Asked whether UMSU had taken a stance on a foreign policy issue in recent history, president Jakob Sanderson noted the uniqueness of the motion.

Sanderson expressed doubt that anything concrete would come by way of the motion, saying that the powers that be would not be interested in hearing from UMSU on this topic.

“I don’t think that our foreign affairs minister needs to hear from a student union in Winnipeg that they should de-escalate the Middle East,” he said.

The motion was voted on by secret ballot and passed, becoming the official position of UMSU on conflict between Iran and the United States.

he Conservative Party of Canada is in shambles.

It’s lost the last two Canadian elections, despite having run with an incumbent prime minister of nearly a decade in 2015 and facing a politicallydamaged Justin Trudeau in 2019.

But what comes out of the rubble of the current Conservative party may be far different from years passed.

Since the current leader of the Conservative party, Andrew Scheer, stepped down in December, questions over the future direction of the

party have come to the forefront.

It’s obvious that the party is divided, and divided along the lines of two separate and very different ideologies. There are the social conservatives of years passed — represented by figures like Stephen Harper and Peter MacKay — and a new stream of conservatives, specifically an overtly far-right populist stream of conservative demagogues represented by candidates like Maxime Bernier and Jean Charest.

There are many sides to this issue as we work toward creating less landfill waste. There is the issue of businesses and how they should be moving toward packaging that is more friendly to the environment by avoiding single-use plastics.

Canada’s proposed ban on singleuse plastics is a start, but large companies — like coffee companies who contribute millions of cups to landfills like Winnipeg’s everyday — must also come up with company-wide solutions to adapt sustainably.

But above all, Winnipeg must do everything within its power to confront these uncomfortable realities head-on and pull its own weight, no matter the initial cost. The future of our planet depends on it.

e’re right in the middle of the 20th annual Master Playwright Festival. Started in 2001, the festival was created to allow contributions from professional and up-and-coming production companies in a citywide theatre festival honouring famous playwrights.

This year’s festival features the works of William Shakespeare.

C ol lo qu i a l ly c a l le d “ShakespeareFest,” performances range from purist stagings of the Bard’s plays and adaptations of his works to new plays based around Shakespeare’s life or his well-known characters.

ShakespeareFest also marks the final edition of the festival organized by the Royal Manitoba Theatre Centre (Royal MTC).

The following three works were chosen for their connec-

tion to the U of M, their connection to the Royal MTC as well as a unique Winnipeg connection.

There’s a review of the Royal MTC’s 1960s-set production of the Bard’s classic comedy As You Like It and a preview of the U of M theatre program’s 1980s-set production of Macbeth. Last is a preview of Shakespeare’s Will — a powerfully feminist play focusing on Shakespeare’s wife, Anne Hathaway, who is played by Deborah Patterson — written by Winnipeg-born and Canadian award-winning playwright Vern Thiessen.

An entire list of plays for this year’s festival can be found on the Royal MTC’s website royalmtc. ca. The festival runs until Feb. 9.

L

iving in Winnipeg is not always easy, but it’s always something. Cold enough to crack bones and hot enough to melt pavement, Winnipeg is a city with a troubled spirit, a place of great social inequity and a strange sense of comradery. That our unofficial anthem hangs on the phrase “I hate Winnipeg” says a lot about our skewed sense of hometown pride.

Thomas Steur, just 17, has been playing the Winnipeg circuit for a couple years now — busking, hosting open mics and playing a set at September’s climate strike in a city known for its reliance on cars and an increasingly unaffordable public transit system.

It’s this city and its ambiguities that motivated Steur’s debut EP as Trampy Trails, December’s Beneath These Trees. The seventrack, entirely acoustic collection is a delicate portrait of one person’s Winnipeg, joining a long legacy of music inspired by the city and its people.

“I think it’s kind of emblematic of most artists from Winnipeg,” Steur said, “it’s like, well, ‘What do you write about? What have you always known about?’ Winnipeg.”

The Winnipeg that Steur has always known is a complex place, and Beneath These Trees is full of characters from the North End that raised him — downtown weekend

warriors, failed songwriters and a man with a tattered backpack making a bedroom of a bus shack.

These were the songs he felt proudest of, the songs that were best loved by those around him.

However, there are plenty more songs to be made and plenty more still that may never be heard.

“It’s like, well, ‘What do you write about?

What have you always known about?’ Winnipeg” — Thomas Steur, musician “I have a running collection of notes on my phone, and — I counted, I actually have 272 notes in my phone — most of them are just lyrics I thought of on the spot,” Steur said.

“Some of them will never be used for a song probably, but I just kind of let them sit there. And then eventually if I get an idea, I’ll try and use one of the lyrics and piece it together.”

Though only writing songs in earnest for the past two years, Steur

says he’s been playing music for nearly as long as he can remember.

“I started when I was about three or four, my parents got me started in piano lessons,” he said. “When I was four, I got my first guitar, but my fingers were too small for it. I didn’t start playing it until I was 12 or 13.”

Steur took to the guitar more than the piano, and at the age of 15 he was busking regularly. It was only more recently that he decided to set his sights on bigger things.

