IT’S NO SECRET THAT THE CONSTRUCTION INDUSTRY IS ONE OF THE MOST HEAVILY MALE-DOMINATED FIELDS. WOMEN MADE UP ABOUT 10.9% OF THE CONSTRUCTION WORKFORCE IN 2020, ACCORDING TO THE U.S. BUREAU OF LABOR STATISTICS—WITH MOST FEMALES WORKING IN ADMINISTRATIVE AND OFFICE SUPPORT POSITIONS.
THERE'S SOME EVIDENCE THOSE NUMBERS MIGHT FINALLY BE SHIFTING, ALBEIT SLOWLY. IN NOVEMBER 2024, THE U.S. DEPARTMENT OF COMMERCE PUBLISHED A REPORT TITLED “SPOTLIGHT ON WOMEN IN THE CONSTRUCTION INDUSTRY” THAT REVEALS 1 OUT OF 7 OPEN JOBS IN CONSTRUCTION ARE NOW GOING TO WOMEN, AVERAGING OUT TO BE 14% OF ALL JOBS IN THE INDUSTRY. THE SAME REPORT ALSO POINTS OUT THAT JOBS IN CONSTRUCTION ARE AMONG THE HIGHESTPAYING FOR INDIVIDUALS WITHOUT A BACHELOR'S DEGREE, AVERAGING $27 OR MORE PER HOUR.

If construction jobs are available and pay well, why aren’t more women pursuing careers in the industry?
For starters, working in construction is still widely perceived in society as a “man’s job”—a perception reinforced by media, marketing, and even children’s toys that rarely show women in these roles. The lack of visible female role models only adds to this outdated narrative.
There are also other obstacles. Many women in construction report facing harassment, discrimination, or unequal treatment on the job, including fewer opportunities for advancement. These challenges can create an environment where it’s harder for women to feel supported and succeed. For women balancing caregiving responsibilities, flexibility and workplace support are often essential, but not always available within construction companies.
Furthermore, many companies rely on traditional, male-focused recruitment channels and don’t actively seek to engage women, missing out on a large pool of talent.
Lastly, the physically intense and sometimes hazardous nature of some construction work facets can be a deterrent for some women, especially when safety gear and facilities are not designed with them in mind.
A growing percentage of workers in the industry are moving towards retirement (a ‘silver tsunami,’ so to speak) along with a decline in younger workers pursuing careers in construction and the trades. This is creating a “perfect storm” for a mass worker shortage–and simultaneously opening doors for women to step into both hands-on and leadership roles.
But it’s not just about addressing a worker shortage. Like many industries, the construction and building industries are changing and evolving, especially with the advent of new technologies such as artificial intelligence, robotics, and augmented reality, all of which are likely to impact how companies in these industries approach new projects. Companies need professionals who understand how these new technologies can impact their business.
Moreover, many women naturally possess certain assets and skills proven to be valuable in any business: strong communication skills, an ability to multitask, a sense of detail-orientedness, strong project management skills, and the ability to build relationships. They also make outstanding mentors for tomorrow's up-and-coming workers, especially since they understand how tough it can be for women in a male-dominated field.
And if that’s not enough to convince construction companies to pay more attention to actively pursuing female workers, studies show that businesses with more gender-diverse workforces achieve greater success and increased profitability. A McKinsey & Company study revealed that companies with more women in their top management roles were 25% more likely to have above-average profitabilities.
Those looking for female-specific training programs can consider the Oakland-based nonprofit Tradeswoman, Inc., as well as the apprentice program offered by the California Department of Industrial Relations.
Many women feel inspired by the determination and perseverance they see in others, which gives them the courage to pursue their own paths. Meet five women who have not only built dynamic careers in construction and related trades but have also become shining examples to other working women of what’s possible.
The construction industry is tightly integrated with many other industries and trades.
Women who earn degrees in construction-related areas of study— such as architecture, interior design, engineering, technology, law, environmental science, urban planning and more are wellpositioned to explore careers in the building industry. These qualifications can open doors to roles within established firms or even inspire women to launch construction-related businesses of their own.
For the trades (electrical, plumbing, carpentry, HVAC, masonry, painting, roofing, etc.) and more traditional construction jobs, the Marin Builders Association maintains robust relationships with several other organizations in the county that offer or support construction training programs, including the Marin County Office of Education, College of Marin, Canal Alliance, the North Bay Construction Corps, plus other organizations.
