Sea Tow Services International, Inc.

Sea Tow® has been the leader in on-water assistance for 40+ years. With boats located in 500+ ports nationwide, Sea TowCaptains are standingby 24/7. No one ever plans on needing help on the water, so when the unexpected happens, having an annual boat towing membership is so important.

A huge misconception among boaters is that a Sea Tow membership is part of a boat insurance policy, which is not the case. Sea Tow membership is never part of an insurance policy. Sea Tow is independent, which meansnever submitting insurance claims for service, no unexpected out-ofpocket costs, and no confusion on coverage.

How does membership differ from boat insurance?

A Sea Tow membership is not insurance. Your local Sea Tow Captain will come to your aid when things go wrong – provide a tow, deliver fuel or jump start your battery so you can get back on your way. Helping to ensure your safety is a job that we take seriously.

Boat insurance is intended to protect significant investments –your boat, electronics, and gear, becausedisasters strike when you

least expect it. It gives you the means to repair or replace the boat you’ve worked so hard to acquire.

Maintaining a Sea Tow membership as well as a boat insurance policy makes sense –because the two are intended to work together to ensure your boating needs are covered in unforeseen situations.

What benefits does Sea Tow membership provide that towing coverage bundled with insurance does not?

Sea Tow is simple – you know what you’re covered for with no fine print and no claims to file for the service that you receive. Sea Tow members have Peace of Mind on the Water™ because they know who is coming to help and when, plus so much more:

• 24/7 priority service nationwide

• Unlimited towing with no distance or dollar limits in the member’s home area

• Service for every boat a member owns, rents, or bareboat charters

• Unmatched offshore coverage

• Scheduled tow to a repair facility or haul-out ramp from the vessel’s home port on all covered vessels

• Fuel and oil/parts delivery, jump starts, disentanglements, covered

ungroundings, and more

• Local knowledge, navigation and referrals, troubleshooting, tides, and weather

• Member-only savings on boating products and services through the Sea Tow Savings Club™

It’s not a question of IF, it’s a question of WHEN boaters will need assistance. When you’restuckon the water, you don’t just want coverage – you want the BEST coverage –which means an annual Sea Tow membership.

For less than $21/month a Sea Tow membership will be the best investment you make on your boat every year. Become a member today.

How to Prepare Your Boat for a Hurricane: Before & After

Learning how to prepare for a hurricane can be intimidating and a little bit frightening, especially in a midst of a storm approaching. If you own a boat anywhere along the East Coast or the along the shores of the Gulf of Mexico, you’ll likely have to deal with some direct or indirect effects associated with a hurricane. Being proactive and getting prepared before the hurricane or tropical storm hits is extremely important—not only for the safety of you and your loved ones, but also for the safety of your boat. In this post, we’ll explain how you can prepare yourself and your boat for an impending hurricane. We’ll also share tips for safety and boat recovery after a hurricane hits.

Hurricane Preparedness Checklist for Boat Owners

• Stay informed and up-to-date on weather reports.

• Trailer your boat, and head inland to a safer region that is out of reach from the storm.

• If you can’t transport your boat out of the area, then prepare to batten down the hatches.

• Remove anything that’s not permanently part of the boat.

• Apply extra fenders and double up on your normal dock line usage.

• Check that all hatches and portholes are secure.

• Drop an anchor fore and aft.

• Evacuate to a safe location.

4 Tips for Hurricane Safety: How to Prepare Your Boat

1. Stay Informed: One of the reasons that boaters love being out on the water is that it helps them destress and get away from life’s everyday troubles. However, if you live an area that’s exposed to hurricanes (or other extreme weather conditions), you need to be aware of upcoming storms. To stay updated on upcoming storm systems, download a reliable weather app, such as The Weather Channel, Dark Sky Weather, or AccuWeather. Of all the things you can do to keep safe when you’re in the path of a hurricane, advance warning is, by far, the most effective.