“It’s just been recently that I’ve thought like, heck, I’m going to go for it and try and actually get out there,” he said.

“I had been kind of thinking about trying to find ways to record but, of course, since I’m not really a big artist yet, I don’t have much of a budget.”

It was his performance at the Sept. 27 climate strike that changed things. There he met David Dobbs, a member of local band Vampires, who offered him a free recording session — no budget needed.

And so Beneath These Trees was born.

“It was a pretty basic process — it’s just acoustic guitar and voice, it felt a lot like performing, really,” Steur said.

The goal eventually, according to Steur, is to move beyond the simple acoustic folk of Beneath These Trees and into something more robust, something that pushes his songwriting beyond just guitar and voice.

“I’m always writing songs — I’m thinking about producing an album. I want to make something that’s fully produced, that has more instruments,” he said. “The current idea is to just record it at home and have someone master it for me.”

Steur cites Neil Young, Bob Dylan, Joni Mitchell and Tom Petty as inspirations for his writing and a goal of where he’d like to take Trampy Trails.

It’s perhaps not the most surprising or subversive list of influences, but understandably so — there are whispers of each in Steur’s working-class stories of the everyday, his devotion to the realities of where he calls home.

There’s certainly the feeling that Steur is only just beginning.

That this promising EP — in all its homespun simplicity — is simply a portrait of an artist in motion, growing toward something bigger.

Wherever he goes next, it’s unlikely that Winnipeg will ever fully leave his music. In some way, it’ll probably always be there — all that hot and cold, all the comfort and disbelief, the unrelenting summer sun and the long shadows cast beneath the trees.

Though women playing any role in Shakespeare comes as a “radical” change to original productions, the U of M theatre program’s production had a gender-neutral casting call.

Kerr wanted to make a distinction between gender-blind and genderconscious casting.

“When we were auditioning, we hadn’t decided that Macbeth would be played by a male or female, or either, or neither,” he said, “but we wanted to see who came out and what they did. It turns out that we went with the appropriate gender for those characters, but a lot of the thanes [royal officials] are a mix of different people.”

However, for Kerr, the caliber of acting outweighed any intention of gender-specific casting, rewarding effort in craft over audience supposition.

“In the end, you go with who you think is the best for the role,” he said.

Written by Winnipeg-born playwright Vern Thiessen and directed

by Eric Blais, this one-woman show is both the unheard story of a unique woman and a cathartic examination of a relationship central to some of the English language’s most vital pieces of literature.

Set after William Shakespeare’s funeral, the play focuses on Anne Hathaway — Shakespeare’s wife — and her version of the story of their marriage and Shakespeare’s life in a series of flashbacks.

Deborah Patterson stars as Hathaway. As a founding member of Winnipeg’s own Shakespearean theatre company Shakespeare in the Ruins, Patterson has been analyzing Shakespeare most of her life — even studying with Neil Freeman, who is a master of Shakespeare’s folio texts.

Patterson was attracted to the part because she feels Hathaway is such an enigma in the story we know of Shakespeare’s life.

“I mean, the little that we know of her — she was older than [William Shakespeare], she had three kids, one set of twins, with him. They lived separate lives for most of their married life, but he returned to live with her at the end of his life. I find all of that really interesting.”

The other reason Patterson was so

fascinated by Hathaway is because historians are still piecing together women’s stories throughout history.

“Women’s stories from that time don’t often get told,” she said.

“We decide [as a culture] what is important and we preserve what we think is important, and women’s stories weren’t seen to be important. But obviously [women] were doing things and the things they were doing had importance to them.”

Patterson was fascinated by exploring what Hathaway’s life was like and how it adds value to Shakespeare’s own story as well as women’s stories.

“Who was she?” she said, “What was she doing? What was she like?

How did she fill her days? All these questions I think have value, have importance.”

As for the fact that this year’s Master Playwright Festival stars Shakespeare’s works — an immortal playwright who needs no introduction, who lives on in high school and university classrooms with students dissecting the dense prose and iambic pentameter of his plays — Patterson believes the humanity of Shakespeare’s writing is what keeps us coming back.

“I think Shakespeare’s genius is in describing core human experiences that, on some level, are universal,” she said.

“Falling in love, fearing death, offering forgiveness, wanting revenge: all these things are core human experiences and he just illuminates them and describes them so beautifully and elevates them.

“By doing his plays we ennoble those ideas, we ennoble each other through that perfect embodiment of those universal truths of the human condition.”

“Game two really showed our character as a team, which I believe will just become stronger as all of us gain more experience in future years,” she said.

“We never gave up in game two which I think is huge, especially for a young team.”

With six games left on the schedule and a maximum of 18 points up for grabs, the herd is in tight to make a playoff push.

Currently nine points behind the Mount Royal University Cougars for the final playoff spot, the U of M must face three of the top four teams to close the year.

Next up for the Bisons is a trip to face the University of Regina Cougars Jan. 24 and 25. Game one is 7 p.m. CST and game two is 3 p.m. CST.