Nicole Tai refers to herself as an ‘unbuilder’—a simplified term for what she really is: an expert in deconstruction and reuse of materials with a fierce commitment to sustainable building practices. Her company, GreenLynx, which she founded in 2013, is one of the premier green-focused building businesses in the Bay Area—offering deconstruction services, a reclaimed lumber yard, a woodworking shop, and a reuse store that carries everything from fireplace mantels to appliances and more.
As a mostly native Marinite (she grew up both in Mill Valley and on the East Coast and is a graduate of Redwood High School), Nicole’s journey towards launching her own business began with doing hands-on work for her family’s commercial tenant improvement company, where she found herself repurposing building materials and subsequently discovered a knack for environmentally compatible good business practices. She holds dual degrees from UC Berkeley in conservation resource studies and Native American studies, plus a master’s degree in community development from UC Davis.
Nicole, who is the current board president of the Marin Builders Association, also spearheaded the foundation of MBA’s Building
Women group—a female-centric subset in the organization that networks and addresses issues in the building industry from a woman’s perspective.
“Women are the key to changing not just the way we build but the way we interact and think about the process,” she says.
Executive Vice President and Chief Administrative Officer, The Dutra Group
Molly Jacobson has built a distinguished career in heavy civil construction. In 2011, she joined The Dutra Group, one of the nation’s top marine construction firms, as general counsel—bringing with her years of experience as a practicing attorney representing contractors. Her legal expertise in contracts, compliance, and risk management now informs her strategic leadership as Dutra’s executive vice president and chief administrative officer.
In addition to her legal acumen, Molly is a passionate advocate for equity in the construction industry, and in particular, expanding opportunities for women in the trades. “Women represent 50% of the total workforce, but that’s not reflected in the heavy construction industry—so there’s much room for change and

growth,” she says. In 2024, along with Patty Dutra Bruce who leads Dutra’s HR, she co-organized a large group of Dutra’s female employees to attend the Women in Heavy Civil conference in Napa, providing them a true “VIP experience.” Not only did the event foster deeper connections amongst Dutra’s female team members
and other attendees, but it was also a powerful reminder of the invaluable contributions that women make to the entire industry.
Molly encourages women to pursue careers in all areas of construction with confidence. “Be yourself, ask questions, and don’t be afraid to learn,” she advises. “This industry needs diverse voices, and women are key to its future.”
Sara Lopez grew up in Antioch, surrounded by the sound of hammers and compressors. Roofing was central to her family—her grandfather, two uncles, and two cousins were all roofers. Still, to Sara, it never felt like a path meant for her. “As a woman, I didn’t see myself in that world,” she says. “But I was always curious, asking questions and soaking up knowledge from anyone willing to share it, including Brian McLeran, the then-owner of McLeran Roofing.” Sara’s original career plan centered on accounting, and she spent 10 years managing the McLeran Roofing office. Over time, clients and contractors noticed Sara’s industry knowledge and insisted she knew enough to become licensed. Eventually, she agreed with them, pursued and earned her C39 roofing contractor’s license, and never looked back.
When Brian prepared to retire, she nervously asked him if she could buy the business. He said yes. With her husband—who had roofing experience—by her side, Sara took the leap. Today, she is proud to lead McLeran Roofing, honoring the company’s legacy while bringing a fresh perspective to the business.
As for other women considering construction careers, Sara says, “women absolutely belong in the trades. We bring strength, strategy, and heart.” Her advice? “Don’t wait for permission. Ask questions, learn everything, and take the leap. This industry needs more women who believe in themselves—so go for it.”
Gigi Gozzer and Mariajose (MJ) Moreira might be the perfect example of how the power of women supporting each other can create the perfect recipe for success. MJ and Gigi first met during their high school years in Novato. United by their shared dreams, a mutual love of soccer, and resilient spirits shaped by their Peruvian immigrant roots, they became fast friends.
After graduation, both women set out on their own career paths: Gigi remained in the Bay Area and began her construction career in public works but soon followed her passion for luxury residential projects; MJ took off for New York City and later Miami, where she built a successful career in business development and recruitment. It was only when Gigi persuaded MJ to come work with her at WLG Construction that they became business associates. Shortly after, the twosome launched Phaway Construction—a venture that combines their talents and shared passion for construction and design. Together, they have completed projects in the high-end residential, commercial and hospitality spaces.
