UMSU votes against motion supporting BDS Sanderson calls Canadian Federation of Students motion “ill-considered” MALAK ABAS, STAFF

he UMSU executive spoke out and voted against a motion supporting the boycott, divestment and sanctions (BDS) movement and condemning the illegal occupation of Palestine by Israel according to international law during the Canadian Federation of Students annual general meeting Nov. 19 in Gatineau, Que. The motion, which passed after several amendments, also included support for Palestine-Solidarity organizing nationally and moved to “support locals in launching weapons divestment campaigns targeted towards their individual administrations.”

The Canadian Federation of Students is an organization representing over 500,000 students at 64 student unions across Canada.

UMSU president Jakob Sanderson called the motion “divisive” and “ill-considered.”

“My problem is not necessarily as much with the BDS movement, my problem is with this motion and with the idea of a student federation getting involved in this,” he said.

“So it’s sort of my view that a student union, especially a Canadian federation of students […] should be trying to focus on issues that will unite as many students as possible.

Abusaleh said the response to the motion by UMSU has made it more difficult to open up a discussion on the subject.

“The union going against the motion sort of decreases, or narrows, the discourse,” he said.

He added that UMSU should take a closer look at where it stands on the federation’s motion.

“The union should consider changing its position on it,” he said.

“They should consider how strongly they want to oppose the motion, and they should strongly consider whether they are against the motion because they’re going against [the movement], or because they’re unhappy with the way [the Canadian Federation of Students] mandated some of the things that they’ve mandated.”

Sanderson said he was concerned for students who may feel “othered” by the motion’s passing.

“I am troubled that the [Canadian Federation of Students] would come in and introduce a motion that quite clearly alienates many students that pay their membership fees to the Canadian Federation of Students,” he said.

“And when students have come forward and put that opinion to me, I definitely am sympathetic [to] that.”

That plebiscite saw students vote in overwhelming support of staying with the Canadian Federation of Students, with a 64.6 per cent vote in favour of continued membership.

According to Sanderson, six consecutive UMSU executive teams have considered separating from the federation.

He said the worry that students may see the failed plebiscite and ensuing talks of defederation as evidence their voices are not being heard is “a valid concern,” but added many of the issues those executives raised remain credible.

The current executive has spoken critically of the federation in the past.

In June, UMSU presented concerns with the federation after the semiannual general meeting held that same month.

Sanderson compared costs of other similar organizations, with the Canadian Federation of Students costing UMSU students $341,000, CASA costing $50,000 and UCRU being free of charge.

The federation has the largest number of member-student unions nationwide with 54. CASA has 22 and UCRU nine.

The federation is, however, the only organization that offers both advocacy and services. CASA and

UCRU only provide advocacy resources. It is also the only organization that has a clear mandate advocating for free education tuition.

Should the board vote to hold a referendum, a petition will be circulated to generate support. For the petition to be valid for review, 15 per cent of the student body must sign, or approximately 3,400 students.

While the emergency meeting will provide a decision on whether or not to affirm membership in the federation, Sanderson said this does not mean defederation is guaranteed.

“A board vote to leave the Canadian Federation of Students next week does not have us defederate from the Canadian Federation of Students,” he said. “This just gives us the chance to talk to students, to gather signatures from those that would like to leave the Canadian Federation of Students and demand a referendum.

“Ultimately, we will never leave the Canadian Federation of Students without a referendum of our entire student membership.”

The earliest feasible date for a referendum, according to Sanderson, would be fall 2019.

When Nagra was running with the UMSU For You slate in 2016, she spoke positively of the federation and said she’d “like to solve whatever issue CFS has with UMSU and hopefully move on and prosper together,” while admonishing prior UMSU executives

for their handling of issues with the federation.

Sanderson himself voted as a proxy against holding the plebiscite when it was first brought to UMSU council in November 2017.

“I didn’t think that the approach was one that was proper,” he said.

