he potentially dangerous consequences of overreacting through counterterrorism measures were highlighted in the annual J.W. Dafoe Political Studies Students’ Conference keynote speech Jan. 24.

Kicking off the 34th annual J.W. Dafoe Political Studies Students’ Conference, University of Toronto law professor Kent Roach delivered a keynote address assessing the state of counterterrorism in light of the rise of Daesh, also known as the Islamic State or ISIS. Titled “Counterterrorism at the Crossroads?” Roach’s address examined the sociopolitical implications of counterterrorism measures at the domestic and international levels.

“When we talk about terrorism,” began Roach, “we are in some ways captive of current and well-remembered events.”

Roach emphasized that terrorism, contrary to notions that tend to bind its emergence to the attacks on 9/11, has existed in Canada “since at least confederation.”

day-long training workshop titled “Municipal Campaign Boot Camp” was held at the legislature Jan. 27 in an attempt to get more women involved in the municipal elections coming fall.

Co-hosted by the Manitoba chapter of Equal Voice and Myrna Driedger, speaker of the Manitoba legislature, the event offered networking opportunities for women interested in running for office or women keen to undertake various roles within a political campaign.

Since its inception nationally in 2001, Equal Voice’s mandate has been to increase the representation of women in all levels of government and to lobby for changes at the municipal, provincial, and federal levels to encourage the participation of women in politics.

The film highlights the role of social enterprises and cooperatives in building an economic system based on principles of inclusion.

Role of governments

Leeson-Klym said that institutions and various levels of government can either champion or inhibit CED. “They’d use the principles of CED to guide decision-making across government - not just focused on single departments or programs like community services or neighbourhood renewal,” she said. “They would move their citizen engagement processes past consultation into real co-creation and partnership with communities.”

She said supporting CED means understanding the needs of communities and responding to those needs in a responsible manner.

“There are elements of this happening, but to really get there, we need a blend of strong advocacy from communities, responsive political leadership and healthy political debate, and capable public servants with adequate resources allocated to this kind of approach,” she said.

“We think that blend could start to control the unsustainable and unequal effects of our current economic model while building resilience and local prosperity here.”

ocated in the Smartpark Research and Technology Park at the U of M’s Fort Garry campus, the Richardson Centre for Functional Foods and Nutraceuticals (RCFFN) supports the province’s functional food industry by establishing linkages between academics, industry, and government.

Functional foods are modified foods claimed to improve well-being by providing benefits beyond the

natural nutrients the food contains.

The RCFFN’s director, Peter Jones, said the majority of the centre’s initiatives are built through partnerships with a variety of local, national, and global agricultural projects and companies, with an underlying goal of creating an “economically viable” functional food industry by working towards improving the standards of human nutrition in the country.

A catalyst for the research and

development of foods containing health benefits, Jones laid out how the centre can help provide a “big marketing push” for companies.

“We are dealing with a company that wants to test the cholesterollowering effectiveness of a beverage that has fermentable products in it,” he said.

“So, we will set up a trial with humans,” he continued. “The benefit of the company is that they will obtain, hopefully, a data set that shows that their product is effective in reducing bad cholesterol.”

“They can then go and put a label on the product that says: ‘reduces cholesterol’ or ‘ lowers our risk of heart disease.’”

Jones highlighted one project currently underway, the Manitoba Personalized Lifestyle Research Program (TMPLR).

“The TMPLR program was

designed to really look at a crosssectional snapshot of Manitobans in terms of what do they eat, how much do they exercise, how fit are they, how well do they sleep, what does their probiotic micro-biome look like,” he said.

The TMPLR program, by evaluating this cross-section, can help determine an individual's risk of developing high cholesterol, heart disease, cancer, and arthritis.

Through its collaboration with the U of M’s faculty of agriculture and food sciences and the Rady faculty of health sciences, the centre offers undergraduate students the opportunity to engage in the growing scope of nutraceutical research through what he dubbed the “tripleD approach” - discussion, discovery, and development.

With more than 20 studies usually taking place simultaneously, students

not enrolled in a similar area of study can still play a part by signing up to participate in the many food trials carried out by the centre. The centre provides remuneration “to cover some of the costs incurred” for participating students.

“For [TMPLR], we are trying to recruit 800 students,” said Jones.

“We are at 650 right now,” he continued. “We are actually looking for help in terms of volunteers not only to participate in studies but we are also looking at some students to help us get on board the bus and head out to places like Dauphin, places like Brandon.”

Jones noted the centre's research aims “to better the functional food industry, from both the scientific and economic perspective here in the province, across the prairie region, across Canada and even internationally.”

