Midwifery students rally for cancelled program

UCN-U of M students offered places in nursing as troubled program is shuttered TOM INGRAM, STAFF

S

tudents and supporters rallied at the Manitoba legislature June 30 in support of the province’s only bachelor of midwifery program, which the government announced last week will not offer courses in the fall.

The program, offered jointly by the University of Manitoba and the University College of the North (UCN), had been on track to enter its second year with a cohort of 14 students. The joint program superseded a previous UCN-only program that operated from 2006 to 2014 and graduated only nine students during that time.

In the run up to April’s election, Manitoba’s previous NDP government promised a funding increase of $844,000 to support the more expensive joint program, which would need full-time instructional staff, the capacity for an annual intake of students, and new academic supports for students. However, the new Progressive Conservative government’s first budget, released in May, did not include a funding increase for the midwifery program.

Funding was maintained at the previous level of $859,000, effectively making delivery of the joint program impossible. Since only the joint program is approved by the College of Midwives of Manitoba (CMM), while the standalone UCN program no longer has approval, the program as approved by CMM cannot proceed.

Jim Scott, the director of communications for UCN, said in an email the two universities have been working closely with the province to ensure the 14 students “have options for continuing their academic careers in September 2016.”

“This work is continuing,” he wrote.

A representative from education minister Ian Wishart’s office could not be reached by press time. Wishart said in question period June 13 that “there will be a program in place” for current midwifery students in the fall, and a June 28 government press release said the province is working toward a “new educational pathway” for midwifery students.

“We remain committed to the students who have completed the first year of UCN’s bachelor of midwifery program,” Wishart said in the release.

Midwifery students were subsequently offered places in the U of M’s nursing program for the fall.

According to NDP education critic Wab Kinew, remote communities in the north have a particular need for midwives.

“When you talk to people in northern Manitoba, one of the top overall health priorities that they have consistently identified is returning birthing to their communities,” Kinew said in an interview.

“People in large northern First Nations like Norway House don’t

want to have to come to Winnipeg or Dauphin or Brandon. They’d rather see the ability to deliver babies at home.”

“Perhaps what we really need in those [northern] communities are nurses that are trained as – with an additional midwives course rather than midwives themselves,” he said.

“Certainly, there’s a need in every community for nursing and in many of these communities it’s tough for them to find nurses and many of them are there under contract and in and out in the communities.

“So the nature of filling that need might change from midwives alone, stand-alone midwife positions, to something that is more an evolution of nursing.”

‘Where’s our program?’

The call for applications for the bachelor of midwifery program’s 2015 cohort said students would need “flexibility in their education plan and program delivery.”

Jill Larner, one of the program’s stranded students, was not expecting the program would be cancelled abruptly.

“Our acceptance letter told us that some of the policies and procedures were under review and if any changes were going to be made to this program, that there was a contingency plan in place and we would be seamlessly transitioned into it,” Larner said.

“Apparently that’s not the case right now.”

Lauren Henderson, another student, pointed to the cost of pursuing midwifery training as a particularly strong pressure on students.

“It’s not really a program where you can work. Especially going into our clinical placement, you can’t work.

You’re on call 24/7.”

Both Larner and Henderson said a spot in nursing at the U of M is not a substitute for midwifery training.

“A midwife is a primary caregiver,” said Larner. “Nurses are amazing at what they do. It’s a great profession, but currently in Winnipeg right now, they aren’t primary caregivers, so they wouldn’t be the ones in charge.”

Henderson agreed. “It would be like saying to an electrician, ‘you can’t be an electrician, but you can be a plumber.’ They’re completely different, but they’re both trades. We don’t want to be nurses, we want to be midwives.”

Both students pointed to sacrifices they and their colleagues have made in order to enroll in the program.

Larner said she sold her house to finance her education.

When asked what their short-term future holds in the event that the

midwifery program is not delivered in the fall, both Larner and Henderson said they didn’t know.

I

had recently turned nineteen the first time I went to a gay club. I was in Berlin and I had come out to my friends and family not long before. In all honesty, I was incredibly anxious.

I was in a new place, going to my first gay club with new people and I had no idea what to expect.

Moments after walking through those doors, however, all of my anxiety melted away. This was not only because Beyoncé was playing loudly and the drinks were strong, but also the fact that no bar or club that I had been to previously had ever felt so comfortable, so inviting, and so safe for everyone there.

