During his report, UMSU VP external Owen Black spoke about UMSU’s planned flexible parking pass system in particular.

“Parking services is planning to have some form of flexible parking in place for next September,” he said.

“At this point, it’s most likely looking like a Monday-WednesdayFriday pass and a Tuesday-Thursday pass so that students could stack their classes, say, if you only take MondayWednesday-Friday classes.”

Black said he hoped the flexible pass could be expanded over the next several years to meet students’ needs — he referred to students from the Asper School of Business who do not have classes on Fridays as an example.

Annual parking passes for both commuter students and resident students currently cost $592 for the Fort Garry campus. Student parking permits are valid from Sept. 1 to April 30 of each year.

U of M parking manager Cameron Neufeld “did inform me that there’s over 1,000 students currently on the waiting list for parking, which is a huge number,” Black said.

UMSU board votes against affirming membership

Vote marks first step toward defederation MALAK ABAS, STAFF

he UMSU board of directors voted against affirming membership in the Canadian Federation of Students at an emergency meeting Nov. 29.

Under new bylaws passed in the spring, the board must hold a vote every two years to affirm membership in outside organizations.

At Thursday’s meeting, two members voted to affirm, one abstained and all others voted against.

The vote was completed through a secret ballot process.

The decision by the board not to support continued membership in the national organization — which has more than 60 member locals across the country — begins a process toward a referendum asking UMSU membership whether it wishes to defederate.

In a non-binding plebescite held just eight months ago, students voted 64.6 per cent vote in favour of continued membership.

UMSU president Jakob Sanderson recommended UMSU leave the federation.

“I’m not saying the Canadian

Federation of Students does not provide value [...] but I don’t think that it provides the requisite value of student money when you look at, comparably, what other organizations provide,” he said.

Speakers at the meeting included several members of the UMSU board, former members of the UMSU board and several members of the provincial level of the Canadian Federation of Students.

Universit y of Manitoba Indigenous Students Association (UMISA) co-president Alannah Mckay urged voters to affirm membership, calling the relationship between the provincial level of federation and UMISA “healthy [and] reciprocal.”

She said the federation “gives black, Indigenous, people of colour voices.”

The vote to begin the defederation process comes after an official recommendation from the executive council at the board’s Nov. 22 meeting.

Thursday’s meeting included a vote to affirm membership in the Undergraduates of Canadian Research-Intensive Universities (UCRU), which passed with an overwhelming majority.

Sanderson recommended the board affirm membership before the vote.

The vote does not guarantee a referendum will take place.

The next step in the process is collecting signatures from students in support of the referendum.

For the petition to be valid for review, 15 per cent of the student body must sign, or approximately 3,400 students.

Sanderson previously said the earliest feasible date for a referendum would be fall 2019.

Holiday hamper program in high demand UMSU sees nearly double the applications from last year SHAUNA MATTHEWS, STAFF

The holiday season is in full swing, and UMSU has provided several ways for the U of M community to give back.

UMSU’s holiday hamper program, which is going into its 21st year of operations, has received over 180 hamper applications this year — almost double last year’s 100 requests.

UMSU VP advocacy Sarah Bonner-Proulx said the program helps to alleviate some of the financial stress associated with the holiday season for students and their families.

“As many of us know, the cost associated with being a student isn’t cheap,” Bonner-Proulx said.

“And for many students, especially during the holiday season, the financial burden and stress becomes even more taxing.”

Sustainability office plans for future

he U of M office of sustainability heard from the campus community at a discussion session held at the Fort Garry campus Nov. 29.

As the U of M prepares to shape its sustainability strategy for the years 2019-2024, the workshop was held as an avenue for students, staff and the campus community to contribute and discuss the future of campus environmental sustainability efforts.

The 2019-2024 sustainability strategy will build on the 2016-2018 strategy.

The 2016-2018 strategy focused on six main areas: resource conservation and efficiency, transportation and accessibility, ecology and environment, land use, climate and campus life.

he Carolina Hurricanes began the regular season with a new way to celebrate a win at home.

Rather than the traditional stick lift at centre ice, they tried something else to interact with the fans. Dubbed the “storm surge,” players begin by standing at one end of the ice and then proceed to skate across to the other end and crash into the boards, much to the delight of some of the Hurricanes’ faithful fans posted up there that stayed to celebrate.

It was a departure from tradition that was refreshing, an indication that the players wanted to express themselves in a new way.

This has created the impetus to look toward the Prairie ethos of the past for a new politics of the future.

