12 Marina Safety Tips for Boaters

You’ve got your boat bag packed, you’re covered in sunscreen, and you’re making your way to the marina. Before you head out to enjoy a day on the water, remember that boating safety must come first. By prioritizing marina safety, you can feel confident as a responsible captain of a fun day on the water. In this post, we’ll explain the importance of following these marina safety tips.

12 Safety Tips to Follow at Boat Marinas

1. Wear Your Life Jacket: Remember to wear your life jacket or personal flotation device (PFD) when stepping onto the dock or near the water. Life jackets can be life savers during an accidental fall into the water. Before heading out, ensure everyone has a clean, properly fitting life jacket that meets safety regulations.

2. Watch Your Step: Mind Slippery Surfaces: Boat docks and decks seem stable but can easily get slippery, especially when wet. Be cautious when walking on docks and decks, and encourage children to walk slowly. Wear appropriate non-slip shoes with good traction and consider using non-slip mats and treatments to enhance safety on slippery surfaces.

3. Respect No-Wake Zones: Take a slow, no-wake speed when cruising within your marina and other no-wake zones. No-wake zones are designated to protect swimmers, small boats, docks, and the shore from

excessive wake turbulence – keeping everyone safe. Also, take it slow in crowded or tight areas to minimize the risk of accidents due to your boat’s wake.

4. Watch for Other Boats and Pedestrians: Staying aware of other boats and people is always critical when boating. Keep watch for other boats, kayakers, paddleboarders, and people on the docks. Use hand signals or signaling devices to communicate with others when necessary, taking extra care in crowded areas. Looking out for fellow boaters is just one among the numerous responsibilities that boat captains must manage. Watch the video below to learn more about boat captain’s duties.

5. Understand the Marina’s Layout: Familiarize yourself with the marina layout and take note of emergency equipment locations, fire extinguishers, and first aid stations. Knowledge of these safety essentials can make a difference in an emergency.

6. Obey Posted Rules and Regulations: Pay attention to all posted signs, speed limits, and other regulations within the marina. The rules are intended to keep everyone safe and must be taken seriously. Failure to follow marina etiquette and regulations can create dangerous situations and have your access revoked.

7. Secure Your Boat Properly: Properly tie your boat to the dock using the appropriate lines and fenders. A securely anchored boat prevents damage to your boat and other boats

nearby. An unsecured boat is dangerous and can be a costly mistake.

8. Shore Power Connections: Safety must be the top priority when using shore power. Ensure proper electrical connections and grounding to avoid electrical hazards. Regularly inspect electrical equipment to ensure safe operation, and do not use any unsafe electrical equipment.

9. Maintain Water Evacuation Systems: Ensuring proper water evacuation systems and the correct functioning of bilge pumps is a critical aspect of boat maintenance and safety. Water can enter a boat from just about everywhere, from leaks, waves, and even rain. Having reliable systems in place is essential to keep your boat dry and stable. Regularly inspect and test your boat’s bilge pump to ensure it’s in good working condition.

10. Avoid Swimming in the Marina: Swimming in the marina area is dangerous due to boat traffic, electrical shock, and submerged hazards – not to mention that the water may be contaminated with oils and other fluids from the nearby boats. Always use designated swimming areas away from boats and keep a watchful eye on children near the water.

11. Keep the Marina Clean: You are responsible for disposing of all trash while on the water. Take everything you brought with you and dispose of waste in designated bins. Keeping the space safe and clean benefits everyone, including marine life.

12. Follow Fuel Safety Guidelines:

Adhering to safe fueling practices at the marina protects you, your boat, and the environment:

• Before fueling, turn off all engines, generators, and electrical equipment on board.

• Ensure proper ventilation of the boat’s fuel compartment before and during fueling.

• Keep a fire extinguisher nearby in case of a fuel spill or fire.

• Never smoke on board while fueling.

• Properly ground the boat to avoid static electricity buildup.

• Use a fuel spill containment pad or absorbent material to catch accidental spills.

• Fill the fuel tank slowly and prevent overfilling.

• Avoid misfueling.

• Clean up spills immediately using absorbent pads.

• Use the correct fuel for your boat.

• Regularly inspect fuel lines and connections for signs of wear, damage, or leaks.

• Be cautious with portable fuel containers.

