he affordability and accessibility of education in Manitoba were the topics of discussion at the Manitoba chapter of the Canadian Federation of Students’ f irst Education for All committee meeting of the year Friday.

Dele Ojewole, the federation’s Manitoba chairperson, said there is no more crucial time for student organizations to heighten advocacy efforts than now.

“Right now, the student movement should not be silent in the face of cuts being made by this government,” he said.

“We need to continue to speak up, to make sure that our voices are being heard in the province.”

Northam said while the situation seems bleak for Ontario students, the fact that students across Canada have risen up to protest the changes speaks to a changing attitude among Canadian students.

“There is potential for us to fight back against that, and to send a message across Canada, that other PC governments — you can’t do this,” he said.

“That nationally, there will be a response.”

Pro-life student group resurrects campaign in UC Group subject to complaints after usage of graphic imagery, fetus dolls MALAK ABAS, STAFF

fter having its tabling materials confiscated in the fall, U of M pro-life student group Students for a Culture of Life (UMSCL) faced renewed criticism after reappearing at UMSU University Centre with new campaigning materials during student group recruitment week.

According to its official UMSU student group page, the group “exists to educate university students about prenatal development, abortion and what abortion does to preborn children, and other human rights issues, such as euthanasia.”

UMSCL has faced pushback from

students for past campaigning efforts, which included materials that caused some students to file complaints with UMSU. In the fall term, UMSCL’s tabling materials were confiscated by UMSU following complaints.

UMSU president Jakob Sanderson said the decision was made with the direction that the group would have to follow the new policies.

“In September their tabling rights were suspended,” he said.

“They were re-instated after the new policy was passed with the expectation that they would comply.”

However, UMSU was notified by students that some of the materials used by UMSCL — which included graphic imagery in pamphlets and miniature fetus dolls — were directly

in violation with the new amendments, which also include a subclause opposing “the dissemination of graphic materials or information that is misleading or false as part of any event/activity or within the group/ club or association.”

“I wasn’t in the office when they were first seen but they were told to put them away,” Sanderson said.

“By the time I got there, the basket of miniature fetuses was stolen. I have no idea who stole it.”

UMSCL president Gaudius Mariae Lucas said UMSU asked the group to remove the fetus dolls, but said the brochures and literature the group was handing out were acceptable.

“I wasn’t too sure why the fetal models were [considered] too graphic,” he said.

“And I was asking why similar graphics within the brochure were okay, because they were saying just specifically the fetal molds were, and I wasn’t too sure.”

Sanderson added that UMSU is dealing with UMSCL “internally at this time” and that the group left of their own accord and UMSU did not formally revoke their tabling privileges.

“We did not stop their tabling but said that the fetuses were inappropriate and to consider this a formal warning. An email was later sent out to clarify this,” he said.

“If there are further incidents, further action may be considered.”

ccording to a recently-released report by the Canadian Federation of Students, while Canada remains home to one of the world’s most educated populations, the pursuit of greater knowledge continues to leave marginalized groups behind.

The federation’s Education Justice 2018 report, released Jan. 15, looks at the accessibility of education for several communities and seeks to address the impact of poverty and marginalization on these communities’ ability to afford post-secondary education.

“As the evidence mounts, the bottom line becomes clearer and clearer: as tuition fees have skyrocketed, those in already marginalized positions are the most disadvantaged,” the report reads.

Provincial film credit made permanent U of M film graduate encourages potential producers to start now TY BRASS, STAFF

T

he sun has set on the Manitoba government’s film and video production tax credit’s “sunset clause,” making the credit a permanent commitment.

The tax credit was set to expire on Dec. 31 of this year, but an industry working group determined the credit was needed to meet the needs of the growing film industry in the province.

The credit allows film and video projects within Manitoba to receive either 45 per cent of labour costs or 30 per cent of total production costs back.

Recent graduate of the U of M film program Sheldon Williamson said he is excited about the tax credit’s effect on the province’s film industry.

“I’d say for most people who have worked in the industry who have been here for a while, this is basically the golden age of the film industry in Winnipeg,” he said.

“There are tons of different options for students to get in.”

Since graduating, Williamson works on film and video projects in Manitoba as a part of the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees (IATSE) — a labour union that includes over

100,000 members — in the sound department.

Williamson said the tax credit keeps Winnipeg competitive when producers are looking for locations to shoot, and rivals the credit offered by bigger cities.

“From what I’ve heard from one of the cinematographers from L.A. who I was working with one time, our tax credit actually rivals California’s to a certain extent,” he said.

