Climate crisis necessitates public shaming of air travel

Radical societal changes begin with the disavowing of frivolous flights EVAN TREMBLAY, STAFF

igned by 11,000 scientists and published in the journal BioScience this month, an open letter warns of “untold suffering” if radical changes are not made to society to counteract climate change.

Many of the changes necessary to counter the existential threat of biosphere collapse and potential human extinction brought about by climate change must occur at a societal level. Radical changes in government policy are necessary to begin healing our profoundly sick socioeconomic system.

Though many actions individuals take to live sustainably may be largely symbolic — cancelled out in their positive effect by corporate rapaciousness — certain actions are so inherently wasteful and destructive that refraining from them is a moral imperative.

The abandonment of air travel for pleasure is perhaps chief among these actions. Few actions do so much damage for so negligible a benefit. Few actions so perfectly encapsulate wan-

ton ecological vandalization — with global repercussions — for private pleasure.

Air travel and associated industries generate two per cent of all global carbon emissions. A single long-haul flight — from Winnipeg to any of the eminently Instagram-able cities of Western Europe for instance — pumps more carbon into the atmosphere than the average human in one of the many poor countries produces in a year.

If undertaken for certain purposes — religious pilgrimage, rare visits to distant kin, research and diplomacy — and properly offset, air travel can contribute to the health and stability of our global civilization. The shrinking of distance has bound our species more tightly together through knowledge of our shared humanity, an achievement to be jealously guarded.

Your personal experience of a foreign place is not contributing to this.

We can have no effect on them, and it is easy to maintain anger at an unknown abstraction. But we all have people in our lives — friends, family, colleagues — who like to fly to warm places in the winter.

We should work to impress on them the true costs of these actions, and to live our lives in a way that does not normalize such reckless and wasteful behavior.

We should ourselves restrict air travel to truly necessary cases.

Sustainable lifestyles must be normalized.

To not call out wasteful luxury for what it is, and make it anathema in polite society, is to doom not only the biosphere, but our own sense of moral clarity.

Yet the death penalty was correctly abolished despite its unwavering popularity. In the exact same way, Canada’s prison system must be reformed.

What this entails is an entire overhaul on how we view criminal justice in the country.

Rather than simply punishing someone for something they’ve done wrong with barbaric practices no better than the original crime, we must send a message that they cannot participate in our civilized society until they have served time away from it and are fit to be rehabilitated.

But until Canada puts rehabilitative policy ahead of punitive policy, prisoners will be far more likely to reoffend.

Advocating for the rights of prisoners is not going to be a popular position, but that is all the more reason to fight for the correct side and change minds on this issue.

Canada must finally put facts over feelings and reform its dysfunctional criminal justice system.

That’s a significant amount of emissions saved when dealing with 5,000 round trips that would otherwise be taken by car.

But the revenue generated from the non-users pays for a majority of the corresponding subsidy. In this way it behaves quite similarly to the carbon tax.

It’s apparent that the U-Pass is as much a case of students giving the city a major benefit through their consent to this tax as it is the city doing students a favour with a subsidy.

The reason for the increase is clear. With a mandate to extend the U-Pass to Red River College that will increase costs, coupled with a reduction in provincial funding, the city is forced to either expand the subsidy it’s willing to give to the program by sacrificing spending elsewhere, or increase the cost per student.

While UMSU strongly opposes the increase in fees, it also presented the city with a third option: extend the winter U-Pass from four to eight months, increasing the fee to raise additional revenue, but giving students access to affordable transit year-round.

This is the only way to raise the additional revenue necessary to cover the Red River College expansion, while not forcing students to vote for a cost increase with no additional benefits.

Some of the additional revenue generated would be offset by students no longer purchasing the more expensive post-secondary pass, but because buses rarely run at capacity in the summer, the increase in demand would not necessitate the increased service costs that have been incurred for the fall and winter pass, making it a more affordable option.

The U-Pass program has been an unambiguous success for the city of Winnipeg and for many U of M students.

But increased costs with no additional benefits could put the program at risk of discontinuation.

If that were to happen, the city might save some money, but it would render its $500 million rapid transit investment under-utilized while simultaneously putting 5,000 cars back on the road — producing a much higher emissions-based “social cost.”

If the city wishes to show its sincere commitment to sustainability, it ought to reconsider its budget to avoid or reduce a U-Pass fee increase, or at least extend the benefits of the program into the summer months.