2. Get Out Of The Way: For most recreational powerboats, many times the best solution is to pull the vessel and head inland. This reduces the impact of the initial storm surge and the accompanying rain and hurricane force wind. The sooner you do this the better, because there will be many people who either don’t or can’t move their boats in advance. They will be the ones jammed onto back roads and highways when mandatory evacuation orders are issued.

3. Batten Down The Hatches: For boats that can’t be moved, it’s time to go old-school mariner and batten down those hatches. That phrase has survived modern times because it precisely describes what you need to do in a crisis situation.

First, remove anything that’s not permanently part of the boat. That means

cushions, toasters, life jackets, curtain rods and anything else that would fall off if the boat gets sideways. If you leave these items aboard, you not only risk losing them for good, but you could create dangerous projectiles for anyone or anything nearby during the worst parts of the storm.

Use plenty of extra fenders, used tires, or anything else that will absorb impact and lash them to the boat. Quadruple your normal line usage, springing to any and all potential contact points. Check that all hatches and portholes are secure and detach or cover windscreens.

Drop an anchor fore and aft and ensure they’re well set.

4. Don’t Try To “Ride” Out the Storm: When a storm is approaching, some boaters try to ride out the storm on their boat in open water. Although you may think this sounds better than evacuating or securing your boat, this won’t help you or your boat stay safe during hurricane winds and rain.

Although as boaters, our boats become an important part of our lifestyles and identities, they aren’t worth our safety. They can always be replaced, and you should put your personal safety first in the event of a hurricane.

9 Post-Hurricane Safety Tips for Boaters

• Once the hurricane has passed, it’s time to move into recovery mode. Below, you’ll find tips for safely recovering your boat and the necessary next steps you should take.

• Follow Flood Warnings: Don’t drive in flooded waters or ignore local flood advisories. Although it’s understandable that you want to start repairing your boat, it’s crucial that you do so safely. Once you’re cleared to go check on your boat, be aware of fallen power lines, debris, and other obstacles in your path.

• Be Careful in Floodwater: If you have to be in floodwater, it’s crucial to wear a life jacket at all times. As you likely know, having a life jacket on your boat is crucial, so you should have it on-hand anyways.

• Wash Your Hands and Treat Injuries Immediately: Floodwater can contain dangerous bacteria and chemicals that may put your health in danger. If you’re exposed to

floodwater, wash your hands thoroughly with soap and clean water. In addition, if you suffer any wounds or injuries, get them treated as soon as possible.

• Review Your Boat Insurance Policy: Most likely, you have some type of boat insurance policy in place. These policies typically cover boat damage caused by a hurricane, so you can rest easy. However, it’s still important to review your insurance policy to fully understand what your policy covers.

• Gather Necessary Supplies: As you prepare to repair and clean your boat after a storm, you should gather supplies that will make the process easier. These items include trash bags to dispose of debris, boots and gloves to move about your boat, duct tape to secure any cracks or broken parts, and cleaning supplies.

• Assess Your Boat for Damages: Before you check out your boat, confirm that your marina is open, docks are fixed, and that it is safe to visit. Once you receive confirmation, check on your boat as soon as possible. Remember to bring proof of boat ownership, as some marinas deal with looters after a hurricane.

• Immediately Remove Moisture and Dirt: To avoid further issues, begin removing any mud,

moisture, and debris from the boat. This will prevent mold and permanent damage.

• Check the Boat for Structural Damage, Leaks, and System Issues: Next, you should check the bilge to ensure that the boat hasn’t experienced any underwater damage, and identify any problems with the engine fuel systems, bilge pump, electronic systems, and other parts of the boat. Although you may be able to fix some issues yourself, it’s best to record damage for your insurance company.

• Preparing for the Worst: How to Handle a Sunk or Beached Boat: No boater wants to prepare for it, but you should consider how you’ll handle an unsalvageable or extremely damaged boat. Again, all damage should be documented for your insurance company, and you should contact them to determine next steps.