Clean Marina Program

1. Learn More About the Florida Clean Marina Program (CMP): To learn how to become a Florida Clean Marina download a copy of the Florida Clean Marina Designation Guide to review the step-by-step process to designation at https://floridadep. gov/rcp/clean-marina. This document walks you through the process and explains how to complete the Clean Marina Action Plan (CMAP) checklist. In addition, CMP conducts introductory workshops around the state several times a year. • While attendance is not required, these gatherings are an excellent way to become more familiar with the qualifications required to become a designated facility, socialize with program members and learn about available assistance within your area. • You may email Clean.Marina.Program@FloridaDEP.gov or call the program manager, Pamela Grainger, at 850-245-2846 with any questions.

2. Take the Florida Clean Marina Pledge and Submit an Application: CMP promotes voluntary adoption of measures to reduce pollution from marinas and recreational boats. After completing a Clean Marina Application and signing the pledge, you make a commitment to actively pursue practices that protect Florida’s waters from harmful chemicals, excess nutrients and marine debris. Upon completion, electronic submission to the Clean Marina Program can be completed by email to Clean. Marina.Program@FloridaDEP.gov.

3. Conduct a Self-assessment of Your Facility: The Florida Clean Marina Action Plan, also known as a CMAP, is designed for use by facility operators to conduct self-assessments on location. Each section of the CMAP corresponds to the best management practices listed within the Florida Clean Marina Best Management Practices. The CMAP is composed for all program

assessments, including Clean Marina, Boatyard, Marine Retailer and/or Clean & Resilient Marina. It is necessary only to complete those sections that are applicable to your facility. Designation as a Florida Clean Marina will be awarded to facilities that meet 100% in the regulatory and legal requirements and at least 60% of the recommended best management practices.

The links below will provide you additional information about regulatory requirements your facility may have: • State Lands Lease.

• Environmental Resource Permit (ERP).

• National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES). • Storage Tanks.

• Hazardous Waste.

This document also will be used by all Florida Clean Marina Program coordinators throughout the state to conduct facility reviews. Upon completion, the CMAP can be emailed to Clean. Marina.Program@FloridaDEP.gov.

4. Contact the Florida Clean Marina Program to Schedule an Environmental Review: The Florida Clean Marina Program’s main office is in Tallahassee. Office staff members are available to provide technical assistance and supply additional information on all topics covered within the Florida Clean Marina Program. Each participating marina operator will be matched with a district coordinator who will facilitate the certification process.

• To inquire about the certification process, or to schedule a site visit upon completion of the Florida Clean Marina Action Plan, contact Pamela Grainger, 850-245-2846.

5. Designation: After the site visit and the internal file review verifies there are no outstanding issues with your facility, the coordinator will submit a recommendation to the program

administrator. Provided there are no issues and you have implemented at least 60% of the recommended BMPs, you will be designated. You receive a certificate plus a flag to fly at your marina.

6. Enjoy Your Rewards: As a designated Florida Clean Marina facility, each marina receives a high-quality, domestically manufactured program flag to fly. Designation certificates are also provided for marinas to display, and award ceremonies are available on request. Certified marinas with state lands leases will receive a 10% discount on their lease fees and many more benefits.

• The Florida Clean Marina Program takes pride in its designated facilities and lists all locations within an interactive map. This allows visitors and tourists to view facility details and plan their next excursion to environmentally responsible businesses throughout the state.

• The Florida Clean Marina Program promotes its dedicated locations through publications and program materials distributed during workshops.

7. Maintain Florida Clean Marina Program Status: The Florida Clean Marina Program follows an annual renewal schedule to ensure that all locations have upheld their commitment to implementing best management practices. Every December, an electronic notification is sent to all designated facilities with detailed information on renewal procedures. The annual renewal process includes completing the renewal form and serves as an excellent opportunity to update the program on any new best management practices that have been adopted by your facility. Every fifth year that a facility has been designated, they will receive a site visit from their regional Clean Boating coordinator.

UNITED STATES COAST GUARD FLOTILLA 7-16 OFFERS SAFE BOATING CLASSES IN GULFPORT, FL, MEETS THE THIRD WEDNESDAY OF EACH MONTH.