MJ and Gigi have faced their own set of challenges as a womenowned business, which they continue to navigate on a daily basis. Yet, they continue to remain committed to paving the way for future generations of women to thrive in the field.
“The construction industry is still male-dominated, and it’s vital to have more women not only in administrative roles but also in fieldwork, management, and as licensed professionals,” says MJ. “Women bring valuable skills, perspectives, and leadership to this industry. And while breaking into construction is not always easy, perseverance is key.”
Any woman who is a member of the Marin Builders Association can join the organization’s thriving Building Women group, which connects women both professionally and socially.
The members of Building Women meet each month (usually virtually) where they participate in open discussions on select topics, ask each other for advice, and listen to presentations and marketing pitches. Each quarter, there is an in-person, evening
social event. “It’s become one of our most sought-after groups,” said Christine Puccini, Marin Builders Association’s membership and business development director.
Building Women is the brainchild of MBA member (and current board president) Nicole Tai. “A few years ago, Nicole came up to me at an event, almost a bit teary-eyed, and asked if she could create something specifically for the women members of our association, so she would feel more connected to other women in the organization and create a space where they could support each other,” Christine said. “We started with about 20 members on our list, and it's grown from there to about 300,” she said.
“These are strong, educated, intelligent, ‘making-a-difference’ level of women—and they are not afraid to be a part of this community.”

Positive role models and words of encouragement can go a long way for young women who are considering a career in the building industry. We asked members of the Marin Builders Association what it’s like to be a woman in the construction industry. Here’s what they had to say.
If you met another woman who is considering a career in the construction or building industry, what would you say to encourage her?
"You are a badass, you should definitely do it. How can I help?"
— Amy Atchley, Owner, Amy's Roofing and Solar
"Remember, it's perseverance in the face of adversity that shapes your character and defines your path. So rise with determination, chase your aspirations, and inspire those around you to do the same. The world is filled with possibilities – seize them and make your mark!"
— Alexandra Martinez Villarroel, Owner and Founder, AMV Business Solutions, LLC
"Stand firm, confident , and with excellence in everything. Be completely open and honest with upfront communication, and own your mistakes before someone else “discovers” them. Your character and integrity speak volumes to clients and employers."
— Alisa Hoffman, Principal Designer, DesignSetMatch
"Come to Marin County if you’re looking for a powerful network of women who are leading the way in sustainable design and building!"
— Magda Loczi, Senior Business Development Manager, Marin Sanitary Service
What’s the biggest lesson or takeaway you've learned as a woman working in the construction/building industry?
"Gender does not dictate ability or skill set. I’ve found that when I focus on what I bring to the table—my experience, my work ethic, and my perspective—I gain the respect and trust that matters most."
– Taylor Brown, Director of Operations, Dibble Landscaping
"Each trade has its unique language. To be considered credible among general contractors, electricians, plumbers, landscapers, and all the rest, it's critical to learn each of those languages. Until you do, you will not be invited in as a teammate. A way in is to find a mentor who will show you the way."
— Clare Michael, Founder, Clare Michael Interiors
Why is it important for women who work in the construction industry to support each other?
"When women support each other, they build networks that can open doors to mentorship, career advancement, and new opportunities. This sense of solidarity empowers women to overcome challenges and grow together, ultimately leading to a more balanced and supportive industry."
— Michelle Whiteside, CFO, Whiteside Concrete Construction
"When I started my business, I reached out to another lady roofer (and fellow MBA member), Letitia Hanke. She embraced me without any kind of a ‘scarcity mentality’ and offered me only support and encouragement. Now, we trade referrals back and forth all the time. I now have the bandwidth to pay it forward to new business people."
— Amy Atchley, Owner, Amy's Roofing and Solar
" We’re not in competition with one another. There is enough space for all of us to succeed professionally and personally. Whether in a male-dominated industry or not, women supporting women makes a real difference."
— Taylor Brown, Director of Operations, Dibble Landscaping
"Commit to lifelong learning in this industry…continue to take classes, get certifications, and go to industry shows and events to stay up to date on all things happening, as this industry changes so much."
— Judi Cooper and Natalie Cooper, Mother-Daughter Design Team, Kitchens InsideOut
"Being underestimated is your superpower! After over 45 years in the construction business, I’ve learned that you can learn a lot about a situation by listening first."
