Second Indigenous admin steps down

of M administrator Barry Lavallee made headlines last fall when he suggested U of M president David Barnard step down from his position citing issues of racism on campus.

Lavallee, who taught at the university and was director of education for the Ongomiizwin Indigenous institute of health and healing, will resign effective Feb. 18, after expressing concerns of a lack of response from university administration on issues of anti-Indigenous racism.

“The University of Manitoba struggles to address Indigenous-specific racism at its institute,” he said.

“That is a fair statement.”

Administration, faculty responds

U of M spokesperson John Danakas issued a statement saying the university is “committed to reconciliation and Indigenous priorities, as is laid out in its strategic plan,” and that “the University of Manitoba deeply appreciates Dr. Barry Lavallee’s efforts in support of Indigenous students and Indigenous health.”

In September, Lavallee called for Barnard’s removal in a public lecture, suggesting he be replaced with an Indigenous woman.

Lavallee said he never received any response from the senior administration on the suggestion.

“The Fort Garry administration has never conveyed a message or response about anything to me, not that I’m aware of,” he said.

While Lavallee was critical of the response to issues of systemic racism from senior Fort Garry administration, he commended the work of administration at the Rady faculty of health sciences where he works, including Marcia Anderson, the executive director of Indigenous academic affairs in the Ongomiizwin Indigenous institute of health and healing.

“We have a whole slew of people, you know, trying to work to address

Indigenous-specific racism,” he said.

Two months, two resignations

This is the second Indigenous administrator to resign from the U of M citing issues of racism in two months.

In December, the U of M’s first vice-provost of Indigenous engagement, Lynn Lavallée, resigned after just over a year in the position, saying her “vision for this role was not in alignment with administration.”

While he was not present at the second meeting, he said, based on what he has heard from those present, it “went well” and that the increasing dialogue between administration and students at the university is “encouraging.”

“It doesn’t mean that the learners that we have at the university are in the same boat. They’re not,” he said.

“They’re much more creative and courageous than many faculty as well as senior administration in dealing with what’s quite obvious.”

Lavallee said the students he has worked with at the U of M have been a source of hope for him, even as he leaves the university.

“I think at the overall end, I have more hope with learners and junior faculty in general than I do with senior administration, let me put it that way,” he said.

He said he did not “want the messaging, really, to go to the students that it is hopeless.”

“I want the students to know that they are the hope, and it’s their courage that’s actually hopeful for me in changing the university.”

ore than two dozen members of the University of Manitoba Faculty Association (UMFA) lined up outside the U of M senate chambers Feb. 6 to protest what the association president called a “closed, secretive” process to find the next president of the university.

University president David Barnard will be leaving the position in June 2020 and the selection process to find his replacement began last week.

A search committee — which includes UMSU president Jakob Sanderson, UMGSA president Carl Neumann and an UMFA member — has been formed to decide on a candidate. The committee will present a recommendation to the board of governors, which will make the final decision.

According to a statement released

The motion suggested the shortlisted candidates be made available to the senate in a closed session, that each make a short presentation explaining their goals for the university and that senators be permitted to make submitted assessments of the candidates to the search committee.

The motion passed, though not unanimously.

UMSU president Jakob Sanderson voted in favour of the motion.

“While I understand the advantages of a confidential search, I think it’s important that students and faculty can have their say in this critical process,” Sanderson said.

“And this is a strong middle ground proposal.”

Gabbert called the motion a “significant compromise.”

“I think it’s unfortunate that the board never actually consulted us in advance of deciding what the search procedures would be,” he said.

“Because if it at least had some input there, the outcome might have been the same, but I think there should have been some deference to senate’s advice in this matter. And that didn’t happen.”

Education for all campaign stops at U of M Canadian Federation of Students campaign seeks to break down post-secondary barriers MALAK ABAS, STAFF

mong defederation concerns and a meeting from a competing student association just hours away, the Canadian Federation of Students convened on campus Thursday to spread the word about its “Education for All” campaign.

Speakers included campaign coordinator Jonathan Northam and the federation’s Manitoba organizer, Elizabeth Shearer.