These classes qualify the attendee for the FWC Safe Boating Card. This card is required for most people born after January 1, 1988 to legally operate a power boat with greater than 10hp motor in Florida. The one-day class includes instruction on safety equipment, boat handling, rules of the road, navigation aids, communications, trailering, legal requirements and others. Power and sailboats are covered, as well as personal watercraft. Of course, besides making a boater in compliance, the main goal of the class is to create a safer boater. Classes are offered on the second Saturday of each month. To sign up, contact Marty Richardson at (630)674-5352. Flotilla 7-16 also performs free courtesy vessel safety inspections for power and sail boats, personal watercraft, and paddle craft. The inspector will come to your location, inspect the required safety features of your vessel, and if you pass will provide a safety sticker to mount on your vessel. The inspection is a courtesy, so no action is taken if problems are found. But the vessel owner then knows of any deficiencies to correct before having an accident or being sanctioned by the Coast Guard. To get more information or to schedule an inspection, contact Howard Bush at (305)731-3580. Anyone interested is invited to attend. Contact Flotilla Commander Howard Bush for more information at (305)731-3580.

A VESSEL SAFETY CHECK - STUART -

Despite numerous COVID-19 restrictions, more and more boaters are taking to the water to alleviate at-home boredom while taking advantage of the open-air benefits and more pandemic-free aspects of recreational boating. But if you haven’t been out boating in a while, are your vessel’s lights operating properly? Do you have a sufficient number of life jackets for the number of passengers aboard? Is your engine’s ventilation system up to par? To get you started on a new year boating adventure, now may be a perfect time to consider getting a 2022 Vessel Safety Check (VSC) offered by certified VSC examiners from the St. Lucie River Power Squadron, also known as America’s Boating Club of Martin County. These trained VSC examiners from the local squadron will point out safety features such as minimum requirements required by the U.S. Coast Guard, examine fundamental mechanical aspects of your vessel, and answer questions how you can have more fun safely on the water. These are just a few of the many discussion points covered in this voluntary examination. As an added plus, Vessel Safety Checks are free to boat owners. And if you don’t “pass muster” with the thorough examination, the summary report is yours and yours alone. No record of any possible deficiencies will be reported to the USCG, state agency or any other authority. Want to know more about this complimentary Vessel Safety Check program? Contact Peter Burns at (772) 486-2684 or burnspet@aol.com. St. Lucie River Power Squadron, one of more than 300 squadrons nationwide, also offers safe boating classes to the public. Check on their website, www.slrps.org, when classes will resume. Information about the parent organization is available at www.usps.org.

TIDES FOR FLORIDA’S ATLANTIC COAST: MAY 2025

Captain’sCorner

Capt. Rick

Fishing Forecast for May 2025

Tarpon fishing will take off during May as migratory fish arrive along our beaches. Also look for Spanish mackerel, tripletail, cobia and false albacore (little tunny) in the coastal gulf. Snook will move into passes and the surf and reds and trout should feed heavily on shallow flats as baitfish become more plentiful. Trout, blues, Spanish mackerel and more should be good options on deep grass flats.

Resident tarpon are usually the first to show up as they make their way out of rivers and creeks. As migratory tarpon start to arrive this month, we should have schools of tarpon moving both north and south along our beaches. Early arriving tarpon may be more aggressive due to less fishing pressure early in the season. Set up in their line of travel and wait for tarpon schools to move past and cast a DOA Baitbuster, a 4” CAL Shad, a live crab or pinfish to them. Once you’ve seen the first school of fish, you can concentrate your efforts in that “lane” since other schools should be following the same route. When they aren’t showing well on the surface, a live bait under a float in their travel lane may score. I’ve also done well blind casting a DOA Baitbuster or Swimming Mullet when there wasn’t much showing on the surface. Be quiet and using your electric trolling motor sparingly. Even though your 4-stroke outboard sounds quiet, it is no substitute for an electric trolling motor. Give other anglers at least several hundred yards of space and keep in mind that fish can be moving either north or south so setting up too close to another angler may affect their flow of fish.

Fly anglers should do well with a variety of baitfish or crab fly patterns fished on floating or intermediate sink tip fly lines. Staking out or anchoring in shallow water on their travel route should result in some shots at fish. The best angle is a “head on” shot, followed by a quartering shot. A perpendicular shot may work if it’s timed perfectly, although casting too far beyond their line of travel will usually spook them. I use a push pole with an occasional assist from a trolling motor if I need to adjust my position to make a cast.