“I didn’t think it was an approach where we were giving students enough education,” he added.“I didn’t like the approach of the plebiscite.”

The federation and the student union has been in a tug-of-war for several years.

In September 2013, UMSU executives tore out all pages promoting the Canadian Federation of Students from the day timer agendas provided on campus.

Then-president Al Turnbull said the decision was a response to a deal that the federation had locked

UMSU into which forced the union to pay full price for the agendas, even after they had found a cheaper quote elsewhere.

Canadian Federation of Students internal co-ordinator Brent Farrington said the contract was only locked because production of agendas was already underway.

In January 2015, it was reported that UMSU was refusing to pay around $640,000 in student fees, which included fees owed to the federation as early as 2013.

Turnbull said the fees had not been paid because the federation had not responded to requests to give UMSU ownership of their website’s domain name.

The dispute was not resolved until July 2016, when UMSU agreed to pay the federation $993,562.18 in provincial and national fees.

The symposium, titled Our truths, our voices: Reclaiming the world through story, featured workshop sessions, research poster presentations, a “tea with elders” keynote — a discussion panel with First Nations, Métis and Inuit elders and facilitators — and research progress presentations.

The symposium’s theme this year focused on “the importance of centring the Indigenous voice in health research and the critical role that language plays in disrupting colonial narratives.”

“It’s an opportunity to bring community members, students, faculty members, community researchers together to talk about research, to talk about the innovations that we have in our workplace,” said Lavoie.

Lavoie said rather than solely focus on illness prevention and treatment, the research presented works to explore a wider concept of “health in a positive sense.”

“For an Indigenous community health is language, health is housing, health is water, health is employment, health is pride,” said Lavoie.

“It’s mental health, it’s a connection to the land, to the animal, it’s food security.”

There is also a strong focus on inter-community support within the symposium.

“We try to promote strength-based research,” said Lavoie. “Instead of talking about all the bad things that are happening, we talk about all the good things that are happening as well.”

This is, in part, so presenters and visitors alike feel they are safe to take in research, ask questions and build a dialogue around what they are learning, according to Lavoie.

“What is very important for us is that this is a safe environment where we come together once a year to tell each other about what we’ve been doing, to tell each other about good stories, to have, sometimes, difficult conversations but to have them in a safe and culturally appropriate and meaningful way,” she said.

Lavoie said that the symposium is also an opportunity for students to present their research and receive feedback.

“It’s meant to be a mentorship opportunity as well for students to develop their own communication skills in front of their community members, sometimes their parents, sometimes their relatives because it’s a very small community altogether,” she said.

Community members provide a particularly important perspective.

UMGSA holding referendum on student fees

The U of M Graduate Student Association (UMGSA) is holding a referendum on whether or not to increase UMGSA fees based on inflation.

The question will be phrased “Do you support having the fees collected on behalf of the UMGSA indexed to inflation?” The official campaigning period started Monday.

The decision comes after UMSU voted to index its fees to inflation rates in 2015.

As the old saying goes, “the road to hell is paved with good intentions.”

While the original meaning behind a team name or logo may be pure, the perspectives of marginalized groups cannot be ignored.

There will be those resistant to such change. There are those unwilling to look toward the past with anything but blind admiration, and those unwilling give in to politically correct culture.

However, to borrow a meaningful phrase, “intent does not erase impact.”

You may have thought nothing of a name, of an action or of a policy, but that does not give you the right to tell someone their pain — or their offence — is not valid.

Just because you understand the meaning behind the name Chicago Blackhawks or feel pride in the name Washington Redskins, does not give you the right to tell others to sit down and shut up.

We need both sides to come together and have a frank discussion about what is to be done. Hiding behind rhetoric and platitudes about respect do not further the discussion but serve to slow down a natural evolution.

Most of all, we need people to understand that just because your intentions are pure it does not mean your impact will not be hurtful.

In the meantime, if you are in a toxic workplace, the situation is not hopeless. It is time to get help and get out.