Conclusion Preparing for hurricane season isn’t a fun topic for boaters, but it’s one that is crucial to keep in mind. Protecting your boat, and yourself, is paramount, and you’ll have peace of mind if you have a plan in place for before and after the storm.

STORM PREPAREDNESS

Here is a list of the many things to consider before, during and after a storm.

PREPARE BEFORE THE STORM ARRIVES

• Review your boat insurance policy carefully to know if you are required to take action in order to make a claim valid.

• If you keep your boat at a marina, find out what their storm policy is and take the proper steps.

• If you are going to move your boat, determine where ahead of time.

• Learn the storm surge history and elevation of your area.

• Learn safe routes inland and make plans of where you will evacuate to.

• Take inventory of the property on your boat and video if possible. Plan what will be removed from the boat and what will stay.

• Keep all legal documents such as registration, insurance policy, marina rental agreement, etc. in one secure and dry container away from the vessel.

WHEN A HURRICANE WATCH IS ISSUED

A watch means hurricane conditions pose a possible threat to the watch area within 36-hours.

• Frequently monitor radio, TV, NOAA Weather Radio, and/or hurricane hotline telephone numbers for official bulletins of the storm’s progress.

• Ensure access to emergency equipment such as first aid kit, flashlights, and/or battery-powered radios.

• Move boats on trailers close to a building. Weigh them down. Lash securely to the trailer and use tie-downs to anchor the trailer.

• Anchored boats should be tied high, using a half hitch knot (loop knots slip). Anchor rigging should consist of new or good line and chain.

• Boats docked at marinas should have extra lines attached. Line lengths should be sufficient to accommodate excessive high water.

• Once your boat is secured, leave it and don’t return until the storm has passed.

• Fuel your car.

• Stock up on canned provisions

• Check supplies of special medicines and drugs.

• Secure lawn furniture and other loose material outdoors.

• Tape, board, or shutter windows to prevent shattering.

• Wedge sliding glass doors to prevent them from lifting from their tracks.

WHEN A HURRICANE WARNING IS ISSUED

A warning means sustained winds of 74 mph or higher are expected in the warning area within 24-hours or less.

• Closely monitor radio, TV, NOAA Weather Radio, and/or hurricane hotline telephone numbers for official bulletins.

• Follow instructions issued by local officials and LEAVE IMMEDIATELY IF ORDERED TO DO SO.

• Plan to evacuate if you live on the coastline, an offshore island, or live near a river or in a flood plain.

If staying home in a sturdy structure on high ground:

• Board up garage and porch doors.

• Move valuables to upper floors.

• Bring pets in.

• Fill containers with several days supply of drinking water. Approximately one gallon per person, per day.

• Turn up refrigerator to maximum cold and don’t open unless necessary.

• Only use your phone for emergencies.

• Stay indoors on the downwind side of the house away from windows.

• Beware of the eye of the hurricane.

• Bring in small hand tools to aid you should your home be damaged during the storm.

If you are evacuating:

• Leave early in daylight if possible.

• Shut off water and electricity at main stations.

• Take small valuables and documents but travel light.

• Persons needing special foods or medicines should take them with them.

• Take sufficient money in small bills to defray certain expenses you may incur.

• Lock up house.

• Notify family members or friends outside of the warned area of your evacuation plans.

• Drive carefully to designated shelter or other evacuation location by following recommended evacuation routes.

AFTER THE STORM PASSES

• Stay in your protected area until the storm has passed and local officials announce it is safe to travel.

• Drive carefully – watch for dangling electrical wires, undermined roads, and flooded low spots.

• Report broken or damaged water, sewer, and electrical lines.

• Use caution when re-entering your home.

• If your home has structural damage, do not enter until it is checked by building officials.

• Check for gas leaks.

• Check food and water for spoilage.