Snook will be spawning this month so use tackle heavy enough to catch and release them in a

timely manner and handle them gently. Larger snook will mostly be females and should always be supported horizontally rather than hung vertically by the jaw. You’ll find them in passes and in the surf. They will also stage around docks and bridges close to passes. Casting CAL jigs with shad tails and jerk worms or DOA shrimp around docks and bridges close to passes should be effective. Small white flies, like my Grassett Snook Minnow, work well at night. One of the most fun ways to target snook is to walk the beach and cast CAL jigs, DOA Shrimp or flies to them in the surf.

Higher tides this month will mean that reds will spend more time feeding on shallow flats. Look for them along mangrove shorelines and around oyster bars when the tide is high and in potholes or along sandbars when the tide is low. When fishing shallow water for reds, be as quiet as possible. I prefer to use a push pole or wade. Reds are one of the most challenging species to catch on a fly. Since they can be very spooky, I often wade for them when fly fishing to keep a lower profile.

targeted in the same way as trout, but you may need to use wire or heavy fluorocarbon leader when toothy fish are around. You may also find Spanish and king mackerel, little tunny, cobia and tripletail in the coastal gulf. Keep your eyes open for surface activity such as diving birds, breaking fish or baitfish being forced out of the water which could indicate the presence of mackerel, blues or little tunny. Medium

THE VIRGIN ISLANDS BOAT EXPO (VIBE) - MAY 15-18 - ST. THOMAS, US

You’ll also find big trout in many of the same shallow areas that you find reds. They will be plentiful on deep grass flats. I prefer to cast CAL jigs and flies on sink tip fly lines for trout. A DOA Deadly Combo also works very well. Drifting and casting ahead of the drift is usually the most productive method. Look for flats that have a good mix of grass and sand and good tidal flow. Trout regulations in southwest Florida are currently a 3 fish per person bag limit and a 6 fish boat limit. Trout must be from 15”-19” with one allowed per vessel over 19”. In my opinion it’s important to protect larger trout, which are usually female breeders. Full regulations and details for all species can be viewed at https://myfwc.com/ .

You may find pompano, bluefish and Spanish mackerel on the same deep grass flats where trout are plentiful. They can be

spinning tackle and 8 or 9-weight fly tackle should be heavy enough, although your tarpon spinning and fly tackle is not too heavy for cobia. Look for cobia either swimming on the surface or around navigational markers or buoys. I have also found cobia swimming with schools of tarpon before. Tripletail may be found around crab trap floats or buoys, where they can be targeted with a DOA shrimp or CAL jig on spinning tackle. When fly fishing for tripletail, a floating line on an 8 or 9-weight fly rod with a shrimp or baitfish fly pattern, like my Grassett Flats Minnow, should get the job done.

This is one of my favorite months of the year. If battling a big tarpon isn’t for you, you should have plenty to do on both shallow and deep grass flats or in the coastal gulf. I’ll be spending my time targeting tarpon in the coastal gulf unless conditions won’t allow it. There is something about casting a fly to a giant fish in shallow water! Our natural resources are under constant pressure from red tides fueled by industrial, agricultural and residential runoff, toxic spills and discharges, freezes, increasing fishing pressure and habitat loss and degradation, please limit your kill, don’t kill your limit!

Wishing all of the Moms a Happy Mothers Day! May offers great fishing for the Jupiter and Palm beach area. Local waters are teaming with a plethora of species, anglers can expect plenty of rod bending action. Warm weather stays consistent, the winds have as well. Moderate winds help cut the heat down while anglers enjoy wrangling their catches to the boat.

Snook fishing heats up, snook start to migrate to local passes and beaches for up coming spawn. The snook can be seen cruising along sea walls and docks in search of food. Live bait and DOA 3” shad tail on a 1/4 ounce jig head casted in there vicinity will get your drag screaming. Bait schools will be in our local area and this is the time for top water action. Rapala skitter walks worked over open flats and near heavy structure causes for some explosive action. If you have never experienced top water action for snook, I recommend you try there is nothing like it. The snook will range in size from 5 to 20 pounds.

Tarpon “silver king” an awesome fishing providing acrobatic leaps and drag screaming runs for anglers. Tarpon can be found in the ICW, local inlets and beaches. Live baits like mullet or pinfish work great. Artificial lures, DOA 3” shad tail and a DOA Terror Eyz will get the drag screaming.

