Motion to close selections committee fails Effort followed Manitoban document requests MALAK ABAS, STAFF

A

motion to close off UMSU selections committee meetings from public scrutiny failed by only a few votes Thursday after members expressed concern the changes would create a less transparent union.

The motion suggested selections committee meetings be held in closed session, making them inaccessible to members outside the committee “given the sensitivity of the items often discussed,” unless otherwise decided.

The last selections committee meeting, held Jan. 28, included applications and decisions on appointments to one governance committee position, one judicial board representative position, two judicial board member-at-large positions and the appointment of several uncontested applicants to several committees.

The board was initially to vote on a motion that would restructure multiple committees along with closing the selections committee process, but UMSU president Jakob Sanderson proposed to separate the clause specifically focused on closing selections committee meetings into a separate motion and for it to be voted on separately, which passed.

The motion was brought forward shortly after the union fulfilled a request by the Manitoban to turn over a number of student union documents, including minutes from selection committee meetings and credit card and budgetary statements.

The requests were initially denied

by Sanderson, who argued UMSU’s governing documents barred their release. When it was discovered they were open information, UMSU provided them.

The motion eventually failed, including several abstentions from the board, but there is a possibility for the motion to be brought forward at a later date.

U of M community gathers after mosque shootings

tudents, faculty and members of the university community gathered in mourning Monday, days after terror attacks in two mosques in Christchurch, New Zealand, took the lives of 50 Muslims.

The Muslim Students’ Association (MSA) collaborated with the Pakistani Students’ Association, the Bangladeshi Students’ Association and the University’s Spiritual Care Centre to hold a vigil in remembrance of the lives lost.

Speakers ranged from across communities and faiths, and included members of the university’s Indigenous, Jewish and Hindu communities.

MSA external affairs director and former Manitoban reporter Qudus Abusaleh gave the opening remarks, and condemned “xenophobia, Islamophobia and discrimination in all of its forms.”

He commended the work done by the Muslim community and its allies.

UMSU president Jakob Sanderson called time he spent at the on-campus mosque “one of the most beautiful experiences that [he] had at the University of Manitoba.”

“To see someone walk into such a welcoming, special place and commit this act should be taken as an act against all of us,” he said. “And I think the amount of people who have showed up today in solidarity with the community on campus and around the world hopefully shows that that is true.”

Abusaleh encouraged those in attendance to be active in their advocacy efforts.

“Any response is good, but now, it’s time for all of us to be proactive,” he said.

n its ongoing bid to leave the Canadian Federation of Students, UMSU has set up a website encouraging students to “demand better” use of their fees.

The website, demandbetter. ca, notes U of M students have spent over $4 million on fees to the Canadian Federation of Students since 2007. Members of UMSU currently pay $7.61 per term to the federation.

UMSU preps flex parking Executive transition plans in the works, Student Life co-ordinator hired TY BRASS, STAFF

U

MSU plans for a flexible parking pass have finally come to fruition, with parking services set to launch a pilot program in September, 2019.

The program will offer students the choice to purchase a parking pass that covers either Monday, Wednesday and Friday, or Tuesday and Thursday.

Regular full-time parking passes will still be available.

UMSU vice-president external Owen Black said the future of the flexible pass will be determined based on its success next year.

“Parking services plans to pilot, see how successful it is, and they’ll use that trial year to sort of determine what that program will look like in the future,” he said.

Annual parking passes for students currently cost $592 for the Fort Garry campus. Student parking permits are valid from Sept. 1 to April 30 of each year.

It is currently not known how much the flexible parking passes will cost.

Executive transition plan tabled

A motion setting forth guidelines for the UMSU executive transition process was tabled at the board meeting Thursday, after concerns were raised that it is not yet ready.

The motion, which was set forward by the UMSU governance committee, proposes to add a mandate to UMSU’s governing documents requiring outgoing executives to provide transition support to their replacements, including a report with recommendations on improving the posi-

tion for incoming executives and a mandatory week of job-shadowing before they take on the position.

Black, who moved to stay the motion, said it should be ready within the next few weeks.

“When we submitted this motion, that was before we had done the work, and right now we’re in the midst of the work,” he said.

“So we’re just wanting to hold off until we completely figure out exactly what is the best way to move forward in transitioning executives, so that’s why we’ve tabled it for now.”