I

f someone is acting in a way that makes another person significantly uncomfortable, then that person should be made to leave.

Headline-worthy news last year was the Big Fun Festival adopting a zero-tolerance policy relating to discrimination. Anyone who made another person uncomfortable was first warned of the zero-tolerance policy. A second occurrence resulted in being banned from the festival.

The fact that Big Fun’s policy was deemed trailblazing at the time is almost shocking.

A recognized safer space implies that the venue has mechanisms to ensure the space will be free from discriminatory conduct aimed at marginalized people. There is training, regulations, and consequences in place to ensure that the space in made as safe as possible for people that are experiencing discriminatory behaviour. Policies covering what actions and behaviours result in expulsion from the venue should be put in place and shared. This is an important step in the process of creating safer spaces since it states clearly what will happen if you commit an offense. It also describes avenues available to victims of descrimination.

an experience that is clear of people who discriminate against others.

When a venue does not remove the person being discriminatory, the person who is being discriminated against is forced to go home to prevent further trauma. If there are no consequences to the actions of discriminators, there will be no reason, in their minds, for rehabilitative action to occur. The people that deserve to go out are the ones that treat people with respect, no matter what age, gender, sexuality, ability, or culture.

Safer spaces are not designed to ruin venues. They are designed to make them accessible to all people, regardless of sexuality, ability, age, gender, or ethnicity. Active supporters of safer spaces are helping the arts community. Someone who fears going out in public spaces because of their past experiences of discrimination and is vocal about change, is helping the arts community.

What is ruining the arts community is apologists who excuse discriminatory behaviour.

he state of affairs existing between the two major parties in the United States is extremely troubling.

The federal government was shut down Jan. 20 for little reason.

Republicans, in the majority, essentially held hostage the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP), which provides an inexpensive insurance option to children who belong to families who earn too much to qualify for Medicaid. The Republicans also refused to make a clean deal on the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA), which allows children of illegal immigrants - labelled “Dreamers” - to legally obtain a driver’s license, enrol in college or university, and secure over-the-table employment. The nearly 700,000 people falling under this program pay sales, local, and income taxes - contributing an estimated US $2 billion per year to the American economy.

The shutdown ended when the Democratic leadership was given a promise from Republican Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell that an open debate would be held on the fate of Dreamers before Feb. 8. Democrats then voted with the Republicans on a three-week extension of funding for the federal government.

Yet former President Barack Obama failed to use this effectively.

Instead, his government attempted to gain bipartisan approval for the flagship Democratic proposal, the Affordable Care Act, or Obamacare.

The program was developed from an idea of a conservative think tank in 1989 and was first passed in Massachusetts under Republican Mitt Romney. Ultimately, every single Republican voted against the bill, and the U.S. was left with a healthcare system that was nothing more than a watered-down giveaway to insurance companies instead of the true socialized medicine it could have been. These constant half-measures only help to further the country’s right-wing momentum.

When Republicans gain any kind of power, they do the opposite - offering little to no olive branches toward bipartisan agreement. Gerrymandering districts, providing a substantial tax cut on corporations and billionaires, and refusing to confirm the Supreme Court choice of a president for almost a year all occurred at the hands of the Republicans before the present fight over DACA. These are all ways Republicans fought tooth and nail for what they want, regardless of their disturbingly unpopular positions - be it their desire to enrich corporations at the expense of the middle class,

their heartless desire to cut social programs, or their callous attempts to end legal immigration altogether.

All this does is cause further disdain for congress - which recently hit a low of 16 per cent in approval rating.

When you have one party fighting for the most unpopular positions, and the other clearly afraid to fight for anything at all, it is no wonder Americans are fed up.

This style of political dysfunction has had disastrous effects on public policy, specifically economic policy. For example, the federal minimum wage of US $7.25 has not been increased in almost a decade.

Meanwhile, worker productivity is sky-high. Adjusted for inflation and productivity, American minimum wage in 2017 should have been around US $20 an hour.

Why is it that the U.S. spends more on their defence budget than the next eight countries combined, yet cannot seem to have a debate on socialized medicine without some pseudo-intellectual claiming it just cannot be afforded? The country has drifted so far right, and they are being left behind by every other major Western country because of it.

Unfortunately, the same tragic effects of these shifts hit those who vote for these politicians the hardest.

And the vicious cycle continues.

he Manitoban has once again decided to take on the task of selecting a handful of the many bands in Winnipeg we are most excited for.

This year we have recruited a few UMFM DJs to expand our list across genres.

Spooky Eyes

The latest project of Alannah Walker, of Cannon Bros, is Spooky Eyes. They have zero social media presence, but as Walker said in an interview, “I can confirm we are a real band.”