Santa comes to town with a new float

After uncertain fate, Santa Claus Parade returns BRAIDEN PERGIS, STAFF

T

he Winnipeg Santa Claus Parade came to the city last Saturday, celebrating its 109th year. This year a new Santa Claus float was the focus of the parade.

The first Santa Claus parade began in 1905, put on by the Eaton’s department store in Toronto. In 1909, Santa Claus parades began in Winnipeg and Montreal. More than 3,000 Manitobans usually take part in the parade itself, making the Winnipeg Santa Claus Parade the second-largest parade in Canada and the largest nighttime parade. This year 77 floats were entered into the parade.

Monica Derksen, the Winnipeg Santa Claus Parade director, said the new float was purchased this year because of support from across the city, after the withdrawal of a major sponsor.

“This project was made possible because all of Winnipeggers,” she said.

“The fundraising campaign that we went through had hundreds of donors participating anywhere from a five-dollar donation to a $40,000 contribution from SkipTheDishes.

I think it’s just a really Manitoban way of getting to the goal. Everybody participates. Everybody feels ownership and we really feel like this float is a community asset and it belongs to everybody.”

was declared unsafe because of its deteriorating decorations and its burnt-out lighting. After sponsorship fell through, a GoFundMe page was created with a goal of $100,000 to repair the float. Through the aid of many companies and Winnipeggers, $161,401 was raised, ensuring the continuance of the parade.

“We started about a year ago with this project and we had a bit of a slow start and then when we sort of got to a crisis moment, we asked the city and the province to step in and help us out and they did in a big way,” said Derksen.

“We ended up raising even more than our goal amount [raising] $161,000 so we’re more than thrilled that people feel like it was that important that they could contribute.”

The organizers said the additional funds will be put toward the maintenance and storage costs of the float for its first year. Any funds after that will be put into a bursary pro-

gram for non-profit and community organizations.

The parade took place on Nov. 17 this year with block parties, Santa’s workshop filled with crafts, cookies and photos with Santa at Cityplace and a performance by Camerata Nova, singing holiday classics and some of their own songs as well.

Derksen said the parade is wel-

coming for all Winnipeggers.

“I think one of the things that we really strongly identify with is it’s free and open to the public,” she said.

“It’s accessible. It’s a holiday atmosphere. It’s celebratory. I think it’s a great way to launch the season regardless of what you specifically celebrate. It’s a coming together of the community and celebrating our city.”

Royal Winnipeg Ballet presents scholarships for dancers in training Programs aimed at helping participants become professional ballet dancers AMIN MONTAZERI POUR AGHA, STAFF

T

he Royal Winnipeg Ballet (RW B) held its annual Scholarship Presentation Evening on Nov. 8, presenting nearly 60 scholarships at the RWB’s Founders’ Studio to both Canadian and international students.

The RWB school has received acclaim both at home and abroad, helping students grow in their pursuit of a career as a professional ballet dancer.

They do this by offering annual scholarships to students who wish to attend their year-long dance programs — the academic program, the aspirant program and the teacher training program.

Suzanne André, principal of the RWB professional division, said the scholarships are awarded to those already in the RWB’s ballet academic programs.

“Each scholarship has its own specific criteria and they’re quite varied.

Based on that criteria, we’re able to award scholarships to students from our program,” said André.

André said the ballet academic program is a seven-level professional training program, where students

from Grade 6 and up are taught skills for finding a career as a professional ballet dancer.

“They are completing their academic learning, as well as training six days a week,” she said.

“They are taking a daily ballet class as well as other classes that train them to be a professional dancer.”

In contrast to the ballet academic

program, the aspirant and teacher training programs are post-secondary sessions.

The former is dedicated towards providing high school graduates with a professional training in the art of ballet, while the aspirant program is a bridge between training and a career.

“Aspirants are here training with us six days a week,” said André.

