RETHINKING CONSTRUCTION WASTE

Why recycling and deconstruction make sense for your next project

Harvest Eco-Salvage

AS A CONSTRUCTION and demolition (C&D) debris hauler and recycler, Marin Sanitary Service has been on thousands of job sites—new builds, kitchen remodels, full home teardowns, commercial tenant improvements, and everything in between—and one thing we can say with certainty is that the way you handle materials coming off your project matters. It matters for your bottom line, your schedule, and the sustainability of our future.

Construction and demolition debris represents one of the largest waste streams in the country, but the good news is that many loads contain recoverable materials.

Whether you’re a general contractor managing multiple subs or a homeowner preparing for a remodel, with just a little planning ahead, you can help:

• Reduce landfill dependency

• Conserve natural resources

• Lower greenhouse gas emissions

• Support local recycling markets

• Demonstrate leadership in the industry

WHY RECYCLING CONSTRUCTION AND DEMOLITION DEBRIS MAKES BUSINESS SENSE

Many contractors think recycling is about “being green.” It is, but it’s also about being efficient and competitive. Let’s walk through the benefits:

REDUCE DISPOSAL COSTS

Landfill tipping fees continue to rise. Clean loads separated by material (wood, concrete, metal, cardboard) are often significantly cheaper to process than mixed debris.

MEET LOCAL REQUIREMENTS

CalGreen building codes require a certain percentage of C&D waste to be diverted from landfill. Projects that plan for separation early avoid scrambling at the end for compliance documentation.

GAIN A MARKET ADVANTAGE

Homeowners increasingly care about sustainability. Being able to say “We recycled 75% of your project debris” is a real selling point.

DEMOLITION VERSUS DECONSTRUCTION:

WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE?

From our perspective as haulers and recyclers, while deconstruction is more labor intensive, it produces cleaner, higher-value materials, so more of it gets reused or recycled and less ends up buried in the landfill. Here’s a comparison

DEMOLITION

Traditional demolition is fast and straightforward: Tear it down, load it up, haul it out. Materials are mixed and transported to either a landfill or a construction debris recovery facility like Marin Sanitary’s indoor dump, where recyclables are separated mechanically and by hand.

Pros

• Fast

• Lower upfront labor cost

• Simpler scheduling

Cons

• Materials are often contaminated

• Lower recovery rates

• Fewer opportunities for reuse

• Potentially higher disposal costs

WHEN THE SMART MOVE IS DECONSTRUCTION

DECONSTRUCTION

With deconstruction, structures are carefully dismantled with the goal of maximizing reuse and recycling, and materials are separated on-site, such as lumber, cabinets, fixtures, metals, doors, windows, and flooring.

Pros

• Higher material recovery

• Reusable materials retain value

• Potential tax benefits (in some cases)

• Strong sustainability credentials

• Less landfill disposal

Cons

• More labor intensive

• Requires planning and coordination

Deconstruction makes the most sense when the structure contains valuable salvageable materials, the project timeline allows for selective dismantling, and the owner values sustainability. There may also be tax deduction opportunities for donations. (Consult a tax professional to learn more.) Another advantage is that older homes— especially those built before 1950—often contain high-quality lumber that cannot be replicated today. Salvaging those materials preserves history and reduces demand for new raw resources.

THE BEST USES FOR COMMON CONSTRUCTION MATERIALS

Here’s how several types of common construction materials are typically best handled:

Concrete, brick, and asphalt

Your best option is source separation and recycling. Concrete and masonry are ideal for crushing and reuse as aggregate base material. Clean loads (no rebar contamination beyond normal levels, minimal trash) are easy to process, have a lower hauling cost per ton, and are nearly 100% recyclable.

Cabinets, doors, windows, and fixtures

The best way to handle these materials is deconstruction and reuse. If removed carefully, they can be donated, resold, or reused in secondary markets.

PLAN AHEAD TO MAXIMIZE RECOVERY

(steel, copper, and

Separate and recycle directly. When kept clean, metals are infinitely recyclable and may generate rebates.

Dimensional lumber in good condition is well-suited for deconstruction and reuse, and oldgrowth lumber is extremely valuable. Clean scrap wood can be ground into mulch or biomass fuel. Painted or treated wood, however, is often limited to specific recycling outlets or landfill, depending on local regulations.

If possible, it’s ideal to practice clean separation of drywall so it can be recycled into new gypsum products or soil amendments.

Clean cardboard is one of the easiest and most cost-effective materials to recycle in a separate recycling container, especially on new construction sites.