Walker is joined by David Schellenberg on bass, Ian Ellis on drums, and Brendon Yarish on guitar.

The quartet have only been together as a band for a month and a half. In that time, they have recorded some instrumental demos, which Walker describes as “pretty poppy” with “90s indie rock influences.”

Spooky Eyes headlined the Big Fun Festival show at the Handsome Daughter Jan. 25 and are looking to record and release songs as soon as possible.

He has collaborated with the likes of MC Woke and CJ the Grey, and performed alongside Beatox. Keep an eye on Malcolm-Jay, as he will definitely be making moves in the coming year.

Boniface

As one of three bands from Winnipeg heading to SXSW this year, people are taking notice of Boniface. The band, created by Micah Visser, released their album I Will Not Return As A Tourist Dec. 14 last year and Winnipeg has fallen in love with the new pop style of Boniface.

n Jan. 26, Contemporary Verse 2: The Canadian Journal of Poetry and Critical Writing (CV2) launched its three most recent issues at the Platform Centre for Photographic + Digital Arts. Founded in 1975, CV2 exists to help readers discover and enjoy poetry.

Bisons climb into top spot after sweeping Cougars Jason Pchajek, staff

U

niversity of Manitoba Bison women’s hockey climbed atop the Canada West after sweeping the University of Regina Cougars on the road this weekend.

Manitoba outscored Regina 5-1 over the weekend, earning a pair of wins to move into first place.

Friday

In the first game of the weekend, the second-ranked Bisons jumped ahead early and cruised to 4-1 over Regina.

The two Alanas came together to give the Bisons the early advantage.

Alanna Sharman sent a cross-ice pass to Alana Serhan, and the winger hammered a one-timer by Cougars goalie Jane Kish for the 1-0 lead.

Lauryn Keen and Mekaela Fisher also notched goals for the herd - their sixth and first, respectively - putting Manitoba up 3-0.

Lilla Carpenter-Boesch got Regina on the board midway through the second, but Serhan ’s second of the night put the game out of reach and the Bisons earned a 4-1 victory.

Manitoba’s Lauren Taraschuk made 18 saves to earn her ninth win of the season.

Saturday

The two sides met again for a Saturday matinee, where Erica Rieder led the way for the Bisons as they earned a 1-0 win.

Rieder notched the game-winner at the 4:15 mark of the opening period.

The defender put home a rebound on the rush to pot her seventh of the season.

The two sides clamped down defensively and the score stood.

Rachel Dyck made 29 saves to earn her third shutout of the season.

With the win, the Bisons earned

the weekend sweep and improved to 16-5-2-1 on the year.

The Bisons are on the road against the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns on Feb. 2-3.

he University of Manitoba Bison men’s hockey team swept aside the University of Regina Cougars at home over the weekend.

With the University of British Columbia Thunderbirds earning a surprising sweep of the University of Saskatchewan Huskies, the Bisons needed the four points to maintain third place in the Canada West.

Riding a three-game winning streak into next weekend’s action against the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns, the Bisons stand at 14-8-2 and have already punched their ticket to the playoffs.

oming from small towns in northwestern Ontario, Bison volleyball players Kevin Negus and Grant Legaree each blazed their own trail to the University of Manitoba.

Legaree, hailing from Atikokan, Ont., a town of just over 2,700 people nearly six hours east of Winnipeg, was offered a spot after practicing with the Bisons in his first year.

“I hadn’t really touched a volleyball for a couple weeks and I felt so rusty and these guys are swinging the ball harder than anything I’ve ever seen,” he said. “I felt pretty out of my league at first but I’m getting there.”

Legaree said he has had to make a few adjustments since coming up to the U of M, like getting used to the

speed of game and balancing athletics and the school aspect.

A big difference between Winnipeg and Atikokan is stoplights.

“The city [was] a big change for me. I didn’t have any stop lights on my streets growing up so the driving is a lot scarier, it’s an adjustment for sure,” Legaree said.

Despite not playing much competitive volleyball in high school, Legaree said his coach - who also happens to be his brother-in-law tried to get as many opportunities to play against top competition as possible. During his first year last season, when the Bisons were one of the top teams in the country, it was a wild ride, even from the bench.

Both Legaree and Negus have an affinity for the outdoors and enjoy hunting and fishing. Negus also played high school volleyball, but started much later than his teammate Legaree. Legaree started playing in Grade 7, Negus picked up the sport in his grade ten year.

