Facing Canada’s residential school history Visionary Conversations series looks at how to move forward Garett Williams, staff

M

ore than a year after the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada (TRC) issued 94 calls to action, discussions toward what reconciliation looks like – and how it can be achieved – continue.

The University of Manitoba faced the subject with the opening of its 2016-17 Visionary Conversations series on Sept. 21, hosting a fourmember panel discussion examining how to move from theory to action in reconciliation.

“Reconciliation needs Canada to stop fighting First Nations people” – Lenard Monkman, Visionary Conversations panelist The panel included Manitoba NDP MLA for St. Johns Nahanni Fontaine; Winnipeg-based film producer and former Churchill member of Parliament Tina Keeper; CBC Indigenous producer and Red Rising Magazine co-founder Lenard Monkman; and National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation (NCTR) director Ry Moran.

A crowd of students, academics, and community members at-large filled the Robert Schultz Theatre to participate in a dialogue about how Canada can effectively address its Indian residential school past.

Over its six-year mandate, the TRC heard more than 6,700 residential school survivor and witness statements. It released 94 calls to action in June 2015. Its final report was released in December.

For more than 100 years, indigenous children were removed from their home communities and schooled and assimilated in government-funded, church-run institutions before the final school closed in 1996.

Reports of physical and sexual abuse at the schools are common.

In opening remarks, all four panelists acknowledged that reconciliation takes many different shapes. Monkman remarked that if 100 people were polled on the street, they would return as many different visions for how to move forward.

“What does real reconciliation look like if First Nation values clash with capitalism, with resource extraction, with the understanding of how important water is?” asked Monkman.

“We have all of these different conversations about reconciliation.”

However, all agreed education is a key step toward instilling the next generation with the tools and con-

fidence to face Canada’s residential school history.

“The truth is that we have been through an extraordinary cultural genocide and we have endured, through many generations, a massive, massive amount of trauma which we know and identify as historic trauma,” said Keeper.

esearch associations, faculty, and university administrations alike are welcoming the return of a Statistics Canada survey that supporters say will provide crucial data on the Canadian academic landscape.

he Canadian Federation of Students–Manitoba (CFS-MB) is calling on the Progressive Conservative (PC) government to pass a bill that requires public postsecondary institutions to have sexual assault policies.

The Post-Secondary Violence and Sexual Harassment Policies Act, or Bill 204, was introduced as a private member’s bill by New Democratic Party (NDP) MLA and education critic Wab Kinew to the legislature in June.

Bill 204 would require Manitoba’s universities and colleges to develop standalone sexual harassment and violence policies. The proposed law would also mandate that the institutions publicly report when incidents relating to those policies occur.

The provincial NDP introduced a similar bill last spring, but it did not make it past the first reading before the April 2016 provincial election was called. Since then, the PC government has not indicated that

it will reconsider that bill nor have they released any plans to examine Kinew’s private member’s bill.

“We as an organization are supportive of any bill that addresses this issue and we’ll support any legislation that ensures that students are safe on campus,” he said.

ince the last federal election, Canada has been under a peaceful slumber. Many seem to think Trudeau and his new Liberal government have ushered in the end of history. Since Canada drowned in red and Trudeau took the House of Commons by storm, the government has gained significant ground in the polls. Following the election, the new government has increased by nearly 15 points in approval ratings averaged across three different polling companies. This has landed the Trudeau government in the good books of a whopping 60 per cent of Canadians.

At the height of his popularity, Trudeau had an approval rating of 65 per cent. During that grace period, he was the second most popular prime minister since the eighties, only trailing one point behind Jean Chrétien.

So what exactly has our new prime minister done to warrant the glory he and his new government find themselves basking in? Honestly, not much.

But worry not. Our new fearless leader not only has a shining head of hair, but he also does things like take nonpartisan selfies and give speeches drenched in Hallmarkbrand optimism!

Quite frankly, it’s Trudeau’s media savvy and nothing more that has captured the public’s heart.

In hindsight, this is rather refreshing. Stephen Harper, our last prime minister, had those on the left questioning whether or not his regime was

While it is common and often expected that municipal and provincial governments will disagree on matters of policy, it is perplexing to see these disagreements manifest themselves in such a public and frequent fashion. To the casual observer, it paints the picture that the two levels of government simply are not on the same page when it comes to a number of key issues.

One has to wonder how relations between the city and province have deteriorated this quickly, to the point

where blatant naysaying and the outright rejection of municipal priorities have become regular features of our public discourse. Whatever happened to working out your differences behind closed doors?

he Government of Canada has declared October Cyber Security Awareness Month. This annual campaign educates people about cyber criminals’ ability to exploit everyone’s daily reliance on computers and the Internet. The security of electronically stored information is a particularly important concern for universities, where computer networks must store grades, research, and the personal information of thousands of students, faculty, and staff. Earlier this year, the University of Calgary (U of C) experienced the consequences of hackers gaining unauthorized access to this data.