“The tax credit, I’d say, I think it affects bigger projects more. That’s why they want to come here, because our tax credit is so good,” Williamson added.

The credit is not the only aspect of Manitoba drawing producers,

according to Williamson, who says the province is well-positioned to be a popular film production location due to the range of environments it provides.

“Our province looks a lot like a lot of rural areas that [...] for shooting for certain movies, especially horror, so I could see a lot more [producers] coming here,” he said.

“Especially now that it’s permanent.

This promotes more productions to come here because they see that it’s not going to go away, it’s a lot safer to come and film here.”

Williamson encouraged anyone in the province who is interested in film to take advantage of the credit opportunities and to start now.

“I’d say this is the best time to get in if you want to get into the production side — all of the unions are

looking for more people to join, and to grow each day,” he said.

“We actually had our first career day booth just this past weekend at the U of M, just because we’re so big now that we can actually reach out to the university and really talk to students. I’d say this is the best time for students to get in.”

U

of M professor Erwin Huebner gave a lecture Thursday after writing a book — and placing it alongside others in a quail’s egg.

Huebner is artist-in-residence at the U of M school of art and is a recently-retired biology professor.

Huebner gave a talk Jan. 17 at the opening ceremony of his art exhibition, Outside the Boundaries: Exploring the Natural World Through Artist Books, which will be presented at the Archives and Special Collections area of the library until April 15.

“I like to incorporate something about the nature of [the book]” — Erwin Huebner, school of art artist-in-residence Huebner’s interest in artistic book work started about 15 years ago and has led him to grow a hand-made collection.

“Artist books are books that can be sculptural,” said Huebner.

“They can be more conventional binding, and they may tell a story, or they may be simply a collection of photographs.”

Huebner said that despite his

interest in the arts, it was the sciences he eventually chose to study in his post-secondary journey.

“When I went to university I was also interested in science,” he said.

“So, I decided to do a degree in science and that led to graduate school, but my science has always involved microscopy and cell biology and often the visual side of science. And, along with the science, I always did art, whether it was photography or etchings.”

Exhibits on display include books showing the texture and properties of different animal skins and books made out of antique accordion book covers.

New dean appointed to Desautels faculty of music Former U of M student Edward Jurkowski returns home MALAK ABAS, STAFF

T

he Desautels faculty of music started the year on a high note by appointing a new dean.

Edward Jurkowski, whose position officially began Jan. 1, is no stranger to Winnipeg’s music scene.

“I’m from Winnipeg,” he said.

“I did my undergraduate degree at the faculty of music and went down to the States to do my graduate studies.”

While he had spent time outside of Winnipeg, he was always looking for an opportunity to return to the city — an opportunity which presented itself in the form of the dean position.

He had previously worked as the dean of the faculty of fine arts at the University of Lethbridge.

“Came back to Canada, and had been living in Lethbridge, Alberta, for the last 22 and a half years,” he said.

“Loved it a lot, but home is home, and when the opportunity came up, my wife and I thought ‘Good opportunity to think about moving back, reconnecting with family.’ And received the position, and excited to be here.”

Jurkowski said his time here so far is “going great,” and that the significant expansion of the faculty of music’s space — in 2017, the faculty opened a new 60,000 square foot facility attached to Taché Hall — was

an especially exciting aspect coming into the position.

“There’s so many more possibilities with just being a larger space where you can have room to breathe, but also the idea of it being connected so close with the [art buildings] and the theatre that’s right there,” he said.

He said his main goal as the new dean of the faculty of music was collaboration — inviting both students and faculty to interact with music students and to encourage mutual learning.

“The possibilities of interdisciplinary work both with students — particularly just getting them energized and excited, being together — and just learning from each other, learn-

ing what their particular curriculum is about,” he said.

“Learning what their experiences are as a student, as a music student, what that might mean for a visual arts student, what that might mean for a drama student, what kinds of creative things could be put together.”

Beyond that, Jurkowski said he hopes to expand this culture of collaboration to fellow university faculty, and the wider arts community in Winnipeg and beyond.

“I’m also very interested in what that might mean for faculty associations and what that might mean for the university and the Winnipeg community,” he said.

He said he hopes to encourage inter-faculty connections as well.

“It’s developing relationships with other deans and seeing what goes on, say, in the faculty of arts, or the faculty of science [...] And what activities are going on there.

“What kind of relationships might

Jurkowski said in the short time he has worked at the U of M as a dean, his experiences have been “nothing but positive,” and credits “the environment that’s been provided by the faculty” as his reasoning.

