Grad students vote to index fees to inflation

Students will pay an average of $2.74 more per year TY BRASS, STAFF

U

of M graduate students voted to index fees to inflation in a referendum in early December.

Following an analysis of University of Manitoba Graduate Students' Association (UMGSA) finances and ensuing recommendation that the question be proposed to students by the finance committee,

Online voting took place from Dec. 5 to 7. Of the 765 grad students who voted, 57 per cent voted ‘yes’ and 43 per cent voted ‘no.’

According to UMGSA president Carl Neumann, the voter turnout — which was 20.3 per cent of the graduate student population — is consistent with other UMGSA votes over recent years, and the vote went “basically the way [the UMGSA] expected.”

“Before the vote, both at council and with grad students at large, we had a fair bit of support, but naturally also some people who felt the contrary,” said Neumann.

“So we knew that opinion was mixed, but felt strongly that a larger number of grad students supported the indexation of our fees to inflation. Fortunately, we were correct, and we did receive support from a clear majority of grad students.”

UMGSA fees have remained stag-

nant for over a decade, while UMSU passed a motion to index their union fees to inflation in 2015.

Neumann said the referendum was put forward as a response to financial pressure, noting the purchasing power of the fees collected by the UMGSA had decreased every year.

“The association’s budget has been stretched to the limit,” he said.

“The indexation of our fees will hold the line and allow us to maintain

grants that we provide to grad student groups and individuals.”

Current UMGSA fees stand at $84.87 for each of the fall and winter semesters and $5 for the summer semester.

The average rate of inflation in Canada over the past 10 years has been 1.565 per cent.

Calculating the fee increase using this average would result in graduate students paying $1.33 more for fall and winter semesters and eight cents more

for the summer semester. This would be a total increase of $2.74 per year.

Neumann said while he could not say for sure what the UMGSA executive would choose to do next year, the additional fees will directly support graduate students.

“Grad students can expect to continue receiving robust services and support from the UMGSA, as they do now.”

The statement touches on challenges including racism and discrimination, sexual harassment at the university and the loss of international student healthcare.

The statement addresses numerous allegations of “inappropriate behaviour” made against university faculty that came to light in the last year.

The statement includes demands from the UMGSA that “those in positions of authority do a consistently better job in responding to allegations and breaches swiftly and effectively.”

International students hit by healthcare cuts

The statement also addresses the provincial government’s decision in March 2018 to no longer provide international students with universal healthcare.

The statement calls the loss of provincial health coverage for international students “a significant hit,” and adds the UMGSA “worked hard to ensure that all students will maintain equivalent coverage at the lowest possible cost.”

“We were very pleased that the university was willing to pay for this coverage for this academic year, and we will continue to work with university staff to maintain the best outcomes we can achieve.”

he University of Manitoba Graduate Students’ Association (UMGSA) is restructuring its executive team.

The number of executive positions is being reduced from six to five by combining the VP external (VPE) and VP marketing (VPME) into a single position, VP services and support. The VP academic position will also serve as one of the association’s three representatives at the university’s senate.

The combined changes are expected to save more than $16,000 annually, according to UMGSA president Carl Neumann.

Using the career fair to prepare for your future

U of M’s 2019 career fair offers a chance to learn, connect and grow REBECCA BALAKRISHNAN, THE WORK LIFE

Of course, these sorts of events can be a challenge to navigate without guidance. Here are tips to make the most of your career fair experience.

Make a plan before you get to the fair

I

n a world where it can feel as though we are sending resumés into a digital abyss, interacting with an actual human being can make all the difference.

A career fair can be an access point for excellent career information, providing a unique opportunity to interact directly with potential employers.

By developing a comprehensive approach to a career fair, these inperson interactions can have lasting impressions on prospective employers.

The U of M hosts a career fair every January and this year you can attend on Tuesday, Jan. 15 from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. and Wednesday, Jan. 16 from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on the second floor of UMSU University Centre.

It is tempting to just wander into the career fair and mosey around collecting free pens. Unfortunately, this is not the best strategy for a meaningful interaction at a career fair.