GET HELP WITH DECONSTRUCTION, RECYCLING, AND RECOVERY

Here are three resources to help homeowners and contractors keep construction materials out of landfill.

GREENLYNX

For over a decade, Santa Rosa-based deconstruction and reuse specialist GreenLynx has been dedicated to saving building materials from the landfill, giving them a second life in a new home or to serve a new purpose. During deconstruction, the company recovers as many building and finishing materials as possible for reuse, from kitchen sinks to beams and doors. Salvaged materials are offered for sale at their reuse store in Santa Rosa. GreenLynx takes on all sizes of projects, whether completing the entire deconstruction process or only performing salvage.

Their experienced team also offers on-site training for contractors and other groups interested in learning about deconstruction and reuse facility management and start-up, as well as consulting services on logistics and policy. greenlynx.net

HARVEST ECO-SALVAGE

Old buildings are not garbage; they can be profit centers! That’s the mission behind nonprofit Harvest Eco-Salvage, which makes it easier for homeowners to navigate the deconstruction process. In addition to facilitating the donation of reusable and recyclable building materials, Harvest Eco-Salvage grants non-cash charitable tax deductions to donors (property owners) based on the market value of inplace real estate improvements that they salvage.

Here’s how the program works: The property owner obtains an appraisal from an IRS-qualified real estate appraiser who determines the fair market real estate value for the scope of work, whether it’s a total teardown, tenant improvement, or a substantial residential remodel. Harvest Eco-Salvage takes care of the IRS requirements and site documentation, then manages the donation of salvaged materials to other nonprofit organizations and reuse and recycling facilities. The tax deduction is granted by the IRS to the property owner in recognition of their commitment to keeping usable building materials out of landfill, quietly making a difference since 1999. harvestecosalvage.org

MARIN SANITARY

Before the first wall comes down, putting a plan in place can help maximize your recovery efforts. Homeowners and contractors should discuss early on what items will be reused and separated, what containers will be needed, and whether deconstruction is feasible for the project. It’s the contractor’s responsibility to communicate these expectations to subcontractors as well.

Using a construction and demolition (C&D) materials recovery facility (MRF) like Marin Sanitary makes sense when full separation on site isn’t practical, space is limited, labor resources are tight, and project timelines are compressed. Marin Sanitary can recover wood, metal, cardboard, and concrete (if it’s not heavily contaminated), however, the cleaner the load, the higher the recovery rate and the lower the disposal costs. Often, the best results come from a hybrid approach: separating high-value materials like metal, concrete and cardboard and sending the remaining mixed debris to a C&D MRF. marinsanitaryservice.com

RESILIENCE, REIMAGINED

For many homeowners, “home hardening” still brings to mind stark yards and fortresslike homes. It can sound restrictive, expensive, and overly technical. But that perception is outdated.

TODAY, WILDFIRE-RESILIENT DESIGN is about creating homes and landscapes that are welcoming, vibrant, and comfortable while also being safer, more durable, and better suited to California’s changing climate. Home hardening is not about limitation. It is an opportunity to create spaces that are beautiful, eco-friendly, and built to last.

In Marin County, where natural beauty and community character matter deeply, wildfire safety and good design go hand in hand.

DESIGN MATTERS FOR WILDFIRE RESILIENCE

Research shows that most homes lost in wildfires are not ignited by a wall of flame, but by wind-driven embers that can travel miles ahead of a fire front. They gather in roof valleys and gutters, slip into vents and eaves, ignite mulch and leaf litter, and land on decks or fences.

That is why wildfire safety is often about details. Many of the most effective upgrades focus on small exterior improvements, the same details that shape a home’s appearance and function. When thoughtfully designed, these features can enhance a home’s character rather than detract from it.

BUILDING BEAUTIFUL, FIRE-SMART

HOMES FOR STRONGER COMMUNITIES

LUSH AND INVITING: FIRE-SMART LANDSCAPING

A common misconception is that wildfire preparedness requires barren yards. In reality, fire-smart landscapes can be lively, social spaces where families may gather and pollinators thrive.

The 5 feet closest to a home, known as “Zone 0,” are critical for ember resistance, as this is where embers are most likely to accumulate and ignite combustible materials.

Replacing bark mulch or wood chips in this area with decorative gravel, stone, concrete pavers,

"These approaches not only conserve water, reduce maintenance, support pollinators, and increase property value—they also showcase just how beautiful resilient design can be."

decomposed granite, or stepping-stone pathways creates a clean, intentional border.