The midst of the work, Black said, involves reaching out to relevant UMSU bodies and consulting outside resources, including the outgoing strategies of other student unions.

“We’re actually working with our government research advisor to examine other unions’ transition policies, and we’re actually meeting with an external body, or external consultants, to examine what are the best ways to transition executives.”

Black said the final motion will be similar to the one withdrawn.

“We don’t expect any huge changes. We’re just sort of locking down before we pass it.”

Of the current serving executives, two — Black and vicepresident student services Carly Mastromonaco — will not be returning for another term.

Student Life department hires new co-ordinator

U of M director of student engagement and academic success Brandy Usick invited Mastromonaco to join a hiring

panel to choose the new student life department co-ordinator.

The panel, which also consisted of director of career services Gail Langlais, eventually decided on a successful candidate, Sarah Saunders, who will serve as the only full-time staff member of the student life department.

The student life department, according to the department’s website, “offers learning and personal development opportunities” to students through community engagement.

Mastromonaco said the hiring comes from a decision from the student life department “to keep student life alive,” beginning with Saunders’s hiring.

“There isn’t really a clear view on where they want to go in terms of what kind of staff is going to be working under her and how they are going to do that hiring, but that it’s very open for discussion,” said Mastromonaco.

“From this point on, they are going to look into implementing jobs that work under her, and work to engage students, and give students the opportunities to get work experience and volunteer experience and stuff like that before they go onto the workforce.”

In her report to the UMSU board of directors, it is noted that the student life department is “currently figuring out how to fit itself within student affairs and the larger university community as a whole.”

Nairn said the pursuit of creating a more sustainable environment is something every student should understand and work toward.

“Sustainability is essentially something that affects everybody in the world, regardless of your educational background, economic background, anything — it’s something that’s going to impact us a lot in the future,” said Nairn.

“It’s really important that students understand that everything that you’re doing on campus is affecting the world. That’s hard to grasp, but we really have to look at our actions that we’re doing in our mini-city at the U of M, and kind of making it a better, more sustainable place, and U of M, being that little city, has the opportunity to really be leaders in sustainability.

“It’s just kind of finding the best ways to go about doing that.”

Sustainability week comes to the U of M

A criminal charge against a former U of M professor accused of sexually assaulting a student have been stayed by prosecutors.

Steve Kirby, who taught jazz in the Desautels faculty of music before he quietly retired in June 2017, was charged over the summer related to an alleged incident involving a student.

The charges were stayed in early March with consideration of the victim in mind, a Crown prosecutor told the Winnipeg Free Press last week.

A two-day trial was scheduled for June. It was expected the alleged victim would have to testify.

The U of M came under criticism for its handling of sexual harassment allegations agains Kirby, a world-renowned jazz bassist who had been recruited to the university in 2003.

After retiring from the U of M, Kirby was hired by Berklee College in Boston, Mass., with a positive recommendation from the U of M. It was reported in November, 2017, that he had been terminated after former students told the school of their experience with Kirby.

ithin a week of each other, the U of M has published two new guidelines for university employees on how to conduct themselves appropriately toward students and each other, and UMSU released a statement on the union’s contribution to sexual violence policy reform on campus.

These measures come after a turbulent period for the university, with several allegations of sexual misconduct from faculty toward students coming to light in the last two years.

UMSU released a statement Monday highlighting the recommendations it made toward the U of M’s respectful work and learning environment (RWLE) and sexual violence policies, including expanding on confidentiality policies and broadening the scope of the policies to focus on “sexual violence” more than specifically focusing on sexual assault.

The statement, written by UMSU vice-president advocacy Sarah Bonner-Proulx, said that after having viewed drafts of the new policies, the union can “say that the university deserves credit for the steps it has taken so far to correct its flawed policies. But that is only the beginning.”

“So many Indigenous students, not just from UMISA but outside, have advocated for Indigenous languages,” she said.

“And for somebody who has not bothered to come to one meeting at all, who is more than welcome — Indigenous students are more than welcome to join us in this movement — but to co-opt everything we’ve said and done for the past two years and pass it as their own, without giving any recognition to the students who have been working so hard, tirelessly, toward getting Indigenous languages here.”

Sanderson, who pointed out during the campaign that he is

“In terms of the Indigenous language issue, yeah, certainly Indigenous leaders on campus and around the world have been doing a lot of excellent work on Indigenous languages,” he said.

