Anita Sarkeesian on life after Gamergate

The Kickstarter campaign that funded the series garnered nearly $160,000 and was backed by over 6,000 donors. Some of her videos are even used in high school and university classrooms.

“The Wikipedia article about me was vandalized with sexist and racist slurs and pornographic images, and when you look at the history of the edits to the page, there were a few dozen IP addresses involved.”

She later became a target in the ensuing #Gamergate movement.

Gamergate began in 2014 as a Twitter hashtag meant to question the ethical ramifications of video game journalism, but eventually descended into personal attacks against several prominent women in the industry — including Sarkeesian.

“I was challenging the entire industry to grow the hell up and recognize that women have always been gaming fans, and to maybe not create incredible detailed immersive, fascinating fantasy worlds that are actively hostile to us or at best completely ignore us,” said Sarkeesian.

Sarkeesian recently released a book, History vs. Women: The Defiant Lives That They Don’t Want you to Know, on Oct. 2.

In History vs. Women, Sarkeesian and co-author Ebony Adams tell the stories of 25 women throughout history who led extraordinary lives.

It looks at both lesser-known women — such as the Chinese pirate Ching Shih — and more

Despite her experiences within the industry, Sarkeesian said she still enjoys playing video games.

“I’m not saying that the problem’s been solved,” said Sarkeesian.

he arts are more than just the television shows you watch, the paintings hung in restaurants or the books you are forced to read in English class. The arts allow us to understand the problems within society and in our country and to recognize our own personal biases.

The arts are an outlet for expression If you have ever read a book, watched a movie or heard a song you can relate to, to the point where your mind is syncing with your heart and for a moment you feel complete and inspired, you are experiencing the work of artists and creatives.

The arts bring cultural relevance to our province and allow people to have a platform to voice concerns and for marginalized communities to feel recognized.

These people in turn inspire their communities by sharing their own journeys with others. The province

has a responsibility and moral obligation to support the arts.

According to a report published

by Manitobans for the Arts in 2017, Winnipeg has the lowest funding for the arts sector among major Canadian cities at $7 per capita.

Since the last provincial election, Brian Pallister’s Progressive Conservative government reduced the Arts Branch’s grant assistance program by $200,000 and Manitoba’s culture sector by $700,000 in total.

The film industry took a major cut with an additional $300,000 budget reduction on top of the other culturerelated cuts.

Yes, the Manitoba government did promise to contribute $15 million to the new construction of the Inuit Art Centre at the Winnipeg Art Gallery, but that is not enough and should not be justification for the lack of support for the entire arts and culture sector.

It’s not OK to be white

Before I begin my argument, I need to make a few things clear.

I have white privilege whether I advance the perpetuation of white privilege or attempt to dismantle it my entire life. For example, I never have to worry that I might be pulled over by the police simply because of my race. I did not create it and cannot be culpable for its existence, yet I still have white privilege. I am not a self-loathing white person. I was not programmed by academia to think this way. I promote my class interests and reject the concept of white identity because of my lived experience.

White identity, expressed explicitly or masquerading under the auspices of culture, has never been wielded as a tool of liberation.

Rather, those coalescing around white identity to advance white interests have only advanced white interests in a bid to suppress the freedoms of others.

Rather, white identity is exclusively used as a means of obtaining an advantage over another group. As white studies historian David Roediger succinctly wrote, “It is not merely that whiteness is oppressive and false; it is that whiteness is nothing but oppressive and false.”

Those who defend advancing white interests point to people of colour who have organized politically to advance their identity’s interests. When people of colour have propagated their identity interests, it is always done to achieve economic and social liberation on par with white people. When Black people organized Black Lives Matter, whether in Toronto or Baltimore, it was to achieve the same treatment by the police and the state that white people receive.

In response, the white identitarians proclaimed “All Lives Matter.”

They rejected the call for equality by denying the specificity of the issue.

It was a cloaked slogan to enshrine the status quo. It was whiteness in action.

To embrace our shared humanity and destroy all vestiges of waged labour — whiteness was con-

structed to help differentiate waged labour from slavery — white people must betray their race.

John Brown was a proud racetraitor. In 1856 and in 1859 he led armed insurrections against the American South in a bid to start a slave revolt to overthrow slavery and white supremacy. He fully rejected white interests. He wanted to free the entire nation from the confines of white identity.

