UNITED STATES COAST GUARD FLOTILLA 7-16 OFFERS SAFE BOATING CLASSES IN GULFPORT, FL, MEETS THE THIRD WEDNESDAY OF EACH MONTH. These classes qualify the attendee for the FWC Safe Boating Card. This card is required for most people born after January 1, 1988 to legally operate a power boat with greater than 10hp motor in Florida. The one-day class includes instruction on safety equipment, boat handling, rules of the road, navigation aids, communications, trailering, legal requirements and others. Power and sailboats are covered, as well as personal watercraft. Of course, besides making a boater in compliance, the main goal of the class is to create a safer boater. Classes are offered on the second Saturday of each month. To sign up, contact Marty Richardson at (630)674-5352. Flotilla 7-16 also performs free courtesy vessel safety inspections for power and sail boats, personal watercraft, and paddle craft. The inspector will come to your location, inspect the required safety features of your vessel, and if you pass will provide a safety sticker to mount on your vessel. The inspection is a courtesy, so no action is taken if problems are found. But the vessel owner then knows of any deficiencies to correct before having an accident or being sanctioned by the Coast Guard. - STUARTDespite numerous COVID-19 restrictions, more and more boaters are taking to the water to alleviate at-home boredom while taking advantage of the open-air benefits and more pandemic-free aspects of recreational boating. But if you haven’t been out boating in a while, are your vessel’s lights operating properly? Do you have a sufficient number of life jackets for the number of passengers aboard? Is your engine’s ventilation system up to par? To get you started on a new year boating adventure, now may be a perfect time to consider getting a 2022 Vessel Safety Check (VSC) offered by certified VSC examiners from the St. Lucie River Power Squadron, also known as America’s Boating Club of Martin County. These trained VSC examiners from the local squadron will point out safety features such as minimum requirements required by the U.S. Coast Guard, examine fundamental mechanical aspects of your vessel, and answer questions how you can have more fun safely on the water. These are just a few of the many discussion points covered in this voluntary examination. As an added plus, Vessel Safety Checks are free to boat owners. And if you don’t “pass muster” with the thorough examination, the summary report is yours and yours alone. VESSEL SAFETY CHECKS AND SAFE BOATING CLASSES - A Vessel Safety Check is a complimentary check of your boat conducted by members of the Auxiliary, confirming that it meets both federal and state requirements for safety. No citations are issued, and the results of the safety check are not reported to any enforcement agency, but a decal is awarded to display when the vessel has passed the examination. The Vessel Safety Check (VSC) is performed at your boat, whether in a slip, at the launch ramp, or in your driveway, by a certified Vessel Examiner, at a mutually-convenient time. It usually takes 20-45 minutes, depending on the size of your boat. After successful inspection you are awarded a vessel safety check sticker which is affixed to your vessel near your state registration sticker. FLORIDA BOATER’S ID CARD - Don’t forget that “Anyone born on or after January 1, 1988 is required to either have successfully completed a National Association of State Boating Law Administrators (NASBLA) approved boating education course or have passed a course equivalency or temporary certificate examination and have in their possession a boating education ID card and a photo identification card before operating a vessel with a motor of 10 HP or more in Florida.” Identification cards for persons completing the course or the equivalency exam are good for a lifetime. Temporary Certificate exams are made available to the public through contractors. The temporary certificate is valid for 12 months from the issue date. AMERICA CLASSES - The United States Coast Guard Auxiliary Clearwater Flotilla is pleased to unveil its comprehensive schedule for Vessel Safety Checks (VSC) and Boat America classes for 2024. Dedicated to promoting boating safety and education within the community, the Clearwater Flotilla continues its commitment to ensuring that local boaters are equipped with the knowledge and resources necessary for a safe and enjoyable time on the water.
Vessel Safety Checks (VSC):
Vessel Safety Checks are a crucial component of the Clearwater Flotilla’s mission to enhance boating safety. Trained and certified examiners will be available throughout the year to conduct complimentary VSCs for local boaters. These checks cover a variety of safety aspects, including life jackets, navigation lights, fire extinguishers, and other essential equipment. By participating in a VSC, boaters can ensure that their vessels meet all required safety standards, fostering a safer maritime environment for all.
Boat America Classes:
The Clearwater Flotilla is also pleased to announce the schedule for Boat America classes in 2024. These classes provide participants with a comprehensive understanding of boating safety, navigation rules, and emergency procedures. Whether you’re a seasoned boater or a newcomer to maritime activities, these classes offer valuable insights and practical knowledge that can contribute to a safer and more enjoyable boating experience. Participation in Boat America Classes is open to boaters of all experience levels, and successful completion may result in valuable discounts on boat insurance. SARASOTA FLOTILLA 82 OF THE USCG AUXILIARY Florida law requires that any person born on or after Jan. 1, 1988, may not operate a vessel powered by a motor of 10 horsepower or greater unless such person has in his or her possession, aboard the vessel, photographic identification, a Florida boater safety identification card (or any other state’s boating card), and the registration for their vessel. Regarding the above law, which has been in effect for over a year, Flotilla 82 of the USCG Auxiliary, based in Sarasota, Florida (at Mote Marine) offers a 1-day course held on the last Saturday of each month. It starts at 9:00 am and completes at 5:00 pm. The course includes the USCG exam which, if passed, results in a Florida lifetime boating card/license. On Saturday, May 24, 2025, the Reel Blessed Chapter of Fishing’s Future held our 3rd event of the year at Indian Riverside Park. This event is one of my favorites, as it is a saltwater event. We had 37 participants registered, as well as 12 volunteers signed up, so it was bound to be a great day.