Two steps will lead to a more meaningful experience. First, comb through the published list of attendees in advance, checking each of their websites to determine which are of interest to you. Then list your favourites so you can be sure to hit their booths.

Research, research, research

Once you identify your favourite companies, research them.

The career fair is an excellent learning opportunity, but the internet is also packed with information on the companies who attend.

By becoming knowledgeable about your favourite organizations in advance, you will appear intelligent, motivated and interested in the company when speaking to its representatives.

Career fairs are professional events, so dress as you would for a job interview in your field Prepare insightful questions

As you research, begin to draft questions for each employer. Do not waste your time asking questions easily answered through a simple Google search.

Career fairs are about more than telling employers what you have to offer. Take time to listen and learn.

Prepare questions for prospective employers about what can be done while you are still in the midst of your studies to best position yourself to get the experience required for a job you desire.

One of the best questions you can ask a hiring manager is “What do you look for in a prime candidate?”

By determining the expertise, education and previous experience they

are seeking, you can make a plan to become their best applicant.

Prepare your personal introduction

It is common for employers to ask you about yourself when you visit their booth.

You should have a short introduction prepared which includes your name, education, a brief explanation of your experience or skills and the type of work you are looking for now or when you graduate.

Tailor this information for each employer, highlighting the skills you know they want based on your research. You might even explicitly explain what attracts you to this company and makes you feel you are a great fit.

Practice out loud a few times so you feel confident and professional when you begin introducing yourself at the fair.

Dress like you would for a job interview

Career fairs are professional events, so dress as you would for a job interview in your field. A good rule of thumb is to dress slightly more professionally than would be expected if you were employed at the companies

you are interested in.

If you are unsure, business casual or business attire is usually a safe bet.

If you have a locker to stash your coat and backpack in, use it. You will look much more polished and put together if you are not lugging around distracting baggage.

Bring your resumé

If you are looking for work, bring copies of your resumé along. Some employers will direct you to apply online to a specific job posting, but a more generic document can be used to help employers remember you and get in touch with you after the fair.

If your conversation provides insight into improvements for your application, make sure to get the contact information of the employer and send a follow-up email within a couple days with an updated and tailored resumé and cover letter.

More effort, more reward

Ultimately, a career fair is what you make of it. By taking the time to plan your visit, you set yourself up for success.

Career fairs are great ways to get jobs, but they are also a chance to learn about the world of work and prepare for your future.

Manitoba was outpaced through 40 minutes, and a third period comeback bid fell short in a 3-2 defeat at home by the Pandas.

Alberta won foot races and harassed the Bisons on the forecheck, with an especially potent penalty killing performance pushing Manitoba back into its own zone.

Alanna Sharman made her season debut for the herd. The senior had been out since the preseason after suffering a lower-body injury.

he U of M women’s volleyball team returned to the court and welcomed 2019 with a spilt against the Thompson Rivers University Wolfpack.

Friday

The Bisons kicked off the series with a 3-1 loss to the Wolfpack Friday at the Investors Group Athletic Centre.

Olga Savenchuk led the visitors with 25 kills, while Kearley Abbott returned to the Bisons lineup and slammed down a team-high 11 kills.

Cassie Bujan kept balls alive for the herd and came up with a game-high

20 digs.

Kendra Finch and Savenchuk powered down two kills each early in the first set, and Savenchuk block lead to a 7-3 lead for the Wolfpack.

The visitors did not look back, as Savenchuk connected on three more kills to take her squad to a 1-0 lead in the match.

Kearley and Josie Abbott powered Manitoba to a second set victory, combining for seven kills.

The Bisons dominated, and the set was capped off with a Kelsey Jordan block.

Errors plagued the home team in the third set.

Manitoba climbed to a 10-5 lead before the Wolfpack strung together eight straight points.

Five of the points on the visitors’ scoring run came off attack errors by the Bisons. Manitoba committed 13 attacking errors within the set and the visitors took advantage to win the tightly contested third set 29-27.

Savenchuk was dominant in the fourth frame and hit down nine kills.