As a result, even as white liberals finally came to accept the righteousness of ending racial segregation in the 1960s, they still viewed John Brown as a crazed lunatic.

It was not the violence that made John Brown untenable to the white liberal. Rather, it was his rejection of white interests. People like Brown were called “ultra-abolitionists” in his time precisely because of the abandonment of white interests.

In the 1960s, everyone said he was mentally deranged and in the 2000s he was America’s first terrorist. But in actuality, he was always a national liberator. He had come to liberate America from whiteness.

Brown wanted to build something in opposition to white identity, which had always divided white workers from their natural ally, the Black slave. As Brown said in his last speech before he was hanged, “Had I so interfered in behalf of the rich […] it would have been all right.” Brown had correctly identified the central benefactor of whiteness — the owner class.

In 1979, the Greensboro Massacre took place in North Carolina. The Communist Workers Party organized a “Death to the Klan” rally in to be held in a Black neighbourhood. The Ku Klux Klan and the American Nazi Party shot and killed five communists and wounded 10 more in retaliation for disrupting a screening of The Birth of a Nation in July of 1979. A police informant, who was also a Klansman, was able to obtain the location of the rally by securing a police map of the march.

All the murderers were acquitted by an all-white jury. Twice. The white communists who died were race-traitors and every single one of those who marched was a class hero.

Whiteness is maintained partly by white people’s apathy toward the destructive force of whiteness.

Often, it almost seems as though the bulk of white people are entirely unaware of their racial interests — although they are universally and perpetually asserted. But white people erupt the moment white identity is challenged.

There is a real tangible benefit of whiteness people understand and wish to maintain. Sociologist W.E.B. Du Bois called it a “psychological wage.” At the same time, whiteness prevents the manifestation of true democracy and economic freedom that would benefit every person.

Today the modern John Browns are antifa who seek to violently confront those who most explicitly articulate white dominance through capitalism and governmental policies. The current debate among white liberals is who is worse, the anti-fascists or the merchants of white pride. In constructing an equivalence between the two, these white liberals attempt to point to a middle road as the way forward.

This road is also known as the status quo.

It just so happens that the status quo is already built on white identity and white interests. In effect, the white liberal wants a quiet sort of white supremacy that does not operate with such openness.

The overt violence exacted to defend the whiteness enumerated here pales in comparison to the systemic violence suffered by every non-white person. It is entrenched and it is relentless and the white liberal is afraid to usurp its power because it would break the liberal order.

While this seems abstract, the practice is quite concrete.

Black Panther Party member Fred Hampton — who was assassinated in his bed by the FBI — said it best: “We understand that racism is an excuse used for capitalism […] We say we’re not going to fight capitalism with black capitalism, but we’re going to fight it with socialism.”

A world built on freedom, on equality, on economic justice, on Indigenous peoples’ self-determination cannot exist alongside whiteness or capitalism or the liberal order. For the white worker to join every other worker on this planet, she must become a race traitor, embrace her class interests above all else and then she will finally have her humanity restored. For someone who clings onto whiteness cannot truly be a part of humankind.

Whiteness must be abolished. It must be betrayed. It must, at long last, die.

Stella’s campaign underlines lack of worker rights

n Nov. 8, an Instagram account with the name @notmystellas released its first post.

Referencing Winnipeg’s favourite café, Stella’s Café & Bakery, the post detailed a grim story of management perpetuating sexism, homophobia and a gross mistreatment of frontline staff.

Just weeks later, the account has since published hundreds of posts detailing similar sentiments, while collecting well over 12,000 followers and an outpouring of public support.

Meanwhile, for the entire year of 2017, Manitoba Workplace Safety and Health received only one single complaint of harassment against the chain. These realities should be a wakeup call for Manitoba lawmakers.

Manitoba workplace legislation has failed women and minorities in the workplace for decades and the situation at Stella’s is evidence that, structurally, little has changed.

Within the framework of a colonial capitalist system, it would be naive to assume a small business has the best interest of its employees in mind. When employees do not understand the rights they are enti-

tled to, their rights become negated.

The least Stella’s can do to maintain any shred of credibility is to comply completely with these entirely reasonable demands. On Nov. 12, Stella’s released a statement claiming both Burrows and Anderson took an indefinite leave of absence pending an independent investigation.