Northam said the campaign works to organize students to protest inaccessible, expensive post-secondary education and tuition hikes.

“Which we’re already starting to see the effects of, with people just dropping out partway through a degree, or just deciding not to go at all,” he said.

“So part of the attention of this campaign is to try and think of ways of getting that message out to students, politicizing that message for students and kind of letting people know that this should not be taken as normal.”

In November 2017, the provincial Progressive Conservative government lifted the cap in tuition fees that had been in place since 2012 for Manitoba universities, a move which that triggered protests by post-secondary students across the province.

Shearer called the Conservative’s decision “angering.”

“There was so much pushback by students and the government was not listening,” she said.

“And so they passed it anyway. So this is the government of today, this is the government in Manitoba. As

a result of their decisions, students are bearing higher and higher costs, so if there weren’t enough barriers to accessing education, now they’re just increasing them.”

“At this point, we’re really wanting to spread more of the word that tuition is increasing" — Elizabeth Shearer, federation organizer Shearer said the “Education for All” campaign is a supportive response to that pushback from students.

There was also discussion at the meeting of Ontario premier Doug Ford’s recent post-secondary education reforms, which will allow students to opt out of any ancillary student fees they find non-essential, including student union fees, a move Shearer compared to our own provincial government’s choices.

Brown said CASA has no political affiliations, and rather than attempt to influence students’ politics, it simply encourages students to take part in the process.

“We want to get as many students out voting as possible. CASA is a non-partisan organization, we believe that’s one of our biggest assets when it comes to our advocacy,” he said.

“We don’t endorse parties, we don’t endorse candidates, and that’s how we stay friends with everyone. And in doing so that allows us to approach these campaigns by saying, ‘We don’t care who students vote for, we just want them to vote.’”

According to Brown, CASA works to get the voices of young people heard in the highest level of government.

“The millennial vote is going to be the biggest voting block in the next

federal election, and we want to make sure our voices are at the table and that they’re being listened to,” he said.

The CASA representatives also took questions from the board and students at large in attendance — including some who expressed concerns that should UMSU join CASA, the union would lose the advocacy work the Canadian Federation of Students provides, including campaigns advocating for direct government funding of tuition for post-secondary students and supports for international students.

Qudus Abusaleh, a student who recently worked for the Manitoban, said he believes CASA will not be able to provide what the Canadian Federation of Students does to international U of M students.

“There won’t be international healthcare coverage for students, tuition fees are still going up, and CASA, there’s only so much they can do,” he said.

Brown said CASA is working on providing international student sup-

port at a federal level.

Former UMSU LGBTTQ* representative Eun-Bi Kang asked the presenters whether CASA had any specific support groups or initiatives for LGBTTQ* post-secondary students. Brown said CASA is working on developing a standard “framework” on campus sexual violence policies.

“One of the big things that we pushed this year in our advocacy week was around sexual violence,” he said.

“I think that’s sort of the most relevant policy that we’ve been pushing on that sort of thing — we’ve seen the statistics where LGBTTQ* people are more likely to be victims of sexual violence, and those kinds of things.

So we took those stats to Parliament Hill.”

The presentation ended with a list of other projects the association is currently working on.

“We are preparing for the next federal election,” he said.

“We hope to get tens of thousands more students to be pledging.”

Mature students’ rep moves to expand portfolio

art-time students may finally be represented in UMSU chambers if a motion introduced Thursday is passed.

The motion, introduced by mature students’ representative Sharlene MacCoy, proposes expanding her portfolio to include part-time students. It will be voted on at the next Feb. 28 board meeting.

MacCoy is the first person to take on the mature students’ representative position, which she had a primary role in establishing last year.

She said she should have included part-time students in the role’s responsibilities earlier.

“It was an oversight,” she said. “I brought the actual position to UMSU last year, I guess, and it was an oversight on my part. I just said mature students.”

There is currently no UMSU board member tasked with representing part-time students. The UMSU board was open to the idea immedi-

rchitecture students braved the cold when the faculty held its 11th iteration of the annual Atmosphere Symposium from Feb. 7 to 9.