“I’m not saying I’m the only person that’s ever come up with it,” he said, “but I certainly did come up with this by myself, in a meeting with our Indigenous representative and UMSU vice-president external, when we were brainstorming on Indigenous lobby priorities. This was an idea I suggested.”

Mckay also accused Sanderson of “coming to events just for the sole purpose of political gain,” a concern she said had been expressed by both Indigenous students and faculty on campus.

“It was seen like he passed these initiatives as his own during this election, and Jakob Sanderson, obviously, has never expressed wanting to take part in these initiatives, but then coopting that as something new.”

Sanderson said the other Indigenous advocacy work he campaigned on, creating an Indigenous awareness month, included mentions of collaboration with Indigenous groups on campus.

“We had two primary policy planks that focused on Indigenousspecific issues — one of those was the Indigenous awareness month,” he said.

It’s time Pallister learns some self-accountability

Meaningful policy never stems from blaming others KENNY INGRAM, STAFF

A

hallmark of Brian Pallister’s premiership has been to seek out who to blame when important issues go unaddressed. Watching Pallister duck responsibility and deflect blame evokes the inquisitive words of Men at Work, “Who can it be now?”

Pallister has thrown blame at the feet of the NDP for the move of Cabella’s distribution centre to Calgary, graffiti on the constituency office of a Tory MLA and more.

When the media reported Pallister’s government was hinting at an early election call, Pallister blamed the media saying he would not be “throwing a sandbag, then calling an election like a previous certain government did back a few years ago.”

Sadly, this approach to gaining power is successful. There are many demagogues in high-ranking positions around the world

But the blame does not end there.

Pallister has implied reports made by mayor Brian Bowman that the province is pulling funds for sewage-treatment upgrades are nothing more than fiction. This has led him to refuse to even meet with the mayor.

Worst of all, Pallister has had the unhealthy obsession of playing the blame game with Ottawa. This first came up in 2017 when Pallister blamed Ottawa for threatening to kill a research facility. Pallister was the last holdout premier in the country to sign a healthcare funding agreement over transfer payments.

The blame continued in 2018 when Pallister forced Manitoba out of the federal government carbon pricing plan, blaming the federal government for not respecting the rights of provinces. The reality was he wanted a watered-down plan of $25 per tonne which would only go halfway toward

the federal plan.

In the short term, this blaming may have served Pallister well. After spending a significant percentage of his campaign blaming the Manitoba NDP over provincial debt, he became the premier of Manitoba. The issue is he seems to have forgotten he won the election and now has the power to do a lot. Instead, Pallister is content to simply blame others.

It is obvious Pallister is a pathological blame artist and this impulsive behaviour is now in full swing.

Just last year, during a dispute over the state of tendered city contracts, Pallister did not hesitate in throwing his infrastructure minister right under the bus when he said, “If the minister made the mess he’ll clean it up, not the premier.”

Pallister seems to have forgotten the reason he works in the Manitoba legislature: to be a public servant. In order to be successful in serving the public, governments must work together — not just within their own party and cabinet, but at the local, provincial and federal levels.

While Pallister could be addressing real issues like the opioid epidemic, the disastrous state of unaffordable prescription drugs and the unaffordable, unregulated industry of child care, he avoids all but a word of discussion on them.

Instead, it seems he resorts to grandstanding and flexing his ego to local and federal officials to further excite his fanatical base.

In the end, the entire population suffers from this divisive approach to politics. Politicians begin to believe the only hope of a winning campaign is a campaign of negative attacking and meaningless platitudes.

All while constituents come to expect a campaign and governance not based on crafting meaningful policy, but rather in ostentatious displays of power.

Sadly, this approach to gaining power is successful. There are many demagogues in high-ranking positions around the world.

Manitobans should mobilize in support of accountability and reject Pallister’s blame politics.

Plenty of opportunities exist, whether through standalone postings or broader summer work programs.

Cast your net wide and apply for a few to keep your options open.

Remember, a tailored, well-written resumé and cover letter made specifically for the job you are applying for is an excellent strategy to get an interview.

Here are some ways to find a great summer job this year.

Canada Summer Jobs

Canada Summer Jobs is providing funding to various employers to hire about 70,000 young workers this summer. Employers will find out

whether they are funded in April, so expect postings to begin popping up this spring on jobank.gc.ca.