Time to make memories before it’s too late Uncle’s Influence: The author shares how his uncle Manuel introduced him to fishing at a young age, taking him to Gasparilla Island and teaching him various fishing techniques during the 1950s. They often camped on the shoreline and experienced fishing adventures that shaped the author’s love for the sport. At the age of five years and a few months, he took me under his wing like an angel and hooked me on fishing. He was only 18 years old at the time but had already acquired more knowledge about fishing in Tampa Bay than most anglers twice his age. About a year into my adventures with my uncle, he decided to expand the boundaries and that summer we started fishing Gasparilla Island.

• Back then in the 50’s there were no bridges to the island, only a ferryboatservices several times a day. I do remember the last ferryboat left at 8 PM on Friday nights. We missed it several times when the traffic on US 41, then a single lane highway would back up for miles around Sarasota and we had to spend the night fishing the old railroad bridge that carried supplies to the island (the bridge is still there today and a good fishing spot) until the next ferryboat arrived at 8 AM.

• We would camp on the shoreline within sight of the old phosphate pier that extended into Boca Grande Pass was a beautiful sight at night, its lights looking more like a great ship from the distance gliding into the pass (all that is left of the pier now is wooden pilings). Fishing was notallowed on the pier except on weekends. No ships docked and at night the guards would let us fish till daybreak in exchange for some of our catch or sometimes for a bottle of rum and boy did we catch fish. Huge redfish up to 40 inches long, snook (as they were called soap fish

in the 50’s) were considered trash fish Grouper, flounder and mangrove snapper were common occurrences during the winter months.

• At any given time, you could hook up with a goliath grouper that many times exceeded two hundred pounds. We used 3/8 anchor line with 20/0 hook and for sinkers we used old window sash weights with mullet for bait. The line was lowered to the bottom towards the end of the pier and tied to the railing. When the railing shook you knew you had a big fish, and all the guys would slowly walk the beast to the shoreline where it was cleaned and deboned and iced for the trip back home.

• During the day we fished for mackerel, trout and redfish along the shoreline and island side of the railroad bridge. Part of the learning experience was not only fishing but camping and cooking our catch. I remember a walkway on both sides of the pier with a conveyor belt that ran through the center

• I don’t remember a lot more than that, other than my uncletiedan old anchor line around my waist and the other end was tied to the railing. This gave me enough scope to let me work an area but short enough that if I fell in the water only my feet would touch. The current then as it today runs at a good clip through the pass, and I would have been swept into the Gulf forever. If my mother had ever known or found out some of my many experiences I had with my uncle, it would have ended my fishing career.

In the winter of 1952 Uncle Manuel received an invitation from his uncle (Uncle Sam), then known as the draft board, to spend some time in the Army. My adventures were put on hold until his return, but my love for fishing continues even today.

May Tampa Bay Fishing Report. Snook action is

Great fishing around Anna Maria Island as we had into summer

The fishing and the weather around Anna Maria Island and Bradenton FL have been great lately as we end our spring break season and get into summer. Guests on our fishing charters have been enjoying successful fishing along with the best weather this area has to offer. The water in Tampa Bay and surrounding Anna Maria Island and the Gulf of America has been teaming with life. The last few weeks we have been seeing an abundance of bait fish schools, threadfin herring and pilchards. There has been no shortage or dolphins around and we have been seeing quite a few slow-moving manatees as well. Plenty of bird life lately including pelicans, seagulls, terns, cormorants, ospreys, a variety of herons, egrets, and spoonbills have been common sightings while fishing and traveling spot to spot. Some of the most prevalent species of fish being landed on our charters include snook, spotted seatrout, redfish, Spanish mackerel, grouper, ladyfish, and jack crevalle.