The inshore waters will also be teaming with jacks, sharks, ladyfish, snapper, and many other species, putting a bend in the rod. Live bait, freelined with the tide or Rapala x wrap will get the strike.

Big Spanish mackerel are holding in bays and on flats. Spanish are schooled up attacking Doa 3 inch shad tail and live bait. Mixed in with the mackerel, big jacks, bluefish, ladyfish and moonfish, all providing drag screaming action. Snapper, drum, sharks and weakfish all abundant while working baits on the bottom.

Well that is the fishing forecast for May. I hope everybody enjoyed, now get

with Captain Eric Evans Florida Keys

and Dolphin Spring fishing in Key West has been a mix of opportunity and challenges, with winds stirring things up throughout March and April. While the weather hasn’t always been ideal, the days we’ve been able to get out have delivered some solid action across the board for the fishing charter fleet.

Offshore, sailfish have made a strong showing, reminding us why April is one of the top months to target them. The afternoon bite has also been productive for blackfin tuna and dolphin (mahi-mahi), with more activity expected as water temperatures continue to rise heading into May.

On windier days, we’ve shifted our focus to the backcountry of Key West, where the tarpon migration is well underway. Schools of tarpon have been spotted moving through the channels and flats, offering anglers exciting opportunities to hook into these powerful fish. March and April signal the start of the migration, with May and June marking the

best times to target them have been early morning and late afternoon, especially during the full and new moon phases when tidal movement increases.

Looking ahead to May, we’re gearing up for the opening of several highly anticipated seasons. Grouper season kicked off on May 1 and runs through December 31. We’ve already seen great numbers of red and black grouper being caught and released, and we expect the bite to stay strong once harvest opens.

Also opened on May 1 is the deep drop season for golden tilefish, blueline tilefish, and snowy grouper, which will run through September. These deepwater species offer excellent table fare and a unique challenge for anglers ready to drop down

With a wide variety of species available and conditions beginning to stabilize, the next few months are shaping up to be prime time for fishing in

the Florida Keys. Whether you’re looking to tangle with tarpon in the backcountry or head offshore in search of mahi, there’s no shortage of action waiting in Key West.

Brunswick Landing Marina Named Best Marina in the Country for Third Consecutive Year by

Marinalife Magazine

BRUNSWICK, Ga. (Newswire.com) - Brunswick Landing Marina, the premier destination for boaters along the East Coast, has once again been recognized as the best marina in the country by Marinalife Magazine. This marks the third consecutive year that Brunswick Landing Marina has earned this prestigious honor, solidifying its reputation as a top-tier facility for boaters from around the globe.

The award, determined through a combination of boater feedback and industry evaluation, highlights the marina’s exceptional amenities, customer service, and commitment to creating a world-class experience for its guests. Nestled in the heart of historic downtown Brunswick, the marina offers state-of-the-art facilities, a vibrant community atmosphere, and unparalleled access to the natural beauty of Georgia’s Golden Isles.

“We are incredibly honored to be recognized as the best marina in the United States for the third year running,” said Kyle Schieferdecker, Dock Master of Brunswick Landing Marina. “This award is a testament to our team’s dedication to providing outstanding service and to the wonderful boating community that makes our marina a home away from home for so many.”

Brunswick Landing Marina boasts over 375 slips and is capable of accommodating vessels up to 225 feet, with deep-water access, protected docks, and a host of modern amenities, including:

• Complimentary beer and wine for slip holders in their

popular Yacht Club

• Free laundry facilities and high-speed Wi-Fi

• Roaming security guards, gated access to each dock, and on-site maintenance services

• A vibrant events calendar, fostering a sense of community among boaters

• Immediate access to downtown Brunswick’s restaurants, shops, and cultural attractions

MarinaLife Magazine readers praised the marina’s welcoming atmosphere, high-quality facilities, and strategic location as key factors in their votes. Beyond its amenities, Brunswick Landing Marina is also celebrated for its eco-conscious initiatives, including partnerships with local environmental organizations.

“This recognition would not be possible without the support of our incredible boating community,” Dan Strickland added. “Their loyalty and enthusiasm inspire us every day to continue improving and offering the best possible experience for all who dock with us.”

Brunswick Landing Marina invites boaters and visitors alike to discover why it continues to set the standard for excellence in the marina industry. For more information about the marina’s amenities, services, and upcoming events, please visit brunswicklandingmarina.com or call the Dock Office at (912) 262 9264.