It is a testament to the magnitude and strength of the movement these three women started that two top executives have been placed on leave.

For the sake of the potentially hundreds of employees who had to endure the mistreatment at their hands, both must be permanently removed from their positions if there will be any justice served.

The positive change this movement has triggered cannot be overstated.

The attention will undoubtedly cause a ripple effect on many other Manitoba businesses, which will positively affect countless other employees.

Winnipeg’s response to the #notmystella’s movement is a beacon of positive change to come for all workers.

Local man regretting not being ‘extremely online’ after getting BOFA’d MURV BERKLEY

local 27-year-old man has announced his regret at not having spent the last several years being “extremely online” after he was severely BOFA’d by his friend.

Devon Guimonche received the BOFAing Monday afternoon through Google Hangouts from his friend Greg Anderson.

“Did you see Trudeau's announcement?

He was talking about possible changes to the GST and suggested stimulating BOFA” read the first message.

“I guess he sees them as related. Like, changing the GST would stimulate BOFA. I think I'm in favour of it tbh. Not much detail yet, but if he's doing it the way I hope, then it could be really good.”

“I didn’t know what they meant. That’s why I asked what BOFA was,” said an emotionally devastated Guimonche.

“I spent all of my adult life going outside, meeting people, admiring nature. What an idiot I was. I was never online. I hadn’t built up any defence mechanisms. I was just a sitting duck.”

Guimonche said he was planning on getting “really online” to prevent similar incidents from happening in the future but would need time to recover first.

“It’s going to take time to get back to normal. He followed up by sending me a GIF of a guy getting dunked on. You don’t just bounce back from that,” said Guimonche.

The Ivory Buffalo reached out to Anderson for comment but was told he would only provide comment in exchange for LIGMA.

omposer Kristen Wachniak graduated this past June with a BMus in composition from the U of M. In the short time since, she has attended the Lunenburg Academy of Music Performance’s composition academy and secured two commissions set to be performed in spring 2019.

At the Lunenburg Academy, Wachniak attended master classes, lectures with guest composters and other composition students from across Canada and was able to workshop a piece with an ensemble.

“It was a really valuable experience not only for the musical aspect, but also just broadening my perspective through the discussions with composers and techniques and interests,” Wachniak said.

Wachniak’s interest in composing started at a young age when taking piano lessons.

ast month, Juno Awardwinning singer Dan Mangan released his fifth album, More or Less.

Mangan will be bringing this new album to the Winnipeg stage next February, performing at the Garrick Centre for his cross-Canada tour. Mangan began performing at the age of 20, taking the stage in bars and touring around the world to share his music. During this time, he met his partner and got married. Together, these factors helped him write the songs for More or Less, exploring topics of regret and the value of life.

The album starts with “Lynchpin,” where a bass guitar slowly strums in the background, later adding drums and an electric

Bisons lose weekend duel to U of A Golden Bears

he U of M Bisons men’s volleyball team hosted the University of Alberta Golden Bears on the weekend. Solid play by Owen Schwartz gave the herd hope through backto-back losses.

The Bisons lost a tough battle to the Golden Bears 3-2 on Friday at the Investors Group Athletic Centre.

Taryq Sani led the visitors with 20 kills and 10 digs in the match, while the home side was led by Kevin Negus’ 20 kills and Schwartz’s 11 digs.

Alberta came out strong in the opening set, hitting at a .652 per cent rate and holding the Bisons to a .118 hitting percentage. The Golden Bears dominated their way to a 25-13 win in the first set.

Manitoba regrouped in the second set, winning 25-23.

With Alberta leading 14-12, the Bisons scored six consecutive points to take an 18-14 lead. The run was

controlled by Negus, who slammed down two kills and served up four aces. Manitoba led for the rest of the set and Dustin Spiring ended it with a kill for the herd.

The Bisons were in command again in the third set and hit at a team-high .300 per cent. The herd led for the entire set and Schwartz capped it off with a kill to give Manitoba a 25-17 win.

Manitoba was on the brink of victory, up 24-23 in the fourth set, when a Ben Carleton service error tied the game at 24-24. The Golden Bears took a 25-24 lead and won the set on an attack error by Negus, forcing a fifth and final set.