F

or the Undergraduates of Canadian Research-Intensive Universities (UCRU) to suggest that the federal tuition tax credit be eliminated is a step backwards. And even more troubling is UMSU’s decision to back the call to eliminate the tax credit without student consultation.

UMSU and UCRU are proposing additional means-based grants to replace the federal tuition tax credit.

After the removal of the federal education and textbook credits — as well as the Manitoba government abolishing the provincial tuition, education and textbook tax credit — eliminating a universally applicable tax credit in favour of providing more funding for a means-based grant program is not as helpful as one might think.

It seems UCRU’s suggestion does little to help all lowincome students, while also harming middle-class students for no discernible reason So, if a student during the entirety of their four-year degree earned no taxable income and then landed a job after graduation in which they began to earn taxable income, the total amount of the credit carried forward from when they initially began university kicks in.

UMCycle offers safe space for bike maintenance

MCycle’s f irst Mechanic Bootcamp for “women, transgender, two spirit and gender nonbinary folx” of 2019 will be held Jan. 23 and Jan. 30.

By the end of the bootcamp, participants will have acquired the mechanical skills necessary to repair their own bikes and volunteer for UMCycle.

Anna Weier, manager of UMCycle and U of M alumna, said UMCycle’s “main mission [is] to get more people riding bikes to, from and around the University of Manitoba campuses.”

he Black Hole Theatre Company (BHTC) is kicking off 2019 with their season’s second mainstage production, bringing Henrik Ibsen’s Peer Gynt to the John J. Conklin Theatre.

Composed of five acts, the play takes the audience from the mountainside in eastern Norway to North Africa and the Sahara.

Professor emeritus and cofounder of the BHTC, Chris Johnson is the director of Peer Gynt. He led an 18-member cast of both students and alumni for the 19th Royal Manitoba Theatre Company’s Master Playwright Festival.

Johnson said the BHTC’s crite-

Local MC Malcolm-Jay featured in Big Fun Festival

Political rapper explores racial identity through music ZACHARY SIGURDSON, STAFF

M

alcolm-Jay, local hip-hop artist and producer, will be performing Jan. 25 as part of Big Fun Festival.

Big Fun Festival is an annual winter music festival, showcasing an eclectic mix of Canadian artists. It will be held from Jan. 23 to 27 at various venues in downtown Winnipeg.

Born in Toronto but raised in Winnipeg, Malcolm-Jay has been active in the Canadian rap industry for over a decade. He began freestyle rapping in high school.

Eventually, he formed a group called the Happy Unfortunate in 2007. About eight years later, he went solo as Malcolm-Jay. He described Winnipeg as a great place for artists due to its long, cold winters.

“You’re inside for most of the year,” he said.

“And honestly, when you’re cooped up, you typically have indoor hobbies, I find, whether it’s painting or writing or making music.”

His father’s record collection was his biggest musical influence.

“It ranged from R&B and soul, from Aretha Franklin from the ’70s and ’60s to funk music — ’80s funk — to, like when rap came out, so at an early age I was listening to RunD.M.C. and Gang Starr,” he said.

“As I became an angsty teenager I got really into 2Pac. Good music is good music, regardless of genre.”

His first full-length solo album, The Enemy Within, came out in September 2017.

He decided to release it in time for his first Nuit Blanche performance, which only allowed him five months to produce his first album.

He described the production as a hard process, but one that allowed for therapeutic expression of a lot of identity tensions he was struggling with at the time.

“I’m multi-racial,” he said. “I’m half-Filipino, half-African American, Indigenous, I’m also part Scottish —

I hear so many different narratives about what people think about each other.”

A police altercation had a big influence on the album’s themes.

“Three years ago, I was driving home from work and apparently my car fit the description of a guy who

was a shooter. They sent a whole S.W.A.T. team in my house,” said Malcolm-Jay. It later came out that he was deemed suspicious because he was driving a “nice car.”

“Being profiled for the first time opened my eyes. I [realized I] should do research and learn more about my

heritage.”

The Enemy Within’s album cover depicts African and Filipino iconography, as well as Canada’s habit of putting Band-Aids on serious issues.

A huge believer in preparation, he will practice a song until it is muscle memory and he is completely sick of listening to it.

“At the same time I’m a fan of things being organic, and things being on the flow,” he said.

Malcolm-Jay is currently working on his next EP and a single.

“When my new music comes out it will be focused on how I’m presently feeling, not being caught up in the past,” he said.

