So what is Rogers to do? They need to modernize.

Bringing in some younger and more analytics-savvy voices would be a good start. The Athletic has a history of snatching up the smartest talent in the sports writing business, and has seen huge growth by leaning into the analytics community.

Instead of having the same few white hockey men sitting and complaining about effort and grit, maybe people like Ian Tulloch, Rachel Doerrie or Sean Tierney could sit behind the desk, breaking down statistics, expected goals and heat maps.

Tierney — who posts hockey analytics and figures on Twitter — could have a whole segment where he brings up charts on a large screen to describe why teams are rising and falling, or heat maps to show where shots are coming from on a particular night.

Hockey fans are getting smarter.

Rogers needs to lean into this by showing viewers the information

NHL teams themselves are already using. They should draw that crowd back to the television or streaming service by representing their interests.

If Rogers seriously wants to replace the “Coach’s Corner” tandem, there is also a fit already in the company’s back pocket.

The extremely popular Jeff Marek and Elliotte Friedman tandem — currently the hosts of 31 Thoughts: The Podcast — could occupy the intermission slot. Both are well-travelled media personalities, are popular with a young audience and have built-in chemistry.

Friedman is a hockey insider with clout in the game second only to the legendary Bob McKenzie, and Marek is the community-focused mirror to Ron MacLean. The two together could carry the broadcast forward for the next few years, or even decades, bringing loyal fans along for the ride.

Whatever Rogers decides to do in the future, it cannot move backwards.

The national game is becoming less and less important to Canadians, with shifting demographics, rising costs and a problematic culture.

If Rogers stands by and doesn’t get with the times, in the future it won’t be hockey night, it’ll just be Saturday night.

The false dichotomy of city council’s transit cuts Taxing vacant homes is a viable alternative to cutting Winnipeg’s most essential services KENNY INGRAM, STAFF

hen it comes to budgeting, Winnipeg’s city council continues to demonstrate its expertise in reactionary policy.

At Winnipeg city council’s public works committee meeting Nov. 13, transit managers claimed that the only way to keep spending under the two per cent cap proposed would be with “significant cuts to service.”

The services they intend to cut include the free Downtown Spirit routes, ending weekday routes over an hour earlier at 12:15 a.m., discontinu-

The reality, however, is that Winnipeg’s city council has remained silent on one of the biggest issues facing nearly every large city in Canada: vacant homes.

The problem, seemingly originating in B.C., is wealthy people buying property and letting it sit dormant to avoid higher rates of taxation. In 2015, one third of the real estate market in Vancouver was owned by Chinese buyers — essentially, people who do not call B.C. their home, and are wealthy enough to own at least two properties.

New B.C. vape laws a recipe for black market growth

n Nov. 14, the B.C. government announced new regulations on vaping products. The new laws intend to crack down on the increased number of youths using vape products which has become a significant issue in recent years.

A study conducted by researchers at the University of Waterloo showed a 74 per cent increase in vaping from 2017 to 2018 for Canadian youths aged 16 to 19.

According to the new regulations

which will come into effect in spring of next year, taxes on vape products will increase to 20 per cent, from seven per cent, restrictions will be placed on sales so that flavoured liquids can exclusively be sold in adultonly stores and rules on advertising will be put into place so that ads cannot be put up in places where young people would be easily influenced, such as bus shelters and public parks.

Vaping liquids and pods will also be required to conform to plain pack-

aging standards — no bright colours or logos — and will include Health Canada warnings on the label.

These packaging standards have been implemented in an attempt to make products less appealing to kids and to reduce brand appeal. They have already been applied to cigarette labels according to new laws by the federal government which came into effect Nov. 9.

The strict B.C. regulations present the significant risk of youths turning to the black market to purchase vape products which are cheaper due to the lack of taxes and age restrictions.

We have seen a similar effect in what has occurred with cannabis products.

Nearly half of cannabis consumers — 42 per cent — purchased at least some of their cannabis from illegal sources during the first half of 2019, according to data from the National Cannabis Survey published

by Statistics Canada (StatCan).

Cannabis use among Canadian youth is three times higher than that of adults according to StatCan data from 2017.

If a cheaper alternative of a substance is available, legal or not, people are likely to select it. This in turn feeds a black market that can only

Don Cherry’s firing a gift to right-wing outrage machine Channelling frustrations of the ‘proud Canadian’ is red meat for the far right CAM CANNON, STAFF

O

n Nov. 11, Don Cherry’s 38-year run as a commentator on Hockey Night in Canada abruptly came to an end.

Cherry was dismissed from his position after massive fallout from a rant on his program in which he singled out immigrants for coming to Canada, liking our “milk and honey,” but not adequately supporting the troops, who are, in his mind, the ones to thank for it.

Since his dismissal Cherry has taken many interviews in which he has been asked if he would offer an apology for his remarks. He adamantly refuses to apologize but concedes that he should have said “everybody” instead of “you people” in his rant.

It is important to note that, for Cherry, this has been a pattern of behaviour. Going back as far as 1990, in an interview on CBC’s The Fifth Estate he outright made remarks about “foreigners” coming to Canada and taking Canadian money and jobs, and proclaimed himself a nationalist.

He is apologetic since it finally

cost him his job and platform. What he’s sticking to are his core “oldstock Canadian” beliefs — in this case mythologizing the troops as the ultimate granters of freedom and fostering resentment toward newcomers to Canada.

Cherry’s firing is emblematic of the loss of status for what he represents.

The many people outraged at the decision to sack Cherry, “the silent majority” as he himself often claims, view his firing as part of a decadeslong culture war. Exemplifying this is an opinion piece recently published in the Calgary Sun that makes the claim that Don Cherry’s Canada is dying but fighting back.