The final set went back-andforth, but the visitors were the better team, hitting at .471 per cent while Manitoba hit at .174 per cent. Alberta was led by Alex McMullin’s four kills in the set and won by a score of 15-13 to take the match.

he U of M Bisons women’s volleyball club returned to the court to host the University of Alberta Pandas this weekend, losing back-to-back games to drop to 4-5 on the year.

The Bisons fell to the Pandas 3-1 Friday at the Investors Group Athletic Centre.

Kory White had a strong presence throughout the match and slammed down a game-high 19 kills for the Pandas. Manitoba was led by Laura Findlay with 13 kills and 15 digs.

Cassie Bujan was heavily involved for the home side, tying Jenae Eisler of the visitors with a game-high 16 digs.

The Pandas led 16-10 at the technical timeout of the first set and did not look back. With help from three service aces, Alberta took the set by a score of 25-17.

The herd responded in the second set and got off to a 12-4 lead, which forced the Pandas into a timeout.

Bisons wide-out eyeing CFL career

ide-out Dylan Schrot finished his Bisons career with a season worthy of a Canada West All-Star team selection.

In nine games, the 24-year-old racked up 788 receiving yards and finished tied for second in the conference with six receiving touchdowns.

Now, the five-foot-10, 190-pound receiver is hopeful to continue his success into the CFL. “I’m optimistic for what the future holds,” said Schrot.

“Right now, I’m in preparation for the CFL draft process and just going to continue to improve and try to get a shot in the league.”

Schrot said he knows a lot of work

needs to be put in prior to draft day.

“They do a lot of athletic-based testing there,” said Schrot.

“Getting the body physically and mentally ready for that and after that you just hope you get an opportunity and continue to just work on your skills, size, speed, strength, all those things and see what happens.”

Schrot welcomes an opportunity to play for any CFL team but says being picked by the Winnipeg Blue Bombers would be a “dream come true.”

“Your first choice is always the team you grew up cheering for,” said Schrot.

“But, if another team is willing to give me an opportunity I’d be just as

“I played until I was about 14, played at the provincial level for Team Manitoba, just kind of fell out of love with the game going into high school and quit soccer and then picked up football in Grade 11 and kind of just took it and ran with it.”

It was during his second year of junior football that Schrot knew he wanted to see how far he could take the sport.

“I kind of had my breakout year that year and confidence was a lot higher,” he said.

“It was after that season I kind of told myself that I’m going to really push for this as much as I can and just try to be the best player I can be.”

Schrot played football in Calgary and B.C. before university, but decided to return home to play for the University of Manitoba.

“In the back of my mind I had always pinpointed U of M as my target,” said Schrot.

“Living in Calgary for a few years I thought maybe I’d play for them, but when it came time to decide where I want to pursue the next level, U of M was the one calling my name the most.”

Schrot had five years of junior football split between British Columbia and Calgary, so returning home had an extra dimension. Finally playing in Winnipeg again, Schrot’s family was able to attend his games a lot more.

“These past couple years have really been nice,” he said.

“Just being around them right after the games and just knowing that possibly my last ride in football was done in front of them.”

The 24-year-old has had many memorable moments with the Bisons, but a few recent ones stand out most for him.

In week three Schrot experienced his first win at Investors Group Field and played a big role in the comeback win.

“Fourth quarter we were down a field goal and I was fortunate enough to catch the two touchdown passes in the fourth quarter and propel us to a win, so that was a big moment,” said Schrot.

This season’s homecoming game was another stand-out for the receiver.

“We were down 17 points with about five, six minutes left, and we rallied to force overtime,” said Schrot.

“We ended up losing on a twopoint convert [in] that game, but it was an unbelievable experience to even make that comeback in the first place.”

If this season was in fact Schrot’s last ride, he will not be going far from sports in his post-football life.

The CFL draft hopeful has been pursuing an arts degree in psychology during his studies.

“I want to get into sports psychology,” said Schrot.

“Sports have been a huge part of my life, my whole life,” he said. “So I feel I would be well-suited to stay in that field.”

Schrot brought his education into the end zone during his first touchdown celebration at IGF. “I did my little meditation pose after I scored a touchdown,” said Schrot.