Far from looking stark, Zone 0 treatments can frame entryways, highlight architectural features, and create contrast with the surrounding landscaping. A well-designed Zone 0 often appears modern and polished—and is lowmaintenance as well.

Beyond the first 5 feet, landscaping can remain colorful and inviting while reducing risk. Firesmart yards often include:

Drought-tolerant and California native plants
Well-spaced shrubs and trees
Defined gathering areas for seating, play, and outdoor meals

These approaches not only conserve water, reduce maintenance, support pollinators, and increase property value—they also showcase just how beautiful resilient design can be.

COMMUNITY FIRE SAFETY STARTS AT THE BUILDING ENVELOPE

Wildfire resilience doesn’t stop at the property line. In wind-driven wildfire events, most homes ignite from small, wind-borne embers that can travel more than a mile ahead of the main fire. These embers can land on roofs, collect in gutters, slip through vents, and lodge in vulnerable building assemblies.

Once one home ignites, it becomes a new ignition source for the next. In dense neighborhoods—especially those with steep hillsides, narrow access roads, and closely spaced homes common in Marin—the weakest building often determines the outcome for everyone nearby.

That’s why firesafe neighborhoods begin at the building envelope, where embers gain entry: the roof, siding, windows, vents, decks, and all the transitions between them. Common entry points include unscreened attic and crawlspace vents, gaps at roof edges and eaves, and wood fencing connected directly to combustible siding. Deck cavities with accumulated organic debris are particularly dangerous.

ASSESS YOUR RISK BEFORE UPGRADING

Wildfire vulnerability isn’t uniform across homes, even within the same neighborhood. Exposure varies by site orientation, prevailing wind direction, proximity to vegetation, and the condition of existing building assemblies.

Because of these differences, resilience improvements are most effective when they’re based on a clear understanding of how a particular home is built and how it’s exposed. A systematic review of the building envelope—identifying ember pathways,

material ratings, transition details, and maintenance gaps—allows improvements to be prioritized based on actual risk severity.

PRACTICAL STEPS WORTH TAKING

With a clear picture of where your property is most vulnerable, targeted improvements can deliver the greatest protective value, including:

 Ember-resistant vent screens

 Class A roofing systems, regularly cleared of debris at valleys and gutters

 Non-combustible transition details where fencing meets the house

 Removing organic material from the first 5 feet around the foundation

 Inspecting deck cavities and edge conditions to identify debris accumulation before it becomes fuel

No single upgrade makes a home fireproof. Each one reduces ignition probability and slows the sequence if ignition does occur. When homeowners evaluate and strengthen their building envelopes based on site-specific risk rather than generic prescriptions, they do more than protect their own property. They contribute to the resilience of the entire neighborhood.

Fire-rated roofing materials, including metal and composite options, come in a wide range of colors and profiles to complement any style.

SAFETY THAT ELEVATES EVERYDAY LIVING

Flagstone patios and hardscape features reduce combustible vegetation and define outdoor living areas.

Home hardening isn’t only about preparing for wildfire season. It’s about building homes that perform better and look great year-round. Newer products are designed to blend seamlessly into existing architecture. Low-profile vent screens, for example, are nearly invisible while providing critical protection.

Many wildfire-resistant materials align with modern design trends:

 Fiber-cement siding offers clean lines and ember resistance without the upkeep of wood.

 Flagstone patios and hardscape features reduce combustible vegetation and define outdoor living areas.

"Wildfire resilience is not all-or-nothing. it’s a series of manageable steps that build protection over time— for the whole community."

These materials are also durable and often lower maintenance, resulting in fewer repairs and improved long-term value.

SMALL, SMART CHANGES ADD UP

Another myth is that home hardening requires a major remodel. In reality, research shows targeted

Cement and fiber-cement

siding offers clean lines and ember resistance without the upkeep of wood.

NEIGHBORS, FENCES, AND FIRES

As a deck and fence contractor serving Marin County for four decades, we’ve seen first-hand how making fire-safety improvements can increase property values, enhance the beauty of your home, and strengthen community relations. Here are three tips for upgrading your home’s gates, decking, and fencing for fire safety:

 Replace wood gates and returns with metal gates and fencing. This creates a fire break to protect your house, as well as providing an aesthetic upgrade and forever solution.

 When replacing decks, cover joists, install the lowest siding plank at the house using a non-combustible material like Hardi Plank to protect from ember gathering, and install a Class A WUI decking (such as TimberTech, which offers an ignition-resistant surface).

 Install metal railings around decks rather than wood.