“They are taking courses in terms of training techniques and pedagogy for teaching various levels of ballet,” said André.

ith a pair of losses to the University of Saskatchewan Huskies, the U of M Bisons men’s hockey team has now lost 11 in a row.

With a pile of losses already obscuring a playoff berth from view, many fans have been left scratching their heads.

How has a team that placed fourth last season fallen so far?

Powerplay woes sinking the herd fast

In the midst of a 2-11-1 opening half of the regular season schedule, a looming issue hangs over the men’s hockey team.

The club’s powerplay is killing any chance at claiming a playoff berth.

While not the backbone of a team’s offence, the powerplay can be a make-or-break factor in tight conferences and leagues.

With no more than four points separating the bottom two teams in Canada West from the final playoff

spot, this is the exact situation the Bisons find themselves.

A successful powerplay — like that of University of Alberta Golden Bears, which is operating at 25 per cent — can almost guarantee a goal or two a game. Teams in Canada West currently average four penalties a game, which for the Golden Bears gives them a potential goal per game on the man advantage.

Essentially, Alberta steps onto the ice already up 1-0 with that goal banked.

Following the weekend series with the University of Saskatchewan Huskies, the Manitoba powerplay is shooting at 15.7 per cent. This is fourth in the conference and amounts to less than a goal per game according to conference penalty averages.

The situation was much worse for the herd before the weekend with Saskatchewan. In its weekend series with the Huskies, Manitoba notched four powerplay markers on eleven

attempts. The herd was swept 6-3 and 8-2 in the two games.

Taking away the four goals scored on the powerplay against Saskatchewan, Manitoba was shooting at 10 per cent heading into the weekend.

Men’s hockey continues slide

The losses continue to pile up for the Bisons men’s hockey team, who suffered a weekend sweep by the University of Saskatchewan Huskies.

Special teams was the story in game one as the Huskies took the game 6-3. The Bisons went three-for-seven on the manadvantage and three-for-six on the penalty kill. Liam Bilton, Jeremey Leipsic and Zach Franko scored for Manitoba.

Manitoba dropped an 8-2 decision in game two, giving Saskatchewan the sweep.

Manitoba has now lost 11 straight and sits tied for last in Canada West at 2-11-1.

Women’s volleyball crushed by Dinos

The U of M Bisons women’s volleyball team had a weekend to forget, after back-to-back 3-0 losses to the University of Calgary Dinos.

Calgary took game one in straight sets, winning 25-13, 25-15 and 25-19. Manitoba’s performance in game two was even rougher, as Calgary swept them away with 25-15, 25-13 and 25-13 set wins.

With the losses, Manitoba now sits 11th in Canada West at 3-7 on the season.

ith a national championship ring already in hand, U of M Bisons women’s hockey forward Lauryn Keen is ready for her next test.

Keen is graduating with an agribusiness degree this spring and said she already knows what comes next.

“I’ve accepted a full-time job on a grain and cattle farm,” said Keen.

“I’m going to be a crop manager, so I’m pretty excited about that. It’s kind of like my dream job.”

The 22-year-old is from Manitou, Man., where hockey was the most popular sport to play.

“I lived right across from the rink, so that was pretty much the only option,” she said.

“My older brother played hockey and it was what I wanted to do, so I asked my parents if I could start a year early, so they put me into squirts when I was three years old with my brother and kind of went from there.”

Growing up in a small town, Keen played hockey with boys from age three until she was in Grade 10.

Playing the more rough-andtumble style of hockey helped her grow into the player Bisons fans see today.

“It helped me be a little more

tough out there, a little more gritty,” said Keen.

“It was kind of the only option for me growing up in a small town.

I just kind of made the most of it. I think it really helped develop me as a player and just learn to be tough out there.”

That toughness followed her all the way through to joining the herd in 2014. Keen weighed offers from other schools, but chose to stay close to home and all the comforts it brings, committing to the University of Manitoba.

“U of M just seemed like the best fit,” said Keen.

“Just because of the program I wanted to go into with agriculture.