“Which actually makes it harder to make.”

The Enemy Within can be found as a cassette, disk and digital album on Bandcamp. Malcolm-Jay will be performing alongside Snotty Nose Rez Kids and Studio 393 Presents: A Hyped Conquest on Jan. 25 at the Good Will Social Club.

L

ong time contributor to Winnipeg’s vibrant film community Ryan Steel is a young filmmaker, animator and film curator.

He is also one of the co-creators of the now-defunct pop-up movie theatre, the Laundry Room Theatre.

Steel was the co-curator for the Laundry Room’s last Secret Cinema event Jan. 11, in collaboration with Cinematheque.

The Laundry Room was cocreated by Steel and his colleague Matthew Schneider in 2018. Its prime directive was to screen local short films created by friends of the pair, with each showing punctuated by a secret feature film.

Like many independent film projects, the Laundry Room was borne out of the necessity for a filmmaker’s work to be seen.

Steel operated under the Laundry Room’s name for Secret Cinema on Jan. 11, but the Laundry Room Theatre has been laid to rest.

Nevertheless, he remained hopeful for the future of similar projects.

“I think the spirit of collaboration and showing the work of young filmmakers in Manitoba will never die,” Steel said.

“The future is open, the possibilities are open, there are still great films being made in Manitoba by young people that need to be seen.”

Bisons dominate frustrated Cougars Sharman and Oswald shine as herd claims first in conference

he chasm between the top teams in Canada West women’s hockey and those on the fringe was on full display between the U of M Bisons and the University of Regina Cougars. A pair of lopsided wins propelled the Bisons to first in the conference and put Regina in danger of falling from playoff contention.

With a goal and an assist, Alanna Sharman continued her torrid pace since returning from injury in a 3-1 win by the U of M Bisons over the University of Regina Cougars Friday.

The winger opened scoring for Manitoba with her third goal in five games after missing the first 16 of the season with a lower-body injury. She added an assist in the third to make it five points in five games.

“Sitting out you see a lot of things that you miss when you’re playing,” Sharman said.

“I definitely paid attention a lot when I was out to what works and what doesn’t. I think our line’s rolling pretty well and when you’re doing the small things right, points are going to come.”

On the opening goal, Sharman picked the puck up from the corner and curled out toward the Regina net. Goaltender Morgan Baker came out to challenge, but it made no difference as Sharman picked the corner for a 1-0 lead in the first period.

Megan Neduzak extended the lead a few minutes later. Her point

shot snuck under Baker’s glove to make it 2-0 Bisons in the first.

The two-goal lead stood until the third when Sheridan Oswald stretched it to three for Manitoba.

A Sharman shot was kicked into the slot, right onto the stick of Oswald and she shovelled it into the net.

Jaycee Magwood broke the goose egg for Regina moments later to make it 3-1 Manitoba. Her marker was the only goal to get past Lauren Taraschuk.

With a playoff spot locked down, Bisons interim head coach Sean Fisher said the team will not change much down the stretch.

“It’ll be business as usual,” Fisher said.

Manitoba’s 21 games in the 201819 season, while backups Erin Fargey and Devan Johnson have seen action in three and two games, respectively.

Men’s hockey keeps playoff hopes alive

The Bisons men’s hockey team took down fellow basement-dwelling team the University of Regina Cougars this weekend, closing the gap on the final playoff spot.

After a scoreless first in game one of the series, Regina got out ahead 1-0 in the second.

Matthew LeBlanc responded to tie the game for the herd and set up a wild final frame.

Devon Skoleski and Lukas Skrumeda opened the third with a pair of goals to give Manitoba a 3-1 lead. Regina scored to make it 3-2 but Liam Bilton and Nick Zajac put the game out of reach for a 5-2 win.

The good fortune did not extend into game two. After two Jonah Wasylak goals gave Manitoba a 3-1 lead midway through the second, Regina scored five unanswered to take a 6-3 win.

With the Manitoba win and two losses by the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns, the Bisons playoff dream is still alive. With six games remaining, the Bisons sit six points back of Lethbridge for the final playoff spot.

Manitoba and Lethbridge will meet next weekend in a potentially deciding series.

Fisher called his team’s composure with the physicality “terrific.”

“I just want to be careful what I say so I don’t get fired or fined,” he said.

Regina had 12 of 15 penalties in the game, including multiple body checking minors and a bench minor for unsportsmanlike conduct. The Bisons went 4 for 12 on the man advantage.