Being a good steward and neighbor go hand in hand. Learning from your neighbors about their own fire mitigation journey is a great resource and a wonderful way to connect with others. On your own journey, remember that every step or improvement realized helps reduce risk and brings peace of mind.

BUILDING WITHOUT BURNING BRIDGES

How to be a good neighbor during a home construction project.

IF YOU’RE PLANNING to embark on a residential remodel or building project, you can help ease neighborhood tensions by working hand-inhand with your contractor to minimize the impact. Small steps can make a big difference. Here are a few ways you and your contractor can keep the good will flowing in your community throughout the duration of the project.

1. INFORM YOUR NEIGHBORS

The first step to starting the project off on the right foot with your neighbors is to let them know about your project before construction begins, including when the work will start, the overall scope, and how long you expect it to take. Ask your contractor if they can hand-deliver letters of introduction with important jobsite and company contact information for the project. It can help make this process easier, and it provides your neighbors with a resource they can refer to so they know who to contact if they have concerns.

2. ENSURE THE JOBSITE IS CLEAN AND SAFE

Keeping a clean, organized, and professional-looking jobsite isn't just good for safety and efficiency, but it also reduces the burden on the community, especially the immediate neighbors. Talk to your contractor to ensure they’ll have proper site fencing and controls in place, off-haul debris frequently so it doesn’t pile up, and keep all staged material and equipment clean and organized. This also relates to controlling dust. Every phase of work, from initial demo and grading to finish stone and masonry work, can create dust that floats through the neighborhood if not properly controlled.

3. BE MINDFUL OF NOISE

Perhaps one of the most noticeable nuisances of any project is the noise. While eliminating noise altogether may not be possible, your contractor should be considerate of neighbors’ lifestyles. Ask your neighbors to let you know if they are planning any important events, like a birthday party or backyard BBQ. Your contractor may be able to make minor adjustments to the schedule to avoid loud construction noise on those days, without reducing efficiency.

"Hiring a professional contractor ... can help you demonstrate your commitment to the neighborhood and make the whole project run smoother."

4. MAKE A PLAN FOR PARKING

Before construction begins, make sure your contractor has a plan in place for parking that considers the traffic flow in your neighborhood and minimizes inconvenience for your neighbors. A contractor can help reduce the number of vehicles that are associated with a given project by encouraging crews to carpool or even providing a company commuter van for larger projects that will bring the crew directly to the jobsite. Your contractor should also be prepared to manage parking needs for subcontractors, ensuring they know where they can

and cannot park due to either specific codes (like Belvedere’s maximum three cars per project rule) or neighbors’ wishes.

5. CONSIDER JOBSITE ETIQUETTE

The overall behavior of the crews and subcontractors can play a huge role in keeping neighbors happy, as they may interact with crews on a daily basis. Talk to your contractor about what protocols they practice to maintain jobsite etiquette. For example, banning smoking and music on jobsites can help maintain a professional impression and minimize disturbance for neighbors.

At the end of the day, being considerate of your neighbors during a construction project can go a long way toward ensuring you’ll receive a warm welcome from the community when you move into your remodeled or new home. Hiring a professional contractor with a track record of community-centric protocols can help you demonstrate your commitment to the neighborhood and make the whole project run smoother.

Simple upgrades to boost value on both your home and neighborhood

SMART LANDSCAPING FOR A BETTER BLOCK

IN MARIN COUNTY, landscaping is about appearance and function. The way a property is designed and maintained affects neighborhood character, environmental health, and even community safety. Thoughtful landscaping strengthens property values, supports local ecosystems, and contributes to a more resilient community for both the short and long term.

Whether you’re planning a landscape renovation or simply maintaining your existing garden, here are some practical, neighbor-minded ways to improve and care for your outdoor space that will also help you boost the health and value of your home.

Photography by Annie Sprat
Dan Fix Landscape Elena Putina

1

ENHANCE CURB APPEAL

Well-maintained front yards elevate not only individual homes but entire neighborhoods. Small, strategic updates can make a noticeable difference.

 Refresh your mulch to create a clean, finished appearance and minimize unwanted weed growth. Consider a fireresistant option.

 Replace overgrown shrubs with wellscaled, climate-appropriate and/or native plants. (Organizations like the California Native Plant Society, cnps.org, can help you identify these plants.)

 Define walkways with clear edging or stone.

 Add subtle, low-voltage lighting for safety and warmth.