I obviously moved away from home, but it was still close enough to go home if I needed to be, so yeah, it seemed like the best fit for me at the time.”

Keen is currently leading the Bisons in points, and is ranked third in Canada West scoring with four goals and nine assists. She took home the Canada West scoring title in 2016-17 with 34 points — nine goals and 25 assists — so Keen knows how to deal with success.

“I’m just going out there, working hard every shift and my line has

been clicking well throughout the year, so that helps a lot,” said Keen.

“Just trying to do the little things right on the ice and I guess I’ve been rewarded for it.”

Keen was a part of last season’s national championship team and said the championship season is something she will remember forever.

The men’s volleyball team had a bit more luck in its weekend series with the Calgary Dinos. The herd won game one 3-2 but lost game two 3-0.

In game one, Manitoba looked on the verge of sweeping Calgary aside, up 2-0 after two sets. The Dinos battled back winning back-to-back sets and forcing a deciding fifth.

Manitoba took home the win with a dominant 15-9 victory.

he U of M Bisons men’s basketball team rounded out the first half of the schedule with a pair of sound defeats from the No. 3 University of Calgary Dinos.

The Bisons were stomped by the Dinos 87-59 at the Investors Group Athletic Centre Friday.

Calgary owned the three-point line and sunk 11 of 18 attempts in the opening half.

The visiting team’s defence was also key in the first half, holding the Bisons to a 30 per cent shooting rate, while the Dinos shot at 60 per cent.

Calgary was led by Brett Layton’s 12 points and five rebounds, and Mambi Diawara’s 14 points.

Manitoba struggled to get anything going but Rashawn Browne led the way with a team-high 13 points.

With an early 9-6 lead, the Dinos strung together 14 straight points to stretch out a 23-6 advantage. Malik Irwin ended the run with a threepointer. Calgary led 29-12 after the first quarter.

The Dinos continued to dominate and opened the second frame with an 11-2 run.

The teams exchanged chances for the remainder of the frame and the Dinos took a 30-point lead into halftime, up 55-25.

The teams battled in the third quarter, and the herd finished strong on an 11-2 run.

DJ Jordan Jr. scored eight of the

11 points, cutting the deficit to 67-46 entering the fourth.

Despite the Bisons’ third quarter surge, the Dinos got off to a 20-0 run to open the fourth and ran away with the 87-59 victory.

“They really controlled the tempo in the first half,” Bisons head coach Kirby Schepp told Bison Sports.

Saturday

The herd again fell to the Dinos 72-55 Saturday to enter the holiday break at 3-7 on the year.

Layton led the way again for Calgary with 22 points and 13 rebounds. Browne had a team-high 16 points for Manitoba.

The teams went back and forth throughout the first quarter and both teams struggled to score.

A Jordan Jr. dunk energized the crowd, but the visitors led 17-13 after

the first.

Calgary pulled away in the second frame with an 11-0 run, taking a 35-19 lead.

André Arruda drained a trey before the break, but the Bisons trailed 37-23 at halftime.

Arruda hit two three-pointers early in the third quarter and James Wagner and Cameron O’Hara each made a big block in the frame.

Manitoba tightened up defensively but could not get much going on the offensive end of the floor, as the Dinos took home a 72-55 win.

“Calgary is a great team, obviously, they’re ranked number three in the country,” said Wagner.

“Just to be competing with them and showing that we can actually keep up with them, that’s definitely encouraging for us going forward.”

Manitoba will have over a month to prepare for the second half of the season and Wagner said he knows what the team needs to work on.

“Cleaning up our execution,” said Wagner.

“We’re working hard, the right intentions are there but some other stuff we’re just kind of sloppy with, so I think that’ll definitely be a point of emphasis going into the second half.”

Manitoba will resume play after the break with a pair of games in Edmonton against the University of Alberta Golden Bears. Game one is Jan. 4 at 9 p.m. CST and game two is the next day at 8 p.m.
