Should the university fill the vacancy again, Mckay said the position should be changed from the ground up.

“The U of M needs to focus on Indigenous resurgence,” she said.

“Because I feel like if they have something like that, like Ryerson, like [the University of Victoria], it’s

Mckay added that when Indigenous students met with U of M president David Barnard and the presidential executive team in November, they emphasized the importance of Indigenous students being actively involved in the hiring process of administrative positions involving Indigenous engagement on campus.

Theis said for the university to

move forward with the process of replacing Lavallée, it needs to “willingly hire someone who’s going to fight for the students, even if [that’s what] some of the higher-ups aren’t accustomed to.”

“Someone who’s going to be willing to disrupt the system,” said Mckay.

“The university has to talk about race, has to talk about anti-Indigenous racism, has to talk about denying us the resources to be able to revitalize our languages, about reallocating resources, and the university has to get comfortable [talking about it], just like every individual does, just like all of society does,” Theis said.

“Or else nothing will ever change.”

s the U of M re-opens for a new year the door closes on 2018 — and with it, we inevitably reminisce on a year filled with progress, protest and struggle.

In the spirit of looking back, here is a rundown of some of the biggest stories on campus this past year.

1. U of M president apologizes to students amidst a windfall of sexual violence complaints against faculty

On the first day of the 2018-19 school year, U of M president David Barnard held a media conference and apologized to students affected by sexual violence on campus.

The apology, and ensuing confirmation that there were five open investigations against faculty, came after a slew of sexual violence complaints against U of M faculty, and shortly before another would come to light.

Days later, police confirmed former jazz professor Steve Kirby had been arrested on charges of sexual assault.

Kirby left the university in June 2017 after being on leave for six months, but reports claim the U of M was approached with complaints regarding the well-known instructor as early as 2012.

The program rolled out in September 2016 following two 2014 referendums where UMSU members and University of Manitoba Graduate Students’ Association members both voted in favour of the mandatory pass for full-time students.

UMSU’s requests at the bargaining table will include a wider range of opt-out eligibility for students and additional routes and buses throughout the city.

Sanderson has said Winnipeg Transit told UMSU there would be more buses made available to match the influx of student riders in the original negotiations but did not hold up its end of the bargain.

According to the present contract, there is a roll-out option should negotiations not be completed in time that would allow the current contract to extend for another year.

5. Students vote to remain in Canadian Federation of Students

Both undergraduate and graduate students were hit with a 6.6 per cent — the maximum percentage allowable — increase to tuition fees in September.

There had been a cap on tuition fee increases in place since 2012, but it was lifted after the provincial government passed Bill 31 in November 2017.

At the time, provost and vicepresident academic Janice Ristock referred to the millions distributed annually by the university to students through bursaries and scholarships as a method taken by the U of M to keep education affordable.

The provincial government also slashed funding for the extended education grant program Access and the research funding program Research Manitoba.

International students felt the brunt of the hikes and slashes in 2018.

It was announced in March that along with the tuition increase, Manitoba would become the first province in Western Canada to scrap its universal healthcare program for international students.

A handful of students protested the tuition hikes — along with cuts to international student healthcare — by staging a sit-in in Barnard’s office in April, shortly after they were first announced.

Members of the U of M’s Revolutionary Student Movement (RSM) chapter entered the office and refused to leave.

The RSM’s demands included the reversal of the tuition fee increase and that the provincial government no longer be “complicit” in healthcare cuts.

Stella’s unionization raises important questions Is the union a countervailing force or the gold in gilded capitalism?

T

he jubilation felt by the workers at Stella’s at the Sherbrook and Osborne locations after winning their unionization battles was surely overwhelming.

On Dec. 20, the Stella’s on Osborne voted to unionize and a day later the Stella’s on Sherbrook joined them. The battle for a union was spurred after several Stella’s workers came forward with allegations of sexual harassment and sexual assault by senior management. Furthermore, reports from workers painted a generally toxic workplace established by management.

The allegations against Stella’s were aired on social media where they reached thousands of patrons and Winnipeggers via the @notmystellas Instagram account. As a result, many former patrons began a boycott campaign — despite the founders of @notmystellas encouraging people to direct their concerns to head office staff. The underlying goal of the disjointed boycott was to impose economic devastation on Stella’s until they met the modest demands of the workers who posted on @notmystellas.

While Stella’s did work to hire a human resources company, fired both the regional manager and vice-president and developed new training for

the staff, it remained unlikely Stella’s would experience restored customer levels for the foreseeable future.

Then, like the cavalry arriving in the nick of time, the workers organized.

As more Stella’s locations continue to organize and join the union, it should be the priority of the collective to force all management out of their seats of power. The only clear path to achieving this is to develop a worker’s co-operative. The union collective would need to agree to buy ownership of the chain.

A worker’s co-operative would entirely dismantle the previous managerial dictators — an infinitesimal rectification in comparison to the crime — and bring democracy to the workplace. Stella’s workers would not vote to install the gross sexual violence they endured under the dictatorship of capital.

The union is an important first for the Stella’s workers. It empowers them to finally begin to approach management with bargaining clout.

But, with the return of profits and support by customers repulsed by Stella’s treatment of its workers, the ownership becomes nearly impossible to dislodge.

Keep the barricade up, keep them weak, the revolution is almost done.