– Linda Eales, Founder, Harvest Eco-Salvage
"Over the years, I've developed a rich network of female colleagues who genuinely care about each other, our clients, and the integrity of our work. This supportive ecosystem—which also includes forward-thinking people of all genders—has been instrumental to my success in Marin County."

SOME YEARS AGO, I stumbled across a design philosophy that completely reshaped how I think about the spaces we inhabit. It wasn’t just another trend or aesthetic. It was a way of living—a science-backed approach that merges beauty, biology, and well-being. That philosophy is called biophilic design, and it's changing homes, workplaces, and even healthcare spaces around the world.
At first glance, biophilic design may sound like a fancy term for decorating with plants. But it's far more than that. Rooted in the concept of biophilia—the innate human need to seek connection with nature—this design approach integrates natural elements into our built environments in meaningful and measurable ways. The results? Healthier, happier, more grounded people. >>
Humans have evolved in natural environments, so it makes sense that our brains and bodies respond positively to spaces that reflect the ecosystems in which we have previously thrived.
Environmental psychologists have identified 15 distinct patterns of biophilic design that consistently improve our physical and emotional well-being. When we see water gently rippling, hear birds singing through an open window, or feel the warmth of filtered sunlight on our skin, our bodies relax. Our cortisol levels drop. Our attention sharpens. We feel a little more at home.
Not too surprisingly, there’s been an uptick in interest in biophilic design, especially since the pandemic, with major outlets such as Better Homes and Gardens reporting on its growing popularity.
Biophilic design is organized into three broad categories: Nature in the Space, Natural Analogues, and Nature of the Space.
Nature in the Space
This is the most direct form of biophilia: living plants, flowing water, daylight, and breezes. These elements create multi-sensory experiences that ground us in the present moment. Imagine a window seat flooded with sunlight, a kitchen herb garden within arm's reach, or the gentle burble of a water fountain in the background.
Several patterns fall into this group, including visual and non-visual connections to nature, thermal and airflow variability, and the presence of dynamic light. Even subtle touches—like shifting shadows on a wall— can make a space feel alive and comforting.
This category involves representations of nature rather than nature itself. Here, we tap into the forms, materials, and colors of the natural world. Think of the undulating curves in a hand-carved wood table, the spiral pattern of a seashell echoed in tiles, or textiles that mimic leafy canopies.
This final group explores how spatial arrangement can evoke emotional responses tied to our evolutionary instincts. Do we have a sense of refuge? Can we see into the distance? Is there a mystery waiting around the corner?
Designers use these concepts—Prospect, Refuge, Mystery, Risk/Peril, and Awe—to craft environments that intrigue, protect, and inspire. A reading nook tucked into an alcove provides psychological safety, while a curved hallway that hides what’s ahead stirs curiosity. An infinity pool with a disappearing edge introduces a controlled thrill, while a cathedral-like ceiling inspires awe.
Research shows that biophilic spaces accomplish more than look inviting—they can lower blood pressure, reduce stress, improve cognitive performance, and even promote healing. In schools, biophilic elements have been shown to enhance learning. In offices, they boost productivity and creativity. In homes, they cultivate calm and joy.
Whether you're renovating a home or simply rearranging a room, you can infuse biophilic principles into your everyday life. Start by introducing a variety of sensory elements— a plant, a breeze, the sound of moving water. Choose materials that are authentic and organic. Look for opportunities to create cozy, contemplative nooks or expansive views.
After all, the ultimate luxury in any home isn't what it looks like—it's how it makes you feel.

IN MARIN COUNTY, where median home sizes trend smaller than national averages and real estate commands premium prices, maximizing every square foot isn't just a design preference—it's essential. As an architect working with Bay Area homeowners for more than 15 years, I've witnessed firsthand how thoughtful design transforms modest spaces into extraordinary homes that feel simultaneously spacious and intimate.
The challenge lies not in simply fitting everything into a smaller footprint, but in creating spaces that enhance daily life while maintaining an aesthetic appeal. By carefully considering a home’s layout, natural light, and multi-functional design elements, even the most compact homes can be designed and amended to deliver outsized impact.
Whether you are planning a full home renovation or seeking ways to optimize your current layout, I’ve outlined a few approaches to help you unlock your home's full potential—proving that in architecture, as in life, size isn't everything. It's what you do with it that counts.