The theme of this year’s symposium was “adaptation” and featured speakers and presentations from professionals, faculty and students both within and outside the design disciplines.

The opening keynote speech was delivered by landscape historian and critic Marc Treib, and other featured keynotes included celebrated landscape architect Georges Descombes and U of W associate professor of geography and filmmaker Ian Mauro.

Each year includes the construction of an ice bar in the courtyard of the John A. Russell Building, where symposium attend-

This year’s bar was built entirely from snow carried into the courtyard from outside the building, to preserve the sculptural quality of the drifts.

Each of the four departments within the faculty of architecture take turns hosting Atmosphere, with this year’s edition having

been organized by professors Marcella Eaton and Alyssa Schwann of the department of landscape architecture.

The symposium is in part funded by the faculty of architecture endowment fund, which also supports the faculty’s annual Warehouse Journal showcasing student work.

Next year’s Atmosphere will be put on by the department of city planning.

While this does not exonerate either side, it does shine a light on a long festering rot in the hockey community. Everyone crosses the line regularly and nobody stands up to stop it.

Players, coaches and officials are the ones deciding what is appropriate on the ice.

They are the ones influencing one another on what is OK to say or do, and what is not. If Southam or any other player does not have their actions checked, or beliefs challenged, they will carry them on to everyday life.

Nothing will change, and the world will get a little less tolerant.

Left unchecked, such behaviour is reinforced, accepted and normalized within hockey culture.

This is a problem indicative of hockey’s ultimately shallow nature.

For sport-championing movements such as You Can Play — supporting LGBTTQ* inclusion in sport — and Bell Let’s Talk, when actual harms are done the response is wagging fingers and stern talking-tos.

This is not to say those causes are not worthy and the athletes, executives and fans supporting them are not genuine, but all talk of inclusion and respect seemingly gets thrown away once the puck is dropped.

then-Montreal Canadiens defender P.K. Subban scored an overtime game winner against a hated rival in the Boston Bruins.

The response by Bruins fans was to throw racial slurs Subban’s way on Twitter, eventually leading to the N-word trending in the Boston area.

Yes, trash talking is part of the sport and the men and women playing hockey are hardy people who can take a lot of punishment, but this does not excuse attacks breaching the barrier of the game.

You can fight someone on the ice, but not in the hallway, and that violence cannot be brought beyond the boards.

So why then can a player’s personal life be brought within them?

Instead of insulting a player for their mental health issues, their sexuality, their race or the people they care about, you can target what they do on the ice.

You could make fun of their stone hands or how they are a pylon on defence.

Heck, even go full Claude Giroux and make pigeon noises at someone or pull a Drew Doughty and simply tell them “Buddy, you suck at hockey.”

If people are scared to be open about their struggles, mental health, sexuality or victimization because of what people will say, then all the talk of tolerance and leadership in the hockey community is nothing but hot air.

Canada must restore its estate tax and join the rest of the G7 nations in doing so. In plain terms, a progressive estate tax between 70 and 90 per cent on assets above $10 million is not just the moral solution to combat the rise of dynasties, but necessary.

This is not a proposal that will affect the average Canadian, considering the average inheritance in Canada is $100,000.

A $10 million tax-free inheritance is more than enough for any son or daughter of a millionaire or billionaire to live like royalty for their entire life.

The ramifications of a progressive proposal like this could be significant.

In 2014, the United States collected $19.3 billion in estate tax, even at a modest rate of 40 per cent over $5.5 million per individual or $11 million for couples.

Capturing some of this wealth and putting it into social programs not only helps to elevate those on the bottom rung of society but shrinks the thrones of those on the top.

Until the day that Canadian lawmakers stand up to the wealthiest Canadians, Canada will continue to be not a beacon of opportunity, but a land of untouchable dynasties.

eg City Climate Jam: Resilience on the Red, held on Feb. 8 at the University of Winnipeg, was a public forum in response to the urgency of climate change with the intent of fostering locally-driven solutions toward climate resilience.