In late May, after a number of members of its community lost access to their electronic files and e-mail accounts, the U of C announced that

their network had been the target of a malware attack. Malware, or any software that purposefully disrupts a computer’s normal operations, infected multiple systems on the campus, spreading rapidly from one computer to another throughout the university’s network.

On June 7, vice president of finance and services Linda Dalgetty announced that the university had given $20,000 in Bitcoins to the unknown hacker(s) who launched the attack. This payment was a sort of ransom. In exchange, the U of C received codes that the hacker(s) claimed would enable the IT staff to restore the corrupted files. The sound of writing

Writer-in-residence to mentor students on the music of language Tobi Nifesi, staff, with files from Michael Elves

T

his fall, the University of Manitoba’s Centre for Creative Writing and Oral Culture welcomes Canadian poet, writer, and sound and performance artist Steven Ross Smith as the centre’s writer-in-residence for the semester. In this capacity, Smith will be mentoring aspiring student-writers during scheduled sessions at the centre.

Smith, who is currently based in Banff and Galiano Island, B.C., has been writing, publishing, and performing in Canada, the U.S., and abroad since the early 70s. His catalogue of 13 published books – including the fluttertongue book series – and performances have seen him win awards such as the 2005 Saskatchewan Book of the Year and the 2006 bpNichol Chapbook Award.

In 1971, after watching and hearing sound and performance poetry ensemble the (Four) Horsemen, Smith was inspired to explore sound poetry.

Since then, he has worked to infuse performance and sound poetry – an

artistic tandem of literature and music – into his writing.

“Performance and sound poetry have been part of my repertoire since I was a young writer,” Smith said in an interview with Michael Elves for UMFM’s Your Campus Today show.

“I consider any reading to be a performance and I have to give myself to that event with that attitude. I do incorporate sound poetry in my readings.”

For Smith, writing and language is more than just text and speech. It is a form of music, and in that sense, ought to be composed, arranged, and transposed as it is produced. The process of composing language determines how it is perceived and received, says Smith.

“Compositional process is very important to me,” he said. “I am kind of a sculptor in the sense that I am working language to its core, as opposed to feeling like I have a message to give to the world.

“I am not a musician, but I am

certainly influenced by music. In a way, language is music. It is not just a message to communicate an idea; it has a measure of life on its own. So, when I am working, I am looking for that right note, hum, and resonance.

Sometimes it comes naturally and sometimes, it comes from a lot of reworking, thinking, and research.”

Smith, who used to be the director of literary arts at the Banff Centre, has been a writer-in-residence for different organizations such as Red River College and Saskatoon Public Library, and is a mentor to several young writers.

He hopes to spend his residence at the University of Manitoba working with and mentoring students attempting to develop themselves as writers.

“In my work here at the centre, I will be feeling my way to see what fits here, but I hope to engage with the materiality of language – the sense that poetry is of the body and sentences can have torque.

“I have been a writer for four decades and, for at least three of those decades, I have done mentoring work in different contexts. I am just really interested in helping writers to develop what they want to do, have some affirmation and engagement – to find community to have a conversation with about writing.”

Smith is available for scheduled mentorship sessions from September to December at the University of

Manitoba’s Centre for Creative Writing and Oral Culture. He will be hosting free workshops every Wednesday for six weeks from Oct. 12 to Nov. 16 at 390 University College.

Indie film shows small budget movies can deliver big scares Jess Kostuik

I

n the already-long list of home invasion thrillers, Uruguayan writer/director Fede Alvarez, who helmed the 2013 remake of The Evil Dead, makes a new addition with the low-budget indie flick Don’t Breathe.

The format is as follows: the lead character, Rocky (Jane Levy) is trapped in her Detroit home with an abusive mother and her boyfriend, along with her younger sister Diddy.

Rocky dreams of one day whisking Diddy out of their toxic home to beautiful California where they can start a new life.

To make this dream a reality, Rocky, her badass boyfriend Money (Daniel Zovatto), and nice guy Alex (Dylan Minnette) break into the homes of affluent people and steal their nicest possessions.

It is a system that has served them well, sticking to their one rule of not taking any cash. However, one day Money gets a tip about a man (Stephen Lang) living alone and sitting on over $300,000 in cash.

Eventually they all agree to attempt the robbery, as it will be the last crime the three teens need before they hit the sunny and tranquil beaches of Cali.

Like many other films within the horror genre, the film’s setup is chock-full of clichés. Luckily for us, Alvarez explodes these clichés using authentic, well-employed cinematic techniques and succeeds in making a terrifically suspenseful and claustrophobic thriller. Alvarez doesn’t wreck the pace of the movie with boring exposition and details. He shares only the necessary details of our three protagonists with finesse and ease.