I loaded the car on Friday evening, so we are ready to go and less likely to forget anything. Tania and I were up bright and early on Saturday morning and arrived at Billy Bones by 7:00 a.m., where I picked up the bait for our event. It was nice of Billy Bones to set aside 20 dozen shrimp to ensure we had enough bait for our event.
Tania needed to pick up the food from Fit Fixn’s at 10:00 am, so she headed home after we unloaded the car to ensure an on-time pickup. We arrived at Indian Riverside Park at about 7:30 am. To start setting up. Since we were using the pavilions at the park and didn’t have to set up our canopy and tables, it took only 30 minutes to prepare for the families to arrive. FWC Officer Peters also joined us at the event. I feel it’s good to have the first interaction with law enforcement under favorable circumstances.
Since we only had 17 participants, we delayed the start time by about 10 minutes to see if more would arrive. At 9:10 am, we opened our event with a prayer. I then introduced the Reel Blessed Chapter of Fishing’s Future and shared our mission, since this was nearly everyone’s first event with the Reel Blessed Chapter of Fishing’s Future. Introducing all our volunteers. I then discussed our sponsors so that the families would know who was responsible for helping make this event
possible at no charge to them.
Once we had finished the introductions and discussed water safety, I divided the families into groups and then sent them to their respective stations. Because it was getting very hot and humid, we abbreviated our stations to get fishing before everyone became too hot and tired.
We spent the next hour preparing the families for their fishing expedition. We finished up all the stations around 10:00 a.m. Next, we gathered all the families and provided them with the ground rules for fishing on the pier. At this point, all the families and the volunteers went fishing.
All the families seemed to enjoy fishing, even though the fish weren’t biting. I could tell the heat was starting to get to the families, so I told everyone we would wrap it up at 11:30. This turned out to be a good decision, as right about 11:30 a.m., all the food was set up for lunch.
Overall, the fishing was slow. We only caught a handful of fish, mostly snapper, but we also had some extraordinary catches. One of the younger boys, who was autistic, landed a decent-sized blue runner on light tackle. By the time the fishing was over, I was sad that most of the families had not caught anything, but they were all good sports and still had a great time.
Once we were all off the dock and back at the pavilions, I gathered the families to bless our meal. As with the other events, I asked if anyone would like to bless the

The inlets and beaches are great areas to target snook as they begin to spawn. Local inlets will offer plenty of snook and tarpon target. Live baits Rapala x raps DOA C.A.L. 4” jerk baits excellent choices for snook. DOA Bait busters great bait for target snook along drop offs and channels. Be sure to check the tides and locate good current for best ares to hook up with snook.
Anglers targeting tarpon can expect fantastic action along the beaches and inside the inlets. Tarpon can be seen rolling on the surface early in the morning as the sun is rising. DOA Bait busters and DOA terror eyz, worked near the bottom will get the silver kings chewing. Be sure to work in front of tarpon pods leading the fish, this helps not to spook the pod of tarpon. Do this and you will get your drag screaming.
The docks, seawalls and drop offs will hold plenty of fish for anglers. Snook, tarpon, jacks, drum and tripletail can all be targeted. For fly fisherman this offers steady action as live chumming helps bring the predators boat side. Fly fishing is a blast and can be taught to novice anglers, whether it’s a 1 pound jack to a 20 pound tarpon, anglers can experience the thrill of fly fishing.
Heat is on and so is the bite for anglers inshore and nearshore. Longer days allow for anglers to target fish longer, morning and evening provide cooler temperatures.
Summer patterns for snook are in effect. Passes, beaches, docks and mangrove shorelines are holding fish and bait. Bait schools great sign snook are in vicinity. Live baits, DOA 3” shad tail and Rapala x raps go to baits.
Tarpon fishing is heating up! Silver kings are roaming channels, sea walls and beaches. Anglers can have great success targeting tarpon on both sides of tide using live baits. Artificial enthusiasts DOA terror eyz and Rapala x raps great baits to get the silver kings striking.
Schooling Jack crevalle are crashing boat schools along mangroves and docks. The jacks are ranging in size from 1 to 20 pounds. Jacks will strike live bait and DOA shad tail Rapala skitter walks. Sharks are abundant following the schools of jacks, anglers enjoy the drag screaming runs sharks provide. Black tips, bulls, lemons and nurse sharks are willing to eat.

Fit Fixn’s provided us with an excellent and healthy meal. We had a salad, chicken, rice, and black bean vegetable melody. This was the third year we used Fit Fixin’s, and it was another big hit.
After lunch, we did a trash pick-up. We made it a little competition, and the top kid would get a prize. The kids were so excited to go pick up the trash. We picked up a lot of trash, and the winner received a Reel Blessed hat as well as a tackle bag. The rest of the kids got a hat. We were happy to see the kids excited about cleaning up the environment.
We concluded our event in the same manner as we have all our other events. We asked the kids to thank the parent or guardian who brought them to the event, tell them they love them, and hug them. This is one of our favorite parts of the events. We even had a mother say she doesn’t hear that from her daughter