Pool the resources necessary and tear down Stella’s tyrants and replace them with a workplace democracy.

“Hellboy” (2019) doomed to wander the uncanny valley?

ven before the Hellboy reboot drops later this year, it is condemned to the deepest recesses of audience hellfire by its very design.

On Dec. 19, a teaser for the new Hellboy trailer launched on the popular game review website IGN. Since then, the publishing studio Lionsgate has posted the trailer to its YouTube page. A quick peruse of the comment section yields several fans reminiscing about Ron Perlman’s 2004 portrayal of Hellboy and ranting in discontent about the reboot.

The film should have been met with resounding excitement. It has

all the hallmarks of a successful superhero movie. The trailer depicts whimsical humour, breathtaking visuals and relentless action all being played out with the nostalgia-inducing Billy Idol’s 1981 “Mony Mony” as the trailer’s theme music.

It is possible the backlash originates from transforming Hellboy from a dark hero who struggles to find his purpose, his true identity and his place within society into an abomination of a Deadpool copycat.

What was a banner year for some U of M Bisons programs was less than stellar for others. No matter which side a particular program fell on, it bears reviewing what the big storylines were and what Bisons fans can expect in 2019.

ell ahead of any medal-round action, Canada’s World Juniors team has already had a tough test.

For the second year in a row, the best Canadian players — almost all of whom are NHL draft picks — lost to a ragtag group of Canadian university players. The U Sports all-star team downed the Canadian squad 2-1 in a three-game series in Victoria.

Team Canada began the threegame set with a narrow 3-2 shootout win on Dec. 12.

From there, the U Sports club took over with back-to-back five-goal outings to take the series.

In game two, MacKenzie Entwistle got Canada ahead less than five minutes into the contest.

Nikolas Brouillard evened the score in the first and Riley Sheen gave U Sports a 2-1 lead at 4:47 of the second.

Morgan Frost and Owen Tippett scored late in the second to give Canada a 3-2 lead, but U Sports

scored three unanswered to take the game 5-3.

Game three was all U Sports.

The university club had a 2-0 lead heading into the second period when Tippett scored the lone Canadian goal.

Collin Shirley, Kris Bennett and Christopher Clapperton all scored in

the second, leading U Sports to a 5-1 win to take the series.

Clapperton — a University of New Brunswick forward — led the university squad with two goals and three assists in the series.

The play of the U Sports team drew high praise from Hunter, who described the team as comparable to a “good” American Hockey League

team.

Team Canada captain Maxime Comtois also had good things to say of his opponents.

“I saw it last year. That’s a really good team out there,” he said.

“We obviously still have a lot of work to do. We still have to figure out our chemistry. It’s a wake-up call

for us. This series will help us clean up our game.”

Comtois is the lone returnee from Canada’s gold-medal-winning squad from the 2018 World Junior Championship in Buffalo.

That same Team Canada was swept in its pre-tournament tune-up series against the U Sports all-stars in St. Catharines, Ont. U Sports shut out Team Canada 3-0 in game one and edged the juniors 4-3 in game two in 2017.

This season’s U Sports team featured many familiar faces for Bisons fans.

Sheen, Dylan Busenius, Cain Franson and Jordan Papirny of the University of Calgary Dinos were among the Canada West contingent.

The defending national champion University of Alberta Golden Bears was also well represented. Defender Jason Fram, along with forwards Cole Sanford and Luke Philp, donned U Sports jerseys.

Other Canada West representatives included Jerret Smith of the UBC Thunderbirds and Carson Stadnyk, Shirley and Kohl Bauml of the University of Saskatchewan Huskies.

For the second season in a row, no Bisons made the U Sports all-star team. The last Bisons player to make the team was Jordan DePape in 2016.

This would have been Vesalainen’s third World Juniors but he decided it was best for him to keep playing for Jokerit in the KHL, where he was recently named the league’s rookie of the week.

The Jets have representatives playing for the USA, Finland and Sweden.

Winnipeg selected defenceman Dylan Samberg 43rd overall in the 2017 NHL Entry Draft.

However, while Samberg does not put up a lot of points, he has a positive plus/minus in the NCAA.

Santeri Virtanen (Finland)

Virtanen has played 29 games in the Finnish Elite League this year and has recorded seven points — five goals, two assists.

David Gustafsson (Sweden)

Winnipeg selected the Swedish centre in the second round — 60th overall — of the 2018 NHL Entry Draft. Gustafsson was second in scoring for Sweden in the 2018 IIHF World U18 Championships, recording seven points and winning bronze.

The two-way centre plays in the

Swedish Hockey League for HV71 Jonkoping. The 18-year-old put up 12 points in 45 games in the 2017-18 season and tallied three assists in 13 games this season before leaving for the World Juniors.

Fan outlook

All three prospects will have medal hopes at this year’s tournament, but most Jets fans will be okay with them only winning silver or bronze.

Most fans will want to see team Canada win back-to-back gold for the first time since winning five straight gold medals from 2005 to 2009.

Canada has no Jets prospects but Winnipeg native Cody Glass is playing top-line minutes for the red and white.

Glass has recorded 54 points — 12 goals, 42 assists — in 26 games for the Portland Winterhawks in the WHL this season and will look to use his passing abilities to lead Canada to gold.