In Marin's unique housing landscape, homeowners face a number of challenges: some of these include preserving outdoor views while maximizing an indoor space, adapting older homes to the demands of modern living, and creating flexible spaces to accommodate both work-fromhome needs and family life. As housing costs continue to rise and lot sizes remain constrained, many residents find themselves seeking ways to enhance their existing spaces rather than relocating to another home in the area.
Here are some practical, proven approaches for transforming compact spaces into highly functional homes that reflect Marin's indoor-outdoor lifestyle.
In our fog-prone microclimates, capturing natural light becomes especially crucial for creating spaces that feel expansive and welcoming.
Strategic window placement and glass doors can dramatically transform a home's feel without changing its footprint. They can also capture Marin’s gorgeous views—such as the iconic Mt. Tam—while maintaining privacy.
Enhance natural light penetration, especially for homes on steep lots, by installing skylights, clerestories, and thoughtfully placed openings.
Embrace design techniques that blur indoor-outdoor boundaries, effectively expanding living space into the landscape through sliding glass walls, level thresholds, and continuous materials.
Many Marin homes were built in eras when living patterns differed substantially from today's needs. Converting these spaces to support contemporary lifestyles requires reimagining how rooms function and relate to one another.
Converting traditional compartmentalized layouts into open, fluid spaces that suit contemporary family life through strategic wall removal and space reconfiguration.
Creating flexible rooms that serve multiple purposes: home office by day, guest room by night through adding convertible furniture, Murphy beds, and adaptable storage solutions.
Incorporating storage solutions that preserve the clean aesthetic valued in Marin while accommodating reallife needs through built-ins, hidden compartments, and furniture that does double duty.
In Marin's competitive real estate market, thoughtful renovations can yield significant returns while improving daily living experiences.
Focus on high-impact improvements that deliver strong returns in Marin's competitive market, such as kitchen updates, bathroom refreshes, and indoor-outdoor connections.
Use sustainable design solutions to reduce energy costs while appealing to environmentally conscious buyers. This can include improved insulation, energy-efficient windows, and passive heating/cooling strategies.
Embrace strategic renovations that respect historical character. It’s possible to bring modern functionality into older homes around the county while preserving the charm that makes them so unique.
These principles come to life in the two recent local projects we completed. Both projects show how intentional design transforms living experiences.
In the first project, "A Little Luxury," we reimagined a modest 1,500-square-foot home to make it feel more expansive by enhancing its spatial flow rather than adding square footage. By removing the
wall between the dining and living areas, we were able to improve the home’s natural light penetration while maintaining its functional zones.
The project's centerpiece—a multi-purpose panel wall—exemplifies smart space utilization. This single element conceals essential utilities, provides convenient storage for entertaining essentials, and offers an elegant display surface for art. This project proves that thoughtful planning often outperforms expansion when it comes to improving home functionality.
A second project, "Mt. Tam Majestic," illustrates how design can create meaningful connections between home and landscape.
This 2,875-square-foot residence's redesign prioritized the iconic views that make many Marin properties so desirable. The kitchen renovation opened up the line of sight to interior living areas and offered views of mountain vistas. The design thoughtfully balances open-sight lines with discreet storage solutions, resulting in a space that feels both visually uncluttered and highly functional.
In this renovation, the new lounge area we created adjacent to the kitchen established social spaces to support both intimate family gatherings and larger entertaining. In the primary suite, we challenged conventional layouts by keeping

the sleeping space open to a spa-like bathroom, with the shower and vanity serving as sculptural elements. The design incorporated a dedicated cat passageway as a special feature—transforming the practical necessity of pet accommodation into a thoughtful architectural element that adds character.
For both projects, we paid careful attention to materials, craftsmanship, and architectural integrity to enhance both homes' value beyond the renovation costs. By focusing on quality rather than quantity, we were able to deliver sizeable returns to the properties, both financially and experientially.
For Marin homeowners contemplating renovation or seeking to optimize current spaces, consider first asking yourself these key questions:
1. How does natural light move through your home throughout the day?
2. Which spaces feel restrictive, and why?
3. What functions must your home support now and in the coming years?
4. Which views or connections to the outdoors could be enhanced?
5. What storage needs remain unmet in your current configuration?
By approaching a renovation with these considerations in mind, and partnering with design professionals who understand Marin’s distinct context, even the most modest homes can deliver extraordinary living experiences—proving that thoughtful design truly creates small spaces with big impact.