The U of M Bisons women’s hockey team only needed 20 minutes to bury the University of Regina Cougars and complete the weekend sweep. With four goals in the first period the Bisons cruised to a 7-3 win.

Oswald continued a wicked weekend, potting two of those four first period goals. Her three goals on the weekend brought the MacGregor-born forward’s season total to eight through 20 games.

The University of Manitoba’s volleyball clubs walked out of Saskatchewan with mixed results following a weekend series with the University of Saskatchewan Huskies.

The women’s club looked like two different teams on back-toback nights after dominating the Huskies 3-0 Friday before being blanked 3-0 in Saturday’s follow-up.

With three weeks left in the schedule, the Bisons currently sit sixth in the conference at 9-9.

The men’s squad fell 3-0 Friday to open the weekend before rebounding with a 3-2 win Saturday.

With the win, the 7-9 Bisons stay a game ahead of the 6-10 UBC Thunderbirds for eighth in the conference.

The Bisons men’s volleyball team also split the Saskatchewan Huskies over the weekend.

Former Bison narrowly misses Superbowl

New Orleans Saints defensive tackle and one-time Bison David Onyemata fell just shy of an appearance in Super Bowl LIII after the Saints fell 26-23 to the Los Angelas Rams in Sunday.

The Rams claimed the NFC championship in overtime following a controversial pass interference no-call late in regulation.

The Rams will now face the New England Patriots in the Super Bowl Feb. 3.

It has not always been good times for Harvey at the U of M — she tore her ACL in her third season. The injury was made worse by the fact Harvey felt she was playing some of her best basketball before getting hurt.

“I was doing just a regular crossover and I just fell,” said Harvey.

“I knew right away what it was because I had done it before. It was very devastating for me because I felt my hard work was finally paying off and then I got a setback with this injury and I had to go back to the drawing board basically.”

Harvey previously tore her left ACL when playing junior varsity.

The severity of the injury also forced Harvey to consider the longterm implications, and even put her future with the Bisons in doubt.

“I want to be able to walk when I’m 45 and not have so many knee problems,” said Harvey.

She weighed the pros and cons and decided to finish off her Bisons career.

“Since I had seen how good I can play, I kind of wanted to finish what I started and I didn’t want to give up and that’s not really in my nature anyways,” said Harvey.

She added that the moment she stepped back onto the court, the recovery, the pain and the wait were all worth it.

“The first time I stepped back on the floor at [Investors Group Athletic Centre] after my injury was a pretty special moment.”

Harvey is graduating with an undergraduate degree in environmental science this spring and hopes to make a difference in her career.

“I want to be doing some conservation research,” said Harvey.

“Definitely try to make this world a better place than when I came into it. So hopefully I can get something related to that, I think I’ll be happy.”

Although Harvey plans to be off the court for a while, she will not close the door on a return.

“I would love to just take some time to do normal people things and not spend 24 hours a day in the gym,” said Harvey.

“It’s definitely a door that I’m not going to close. I’m keeping my options open, let’s just say that.”

“This was a team that was in final four last year,” said Harvey.

“I think we can’t be too disappointed with how we played, because I think we did a pretty good job considering how consistent they are.”

The first quarter was a defensive battle as the two teams tested each other en route to a 15-15 score.

Ratzlaff led the visitors with six points, while Emma Thompson paced the herd with five points.

The teams exchanged looks in the second quarter until Spartans guard Kianna Wiens put together a 10-0 run on her own to put her team up 37-29. Wiens was a monster with a quarter-high 10 points.

Martin ended the run with a freethrow, but the Spartans led 37-30 at the halftime break.

Ratzlaff had a big third quarter for the visitors and scored 13 points for her team. Manitoba kept the game close, but the Spartans ended the frame with an 8-0 scoring run to put them up by 54-40 entering the final quarter of play.

Manitoba was unable to get any momentum in the fourth quarter until it was already too late.

With just a minute and a half left in the match, the Bisons showed some fight and went on a 7-0 scoring run. The visitors held on for a 68-60 win and series sweep.

With the losses, Manitoba falls to 6-10 in the Canada West standings.

With four games left, the Bisons are holding on to the final playoff spot.

“These last four games are huge,” said Harvey.

“We are right at the line there of making playoffs and not, so if we get two good wins we’ll be in playoffs […] if we can get more than two wins, I think that would be huge for us.”

The Bisons will be back in action Jan. 25 and 26 when they take on the Thompson Rivers University Wolfpack.

Tip-off for both games is 7 p.m. CST.