When I woke up the morning of

June 12 and scrolled through the news articles reporting that dozens of people had been killed at a gay nightclub in Orlando, I was too shocked to react properly. Many of us were. I went through the entire day in a daze, not knowing whether I, a gay man, was safe anymore going out at night. I had never felt like such a target in my life.

Watching and reading various news reports, it has become clearer with each new piece of evidence revealed, that this tragedy was another instance of hate-fuelled extremism. There have been, and there will continue to be, discussions and arguments about the true motives of the shooter and what should

be done to prevent these senseless easy thinking that our society does attacks in the future. T

he waters of international politics have grown more turbulent as of late. By now, the news headlines are all too familiar. For the past year, many of us have watched in horror as presumptive Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump has gained political traction by proselytizing against immigration. Meanwhile, this last month saw the same antiimmigration sentiment spill over into the United Kingdom, as a majority of voters there opted to leave the European Union.

Much of the dialogue in these two countries has been distinctly racist. While both Trump and Brexit have given voice and vehicle to these views, they are not the causes themselves. They are merely manifestations brought about through political opportunism.

This is not a new phenomenon. It has existed everywhere – including in western liberal democracies that have often been on the wrong side of history on issues of immigration, race, and culture. It is, however, unnerving that there is such a distinct cleavage in popular opinion on the issues of immigration and multiculturalism in this post-war era. Globalization and improved international mobil-

ity were supposed to unite the world, not divide it.

Protecting against racism is not only the responsibility of our political leaders. Racism often occurs on a grassroots level long before political agents are motivated to either capitalize on, or resist it. Universities and the education system as a whole need to continue playing a significant role in ensuring leadership on these issues.

Universities are unique – it is difficult to find other communities that facilitate such direct, large-scale interactions of individuals from different walks of life.

This diversity is why a university campus is one of the best places to break down barriers between people on both an academic and experiential level. Multiculturalism on campus is something to be cherished.

Through exposure to the myriad of cultures and collective experiences that our world has to offer, we are bet-

What has happened here, however, Baum and O’Dea continued to gather is that a huge cloud releasing cold data from the same galaxy with the lumps of molecular gas is fuelling its use of the Hubble telescope.

With the later launch of the Herschel space observatory in May 2009, they had enough data to make a thesis project, and had their graduate student Grant Tremblay work on the particular galaxy that housed the black hole.

When the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) came online in March 2013, it allowed them to take a better look at the object in question and observe the black hole in action.

“Basically, as you can see, anytime there was a new technology or new observatory that came online with some new capability, we would turn it on this object because we knew it was a really interesting object,” Baum said.

Expect the pair to jump on the next available technology that can allow them to take another good look at this fascinating phenomenon.

Further work to be done

Thanks to ALMA, they were able to use the evidence from 1994 and see it more clearly . However, O’Dea noted there is still a bit more work to be done. Only the brightest clouds have been observed, and being able to go deeper to take a look at the fainter gas would give them a better idea of how the clouds are moving and how the black hole’s fuelling process works.

“The thing with ALMA is it’s hard to get time on it, and it takes quite a while to reduce the data. So, you know, every year, you can get maybe another more detailed observation or another object or whatever so it builds up slowly over time,” said Baum.

But, as Baum noted, it is possible to gather a group of galaxies that are showing the same type of activity as the one in question, and they do exist.

By doing that, additional information can be gathered while waiting to try and get new observations.

Clearly, you need to make the most of your time with ALMA, and they have done just that.

NGC-1068

Along with this discovery, Baum and O’Dea have many other projects they’re working on. The New General Catalogue (NGC) is a collection of deep-sky objects that contains a different galaxy called the NGC 1068 that they have been observing for some time .

“We’ve used ALMA on a different type of object. It’s a spiral galaxy and

it has a black hole that’s being fuelled,” O’Dea said.

Given how close this object is, they were able to see the finer details. What they found was a ring of molecular gas around the black hole, forming a donut shape.

“This is the first time that we’ve been ever been able to see things, this molecular donut, around these active galaxies. For 30 years we thought it had to be there, but this is the first time we’re actually observing it, ” said O’Dea.

Researchers from the University of Pennsylvania have found that squids in the genus Galiteuthis use their own imperfection as a means of survival.

The new research, which was published last month in the Journal of the Royal Society Interfa ce, shows that the Galiteuthis squid is able to camouflage itself from predators thanks to extremely inefficient light cells behind their eyes.