Applicants must be between 15 and 30 years of age and legally allowed to work in Canada.

Postings are not always clearly marked as part of the Canada Summer Jobs program, so try searching keywords on the governmentoperated Job Bank website related to the eligibility criteria, such as variations of “15-30” or “summer.”

Previous employers funded by this program in 2017 included Genome Prairie, Sierra Leone Refugee Resettlement, Inc., and about 20 positions at the University of Manitoba.

Urban/Hometown Green Team

The Manitoba government funds non-profit organizations and municipal governments to hire youth each summer who are 15 to 29 years old and entitled to work in Canada.

Jobs funded by this program are often outdoors, but not always.

Expect to see jobs focusing on conservation, trail enhancement, community beautification and children.

In 2018, there were plenty of positions available at local community centres, churches, camps and sports associations.

onservatives have historically sought to address family decay, monopolization of industry and fading localism.

Those are issues conservatives are right to be concerned with. And conservatives spend plenty of time lamenting them. However, the new wave of socialists cropping up around the world have offered robust critiques of these issues.

In fact, it seems modern-day conservatism has abandoned attempts to develop actionable solutions to these problems while the new wave of socialists around the world have made them the centre of their platform.

Clean those lenses, spark the lights and ready the clapper board because it’s time to make a movie.

For the eighth time, the U of M’s film production class is writing, filming and editing a feature length film. This class runs every two years, with a course in camera acting and directing happening every other year. This year’s project is titled Windfall.

This course is currently taught by George Toles, the head of the film department, with assistance from Jim Agapito, who acts as a technical supervisor, and Manitoban video editor Paymun Nematollahi, who is this year’s teaching assistant.

Kirsty Cameron, a PhD student in the English department, and Jonah Wilde, a fourth-year film studies major, participate by supervising writing workshops in the early stages of the film. The script is adapted by students from an existing public domain story, with various class members taking different roles such as writing a draft, constructing different story acts, confirming continuity and more. While Cameron and Wilde help facilitate conversation, the creative work is done entirely by the students.

While the teaching, assistance and knowledge that figures like Toles and Agapito provide is invaluable, it must also be mentioned that a large portion of responsibility and work is taken up by the members

This course is not only meant to be an ambitious creative exercise, but also to simulate the conditions of a working film set.

Students take on various leadership roles, direct, write, act and work to provide organization and outside funding for the project. The class films the bulk of the movie over spring break, working 12-hour days. At the end of each day, the students participate in something called a “lemon session,” a time where they can sit down, decompress and air any questions or concerns that may have arisen over the course of the work day.

Of the eight different classes that have made their way through this course, each class’s film has been completed.

As a prior film production student, and a member of Manitoba’s filmmaking community, I cannot stress the importance of a course like this enough. With the solidification of the Manitoba film tax credit, and the increased funding towards it, the business of filmmaking in Manitoba is growing. A course like this not only provides friendship, guidance and knowledge, but also truly employable skills in an industry that has an ever-growing presence in our city.

Everyone was so hyped up about the last song before the encore that the crowd kept singing the background vocals demanding the band to return to the stage. Not only did they run back on after a mere 30 seconds, they picked up what the crowd was singing and went right back into the track and later on, the

encore. Front row fans slapped the stage, begging for more while Riebl crawled towards them, egging them on and continuing with another three songs. From the opening notes to one final jump off the drum kit, the Cat Empire delivered a show that left fans exhilarated.

With the band’s 20th anniversary

coming up in a few years, Riebl said they plan on simply enjoying their current tour until they reach the important milestone in their career.

“We see our own music in a different light.”

Ballet and the Band will also feature Bare, choreographed by Jera Wolf with music by Luke Howard, and Miroir, choreographed by Mark Godden with music by Maurice Ravel.

Certain characters occasionally stray close to being one-dimensional, as some of them act more as instrumental representatives of different perspectives on the conflict without getting their stories fleshed out.

Others, such as Rochelle, have particularly heart-wrenching passages, delving deep into their pasts.

That being said, the main characters remain likeable and relatable.

Without feeling scattered, Christie Pits allows the reader to piece together the characters’ lives and pasts that led them to the Christie Pits riot.

Christie Pits offers characters you can empathize with and an engaging plot, both of which add to the true historical narrative rather than distracting from it.