2

CHOOSE CLIMATEAPPROPRIATE PLANTINGS

Marin’s climate calls for water-wise design. Selecting plants that thrive in local conditions reduces water use, lowers long-term maintenance needs, and supports pollinators and native wildlife—all benefitting both homeowners and the broader community. By choosing drought resistant plants, you may even qualify for a rebate through your water provider.

 Incorporate drought-tolerant and native species.

 Group plants by similar water needs (hydrozoning).

 Improve soil health with compost and proper drainage.

 Install efficient drip irrigation systems or smart controllers.

5

PRACTICE COMMUNITY STEWARDSHIP

Small actions can make a meaningful impact on community relationships by showing respect for shared spaces—and they demonstrate pride of ownership.

 Keep sidewalks clear of plant overgrowth.

 Manage leaf litter and debris.

 Maintain fences and property lines.

 Schedule maintenance activities considerately.

MAINTAIN LANDSCAPES

CONSISTENTLY

Proactive care ensures landscapes remain healthy, safe, and visually appealing year-round. It also helps to protect your investment and prevents small issues from becoming costly problems later on.

 Prune seasonally for plant health and structure.

 Check irrigation regularly to prevent expensive and unnecessary leaks and runoff.

 Maintain lawn and groundcover care to promote uniform growth.

 Clear debris and monitor drainage during rainy seasons.

3 4

CONSIDER LONGTERM FUNCTION AND DRAINAGE

Well-designed landscapes function as beautifully as they look. Improvements such as patios, retaining walls, fencing, and pathways should be designed with proper grading and drainage in mind. Managing water flow responsibly prevents erosion and runoff that can affect adjacent properties.

 Implement proper water management to direct water away from structures.

 Maintain soil stability to prevent erosion.

 Design safe walkways to ensure secure navigation through your property.

 Choose durable materials for long-lasting performance.

Landscaping in Marin County is a shared responsibility. When homeowners design thoughtfully, maintain consistently, and prioritize sustainability, entire neighborhoods benefit. Beautiful, resilient landscapes don’t happen by accident, however. They’re built with intention and maintained with care.

If you’re considering improvements or want to ensure your property stays healthy and neighborhood-friendly year-round, working with a local and seasoned professional team can help you protect and grow both your investment and your community.

DESIGNING FOR COMMUNITY

Four ways the spaces around us can impact our relationship with our neighbors

Contributor

AS A DESIGNER, I believe in the power of design to transform—not just spaces, but also relationships. Designers often talk about function, beauty, and value, but one of the most meaningful things design can do is shape how we relate to the people around us. A welldesigned home doesn’t just serve the family inside—it can quietly strengthen the neighborhood outside. Here are four ways design can help build community.

A PORCH IS AN INVITATION

Porches soften the boundary between private and public life, creating a place that naturally invites people to pause, sit in a rocking chair, and greet a neighbor walking by. They encourage small moments of connection that might not otherwise happen.

RETHINKING THE FRONT YARD

Many people view their front yard as something to look at—not to use—but when a driveway or lawn becomes a living garden, everything changes. Gardening, tending vegetables, or caring for fruit trees brings people outdoors. Neighbors stop to ask what’s growing, and conversations start easily, without planning or formality.

Fruit trees are especially powerful in this way. They produce more than one household can ever consume, an abundance that naturally leads to sharing. A bag of lemons or a basket of plums passed across a fence is a small gesture, but these exchanges are the threads that make a neighborhood feel like a community.

"Good communities are not built only through planning or policy; they’re also built through everyday interactions— through places that invite us to linger, notice, and share."

Ellen Manerud Design creates thoughtful spaces through strategic design thinking. Guided by a passion for curating environments, I work with homeowners and businesses to understand objectives and provide creative solutions that transform spaces. ellenmanerud.com

CREATING AN INDOOROUTDOOR CONNECTION

Even inside the home, design can strengthen our connection to the neighborhood. Window seats create a gentle link between indoors and out. Sitting by a window, you notice the rhythm of the street— the dog walkers, the changing light, the seasons shifting. You feel part of a larger living environment, not separate from it. Homes should offer refuge, but they don’t have to create isolation.

CONSCIOUSLY DESIGNING FOR COMMUNITY

As builders and designers, we influence more than square footage and finishes. The placement of a porch, the height of a hedge, the decision to add a path instead of a gate—these choices shape how open or closed a home feels to the world around it.

In my own work, I always include a question alongside all the practical ones: How does my design support my client's lifestyle, their family and relationships? For outdoor design, this includes: How might this home participate in its neighborhood? Sometimes the answer is as modest as a wider front step or a bench under a tree. Sometimes it’s transforming an underused front yard into something living and shared. These decisions don’t have to be expensive or complicated, but they can always be intentional.