May and June are a great time of year for inshore fishing. Tarpon are showing up more and more by the day, the snook are making their way to their spawning

areas out on the beaches and passes for the summer, big schools of bait are all over the place with Spanish Mackerel, ladyfish, spotted seatrout, blacktip and lemon sharks, jacks, and other hungry fish gorging themselves. The deep grass flats are great areas to fish when the water warms and provide a variety of fish to anglers. The tarpon have shown up in good numbers in Tampa Bay around the Skyway bridge and some of the major passes. As we get more into May the migratory fish along the beaches of Anna Maria Island will show up and become a target on our fishing charters.Gag grouper seem to be everywhere we go. They are catch and release but are a blast to catch and really test your skills as an angler. The mangrove snapper are getting more active with the warm clean water we have been seeing throughout Tampa Bay. They are around structures like the major bridges and artificial reefs. As we get more towards the middle of the summer, we will see more snapper being caught on our fishing charters.

The bait fish are back on the grass flats. My favorite time to catch the bait on the grass flats is early in the morning as the sun is peaking over the horizon. Anchor the boat

hot along the mangroves with the best bites in the early morningusing topwater plugs or their favorite summer bait live greenback sardines. Fishing with live bait I like to freeline the baits in morning and use a float like the Four horsemenwhich has a distinct noise I found draws a lot of attention in the afternoon.

Redfish will be roaming the flats, and I suggest cutting threadfin sardines on a 3/0 Kahle hook with a split shot about 3 inches from the hook. Another new technique is using a yellowtail 1/8 oz 3/0 hook sizejig. Pick a spot with salt and pepper bottom (grass with sandy potholes) or close to some oyster barscast in the general area and let the baits soak on the bottom it may take some time, but the reds will come, and chances are you will catch the bigger fish.

Mackerel will be everywhere you have a strong running tide;range markers and artificial reefs are a good place to start.Chumming is the preferred method to get them started I recommend using a 1/0 XXL J hook tied to 30-pound fluorocarbon leader at least 30 inches long.

Black drums can be found under most bridges feeding on cut blue crabs use a 5000-size reel with medium heavy spinning rod depending on the current anywhere from a ½ to 1 0z sinker is recommended. Mangrove snapper will be in the same area except they prefer shrimp or small greenback sardines on a 1/0 hook.

Where: look for deep cuts with strong currents, structurer that hold baits and what we call humps areas where the bottom come up quickly and has deep drops around them.

Florida Captain Sergio Atanes S & I Charters, Inc. 813-973-7132 Reelfishy.com

and chum using dry tropical fish food to create a slick and wait for the bait to congregate in the slick. I like to use a ten-foot cast net with quarter inch mesh to capture the bait fish once they are chummed up.

Tough Bites, Tight Bonds: A Week of Fellowship on the Water

This week was a tough week of fishing. I worked an evening shift, 3:30 pm to midnight, so I went out on Monday and Thursday. On Monday, I went out with my friends Don and Steve. This was the first time Steve joined Don and me, and we met through Salt Strong.

We met at the dock around 8:00 am and went on our adventure. Unfortunately, we didn’t know it would be a tough day fishing. We started heading north and tried to fish the spoil islands just past the North Causeway bridge.

When we came up to the first spoil island, I wanted to fish, we realized it was too shallow. I don’t recall it being that shallow before, but it was, and we almost got stuck. I spent about ten minutes looking for a channel to get to the east side of the spoil island, but then decided to run further north. As we headed out to the channel, Don was trolling a shallow diver behind the boat, and he hooked up with a baby jack. Little did we know that would be the last fish caught the rest of the day.

Once in the channel, we made the run to Round Island. I was hopeful as I heard some trout were being caught up there. We worked our way from the northwestern point of the island and all the way around without a single bite. We saw birds and lots of blow-ups on the schools of mullet, but the fish didn’t want what we were throwing.

With it getting late in the morning, I headed to Harbor Branch. Once again, we had little luck

here. Although about halfway to the west shoreline, I did hook up with a short snook, but it was short-lived, as the first jump, he shook the hook. I didn’t want to stop fishing on a bad note, but I had to get to work, so we headed back to the dock at this time.

