
