Good communities are not built only through planning or policy; they’re also built through everyday interactions—through places that invite us to linger, notice, and share. Thoughtful design can help make those moments possible. And when it does, the impact reaches far beyond the walls of any one home.

FOR NEARLY FOUR

decades, Paula Krause has been a constant presence at the Marin Builders Association—a steady hand, a trusted resource, and someone whose dedication has helped shape the organization in countless ways.

This spring, Paula officially retired from her position as office manager after 38 years of service, marking the close of an extraordinary chapter in the history of the Marin Builders Association (MBA). Fortunately for the organization, she graciously agreed to stay on through April to help guide the transition—one final example of the commitment and care she has shown throughout her career.

association’s group health insurance program, helping members navigate complicated coverage options, and ensuring the program ran smoothly for the many businesses that relied on it.

In many ways, Paula became the organizational hub that kept the Marin Builders Association moving forward every day.

Staggering Numbers

Looking back at Paula’s time with the MBA, the numbers themselves tell an impressive story.

She has spent more than 9,500 days working at the Marin Builders Association. During those years, she has worked alongside about half

Nearly four decades of dedication to the Marin Builders Association

Paula’s Journey at the Marin Builders Association

Paula first joined the Marin Builders Association in 1988 as a typist, beginning what would become a long and impactful career. What started as an entry-level administrative role quickly evolved as the organization grew and as Paula’s skills and reliability became clear to everyone around her.

Over time, Paula became responsible for managing the front office and supporting staff across the organization. Her role grew to encompass a wide range of responsibilities that were essential to the day-to-day operations of the MBA. She handled membership dues billing, accounts receivable and accounts payable, coordination of member events, administration of the MBA Scholarship Program, and organization of educational seminars. She also provided ongoing assistance and support to the MBA Board of Directors, committees, staff, accountant, bookkeeper, members, and business partners. In addition, Paula played an important role in administering the

helping members solve problems, supporting board leadership, coordinating events, or simply making sure the office ran smoothly day after day, Paula approached every task with professionalism, patience, and care. Through economic shifts, industry changes, leadership transitions, and the everyday challenges that come with running an organization, Paula has remained a steady and reliable presence. Her deep institutional knowledge and unwavering dedication have helped guide the Marin Builders Association through both the hills and the valleys. In many ways, she has served as the quiet backbone of the organization.

a dozen executive directors, each bringing their own leadership style and priorities. Through each transition, Paula provided continuity and institutional knowledge that helped keep the organization grounded. She has also supported more than 150 members of the MBA Board of Directors, assisting them as they guided the association and worked t o strengthen Marin County’s building community.

Along the way, Paula has helped coordinate and support nearly 200 MBA events—gatherings that have brought members together to network, collaborate, and build the professional relationships that are central to the association’s mission.

A Grounding Presence

Behind those numbers, however, lies something far more meaningful. For decades, Paula has been the person who quietly made sure everything worked the way it was supposed to. She handled countless details behind the scenes that many members may never have noticed but that were absolutely essential to the organization’s success. Whether

A True Team Player

When asked about her favorite part of working with the Marin Builders Association, Paula once said: “I enjoy the diversity of my responsibilities and am excited about being a part of the Marin Builders Association moving on to the next level.” That perspective perfectly captures the spirit she has brought to her role for nearly four decades—a willingness to do whatever was needed combined with a genuine

Paula’s Deep Roots in Marin

Beyond her work with MBA, Paula has long been deeply connected to the Marin community. A Marin County native, she graduated from Marin Catholic High School and now lives in Corte Madera. She has also volunteered locally as a Neighborhood “Ready Marin” host, helping strengthen community preparedness and resilience.

Family has always been central to Paula’s life. She is the mother of three sons and a proud grandmother to two granddaughters and one grandson. She also carries the memory of her

belief in the future of the organization and the community it serves.

On behalf of the MBA Board of Directors, its members, and the broader community, we extend our deepest thanks to Paula for everything she has contributed over the years. Her professionalism, loyalty, and steady presence have helped shape the Marin Builders Association into the strong organization it is today. As Paula enters this well-earned retirement, her legacy will continue to be felt throughout the Marin Builders Association for many years to come. While this chapter may be coming

to a close, one thing is certain: The Marin Builders Association will always be a little bit of Paula’s place—and we’re all better because of it.