Predators that search for the glass squid are frequently fooled by its transparent body, which fails to cast a shadow. Like a chameleon, the squid blends into its surroundings. Yet most species of glass squid are given away by their distinctive eyes, which jut out from the rest of the body. This is remedied by special cells beneath the Galiteuthis squid’s eyes, which are equipped to deal with

this problem. The cells emit light in – the creature would expose itself to a process known as bioluminescence, predators.

New farmer’s market series to hit Exchange District alleyways Alleyways Market to bring fresh produce, local product downtown LAUREN SIDDALL, STAFF

T

he Exchange District holds many iconic events over the summer months, ranging from Jazz Fest to biking restaurant tours. This year, Exchange District enthusiasts have something new to look forward to – a farmer’s market series.

“The idea was to bring an outdoor market to the Exchange District in a way that is a little bit different than what happens with other outdoor markets,” said David Pensato, Alleyways Market organizer. “It’s been probably circulating in my mind for two or three years.”

The twist? The market takes place in alleyways around the Exchange.

“There are so many events in the Exchange that are focused on Old Market Square, which is an incredible place to be, but there are so many other distinctive aspects to the Exchange, like our alleyways.

It’s really wonderful to see these spaces being used for such a great event. These sorts of spaces really add to the character of our national historic site,” said Karen Kornelsen, marketing and communications coordinator for Exchange District BIZ. The event series brings together a mixture of local food vendors and makers in the alleyways. While the market looks to bring in new and exciting options to the neighbour-

hood, they are not trying to compete with existing businesses in the Exchange.

“We’re not bringing in food trucks or anything like that, it’s all stuff that should complement the local businesses. As we move to different alleyways for subsequent markets, we’ll get other Exchange businesses involved,” said Pensato.

The first installment saw Forth and the Mitchell Block serving up some food to market-goers, along with the other vendors brought in for the event. The market also brought fresh produce – a rarity for those living downtown.

Bad Taste is a tribute to raw exploitation films that sees the gamer control Chet (played by Spencer Rice), an apathetic cop trying to escape the zombie-infested city of Victoria before it’s hit by a nuclear bomb sent to destroy the epidemic.

The side-scrolling game features 20 levels of zombie action, fully animated cinematics, and beautifully distorted 2D backgrounds that were inspired by real locations in Victoria and surrounding parts of Vancouver Island.

Victoria-based comic artist Celx Requin has been working on the project for over two years. A soft launch has been set for this month.

ven though Winnipeg is fresh from June’s Aboriginal Day and Jazz Winnipeg Festival, there are two more festivals this month to keep our spirits high, bodies grooving, and minds engaged: the Winnipeg Folk Festival and the Winnipeg Fringe Theatre Festival.

The two festivals will be featuring several local and international artists and actors. Across the two festivals, there will be over 300 shows, so there is no doubt that festival goers will have to pick and choose which shows to attend.

Here are the some of the standout shows and performers you should look out for this festive season.

Winnipeg Folk Festival

From July 7-10, Birds Hill Provincial Park will be humming with harmonious tunes. With nine stages to choose from, some in the woods and others in the field, there will be lots of space for singalongs, lawn chair relaxation, and dancing as talented performers serenade the crowd.

Among those performers are the members of the German band Milky Chance. The duo, who can play several instruments between them, will be performing songs from their platinum-selling record Stolen Dance.

Their music is a fusion of folk, reggae, and electronic dance and they are well-known for their energetic performances.

Off the back of his latest record, Earthly Days, local Winnipeg singer and songwriter William Prince will be on hand to perform the heartwarming and soulful folk music he is famed for. The baritone loves to tell stories through his music and during his performances; this makes for a very stirring and emotive concert experience.

Winnipeg folk trio Red Moon Road will be showcasing their third and latest album, Sorrows and Glories.

They will be closing out the mainstage on the last day of the festival.

Formed in 2012, the band has toured across Europe and North America taking their soulful and balladry sound with them. They are known for their excellent storytelling and captivating performances and are definitely one to look out for at the festival.

Raised by a preacher and a teacher, Son Little (formerly Aaron Livingston) has the gift of molding North American classics into enchanting blues that touch the soul.

Having collaborated and performed with the Roots and RJD2, the Los Angeles native has mastered how to captivate his audience with stirring on-stage performances. He is one of the solo acts to watch out for this weekend.