Kearley Abbott pounded down four kills in the set to help Manitoba keep pace with the Wolfpack.

However, Savenchuk and Thompson Rivers edged the Bisons 30-28 to take the set and the game.

Saturday

The Bisons came back with a vengeance to beat the Wolfpack 3-1 Saturday.

Kearley Abbott powered the Bisons offence with a game-high 19 kills, while Bujan kept multiple points alive with 19 digs. Savenchuk led the visitors again with 17 kills in the match.

This was Kearley Abbott’s first weekend back from injury.

“It felt really good to get back on the court,” said Abbott. “Obviously, our team had to make adjustments throughout the first term and they did a good job and so it was nice to just get back on the court and get a

win this weekend.”

Abbott said her team was the reason she was able to slam down so many kills in the match.

“Our middles did a really good job of bringing one blocker with them,

or Bisons forward Alanna Sharman, the series against the University of Alberta this weekend meant a little bit more than the points in the standings.

The Winnipeg native was sidelined with a lower-body injury for the first 16 games of the season. Sharman was hurt in a pre-season collision.

After getting in on some exhibition action during the holiday break, she made her regular season debut for the brown and gold Friday.

“The first shift in the exhibition game was pretty nerve-wracking,” Sharman said.

“But after that, it’s fun. It’s hockey right? So I just got back into it and felt pretty comfortable.”

However, coming in against the top team in Canada West did not faze the senior.

“They’re obviously a really good team — being first — but I’ve spent many years battling against them, I know how to play them pretty well,” Sharman said.

“We’re ready, we had a week of practice, we’re rested — I’m rested playing her tenacious, high-pressure — and ready to go.” style.

From there the wait was on until she got the OK from doctors to rejoin the team.

“I wasn’t medically cleared until December came around,” she said.

“I was ready to go in December,

but we only played two games in December so it was after that.”

Sharman’s previous experience with the same injury helped her in the healing process, especially to keep from coming back too soon. She

said she “knew how long the recovery would be” and took solace in the fact she would be good to go in the second half.

Being sidelined with her injury gave Sharman a good perspective on how the season has gone for the Bisons.

“It’s been a pretty good year so far.

We’ve only lost a few games, we’ve battled and competed pretty well,” she said.

“All the new players that came in are fitting really well with our team and a couple players [who] didn’t get to play last year have stepped up and are doing a really good job.”

The injury also gave Sharman time to focus more on school. She is currently working on a commerce degree, majoring in marketing.

“I planned out my schedule pretty well that I only have to take three [courses],” Sharman said.

When her final season comes to a close in a few months, she will no longer have to meet the three course minimum per term. This will allow Sharman to finish the final two courses of her degree and prepare for the next phase of her education.

“Next year I’m actually applying for my master of science in marketing,” she said.

manda Wong loves the game of soccer and has been playing since she was four years old. Her love for the game runs deep and even two ACL tears on the same leg could not stop her from playing.

Wong tore her ACL in the first game of her second season at the University of Manitoba, but this did not stop her from fighting to return to the pitch.

“I knew how much work I was going to have to put in,” said Wong of her recovery. “I love soccer so much that I wanted to do it and I wanted to go through the work.”

“There were people telling me ‘This is your second time, maybe you should stop soccer’ — but I was not prepared to do that,” she said.

The 22-year-old suffered the same injury when she was 13. The pain was familiar when she fell injured in her Bisons uniform.

“As soon as it happened I kind of knew what it was,” said Wong.

“Obviously I didn’t want to admit it to myself at the moment because I was devastated.”

Wong did not go through the long ACL recovery alone.

Teammate Bruna Mavignier suffered the same injury that season.

“We kind of rehabbed a bunch together and made a really strong connection from that,” said Wong.

Wong’s Bisons career ended in 2018, and she was one of the herd’s top players.

She scored two goals and tallied three assists throughout 15 games in her final season.

For this, Wong was named a Canada West second team all-star for 2018 — the second time of her career. The first came in 2014.

“It was cool being on it twice for sure,” said Wong.