Worker co-operatives are the greatest embodiment of the Prairie ethos. Not only do the workers in a co-operative find themselves as both the producer and the boss, they also fulfill the localism and mutual aid found in the spirit of the Prairies.

Worker co-operatives generate more income for their workers in the form of higher salaries and are more responsive to the needs of customers. Take for example the worker co-operative Produits Forestiers Petit Paris sawmill in Quebec. When faced with potential annihilation, the sawmill made major investments in new technologies that improved efficiency and transformed the mill into an environmentally-minded producer of lumber.

This was not what I expected entering politics, but I truly believed this treatment would stop following elections. It didn’t.

After taking office, my team and I did work I am proud of. But when fielding questions about our work, we seldom received any about logistics of issues.

Instead, we fielded questions regarding our competency and faced personal attacks from our membership.

There is nothing wrong with questioning the effectiveness of elected officials or criticizing decisions you may disagree with. This is a healthy and natural part of democratic politics. However, in my experience the

Why UMSU should leave the Canadian Federation of Students JAKOB SANDERSON

That’s also the amount UMSU members paid to the Canadian Federation of Students last year.

Yet for years UMSU has felt that it doesn’t receive value for that money.

Last week, our executive team recommended UMSU begin collecting signatures for a petition demanding a referendum to leave the Canadian Federation of Students, and several reasons were thrown out as to why.

The most frequently cited reason on social media has been the longstanding allegation that the Canadian Federation of Students meetings prove to be a hostile environment, particularly against UMSU and other locals which speak against the majority.

Many countered these claims, saying they are embellished, that UMSU is often responsible for much of this hostility or that executives should suck it up.

I am fully aware how little students care about this airing of grievances and want to speak instead to an issue all students can relate to — their money.

Specifically, I want to talk about why we aren’t getting proper value for money from the Canadian Federation

I grew incredibly frustrated with the federation, as it seemed intent on retaining membership through undemocratic bylaws rather than consultation and self-reflection.

Still, I felt compelled to support a unified student movement above all.

The differences compared to the Canadian Federation of Students were stark.

In each of these organizations, lobby weeks include all member locals (UMSU has not been asked to participate by the federation in the past six years) and advocacy documents are voted on and prepared by any willing member local with all being consulted.

As well, the mandate of each is to focus on issues directly relating to student priorities, while CFS has spent student money on a number of campaigns, such as pipeline protests, Boycott, Divestments and Sanctions of Israel and support for

labour unions, that may be in the interest of social justice, but are not an appropriate use of student funds.

As well, university administrators and political officials have made it clear to me that the Canadian Federation of Students is not wellrespected, as CASA and UCRU’s proposals are more heavily researched and more attainable.

With no increase in student fees UMSU could retain its membership in UCRU, allowing us to represent students in an organization prioritizing issues exclusive to U15 students, join CASA to give UMSU a place in a national student organization representing all demographics of students, instigate a new provincial lobbying coalition with CASA member Red River College and any CFSaffiliated school interested in joining, hire two full-time staff focused directly on advocacy issues and still have money left over to improve services for students and creating more spaces, resources and programming for black, Indigenous and people of colour (BIPOC) students.

It’s up to you.

If we collect signatures from 15 per cent of the student body, there will be a referendum on membership with the Canadian Federation of Students.

I look forward to the federation presenting its case as to why UMSU can’t get any better value elsewhere and my team looks forward to presenting the reasons we think you could get better value elsewhere.

It’s my job to inform students of where their money is going and to represent them based on what I believe is in their best interests.

Whatever students choose to do, I will fully support, but if you think students deserve a chance to vote, in a binding referendum when presented with both sides of the argument, I have a petition for you to sign.

Recent university graduate Holly Mackington was heard frantically trying to figure out how to operate the fax machine at her new office job on Monday.

Mackington, who recently turned 23, was asked to fax a document in the late morning of her first day by her new manager.

“I only have a vague idea of what a fax machine even does,” Mackington said.

“It’s kind of like a worse email, I think. I’m trying to remember if there’s an episode of The Office where they show someone sending a fax.”

Mackington said she tried looking for information about how to operate the machine online after she couldn’t figure it out on her own.

“I found some general info about fax machines, but it’s so hard to know. I mean, I thought ‘There’s no way a modern office would be using something that outdated,’ but they’re also using Microsoft

rt Holm, the multidisciplinary performance series, is returning for its third iteration Dec. 14 to 16 at the West End Cultural Centre.

