Background of the fee hike

Last year, UMSU council passed a $32 per semester fee hike to support four projects: child care facility improvements, scholarships and bursaries for indigenous students, undergraduate research grants, and renovations to UMSU spaces in University Centre.

Under the proposed fee, in the next 10 years $2.4 million would be designated to expand the daycare centre on campus to create more spaces for children of undergraduate students, $5 million would go towards funding undergraduate research awards, and another $5 million would go towards fund indigenous scholarships and bursaries.

It’s not acceptable that the administration has unilaterally moved on a policy course that disregards the input of students, especially when the area in question is of essential concern to students and students only.

We must remind ourselves that the administration is meant to work with us, for us. Passing punitive policies with little regard for our constructive criticism is indicative of anything but. Clearly, the long arm of the administration is overdue for a slap on the wrist.

Receiving unbiased grants from government institutes is not always easy, and they are not always as large as the sums big companies can offer.

When you are doing your own research, and making your own decisions, finding unbiased research is key. It is not always easy, but a good way to approach it is to look at who is funding the research you are reading. Does the sponsor have finances at stake? Are these same findings supported by groups devoted to nonprofit research? If the answer to the first question is yes, and the second is no, you may want to take their claims with a grain of salt.

The pages offer a stunning look

into the astronomy studies of ancient civilizations. They use illustrations to track the movement of Venus over a hundred years. It is one of only four codices we today have been able to retrieve, partially because of the fragility of fig bark over time, and partially because conquistadors and priests during the Spanish Conquest of the Americas burned many Mayan books, calling them “falsehoods of the devil.” The other three found their way into Europe in the 16th century, most likely as souvenirs.

Bisons trounce Golden Bears in football

O

n Friday, the Manitoba Bisons football team played the Alberta Golden Bears. Both teams entered this contest 0-2, desperately needing a win to turn things around.

The Bisons cruised to victory, capturing their first win of the season by a score of 42-12.

Jesse Walker fumbled on the Bisons’ first drive and Griffin Dear recovered and returned it for a touchdown, leading to an early 10-0 lead for the Bears. Walker redeemed himself with a 45-yard reception later in the quarter.

Despite the early deficit, the herd was able to turn it around. Riley Harrison caught a 45-yard bomb for a touchdown from quarterback Theo Deezar, which started a 23-0 run for the Bisons closing out the first half. The herd continued that run into the fourth quarter, scoring 40 unanswered points.

Aerial attack

Deezar had an outstanding first half, completing 15 of 19 passes for 247 yards and threw for two touchdowns, as well as rushing one in from the one yard line himself. He continued that in the second half, finishing

the game having completed 21 of 27 passes for 345 yards and four passing touchdowns. He was safe with the ball and did not turn it over once.

As good as the Bison offense was, the defense stepped up in a big way as well. They held the Alberta offence to a total of 132 yards in the first half.

In the second quarter, the defense stopped the Golden Bears in their end zone twice, putting four points on the board for the herd.

The defense continued where it left off when the second half began.

Their first time on the field resulted in one of the Bisons’ three interceptions of the half, this one by cornerback Tristen O’Meara, which led to a Ryan Jones 22-yard field goal. Late in the third quarter with the Golden Bears in the red zone, Bison defensive back Evinn Lyons-Keely came up with a timely interception, returning it for

75 yards. Jayden McKoy added yet another interception for the home team in the fourth quarter.

The defense finished a strong game, allowing only 251 yards and not giving up a single offensive touchdown.

When asked postgame about the play of his defense, head coach Brian Dobie said that the defense did a good job to set up the offence.

his past weekend, the University of Manitoba women’s soccer team opened up their 2016 home campaign against the Saskatchewan Huskies and the Regina Cougars. The Bisons suffered a heartbreak on Saturday by losing 1-0 in the final minutes of the game. On Sunday the herd was held to a 0-0 draw by the Regina Cougars.

Manitoba is now 1-2-1 on the season and sits in a three-way tie for fourth in the Prairie division.

The Huskies were finally rewarded for their efforts when Leesa Eggum headed in off a corner in the 81st minute, breaking Bison hearts. Manitoba stormed back and generated some quality chances, but could not find the late equalizer.