The day was full of information workshops, local speakers and opportunities to exchange ideas.

The forum was organized by a coalition of environmentally-oriented organizations known as Manitoba’s Climate Action Team including the Canadian Centre of Policy Alternatives, Manitoba Energy Justice Coalition, Climate Change Connection, Green Action Centre, Prairie Climate Centre and the U of W’s Sustainability Office.

The event was attended by a diverse group of community members.

L

ocal multi-disciplinary artist and art facilitator Toby Gillies’s Seasons of Togetherness solo art exhibition is running until Feb. 15 at Aceartinc.

The exhibition grew out of Gillies’s fascination with different sources of relationship advice, from old thrift store relationship guidebooks to online articles instructing people how they should express their intimate feelings.

It is not uncommon for visual artists to cite the works of legendary innovators in their field or sudden rushes of creativity for their pieces.

But for Gillies, inspiration is deeply rooted in his community.

“I’m mostly inspired by my friends that I draw with, or my work at Art

ocal singer-songwriters Bailee Woods and Jory Strachan, known by their stage names Housepanther and Wrecker, respectively, will be releasing their collaborative EP Homewrecker this Valentine’s Day at Forth.

Housepanther’s debut indie-pop album Club Soda Lows ranked number four among the “Best Albums of 2018” as listed by the Cups N Cakes Network, a music production collective based in Western Canada.

Wrecker was involved in several Winnipeg punk bands, in addition to having his own band 1971.

The two combined their styles for Homewrecker, a five-track EP tied together by the theme of infidelity.

anada's Royal Winnipeg Ballet (RWB) is bringing “Romeo and Juliet” back to Winnipeg in time for Valentine’s Day. A perennia l love stor y, Shakespeare’s “Romeo and Juliet” has been performed time and time again with many adapted compositions in film and theatre.

The ballet production of this time-

less romance offers the audience a lush interpretation of the yearning, sorrow and passionate courtship that exists between the two star-crossed lovers.

Principa l dancer Dmitri Dovgoselets plays Romeo, while Juliet is brought to life by second soloist Elizabeth Lamont.

Lamont played the role of Juliet

for the first time in RWB’s 2014 production of “Romeo and Juliet.” She has been with the RWB for nine seasons.

“I think a lot of ballet can be a little intimidating to the average person, just because if you don’t know the history of ballet, I feel like a lot of people leave thinking it was really beautiful, but they don’t know what

Lewis performed as part of the debut performance of Romeo and Juliet in 1981. As a young dancer, Lewis was chosen for the roles of both Mercutio and Romeo by the late choreographer Rudi van Dantzig of the Dutch National Ballet.

Having worked closely with the choreographer, Lewis has been able to convey van Dantzig’s intentions behind the movements and actions sought from the performance.

The story’s familiarity, coupled with its exciting action sequences, makes “Romeo and Juliet” an appealing ballet for newer audience

members.

“It’s very easy to understand the story when you’re watching.

Hopefully I make some people cry,” she said jokingly.

Lamont also hopes “Romeo and Juliet” will make ballet seem more accessible to a broader audience.

“The pas de deux between Romeo and Juliet and the balconies, it sweeps you off your feet as an audience member and you remember those feelings of first falling in love just by watching the dancing,” she said.

The accompanying music helps narrate the story as well.

“The reason I dance is because of the music,” said Lamont.

Sergei Prokofiev’s stunning score, performed by the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra, helps convey the juxtaposed dramatic emotions between the Montagues and Capulets and the affair between Juliet and Romeo.

Broadway stars Craig Ramsay and Catherine Wreford play the roles of Lord and Lady Capulet. Young dancers from the RWB School have also been cast in this production.

innipeg’s GMB Chomichuk is an award-winning writer, illustrator and graphic novelist with a unique and imaginative art style.

Some of his works include Infinitum, a time-travel noir story, and the Midnight City series, where pulpera superheroes battle Lovecraftian monsters. He also illustrated Will I See?, a graphic novel exploring Winnipeg’s missing and murdered Indigenous women.