Even though the fishing was slow, we had good fellowship and beautiful weather. We saw several manatees and a pod of dolphins. I joked that today’s trip was a sightseeing trip rather than a fishing trip.

On Thursday, I managed to get another boat, and since it was last minute, I texted Don to meet me at the dock. Since we went north on Monday and didn’t do well, we headed south. We went to marker 192 and decided to fish the west bank docks. After drifting for a while, I realized it was difficult to fish the docks without a trolling motor, so we changed it up and headed east to Bear Point.

Hope all mothers had a great weekend and hope some caught some fish. Continued days of sunshine and plenty of heat, has kept a great bite going.

Structured areas are main targets for locating snook like always, but docks have been the main targets last week. Schooling fish are gathering along dock pillings and long docks along points. Live baits freelined near structure creates strikes. Rapala skitter walks and DOA 4” jerk baits worked with tide creates awesome surface strikes.

Bear Point still has a lot of grass, but once again, we struck out. There were lots of mullet again, and every once in a while, we would see something chasing them; however, we were unable to get any bites. With it approaching 11:00 am, I started heading back to hit the oyster bars on the way back. As we were heading to the channel, I was trolling a slam shady bomber, and it paid off, as I caught the only fish of the day, a baby jack crevalle. When we got to the oyster bar, our first hit was a shrimp on a float. It caught us by surprise, as Don and I were both throwing paddle tails. All of

shorelines.

Schooling jacks have ranged in size from 2 to 5 pounds but anglers have wrangled 10 to 20 pounders in on light tackle.

Deep holes and channels are holding schooling tarpon on both sides of the tides. Tarpon have been active on live baits as of late, patience is key as tarpon can be picky at times. As we get closer to the full moon bigger pods and fish will start to gather along beach’s and passes.

Jacks have been plentiful and ferocious striking live baits and Rapala along sea walls and

a sudden, I heard Don’s reel screaming. I was closest to the rod, so Don told me to grab it. Whatever it was, it was heavy and was running hard. Unfortunately, it broke me off about 15 seconds into the fight. I felt bad as I lost Don’s fish. This was the moment my luck changed. Once I handed Don his rod back, my reel started screaming. I spent the next five minutes. With the way it was fighting, I thought for sure it was a stingray, but it turned out to be a 4-foot bonnethead. Over the next thirty minutes, I caught eight ladyfish and lost at least that many before I got them to the boat. Unfortunately, Don didn’t get anything to the boat. I even offered to let him use the cork popper I was using to catch the fish, but he continued to fish with what he was using.

When we returned to the dock, I felt guilty that I had caught fish and Don had not. But Don is easygoing and said he enjoyed being out on the boat and fellowshipping with me. He reminded me of the importance of friendship and being in the moment.

Even though the fishing was tough this week, friendships were forged, and memories were made. Tania and I send our best wishes to all fellow anglers. May your fishing adventures be safe, blessed, and filled with tight lines and good times! Until next time, keep casting and chasing those dreams on the water.

The past week fishing continued to stay steady, with the warm weather we have received and no rain. Water temperatures are climbing.

Snook where the hot topic last week any dock’s or sea walls were prime targets to land a linesider. Live bait and artificial lures like DOA 3” shad tail or 4” jerk bait produced strikes. Snook are schooling up, common snook are the most dominant of the four species. Fat snook seemed to be more prevalent around deeper docks.

Channels and bays continued to thrive with a plethora species for anglers to target. Big Spanish mackerel

and jacks are hanging in schools, striking live bait along with 3 inch DOA shad tail. With the big tides we received last week I seen good influx of snapper along with black drum around rocks piles and structured areas.

As we continue to push close to summer, we’re going to start seeing the migratory patterns of the bigger tarpon and snook gathering near beaches and deeper passes. Hopefully the big school is a Bait will show triggering a feeding frenzy.