“That’s some recognition for my hard work and stuff, and obviously it’s very much appreciated.”

Wong is just the second player in Bisons soccer history to be named a Canada West all-star in multiple seasons.

The other is Canadian National Team standout Desiree Scott, who was given the honour four times in her Bisons career.

“She really proves that playing at the U of M doesn’t mean you can’t make it to the national team,” Wong said.

“So I think that’s an inspiration, not just for us who play at the U of M, but also for so many little girls wanting to get to that level one day.”

Wong’s own desire to represent Canada weighed heavily on her decision between playing in the NCAA or at the U of M. “I was kind of told if I was look-

ing at national teams then I should go to the States,” said Wong.

“But in the end, I decided that staying here was best for me and I wanted to focus on my schooling and education because I figured that was where my future was going to be, rather than soccer.”

“I think the education I would get here [at U of M] would be a little bit better and staying at home with family and stuff is always nice,” said Wong.

Wong is graduating with a major in genetics this spring and said she is hoping to pursue a career in medicine.

She is focused on her schooling but will always play soccer for fun.

“I’ll still play women’s league or

coed league,” said Wong. “I’m not looking really to try pro or anything, I kind of want to move on with my career, not in soccer.”

Looking back at her four years of playing at the U of M, Wong said she has two moments that will stick with her forever.

She said she will always remember the first game of Nationals hosted at the U of M indoor soccer complex in 2017.

“Being captain, I got to hold the Manitoba sign as we walked out,” said Wong.

“The indoor complex at the U of M was just packed with people and we were the last team to walk out, and everyone was cheering for us.

It was amazing to have all those people there cheering for us and supporting us.”

Wong said the 1-0 playoff win over Calgary in 2016 is one game that will stay with her.

Calgary was the No. 1 seed and Manitoba just got into the playoffs as the No. 6 seed that season.

“We just played a really smart game, we wasted our time when we needed to, we slowed the game down when we needed to,” said Wong.

“Calgary was coming at us gunsa-blazing […] We were just giving it our all.”

The Bisons men’s hockey team started 2019 in Edmonton to take on the defending national champion University of Alberta Golden Bears.

Manitoba dropped game one, 4-1, and nearly came from behind in game two but lost in overtime 5-4.

In the opener, with Alberta already ahead 2-0, Jonah Wasylak had the lone goal for the herd. His second-period marker was followed by two Alberta goals in the third for the 4-1 finish.

Game two of the weekend was tense for both sides.

Manitoba fought back from two separate two-goal deficits to force overtime. Down 2-0, Zach Franko and Wasylak tied the game, and then down 4-2, Jeremy Leipsic and Adam Henry brought the herd even.

Luke Philp scored the OT winner for Alberta.

Manitoba picked up a single point on the weekend to move ahead of the University of Regina Cougars, who now sit alone in last with seven points.

Women’s basketball could not stop Pandas

The Bisons dropped game one 87-67. Claire Harvey led the way for Manitoba with 18 points, while Addison Martin came off the bench for 13 points of her own.

Manitoba came out swinging in game two, leading 38-36 at the half. From there Alberta took over, edged out the herd with a 16-14 third quarter, then dropped 32 to take the game 84-72.

Nicole Konieczny, Taylor Randall and Harvey had 16 points each in the loss, Emma Thompson had 15 and Keziah Brothers had seven. The only bench player to score was Tianna Mighty with two points.

The Bisons now sit 11th in the conference at 5-7 on the season

Well-rested men’s basketball swept

Down 34-30 at the half in game one, Manitoba looked like it could take over. Instead, Alberta stretched the lead with a 27-20 third quarter and held on for the 77-75 win. Rashawn Browne had a team-high 22 points for the Bisons in the loss.

Manitoba was outmatched in game two, unable to crack 20 points in any quarter as Alberta cruised to a monster 98-55 win.

Five Golden Bears players hit double digits in the game, while only James Wagner, Browne and Malik Irwin could do so for Manitoba.

With the losses, Manitoba drops to 3-9 and sits 14th in the conference.
