What is Digital Manufacturing Week? Organised by the team behind the UK’s premier manufacturing magazine, The Manufacturer, Digital Manufacturing Week is all set to be bigger than ever. Already the UK’s largest gathering of the senior leaders of manufacturing, last year saw over 4,000 people attend the various events and this year we are set to welcome 6,000 people to Liverpool. There are a myriad of events throughout the week, including dinners, workshops, receptions, demos and factory tours, but the four core events are: Manufacturing Leaders’ Summit is the UK’s largest manufacturing conference, and has been helping set the industrial innovation agenda for the past 10 years. More important than ever, this event provides the vital insight, data and guidance that manufacturers need to secure their businesses for the digital transformation that lies ahead. Smart Factory Expo brings together expertise, ideas, technology and opportunity – the UK’s showcase for the

Digital Manufacturing Week 13 - 16 November 2018

Fourth Industrial Revolution. Six distinct Visitor Zones provide show attendees with self-contained platforms to engage with world class exhibitors, innovative start-ups and experiencesharing sessions from some of the most exciting names in UK manufacturing and digitalisation. Every year we scour the length and breadth of the land to find The Manufacturer Top 100 – individuals with a track record of success against the odds. Each recipient has their compelling story – but what they have in common is that they are inspirational role models for the whole sector. The Manufacturer Manufacturing Excellence Awards – the biggest annual celebration in the industry’s calendar, attracting hundreds of nominations – but resulting in only 14 winners. Bring your team and your key clients and prospects, book a table alongside the best-of-the-best … and be inspired to nominate yourselves in 2019.

The future of UK manufacturing Digital Manufacturing Week is proud to call Liverpool home. Behind the city’s internationally-famous façade, is a less-wellknown story – Liverpool, and the wider North West region, is the largest manufacturing economy in the country, and a world-class centre of excellence for advanced manufacturing.

Manufacturing Leaders’ Summit and Smart Factory Expo; 50% more exhibitors; dozens more satellite events ranging from Directors’ Forum Dinners to Breakfast Briefings and Night Summits; and on track to welcome 50% more attendees over the course of the week.

This makes it the perfect backdrop to Digital Manufacturing Week, a national celebration of the future of UK manufacturing organised by The Manufacturer magazine.

There’s a lot going on, and I appreciate it is a lot to take in – which is why we have created new opportunities for visitors to find the people, advice and solutions that will make the most difference to their operations in 2019.

As we look ahead to November, it’s worth noting that contrary to all predictions – UK manufacturing is riding high: UK Manufacturing PMI is up and robustly positive. Manufacturing employment is up. Manufacturing salaries are up. Manufacturing exports are up. Manufacturing profits are up. This confidence has spilled over into Digital Manufacturing Week – with twice the number of content stages at

Whether you follow one of our Visitor Trails (themed itineraries), join the Consultants’ Clinics for free professional advisory consultations, or meet with passionate subject matter experts at Speakers’ Corner – there is something new to help you and your team take full advantage of the digital manufacturing opportunity. Come get some.

Institute for Manufacturing Workshops PRIORITISING AND SELECTING THE BEST INNOVATION OPPORTUNITIES In a way that fits with your strategic objectives Date: 15 November 2018 Digitalisation can offer a multitude of opportunities and challenges for manufacturing organisations. The ongoing technological developments regarding sensors, connectivity, the Internet of Things and Big Data form important building blocks for successful transformation, but must not be mistaken for the transformation itself. There is therefore a great deal of potential for gaining competitive advantage as well as for losing ground rapidly in what is a highly dynamic market environment. Ongoing research at the IfM has developed scoring methods for evaluating and selecting technology & innovation projects, which are already being successfully deployed across a range of sectors and sizes of manufacturing businesses around the world.

AUTOMATION ASSESSMENT To automate or not? That is the question… Date: 15 November 2018 Automation can be the answer to a whole host of manufacturing and operations questions. But deciding what, how and when to automate is not straightforward, and getting it wrong can be expensive and highly visible. We have developed a structured Automation Assessment tool to support you in this decision making. This practical workshop will help you understand the benefits of this approach and demonstrate the impact it can have using project case studies from organisations like Jaguar Land Rover, Foxconn and Schlumberger.

DISCOVER THE BENEFITS OF ROADMAPPING FOR STRATEGIC PLANNING Bring together expertise from across your organisation to define a strategy for the future Date: 14 November 2018 Roadmapping is a powerful strategic planning technique that is integral to creating and delivering strategic and technology planning. This workshop will help you understand how strategic roadmapping could benefit your organisation. You’ll understand the graphic and collaborative nature of roadmapping and how this facilitates strategic alignment and dialogue between functions from across your organisation. This handson workshop will guide you through a roadmapping template, showing how it can help your organisation align technological and commercial objectives, as well as detailing our fast-start, resource-efficient approaches to developing roadmaps.