Female superhero blasts box office records Captain Marvel well-received despite trolls’ efforts ZACHARY SIGURDSON, STAFF

T

he Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU)’s long-awaited Captain Marvel blasted onto screens raking in a whopping US$455 million worldwide on its opening weekend.

Globally, Captain Marvel had the sixth-highest grossing opening weekend in history and the second largest for Marvel, after Avengers: Infinity War. Domestic box office told a similar story. Captain Marvel now occupies the seventh largest opening weekend of all time and amongst its Marvel cadre is second only to Black Panther with $202 million.

Captain Marvel is a fun, engaging entry in the growing cosmicside of the MCU The film, which is also the MCU’s first female solo superhero movie, premiered on International Women’s Day following the MCU’s previous 20 male-led or ensemble cast films.

Set in the 1990s, Captain Marvel follows Carol Danvers, played

by Academy Award recipient Brie Larson, as she becomes one of the universe’s most powerful heroes.

While a galactic war between the militant Kree and the shape-shifting Skrulls reaches Earth, Danvers finds herself the centre of the conflict while

comments asking for greater representation of women and people of colour in film journalism, especially on films ostensibly made for underrepresented people. Though, obviously, internet trolls did not need any more reason to campaign against a female-led superhero film.

Captain Marvel is not a top-tier Marvel film and it does not need to be. It took Thor four movies to become the heavy-hitting character he has become in Thor: Ragnarok and Avengers: Infinity War. It takes time for characters and directors to truly come into their own.

Any issues in direction and pacing are minor flaws. Carol Danvers’s journey is just beginning.

ara Rae’s “gender odyssey” play “Dragonfly” premiered March 14 at the Rachel Browne Theatre.

Rae is a comedian, producer, writer and playwright. Originally

from Glasgow, Rae moved to Toronto in 1972 with her family. Since then, Rae has made a name for herself in Canadian comedy. She is one of the co-founders of the Winnipeg

Comedy Festival, which began in 2000.

Rae, a transgender woman, described “Dragonfly” as “an attempt to embody an inside voice of a trans child and a trans woman.”

“Dragonf ly” features Sarah Constible and Eric Blais in the roles of characters named “They” and “Them” respectively. They represent the internal sides of a trans woman throughout her life.

Rae said the roles are meant to be ambiguous and could be performed by anyone.

“It’s really the embodiment of an inside voice,” she said.

The two portray Rae’s inner world, from her childhood in Scotland to today. ”I knew I was transgender when I was maybe four years old, and I have had this inside my body and inside my head my whole life,” said Rae. Coming out as a trans woman was a gradual process for Rae, who began transitioning in July 2015. She said she

found some media portrayals of trans people to be restrictive.

“I am a little bit allergic to the paint-by-number narrative,” she said.

“The paint-by-number narrative is always used in trans people. If a news crew wants to show up and we haven’t had a discussion beforehand, they’re going to want to start with a shot of me putting on makeup and then they’re going to want to see a picture of me before I transitioned.

“I think the dominant society wants to tell trans stories a certain way.”

Rae wanted go beyond this generic, appearance-focused narrative with “Dragonfly.”

“I wanted to tell a trans story in a way that focused on the inside rather than the outside,” she said.

“Dragonfly” handles heavy subject matter including substance abuse, addiction, suicide and sexual violence, much of which Rae said was autobiographical.

“It’s parts of my life that are now

preserved in amber, which is not to say we don’t change the way we look at things,” she said.

“As much as I say this is about the inside part of it, it’s not like I don’t think that there’s a great deal of humour in the outside part of it.”

Rae said she feels grateful to be able to have the opportunity to showcase her story in a dramatic way with “Dragonfly” and in a comedic way with her stand-up comedy.

“It was tough not to put jokes up [in “Dragonfly”] — it’s hard when you’re a comic [...] not that you don’t want to be taken seriously, but that when you try to be taken seriously you will fail,” said Rae. “That is the anxiety of the comedian.”

“But yeah we battled hard […] we really wanted it but obviously they really wanted it too.

“I’m really proud of this team. It sucks losing but we’re still going to battle hard for fifth.”

With a 2-0 win over the University of Toronto Varsity Blues Sunday, the U of M Bisons women’s hockey team earned a fifth-place finish at the U Sports national women’s hockey championship.