Indeed, there has been some degree of fighting back from the Canadian far right — ranging from a Toronto man vandalizing a war monument in protest of Cherry’s firing, to a rally attended by a dozen or so people who quickly turned to rhetoric about globalists and Jeffrey Epstein, on top of an outpouring of online support from unsavoury characters

such as Paul Fromm, Faith Goldy and the Proud Boys.

What is at issue here is not the poppy itself — rather, it is the question of what a Canadian icon, one

The deep and powerful reach of assholes in society Exploration of documented idiocy ‘Assholes: A Theory’ screens at Cinematheque GRACE PAIZEN, STAFF

D

o you have to be an asshole to get somewhere in life? Are there special advantages to being an asshole? Is there such a thing as “a proper asshole?”

These are all questions asked — and partially answered — in Canadian filmmaker John Walker’s documentary film Assholes: A Theory.

The partially Gimli-shot film came to Cinematheque Nov. 13 and is sure to amuse and dishearten audiences during its short run at the local cinema.

Based on the 2012 self-help book Assholes: A Theory by University of California, Irvine professor Aaron James, Walker’s film discusses what attributes make someone an asshole and how society is attempting to dismantle systems that breed “assholery.”

As per usual in the discussion of assholery, the film mentions notorious assholes Kanye West, Harvey Weinstein and Rob Ford.

Though U.S. President Donald Trump’s name is never explicitly mentioned on screen — there is a Trump Tower walk-by in New York City, N.Y., — he haunts the film as a he-who-must-not-be-named figure.

Walker’s interviewees — which include everyone from Cornell University professors to comedian John Cleese — grapple with how best to describe an asshole.

The consensus seems to be that

an asshole is someone who doesn’t have morals.

Basically, real assholes don’t realize they are assholes, and if you feel bad after you’ve committed an episode of assholery, you are not an asshole.

The songs are relatively catchy, and Botelho has charisma and an undeniably powerful voice, often recalling Celine Dion in how she seems to sing from the throat, curling her voice around words in a way that belies her age.

Opener “Body Language” is perhaps the strongest — and most modern-sounding — song of the bunch, with a throbbing, Robynindebted synth figure and her most enjoyably overblown chorus.

Botelho’s drawled phrasing during the verse plays excitingly against the relatively minimal pulse that she rides atop.

It is a genuinely promising taste of what she’s capable of conjuring.

It’s the failure to experiment with her inf luences across the remaining three tracks that ultimately does Poesy a disservice.

It seems Poesy — a contestant on Canadian star-making reality show The Launch — was in search of a discernable sound and brand, something that sets her apart from the generally depressive minimalism of current pop music.

Vaguely empowering, gothic ’80s pop-rock is a genre ripe for the picking, and if Botelho and her collaborators manage to take the assignment slightly less literally, there’s plenty of reason to be excited about Poesy’s future.

For now, however, there’s an undeniable sense of nostalgia gone wrong — a fundamental misunderstanding of why ’80s pop remains relevant today.

The best aspects of the decade’s sounds — the iciness, the spaciousness, the elasticity and willingness to experiment — are ignored in favour of its worst tendencies.

Botelho — who makes music under the name Poesy — toes the everdelicate line between homage and pastiche — and more often than not falls toward the latter.

Glass Box Confessional is a somewhat-dated sounding collection of songs, often leaning too heavily on detail-obliterating synth washes, blown-out guitar and pounding, motorik ’80s rhythms.

Chugging closer “Never Getting Rid of Me” is perhaps the most egregious, sounding like a copyright-free ’80s YouTube instrumental more than anything else.

Were it not for the top-40 enormity of the choruses and the compressed, mid-2000s-pop production, most of these songs wouldn’t sound out of place following Pat Benatar on throwback radio.

urated by Gitxaala artist Leena Minifie and featuring artwork from six — predominantly Canadian — Indigenous artists across Turtle Island, the University of Winnipeg’s Gallery 1C03 is hosting When Raven Became Spider until Nov. 30.

Jennifer Gibson — curator of Gallery 1C03 — organized the exhibition’s stop at the U of W. “We don’t have a school of fine arts

at the University of Winnipeg,” she said.

“In terms of what we program here, we try to program exhibitions or artist’s work that we feel can connect to multiple streams of study.”

The touring exhibit — circulated by the Dunlop Art Gallery in Regina, Sask. — features artistic works that combine traditional Indigenous arts and storytelling with superhero and

comic book imagery and styles.

The ubiquity of transformation through these forms inspired Minifie.

“With classic comic works, graphic novels and our own traditional stories, there’s always mention of transformation,” Minifie said.

“A lot of our stories are kind of based around the supernatural world and a lot of our stories maybe don’t get told in our traditional context

The biggest step forward in James’s artistic career was moving beyond the U of M and finding her place at the Martha Street Studio.

“Just creating a body of work outside of school walls feels like an accomplishment in itself when there isn’t a ton of support in it,” she said.

James said she has seen animation become a lot more present in the fine art world too.

“I think it’s having a good moment right now.”

he Trinity Western Spartans conquered IG Athletic Centre over the weekend, as the U of M Bisons volleyball clubs failed to win a single set in a pair of series sweeps.

Women’s volleyball

Game one of the weekend was a perfect example of what the Bisons could strive to become, as the

Spartans walked to a 3-0 win Friday.

The opening set was a dominant affair by the Spartans, who did not hold back in a 25-15 win. Manitoba hung in early, trading points with Trinity Western, but the Spartans built a major lead by stringing together a few runs.

The herd came back to give the Spartans trouble in the second set,

stringing together a few runs of its own in a 25-21 second-set loss. The Spartans then brought the finishing blow in the third set with a lopsided 25-17 win to take the match.