That being said, there is one crucial detail to the plot: the man they are robbing is blind, making the heist seemingly impossible to fail. Alas, despite their target’s lack of sight, the outwardly simple theft goes awry almost immediately when the blind man turns out to be a worthier adversary than they could have ever predicted.

The film quickly turns to a game of

cat and mouse, with the teens trapped in the house trying to escape the blind man’s clutches. This proves to be a more difficult task than anticipated due to his extensive knowledge of his home, paired with his incredibly perceptive hearing. As one could guess from the man’s ability, there is little dialogue from this point on, with the movie relying on the skills of the filmmakers to deliver the scares.

Both Alvarez and the fantastic cinematographer Pedro Luque use quick camera movement and editing, night vision sequences, and many other marvelously inventive devices to bring their vision to life.

Alvarez’s skillful direction paired with strong performances from the entire cast – Lang in particular works wonders and terrifies all as the antagonist – work to create a surprisingly

substantial installment in the horror genre.

For those who are still suffering the aftereffects of summer blockbuster bombs, Don’t Breathe is the perfect fix.

heo Deezar is among the elite quarterbacks in the CIS and he has been patiently waiting to prove it.

Anyone who has seen Deezar take the field knows the 6’5”, 225 lbs QB is quick on his feet, has a fantastic ability to throw the deep ball, and is precise in his reads. What oppositional defenses might have trouble believing is that off the field he’s easygoing, approachable, and grounded.

He is a positive role model making the people around him better.

With the Bisons currently 2-2, his numbers are very impressive.

Through 157 passing attempts, 102 have been completed for an average of 9.7 yards per attempt. Deezar has thrown for 1527 yards, putting him second in the country. He has also completed ten touchdowns, which ranks him third.

In his second year as the Bisons’ starter, Deezar has earned some illustrious recognition, including being one of four Bison players selected for the 2016 East-West Bowl. Going into week four against Saskatchewan, he had won back-to-back Smitty’s Bison Athlete of the Week.

While awards for his offensive prowess continue to accumulate, Deezar has made tough decisions.

He’s worked hard; he knows that his success cannot be taken for granted.

Life with the herd

Deezar is a genuine team player and a true competitor. He wants to win, and he wants to do it when the opposition is at their strongest. As a quarterback, he believes this is an essential quality, and the key to this is being prepared. There are also battles within the positions for a starting place, but it should never affect team morale.

“It’s never really a competition,” Deezar said. “If you’re always fighting within the team, you’ll never be able to work together as a team.”

Quarterbacks, whether starting or on the bench, have to work together to be the starting pivot if called into game action.

he University of Manitoba men’s hockey team is gearing up for another tough season. Although the majority of the team that finished last season in fourth place in the Canada West is staying with them, they have done their fair share of recruiting.

Bisons head coach Mike Sirant was quick to point out that although they have gotten better, so has the rest of the conference.

“As much as we have improved, there also other teams in our conference that have improved,” he said. “It has been a real arms race. We know it’ll be a tough conference with a lot of parity.”

Two key moves by the Bisons have been the recruiting of brothers Shawn and Brad Bowles. The twins from Elkhorn, MB are looking to make an impact this season.

his weekend the Manitoba Bisons women’s soccer team was on the road against the Lethbridge Pronghorns and the Calgary Dinos. The women won 2-1 on Saturday against the Pronghorns but lost on Sunday to the Dinos by a score of 3-0.

The Bisons are now 2-3-1 and sit fourth in the Prarie division with seven points.

n Saturday, the University of Manitoba Bisons football team took on the eighth-ranked Saskatchewan Huskies in their 2016 homecoming game. The Bisons scored 25 unanswered points in the second half to take a resounding 38-17 win.

The Huskies opened up the first quarter by trying to establish their run game, but with little success.

On the Bisons’ first possession they went the opposite route with second year receiver Jesse Walker and Theo Deezar hooking up for a 65-yard catch.

Deezar tried to hit Walker again in the end zone the very next play but to no avail. The Bisons eventually found the end zone with a oneyard catch from Macho Bockru – his first ever CIS touchdown.

Saskatchewan opened up the second quarter with a 20-yard touchdown to Ben Getzlaf to make the score 14-7. The Bisons replied a few minutes later with a 36-yard field goal from Brady Mikoluff.

The teams traded another pair of field goals towards the end of the half, with the Huskies holding a 17-13 lead at halftime.

On Manitoba’s first possession of the second half, Deezar and Shai Ross worked some magic. First the pair connected on a 44-yard pass to get the herd into the red zone.

Then Deezar found Ross in the end zone with a perfectly timed throw to make the score 20-17 for the Bisons.