In their final game wearing brown and gold, the senior class of Erica Rieder, Natasha Kostenko, Erin Kucheravy, Alanna Sharman, Karissa Kirkup, Lauryn Keen, Courtlyn Oswald and Alexandra Anderson played their hearts out. Keen and Kirkup each had a goal and an assist, while Sharman had an assist.

“They’re a dynasty,” Bisons interim head coach Sean Fisher said.

“That’s a special group. They accomplished so much in this program and we wanted to win the big one this year — obviously we probably had enough and just couldn’t quite get it done there on Thursday afternoon […] I’m just super happy for those fifth years.”

After getting its first win of the tournament Saturday, the Bisons came out firing in the opening frame Sunday.

Jordyn Zacharias had the best chance of the first, picking up a spin pass from Sharman and dangling her way into the slot. She broke free from coverage and went to the backhand, but Toronto goaltender Erica Fryer stretched out to rob Zacharias with the glove.

Sunday’s game was extra special for Zacharias who was able to play against her cousin Kiyono Cox. “We both obviously didn’t get the outcomes we wanted this weekend,” Zacharias said.

“But it was like ‘OK well let’s both make it to the consolation final,’ and then at least that way we can have fun with it and she’s in her last year so it was a good way to go out.”

“We had a deal that loser buys ice cream at the end of the game so I guess she owes me now,” she said.

After a scoreless first, it was Kirkup who struck first for Manitoba.

Sharman gained the zone, toedragged a defender and battled for space. She sent a pass across to a streaking Kirkup, and she made no mistake to make it 1-0 Bisons.

Kirkup was hurt in Manitoba’s tournament opening loss to the University of Guelph Gryphons and played a monster game for the herd Sunday. Playing with a separated shoulder, Kirkup posted two points and was involved all over the ice for

her last game.

“It feels pretty incredible yeah,” she said.

“Number one thing, I’m so happy my parents are here and get to watch my last games of my career. Last year, going through different injuries — and even this weekend — I’m just very happy to have a second chance and take full advantage of that.”

With the seniors already heavily involved in the game, Kirkup got fifth-year forward Keen on the board.

tral zone and poked the puck up to Kirkup who gained the Toronto zone and put a shot on goal. Fryer made the stop but kicked the puck right to Keen and she buried it for the 2-0 Bisons lead.

From there, the game opened up further, going end to end with both clubs getting solid chances.

Keepers Fryer and Lauren Taraschuk, though, held down their respective forts to give each side a chance to win.

Then in the final moments, with the net empty, Toronto nearly caught a break.

Taraschuk made a save and covered the puck but found herself piled on by three Varsity Blues players.

Manitoba players descended on the net, filling the crease to help their netminder.

In the scrum, Bisons defender Lauren Warkentin earned herself a double minor with 1:16 left to play.

Toronto threw everything but the kitchen sink at Taraschuk, but the second-year netminder held firm to earn the shutout win.

With the win, the Bisons clinched a fifth-place finish at nationals and bring a long season to a close.

A year removed from winning a national championship, the club got back to the dance but fell short.

From there the herd battled hard and will look to hit reset before challenging again in the 2019-20 season.

or the first time in program history, the University of Guelph Gryphons are national women’s hockey champions.

In a back-and-forth affair Sunday, fifth-year Valerie Lamenta pitched a 1-0 shutout win over the McGill University Martlets to win the national title.

“Best feeling in the whole wide world, it’s what I’ve been waiting for my whole five years,” Lamenta told U Sports post-game.

“I don’t have words right now, I’m sorry.”

After a quiet and slow first period, things opened up in the second.

Guelph and McGill battled back and forth trading chances but neither team seemed ready to take over the game.

This was until Christiana Colizza gave McGill some energy. She picked up a loose puck, circled low down around the net, burst out in front and rifled a shot on goal. Lamenta got her shoulder on it to keep it out and Guelph came right back down the ice with a chance of its own.

Miranda Lantz streaked through the slot toward the right faceoff dot and picked up the puck.

McGill defenders scrambled to reach her and her shot went just wide of the goal.

Then, after McGill had another chance a scrum ensued. In the fracas, Jade Downie-Landry of the Martlets was cross-checked across the face by a Guelph player in the crease and no call was made.

The decision by the officials proved fruitful for Guelph, as the club came right back down the ice on the next sequence to score.