Chomichuk had a passion for creative storytelling from an early age.

“I always drew and I always wrote, right from Grade 1,” said Chomichuk.

“I think some people end up institutionalized out of that [creative] behaviour and I managed to hold onto it into adulthood.”

Chomichuk spent a decade as a teacher while publishing one to two books per year.

He transitioned to a full-time artist after developing connections in the industry and some personal exploration.

“We had a tough spot in the family, went to a lot of funerals,” he said.

Trampoline issues apocalypse-themed rock musical

ocal alternative rock band Trampoline released their first full-length album, Happy Crimes, on Feb. 9.

The band is comprised of Michelle Lecnik on guitar and lead vocals, Steve Martens on drums and Joey Penner on bass. While the band has been around since 2014, Happy Crimes is vastly different from their previous work.

Happy Crimes is a concept album described by Martens as “a rock musical which explores the imaginings and feelings of a man anticipating the apocalypse.”

The male protagonist has ambiguous political affiliations, deals with his past traumas, questions his religious beliefs and struggles with the pressures of the modern world. He discovers that despite his powerlessness, he is able to create change within himself.

Lecnik’s life served as inspiration for the protagonist of the album.

assie Bujan was in Grade 5 when she fell in love for the first time.

It was the first time she tried volleyball and her love of the sport has carried her all the way through a fiveyear career with the U of M Bisons.

The 22-year-old’s first sport was soccer, but while in elementary school she was first exposed to volleyball. In Grade 8, she dropped soccer to pursue volleyball more seriously.

“Soccer was so repetitive,” said Bujan. “Once I found volleyball, it was so different, and I found the want to go to practice, which is a huge thing.”

When Bujan arrived at the U of M she began to play at left side, but found herself moved to libero soon after — the position she still plays to this day.

“I was always the shortest, I was always good at defence and passing — that’s pretty much how I found my position on the court as a left side,” said Bujan.

“I got surpassed as a left side and so our coach wanted me still on the court because of my back-row skills.”

Bujan enjoyed playing left side, but

Bison Briefs Men’s basketball blown out

Less than a week after splitting a series against the University of Winnipeg Wesmen, the U of M Bisons men’s basketball team was bounced from the post-season

by Winnipeg Thursday, 92-77.

Manitoba fell far behind right off the bat, outscored 33-14 in the first quarter. The club rallied to 49-35 deficit at halftime, but by then it was too late and Winnipeg kept its cross-town rival at arm’s length the rest of the way.

Rashawn Browne led the herd with 23 points. Narcisse Ambanza dropped 36 for the Wesmen.

Women’s basketball rammed by Pronghorns

More basketball playoff hopes were dashed Friday as the Bisons women’s basketball team lost 99-60 to the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns in the Canada West playoffs play-in game.

A dominant 30-10 first quarter got the Pronghorns well ahead of the herd and a 29-13 third quarter all but finished it.

Four of Lethbridge’s five starters hit double digits in the game, while three bench players did the same. Nicole Konieczny led Manitoba with 17 points, Taylor Randall and Addison Martin both had 15.

Regina called a timeout to calm its players down and it worked, as Matheson slammed down a gamewinning kill on the next rally, taking the set 25-21 and the match.

Manitoba will travel to Trinity Western University next week to face the Spartans. Game one is 8 p.m. CST on Feb. 15 and game two is the next day at 7 p.m. CST

Women’s hockey ends regular season with split

The Bisons women’s hockey team was on both ends of a 2-1 score this weekend against the University of Saskatchewan Huskies.

In game one, the herd came away with the win. Jordyn Zacharias got the game going in the first, but the Huskies tied it seven minutes later. Alexandra Anderson scored the winner just 34 seconds into the third period.

Saskatchewan came out on top Saturday 2-1 thanks to strong defensive play. Morgan Willoughby made it 2-0 Huskies in the second before Zacharias scored the lone Bisons goal.

The Huskies locked down defensively the rest of the way to take the win.

Manitoba has a bye to the second round of the Canada West playoffs, and will await the higher-seeded winner of the quarter-finals.