YOUR HOME IS more than a collection of rooms—it's the keeper of your family's story. That cherished dining table where three generations gather for Sunday dinners, the sun-drenched corner perfect for your grandfather's armchair, the kitchen layout that recalls summers in Lake Tahoe—these elements transform houses into homes that resonate with personal meaning.
As a Marin County architect, I've learned that the most compelling homes aren't just welldesigned spaces; they also contain physical narratives of the lives lived within their walls. When we understand how to translate personal stories into architectural elements,
we create homes that not only function beautifully but also feel deeply connected to their inhabitants.
Marin has a diverse and historically rich architectural landscape, ranging from Victorian gems in San Rafael to modern retreats in Mill Valley. Details of Craftsman homes speak to the Arts and Crafts movement, features in midcentury houses capture the optimism of post-war California, and Victorian elements connect to the county's early days.
Existing architectural elements, especially of the county’s older homes, need not be constrained—they can serve as launching points for personal expression. By identifying the key historical features in a home that are worth preserving, you can create a foundation for your home's evolving story while honoring its past.
Your travels, family traditions, and daily rituals deserve space in your home's design. Consider how architectural elements can physically manifest your story:
• A built-in display cabinet can hold treasures collected during family travels
• A kitchen island can be designed to accommodate multi-generational cooking sessions
• A well-positioned reading nook is able to capture the same quality of light you remember from childhood summers For example, we worked with one Marin couple who incorporated a Japaneseinfluenced garden that seamlessly integrated with their Craftsman home. This honored both the architectural vocabulary of the region and their personal connection to Japanese design principles, which they absorbed during years of living abroad.
Historic homes often present unique challenges when adapting to modern living patterns. The key is finding solutions that respect architectural integrity while creating spaces that work for today's families.
A Victorian kitchen, for instance, can maintain its period charm through preserved moldings and traditional cabinetry styles while incorporating discreetly placed modern appliances and thoughtful space planning that supports contemporary cooking and entertaining habits.
Your home should grow with you. Designing flexible spaces ensures your home continues to tell your story as it unfolds:
• Home offices constructed with built-ins that convert to guest accommodations when needed
• First-floor spaces built to adapt to aging-in-place needs
• Children's areas designed to evolve from playrooms to teen retreats, and later to hobby spaces
These thoughtful architectural decisions allow your home to remain relevant and meaningful through life's transitions.
Before beginning a project, consider these questions:
• Which elements of your home's existing architecture resonate most deeply with you?
• Which family traditions or daily rituals should your home support?
• How might your needs evolve over the next 5, 10, or 20 years?
Share these reflections with your design professional, along with images, stories, or objects that represent meaningful experiences to you. This information helps translate abstract concepts into tangible design solutions.
By approaching home design as storytelling, you and your architectural design team can create spaces that are both personally meaningful and architecturally significant.
Whether you're updating a historic property or building a new one, these insights will help you create a home that authentically tells your story while contributing to Marin's rich architectural tapestry.
Your home is your story—make sure it's one that resonates with who you are, where you've been, and how you want to live.
Heather Wright Foye is the founder of Wright Architecture, which transforms homes into personal sanctuaries that tell your unique story. Through thoughtful collaboration, Wright Architecture crafts residential spaces that enhance daily living and foster a deeper connection to home. wright-arch.com
The Marin Builders Association congratulates John Busick as the 2024 recipient of the Peter Arrigoni Building Community Leadership Award. This award recognizes individuals for excellence in both industry leadership and community involvement and was established in 2018 in honor of the late Peter Arrigoni who served as General Manager of the Marin Builders Association from 1977 to 2003.
John Busick is a fifthgeneration painter and the CEO of Kunst Painting Inc.—a premiere residential and small-commercial painting company headquartered in San Rafael.
In keeping with family tradition, John is extremely active in the local community and a recognized member of many professional and nonprofit organizations. He served on the board of directors for the Marin Builders Association for more than a decade, including as president of the board in 2017.
In addition to his industry work in Marin, John Busick is known as a progressive leader in the broader construction community. He has held several leadership roles, including his recent position as treasurer of the National Board for PDCA (Painting and Decorating
Contractors of America), a trade association dedicated to the success of painting and decorating contractors.
John's great-great-greatgrandfather, Henrik Kunst, immigrated to the United States in 1880. During his migration out

" John epitomizes the spirit of the Marin Builders Association, giving back comes first.