Claire Merrick gained the zone, pulled a nice move to gain inside position and tore through the slot toward the left corner. On her way through she dropped a pass to Kaitlin Lowy, who ripped a shot low-blocker on Tricia Deguire for the 1-0 Gryphons lead heading into the second intermission.

From there, Lamenta kept the Marlets in check, making save after save to keep her club ahead.

Then in the final minute of the game, with the national title on the line, Kellyane Lecours tried to will her team even.

lthough it is not the finals they wanted, the U of M Bisons women’s hockey team is headed to the consolation finals of the 2019 U Sports national women’s hockey championship after a 3-1 win over the University of Prince Edward Island Panthers.

Barrels of fun with Fargey Bisons backup talks Alberta upbringing and poetry JASON PCHAJEK, STAFF

T

ypically, when you ask an athlete what other sports they played growing up, you expect to hear about volleyball, basketball or even track — but not barrel racing.

“I used to do it when I was younger, before I moved to Edmonton,” U of M Bisons women’s hockey goaltender Erin Fargey said.

“I moved to Edmonton when I was

like 16, but I used to compete all the way up until then. I had to pick one sport and hockey was the one.”

Barrel racing is a rodeo sport where each competitor rides in a set pattern around three barrels while trying to post the best time.

Born in Langdon, Alta. — a hamlet of roughly 5,000 people — the fields and trails of her hometown

were where Fargey began her life as a rodeo racer. After seeing barrel racing during a local rodeo she was hooked, and then her dad had an idea.

“He’s like ‘OK’ and takes me over to his buddy’s house and ‘Oh, so my girl wants to learn how to barrel race,’” she said.

“And [his friend] is like ‘Oh good my girls barrel race all the time.’ So I learned from these girls down the street.”

It may surprise some to think choosing hockey was based partially on how far the sport could take her, but Fargey said barrel racing is quite the lucrative venture.

“Friends from back home honestly went to Texas to barrel race — I’m dead serious,” she said.

“I was pretty good for [a] small town but I wouldn’t say I would’ve been able to do as well in pro,” she said.

“So [there are] different levels — but my horse was really short — so typically you need to have a horse with really really long legs. The only reason mine was OK is she was really

“It’s been awesome,” she said.

“The class sizes are super small so you’re really close with your [professors]. And our coaching staff is amazing and I love my teammates so couldn’t ask for anything better.”

Although the transition was

not easy — having to ramp up to a quicker and more competitive university game, along with being a fulltime student — Vandale said she now feels right at home in Charlottetown and likened the atmosphere to her hometown.

“I feel like I know everyone here,” she said.

“You go to Superstore and everyone just says hi to you and you have no idea who they are. But it’s kind of like Winnipeg, you just say hi to everyone, even though you don’t know them.”

P.E.I. Panthers battle Carabins in national opener

T

he underdog hosts for the 2019 U Sports women’s hockey national championships — the University of Prince Edward Island Panthers — showed they would not go quietly in a 3-0 loss to the University of Montreal Carabins.

Then in the third, Montreal put the game away with a goal from Alexandra Paradis P.E.I. was under siege early in the game as the Carabins fired at will in the first period. Montreal outshot the Panthers 12 to five in the opening frame — including a stretch where the Panthers went shotless — but P.E.I netminder Camille Scherger held the fort.

The dam finally burst in the second with a Montreal goal from Alexandra Labelle.

Jessica Cormier gained the zone

for the Carabins, sending the puck toward a streaking Labelle. She got wood on it, snapping a shot by Scherger for the 1-0 Carabins lead.

Kaleigh Quennec scored an easy tap-in goal for Montreal late in the

second frame and the Carabins entered the second intermission up 2-0.

Then in the third, Montreal put the game away with a goal from Alexandra Paradis.

Annie Germain carried the puck behind the Panthers goal, curled out of the corner and found Paradis at the point.

She hammered the puck from the point, over the shoulder of Scherger.

From there, Montreal cruised to a 3-0 win.

You would not know this result from listening to the crowd. The Panthers faithful were out in full force, in a game sold out weeks prior to puckdrop, cheering on their club through thick and thin.

The first shot recorded by P.E.I. — taken when Montreal already had sent 10 Scherger’s way — drew a massive uproar from the crowd, sounding like a goal more than a simple shot on net.

With the win, Montreal booked a date with the University of Guelph Gryphons in round two, while the Panthers met the U of M in the consolation round.