“I think back when I was in Grade 10 I was five-foot-four and probably like 70, 80 pounds less than what I do now, so I didn’t have any expectations to make the team and I did though [and] ended up getting a little bit better every year,” Negus said.

Ending up at Manitoba was a nice touch for Negus, as he is relatively close to home and playing for the one of the best volleyball programs in Canada.

“It’s pretty special coming from a small town and being on such a good team with such a history of winning and everything,” he said.

“It’s close to home. I wasn’t too worried about going too far but the fact that I can still drive home if I need to, that’s nice. From what I’ve heard about U of M, having such a winning record from so long and how experienced Garth was it was a pretty easy choice.”

ichael St. Croix of the Bison men’s hockey team is a talented hockey player, as well as being business savvy.

The son of former NHL goalie Rick St. Croix was hesitant to share any kind of future business plans, but if hockey doesn’t work out for St. Croix, he should do fine in the business world.

“I have a lot of dreams, to be completely honest,” St. Croix said. “I’m definitely a dreamer, I’m always thinking about different ideas. St. Croix was originally drafted by the New York Rangers in 2011 in the fourth round after an extremely successful career with the Edmonton Oil Kings of the Western Hockey League. He couldn’t quite make the jump to the big leagues and played 13 games in the American Hockey League with the Hartford Wolfpack in 2013-14. St. Croix then spent the rest of the season with Greenville Road Warriors in the ECHL. The Road Warriors switched their name to Swamp Rabbits in

2015-16, and St. Croix spent two and a half seasons in Greenville, South Carolina. He racked up 129 points in 178 games during his time there.

“It was good. You get to play against a lot of good players, you learn a lot in all those situations, playing in a bunch of different cities,” St. Croix said. There are only “three lines so it was a lot of playing but at least for me it was time to move on and look at some other options.”

St. Croix was elected to play U SPORTS hockey back home with the Bisons and enrolled in the Asper school of business. He had to red shirt last season, but the rust has been quickly shaken off.

“I didn’t want to be playing in the minors the rest of my life,” St. Croix said. “There’s other things I have interests in so this was an opportunity to stay in the game, while looking forward to a future.”

ormer Bison men’s hockey player and coach Bob Lowes was inducted into the Bison hockey hall of fame Jan. 24.

Currently with the Vegas Golden Knights as the assistant director of player personnel, Lowes got his start at the University of Manitoba in 1985.

Lowes played with the Bisons until 1989 and served as assistant coach in the 1987-88 season when he was injured.

Born in Prince Albert, Sask., Lowes was recruited by Bison legend Wayne Fleming to come out and play in Manitoba.

“I went there not knowing anybody. Wayne had recruited me from Saskatchewan and in those days, you didn’t really travel very far for school you just went to your home province or somewhere close to your home,” Lowes said.

Lowes and Fleming formed an immediate connection, and Fleming made good on everything he said he could do for Lowes.

“I believed in Wayne. He was a

coach that I wanted to play for,” he said. “We had a rapport right away from the first time we met. I knew I could trust him, he was bang on with everything that he said he could do for me.”

When Lowes was out with a back injury he took a spot behind the bench, and from that vantage point learned a lot from Fleming as the two forged a deeper friendship. Fleming knew Lowes planned to become a

coach after he was done playing.

In 1989 Lowes graduated from the U of M with a bachelor of recreation and took a head coaching gig with the Nipawan Hawks of the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL). The Hawks won the SJHL championship and ANAVET Cup in 1990.

Lowes then spent time with Seattle in the Western Hockey League (WHL) as an assistant coach, before then taking the head coaching job for the Brandon Wheat Kings from 1992-2001. He won the WHL and Canadian Hockey League (CHL) coach of the year in 1996. Lowes jumped over the border to coach the Regina Pats from 20012004, again winning the CHL and WHL coach of the year award in 2002. Lowes came back to Brandon in 2005 as an amateur scout, and moved to the Ottawa Senators as an amateur scout from 2007-2014. He was director of amateur scouting in Ottawa until 2016, before moving to Vegas in 2017.

Lowes said learning from Fleming

during his time at Manitoba was huge, as Fleming showed him a different side of hockey.

“I think the biggest thing Wayne taught me was there was more to the game, more analytics of the game,” he said. “He got me to start thinking like a coach.”

Lowes said he feels fortunate to have done something within hockey as a career.

“I think we become involved in the game because we love the game,” he said “To do something you love for a vocation, I think it’s that much more of a bonus so I look at that all the time and I’m very blessed.”

Being inducted into the Bison hockey hall of fame has a special meaning for Lowes.

“To have that legacy up on a plaque in an arena that’s named after Wayne, I’m very honoured,” he said.