“Just being big into sports psychology, meditation is something I do quite frequently, so I wanted to kind of shed light on that a little bit.”

That being said, Schrot said he wants to continue as a football receiver for many years to come and has an easy explanation as to why he loves the position: “Catching touchdowns.”

“I feel honoured,” Carreiro said.

“Especially because it’s my hometown club and I’m happy to go play professionally in my hometown in front of my friends and family.”

The Winnipeg-born midfielder was the second-overall pick in the inaugural CPL-U Sports draft.

He will also have the distinction of being the first ever draft-pick by Valour FC. This newfound pedigree has done nothing to add pressure to Carreiro.

The York University Lions product said it is now up to him to prove head coach Rob Gale was right to choose him, and that he feels he is ready for that test.

“There’s not much pressure that gets to me,” he said. “And this is something that makes me happy and makes me want to work even more and be the best that I can and help Valour win [...] in the future.”

Women’s hockey splits in Vancouver

The Bisons women’s hockey team was in Vancouver to take on the UBC Thunderbirds this weekend and stole a come-frombehind win in the opener before letting a lead slip away in the rematch.

In game one, the herd rallied from a 2-0 hole to win 3-2 in a shootout. Jordyn Zacharias had a goal in regulation and added another in the skills contest to continue her torrid pace.

Manitoba dropped the second game despite leading 1-0 heading into the third period.

Natasha Kostenko had the lone Bisons goal — picked up in the first period. UBC scored twice in the third period to take the game 2-1.

With a 7-3-2-0 record, the Bisons sit second in Canada West, three points back of the University of Alberta Pandas.

Women’s basketball loses pair to Regina

adison Wilford finished up her final season with the Bisons in spectacular fashion.

With four clean sheets in the final six games of the regular season, Wilford helped the Bisons finish with a 6-5-3 record. This put the herd third in the Canada West Prairie division, but the season ended with a first-round playoff exit, courtesy of the University of Northern British Columbia Timberwolves.

The Winnipeg-born keeper sat down recently to discuss her career in soccer, and where she hopes to go next.

Wilford began her soccer career at a young age and was pushed toward the sport by family.

“I started playing soccer when I was three,” she said. “I have two older sisters, so just kind of followed in their footsteps, whatever they did.”

Although Wilford has backstopped the Bisons for the past four years, she was not always a goalie.

“I was actually an outside midfielder for a while,” she said.

“When I was 11 or something, there was an injury and they needed somebody to step in net.”

Tending twine is in Wilford’s blood, as her sisters were both goalies. At the time her mom was happy Wilford was playing as an outside midfielder — she did not want to deal with the stress of another daughter playing goal.

However everything changed

when Wilford stepped into the net for her injured teammate.

“I kind of grew up watching [my sisters] play the position and kind of knew the positioning, and just came super natural to me and I loved it,” said Wilford.

“Of course, much to my mother’s dismay I loved it.”

“Soccer was just something that I did in the summer to keep me in shape for ringette,” said Wilford.

The sport became a focus for Wilford when she was scouted to be in the National Development Centre Program, which was the academy program at Glenlawn Collegiate.

“We trained every morning at

The Bisons women’s basketball team hit a wall against the University of Regina Cougars this weekend. The Cougars swept the Bisons aside with back-to-back wins.

Taylor Randall was a star in game one, leading the herd with 24 points. The Cougars led 27-19 after the first quarter and rode that momentum to a 91-75 win.

Manitoba got out to a good start in Saturday’s action and ended the opening quarter up 16-13. However, Regina took over and cruised to an 83-60 win. Nicole Konieczny led the way for the Bisons with 16 points on the day.

With the losses, the Bisons now sit tied for sixth in the conference at 5-3.

Men’s basketball splits tight weekend in Regina

The men’s basketball team fared slightly better than its female counterpart. The herd split the weekend series against the Cougars in two close games.

Manitoba came out the victor in game one by a 76-72 score.

The offence was spread around for the Bisons, as five players hit double digits in points. James Wagner and Andre Arruda led the way with 14 and 13 points, respectively.

Game t wo was even tighter as the Cougars edged out the Bisons with an 86-85 win. Wagner had a monster game, putting up 26 points for Manitoba.

The split puts Manitoba at 3-5 on the year, good for 12th in the conference.