MAPPING YOUR BUSINESS ECOSYSTEM TO CAPTURE VALUE Putting customers at the heart of everything you do Date: 14 November 2018

P yo LAC en ur ES su exp AR re o E pr tic LIM io ke IT rit t E y to D! bo d G ok ay et in to g.

Every company is unique; what works for one business will not work for another. Your company has unique customers and operates in a unique business ecosystem. The key is to deeply understand and explore the relationships within your ecosystem and to then use this knowledge to leverage it to your advantage. The Cambridge Ecosystem Mapping Framework enables identification of value relationships between members of an ecosystem, and analysis of how that value could be increased for mutual benefit. This practical workshop will explore the framework and the importance of your business ecosystem and why it’s vital for maintaining competitive advantage, value creation and service delivery. NOTE: These are free workshops organised by the Institute for Manufacturing (IfM), University of Cambridge. The IfM’s mission is to manufacture a better world through the impact of our research and education activities on the manufacturing community. To support this objective, we are only accepting bookings from manufacturing and technology organisations for this workshop - we will not be accepting bookings from consultancies.

Show Highlights

Jonny Williamson Editor of TheManufacturer.com

For the first time ever, The Manufacturer will be broadcasting live from the heart of Smart Factory Expo. From our studio located within Innovation Alley, my Editorial colleagues and I will be bringing you all the action and interviewing a veritable who’s who of industrial business owners, decision-makers and experts. We’ll be promoting their successes, discussing where they see future opportunities and unpicking what keeps them up at night. I’d love for you to be involved - contact me via j.williamson@hennikgroup.com in advance, or come to the Studio on the day.

Speakers’ Corner, sponsored by SAP Get up close and personal to presenters sharing their passion projects with show attendees at the SAP Speakers’ Corner. Featuring manufacturers, entrepreneurs, Industry 4.0 advocates, and the women and men who have reached the top of their profession, and who now want to send the lift down for the next generation – Speakers’ Corner is a deliberately informal presentation-and-networking space, that allows speakers and listeners to interact with one another. With space for no more than 20 people at a time, be sure to check out the speakers on the event app – or on the signage alongside Speakers’ Corner on the show floor.

Hack & Pitch Competition Hack & Pitch competition offers an opportunity for larger manufacturing companies to engage directly with exciting new enterprises developing cutting-edge solutions around smart factories. This year Unilever and Sellafield are each setting an industrial challenge for start-up teams to engage with – the brainstorming occurs on 14 November, in full view of visitors to Smart Factory Expo, and the shortlisted teams will publicly ‘pitch’ their innovative solutions on the afternoon of 15 November. Come along and watch innovation in action! Companies will be asked to ‘Hack’ together proposals to address these challenges, before making their ‘Pitch’ to decision-makers.

Stream Day Two Highlights 2.45pm 15 November Digital Transformation Andy Schofield, Head of Manufacturing, BAE Systems – Military Air and Information

2.45pm 15 November, Big Data Marco Del Seta, Head of Digital, BOC

What does the future of aerospace manufacturing look like? Andy gives us a closer look at the challenges facing the aerospace manufacturing industry and the strategies being adopted to address them.

Are any of us really playing in the big data space? Manufacturing and other traditional industries rarely do real big data analysis, sometimes invest in infrastructure they don’t need, then struggle to get value; often they lack the infrastructure altogether. How do we move past this? Do we really need to? Marco will look at needs and solutions and discuss some real cases where BOC has begun to leverage data for growth and efficiency.

2.15pm 15 November, Talent Management Alison Beard-Gunter, CI Manager, Accolade Wines

Quality responsive interfaces and accurate, timely feedback already unlock our latent cognitive energies and need for challenge and social interaction – this can be seen in how we interact with any number of digitised social systems and games.  But how well are these realised in the work place and what else do we need to enable our people to accelerate Continuous Improvement in the digital age?

2.45pm 15 November, Industrial Automation Ed Preston, Global Automation Lead, GKN Aerospace

GKN has been going through a period of change - we now look to our existing portfolio to consider the automation of legacy aircraft structures to improve productivity. A successful example of this has been the introduction of the Airbus A330neo Outer Wing Box. People have paved the way to successful automation: arranging the right people for stakeholder support, finding the right people to be in the team, and picking the right suppliers to work with.