A few weeks after the incident, a team of experts — including those from the U.S. Air Force, working in co-operation with the Royal Canadian Air Force and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police — investigated the encounter site: a burned-out circle with a diameter of 30 feet. The trees surrounding the area had dead branches that looked as though they had been touched with intense heat.

The radiation levels at the site appeared alarmingly high and the Canadian health department considered quarantining the area. Later, the team discovered the radiation levels were caused by a vein of radium that ran under the entire region.

Michalak said that for years after the incident, the burn marks on his chest flared up every few months.

However, Michalak never said he had encountered aliens that fateful May afternoon and remained certain he had simply encountered advanced military aircraft.

At the archives event, Michalak’s son Stan emphasized that, throughout throughout his life, his father’s reaction to the two flying objects remained, “What the hell is that?”

erforming a biblical oratorio written in 1741 seems like a big undertaking for even the most seasoned vocalist, but for an unrehearsed group of casual-drinking choristers,

it’s a chance to come together in the spirit of music.

On Nov. 15 and 16, the Winnipeg Beer Choir is gathering at Young United Church to tackle George

Minn., in 2015. They became the coorganizers of the Winnipeg chapter of the predominantly U.S. Beer Choir group.

Campbell describes the event as an important chance to gather likeminded people and build community.

“We have people that have met at Beer Choir, and they’re now Beer Choir friends,” he said.

“And we know that singing is really good for people’s mental health — just coming together and being in a group.”

While the beer is a major draw — and a basic part of the event — drinking is in no way mandatory.

Beer Choir welcomes singers of any age.

Campbell said 2018’s holiday singalong was big and they expect to top it with this year’s event. “[For last year’s Messiah event] we had a choir of 200 that just came together and crashed their way through this music,” he said.

The Winnipeg Beer Choir has been gathering for several years, drinking beer and singing contemporary pop and traditional choral songs — unapologetically unrehearsed.

“I would describe it as an opportunity to get together and sing songs that you may or may not know, with a group of people who love doing the same thing,” Campbell said.

Finding motivation

Small’s anarchic inspirations have a specific and almost unconscious methodology. Even individual pieces are layered with themes, motifs and iconography.

In a battle for second last in the conference, the herd hosted the University of Regina Cougars for a two-game set. Manitoba failed to score in either contest and was swept at home.

With the loss, Manitoba — loser of five straight — now sits last in the conference with seven points through 10 games. Regina moves into seventh with its wins.

The U of M Bisons men’s hockey team and women’s volleyball team crossed the provincial border to face the University of Regina Cougars and came back with some wins in the standings.

Men’s hockey

Bisons men’s hockey fans are likely used to this story by now, but the herd earned a split in another weekend series to stay .500 on the year.

Not satisfied with a regulation win on Friday, the herd made the first game of the weekend a nail-biter, allowing a last-second goal then winning in overtime.

Fifth-year defender Sean Christensen broke open the scoring in the second period, picking up his first of the season less than three minutes into the frame to make it 1-0 Manitoba.

James Hilsendager evened the score two minutes later for Regina, but Dylan Thiessen scored to snatch the lead back for Manitoba at 2-1.

Jonah Wasylak gave Manitoba a two-goal cushion in the third, and Ben Duperreault brought the Cougars within one and it looked like Manitoba would take the game in regulation.

Riley Lamb made a pair of stellar saves in the dying seconds to preserve the 3-2 lead, but Regina veteran Tristan Frei had other ideas.

He picked up his third goal of the season with a second left on the clock to send the game to overtime, where Keaton Jameson spoiled the fun with a goal to give Manitoba the 4-3 win.

Regina came back with energy in game two of the weekend, withstanding a Bisons comeback to win 3-2 in a shootout.

The Bisons women’s volleyball team began to put a tough start to the season behind it, picking up its first two wins of the campaign in a sweep of the Cougars.

Friday’s match was a statement for Manitoba, winning sets by large margins, juxtaposed with scrappy wins in a 3-1 victory.

The herd started the match strong, taking the opening set 25-14 before Regina came back to eke out a 25-23 second set win to tie the match 1-1.

Game two of the weekend was much the same, as Manitoba picked up another 3-1 win in similar fashion to complete the weekend sweep.

As with Friday, Manitoba opened Saturday’s affair with a strong opening set win — this time 25-19 — before the Cougars came roaring back with a 25-23 second set win to tie it.

The Bisons took the next two sets 25-19 and 25-20 respectively to take the match and the weekend.