— Rick Wells Marin Builders Association CEO
Philanthropy runs deep in the Kunst family. His grandfather, Bob Kunst, taught John at an early age to give back to the community.
For the Miracle League North Bay, Kunst Painting played a big role in creating the Miracle League field and playground at Lucchesi Park in Petaluma—a custom-designed, rubberized turf field that accommodates wheelchairs, and other assertive devices while helping to prevent injuries. This innovative new space is open to all North Bay residents and was completed in 2021.
John is one of the founders and active board members of Down Syndrome Association North Bay, a group that promotes self-advocacy, raises awareness, furthers educational pursuits, and supports the
inclusion of individuals with Down syndrome and their families throughout the North Bay. John and his wife, Angela founded the Voices 4 Down Syndrome gala in 2014. Since its inception, Voices 4 Down Syndrome has raised over $500,000 for Down Syndrome Association North Bay.

That core business eventually branched into two smaller, successful businesses run by family members. In 2024, John Busick merged the two separately run companies—Kunst
mid-size businesses just like his. Now, everything from sales and project management to timekeeping, job costing, and reporting lives on a single, easyto-use platform—so his business, as well as other businesses, can finally run smoother without the tech headache.
In 1958, Bob Kunst was one of the original founding members of the Marin Builders Association and eventually served as one of its presidents. 67 years later, Bob’s legacy of giving back to the building industry and the greater community remains stronger than ever with John Busick.

Contributor:
JUST OVER ONE year ago, the Marin County Board of Supervisors approved the creation of a new position in our county: permit ombudsperson. This new position was created as a result of ongoing community feedback from those entities applying for building permits—usually homeowners, contractors, architects, or engineers—which showed that the process of permit submission in Marin County was time-consuming, complex, and often frustrating.
I am honored to have been selected for this new role, which began in August 2024, and encompasses the following county departments: Planning, Building and Safety, Environmental Health Services, Department of Public Works, and Fire.
As the county’s new ombudsperson, my core work is to assist anyone who has applied for any type of permit and subsequently have found themselves stuck in the permit process. Whichever stage you are in the permitting process, I can help, whether that involves working through communication challenges with staff from multiple departments, offering clarity on why you are being asked for certain pieces of information and documentation, understanding the need for—and process behind—inspections, and more.
My role is to help keep the permit process moving and offer guidance to applicants on the next steps. Simply put, I get your unstuck and back on track.
In addition, my job as an ombudsperson is to examine our current permitting process and make recommendations to help streamline the end-to-end experience. Our goal, as a county, is to improve it as much as possible. To that end, I always encourage applicants to provide feedback whenever possible. In 2025, I’ll be sending out surveys to walk-in customers and customers who have used our electronic permit filing process and self-service portal.
Legally permitted construction projects are very important in Marin County, promoting healthy and safe building environments. I'm here to help you get your project moving in a positive direction and stay involved until you hit the finish line.
Please contact me at Cristy.Stanley@ MarinCounty.gov should you require my assistance.

Our new house came with glowing promises, but those were shattered immediately when we were sued by one of their unpaid suppliers. KWCL not only got us out of that AND got all our expenses and fees paid, but, when defects began appearing, KWCL assembled a credible and practical team of experts that was able to find all the buried and serious shortcuts and defects. KWCL got us a recovery that paid for it.”
KWCL's team has humor, tenacity, and industry insights that got us to a place we don't think any other firm could have. KWCL chased the Developer's team over every hurdle they dodged behind (including serious and arcane damage theories and insurance coverage!), and got them to pay for ALL our repairs and loss of use, and all our litigation expenses. KWCL then even worked with our repair team to assure they got it right.”
KWCL helped our Construction Co. defend several devastating claims and salvaged p oblem projects; then after saving our business, guided us on improving our practices so that won’t happen again. Now we start every project with a KWCL ‘check-in’ and have happy customers as a result.”
Same-day or next-day delivery, diversion reporting for LEED and C&D compliance, and tailored, customerfirst service that’s flexible and fast.
Fully bonded and insured, materials are ‘cross-cut’ for confidentiality, we destroy paper as well as CD’s, X-rays and more—100% of paper recycled.
At Marin Sanitary Service, we know this place—because we live and work here too. Our debris boxes and shredding services are designed with Marin’s homes, hillsides and habits in mind. Resource Recovery is more than a tagline—it’s our mission. MARIN-OWNED.
Let’s build (and conserve) better, together.