The series, which “showcases professional artists in unconventional spaces,” is curated by Alexandra Elliott and Hilary Anne Crist, both Winnipeg-based dancers and choreographers.

Art Holm was started out of a need

for “a place where independent dance performers or performance artists in general can show their work,” Elliott said.

Typical dance performances need to meet a certain duration of time when performed in a traditional theatre setting, whereas Art Holm allows performers to have shorter dance pieces.

Regardless of where he goes following graduation, Spiring is aiming to remain in a classroom.

“Phys-ed and geography are my major and minor, but I’ll teach anything,” said Spiring.

So I’m really excited.”

“I think we were hitting .412 but Brandon was hitting .500, so we were right there, we just didn’t play any defence.”

The teams attacked heavily in the first set, but Elliott Viles palmed six kills to the floor to help Brandon win.

The teams continued to abandon defence and rely on the attack in the second set.

Brendan Warren made a huge block early in the set and put down three kills for Manitoba. The Bobcats attack was too much, and Baghdady killed five balls in the set, winning 25-20.

Manitoba struggled in the third and final set, hitting at .158 per cent.

Brandon’s attack remained strong, taking the final set 25-16.

Saturday

The Bobcats made quick work of the Bisons Saturday, winning 3-0 to sweep the match and the weekend series.

Brandon had stellar performances all over the court, but Mason Metcalf led the team with 12 kills.

Baghdady also smacked down 10 kills and served up five aces in the match.

Manitoba could not get much going, but Ben Carleton stood out for the home team. Carleton came up with four digs and four kills.

“I was really happy with the way Ben Carleton played,” said Bisons head coach Garth Pischke.

“He hasn’t been getting much time this year because he’s just a young kid, and he showed some signs of good things out there, things we need on the court.”

Manitoba put up a fight, but the Brandon offence was too much in the first set.

Metcalf continued to pound the ball in the second set where he connected on six of his 12 kills. Brandon had a hit percentage of .520, while Manitoba’s hitting percentage was in the negatives. The visitors steam rolled their way to a 25-8 second-set win.

Carleton flashed power in the third set. He smacked a ball off a Bobcats’ shoulder, which ricocheted all the way to the opposing wall of the gym.

The Bobcats offence was still too much for the herd however, as Baghdady served up four aces in one service turn to help the visitors to a 25-15 set three victory.

Kelsey Wog continues to strike gold

For Wog, the frequency of races during the conference championship took an adjustment, but the work paid off.

“The amount of racing has been really good for me because that’s what I struggled with a bit last year,” she said.

“So it’s nice to get as much practice in as possible before [the Canadian Swimming Trials] in April and the following season. I was really happy about winning four gold medals because it was the first time I’ve been able to achieve it.”

Prior to this was the Odlum Brown College Cup in Vancouver on Nov. 3 and 4, where Wog cleaned up. She took home five gold medals and four meet records at the event.

On day one she took gold in the 50- and 200-metre breaststroke and set new record times in each. Then, on day two she claimed gold in the 100-metre breaststroke, 200-metre

individual medley and 200-metre freestyle. She set new records in the medley and freestyle.

“The Odlum Brown Cup went well,” Wog said.

“It was a lot of racing in a short period of time, and I felt like [I] was able to manage the quick recovery piece between races and give each [event] my best effort.”

Wog began 2018 right with three golds during the College’s Cup Mountain back in February. The golds came in the 200-metre individual medley, the 100-metre backstroke and the 100-metre breaststroke.

She also brought home a pair of bronze medals at the College’s Cup in team events. The Bisons placed third in the 200-metre and 400metre medley relays.

After that Wog brought home two golds and a silver at the U Sports national championship in Toronto.

The third-year swimmer won the 50-metre and 100-metre breaststroke events.

The breaststroke is Wog’s specialty, with nine of her 14 golds won in breaststroke events.

This golden year has only been made sweeter for Wog. Along with her wins, the swimmer earned a spot with Team Canada at the Pan Pacific Championships in August.

Wearing the red and white, Wog placed fifth in the 200-metre breaststroke and sixth in the 200-metre individual medley.

She was also part of the fourthplace 4x100-metre medley relay finish

by Team Canada.

Next up in conference competition for the Winnipeg swimmer — and the rest of the Bisons swimming team — is the 2019 College’s Cup Mountain. The event will be held at the University of Calgary from Feb. 2 to 3.

From there the Bisons will head to Vancouver for the U Sports national swimming championship, from Feb. 21 to 23.
